Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: Final (

03 March 2005, 05:37 PM (

Let's see how 3 game characters do in this contest:) Here is the boss for the end-level of a game. 'Death' has a pet beaten up angel as his servant and he is using her powers to destroy who ever would try to vanquish him. The pose here is a hint of what I am aiming for in my final 3d layout. She will be crying because she will be forced to use her godly power to slay her would be hero (being designed as we speak;) ).

03 March 2005, 05:52 PM
hey i love the sketch. looks like an exciting submition. maybe make the composition a little more exciting by off centering the two characters. otherwise, awesome start.

04 April 2005, 09:34 PM (

Working on the Angel's head. I decided that I will create an Asian women for my Angel. Right now, there are a little too many polygons for the face alone, so a little optimizing will be needed once the body is finished.

04 April 2005, 01:02 AM
I love the concept sketch. And I really like the idea of having the person be asian. Are you going to make the eyes brown, or go for an unnatural color, like purple or yellow? Or maybe black, I always was curious how deep black eyes would look on a picture.

Sorry, I'm obsessed with color. So I'm looking forward to see how you color the wings and all.

04 April 2005, 01:47 PM (

Building her up...

04 April 2005, 01:54 PM
Dragongirl --> I might try for violet or maybe gold, however, her eyes might be closed in the final render. I am glad you like the quick concept sketch, hopefully, the model will be better hehe:)

04 April 2005, 09:31 PM (

Building her up and getting her ready for textures. She's currently under 4,100 polygons.

04 April 2005, 09:34 PM
hey what part of Canada u from ?? ..damn i have a similar idea for this contest lol

04 April 2005, 09:55 PM

04 April 2005, 10:35 PM (

I have started on the textures for the Angel. Usually, I start my models in black and white so as to not loose any time thinking about what colors goes with what. At this stage, I will have to go back to sketching to figure out her clothing design....

04 April 2005, 10:49 PM
Marcus_B --> I currently live in Montreal, I am glad to hear that we both thought of the same thing hehe

The 1st_Angel --> Hey you! Your entry for the Alien world was one of my favourites:) I am glad to hear that you like what I have so far, but, I still need to design the third character arghh! I wish you the best with your entry as well.

Virtuoso --> Hey there... yup, I have been trying to hide in my little corner of cgtalk, but, you found me hehe. I am glad to be entering along with you in the challenge as well again my old friend. Your entry is coming along extremely nicely! I look forward to seeing you at the finish line... and hopefully, I'll be there too:)

04 April 2005, 11:59 AM
Low-poly beauty....Subsrcibed....the concept looks real nice...can't wait to see this finished

04 April 2005, 10:00 PM (

Since time is running short, a more solid sketch for the environment was required. It was created by pencils and photoshop.

04 April 2005, 10:11 PM
Damn really a powerful background. But the girl her hands should be a little bit bigger because she is putting them to the front. An now the perspective isn't really correct i think. but for the rest damn man really cool. Keep goiing.

04 April 2005, 10:51 PM
It's cool to see a low poly process. What amazing me is your skills in both 3d and 2d. Nothing to crit about, you're a pro! :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 12:29 AM
WOW I love your idea, I will follow you closely

04 April 2005, 11:19 AM
great Environment sketch. the girl is lovely. i'm curious to see her with texture.

04 April 2005, 05:09 PM
Hey, thanks for the kind words you guys! it's really appriciated and I am glad you like my work so far:)

crapple --> I agree about the hands, they could have maybe been a little bigger. If I should do a more polished look for that particular quick sketch, I will be sure to keep this in mind. Many thanks for the crit, it's appriciated.

taz23 --> Yes, I am currently an environment modeler at work. I am an Assistant modeler (lowest rank). I am kind of new to the gaming industry:)

Kraull --> Thanks, coming from you (loved your space opera entry) it means alot.

Mr.Waka --> Actually, my 2d is my weakest link:) I am better at 3d...

pigwater --> Yes, it has been awhile since I have been a participant in these comps. I even have a new forum name... I am surprised you recognized me:p

Thanks again for the comments. I'll post an update of my Angel on Monday.

04 April 2005, 05:57 PM

04 April 2005, 07:13 PM
excellent .......u r doing welll ......waiting for more WIP

04 April 2005, 10:11 PM

Here's the concept for the Main Hero. His name is: Argonom! Although a knight of Virtue, he is not afraid to get down and dirty for some good butt kicking! Ok, no more concepts, its 3d time!

