just blocking some shadows....

Hi there everyone! This is my first time entering a contest of any kind, from what I've seen so far, everyone has put a lot of work into their pieces. I am super impressed! Anyways, my piece has somewhat a oriental influence on it, here it is:
An emperor is seated at his throne, he is fear and respected by his people. However the fear is not all for him, it in fact has more to do with the forces behind him, he was simply born into royalty. In the background there are many of his people bowed down, not daring to lift their heads because they are not worthy. Above the throne is a statue of an open mouth dragon and from the jaw is a chain that leads to a shackle around his neck. This symbolizes his predicament, which is that the emperor is confined by the walls of the Forbidden city and enslaved by the watchful eye of the Empress Dowager. To many he may be a body of power but to the empress and her eunichs he is nothing but their marrionnette.

Well I hope you all will enjoy this!

This sounds like an exciting piece. I am definitely interested in seeing a particular culture on display in a fictional piece. I am certain you will bring a lot to the table with this artwork. Good luck.

Wow! Good story. Will the master look like the Yellow Emperor for instance? M-mmm I can already see the picture. Good luck!

Hi Clancy,

I like your concept and I bet you'll throw some beautiful colors into it. However, your composition could use a little work-- the robe is leading off the page, so your eye is led right off the page. This means that anyone looking at it will spend more time looking at the bottom of the page rather than the main focus, which is the emperor being chained by the dragon
(or the other way around; it's rather ambiguous) If I were you, I would make the dragon come in , not from the left hand side but coming up behind the emperor, to introduce more depth to the painting. If you did that and changed the robe so that it curved around and came up again, you could greatly improve the picture. One way to see what's wrong, if there's anything, is to flip the picture. This helps you to see it afresh. All the great artists here do it. Leonardo used to hold his work up to polished glass to see it flipped, so he could improve it.
Having said that, I'm interested to see how you progress with this. Where is the light source going to be coming from?

hey thanks for the tips....i will definitely try that, i can already see how the dragon coming from behind would work. Thanks a bunch!!
