As a complete Newbie to challenges, I am hoping to do everything right here. This idea is that of a decadent old baron, who after some (ahem) problems with his former maid ( after which she walked out on him) he ordered one of these new easy to operate \"Robomaids\" from the internet. Now after succsessfully having activated her, he is eagerly watching, if she will perform as good he hopes.

Nice sketch!
Yes, I would like to order one, too---

03 March 2005, 07:54 PM
Good idea. Clever and funny. Sexy robot, dirty old man. Great!

03 March 2005, 07:57 PM
great idea, waiting for some models:)

Another idea of mine: a princess has to be of service to a dragon by sweeping the remains of her latest would-be-rescuer together.

And still another idea of mine: A young japanese schoolgirl is \\\"walked\\\" home by her ..uh.. \\\"butler\\\" through the pouring rain in London, where she is studying at a school for rich kids.
In the backgrund Big Ben is ringing.

Not bad at all I like the image-- but wouldnt she be wearing a british school uniform in England?

03 March 2005, 01:09 AM
Wow! Really wow, jake rupert !
That last scetch is really awesome, outstanding, bright impression:scream:
Remids me "My neighbour Totoro" by Ghibli studio! (bzw also japanaise
I like it really in all aspects (well, in all - maybe hard to say cause characters are still not defined with details...). Color palette also rocks!
But as for me I'd change BigBan to just some other tower to give an impression of some little old english town. Anyway, athmophere of some huge surrounding also fit great!
Can't wait to see your characters for this idea - hope you accept this one (well, maybe you'll give a life to a new one - let's see)

Well, since I mean to have read, that many of the japanese official rules from the new Meji-aera were born from british ( see left hand traffic, schoolsystem ) or prussian organisation (some civil-legislation),
I guess the schooluniforms in both countries should be very similar. I believe, most of them derive from sailor-uniforms, at least these look best and more important: the most manga!

This is my first try on the old baron from the baron and robomaid-picture.
What do you think?

04 April 2005, 05:18 PM
looking good---
the old fellow is in good shape, it seems--
on the other hand, he lacks important parts-- no wonder he ordered a Robomaid--

Olli :scream:

Your old baron looks great - good stylisation, man! Very aristocratic look!
Go on with cool concept!

04 April 2005, 12:00 PM
really funny character--
this will be fun to watch--
you might want to check the size of the hands, its a matter of taste but I would make them bigger, so taht it fits the exegerated style of the nose/head.

you know funnily enough I actually quite like them small myself, sorry Olli  :D might even distract from the nose if they were bigger, as it is now that nose really stands out but also seems to fit

04 April 2005, 01:52 AM
yeah-- some like `em small! :scream:

04 April 2005, 02:03 AM

Great concepts, all of them very good but my favourite is the one with dirty old baron. Modeling is coming on real sweet - I think this can become something really good. Looking forward to see more

Hi jake rupert,
Glad you go on with your work.
Listen, guess it's better to change a bit shape of mustage - too linear at the bottom (as for me it is supposed to be thinner under nose). Also some curved shape would be not bad.

04 April 2005, 04:20 PM (

Just started with a few props for the scene.

Hey thx for the advise, in the right shoulder there is a skull coming out. But I gonna removed it because its not really visible and it looks stupid... Greets

Updated the set with a bookshelf and some more props....

Nice work :) I'd like to see the robomaid, with a sly look on the side of her face, accidentally pouring tea into the old rake's lap.

04 April 2005, 04:09 PM
hi jake,

i like the first subject most. that one with the lewd old man, starring on the boobs of robotmaid. your succed in modelling is still obvious. i can understand the complaints about the absence of some "details" of the old man, but maybe they are a little bit shrinked. consider, he´s an old man. ;)
perhaps his lips should be more thin. now they look like lips of a much younger man. in the finishing birng more details in his wonderfull standing beard.
i had to grin a little about his phalus nose. nice ambigously!

good work, proceed. :)

