View Full Version : Pu Yi, Alberto Blasi (3D)

03 March 2005, 01:52 AM (

Title: Pu Yi
Name: Alberto Blasi
Country: Italy
Software: BodyPaint, CINEMA 4D

I got inspired by a photo made by the National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry in Rangoon, Burma (1994) and by the main character of a movie, Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Emperor, which is about the last chinese emperor Aisin Gioro Pu Yi, so i decided to give my character the same name. Of course this doesn't want to be a copy of anything real at all, that's all i look for when i make 3D characters: creating life through the digital medium.
The modeling has been made in CINEMA 4D R9, same about the rendering. All the textures (except the background photo that comes from a frame of the Last Emperor dvd) are 100% hand painted with BODYPAINT 3D R2, 3k square resolution, the fur is Shave&Haircut. I also used the Translucent plugin and the Chanlum plugin in the luminance channel, the first for a good SSS look and the second combined with a fresnel shader for a tad peach fuzz on the edges. I also added some colour correction in post and then 3 different blurred passes of film grain, to achieve the same look of the movie.
What i was after is a serious strong look, in strong contrast with the tender age of the kid. I hope you like it.
Alberto "ThirdEye" Blasi.

That is an awesome render! The eyebrows look a little strange, but other than that, I think it's fantastic.

03 March 2005, 03:51 AM
I agree, something with the eyebrows throws me off...looks fantastic though.

03 March 2005, 04:43 AM
Great work Alberto. As mentioned the eyebrows look off a bit, the lips are looking a tad strange, mainly the spec and corner of the mouth. The scalera (white part) of the eyes looks to be a tad bit too dark. I konw eyes are one of the toughest parts of a character, and you did a really nice job with them, they just look a little flat, and the scalera is off just a bit. There is also some wierd dirt or something on his upper lip that's a bit distracting. Excellent piece overall though. Well done.

03 March 2005, 05:34 AM
excellent and photoreal except for the eyebrows, as said above.

03 March 2005, 06:00 AM
5 stars ....awesome work

03 March 2005, 06:03 AM
you already know what i think :)

great job man.

03 March 2005, 06:06 AM
Very nice rending!!!

03 March 2005, 06:08 AM
I really like it, but it's realism causes some (missing?) aspects to stand out. There seems to be no actual tear ducts, altho it might be caused by contrast, and more noticeable is the lack of (or the barely noticeable) eye lashes. That's what I notice anyway.

Good job anyway!

03 March 2005, 06:13 AM
Great job.

03 March 2005, 06:14 AM
Great work, :)

awesome render, Shaped and shaders !!:bounce:

03 March 2005, 07:46 AM
I usually don't give comment on work..because there are so many cool stuff on this forum, I would spend my time doing it..but this one really really stand out, I got very touch by the character, such a mood !!
the render is great for sure, but something about the picture that carry me on..absolutly amazing !!

10 star for me.

03 March 2005, 08:10 AM
Superb work!!! :)

And an excellent plug for Cinema 4D's abilities - in the right hands - certainly not mine... ;0)

03 March 2005, 08:13 AM

Excellent work!

03 March 2005, 08:17 AM
cool nice work!! :applause:

03 March 2005, 08:18 AM
Wonderful pic, man...

I love the life inside that glance, the lighting and the shaders. About the eyebrows... it seems as if the hairs were sanded down. Do you know what I mean? ;)

Happy to see your work on this board again.

03 March 2005, 08:19 AM
:applause: BRAVO! :applause: Astonishing work, man!

03 March 2005, 08:26 AM
oh my god!! five stars for me!

bravo Alberto :bounce:

03 March 2005, 08:28 AM
Very good work congratulation :buttrock::applause:

03 March 2005, 08:31 AM
Aisin Gioro Pu Yi really stands out on the CGTalk homepage. As a moving character it could work very well. Those details like the spot on the lips and fury eyebrows wouldn't be so noticable moving. Perhaps the missing detail that struck me the most was the lack of eyelashes. These could be done with a simple plane with eyelashes mapped on and cut-out with an alpha map.

The skin is perfect and would be keen to learn more about the use of SSS.

03 March 2005, 08:43 AM
Oh my... Before I read everything posted above, I really thought this image was a photo of a movie make up or something. Truly awesome!!!

