Hello everybody,

Lots of great artist have already entered this challenge - wow! I'll have to get going and scan the concepts I made so far. Best of luck to everybody!

03-31-2005, 05:48 PM (

Here are those concepts. :)

The idea behind the whole scene is to have the master in this case "The Keeper" seated in his throne. Behind him is a central nervous system of sorts which he is plugged into. His servant "The Subjected" is kept as a servant and care giver while his master controls "The Core", a great machine that controls the surrounding city. Here is the basic layout of the scene.

03-31-2005, 05:52 PM (

Here is one possible pose for "The Subjected". It is based on the classical pose of the Dying Gaul, in the upper right-hand corner.

03-31-2005, 05:58 PM (

And here is the other, the loyal servant is not so loyal. :) As I said they are both possible, and I haven't settled on one yet.

03-31-2005, 06:01 PM (

Here is the concept on "The Keeper". I have actually begun modeling his armor and hope to have an update later this evening.

03-31-2005, 06:05 PM
The Keeper works for me. Nice thought through sketchs. Look forward to seeing more.

03-31-2005, 06:10 PM
Hey Brent, thanks a lot! He was actually the first concept I put down on paper. :D

03-31-2005, 07:14 PM
i like your sketches :)

the keeper is awesome :)
i keep my eye on you

03-31-2005, 08:30 PM (

here I am again. Hey, thanks alot for your comments! Here is the Keeper's armor. Mostly everything else will be done in Z2, so this will get a round of detailing then too.

03-31-2005, 08:39 PM
Hi there Matt, this is off to a great start! keep it up:thumbsup:

03-31-2005, 09:20 PM
Hey DaddyMack, thank you very much!

04-01-2005, 08:00 PM (

Here is an early shot of the Keeper's head from the initial ZSpheres to his preview state as Adaptive Skin. :D

04-02-2005, 07:46 PM (

Greetings everybody,

Here is a quick render showing the progress on the Keeper's head. More following soon. ;)

04-02-2005, 08:11 PM
looks great so far, face expression is awesome :)

04-03-2005, 06:57 PM (

Hello there,

007cat, thanks so much again for your comments. :D

Here is a concept of the servant; I also decided to go with the crouched pose for him in the final scene, I feel that it brings more to the image.

04-03-2005, 07:09 PM (

I have started modeling on the Keeper's throne. As with most of my non-organic shapes I box-modeled the base mesh, which I then will import into ZBrush.

04-03-2005, 08:36 PM
Hey mmbenya, good throne (and I model one, for guardian ;))

Great modeling, keep up good work.

Good luck

04-03-2005, 08:38 PM
Hey there Abishai_, many thanks for your kind comments. :D

04-04-2005, 02:03 AM
great models .. good detail im sure you'll add a really good look to your scene when you Z brush it all..great stuff the head model looks fantastic!

04-04-2005, 04:45 PM
This looks like it will be a fun piece to work on! I like the concept you are going for alot. I am definitely looking forward to seeing where this goes. The head mesh is nicely accomplished. The only thing that I would work out is how the ear transitions into the head, it seems to "bleed" a bit too much into the face, if I can describe it right. You might want the ear to come in a bit more along the top and the back of the ear, to give it more shape and definition. Thats about all I can see as needing a tweak, otherwise I am diggin' it somethin' fierce mate. Keep going!

04-04-2005, 04:57 PM
Hello there Neeno and Beaner, thank you both very much for your kind comments! Yeah, I definitely agree on what you said about the ear, I'll be working on it for one of the coming updates. Thanks alot again. :)

04-04-2005, 04:59 PM
beautiful concepts and the character reminds me of my favourite thundercats wooow:scream:
keep those updates comin

04-04-2005, 06:06 PM
Hey, glad to hear that, thanks alot for your generous comments. Ευχαριστώ :D

04-04-2005, 08:42 PM
Hi ther, mmbenya!
Interesting to notice: your modelling has recognisable syle! I like that!
Fascinating Keeper's design - cool retro-looking armor and especially galsses (round!!).
Actually reminds me a bit frankestien style or something like that... Cool.
Wait for servant modelling!!

04-06-2005, 08:06 PM (

Hey wow Deryk, I am really happy to hear that, thanks a lot for your kind words!

Well I started in on the Subjected model. I will be doing the whole thing out of ZSpheres. I contemplated going the modeling and rigging route but decided against it. Here is the posed ZSphere tool.

04-06-2005, 09:03 PM
Very nice!! The sketches are great!! I love the servant!!
and great pose with the z-spheres, I aways have seriou problems to put them, haha!!
Keep it up Matt!!

