Latest Update: Coloring WIP: Colour steps 3
An overdue update finally! I've been working on whatever took my fancy, an arm here, a leopard there... it's getting there, but I think I'll have to drop that second cat to get it done in time. I guess it was kind of superfluous to requirements anyhow, the seeress would only need one guide cat really! So I'll have to repaint the foreground to recreate that frame the second cat provided to the demon. Still have the demon's lower torso, the bottom of the dress and tightening up the staff to finish, then obviously the background and tweaking lighting effects. So... not much then... *sweatdrop*
03 March 2005, 06:02 PM
oops.. double post, apologies
03 March 2005, 06:04 PM
Just my initial thumbnails, about an inch or so big, to try and decipher ideas, and shapes and composition. There were three main ideas that sprang to mind, one involving a spider-like beast, one involving a demon behemoth beast and one involving a more human undead vampire cowboy. All were to be masters, with women as their servants/slaves.
03 March 2005, 06:19 PM
I can't sketch propery with a wacom to save my life, so all my concepts will be done tradtionally with a pencil.
My thoughts on this concept were that the woman would be a queen, a strong personality, someone you wouldn't expect to be dominated. I wanted the relationship to be more than just a physical submissive and dominant though, as mentally, such relationships require a great deal of trust and love, if it's not done through cruelty. So that's what I'm trying to put across here., something more touching, like they are dedicated to one another.
03 March 2005, 06:30 PM
An expansion of another idea. Excuse any sloppy anatomy at the moment, not to mention the lack of definition in the shading. Trying for a different feel to the last one, something slightly more menacing, the idea being the spider beasty thing keeps the woman as slaves, wrapped in silk until he fancies playing with them, at which point he unravels them. I really can't decide which of these two ideas I like best, I might try combining elements of both perhaps. Any comments, crtis etc would be muchly, muchly appreciated.
03 March 2005, 06:38 PM
The second is potentially stronger... I'm not too excited by the spider beast... Maybe make a man more spider like or a spider more man like but doing the "centaur" thing never really seams to work IMHO. I like the work so far...
03 March 2005, 06:45 PM
Thanks HammaJamma, I'm kind of the same thought, I had wondered whether to just have the spider legs as the main limbs, do away with the human bit. Either that or make the human bit much more insectoid maybe...
03 March 2005, 06:48 PM
noooo don't eat her head!!!
lol great work!
03 March 2005, 06:49 PM
I would try all the above and play with it. Try merging both creatures in your mind and draw what comes to you. Could be a really creepy looking creature that's for sure.
03 March 2005, 06:57 PM
Oh my, NOOB! That really made me giggle. I shall be changing the angle of her head and his then... *grin*
HammaJamma: I will, my thanks.
03 March 2005, 07:20 PM
A detail of the woman's face from demon concept. I figure facial expressions will be crucial in depicting their relationship, as well as body language.
03 March 2005, 07:23 PM
excellent drawing skill.
i thought that finger was a huge d**k at first.....
and by d**k i meant duck....i mean what else cud it look like ?? :D
03 March 2005, 07:24 PM
A more in depth sketch of faces of the Spider's Lair image. Trying to decide whether to have the obvious emotion be fear, or loving submissiveness.
03 March 2005, 07:27 PM
NOOB!: *snort* of course... first thing that came to my mind was desk.
03 March 2005, 07:31 PM
now that i see it up close, the head seems too small for the body.
ofcourse...that would make it easier for the spider to digest, but that doesn't work well for a drawing.
but ur drawin skill still amazes me.
03 March 2005, 08:54 AM
GOod start dude. Very nice sketch and i like that concept of the spider and the female.
Keep it up. Can't wait to see some colouring wip.
03 March 2005, 05:37 PM
Really good sketches you have there. I like the characters from your first sketch better, but I like the concept of the second sketch better than that of the first. Perhaps if you could combine the "beast" figure from the first sketch with the spider creature from the second one somehow... Concerning the second sketch, try changing the girl's pose. The horseback riding position she is in doesn't seem to work for me. It suggests power in her, which is something that you may not want based on your description of the concept. In any case, I really enjoy your work and am looking forward to seeing it in the coloring stages.
03 March 2005, 05:47 PM
i like the previous image where it was zoomed out a bit....showed lot of action than the closeup shot....but thats just me...nice sketches
03 March 2005, 06:22 PM
c'mon we want mooooooooooooore!
03 March 2005, 06:28 PM
Thanks guys! All useful info!
Arc80: Thank you! Colour is a bit off yet, I like to finish everything in black and white, but my fingers are itching to get hold of that wacom...
TMArtist: Thank you for your thoughts. I'm still trying to iron out concept, and I love drawing demons, so I may well find some way of building them both together. And the girl I wanted to look like she's struggling, as I'd considered having some other spidery guys in the background with more compliant slaves. But that may change as I doodle more.
Sandsekh: the close up ones are more details of the larger scenes, for me to concentrate on expressions, which are the most important thing in a drawing to me.
NOOB!: impatience, impatience... all good things... *grin*
03 March 2005, 06:32 PM
Trying to iron out the design of the spider. Got rid of the man parts and made him much more insectoid. The symbols are an idea I\'m trying to flesh out, that there will be more than one spider, each one with a slave marked with the same symbols. Think of it as the spider slave dungeon with a Tronesque feel, if I can pul it off!
03 March 2005, 06:35 PM
I like this spider concept a lot. The head on this guy is sweet! Definitely a lot of potential in this one. Are these pencil sketches or are you using a wacom?
03 March 2005, 06:39 PM
Thanks Mr Frederickson, I can't sketch with a wacom to save my life, not to mention the fact my machine is over three years old and slow as hell, so most of my concept work is in good old fashioned pencil.
03 March 2005, 06:47 PM
03 March 2005, 06:51 PM
I like the concept very, very much... An idea why dont you add those DEMON BIG SCIMPITY-DAMPTITY HORNS on this spider dude. It'll make him more diabolic and sinister thou it wont go much into the demonic waters... Anyhow I think we may see you very, again very close into the finals (if there is such thing) :)
03 March 2005, 06:55 PM
hehe, I wasn't sure. I was gonna say...if you can sketch like that with a wacom! Dang! But yeah, you can't beat the old pencil.
03 March 2005, 06:57 PM
NOOB! Glad you like!
THE Wizard: I like that idea... a kind of demonic looking spider... and pssht *blush* I'll be happy simply to finish the image.
