Latest Update: Final Image: Final
Here's the final image. Thanks to everyone for your comments/critiques!
03 March 2005, 08:23 PM
Who wouldn't want to control the undead?
The basic premise is that this young guy has managed to raise and control the dead. I'm sure voodoo is involved somehow. Anyway, he's very pleased with himself and his undead army.
This is going to be a slightly stylized image. I'm going for humor as opposed to seriously scary zombies. The zombies won't be too gory and gruesome, although of course there will be some decomposition going on.
The composition and number of zombies is just an approximate right now. For the final composition I'm leaning towards either:
1. Zombies standing around the master (as in the sketch), or
2. A cheesy line-up, with the zombies in a row behind the master.
The line-up appeals to me for reasons of cheesiness.
03 March 2005, 07:16 PM
Started modeling the master.
Not much to say.
04 April 2005, 12:06 AM
Here's the start of his shirt. I'm going to make it longer, and eventualy add wrinkles to it.
04 April 2005, 12:18 AM
welcome to the challenge .. nice model and fun kinda concept ... like the cartoony feel ya got going
good luck
04 April 2005, 11:46 PM
Thanks for the support!
04 April 2005, 11:53 PM
I've finished modeling the master's long-sleeve tee shirt and begun his pants. All that's left to model after the pants is his shoes and a bit of belt sticking out from under his shirt. I should finish modeling this character tomorrow. Then it's on to zombies!
04 April 2005, 12:07 AM
very nice. it will be great if you'll give him the head and shoulders position he has in the sketch. and the expression.
04 April 2005, 12:21 AM
funny concept, keep the updates comin:thumbsup:
04 April 2005, 12:26 AM
cool character design:thumbsup: , looking so good so cartoon!
04 April 2005, 07:54 AM
very nice work on your modeling.
04 April 2005, 08:10 AM
cool style and good modeling:thumbsup:
04 April 2005, 08:13 AM
He is really cool, has loads of style and great model overall...
04 April 2005, 08:16 AM
really interesting design and style on the figure, congrats... that looks really nice !
04 April 2005, 09:56 AM
hey this is a new one!... very cool concept and i like teh style of it.. and for the modleing, its just gr8!!... i totally dig that style... keep up the good works seems like u got some more characters to make... good luck with it bro  c ya around
04 April 2005, 10:20 AM
Nice concept. Beautiful modeling!
As for the setup of the deads: I think grouping them around him gives more variation, than the line..
04 April 2005, 04:08 PM
smaddl - Yes, I'm going to give him the head position and facial expression he has in the sketch.
overcontrast - I've got too many characters to make! I think I'm going to make the zombies in the background hazy and harder to distinguish - like in the sketch. That way I can cheat and make quick crappy models.
marc_lauper - Having the zombies stand in a line behind him would definitely result in a lot less variation in poses. I also realized it's possible that if the zombies are in a line behind him someone might think they're sneaking up on him/going to eat him. If they're around him then it should be obvious that he's in control. I think I'm pretty well convinced to have them around him.
04 April 2005, 04:16 PM
great model !!
c ya !
04 April 2005, 09:04 PM
The master is finished! Huzzah!
04 April 2005, 10:12 PM
Great modeling! Love the style. What kind of lighting/atmosphere are you thinking of?
04 April 2005, 01:18 AM
hey very cool your master
04 April 2005, 07:55 PM
The first zombie.
miketche - As far as lighting I was thinking either a sunrise or sunset. I think vibrant sunrise/sunset colors would better suit the humor in the image than dark moody colors. I'm open to ideas, though.
04 April 2005, 08:04 PM
I really love your style of modeling your characters....Can't wait to see it all come together. Also I would go for sunset since that seems to be a zombies favorite part of the day unless of course master and servant have been up all night rockin out till the break of dawn! Keep up the great work!
04 April 2005, 09:37 PM
Wow Dan, you've injected a really cool comical feel into this piece, it's looking great so far.
This is looking like it will really stand out:thumbsup:
Keep it up man
04 April 2005, 07:15 PM
Progress on zombie #1. I'm thinking I'll give her a nasty bite wound on her arm or hand.
04 April 2005, 07:24 PM
congratulations, I liked style a lot, of the precision in the ways, of the line. I try to also develop that type of style. when I saw this topic, I could not stop writing some thing. Force!!!
04 April 2005, 07:25 PM
Hello Dan, really nice idea and cool style you got, i really like it !
The modeling is really nice so far, do you plan to make texture or leave it in simple cartoon shading ?