04-06-2005, 09:30 PM
Hi matt.................Looking real nice.....All zpheres I see......I am going to create my servants with all zpheres.....My master will be with max to brush.....I think you have a real nice pose set up.....and body shape.....keep the fine work coming......I'll be looking in for more.....:arteest:

04-07-2005, 02:37 AM
Very nice, and very interesting technique of modeling.

04-07-2005, 09:12 AM
This zpheres looks good, I hope you gonna model this very very good

Keep up good work ;)

04-07-2005, 05:21 PM
Hi mmbenya!
very dynamic pose you've set up:buttrock:!!!
Especially from front view - fascinating. If he will be looking with anger "from down" it would be just cool, man!
Great stuff is that z-brush - impreseed with ease of z-spheres...Getting gelous:)

04-07-2005, 07:27 PM
Very cool work on the master & throne. Nice Zsphere skele.. Nice pose. Good job so far. Keep em coming...

04-07-2005, 08:24 PM
Great work all round so far mmbenya, keep it coming:thumbsup:

04-07-2005, 09:04 PM
I like your zspheres !

god luck ;)

04-08-2005, 08:46 PM
mecman: Thanks a lot! The problem with posing it before you sculpt is it takes much longer to do. Symmetry is nice. :D

Virtuoso, arlutik, ||) |V| |^|, DaddyMack, pitiwazou: Thank you all very much! :D

Abishai_: Hopefully it won't disappoint. :) Thank you, I hopefully will have an update by tomorrow.

Deryk: Hey again, thanks so much! Maybe you would want to give the demo a try if you haven't already. :)

04-09-2005, 08:12 PM (

Here is a shot of the early sculpting progress on the Subjected. He is still in the ealry stage and I need to fix up some seams as well as refine the detail. :D

04-09-2005, 08:15 PM (

Another view of the Subjected. As with the other image it was rendered in ZBrush with no special set-up. ;)

04-09-2005, 10:35 PM
Lots going on here matt......And looking nice.Interesting concept, and a nice plan........Those poses are going to be just right.and the modeling is off to a nice start too.......Keep it up,and I'll be watching you as you move along......

04-10-2005, 12:37 AM
WOW Matt , great work I love the position to, it's awesome.

04-10-2005, 01:50 PM
Ok nice concept so far. The model looks really nice but the biceps is to big and his shoulder is a little to small. But maybe is it you're purpose. greets

04-10-2005, 02:48 PM
awesome work so far, as everyone has already said, its a brilliant pose. one thing id like to suggest is aligning the fingers and feet all on the same plane to give it a better sense of weight and balance. thats all though, im really looking forward to seeing how it progresses. good luck:thumbsup:

04-11-2005, 12:48 AM
Very well sculpted...or brushed.. :) Nice job... this is working very well. Keep it up Matt!

04-11-2005, 03:08 PM
Impressive Poses

04-11-2005, 03:09 PM
I mean hands and posture. But I'd prefer furry.

04-12-2005, 11:31 PM
Wow, mmbenya,
Like that precise anatomical stucture! Good work

04-13-2005, 06:40 PM
Yes, very precise. But do somfin with the pose. First few seconds i were thinking he is smelling somfin... well let's say on the ground. Outstanding modelling:applause:. Congrats. My thread (

04-16-2005, 07:30 PM
Virtuoso: Hey there again, thank you very much for your encouragement!

arlutik: Hey thanks a lot man for all of your kind replies!

crapple: Thanks a lot for the observation, I toned down the bicep and upped the shoulders a little.

conundrum: Yeah, once you said that I really started to notice it. Actually the worst was from behind, since that is the direction you'll be seeing him from that might just be a problem. ;) I think I will just go and rig his feet and hand to fix the problem. Thanks again!

||) |V| |^|: Thanks again, glad you like it!

kuzgunoglu: Hey thank you very much! I will try to make him somewhat furry. ;)

Deryk: Hey man thank you again! You've encouraged me to get a lot more done this weekend. :D

suk-grigorij: Well he is an animal man. ;) I am actually pretty happy with the pose but I will work on it a bit more when it is rigged. Thank you very much for your comments!

Thanks again for all of your comments. :D

04-16-2005, 08:01 PM (

Greetings everyone,

Well I haven't been around for a couple of days since I had to finish some other work first. But I did mange to get some modeling done I haven't had a chance to get posted yet. Here is the "final" sculpting done on the Subjected. As mentioned already the weight does not look like it is spread through the arm and feet. I think I will just go ahead and rig those parts to clear up that problem and give a better sense of weight. Since he is only meant for a certain perspective I didn't give the front of his body as much attention. Next I plan on dropping him in PM and start texturing him. He will have shorter hair and this will be fine since I'll do the touch up work in PS. I also plan on posting some shots of the composition with all of the elements in place soon.