R Frederickson: yeah, if only I could sketch like that with a wacom...
03 March 2005, 07:10 PM
I like your 3rd sketch, the demon and servant one...what I like about it so much is how you posed your characters...Cant wait to see your coloring style now.
03 March 2005, 07:46 PM
man, your drawing is really good!
I have no critics to make right now, I`ll expect more sketches of the characters :)
I liked the mark of the girl`s eyes on the close up
keep walking! :P
03 March 2005, 08:25 PM
Love your sketches - very intriguing - keep up the work!
03 March 2005, 09:27 PM
A very nice fantasy and a great skill you have.
At first i thought I liked your second sketch better, but after looking a little longer at the pics I think the motive is too generic compared to the spider motive.
It has great movement and tells a story-- will enjoy to follow your progress, great work--
04 April 2005, 01:30 AM
Fantastic execution and ideas
04 April 2005, 01:36 AM
The spider is awasome man! Maybe try some deep and dramatic lights on this composition!! Yeah, i know that you're just sketching yet, but thi drawning with colors will rule!!!
04 April 2005, 06:15 AM
Ewww - icky spiders!
Nice idea and powerful image - is the spider gonna have muscly arms like on the sketch you did? Im not too keen on the idea myself. The more spidery the better - arms would lessen the arachnaphobia you get with this image.
Keep it up - ill be keepin an eye on this one.
04 April 2005, 02:59 PM
Many thanks you guys!
CoreyArtE: Was that the sketch of the demon with the big horns and woman? I'm confusing myself... and my colouring is where I really have to work, considering I've only really been into digital art for about 8 months or so.
Don Diego: Thank you! I will!
Olli:Thank you.. those were exactly my thoughts, I really love the demon sketch, and will probably do that eventually anyway, but the spider is more original and has more scope.
Louis J.: Many thanks!
Smash.rs: I'm going t make my lighting as dramatic as i can, lots of darks and lights, reflected lights and general glowiness, if I can!
Andy H: Spiders.. *shudder* I hate spiders, so looking for reference leaves me feeling vaguely nauseous. And I've definitely ditched the man body, going with insectoid all over. My thanks for the input!
04 April 2005, 03:22 PM
thats some really freakin awsome way to live out arachnophobias! I liked the first concept as well, the emotional part of it wich left it open who's really the master now.
Spiderman here is quiet a nightmare of a being, i like the head of him a lot, also the girl the closeup show much pain and fear great expressions! My thought is, is "being food" a relationship of service... hope you get the meaning of this. lol. despite my bad english...
Looking at your image, there pops up a little substory in my brain "He's mutating into a huge maneating spider, and she fears him a lot but still loves the man he onece was, so thats why she returns to him daily and brings him some victims, following her cuz of her beauty by free will"... lol, just me and my silly fantasy...
Keep it up Sam, looking forward to your progress :) best luck and wish you loadsa fun!
04 April 2005, 03:24 PM
Let me congratulate you on your tight skills! Really nice sketches you've got!
waiting fro your next steps...
04 April 2005, 03:27 PM
Angel: Thanks very much... I love that version of the story, guess it shows my pessimistic nature to say I'd have never thought of anything as sweet as that! Good luck to you too, I plan on having lots of fun!
Adamos: Hi there! Next steps comig soon hopefully!
04 April 2005, 04:01 PM
Okay, after a discussion with a few people at work, took on board some good points. Still not 100% convinced, but I think this tells more of a story. The idea behind this scene is that the women are some kind of slaves, each one assigned to a specific arachnid master, they are controlled via their slave collars and are bred either for gladiatorial fighting or war. The woman reisisting in the pic is doing so because her collar has come loose (though you can't tell all that well on this smaller version).
I like the main spider, and the figures on the right, still need to iron out the background.
04 April 2005, 04:11 PM
guess it shows my pessimistic nature to say I'd have never thought of anything as sweet as that! hahaha, ... never mind, your worx rock!
kewl update! hehe, this vision couldn't be much daker... :P one collar to rule them all and bind them in a spiderweb ;) very scary:
keep it up Sam great new sketch:thumbsup:  !
04 April 2005, 04:23 PM
Ooo, definately NOT a willing servant! *applaudes* And this new composition is really REALLY fab, but I felt her desperation more when she and the spider took up more of the frame, so I would suggest moving in a tad closer to them. Not enough to destablish the background; just enough to put the focus solidly on them.
04 April 2005, 10:15 PM
Nice drawing by the way.
I believe there's a fight for attention with what you have creeping in on the right, it's competing too much.
To be honest, I don't believe you need it. With the main action going on, they illustrate everything about the concept (the action that's half in the shot from the right is redundant as far as the storytelling goes, and therefore would save any headaches you have with any compositional issues.)
The action in the background is great, and it adds scale to the whole concept and world you've created.............which is great. Like someone mentioned earlier, just go closer in.
I may be way off, if so, ignore my observation..........just a thought i had while enjoying your pic.
Keep it up
04 April 2005, 10:18 PM
04 April 2005, 10:27 PM
I 2nd that
04 April 2005, 11:34 PM
I like your drawings, and the spider theme sounds good... i'll track your progress
04 April 2005, 11:43 PM
Great sketches:thumbsup: We do seem to loose some of the struggle between the characters because the action is in the deep middle-ground though. Love your drawings
04 April 2005, 12:16 AM
Hi again guys, all this feedback is incredibly helpful!
Sacha: Thanks again, I figured I might as well go out and out on the arachnophobia...
Imriela: thank you.. I think you might be right, though I'm fiddling with lighting to what works and what doesn't.
Paul: your input is greatly, greatly appreciated. I've been trying new compositions, nothing has really grabbed me as of yet, but I'm tenacious if nothing else. I'd like the action to be closer in as I'm better on detail, to be truthful.
NOOB!: thank you again!
LORDvesalius: Thanks! I hope you enjoy whats to come
Sideache: a pleasure to have you comment, your own work is amazing. Working on the distance issue currently...
04 April 2005, 12:31 AM
Testing out the lighting of the last concept sketch. I kind of liked the figures on the right, as they made it more obvious that each girl was linked to her particular spider, but as pointed out, it was fighting the main spider for attention. Tried to resolve that by really making the lighting harsh on the central spider figure, and almost bending the right hand figures off. Still not sure though, it feels like too may elements, not very well connected. Sort of happy with the light on the spider.