03 March 2005, 09:22 AM
BRAVO! ..this is a beautiful piece of art ... the modeling and the texturing are really well done ..and his expression is so deep makes the scene so real ..
that's made my day!

:applause: :applause::applause:

03 March 2005, 09:28 AM
Excellent. Modeling a kid's face is definitely a challenge. A little off and he would look like a midget or an alien. Not that i'm saying midgets look like aliens..

I bow before you... and request a wireframe shot :)

03 March 2005, 09:28 AM
OMG!!! it's very realistic !! nice work Thirdeye !!
sei l'orgoglio Italiano con C4D!!! :scream:

03 March 2005, 09:29 AM
Fantastic job, great modeling, texturing, rendering... Forget about eyebrows, you know what they say: if its perfect, it looks CG. If its not, its for real.

One question: why did you need such a high texture resolution?

03 March 2005, 09:34 AM
love the overall quality, the colors are warm and beautiful :)
I have to agree about the eyebrows ;)

03 March 2005, 09:43 AM
EN: good work!!!

IT: sti ca..i!!!

:applause: :applause:

03 March 2005, 09:43 AM
GREAT! GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!... wire please....

03 March 2005, 10:08 AM
Wow, great render !!! impressive, nothing more to say !!!

Very good job ! I like it... :bounce: ***** five stars for me !

03 March 2005, 10:14 AM
Very nice! dodgy eye brows but cool!!

03 March 2005, 10:17 AM
as always great work mate!
he has really strong look.

03 March 2005, 10:37 AM
wow so many replies, thanks a lot to everyone! But let me reply to everyone:

Leigh, Jarrede, Wedge: thx a lot, agreed about the eyebrows, i sharpened them so much they're actually too sharp now, i'll blur them back a bit

BillSpradlin: actually you're right, very good points

PhilOsirus: they'd both be good points for a standard european character, but asian kids are like that, some part of the eyes (the inner corner) are hidden but some skin that overlaps and the eyelashes are almost unnoticeable, look at this photo reference

neofg: thanks man, i currently live in Rome

kholio and all the others who requested a wireframe: here it comes

lemiere: actually the spot on the lips was intentional, it's a characteristic of the real kid who played in the movie that inspired me hehe. About the SSS... I used two plugins for that. The first one is Vreel's Translucent to get a good translucency fake, the second one is Happy Ship's Chanlum, which is perfect to get the peach fuzz effect when combined with a fresnel shader. I hope this helps.

Byla: i usually use big textures because they're the only one that look good even for closeups, when i start doing something i don't really know what the final camera/point of view will be like

Thanks a lot to all the others too :)

03 March 2005, 10:46 AM
excellent job!
Very emotional image and cool work especially on that lightning and texturing
Looking forward to seeing more art from you ;)

03 March 2005, 10:47 AM
Hi ThirdEye,
remember me?
Anyway, Ill join the choir: Beautiful!!

03 March 2005, 10:49 AM
It could be just my impression but MAYBE the cgtalk system compressed the pic down... Anyway for the ones who're interested here's one with the eyebrows corrected and in a higher size, maybe it looks better

03 March 2005, 10:59 AM
Nice work 3rd...I would like to see a little less DOF though personally...that's just a small gripe...but overall I would give you a 4...nicely done man.:):buttrock:

03 March 2005, 11:02 AM
impressionante... really stunning congrats !

03 March 2005, 11:03 AM
Great work Alberto :)

(same comment as the others about the eyebrows  )

03 March 2005, 11:08 AM
Truly astonishing! Superb work! Although I think you should still adjust the eyebrows a littlebit. It looks as if they were added with Photoshop or something.. I like 3D :D :D But further: Really amazing:)

03 March 2005, 11:14 AM
Awesome work man..just awesome....

03 March 2005, 11:22 AM
VERY NICE! There's nothing I could crit! and a

03 March 2005, 11:25 AM
Wow! The child looks awesome man! The spec on the eyebrows might need to me turned down abit....but other than that it's perfect. Increadible!

Alberto, that's insane crazy man. looking most definitely ACE.

that said, I would really urge you to add some eyelashes, I know you worked from the reference where they weren't visible, but I've learned that to create a believable cg image you need to do what is expected. people expect eyelashes.

Not talking about those huge things them girls of dreams have ofcourse, just slightly thin just barely visible eyelashes that give you the idea they're there but aren't obvious if you knowwhat I mean.

apart from that i'd say this ROCKS.