04-16-2005, 08:05 PM (

A view of the head, since you won't be seeing it that closely in the final image. ;)

04-16-2005, 09:27 PM
Looking real nice from modeling to pose....the pose is very pliable and well balanced....real dynamic.......the muscle definition in modeling too is quite apparent......real nice matt.....keep charging ahead like this......:arteest:

04-17-2005, 02:31 PM
Hey Mat its a lot better now. The anatomie of the arm is good. Nice face also. You gonna add some fur on it or you gonna texture it? I maybe say it before but I really like that concept of the cats.

Greets Wim

04-17-2005, 07:07 PM
Great modeling, The body pose looks powerful.
Good luck!!

04-17-2005, 07:21 PM
Virtuoso, Wim and Maxter, thank you all very much for your generous comments! I'll most likely texture the fur on with some heavy touch-up in PS, generally I've been happy with the results in the past. :)

04-17-2005, 07:24 PM
Nice to see some more animal oriented works . Last modeling session looks real good. Like the muscle definitions.

04-17-2005, 07:48 PM (

3dRaven, thanks alot!

I modeled this a bit ago...

04-17-2005, 07:51 PM (

...and I textured it this evening. :)

04-17-2005, 09:10 PM
Nice evening of texture work.......well done's all coming along real well......See you as you come up with more.....:arteest:

04-19-2005, 12:25 PM
Really nice and big cat. ;) Will there be a fur at the end?

04-19-2005, 12:46 PM
Virtuoso: Hey as always thanks a lot! :) I actually got quite a bit done yesterday and today so I hope to have some updates this afternoon.

InTerceptoV: Thank you very much! I think I will texture the fur on and then go over it in PS to give it more life.

Thanks again! :D

04-19-2005, 01:00 PM
The blades markings look spot on  The gold/brass could use some more shader work..lookin forward to seeing this come together as a whole scene :)

04-19-2005, 01:33 PM
Hey thank you very much! :D Yeah I think you are right about the brass, I will go back over and work it out more.

04-19-2005, 01:47 PM (

Well I decided to go with a greener design for the background rather than the mountainous rocky look I had in the earlier concept. With that being said I also wanted to add some little monkey like creatures to the background. Here is the before and after of the little guy that will make up the monkey family. :D

04-19-2005, 01:56 PM (

Since I modeled the little fellow (who I have named Jean-Luc, don't ask why) out of ZBrush, base mesh at least, I went ahead and rigged him. Here is an excerpt of the posing fun. ;)

04-19-2005, 05:27 PM
Give hin an enterprise badge :)

Have you thought about shaving the fur near his mouth?? It seem to disapear when he's not chatting.

04-19-2005, 08:39 PM
lol, yeah that would be fitting. :D None of the texture work or material set-up is anything but a test run in 2.5D. Once I had it in Z2 I just went ahead and dropped it to the canvas and tested some color schemes for his fur and eyes. Thanks again 3dRaven!

04-19-2005, 09:01 PM
Hey Matt, it's all coming together over here man...dig the humour too;) That last critter shows us all a bit better where you're going with the scene a bit more:thumbsup: I gotta get me a seat of Zbrush...
Keep it coming Matt, it's looking great

04-20-2005, 11:17 AM (

I started on the texture for the Subjected this morning in ZBrush, the feet, hands, and other detail hasn't been worked on yet.

04-20-2005, 11:20 AM (

For the texturing process on the fur I am using the fiber brush and layering it on with different intensities.

04-20-2005, 11:26 AM (

While texturing I usually work from light to dark areas, when the hair is finished I then go over and intensify different areas of hair. The size of the fiber brush determines the length of the hair, varying this as well as the grooming, gravity and density can give a natural effect to the volume of fur.

04-20-2005, 11:32 AM (

Here is a very quick and dirty concept I made of the revised scene composition. :)
I want to merge the different elements such as the vines and cables, trees and machinery to better frame the scene.

04-20-2005, 11:36 AM
Hey DaddyMack, thanks a lot, I was hoping that I wasn't the only one that got a kick out of the little guy. :) Yeah, I haven't regretted my purchase of ZBrush. :D Thanks again!

04-20-2005, 01:03 PM
Great update. You did a wonderfull job with the skin/fur texturing. Like the compo too, tight fit but everythings in it's place

04-20-2005, 04:25 PM
Hey man thanks a lot, your comments are always very encouraging! :D I am glad to hear that you like the new composition! I was thinking this afternoon about putting the "robot hairdryer" (actually the thing that is going to hold his brain plugs) over his head on a track, hopefully this doesn't make the scene feel cramped.

04-20-2005, 06:07 PM (

Here is a render of some of the objects making up the Keeper's residence, I'll be adding alot more detail objects to spruce up the place.