04 April 2005, 12:40 AM
The second of two lighting attempts, I reworked the idea, the composition and the setting. The cave thing just seemed a bit obvious, so I tried to flesh out an idea for a giant tron-like chess board with the corresponding symbols for each spider and its slave. Also moved the camera angle up a bit more. I need to give it a break for a day or so, and come back to it with fresh eyes.
04 April 2005, 01:00 AM
very interesting attemp Sam. an aditional idea could be a tattoo, on her body, with the symbol as well, sort of his mark.
a tronboard doesnt sound too logical for me, but i went trough a thought: future, intelligent spiders, natural, environment, human, slaves:aliens. how bout the inside of a huge biospherical spaceship, so you can bringtogether both, the technical and futuristic aspects as well as a natural environment for the monsterspideys.
Just a thought of mine.
keep it up Sam. Light looks very nice. (that nice volumetric light brought me to that idea...)
04 April 2005, 01:23 AM
Thanks Sacha... I should really explain my thought processes more I guess! When I eventually get to colouring, I'd envisioned the symbols to be bioluminescant, which is where the whole glowing coloured/tron thing came from, and I was trying to reinforce the idea of the spiders and their slave/servants being linked to one another, so the chessbord idea seemed like a logical (to my mind anyhow, but it IS 2am and I'm starved of sleep) progression from the whole gladitorial fighter arena, presuming that this is some advanced race of insects as you say. Buuut, I do like the idea of a spaceship, aside from the fact I've never drawn one before... I'll have to go scour the GSO entries for inspiration. Your thoughts are muchly appreciated.
04 April 2005, 03:22 AM
Yeah, Great use of value Sam. We won't have any problem indentifying them with that execution. Bravo
04 April 2005, 03:33 AM
wow mann u re gooooodd !!!
waiting to see more !!
c ya !
04 April 2005, 09:26 AM
Looking very cool.
04 April 2005, 10:52 AM

hahaha jus kiddin
s'aal gud great art!
04 April 2005, 11:41 AM
I HATE Arachnids!!!
anyway great amazing work man^^
You freakin rock! I love the last comp :)
the light/dark contrast must be well defined and I think the atmosphere is well rendered :)
I think you'll make somthin great ;)
04 April 2005, 01:55 PM
AWESOME!! Only minor crit I got is to watch her left hand, I spot a bad tangent there collapsing with one of the spiders legs. But that was the only spot I noticed after glaaring at this great piece of art! Thumbs up!
04 April 2005, 01:02 AM
so i see you've accepted a horn idea. good for u. Very likable picture- keep it up..
My master And Servant 2D (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=225858)
04 April 2005, 08:28 AM
wicked wicked spider! i'm looking forward to seeing this one done. i think the girl's pose and positioning is better on the sketch with the centaur-like spider, where she's more obviously straddling it, and her body is a little more stretched. the arms were a little weird on that one, but everything else was really great
04 April 2005, 08:18 PM
All advice noted, thanks muchly guys!
Sideache: thank you, I really want the spider and its victim to be the main focus of the piece
gra7: thank you!
NOOB!: Dammit, you always make me laugh.
Neozoom: Makes two of us! I'm definitely feeling more drawn to the second composition, less to distract you from the main characters. And thank you!
am7: I think I see what you mean, I'll try and separate the two a bit more. Thanks for the advice!
THE Wizard: I did, seemed like a good idea! Thank you.
monkeybeach: I think you may be right. Currently, I'm working with no anatomical reference, so I'll be able to sort the details once I've settled on the final composition. My thanks for your thoughts.
04 April 2005, 03:16 AM
Mhmmmmm, still no update *makes unpatient lil circles, taps with foot* *then jumps up feels like makin sum noise*
Go Sam, go Sam, go, Sam, go!
rockem all, Sam, let those lines grow!
bring it on, No we can't wait,
Update :bounce: Update :bounce: Update :bounce: Update :bounce:
hahaha, came to encourage you! come on, don't let us hang!
04 April 2005, 03:37 AM
wow looking good keep it up cant way to see it with color :D theres just that aura of hopelessness in the situation good stuff
04 April 2005, 03:52 AM
Great stuff here! Maybe the girl's leg...you could strecht out...I dont know, looks strange to me..the legs seems amputated..Just a sugestion
04 April 2005, 12:15 PM
Good concept, I love all your drawings! Looking forward to color!
04 April 2005, 09:02 PM
this thread is fun!! great idea with the spiders and the enslaved humans...:) the drawings are excellent too...
i agree with the1st_angel: the spaceship-idea is interesting... maybe the spider-aliens visited earth and took a few objects for in-depth study with them... :) i donīt know.. they can talk to them via telepathy and from time to time one of the poor humans gets some extra attention by one of the spiders.. horrible thought... keep it up! iīll keep an eye on this one
04 April 2005, 09:08 PM
Thanks for stopping by Mr Zepyhri, Heh! Excellent drawing skills on display here! And I looove the idea, even with those *shiver* creepy spiders! I think a central overhead lightsource will work well on this, giving the other spiders a faded off quality like you 've drawn here... :D Colour... whee!
04 April 2005, 09:11 PM
You guys are great, *gush gush gush*
Sacha: that really made me smile... *giggle* i have a personal art cheerleader! Should update any time now!
JakubfromOz: Thanks! Playing around with colou as we speak, should be able to put something up soon.
BloodTaster: I know what you mean, once I figure the exact posing, and start doing things in details, I'm hoping you'll be able to tell that her legs are bound as if she's knelt (almost hogtied in a sense). I just didn't want it to look like she was doing a bit of bare-backed spider riding if her legs were stretched out!
Jose Pardo: thank you.. colour coming any time now!
dunkelgold: I'm primarily a fantasy type, so sci fi is taking a bit of research, but I like the idea, so i'll probably go with it. Eventually I'll write a snippet of story to go with it explaining exactly whats going on, but I like hearing how people interpret it.
04 April 2005, 09:15 PM
Poshspice:*grin* thanks for the return call! This piece is making me tackle my fear of spiders, I usually faint just looking at pictures of them, so perhaps some good will come of it! And colour and dramatic lighting scare the pants off my usually, so I'm easing myself in bit by bit!
04 April 2005, 09:32 PM
Love that spider, reminds me of Rodney Matthews' stuff. Should look good in colour.
04 April 2005, 09:32 PM
This is the first time I've ever tackled really dramatic lighting without reference, but I figured I'd best see how the concept works in colour before I pin my flag to the mast so to speak. I'd always envisioned dark blues and purples for the background, but am still working on the final scenario, so that may change. Might try the spider in a darker colour to try and pull the girl out a bit more though, as her skin tones are lost against the white body.