04 April 2005, 04:13 PM
hi jake,
your robomaid has legs to bite on. would a little be hard for my teeth. *g

04 April 2005, 06:32 AM
The tail-hose is too damn funny.:)

jake rupert
04 April 2005, 10:14 AM (

04 April 2005, 02:00 PM
Wow--did not look for quite some time and-- a whole funny world-- nice consistent style!

04 April 2005, 02:08 PM
Nice work sir  Love the bear. I think maybe the chair should be facing the fire though. A fire would help with the lighting as well perhaps. :applause:

04 April 2005, 12:10 AM
Hi jake rupert!
Awesome servant - very good-lookin' with her reflective metal
Good detailed castlehall as well

04 April 2005, 03:44 AM
Hey jake rupert! Very nice cartoon atmosphere! Well done scene and very detailed too! I can imagine that a wonderful piece is coming!:) Keep it up friend:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 07:30 AM

and that vacuum cleaner tail is hilarious

Hi Jost,

best wishes and good luck for the challenge :) Very funny ideas!

I tried to use some textures and lighting for the first time to achieve a certain style. Here is the result for now.
Many things are still bothering me though:

-The lightbulb in the standlamp next to the comfychair doesnt seem to work correctly. I made the bulb and the cover transparent but the light is not showing enough still.

- the texturemap for the wall are tiled and double applied for bump and colormap.
I am not sure , if they show correctly and are properly aligned positioned.

-the oak material for the wood works quiet nice, scaled down to 1 % except for the backwall of the big bookcase , where they seem to big scaled somehow.

I will be struggeling some more.

working on light and composition

05 May 2005, 05:58 PM
just a quick comment... I think your original sketch is better composed than the latest pic you posted. Keep the focus on the characters, what they are doing, otherwise your viewer's eyes will "wonder off" to the items around the room.

05 May 2005, 07:51 PM
I agree, the original composition is much better--
otherwise: great work, nice style, it is taking shape !
What about some fluffy fur for the bear?

jake rupert
05 May 2005, 12:59 PM (

Fell into the simple beginners-mistake, that I wanted to show off everything I had modeled so caringly....
I hope , this is much better now?!.
Have to finalize posing and lighting

How do you folks like the pose of the Robomaid?

;>) Jake

05 May 2005, 04:43 PM

looking really good--
a couple of tweaks with lights (upper left could be darker) and maybe a bit less noise/bump on the column and you are there.

Great illustrates feeling to it.

a couple of tweaks with lights (upper left could be darker) and maybe a bit less noise/bump on the column and you are there.

was pretty much what I was thinking too.

looking cool otherwise though :D

jake rupert
05 May 2005, 09:10 PM (

and this is our good old baron posing for us now.............

05 May 2005, 09:28 PM
wow, that is one cool scene! great work!

05 May 2005, 08:22 AM
the barons pose is not on the spot yet:
check your original concept-
make his legs put on the feet-thing, turn his head either so tat he looks up from the book like in your sketch or make him look the servant in the face & smile instead of looking at the cup .Make him more of someone being used to being served.

Your original sketch portrayed that quite well.

05 May 2005, 10:28 AM
Great image Jake, it's coming together well. I love the style of your characters.

jake rupert
05 May 2005, 03:16 PM (

Getting close to the final......
or does anybody have suggestions left, I should incorporate.....

05 May 2005, 05:03 PM
It's coming along nicely, much better now that poses are set, and with textures and lighting :)
Kinda inspires me to take part in the next challenge as well.

05 May 2005, 10:45 PM
it´s getting very nice. some faults i discover. first, the lightning of the standalone-lamb is not realy right. it has to go out mainly by the top and the bottom. second, there´s no shadow from the grizzly on the ground. the servant i love, perhaps i order one for me. ;)

so long,

Guess, its not geting any better now...
Should have stopped five steps earlier.
Don`t know, if I will be able to restore that yet.
The danger is to fumble this thing dead. Hoorah to the deadline.

Hi Jost!
ok, I see you're arrived to finish! Great feeling, isn't it :)
And you've got well done image!
Actually I'd make shadows almost complete black and darker those "overexposed" ares near fire, but it's all suggestions for future - your image look cool as it now!
See ya during voting!