04 April 2005, 03:23 PM
i like the concept very much and the sketches are stunning for having such details , keep up the good work , good luck for the challenge

04 April 2005, 04:55 PM
This one rock's! You done a very good concept, now your three characters are really great and they wait to be alive in 3D version!

04 April 2005, 05:51 PM
dude i mean dude... your concepts are breathtaking... your female model was pretty cool.. lets see this fellow come into action... just fantastic skill in drawing you have i must say!! :arteest

05 May 2005, 01:19 AM (

Still needs to be optimized. The model so far stands at 5311 polygons. I am aiming for 5k for the hero and 4k for the angel. I also still need to correct the proportions a bit, but I\'ll wait until the textures are in.

05 May 2005, 05:13 AM
I can tell by your great start, this is going to be awesome>
Hehe, from you weapon descriptions I can tell your big into you RPG games.

05 May 2005, 02:41 AM (

Working now on the main boss character: Death. He is still in the early stages, so I am still playing around with the proportions. Nothing is final.

05 May 2005, 11:12 AM (

Played around with the polies and came up with this. Now it is ready for textures. The form will probably change one last time during the texturing phase.

05 May 2005, 06:03 PM (

Ok, I changed the model once again and commenced texturing it. I am using one 1024 x 1024 sheet for him and his weapon together.

05 May 2005, 08:30 PM
i love everything i c here... very nice style.. and u got some amazing concept arts there... i'm inspired by u... keep it up mate

05 May 2005, 09:52 PM
Great concepts and clean modeling...can't wait to see your characters evolve

05 May 2005, 09:38 AM
Absolutely brilliant texturing.

05 May 2005, 10:27 AM
Hi Fredrik! Really nice everytihng concept, sketch modeling and environment. I am waiting next update with impatience:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 08:24 PM
amazing stuff :wip:
good luck

05 May 2005, 01:07 PM
How long did it take you to model Argonom? Ace sketch of him, can't wait to see how he turns out

05 May 2005, 01:19 PM
Hey, very cool stuff :) nice to see you entering a challenge again :D

05 May 2005, 03:10 PM
Cool textures. This character remind me the Dementors of Harry Potter movie .. hehehe

05 May 2005, 04:06 PM (

Ok, Death is finished:)

Next up... Angel!!

05 May 2005, 04:14 PM
Here's the texture sheet (not including opacity sheet). In its original form, it's 1024, but I shrunk it for da web. (hmmm, maybe I should have submitted the sheet on the official site... doh! Oh well, next time...)

M@ --> Hey you! It's been awhile my friend!:) Yes, It has been too long since I entered a comp here, but, I was waiting for the right topic (something with characters!) I miss the ol gang, but, I see you went on to become a moderator... sweet stuff dude. You certainly got what it takes!

Louis J. Browne --> It took four nights to model him (I work during the day). But I am still not happy with him because he currently lacks the proportions to make him pop (feel right). He still needs some tweaking. Otherwise, I am glad you like my work soo far!

05 May 2005, 03:32 AM (

Ok, here's a work in progress shot of the Angel thus far. Still have to tear into her some more (cuts and scrapes, broken wing etc..). She is comprised of 4200 polygons and has one 1024 texture sheet for her diffuse (along with an opacity map).

05 May 2005, 03:49 AM
hehe. didn't expect it to be a gaming model

05 May 2005, 12:12 PM
Heh, yeah, it's been a while.. and yes, I'm on the dark side now :D
Very beautiful models/textures here, it's cool that you've chosen to do that game art style!

05 May 2005, 07:11 PM (

Ok, Here is just a quick mock up of what I am aiming for. I guess there is no need to mention that Pose, expressions, and everything else is not final?

05 May 2005, 07:15 PM (

Here is a full shot of the completed Angel. I am not quite sure, but she might not be bloody enough to enhance the slavery captured look. I might fix this towards the end.

05 May 2005, 07:39 PM
I don't know what your final picture will look like but your character are really incredible (and that's not a work I use often). Just :applause:

05 May 2005, 08:13 PM
I like your idea a lot, and I love characters, it continues this way

05 May 2005, 11:16 PM
Very very good work, fantastic use of textures, and exceptional cute little angel. looking forward to your next update, looking great!

05 May 2005, 01:23 AM
you are already master game art ! nice model and awesome texture! I think your entry must have the lowerest poly count in this challenge!! do u have to put life bar to make it look like screenshot in game? i like this idea! good luck!

