Chul Park has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: Imaginary Friend (

Well, this is it. I really enjoyed participating in this challenge. I learned few stuff while i was doing this too.
Anyways, I wanted to do something out of ordinary. I admit it was difficult to come up with an idea totally different from other people. My main goal was to capture the emotion using lighting, facial expression, and charater gesture. Looking at this, i feel i achieved my goal. Story wise, i guess it's up to you to figure out what story is behind this. I think it's better if the picture alone can tell the story instead of the words. That's all i have to say.
Thx everyone for all your comments.

03 March 2005, 08:14 PM (

just sketching down what i have in my mind. I'm thinking of something sad, but i can't get anything out of my mind yet. I'm thinking it should have at least one of these feelings to it: sadness, love, insomnia, nostalgia, cute, peaceful, dreamy, and comfort. I've been thinking about an idea for about a week. I just want to have some idea that is not very typical relation between master and servant.
One thing I'm debating is on whether to give the piece a dramatic lighting and movement or make it very calm and give it a soft lighting.

03 March 2005, 11:30 PM
make her chin V-type and also don't forget about large round eyes (not anime, but real human eyes) and you'll definetly will get +40 to cute (yeah cute would be nice  )

03 March 2005, 01:40 AM (

Still trying to get an idea down. Right now, all i'm trying to do is capture the emotion and feeling of the piece rather than establishing a solid idea.

03 March 2005, 02:46 AM
youve definately captured sadness in her expression so far... seems like shes leaning up against a mirror.

04 April 2005, 09:24 AM (

I decided to go ahead with the previous sketch.
The concept is that the creature behind the girl is her childhood imaginary friend. She has already grown up and has forgotten about her imaginary friend. As she sleeps, she feels something familiar and warm by her side; something that she does not want to let go. feels nostalgia

I was having trouble with coming up with what kind of creature the imaginary friend should look like. So i ended up drawing a quick rough sketch of a creature with a horn and wings. I might keep or change the creature later.
In the piece, I want to show the girl happy and sad at the same time. The main focus will be the girl's face. It's going to be in a dark room with a small light lighting her face.

hay KAlomus!!!
welcome ^^ nice to see you here^^

Can't wait to see what you'll achieve with...
anyway , your first sketches have great sensibility in the emotion of characters...

04 April 2005, 10:33 AM (

a rough sketch of color and value.

04 April 2005, 11:39 AM (

long sleaves
still very rough

04 April 2005, 12:50 AM (

I started painting the face.
I usually paint the face by itself in a separate file. I started a new face from the scratch, because the original sketch was hard to work with.

In the first face, i blocked in the shape and value, and removed the line art.
in the sencond face i added a little bit of skin tone.

Is the expression in this face clear to you?

04 April 2005, 12:56 AM
It is looking really good but I am unclear on the whole master/servant... Which is which?

The face painting is great so far... As for the imaginary friend, think of all the things that would make her feel comfort. teddy bear, dad, mom, kitten, blanket, and try nad put them into one... It sounds silly but it can really work. A man sized stuffed animal looking kitten with a baby blanket coloring and texture might be really cool. But you get what I mean... It's her "imaginary" friend, so use yours.

04 April 2005, 01:30 AM (

starting to take shape. I added a dimple to accentuate the expression.

04 April 2005, 01:49 AM
The girl is the master and the creature is the servant. The creature is an imaginary friend, and you all probably know what an imaginary friend does (plays with the child). I'm pretty sure imaginary friend takes order from the child instead of the other way around. At least this is what i think.

04 April 2005, 06:04 AM (

here i pasted the face i was working on to the color sketch. It'll look better once i start working on the whole piece.

04 April 2005, 08:10 AM
i like your work a lot! :)
and the idea with the imaginary friend is so cute.. and a little bit sad.. very nice approach to the master and servant-theme.. keep it up!

04 April 2005, 08:28 AM
she looks cute, looks very emotional to me, and nice colors dude, love the mood:)

04 April 2005, 06:35 PM (

i think this is pretty much the color i'm gonna go with.

04 April 2005, 08:07 PM (

I flipped it horizontally to get a new look at it. added some details to the clothes and hand. I desatrated the surrounding, because it started to take away from the face.
So far, I set the concept and the mood. This is about the point where everything starts to slow down for me.