04-20-2005, 07:50 PM
Hey, since my last visit so much updates appeared! Ok, interesting progress with texturing.
Greener is just wonderful - blue-gray-black fit cool. If servant will be done in such a manner at the end it would great!
Good luck to you!

04-20-2005, 09:06 PM
Nice models Mat  Smooth mesh and lots of little details like the enforced flaps/doors on the box.

04-20-2005, 09:09 PM
Lookin good! I like

-Keep it up.

04-21-2005, 01:18 PM
Deryk:Hey man, thaks alot! Yeah, I think I will stay with this kind of color scheme. Good luck to you too!

3dRaven: Thank you so much!

cjewell_01: Hey, thanks for dropping by and for your encouragement!

04-22-2005, 08:22 PM
Wow this is one intresting concept with a whole collection of outstanding modeling.
Everything is looking great and really coming together.

I am tagging along since I would really like to see where it gets to.

Good luck with it all!

04-22-2005, 10:47 PM
Hi again Matt, looks like you're going to end up with a really good balance of hard edge and organic forms in this...I really dig the composition so far too:thumbsup:

Tiger creatures texture looks mental, Keep it coming...

04-24-2005, 07:43 PM
Cool I will hold till I see some textures looks good so far.

04-25-2005, 11:31 PM
I am waiting for the better textures. Even in this very early textures, the tiger man texture seems good.

Environment is also boosting sci-fi atmosphere.

04-25-2005, 11:34 PM
Nice road's coming.....fine tune time now,,,,but where you are does show some nice promise.....just keep chipping away at it all.....right along with the rest of us......bit by bit......Doing one nice overall job here....I'll be watching as you move forward......See you then:arteest:

04-27-2005, 09:22 PM (

Well it has been a while since I have last updated but I have tried to keep busy on the WIP while I took care of other things. Here is a shot of the Subjected's armor/costume.

04-27-2005, 09:27 PM (

I have been putting the pieces together and have started to test the lighting. Also the Subjected has been rigged to enhance his pose and I have also corrected the problem with the Keeper's ears. :D

04-27-2005, 09:29 PM
Looking good. Great detail in the modeling!

04-27-2005, 09:39 PM
BlackDidThis: Hey thank you very much for your very generous comments! I hope that I won't disappoint. :D

DaddyMack: Hey there again, thanks a lot! Yeah, hopefully the merging of the industrial and organic will work out in the end. I am glad you like the tiger's texture, I will get around to posting a finished version of the texture soon. :D

||) |V| |^|: Thank you very much! Well no textures this time, I wanted to get the lighting right before I start rendering with the textures. ;)

kuzgunoglu: Well they are coming, just not in this update. Thanks a lot for your comments!

Virtuoso: Hey there again, I was wondering what had happened to you. Not on my thread but on yours. Thanks a lot for your always generous comments! :D

Wave666: Hey man thanks a lot!

Thanks again,

04-27-2005, 09:48 PM
Really great work with lightning and modeling.... KEEP IT UP!

04-28-2005, 01:42 PM
Hey Maxko, thank you very much! :D Actually I am pretty happy with the way the lighting turned out too, a little more tweaking and I think that area will be covered.

04-28-2005, 02:07 PM
UUU update. The servents clothes look cool they really suit the character. Nice details in the background too

04-28-2005, 02:10 PM
Hey man thanks I am glad to hear that! I plan on spicing it up a bit with normal maps from ZBrush. :D

04-28-2005, 02:44 PM
Wow Matt, this has all the makings of a classic Image...Great work adding all those details:thumbsup: Keep it up!

04-28-2005, 09:17 PM
Your composition with a lovely blue. Well, there is something in the scene I cant tell what it is or why but I felt myself there watching the happening with my own eyes; as if.
Thats very successful.

04-28-2005, 09:31 PM
Hi Matt.............. real nice're doing some real fine work on all fronts.....nice to see advance and in a real positive manner.....the scene has some nice drama and allows the eye to take in quite a bit.....It's a real nice job here matt.....just here to say keep it strong and steady as you are all the way to the finish......Best tou you....I'll be looking in as you go on.....:arteest: :arteest:

04-28-2005, 09:51 PM
what a cool scene! i really like what you did here.

04-28-2005, 10:05 PM
hello MMbenya

good idea, I must say that your composition very is guessed right. The
personages also, I hope that all the set is as well as the idea.

04-29-2005, 10:55 PM
that techno architecture looks so great! Very well done job!
Actually masrter appears to be not very kind - I'd kill him too :)

04-30-2005, 07:53 AM

Definately original in your creation and definately successfull in your presenting it all. A fantastic collection of work. And it seems like a LOT of it.

Something doesn't seem right about the servents tunic skirt/armour though... would you concider putting something like a cloth skirt under it? Or a sort of loin cloth loosly complimenting it?