04 April 2005, 09:34 PM
That was fast. And it does. :)
04 April 2005, 09:39 PM
Baron: thank you! I'm itching to get going on this, but still a few details to iron out. Coming from a wondrous talent as yourself, I'm humbled.
04 April 2005, 10:56 PM
Spider's Lair......I just think it's wonderful.....Love the color and mood, the style and whimsical appeal it invokes......Really nice, and well done sam.....I'll be watching for more...
04 April 2005, 11:13 PM
I like your concept. (your concept sketch was awesome)
Here are some thoughts:
I think the image needs more contrast....and the lightsource needs to be difined
more. Your idea to darken the body of the spider is good I think. Like a black widow
with red segments in it.
I also would like to see more spiderwebs in the background....
just a thought.
rock on buddy!
04 April 2005, 11:16 PM
nice, nice, nice, nice and nice!
04 April 2005, 11:56 PM
I think you're right. The spider needs darker colors. The pasty white and green isn't working for me. The girl looks a bit squat...small.... Her torso seems too short or something. Cool stuff.
04 April 2005, 01:50 AM
interesting concept u got here, i've gone through all ur sketches and its very nice.however,i prefer the pose of the gal in the 3rd piece spiderlair sketch.and its pretty interesting to have arms for the spider too.:)all and all u have some fine stuff going here.keep it up ~!i'll be back for morehttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif
04 April 2005, 01:53 AM
whoa... i hate spiders. nice job. you gave me chills hehehe
04 April 2005, 02:13 AM
You tackled out that very nice. and unexpected "sweet". I like the colorscheme a lot. The lightnigh just is very very nice, adds a lot for the scifi-feeling into it.
but in this soft n beautifull light, the scary spider almost looks... cute?
Something running trough my head now u could give a lil try could be a subtropical tough in different greens. just an idea, for making it some green hell. Or if blue, a bit less saturated allover a bit darker to get a bit of goth feeling into it. Dark and mystical. maybe just test this lil suggestion, levels, tone down midtones, desaturate a bit after it, and look. harder highlights and a darker allover should bring a bit of "bladerunner" or "crow"darkness into your spiderlair.
bout being a cheerleader... hahaha, uhm, feel a bit silly now. lol
oh, and don't get me wrong your update sure rocks! the lightnig looks fantastic. keep it coming Sam! go go go!:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
04 April 2005, 03:30 AM
what's up dude,
very nice update. The colours are working great and i like the signs on the spiders.
Just one suggestion for the composition, how about adding a foreground on the top left side of your image (maybe a spider webs in sillouhete or with rim lighting on the edges of the spider webs). It might help on the depth of the space of your piece and increase the attention to your main focal point.
ArchieMy master & servant entry (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=224331)
04 April 2005, 05:43 AM
hmmm...i like the spider with the human body more, but the colored one aint so bad, cool lighting, and goodlux!
04 April 2005, 07:36 AM
I love the way you've led the viewers eye around the picture. Man this makes me feel all funny inside.... I hate spiders *shiver* looks great!
04 April 2005, 11:26 AM
Damn, this place just gets better and better!
Virtuoso: thank you! I'm trying to get my head round this dramatic lighting business.
Goro: all valid points, thank you. The spider colour I'm not decided on, but I'm leaning more towards the black widow look, if only for the mental connection. And there will be spider webs pretty much all over the place in the final thing
THE Wizard: thank you!
R Frederickson: Her anatomy has been proved to be shockingly bad by colouring it up roughly. Her neck is way too long and her torso and legs a bit short. Will fix that on the next update I think
Michael: thank you! I prefer that one too I think, though I need to find some decent anatomical references as to how far the spine can be curved and muscles pulled.
Bobert: Hi! I love your piece, best of luck with that. And thanks for the kind words, I'm giving myself the creeps too.
Sacha: You know... I think you're right. Alot of the scariness will come in the details of course, but I think the colours are too saturated, makes the picture too happy and bouncy. I'm currently up and down with how happy I am with the picture over all. I wouldn't be surprised if I try a completely new angle...
Arc80: Another very valid point.. might add some kind of structural detail there, if I go with this.
eclipson: thank you.. not sure of the centaur look myself
Jezzarts: makes two of us!
04 April 2005, 03:27 PM
wow! nice colors! i love the lights and that purple-blue background!
but i agree with the1st_angel`s post: the spider looks a little bit too cute.. but thatīs my personal taste... maybe making the colors darker could increase the dramatic look? anyway : great pic! keep going! :)
04 April 2005, 07:09 AM
I like the colour scheme on the spider, it's got a quite icky feel to it... but perhaps it could be slightly darker... and yeah I agree with the comment about the girls torso. She needs 'stretching' out a little. I love the composition, it works very well and the eye is realaxed looking at the pic. Fab and groovy! :)
04 April 2005, 06:45 PM
great colours, and a very good, dramatic lighting..the spider gives me the creeps..
all in all.. great work! keep it up!
04 April 2005, 06:51 PM
cool stuff, the amount of skill in this contest, only on 2D side is mind boggling,
no challenge book less than thrice the size of the GSO book could hope to do this
event justice... phew
04 April 2005, 08:16 PM
finally had some time to check others people stuff,
I love the spider, maybe could be a little darker and more shiny
something wrong with the girl arms and torso,
04 April 2005, 09:27 PM
That's awesome man I had a really similar idea that I had thumbnailed only I had the girl totally wrapped in a webbing like prey and I had the torso of a man and face and body of a spider kinda like one of your versions and the spider-man was seducing her and she was liking it . Personally I like when you had the half man aspect to the spider it made the relationship seem more sexual rather then sinister . I liked it better when it had that emotion rather then " Oh god she's gonna get eaten " . I think if you look at Luis Royo stuff he has a lot of that womans in sexual poses with demons and obviously it works for him he's pretty famous for it . Anyways either way I think it'll look great !