03 March 2005, 11:36 AM
Beautiful work Alberto!

03 March 2005, 11:56 AM
awesome! great work!

Adam Gur
03 March 2005, 12:42 PM
hey, awesome work, but besides the crits already mentioned, I think his right ear looks too opaque, and consequently the shadow is way too strong in the fold.... hope this helps,

03 March 2005, 12:45 PM
It's just gorgeous. Nice piece of work on the skinshader.:)

03 March 2005, 01:06 PM
Great work "master" Alberto :)

Like Sheep said, you already know what i think of this piece, but in case you forgot, it simply ROCKS :buttrock:

03 March 2005, 01:29 PM
I think u have done a wonderful job, great render, great modeling, and great texturing except for the eyebrows (even if u blurred them in the last render).

I would modify a little the mouth.... 5 stars for me!

03 March 2005, 01:42 PM
Beautiful work. Congratulations.

03 March 2005, 02:18 PM
This is so damb good! Great skin tone! Very nice. How was the skin done? Shaders, special plug, good ol fashion paint?
Great job

03 March 2005, 02:25 PM
Well done,
I've seen the photo you inspired to, and I think you're right for the eyebrows.
The image is absolutely ace, a deep CG ART's example.
Congratulation, I'm looking forward to see another piece of your art!!!

03 March 2005, 03:09 PM
Wonderfull work - the yellow hue makes it even more alive.
Congratulations to such wonderfull work.

03 March 2005, 03:13 PM
It is a great render but there are a couple of things that throw me off. The eyebrows look weird but the top of the head, like the forehead and up bulge out. It is slight but i think once you notice it, its hard not to notice it if you know what I mean. Most people's heads do not bulge out like that at the forehead.

Great image however, very nice texturing and rendering.

03 March 2005, 03:14 PM
Well, I already told you, but it certainly deserves the front-page billing.

03 March 2005, 03:18 PM

yeah most people's heads don't, asian kid's unfortunately do ;),%20The.jpg

03 March 2005, 03:20 PM
Front page material, no doubt about that... lots of stars from me :D (inspite of the eyebrows that are quite disturbing)
Absolutely Super Stuff

03 March 2005, 03:31 PM
I can't believe it isn't a photo but a 3D work. Looks incredibly real. Great work!

By the way, that movie is great, one of my favorites.

03 March 2005, 03:36 PM
Great work!! Well done.

03 March 2005, 03:49 PM
yeah!great! "ai xin jue luo pu yi"

03 March 2005, 04:16 PM
Very nice work ThirdEye... you've really improved your skills lately.
If really... I'd have to say something, I'd add/work a bit on SSS as I find parts of the face just a bit too opaque... I'd also add a bit more of wetness in eyes.

Keep on,

The ripper.

03 March 2005, 04:32 PM
really nice. i love the style you've achieved here. the eyes and look on the face are wonderful. exceptional stuff =)

03 March 2005, 04:59 PM
Wow how interesting it is----China's last emperor Pu Yi turned into 3d CG....and the graphic is made by an italian!!

Great job!

03 March 2005, 05:00 PM
Sure... there's the brow thing, but that's far overshadowed by the convincing nature of this image.

Incredible work in making this credible.

03 March 2005, 05:03 PM
nice nice work as usual thirdeye...definitely one of your best to date...
just exudes quality well done bud...keep it up.

03 March 2005, 05:11 PM
Incredible work, wow! Outstanding! Keep it up Alberto!

03 March 2005, 06:23 PM
wow man, damn cool work! the eyebrows maybe need a litle more work. but .. it's one of the best works with c4d, if ever seen!:bowdown::bowdown:

03 March 2005, 06:25 PM
first of all, great work. second of all, have these critics ever seen an asian person before??? it's like they are all trying to make him caucasian ("give him eyelashes! give him tearducts! don't make his eyes so squinty!"). as an asian, i know what we asians look like, and you hit the nail on the head. are they all blind? i could see his eyelashes just fine and they are just the right length.

i love the little bump on his lip and his serious, but relaxed demeanor. bravo to you for adding some character and diversity to the ever-increasing number of bland realistic CG out there.

the only thing i would change, even from the fixed image, is those eyebrows. they look like they have been burned and are now curly and singed. i would try to make them light (as in not thick) and very, very straight.

all in all, fantastic job!