I like the characters...nothing to crits, looking forward for more
04 April 2005, 08:27 PM
Love your style man, And I agree it would be quite cool to have a zombie nation to stand behind you :D
04 April 2005, 07:56 PM
cipher- I'm just going to use shaders on the characters, no textures.
04 April 2005, 09:13 PM
Hi again Dan, looking good man:thumbsup: Cant wait to see how you go about messing her up for her life after death...
04 April 2005, 04:25 PM
Began the second zombie. This guy's taken some damage from his undead brethern. I still need to wrinkle his shirt. I'm going to add tears in it as well.
DaddyMack- Yeah, actually I'm planning on having varying degress of damage on the zombies. Some will have more and larger wounds, more tears in their clothing, etc.
I imagine zombie #1 as one of the newest recruits. She's still fresh, so she has less damage than some of the others. I'm going to give her some wear and tear, but relatively minor stuff. I'm thinking one of the other zombies is going to be missing one entire leg of his pants. Just ragged and shredded, with his leg and sock showing underneath.
Thanks everyone for the comments and support!
04 April 2005, 04:35 PM
04 April 2005, 07:08 PM
your characters so characteristic... again "going great".nice style.:)
04 April 2005, 10:53 PM
Here's the completed model of zombie #2.
04 April 2005, 12:11 AM
The next zombie is finished. I changed the idea of a shredded pant leg to a shredded shirt sleeve and put it on this guy.
04 April 2005, 12:44 AM
awesome style. These seem to be very funny zombies.Love those rotten details
04 April 2005, 01:02 AM
going better! waiting your next update!:)
04 April 2005, 08:22 PM
Head of the 4th zombie.
04 April 2005, 07:30 PM
Finished modeling the 4th zombie.
04 April 2005, 08:06 PM
These are turning out pretty nice!
I like Zombie #2's sandalds. (that must sound like a random comment.)
04 April 2005, 04:11 PM
This is a composition test of the main characters.
The enviroment is going to be pretty simple, to keep the focus on the characters.
04 April 2005, 09:51 PM
The main characters with color. It's mostly simple shaders, but there are a few texture maps to get the blood splatter patterns. The lighting is a very temporary thing.
04 April 2005, 10:09 PM
Great models Dan, and really true to your sketches...The texturing just gave them a whole new dimension...Keep it coming mate:thumbsup: It looks like previs for a cartoon series
04 April 2005, 10:34 PM
I love the style, it's coming nicely Dan, the texturing looks really good and fit well to the characters, i can't wait to see them in the environnement
04 April 2005, 11:12 PM
Nice models. Your style is amazing. What you will use for the background? Keep going. :buttrock:
04 April 2005, 11:21 PM
Hey man thats very cool...keep the style:thumbsup:
04 April 2005, 11:37 PM
DaddyMack- Thanks. I neglected to draw modelsheets or profiles, so all I've got to work from is that sketch. BTW- how I would love to see a cartoon series with zombies...:buttrock:
banzato- Behind these main characters I'm going to have a mob of the undead. I don't know what will be behind that. I don't plan that far in advance. I'm contemplating a seaport/industrial type of background. That might get too messy and distracting, though.
04 April 2005, 06:25 PM
I tried different sunset lighting setups, and so far this is the best. I don't like it.
Then I gave up on sunset lighting for a while and tried moonlight instead. I'll post that next.
04 April 2005, 06:27 PM
Here's the moonlight test. This is much better I think.
04 April 2005, 06:45 PM
really looking nice!:) ...super*...
04 April 2005, 03:26 PM
The background zombies. I planned on just having hazy shapes in the background, but I started making zombies and it went faster than I thought.
All the background zombies are based on a generic model that I tweaked to get variations. They're messy, but the lighting I have hides a lot of the rough edges.
04 April 2005, 03:35 PM
it's a very fun idea! And you have good skills, best wishes!
04 April 2005, 03:43 PM
haha, I liked!! Great style and funny idea!!
Keep it up!
04 April 2005, 03:53 PM
It seems to me that it would be nice to bring some of the characters into the foreground. Dunno how, but looking at it I feel like i want to zoom in a bit...
04 April 2005, 04:09 PM
Nice zombie crowd, and they're all different, that's cool ! :)
I like the moonlight lighting, really gives that night/horror movie mood, your work is great man
04 April 2005, 04:35 PM
• Great, I guess Michael Jackson would be jealous of this, all those kids...lol....well yes i know it was a bad joke... sorry, :argh: you are doing an outstanding job, I like the style, i only have a suggestion, put the master in the first plane bigger in a portrait canvas and all the servants around, adoring him, (think of a rock concert)
He is now in the middle of the image and he disolves in the environment, doesn't look important at first sight, the servants seem to be ignoring him as he were invisible, there is also emptyness in front.