04 April 2005, 10:37 PM
I like how your work is evolving.
i like the lighting, though it may be more dramatic. The scene is very dramatic in itself, and i like the design of the spider, and the woman. And maybe you can make hte best of it either using more climatic lighting or a diferent "camera" pont of view (who's viewing your scene...? it may be another of the slave women... or a saviour, or just an intruder lurking in the darkness, tring to kidnap and rape one of the girls, and each one will have a very different point of view of the scene -ie, camera angle-).
good work, keep drawing
04 April 2005, 12:08 PM
As much as I liked the potential for the spider idea, and though it was kind of original, I simply am not feeling for the characters, something that's crucil to me if a picture is to keep my interest. I was thinking of what would stand a good chance in the challenge, not what I enjoyed, which is silly. So, I went back to the drawing board and bounced some ideas about. I'm still really attached to the original demon beast I had in my first concept, so I may work him back in. But I needed a new angle on the female. So here is the snow queen-esque lady I've settled on. I love designing dresses, and I envisage a kind of white, pale grey gothic look to her. She's blind, a powerful seeress, which will create a certain dependancy on her master, which should give a emotion to the final piece, and a reason she allows herself to be a servant, and the relationship bewteen the two will be almost gentle.
04 April 2005, 12:25 PM
Great move, you're here to have fun. I like your new sketch she's super cool. I have a philosophy for this contest. Don't try to win, just finish it. Great work
04 April 2005, 12:38 PM
Okay, this is a really nice sketch. The idea of an ice queen is always cool.
BUT are you seriously going to change and not work on the piece that you had. WHY!!! That piece is looking so nice, especially the spider creature, but it's up to you of course. You have my support on whatever you decide. Just have fun
04 April 2005, 02:07 PM
Thanks for your thoughts and comments guys. To all those who made comments on my previous spider post, all relevant thoughts, and though I've decided to leave the spider concept for now (I really want to finish this, and I'll be going round in circles if I don't find something I truly feel), there are valid points I can carry onto whatever I decide to work on now.
Arlutik: Yeah, no need to get stressed over how well it'll do, what matters is I finish it, and I enjoy what I create, and I just wasn't feeling that pull with the spider.
Arc80: I know,I know. The spider has merit, but in such time constraints, I have to love the subject of a picture, and I'm archnophobic for a start! But there is merit in it, I need more time to finalise the idea though, which I don't have if I'm to actually finish! (*sarcasm*So I'll start again... which is much less time consuming... d'uh! )
04 April 2005, 02:52 PM
hi sam, nice new concept! i know what you mean.. if you donīt love the subject itīs going to be soulless.. anyway: i liked the old one too.. :)
iīm very curious about how this new one will look like, the start with the ice-queen is very beautiful.. and i like the background-story.. :) keep posting!
04 April 2005, 02:59 PM
Beautiful design of the costume my friend! I love the victorian influence you incorporated. I will keep track of your progress and see how everything evolves :)
04 April 2005, 04:44 PM
these are great concept sketches but better yet they are great concepts. this seeress uve come up with i think is a great character... i really hope ur 'feeling her' coz i would love to see where u can take this.
cannot wait for the drawing and ideas to develope... ill be here (subscribing)
04 April 2005, 05:49 PM
I just get through your thread, and personally, I prefer the scene you've drawn with the demon-beast and the wowan. There is more feeling and storytelling possibilities than a monster spider. So, I'm glad you've came back with this previous idea of your. Concerning originality, most known subject have been explored in books, movies or illustrations, so creating something totally original is quite difficult. It's the way you do it that will make the difference IMO. Such movies as Kill Bill, Hero or Sin City share the same subject (vengeance) but the threatment and all that turns around make them quite different. Well, all this to say that with your skill to draw and the last character you've done, any subject you'll take will end up excellent! :)
04 April 2005, 08:22 PM
Your sketches are awsome! I like the the snow queen very much, it's very 'vampiress' which is always a good thing.
I agree with your decision to move away from the spider concept and do what you feel is best. Mainly because your image will be far superior if you enjoy doing it and don't get sucked into a project that you wish you didn't go with half-way through. Also the spider... oooh I don't like big spiders with spindly legs... Ugh
Good luck, I hope you get what you want out of the challenge! :buttrock:
04 April 2005, 11:11 PM
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts!
Benita: thanks, and yes.. the spider thing, just wasn't me. This should be much better!
AirbORn: thank you! and yes, I suppose it is kind of victorian, mixed with a little gothic fetish!
tilite: Thanks! The concepts aren't necessarily anything new under the sun, but hopefully I can put a different twist on them. And thanks for the subscription!
Kraull: I couldn't agree with you more, and the more I worked on the spider, the more I kept looking wistfully at the demon. So I rethought it, and I've tried to come up with a slightly different spin on it, as it is like you say, same start, same end, just a different journey! And you're too kind! *blush*
M477: heh heh heh, I guess the arachnophobes will be happy I'm not doing ol' spidey! And all I want from this challenge is just that: to challenge myself. I think I'll enjoy it more this way.
04 April 2005, 01:51 AM
First, I'm very sorry it took me so long to check back. The new work fits well on your delights i think. Even thought i liked the spiders work a lot, the new story is very cool and the first glance of it looks very promissing. great drawing Sam!
Looking forward what you make out of this, keep it up!
04 April 2005, 02:20 PM
I like the spider demon!
lol, but the new idea is cool too!
How about the demon gently leading his blind servant. Now that is an unique servant-master relation.
04 April 2005, 09:06 PM
Hi Sam. Fab new concept and sketch of your Seeress. I'll be looking forward to seeing this progress. Good luck! Claireabella
04 April 2005, 11:57 PM
Damn fine line work and sketches brotha ! PUMP IT UPPPPP.....
04 April 2005, 01:46 AM
Your sketches are fantastic! As for concepts, I rather liked the last spider one... I thought it had ALOT of potential, but if YOU aren't into it then I'll look forward to what you come up with next. Beautiful sketch for your new concept... can't wait to see where this one goes.
I'll be checkin' back for updates for sure! Cheers!
04 April 2005, 11:27 PM
Man I was so down when I red that you'll change the spider concept... Oh well, I wish you luck with this new one, but the spider demon was too cool!
Oh what am I saying? you'll do just fine this one too!!
04 April 2005, 11:38 PM
i am really digging the new sketch!
great job mate.
04 April 2005, 06:42 PM
I really like your concept. A blind "see-er" (i cant spell that, sorry, but you know what I mean) She see things others can't, and we see things she cant. It may be cool to have her have a pet demon, make her the master, and the demon could be verey "guide-dog-esk". He protects her. I dunno. It would be a cool take on a see-and-eye dog.
Just thinking out loud.
Great drawings, I like the relationship between the demon and the chained lady. She can tell she dosen't mind the leash. It's like the bird who see the cage as protection, and not confinment. :)
04 April 2005, 09:49 PM
I'm like'n that costume quite a bit.