05 May 2005, 07:15 AM
Hey guys, I am really glad you like everything so far:)

monsitj --> Yes, the life bar will have to be in! Hopefully, it will look better then the one I currently have heheh. Yup, that was my goal, to enter with a very low poly game style. In the end, I will try to convey that 'game screen shot' look as best I can to make it look as authentic as possible. Thanks for you encouraging words, your entry is coming out fantastic too dude! Definately a top contender:thumbsup:

the1st_angel --> Many thanks!

authentic --> I am glad you like everything thus far. Still one character to go...

yeray --> Thanks. Hope you will like the final scene even more:)

Ok, next up... the Hero!

05 May 2005, 07:31 AM
Hi Fredh

A great work these doing, note that you dominate to the modeling few

Very good textures. :)

Bonne chance.

05 May 2005, 09:57 AM
The two char (angel and spectral one) are really good !
Can't wait to see the background mapped :)
Low Poly style rocks, especially the head gauge lol

05 May 2005, 10:27 AM
FredH You are da Master!, up for now it looks great! no crits :bounce: :bounce:

05 May 2005, 10:46 AM
Great texture work. Can't wait to see the final charcter in place

05 May 2005, 04:53 PM
hahah just like in the good old days, "hurry hurry" :D

nothing much to say about your work atm. it's already one of the better pieces in this challenge. and you're very brave to join with lowpoly-work!!

well.. I'm confident you'll make it in time Fredrik, atleast with a few minutes.... :D

I wonder why we keep joining these challenges, it just gives us more deadlines to keep..

05 May 2005, 05:05 PM
I wonder why we keep joining these challenges, it just gives us more deadlines to keep..

Guess who's the clever one :wise:

05 May 2005, 12:45 PM
Luv the textures & design.
I'd luv to see how you work, as it looks very effective. Keep going, myman.

05 May 2005, 01:24 PM
Hey, I am glad you guys like my work thus far:)

Fellah --> You know, actually, I am not sure I'll make it but, hopefully, I can get something together. Otherwise ya, what were we thinking when we entered this one?! I think these next few days are going to be really painful as I stop sleeping entirely, and for what? The salery is bad and we certainly don't get the girls heheh See you at the finish line dude!

pierre_bixquert --> Merci, Hopefully, you will like my finished work even more:)

Grorum --> Hopefully, my final health bar will be a little better hehe, thanks for the encouragement!

Louis J. Browne --> I wish I could post more, but no time. I'll be just lucky to finish at this point. Besides that, I am glad you like my work!

M@ --> I bet you're eating popcorn, and watching tv from the sofa while you watch us with a casual and occasional glance, scurry about pulling out our hairs to finish. Clever guy!

05 May 2005, 04:58 PM
.............and we certainly don't get the girls heheh
strange.. I get alot.. ;)

sure you'll make it on time. I have tons of faith in you(just as I USED to have for m@), don't ruin it please.. gogogo :)

05 May 2005, 07:29 AM (

I have begun to texture the paladin. He is 4968 polygons and has one 1024 sheet for the main body and one 512 sheet for his shield and weapon. The choice of color is not final yet. I am still in the process of blocking him in (finishing the base). When he is finished, he will be alot more messy and perhaps bloody too. After all, defeating death ain't an easy thing:)

05 May 2005, 11:10 AM
strange.. I get alot.. ;)

sure you'll make it on time. I have tons of faith in you(just as I USED to have for m@), don't ruin it please.. gogogo :)

I get of girls too....but they are afraid of my wife..she will hurt them :banghead: .....a lot:scream: .

And yes Anders ...i have faith in u's very good stuff and u have to finish this...

05 May 2005, 12:47 PM
woha! I really have the "paladin's look" I like him, but I'm not sure about the pink color ;), I can't wait to see him finished.

See ya soon for a naruto/soulkalibur game (I'll crush you  )

Nice work

05 May 2005, 12:48 PM
He really have the paladin's look.....not I......monday morning is always a pain in the ass

05 May 2005, 12:57 PM
Very cool, Fred ! you can make it !

05 May 2005, 10:33 AM (

Ok, Here's the paladin. There is still a few things that could be improved on, but, I'll get to that if I have time.

05 May 2005, 10:53 AM
Rodrigue, I can beat you in soul calibur with one hand tied behind my back!! But, I think might need more hands to win at naruto hehe. We should celebrate once this comp is over!! Otherwise, I am glad to see that you are already done. It was great having a friend who worked on a comp at the same time as I. Wish you the best of luck in the 2d section (you got my vote:) )

DimitrisLiatsos --> Thanks, it means alot coming from you. Your entry came out really nicely and I look forward to seeing it on the finals page:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 05:57 PM

Love your style!