03 March 2005, 06:33 PM
hey its from some chinese film u r foolig us.

awesome work man........................

just no words.....

03 March 2005, 06:38 PM

03 March 2005, 06:41 PM
Excellent work! It's so good, that if I didn't know it was a 3D model, I would think it was real! :applause:

Best regards,

03 March 2005, 07:26 PM
great job alberto !
i call it final :)=

03 March 2005, 07:27 PM

03 March 2005, 09:01 PM
Again, the eyebrows look a bit odd. But, this is truly amazing - Great photorealism. Well done!

03 March 2005, 09:12 PM
Strange - my post didn't show up.

Again - wonderful work - the yellow hue makes it even more alive.

03 March 2005, 10:20 PM
hey Alberto,
Its very, very good your work. Paint texture, modeling and render, congratulations.

03 March 2005, 10:24 PM
fantastic shader !!!

03 March 2005, 10:40 PM
real great shader...but the eyebrows look like they were only color and bump map?!

03 March 2005, 11:34 PM
eye brows look alitte wierd to me but awsome render.. i love the DOF... one of the nicer cinema renders ive seen

03 March 2005, 12:44 AM
Very good,I like.

03 March 2005, 12:50 AM
Incredible piece of work!!.. can't belief cinema4d can do such quality.., definately 5 stars

sadly many people are equally misinformed

03 March 2005, 01:17 AM
Great job u've done. Congratulations  Everybody said smth about eye brows and lips. I think u realised the mistakes too.
Anyway, i think u gave the impression u were after. He gazes impressively.
Keep good working

03 March 2005, 01:27 AM
Too good to be true...

03 March 2005, 04:14 PM
it looks cool man. great job...

the eyebrows are a little odd tho

03 March 2005, 05:02 PM

It caught my eye immediately and really stands out as a very fine piece of work.

Regards Scraggy

03 March 2005, 06:09 PM
euh... whah so realistic the only opart you have to work at are the eye browes anything else... damn nice

03 March 2005, 06:28 PM
great stuff alberto, very lovely shaders and lighting.

not much else to say :) just very very very nice

03 March 2005, 09:38 PM
Simply incredible! Really a captivating image... you have the expression down perfectly.

03 March 2005, 10:45 PM
I think the SSS effect is a little strong, appears to be glowing from within to me. The eyes look flat and the eyebrows have already been mentioned. Technically a very nice render.

04 April 2005, 12:24 PM
Nice job! Fantastic! Really well done!

04 April 2005, 02:03 PM
Fantastic work! The skin shader is beautiful.

04 April 2005, 03:17 PM

04 April 2005, 11:25 PM
Thanks for the link to your site.

Your work is Astonishing:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 11:28 PM
Fantastic job!!!

04 April 2005, 02:31 AM
Great piece... Thats all I want to say... but feel I can't as I generally write some kind of commentary on someones work. Those people who only write a couple of words or so, really get on my nerves.

There is something around the young chaps eyes that I'm not sure of, but am too tired currently to figure out what it is thats bugging me... Its probably my eyes so ignore this fatigued idiot.

Keep this stuff coming,

Respectfully. :)

04 April 2005, 07:50 PM
great stuff!! I think eyebrows looks good instead, very expressive pic! lighting and render are awesome! very bravo!!

04 April 2005, 11:29 PM
Nicely done.
Props to you, man.
Hey, and some tribute to the Chinese culture?
Why not?

04 April 2005, 01:49 PM's great.

04 April 2005, 07:50 PM
Very good modelisation.....

04 April 2005, 09:10 PM
absolutly amasing:buttrock:

04 April 2005, 09:32 AM
Congratulations Alberto!
Truely a masterpiece.
I am proud that Translucent Pro is a part of this (even if just from a technical point of view) :scream:

04 April 2005, 10:27 AM
Congratulations Alberto!
Truely a masterpiece.
I am proud that Translucent Pro is a part of this (even if just from a technical point of view) :scream:

Hehe your plugin definitely helped me a lot Arndt, i always recommend it. The next one will use your newest plugin, Vreel Skin, for sure, i'm already loving it! :)

04 April 2005, 10:32 AM
Very realistic eyes ! A lot of cg characters have 'dead' eyes. Congrats on achieving the look.

04 April 2005, 10:37 AM
Hehe your plugin definitely helped me a lot Arndt, i always recommend it. The next one will use your newest plugin, Vreel Skin, for sure, i'm already loving it! :)