04 April 2005, 12:21 AM
Hey guys, thanks for the feedback! After the week from hell, I finally manage to get something else done for this challenge, and I should be able to get my teeth into it this coming week.
Sacha: its really not a problem m'dear... I appreciate your thought whenever you can give them.
Eterna2: wow.... you read my mind... that is exactly what I had envisioned. O.o
Clairabella: Hi! and thanks, this subject should take off a little more than the spider did.
pogonip: thank ya... I'll be pumpin' it anytime soon!
artjunkie: thanks... I think the spider was probably much more original than what I'll end up doing, but I simply wasn't feeling the characters, so I would probably not have finished it in time... at least this way I get to finish it and really enjoy it too. I will eventually do the spider concept, but when I have more time to fiddle with the drawing.
THE Wizard: aw, I'm sorry... promise I'll do the spider one anyway, as I really did like the idea, just couldn't get my head round the composition and theme. I hope you'll like this one as much anyhow!
Frak3: The demon will be in the pic, and perhaps at first glance it will look like the seer is the mistress, but a bit of closer analysis (and the text I'll have accompanying it) will reveal the relationship to actually be the other way round, which I kinda like. And yes, the fact someone can be bound like that and see it in a good light is something very personal to me, to see that kind of relationship as one of great mutual trust, rather than just something kinky. To be a kind of comfort, if you will.
Dissipation: Thanking you kindly... I imagine the kind of dress I'd make if I was seamstress, and draw it...
04 April 2005, 12:34 AM
I set myself a mini-challenge. To see if I could actually sketch with a wacom. And, as this result shows, I can, but my god it takes me ages. So back to the humble pencil after this. This is the first complete concept for my seeress idea, and I am feeling this much more than the spider.
Brief synopsis of what's going on in my head: A demon king rules over the frozen wastelands. A jealous and well-connected military general decides he wants the kingdom for himself and starts a revolution. The citizens of said icy wasteland over throw their ruler, who is forced to go on the run. General then settles into his new role, only to find the kingdom's only powerful seeress has fled with the previous king. Without the foreknowledge she brings, his rule will not last long, so he commands his army to find and slay the ex demon king, and bring the seeress back alive. Unbeknown to the general, the seeress has become fond and very much dependent on her lord demon, who treated her far more kindly and with much mre respect than any of her previous lords had done, for he is very fond of her too. And so they flee across the ice, when suddenly her Sight takes over, warning her of an ambush set on the other side of the ice caves, while an army of demons bays for blood at their back.
Phew! Dramatic or what! I'm almost happy with this as it is, I just need to refine the details and work out the lines of the compostion. Once that's done, I might do a test for lighting (I'm considering two different light sources), then it'll be onto the colour with a vengence!
04 April 2005, 01:06 AM
to bad for the spider cause was pretty cool.
the new monster is bad , girl is little off I think, I mean her face
04 April 2005, 01:25 AM
I'll miss the spider concept......but this will be another nice one to follow Sam.....It's good to go with what you feel inside.....make a change, even if it's a dramatic one....
I like this new concept as well.....got some real nice character designs and a real nice start already.....The scene has lots of drama all set to go............I'll be watching as you progress......:arteest:
04 April 2005, 01:31 AM
Korline: It seems ol' spidey was quite popular! I'll get round to doing him one of these days. And thanks! Can you say exactly what is off with the face? Or is it just generally?
Virtuoso: that's weird... I was commenting on your own 3d entry probably exactly as you were commenting on mine... the mind boggles. And the spider just wasn't me as it was, and I'm no good at finishing stuff I can't relate to. But I'm glad to hear you think this one shows some merit too.
04 April 2005, 01:34 AM
Yes I just noticed......Our minds are linked.....;) .......I'll be looking in for more sam....I ams ure when you upload your next update my mind will send me that message right away.....See you then.....;) :arteest:
04 April 2005, 11:12 AM
what's up dude,
THat's a nice sketch you have there and the concept for the story is cool. The creature looks awesome, but i miss the spider  "I guess the rain did came and wash the spider out", heehee. Maybe you can finish that and post it in the regular forum (if you have time of course and it's up to you). As long as you're having fun with it, then it's coool. i'll wait for more updates.
04 April 2005, 11:53 AM
very nice sketch even if its made with pen tablet.its very clean. i myself am trying to do a pencil work with my own tablet, but, you're right it is taking ages...anyway ireally like your style of drawing..i personally liked the sketch you sent before, i dont know, i guess i liked the composition.. keep it comin':D
04 April 2005, 12:12 PM
I've been away from this thread for a while, come back and it's all changed! I really like the new one though; despite being fond of the spider one! The dress is cool! Perhaps open the composition a little more to see the entire staff of the creature. Feels a little cramped at the moment, but as far as drawing with a Wacom, you've got nothing to worry about. Excellent! :D
04 April 2005, 12:15 PM
so i guess the spider choked on her head then??
s'all good, she was able to re-generate another head and get captured by yet another master.
04 April 2005, 08:15 AM
as noob said......... coolness
great work when can we see some colour
04 April 2005, 11:35 PM
can't get over that spider
what I ment is, on the other sketches the face seem more feminine
on this if you cover her hair it would be hard to tell, unless that's intentional
I'm thinking that the lips are to muscular,
question, is she sitting?
monster is awesome, got this sick expression,
want to see some color
04 April 2005, 10:45 AM
Where is the spider concept? I liked it better I guess...This one is too flat imo
still a great sketch but the spider was more dynamic.
Hmm but when I think about the topic this one would fit better in it.
Anyways keep it up!
04 April 2005, 01:12 PM
Thanks for your input guys... the spider was more popular it seems... :( Ah well, I have to go with my gut instincts. I'll do the spider eventually... maybe he'll be implemented in the next challenge!
Arc80: I intend to do ol spidey at some point, if only cause I went out and bought a spider book for reference!
calisto: thanks! Sketching fluid lines with a wacom is exceptionally difficult, but it's great to be able to just experiment. I'm working on the composition of this idea right now, trying to build some structure, now I'm happy with the characters.
Poshspice: yeah, spider seems to be missed all round... who'd have thought? I've taken your suggestion on board and widened the composition and added a little to the top, which seems to work, so thank you.
NOOB: You really need to stop making me laugh in the middle of a quiet office when I'm trying to work...