Now i need some suggestions.
What kind of source of light would it be? (something fantasy, glowing something... maybe something like partially opened chest) I kinda placed a little lamp to the side, but i don't think i'm going to go with that.
Also, tell me if anything looks awkward.

I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible and still make it look nice.

I'll take any comments into consideration. Thanks.

04 April 2005, 08:17 PM
Hi there! I think the composition is great, sad yet comforting at the same time. there are two ways you could go: One would be to have the light that the creature(its heart?) gives off, be the main source of light. A protecting, soothing kind of like. Or, as you seem to have suggested slightly to the left, have a window with moonlight coming in, giving you a more desaturated, darker ambient, but still have the warmth from the creature's glow, be the defining, protecting light.

Just a suggestion! I'm sure you'll come up with soemthing much better!
Good luck!

That's some FANTASTIC lighting there man.

I agree with Taric12, lighting looks great!

04 April 2005, 11:43 PM
Nice. Very atmospheric. The table needs a book or some trinkets of some kind. Something so its not just a table with a lamp on it. People generally keep a lot of stuff on their nightstands.

04 April 2005, 12:12 AM
its looking good. i really like the expression on her face

04 April 2005, 01:42 AM
Well, this looks extremely promising. The only thing I can see right now, is that the colors are a bit 'dead' in the wash of light from the lamp, where it should (I believe) be very warm. It would also add a nice complement to the cools of the shadows and moonlight. I think you picked a very challenging pose for the wrist- which doesn't appear relaxed, as though she were sleeping. However, she might very well be having a disturbing dream? My impression of your storytelling is she's dreaming happily, while holding onto the stuffed animal, like a security blanket. I'd go for a more relaxed pose, and even if you stick with this one, I'd suggest getting very good reference of that precise angle of wrist and hand- right now it reads a tad stiff and unnatural anatomy. Her face is just beautiful, and I think it will be a rock-solid piece, if you continue to milk its potential the way you are.

Solid, solid stuff! Great job, and keep it up! I look forward to the next update!

04 April 2005, 01:56 AM
definitely glowing I'd say

04 April 2005, 02:37 AM
Thanks ppl.
I'll be definately making changes in lighting as i continue on. Right now, i wanna make sure everything is where they should be. Putting stuff like book would be a good idea. Maybe a picture or ... maybe a picture book with the drawing of the creature on the cover. I donno, tell me if that seems lame.
I'm still debating on whether to put the lamp or whatever that gives out the main light source. I just want 2 light source; main light and blue moonlight. Maybe a wierd looking lamp, or something........... i just can't get it out of my head.

feeb, thx for pointing out about the hand. I can't actually tell it looks stiff because i've been staring at it so much. I got too used to it. And i did have some trouble with drawing the wrist. It was harder than i had pictured. Anyways, my intention was for the girl to hold on to the creature tight, kinda pulling on it as if she doesn't want to let go. I wanted it to look like as if she was trying to bring it closer to her. If it looks unnatural, what should i do with the hand? or how could i make it look so it really looks like she's pulling on it?

04 April 2005, 03:55 AM (

i guess this fits into concept sketch.

Every once in a while i like to take the piece and mess around with it. Sometimes i add some strange stuff for fun, and other times i mess around with color/value.

Just for the note, this is not part of my coloring procees, but an experiment.

It feels like i have a lot of black negative space. I need some ideas on what to fill it with.

04 April 2005, 05:31 AM
that is so cool, very super nice mood u got there, i bet its a cute dragons huh, look forward to seeing ur next progress, very nice, goodlux!

04 April 2005, 03:50 AM
I love it! the concept, mood, colors, all great! are you doing this in Photoshop?
Also thank you for showing us the thumbnails

04 April 2005, 06:12 PM
Wow, I can't believe this is the first time I've bumped into this entry. Its really great. Great light, colour and form. Can't wait to see the imginary friend in more detail! Good luck.

In regards to making it look like she's pulling on the friend, maybe you could have her holding a finger on the creatures hand instead? Studying how a hand looks when someone has a grip on it might help. Goodluck.

04 April 2005, 03:08 AM
Wow... amazing work! Great mood, and I love the lighting of you're experiment! Good luck!!

04 April 2005, 04:12 AM
As for the negative space, I wouldn't change it much, but define more shapes into the dark, like pictures or bags hanging on the walls, do more sheet folds, etc. Lay out the whole room, even if it will be barely distinguishable and all the detail almost lost.