Well, thats my contribution to your thread by now, Nice work and remember that outer any crit and comment, the most important opinion belongs to you!
04 April 2005, 06:21 PM
I like it more and more!
04 April 2005, 08:27 PM
Swamps- I definitely know what you mean. I want the master and the 4 lead zombies to stand out.
However, if I pull the 4 lead zombies too far forward they'll seem disconected from the mob. They're still part of the horde - I don't want them to seem way more important than the background guys.
Likewise, I want the master in close proximity to the mob so it's obvious that he isn't afraid of them. I like the idea that he's standing right there in the midst of them.
It's pretty close to finished. The ground is finished. The characters are finished. The background is going to be fairly simple because too much detail will be overwhelming. Maybe a city skyline silhouetted against the sky.
04 April 2005, 09:49 PM
Dan, very cool picture
04 April 2005, 10:05 PM
Whoow many peolple in this picture.
it Looks great.
04 April 2005, 10:57 PM
WOW! I love it! love the eyes of the zombies :D Damn this is sooo cool. Great job man!
04 April 2005, 03:24 AM
Your Zombies are super cool, but one seems to be way more wounded then the others what makes him look more like a zombie then the others, you know the one with glasses and a beard, the one that looks like your avatar.
04 April 2005, 03:38 AM
hilarious stuff ... love it
04 April 2005, 04:23 PM
And with a city skyline.
arlutik- Thanks for pointing that out. I mauled one of the background zombies in the leg, so that there's more than one severly wounded zombie. Still, overall I like the zombies to be relatively intact.
BTW, the zombie with glasses and my avatar are both caricatures of me. I figured if there was a zombie outbreak I'd be the first one bitten.
04 April 2005, 05:25 PM
Eh, all these very cool character, which jobs, go, go.
04 April 2005, 08:31 PM
I had a big feeling it was you just didn't want to take a chance by saying.
Now the city in the background is just what your image needed, with the city it seems like you have twice the number of zombies you had before, really nice touch.
Looking foward to see your final, great work so far. And I tought I was nuts with my puppets.
04 April 2005, 08:34 PM
Incredible scene, nice character and nice style :)
05 May 2005, 06:51 PM
My entry is done. However I didn't do any post effects or compositing, so I don't actually have a postFX/compositing milestone per se...
So here's a render of the city skyline by itself. This will have to do for a compositing milestone. I'll upload the final image next.
05 May 2005, 07:00 PM
Here's the final image. Thanks to everyone for your comments/critiques!
05 May 2005, 08:00 PM
wow soo many characters... i'm amazed... this is a very good work done!!... good luck mate
05 May 2005, 02:58 AM
Hey thats a nice background, and the models are so cool.
Good luck man:buttrock:
05 May 2005, 03:09 AM
You did very well, Dan - I like your style, best wishes!
05 May 2005, 09:55 AM
Funny picture with a good lighting. Also like the colors (I 'm very purple this time).
05 May 2005, 01:02 PM
Hey Dan, congrats on hitting the line so early and in such style:thumbsup:
It was an absolute pleasure to watch this unfold over the weeks mate! Cheers, and good luck with the judging
05 May 2005, 12:52 AM
Really like your style man, great picture !
05 May 2005, 01:33 AM
Hi Dan, I don´t know I could miss this ... Just amazing character!! Realy cool idea. Very funny guy´s face. :bounce:
Congratulations. Great Work.
05 May 2005, 11:10 AM
hmm I know you said it was done.. but have you tried playing around with a bit of ground fog? and maybe lighting up their eyes a bit more.. perhaps also darkening the city line a tad more? since there are no lights back there :D
anyways either way I really love this one, but I feel there are a few little things (like the stuff above) that could really give it that extra kick.. you know?
anyways amazing job man!
05 May 2005, 04:06 PM
Geta-Ve - I had to finish my entry early because I went on vacation on May 5th. I'm on vacation now, until after the 18th, and I don't have access to my computer. So it's done whether I like it or not.
If I had access to my computer I'd try those things you mentioned, especially the ground fog. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.
05 May 2005, 04:10 PM
I just see your thread Dan... and it's yet finish... I love your idea and the picture treatment... very cool, soft and clean... congratulations and best wishes for you entry