Korline: yes, I see what you mean now, I'll work on softening her face a bit, though most of that will be done in colour. She's not sitting, no, but she supposed to be twisting round a bit, and the front of her dress comes down a way which could make it look like that. Glad you like the beastie though! Colour coming as soon as I nail the composition.
Goro: I just couldn't get my head round the theme in that picture, so decided to revert to my original concept but with an icy twist. Working on the depth and composition right now, as I realised the same thing after leaving the pic for a day or two and coming back to it.
04 April 2005, 06:16 PM
Your characters are stunning. Love the expression on the girl. can't wait to see an update.
04 April 2005, 07:32 PM
he looks so gentle, so caring.. i like your composition, but i liked the one with the beast lifting her head better. she looked confident, and he was mighty! but i like this one also, i really couldnt tell which one is really better, they both have specific emotions envolved. keep up!:)
04 April 2005, 07:48 PM
NOOB: You really need to stop making me laugh in the middle of a quiet office when I'm trying to work...
lol.u shud be working in the office ,not browsing master and servant cg challenge threads.
don't blameth me.!
04 April 2005, 10:47 PM
Birdybear: thank you! Update coming any minute now!
Calisto: yeah, I know what you mean, and for that picture, her looking up was better, though I still really like how he came out... I might splice the two together and see how it works.
NOOB: Nu uh, I hold you entirely repsonsible. :p
04 April 2005, 11:12 PM
Okay, having taken on board comments made, I went back to my wacom to play around with compostion, before I draw the final thing out by hand.
The previous sketch lacked depth, or any real sense of composition, so I looked at ice formations and caves for a bit, and tried to think of a suitable background. having played with the lines for a bit, I decided it was lacking a foreground element, so now we have snowleopards! Its more of a challenge, with more to complete, but I think it helps the depth, and they conform to the master/servant role, as the seeress' guides.
Thoughts and comments welcome.
04 April 2005, 11:39 PM
i aprove. :P j/k this new concept is wicked... would definatly be something to persue.
04 April 2005, 12:28 AM
Nice update. ... about ice and cavels, brings me to an idea: How bout an icecave, and some sabre tooth tigers, loadsa fur, on clotes as decors...
I like the new composition a lot. it actually is a bit left bottomheavy, maybe close up the tigercats a bit more to the mainactors, so they are smaller in scale. maybe work on a huge bridge-/stairs-system (a bit like moria a huge hall, but made of ice) so the seers trust in her big pet gets much more weight... just an idea of course.
Love your new direction Sam! keep on going!
04 April 2005, 11:49 AM
Slav: well then, that settles it... I have the Slav stamp of approval! *grin* and if I dont persue this, I'll never finish in time!
Sacha: Thanks m'dear.. all great ideas, and the idea of having a icy version of moria really appeals, if I can pull it off! And I'll make the leopards a bit smaller, bring the two elements together more, and perhaps make the top of the staff more impressive to balance it out.
04 April 2005, 05:52 PM
You ve come up with a lot of very nice concepts - choose one :D they are all cool!
04 April 2005, 09:46 PM
Looking real nice...this last one is even better than the last....I would go with this sam....really deep and lots of eye candy to look upon...a nice concept, and I hope to see this get more attention all the way to the finish.......Good luck sam......
04 April 2005, 03:09 PM
draw a leopard eating the spider from the earlier concept lol.
this looks great!
04 April 2005, 06:28 PM
hiya Zepyhri! i love your caveish backgroun i feel itll have a nice atmosphere.i love the design of his scepter!
04 April 2005, 07:50 PM
your drawing skils are inspring.. very nice idea.. i sort of similiar i think, but havent read yours properly
04 April 2005, 10:16 PM
Looking really nice dude. The composition is much much better than the last one. I agree with ANGEL about the composition. Maybe add another foreground element on the top right or move one of the tigers to the right side to get that triangular composition where the ice queen and the creature is centered... i don't know. It's just a thought :)
04 April 2005, 12:27 AM
foxoo: thank you, Ive settled on this last concept now
virtuoso: thanks michael, I'm feeling much happier with this now. Just need to get my booster rocket boots on and get colouring it!
NOOB: *grin* I might hang a couple of spiders from the ceiling...
calisto: Hi! yeah, I've been looking at anything vaguely cave like I can get my hands on, so hopefully I can make it work.
Wil: thanks, thats very kind of you to say so...
Arc80: cheers mate! I've sorted the perspective out with the cats, and made his scpeter much more impressive and the light source, so hopefully it should balance out on the next post.
04 April 2005, 01:25 AM
Not a huge change as far as overall composition goes. I tweaked the perspective between the cats and the figures, so the cats don\'t look so huge, and the figures fill more of the picture. I gave the demon a more suitable, less namby-pamby staff, which will also be the main light source for the image. Updated the background so that there was more of a sense of space and grandeur to the cave, and then finally added a rough greyscale lighting test. I\'m happy with this enough to warrant drawing it out by hand now, so I think I\'ll post the line art any time soon!
04 April 2005, 01:33 AM
nice sketchs...and going better! good luck!
04 April 2005, 08:40 AM
Looking very cool.
I think having the staff as the main light source is a really good thing, it's placed in just the right spot to light up the faces of the two main characters which should pull the eye to them and away from the cats (even though they do look cool too!).
The only thing I might say (which is a bit late, sorry!), is that I'm not 100% sure about the musculature on the far left shoulder. His trap' looks too long into his deltoid, perhaps half the amount of trap' we can see and lengthen the foremost part of the shoulder muscle? You have a line to hint the bit I mean already in the shoulder. I hope you can follow this explaination and understand what I mean, and it's not too late to change, if you feel I'm right that is.
Hope you don't mind, otherwise the whole thing is coming together really well - certainly one pic I think could be in the running for goodies.
04 April 2005, 08:14 PM
M477: Thanks for that, you're absolutely right. My technical knowledge of anatomy is sketchy to say the least (I had to look up the terms), as I've never done life drawing, and tend to remember anatomy as a series of lines and masses, rather than the actual muscles, something I'm trying to change now. But yes, the higher line is where I should have lead that muscle from, and I'll probably have to bring the whole shoulder in a little too.
And as for the goodies, heh heh heh... I'd run naked down our street if that happened. An honourable mention would be fantastic, but I already have a list as long as my arm of artists who deserve it way more than I do.
04 April 2005, 08:20 PM
Hmm, I think your latest is well, cute :P
Nice characters, keep up the work. The cat in the front - weird position, the body doesnt seem right somehow...