05 May 2005, 07:02 PM (

Looking back now, i don't like my old concept. So, i came up with a new one; master of paper crane.

05 May 2005, 11:51 PM (

I dont usually make a separate line art for my paintings. I just take my favorite concept thumbnail or sketch and start working off of that. So, i guess this goes into my line art.
I'm thinking I'm goning to have buch of color origami papers pasted on the wall and have it resemble sunset or something.

05 May 2005, 01:01 PM
Hi Kalomus,

I really liked your original concept and I'm sorry to see you abandon it. May be you could finish it and post it in CGTalk in the future. Anyway, your new concept is pretty cool too. So keep moving on that. I'm looking forward to seeing the completed project. Your painting style is really great! Now I have to go crunch on my own Master & Servant project.

05 May 2005, 04:19 AM (

ok, here is my concept.
the girl in the image will have a paper crane on her hand. As she blows it, it flies away as a real crane. The crane will be the messenger servant, where the crane is made out of the girl's letter.

I'm going to add the cranes later.

05 May 2005, 08:54 PM (

Coloring process.
I'm not sure if i should keep it this kind of style( make it kinda less relistic with more colors) or more realistic and less colors. Also, i'm debating on what to put in the background. I'm trying to keep it light over dark on everything to clearly present the forms, but i don't think it's working out very well.

05 May 2005, 09:55 AM
You have a real talent for painting. I cant wait to see how your final will look! I hope you get done! Good luck!

05 May 2005, 02:01 PM
Thank's for ya concerning in my thread man!, that's very helpful.
About the princess here i think she try so hard to blow the crane, I think about blow softly like whisper and the crane fly like a wind to the clear sky, I think the soft color vanish in to white space that mean the unknow but hopeful far beyond the sky, that's all I think.

Keep going man!!

05 May 2005, 09:21 PM (

still roughing it out. Changed couple stuff and made the picture wider. Hopefully i can finish this within a week.

05 May 2005, 03:07 AM
Kalomus: Excellent work. I have confidence in you being able to finish in time. I wish I could say the same. Anyway, I like the color scheme you've chosen. Very soft and fairy tale like. The rendering is top notch also. I'm looking forward to seeing it completed.

05 May 2005, 08:41 PM (

sigh, i changed my concept again. It's kinda late, but i can't help it. I keep getting better ideas while im drawing.

05 May 2005, 03:59 AM (

I decided to finish off my first concept since im running out of time.

05 May 2005, 04:17 AM
Andrew, well I like this concept, I hope you can finish in time it's really nice.

05 May 2005, 05:57 AM (

Not much change. Just saturation change and minor details added. I'm gonna do my best to finish this tonight.

05 May 2005, 08:36 AM
Hi Kalomus,

I remember I saw your work some time before, but missed it in the last days. I already wanted to tell you that I really like the overall feeling and tones. Good work!
Hey, if you still find some time--how about some extra suggestions? It could be a nice contrast if you'd work out the drapes a little bit more (as a counterweight to the very soft-textured imaginary friend)...

Awright, I know time is running short, dude. So good luck...

Hi there Chul

Very nice and moody image You have here, although not much detail in it but i love it, lots of emotions and this hazy look looks really great, hope you can finish it!

05 May 2005, 09:42 AM (

made a slight change in composition, and added some more stuff. I think I'm gonna just leave this simple and just touch up on few stuff.
I appreciate everyone's comments.

I really like this. It has a nice feel to it. It looks like it is from a childerens fantasy film or something. The lighting works really well.

I think that because the image is of something that would be quite still, it reads well as a still image.

05 May 2005, 10:15 AM
nice pic, the work on the characters is really great, good work

05 May 2005, 11:41 AM
wow.. fhow i missed this i dont know but i really love it.... how cute is that creature!!! Very goood

really cute... hurry up dude times almost up!!:bounce: :bounce:

05 May 2005, 07:39 PM
This is extremely adorable and is actually my desktop background right now.

I love the atmosphere and the actual imaginary looks like one I'd have had when I was a child, I had a few of them..

Also, your technique complements the story perfectly- not too realistic and not overly cartoony either, lovely blend.

Good luck in the judging, my friend.:applause:
