This is an idea of how i will present the final image.Rendering with mental ray and HDRI.
Any advices are welcome

Inspired by the religious scene of the Roman soldier punishing Christ.I selected the particular topic because I beleive is a very dynamic scene, with a twist. The powerfull master becomes with his will the servant and the servant becomes the master. For the viewers, knowing the twist, the soldier becomes a tragic character, without knowing that the power is being given to him by the "servant"!
First time I register in the challenge so any advice will be helpfull.Following two very quick drawings from the enviroment and the two characters.

Well ,I will try to create exactly the Roman's soldier uniform.I have taken refrences from history books and ...EBAY.Yes, if you check under roman soldier you will find colorfull toys hand painted from Russia that following exactly the uniform customs. His nose is bumpy, reminds me portraits of roman emperors.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Now that I remember to save some of the progress I am sending it.Since the roman soldier will have a full armor on his body ,I will use the same human model for the Christ.

03 March 2005, 11:10 PM
Looking pretty good so far. The only thing that is bothering me is the bump on the arch of the nose is just a little big but just a little. Other wise it looks good.

03 March 2005, 11:13 PM
Thank you sh@rd for the advice I will touch it up!

Well since my texturing and lighting SUCKS...any advice would be appreciated.I did some test with Maya software render, but for the final I will use Global Illumination. From this tests I am not happy at all,so I am waiting for some help.
Thank you

Very promising modeling man:bounce:
keep up and good luck

04 April 2005, 12:15 AM
Hey. Your texturing looks like it's getting a good start, but a little big and streched out in places. What helped me the most was actually going out and looking at walls. Pictures are good for ideas, but there's something about seeing the actual texture and size relations of real textures that suddenly made things click for me. After a little bit of doing that, I realized that what I remembered seeing and what I was actually seeing were completely different and my ideas were all wrong. Plus, getting out into the fresh air sometimes helps clear up the thinking process.

Hi MAtt,

I will follow your advice ,thank you very much. And the idea to getting out it is realy what I need right now.You just read my mind.So I will start looking around at the real world.
Thank you again

A little work more in texturing and a couple small things in modeling for the scene.

04 April 2005, 03:11 AM (

Hello everybody,
Not to much work today just model the face of the Roman Centurion who will watching the punishment.Needs some more work to become completly smooth.Texture has not being applied .Only some shaders for refrences of colors.

04 April 2005, 06:58 AM (

Same technic as the roman's face, but this time using alot the split polygon tool.Rendered with a light shader and a small bump map.Thnking to render the whole concept as a marble sculpture with one only shader. It is a possibility...when I will have completed the scene i will decide.

04 April 2005, 07:19 AM (

just finished the Christ.rendered quickly with default lights.Has not being applied texture.Only some shaders for references.this is why everything looks cartoonish at the moment.I want to finish the modeling first and after I will focus in texturing to photorealistic style. Not to much more remaining for modeling so I think I will have plenty of time for texturing renedring and post production.

04 April 2005, 09:53 PM (

Finished with the other roman soldier.Almost finished the modeling.I will have to start riging, paint weights, pose the characters in the enviroment and set camera and lights. After will remain texturing ,rendering and post production touch-ups.A long way to go,but finally I am finihing the second milestone.Any advices and critique would be appreciated.

04 April 2005, 09:58 PM
i think you should review some parts of the christ. specially his abs

but overall i think it is very fine. lots of details on the roman soldier. just the textures that needed some work, like mix matterials with degrades

04 April 2005, 10:02 PM
Hi guismo,
yes you are right.I need to touch up Christ body.I did it fast and they are parts that I do not like either.I will follow your advice. Also for the texturing,I have not texture yet, only I have put some shaders without bump maps to have an idea about the color refrences.
Thank you.

04 April 2005, 10:07 PM
Great work cant wait to see some textures, keep it up.

04 April 2005, 10:18 PM
Thank you cg219 for your nice words.I have to try hard, since out there ,are some realy great talents in modeling. If it was a challenge for SFX would be a different story. But this challenge is great apportunity since is pushing me to upgrade my modeling skills that are not so great.

04 April 2005, 06:21 AM (

After fixing the stomach area on the model,I started the first stage of texturing.Needs more hours in the uv maping .Just dropping the early work to hear any feedback.
My apologies for the violent scene

04 April 2005, 07:20 AM (

Well, one more day straight 18 hours work, and I finished the set up of the composition.Characters need a liitle more texture(maybe I will do it in post production)and I have to try different renders with diferent light. This one is with Maya software render and the \"four rules\" spot light.I do not know why but Maya scene is to heavy.Maybe i will have to render in Layers if I will use mental ray to go for the realistic look.I do not know if this is what I want.I am trying something more stylist.I do not want to remind a remix of Passion of Christ.this is not my atempt.I am trying to pass a message that sometimes Master is the one that he can handle to be the servant. So for me the scene has a metaphoric(I do not know if I spell it right but..)meaning.
As always C & C are welcome

04 April 2005, 09:32 AM
wow you've done very much already, good work, only thing, i think the textures are a bit to clean, for example the stone pillar in the front left

04 April 2005, 09:39 AM
your modeling is nice:thumbsup: but i think the texturing needs some tweaking.
Cant wait to see more updates buddy:bounce:

04 April 2005, 11:07 AM
Thank God for thumbnails in the forums or Id would have missed this one. Very nice thus far I really like what you have done up to this point. Looking forward to seeing more.

04 April 2005, 04:11 PM
Hi Jelmer,
you are right about the textures.I have to touch them up.I will blend some layer shaders to make it look more natural. As for the pilar, thank you for the advice and for sure i have to work on it.It is in front of the scene and needs special attention

Hi Mr Micro26,
I have to correct some parts of themodeling also.It looks to static. And yes the texturing is the big issue.Thank you and I am waiting to see your updates.

Hi kid mesh, yes the thumps are very helpfull.Thank you that you stop by,and I am looking forward to your updates also.

Any C&C is welcome

Hi Spyros,
This is a great idea for the master/servant contest. I think I would raise the scourging post so that the chains are fastened higher up in the image. Great image so far.

04 April 2005, 12:24 AM (

Correcting the textures on the pilar and puting some more shaders at the columns I did the final rendering.Since I decide to not go for the realistic look but rather for the artistic painting look,I rendered in Maya software and I played with the Dmap shadows to make them more soft and to give a little more 2d style.

04 April 2005, 12:32 AM (

Since I wanted to give the look of an old Byzantine Icon,I created in photoshop some scratches and chips of the painting appearing the canvas mesh with the white rabbit glue as it realy happens in egg tempera painted on canvas and glued on wood.

04 April 2005, 12:54 AM (

And here it is.Simple ,without the apportunity to create something extra ordinary of fantasy, since it reffers to history and facts, but with a powerfull meaning of who realy is the Master.I took from the challenge and I presented the metaphysical meaning.Master is the one that has the internal power, peace & kindness ,to become the servant. And what a better way to show that rather than an old Byzantine spiritual icon that you found one day in the Flea market.Because the most important things coming in this life are the ones that have a deeper meaning, making you think and go beyond the common sense.
Good luck to all the challengers. It was realy a great experience.

looks great and cool idea about presentation, see you and

04 April 2005, 08:03 PM
Nice going spyro... I like how you pulled this off... One suggestion is to kind of reduce the bump in some objects because it looks a little much in places but that might hae been what you where after so... Looks great either way....