Thanks again.
Unfortunately Vreel Skin came a little too late for this project, but hopefully you'll find it a usefull tool while working on the next masterpiece
Please let me know if your work includes weighting, as I have something new in my sleeve for such work. :)

04 April 2005, 10:51 AM
(un)luckily it doesn't ;)

04 April 2005, 11:01 AM
great techinque and really great feeling

04 April 2005, 11:28 AM
a tragic monarch...

04 April 2005, 01:56 PM
I have one crit about the image. The eyebrow could use some more work. Right now it looks odd and not realistic at all. It looks more like dirt scattered or sprayed on her eyebrows.

04 April 2005, 05:29 PM
It is wonderful !

There was only something on the eyes bugging me, maybe abscence of small vascularization, you know, small vessels. Maybe it makes a lil difference.
But I have hundreds of Bertolucci's Pu Yi references, I have checked some of them in high res and your work fits great really !!!
If I were Bertollucci and I needed a CG artist to make a CG Pu Yi for a remake of this movie... well... then this guy would be you!

04 April 2005, 12:44 PM
It's amazing! great work man!

04 April 2005, 07:11 AM
WOW !!!
fantastic, realistic great image !!!

04 April 2005, 05:37 AM
hes looking at me !

04 April 2005, 02:41 AM
Oh man, thats really inspiring. great work!

04 April 2005, 12:08 PM
China ,she was a great country!

04 April 2005, 07:42 AM
excellent work:thumbsup: always

ps...impressive wireframe :)

Ottima la scelta del soggetto e i colori, immagine ad alto impatto:)

04 April 2005, 12:45 PM
Very familiar and warm face,I like it.

04 April 2005, 01:07 PM
excellent ! cap is important in china at that time,so i think it will be better if with more details.

04 April 2005, 06:12 AM
had to go back and look at the eyebrows! but l thought the right ear looked a little detached or far away at first glance, good job, looks great<img>

04 April 2005, 11:58 PM
wow so many replies, thanks a lot to everyone! But let me reply to everyone:

Leigh, Jarrede, Wedge: thx a lot, agreed about the eyebrows, i sharpened them so much they're actually too sharp now, i'll blur them back a bit

I think it's not so much the sharpness as the hair itself that makes is look off. (If I judged your render correctly.) Do you have a closeup of an asian child's eyebrows? I've got a hunch that they contain fewer but slightly longer hairs. I also believe that the whole eyebrow is slightly more narrow.

04 April 2005, 12:20 AM

Very nice rending!!!

***wonderful head model*texture*lighting progress. ***very well:)

The colour tune of the render looks really fitting to the setting, and model is well done with out a doubt. The only thing I kind of notice quickly is the eye shape....they seem slightly unnatural to me. I am talking about the outline of the eye, not the detail of the eye. Still, very well done human close-up shot.

Absolutely awesome!

Pi Yi, the last emperor of China!
Like your job!

My skill set is not yet at this level, but a few comments on this admirable work. Color and comp seems to be dead on. Agree with other comments on eyebrows and perhaps the depth of creases around cheek/lips junction. The cap strap on the right hand side of the image appears to me to be too symetrical - just doesn't look natural. I wish I could do this level of work... enjoyed the image. I must work toward this level. Thanks for the image and inspiration.

Great work!
Excellent skin and cloth texture..............
But the face is not a 100% orient characteristic.....especially the eyes as well as the nose
I am living in China so I know that well.....
The following links are showing how are the original facial features going:

Hi, man! This is the kind of stuff I would like to do in 3d some day. Congratulations!

I wonder if you could share the translucency settings you used for the skin both in Chanlum and in Translucent pro. I have so far been unable to get a skin as realistic as yours.

Nice job! The Last Emperor goes down as one of the greatest artistic cinematic accomplishments of all time, great choice in subject and what a great eye for detail.

Wow, man! It's unbelievably real! How did you manage? Respect!!!

I tried a lot to make a photo real model of my friend (chinese too), but the skin looks waxy, eyes are like made from glass, the face lacks the feeling of live human being, etc.

OH, please help me! I would be so greatful to you :)

I would love to see your tutorial, can I hope you'll provide this one?