There are so many elements all over.. I really don't know where else to look!. How on earth are you going to texture this whole thing?!!!

Going fantastic!

05-01-2005, 05:13 PM
DaddyMack: Thank you very much! Wow, that is putting the pressure on! :D

kuzgunoglu: Hey man, I am very happy to hear that you think so, thanks a lot! :D

Virtuoso: Hey there again, thanks for the encouragement man! I hope to get another update out tonight, or tomorrow depending on what time allows for. Thanks again. :D

Mordalles: Thanks a lot, I am glad to hear that! :D

pierre_bixquert: Hey man thank you very much! :D

Actually masrter appears to be not very kind - I'd kill him too
LOL Deryk, that's cool! Thanks man! :D

BlackDidThis: Hey there man that is a really good idea. I ended up modeling the loin cloth then last evening when I read your comment. I agree that it felt like something was miss. There is no point in having a waist armor if you can see all of his tidbits. I still need to touch up a few parts but for the most part I am happy with the way it turned out. I will hopefully have something to post later this evening. I have started in on the texture and shader work. Since I feel that will either make or break the image I will post something when I am happy with the way it is coming along. :D Thanks again man for your generous comments!

Thanks again everybody!

05-01-2005, 06:39 PM
Guess the masters having a bad day.... not only does his servent want to kill him but most CGTalkers ;) Can't wait for another update :)

05-01-2005, 06:47 PM
Great model, the texturing is amazing, it's looking close to realistic. The lighting is rerally giving it depth.....keep going.

05-02-2005, 08:40 AM
Solid modelling, great job. I love the mechanical stuff you did, and i think the lighting is well done as well. I haven't seen this thread in a while, so i'm not sure if you did this on purpose, but i think the servant's tail looks a little fat. Just ignore me if you did it on purpose :)

05-02-2005, 08:05 PM
3dRaven: Lol, yeah he is an evil one. :D Thanks alot, hopefully I won't disappoint!

ALISK: Hey thank you very much for the encouragement, and kind words! :D

hhssuu: Yeah when I was modeling him I tried a thinner tail at first but it looked somehow off, it might have been the ortho view of ZBrush, but it looked sort of ratty. lol Thanks again for stopping by! :D

Update following shortly. ;)

05-02-2005, 08:10 PM (

Well I began working on texturing the rest of the Subjected. Also the texture map for the Subjected has been further updated. Another addition is the loin cloth under the armor as suggested by Black. :D

05-02-2005, 08:44 PM
Great update Matt !! The lighting's excellent. I'd make the cloth flow down on the tail though.

Nice choice of colors too

05-02-2005, 08:47 PM
You moved right along now matt......Good work and the overall work from models,to pose to now textures look to be on a nice road......Keep hammering away at it......You're doing a real fine job.....:arteest:

05-02-2005, 09:15 PM
wwooww, realy great work, try to make a displacement or a furr in the tiger for improve the realism..great work
Good luck

05-02-2005, 09:49 PM
Lol, thanks for the mention
You would have thought of it anyways .. I was just earlier

Honestly, this wasn't the type of cloth that I had expected you to model out.. but it has definately done the job. Looks really good.

I know that things are still being worked on... but I have to ask if you are going to modify the cloth texture later on.
Your whole post looks custome textured and worked on... But the green demands us to look at it and all that is vivid there is the enlarged cloth texture.

Nagging again

Ok stopped now :)
Yours is definately a worthy entry Matt... everything is resolving just perfectly! We all would love to be able to see it compeleted!

05-02-2005, 10:34 PM
your environment is really great. totally well done models

05-03-2005, 06:12 PM
Oh, find that blue "inner" light more than welcome in light model! It just adds some sort of mystery, as for me it also underlines some hidden plans in his head! Also very good looking much saturated colors - so fresh indeed! I'd also add evident specular highlights on knife as now it visualy disappears among other clothing...
Good progress!

05-03-2005, 06:16 PM
Woooow good texture man!

3dRaven: Hey Gregory, thanks so much for your comments! When I modeled the cloth I tried to add a little bit of movement to it, since I did want it to just hang down. I am pretty happy with the way it looks but I am not sure now how that translates now. ;) With the lighting I took and made a dome of spotlights with low intensity and used AO since true GI was taking me too long for test renders. I have a key light to back light the characters, and others to enhance certain features, like an area light for the glow on the Subjected. Also there are a few spotlights casting some volumetric light in the background through the mechanical objects. :D

Virtuoso: Hey there Michael thanks so much for your encouraging words! I gotta get busy. :D

matheus_bristol: Thanks alot for your reply! I'm not sure about a displacement map, but I plan on working it out in PS to give the fur more boost. :D