05 May 2005, 11:05 PM
The palladin looks great...can't believe the poly count's so low

Final please :D

05 May 2005, 11:34 AM
palladin looks mighty fine, very heroic looking face!

but.. doesn't the number 18 tell you aything..? :wip:

05 May 2005, 02:39 AM (

Ok, here's the base and tests for lighting.

05 May 2005, 02:42 AM (

Added some effects. but I still have the menu bar and a few more things to go.

05 May 2005, 02:51 AM
Your individual elements have been nicely constructed and placed in the scene. You've definitely got an interesting sense of drama in there. Just one concern is that your lighting scheme should be more dramatic to match that sense of action. You may want to consider adding backlighting or some other technique to lift the dark cloaked character from the background because he is getting a little lost due to the similar dark hues of his clothing and the background.

A good way to check is to change your image into grayscale and increase the contrast. If you cannot clearly see the defined shapes, then it means your composition is a bit confused.

So if you have time (and there isn't much left!) then that is something you may want to consider.

05 May 2005, 02:57 AM
many thanks leigh!! I am doing it now!!

05 May 2005, 03:21 AM (

Since Rendering is obsolete for this entry (I just do a screen grab so it looks more authentic heheh), I'll just hand this thingy in.

05 May 2005, 04:08 AM (

05 May 2005, 04:58 AM
Awesome! Great work Fredrik, on all fronts:thumbsup::thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 11:06 AM
first thing I noticed was that the dark character is very hard to read. then I saw leigh pointed out the same thing, and you said you would try to fix it. but I don't think you fixed it enough. actually I find it easier to read him in the previous image due to the
color shift he had from the background.
a strong rimlight just around him made by the angels light would do the trick. could easily be painted in PS.

another thing, the dark characters right his hand is kinda pointless in the scene atm. it could express much more. maybe with his hand back, palm pointing toward the viewer, opened, almost like he was going to take the paladin.

but who am I to say this.. just a looser who couldn't finish on time..

good luck in the voting. I've alot of respect for your work and your ability to finish even though time is little(everytime)

05 May 2005, 11:22 AM
Is this a new videogame???? Great image and different. good luck

05 May 2005, 02:11 PM
Fred, I'm really interested in see more of your stuff! I hope you post generally more frequently... even more so, I hope you start something new straight away!
The characters you built where fantastic!

05 May 2005, 06:32 PM
Fellah --> Hey there ol' buddy! Actually, I don't like my entry much either:sad: I put in a request to have it pulled from the challenge. I am sure we will both do better next time:)

Louis J. Browne --> Hey thanks! Once I get confirmation that my entry has been pulled, I'll post my work in the finished gallery section. I'll probably start something new sooner or later, but for now, I need a small brake.

05 May 2005, 08:08 PM
great stuff... congratulations!

05 May 2005, 01:34 AM
dude, nice entry, modeling and textures are very good and here comes the bashing!!

Someone probably told u this already on the other replies, but too much to read makes me a very lazy reader.. anwayz, my biggest concern for your entry would be your composition, too much stuff on the left side and the dark character is way too hard to make out also the size between the angel and the reaper are too similar, weakening (is that a word?) your image. Remember when we talked about rim lights? this woulve been a perfect time to use it, since your angel seem to be pouring light, some rim light on the dark character woulve made him alot easier to read. Another thing would be ... shadows ... cant believe you forgot that -_-'' that woulve added more depth.

I liked it alot, but again I was disappointed with the composition.

BTW. hows life now? going to china soon and freelance yourself? drop me a msg or email so I can bash on your image some more ;-) its Nghiep from EA

05 May 2005, 03:13 AM
dude, you are too lazy! hehe

In the post just above, I said I was pulling my entry from the finals. It's crap! Don't get me started on it. I was so exhausted from overworking, I couldn't make any sane desicions by the end of the comp. Texturing, lighting and then compositing an environment in one day is not enough time. So, yes, I knew about shadows, but alas, I had no time to put them in. Anyways, I'll get it right next time:)

As for China, yes, probably leaving very soon. I am looking into it. I think I will just take it easy for awhile and enjoy my stay there. So, no Freelancing or looking for work for now. Maybe I'll actually apply somewhere around November, but there's no rush:)

05 May 2005, 06:32 PM
Donīt be cruel with yourself, itīs a beautiful image, and the most important: itīs an original scene. Congratulations and good luck.

Go, go goooooooooooo friend

06 June 2005, 04:43 AM
Very nice....that knight is awesome.......i was like dang!! ahaha