BlackDidThis: Lol, thanks a lot Black! :D Actually last night I began working on another idea I had for the cloth. I agree the textile was too large so I shrank that down quite a bit. Also I added an alpha channel to my texture and now it is a little more interesting to look at. The green is now not so over whelming, but I still like the idea of having green as a more forest like color compared to the techno color of his immediate surroundings. Thanks a lot for your input, I really appreciate it. :D

leho: Hey there, thank you very much for your kind reply! :D

Deryk: Thanks a lot for your all of your kind comments Deryk! :D Yeah I want to do something with the dagger since you really cannot see any of the detail I put into the texture. I actually did a specular map for the engraving and blade edge.

mmaxx: Hey thank you very much I'm very happy that you like it! :D

Thanks again everybody for your feedback and kind comments!

Hey Matt when's the next update??...tic...toc..

05-07-2005, 09:08 PM
Hey Gregory! Thanks man for stopping by and your continued support! :buttrock:Short answer: tomorrow ... probably. ;) Long answer: I was actually going to render something that I could still post tonight but since it looks like the render will still take quite a while I won't have anything before tomorrow. I've set up materials as well as done alot of texture work, and I added some things to the vegetation. I still have to set up things for another 106 objects. I plan on coming by and checking everybody's threads out tomorrow because I've got to hit the hay soon. :bounce:

05-08-2005, 01:36 PM (

Long-time no update. ;) Well I did get to do a test render this morning. Basically I am testing my textures and materials, as you can see I do not have everything in the scene and quite a few of the materials either need tweaks or are simply place holders. I still need to work on the Subjected's dagger but as for the rest of his armor I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. Also sorry for the bad JPEG compression I had to take it below 50% in PS to get it under the file size limit. :D

05-08-2005, 03:54 PM
Nice update Matt. The hill seems to melt into the slave character...very similar'd be nice if you could bring out the character more after some texture tweaks.

I like the materials used in the room & the little leaves near the entrance :)

05-08-2005, 03:58 PM
Hey there Gregory, yeah I had another texture on it, and in the render I uploaded today it only has a place holder. I will retexture it and keep your advice in mind, thanks a lot for the input! :D

05-08-2005, 05:11 PM
Hi there, looking really good. My only comment is that I wasn't sure what was the character holding until I saw your sketch. I don't think it is reading very well mainly because the knife is cut off by the canvas border. I realize it is pretty late to make big changes like that but I feel that it is a very important piece of your image that should be easily readable.

check this out and see how PGA is tackling the same situation; no question about what the character is holding.

05-08-2005, 07:27 PM
Fine composition Matt... looks great:thumbsup:

05-08-2005, 09:17 PM
Wow! I kinda don't know what to say...It looks stunning Matt!!

05-09-2005, 10:46 AM (

Well I was pretty busy since the last update. First I have re-textured the log in the background and modeled some fungus for it. I worked a bit on the dagger as well as added a few spotlights to add highlights here and there. :D

05-09-2005, 10:55 AM
SNoWs: Hello there, thank you very much for your kind comments! Yeah I see what you mean, but I am actually pretty happy with the way that it is positioned. I just want to highlight it more with some extra light. :D

Maxter: Hey thank you very much! I am glad that you like it. :D

DaddyMack: Hey Robert, thanks a lot man, you're always an encouraging voice! :D Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you all very much again!

05-09-2005, 11:28 AM
The greens looking lush and alive Matt. I'd mix in another texture to the log and mess with it's texture a bit...maybe add some moss?

Great update on the details

05-09-2005, 11:33 AM
Hey Gregory, thanks a lot! :D I ended up painting the texture in ZBrush, and I was thinking about adding moss then, but didn't. I figured I could either do it in PS, or as you say by mixing another texture to it, I am not sure which method I will go with though. :shrug:Thanks again man!

05-10-2005, 04:53 PM
Hi mmbenya! I'm finaly here, he he :)
Unfortunately on my pc you images do not appear full - just top part... So i can't say much about characters, but environment looks really well done and so complex! Especialy architecture!
Good luck with it!

05-10-2005, 11:52 PM
Nice again're doing one fine job here in all aspects.....i wish you the best in these last touches, and look forward to seeing this finished as you have planned.....All the best to you,and I''ll see you as you move along.......:arteest:

05-14-2005, 06:20 AM
Honestly I personally wouldn't dare to go for such a dominant neon blue over all.. especially in the lightings...

But especially with your last post on the close up of the throne I have to say that you not only got away with it, but that you have definately made a good choice. It is looking fantastic!

Little to say but: Bring em in!

05-14-2005, 04:13 PM
Hey Matt how's it going? Can't wait for your next update...bring it on :D

05-14-2005, 08:56 PM
Matt, good luck on finishing this, you put so much work already. It's really looking great, can't wait to see the final.

05-17-2005, 08:09 PM (

Here is the matte painting used in the background. I used several reference images of clouds I had; the painting was done in PS.

05-17-2005, 08:18 PM (

I had a little trouble getting everything rendered. At one point I had intended to render the final image through a renderfarm but that didn't work out in the end. So I had to go another route and rendered it in layers.

05-17-2005, 08:21 PM (

05-17-2005, 08:24 PM (

05-17-2005, 08:26 PM (

05-17-2005, 08:28 PM (

... And finally I rendered out a shadow layer with AO.

05-17-2005, 08:34 PM (

Finally here is a detail of the treehopper added into the scene. I have yet to give him that Enterprise badge. :P

05-17-2005, 08:36 PM
Hi, Matt Benya, I didn't read all your thread, and i don't know if you already know that, but something had and idea really close to yours. It won't be the same final compositing but it's a bit amazing.

However, you did a nice work. I like the modeling. I hope you'll have time to finish it.
Good luck.

05-17-2005, 08:37 PM (

I painted the eyes in ZBrush. If anyone is interested here is a ZScript:

05-17-2005, 08:39 PM
Matt was a bit worried with your silence on this thread...good to see you were preparing an update pack :) Looking nice hope to see it merged soon.

I have yet to give him that Enterprise badge. :P

Forget the badge...he'd have to be bald :D

05-17-2005, 08:45 PM (

And here it is all put together. I went over everything and painted things in here and there; the fur was added and I worked on the servant's mouth and eyes. Additionally the lighting, color and levels were enhanced. I might wait until tomorrow to upload the final image just in case I want to change something in the last minute.

Matt :)

05-17-2005, 09:03 PM
Rock ON Matt!! Looking great my friend:thumbsup:

It looks like a cover of a comic... Sweet execution;)

05-17-2005, 09:21 PM
I was starting to get a bit worried, first I didn't have much time to continue working on my entry and then I had issues with the final renders. But everything works out in the end and I am pretty happy with the way the images took shape.

Deryk: Thank you very much! :D Yeah I have had that happen before too, usually on thumbnails though.

Virtuoso: Hey man always great to hear from you! Thanks for all of your encouragement throughout the competition. :D

BlackDidThis: Hey thank you very much Black! For the lighting I had something like that in mind, it did however turn out a little more extreme however I was happy with the way it looked in the end. :D

3dRaven: Hey man, thanks a lot for your continued encouragement and advice! :D Yeah I was getting a little worried too and a couple of days ago I was afraid that I might not get a chance to finish it. :argh: But after a few very late nights things began to take shape again.

Forget the badge...he'd have to be bald :D

Lol, yeah I think I will leave it off.

arlutik: Hey thanks alot man, hopefully I do not disappoint!

DaVee: Hey thanks a lot for your kind comments! :D Actually I wasn't aware of PGA's entry until SNoWS mentioned it ( a little while ago. Honestly I am a little unhappy since his entry appears to be very close in concept to my own. However I am not too worried since I had already posted all of my concepts and the models of my main characters including the already posed servant before PGA posted any work on his entry.

DaddyMack: Hey Robert thanks a lot!

It looks like a cover of a comic...

Cool, you're saying this to a man that at one point wanted to be a penciler, so that really means a lot, thanks man!

Thank you all again very much! :D

05-17-2005, 09:25 PM
really nice !

Nice composition and colors, nice work

05-17-2005, 09:25 PM
Heh ;) It comes from a man with 18 years of comic collecting under his belt... Well done Matt;)

05-17-2005, 09:38 PM

Excellent looking final Matt I love the contrast of the warm outside and the cold interior. Great atmosphere and a wonderfull lighting setup. I like the last minute changes to the servant. Grat colour scheme. You can really be proud of this entry Matt you've put a lot of work into it and it shows nicely

Best of luck friend :)

05-18-2005, 02:35 PM
Even Better Matt! Congratulations... and thanks for the ride;)

05-18-2005, 04:28 PM
DaddyMack: Hey Robert, thank you so much! Yeah, I'm happy that I didn't mess it up completely with the last changes. Once I saved an image that I was working on from Painter, a little bit more and I would have been finished. I saved it off one more time before making it final and the image got completely corrupted and I had to repaint the whole image from scratch within a couple of days. I must have checked that TIF fifty times before I uploaded it. Hey, you have done an excellent job throughout and I can't wait to see that final image you have promised us! :deal:

3dRaven:  Thanks so much Gregory! I'm at a loss for words (actually I am since I lost my bag of words the other day, I had to borrow a dictionary from my wife. It must have been those late nights leading up to the final.). Seriously though it has been an awesome ride watching you building up your scene, I'm still asking myself how you got all those characters done in time. :applause: You have done amazing work and it shows through in every step of the way! Hey I'll talk to you later.

Virtuoso:  Hey man, it definitely has been a blast participating in the challenge! I'll see you soon, this afternoon most likely when you post your final (hint hint nudge nudge)! Keep up the great work! :buttrock:

makaron: That is cool, I am very glad you find them informative. Thank you very much! :D

smaddl: Hey there smaddl, thanks so much for your kind comments! :D

Ludal: Hello there, thank you very much! I am very happy to hear that you like it. :D

05-18-2005, 08:05 PM

Nice job crossing the finish line. You have a great piece of work... very cool, and best of luck to you.

05-18-2005, 08:39 PM
Wow the finished image turned out to be sooo much richer from the last time i checked. Man this is a really nice piece, great job . Congratualtions ont he final image, and good luck.

05-19-2005, 06:43 AM
Matt sorry I arrive at last... but, congrats for you wonderful image. Impressive sketches and stunning final work: congratulation. Colors and atmosphere is really beautiful in your image :applause:

hhssuu: Hey again, thanks a lot! I am glad that you like the improvements. :D

jddog: Hey no need for apologizes I am just happy that you stopped by and liked what you saw. :D Thank you very much for your kind comments man!

Thanks again everybody for coming by and looking!

05-19-2005, 03:51 PM
Greetings everybody, now that things have calmed down a bit I went and uploaded a bigger version with less compression to my server.

Matt :)

05-20-2005, 09:53 PM
Outstanding - as it was going for :)
Just great texturesd (well, somewhere too blured but iy's not important), lights and the one I like the best - blue and green pattern (real eye-candy ;)
What else - great job!

05-22-2005, 01:23 PM
Hey Volodymyr, thank you so much, your comments are always greatly appreciated! :buttrock: Man, you have done amazing work on your entry. :applause: Hey all the best to you, I'll talk to you later!

05-22-2005, 02:14 PM
hi man.i like your image, has nice colors in overall.i like the BG,and those wines growing arround construction. How did you modeled leaves.Opacity mask or are they modeled.
Anyway,Congrat's on finish and good luck pal.

05-22-2005, 02:19 PM
Hello there, thank you very much! Some parts of the vegetation are modeled (grass, flowers, and other things here and there), while as you guessed I used an opacity mask for most of the leaves on the vines. Thanks again man! :D

05-23-2005, 12:50 PM
Hey Matt,

Great image:thumbsup: , I really like the feel of the outside environment and the blue lighting inside the throne area gives a nice cool water feel to the overall image. Good job and good luck.

05-23-2005, 04:47 PM
I feel SO horrible for missing out on the last stages of your entry. You seem to have made a terriffic presentation of your work all through out!

Your entry was so promising, the modeling was exceptional, the seletcion of elements was unique.. All I can say is that with a total of all that you have presented I wish all the best to find you in this image you have submitted. It looks just great all together!

Best of luck to you Matt!

Edit; I was too rude to not even thank you for the credits...Thank you VERY much, but you know as well as I do that I didn't do anything.. you yourself made everything here possible! .. Great work Matt!

05-23-2005, 08:20 PM
First of all congratulations, seeing final view is so good as a feeling isn't it?
Well well well..., Bright colors and extraordinary render makes this scene easily distinguished amonst others.

Your tiger is beatiful and still I can't understand how the sitting guy not aware of the threat "being stabbed" :)))

Wishing the best Matt. See you in the next challenge i hope.

05-26-2005, 05:21 AM
Hi Matt, congratulations for you, your work is impressive!!! really nice nice render... I like it a lot... best wishes and good luck

05-26-2005, 10:01 AM
This could be a cool idea for a animation, with the servant attacking the keeper.

05-26-2005, 04:09 PM
mmoir: Hello there, thank you very much, hey I'm glad that you like it! You have done great work, best of luck man! :applause:

Black: Hey there man, no harm no foul! ;) Thank you so much! It's great to see that you are doing better again, I hope your wrists are doing better as well after all the stress you put onto them! The ironic part is I must gotten what you had since I'm really feeling bad this week. :argh: My wife tells me I sound like a bear, I tell her I always sound like a bear. :D

kuzgunoglu: Hey, thanks alot man! Yes, it surely is a good feeling to have it finished. And yeah taking part in the challenge was an awesome experience, I definitley am looking forward already to the next one, I'll see you there! All the best to you Levent! :D

Wandddo: Thank you so much! I have seen your entry and you have done an excellent job! Best of luck to you! :applause:

kOmoo: Hey yeah that would be pretty cool, bad thing is I would have to remodel the servant from scratch since he really does not like to move too far out of his original pose. :D

I'm sorry that it took me so long to get back with everybody. I really have been feeling under the weather this week. All the best to you!