All in all:thumbsup:
04 April 2005, 12:33 AM
you are good in hand drawing, and i love monster you have done.
you work in black and white first, so you better see how to put the lights on the scene??
04 April 2005, 01:54 AM
A -W - E - S - O - M - E ! love what you done with it Sam! Now it really gained 200% more power and depht! the lightning looks cool and lets vision a near future brilliant piece! burst it out Lady, Keep on rocking!
04 April 2005, 08:41 AM
Oh yes, this is again better....moving along really well.....The whole picture looks deeper, more alive again......theideas of the cats being scaled down is a good one.....and you did not lose there presence.....I like too how the hand of the Demon is very gentle, and taking care not to hurt the little fellow.......All in all a very nice entry and interesting to follow for both eye candy and tech tips.....real nice all the way sam.....:arteest:
04 April 2005, 10:02 AM
It is a good beginning! Your concept is not badly! Very good sketch..It seems that you have any dificults with hand drawing:) .I wait to see that with more details and colors... Just a little thing..you should perhaps move one of the tiger to the left like arc and Angel have already say..i agree with them.
04 April 2005, 03:47 PM
Wow, cool. I'm begining to feel the mood of the piece. About the cat in the front, i think you just need to give it a little bit of curveture on the body and that should fix the prob. Is your light source going to be more of a spectral or direct light soure? Just curious to know.
Anyway, i really dig this piece too. Can't wait to see your line drawing.
04 April 2005, 03:50 PM
teehee. cool avatar!your work looks so 3d when showed on ur thumbnail. it looks great. cheers!:applause:
04 April 2005, 06:29 PM
like what you doing here, monster started to look really good, so is the cave, creates just the right atmosphere
I think there is still something wrong her, if she is standing her proportions are of, around the waist and chest
and right arm looks like is coming out from different body
composition is great, waiting for colors
04 April 2005, 07:40 PM
Just came to see if you already updated! Your composition works so well, go Sam paint it!
04 April 2005, 08:27 PM
great progress, sam!
i like alot of your thumbnail sketches, and your choice among them is great. once you get the right color in right places, your concept will shine.
i didnt get to read through the whole thread, but i would like to believe the male and female character is not defined as master, or servant by its size or gender.
great work! and i will look forward to your progress!
04 April 2005, 11:37 AM
Thanks for your input guys!
foxoo: thank you! Yeah, I guess it does have a cuteish element to it from their body language. And the cats were drawn really roughly, will sort out their anatomy in the next post.
Choptider: thanks! And yes, I work black and white so I can work out where my darks and lights will be
Sacha: thanks m'dear. Your own concept rocks muchly too! Should be updating soon, the pencil work is taking me a while to get right.
Michael: thanks, glad you like the improvements, I'm pretty happy with the whole, just need to pin down the details.
Fiolke: thanks for your kind words! I'll probably shift the left tiger over a bit in the next post.
Arc80:Thanks for your input... snowleopards actually have quite straight backs as cats go, all their fur tends to level them out, but the perspective is a little off, so I'll try to fix it next time.
Calisto: *grin* thanks! I thought it more appropriate.
Korline: I should have resolved the anatomy issues hopefully next time, but you are right... her head is a bit too far up (very long neck) and her chest too far down, which is skewing the whole body. Thanks for pointing it out though. I'm dying to get colouring!
HOON: Thanks for the comments! I've tried to make it deliberately difficult to work out exactly who is master and servant, the demon is strictly speaking the master as he'll be holding a chain connected to her, but his body language says otherwise, that they are on more of a level footing.
04 April 2005, 05:39 PM
Great composition. Enjoyed seeing your progression of concept sketches to the one you arrived at now. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to seeing color.
One small suggestion: Try getting the vertical line out of the staff, especially as it is close to the edge of the illustration and parallel to it. See if you agree.
04 April 2005, 02:08 AM
Thank you so much my dear! Trusting on your awesome skills, i bet you come up with a fantastic update! Now, go mylady, go go go!
(and dont you dare to die here :p)

Hello Mam'zelle Zepyhri
you've got nice stuff here. I just took a look at your gallery... well, it's a real fine art you're practising.
About anatomy issues, you don't have to be a scientist : if the shape, mood, feelings are good why worrying about that. Many comics drawers add muscles where there shouldn't, so what ?
Your last post is really impressive :applause:
04 April 2005, 02:59 PM
gorvien1: thank you... and you know, you're absolutely right. I could not put my fingers on what was not quite right, but I think the staff is the problem, especially as everything else is flowy natural lines.
Sacha: *grin* no worries, I'm not kicking the bucket any time soon.
Spacesnail: salut! Et merci beaucoup... I won't embarrass myself by trying to resurrect my written french here. But as for anatomy, I try to strike a balance, but I'm a detail perfectionist at heart, and I'd love to be able to sketch like the great masters such as Da Vinci and rembrandt did, with a secure knowledge of what muscles are where and how they work and move, so I stress over anatomy a lot. I should probably just chill out more.
04 April 2005, 03:03 PM
I know I said I'd post line art, and I swear I'm almost there, but I thought I'd get some feedback on the demon. There are so many groovy things you can do with horns and spikey teeth. What are your thoughts guys? Any preferences? Not just these two, but the one in my previous sketch and the very first one with the egyptian looking lady...
You can view my milestones here: link (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=6925)
04 April 2005, 03:11 PM
Okay, here's the lineart for the cats... I like to have all my elements seperate so I can fiddle with composition as I construct the final image. Woman and demon coming soon.
04 April 2005, 03:42 PM
ooops, sorry for the "man" part..its my default word in every post..im embaressed since u are a girl. the snowleopards look great...keep up the good work, my dear lady!
04 April 2005, 03:46 PM
Thanks linda, and no worries about the man, i took it as a friendly gesture... people call me man quite a bit when posting on line, and dude... and mate... maybe I just have a virtual male aura? That and my last avatar didn't help, being two men... *grin8 thanks!
04 April 2005, 08:43 PM
Oh boy is someone VERY talented and extremely good at depisting as they will!
Sam; I have to state how much I enjoyed going through your thread.
Your works were so amazing to follow up onto. Even your concept 'Sketches' are things some here work a few days to give in as an entry!
I had loved your Spider idea... and especially how you had managed to put together a very lively composition from such a grotesquely prototyped subject.
But I understnad your point about feeling for/with the characters.
I think thats what makes some entries a bit more personal than others.
You sure seem to really know your way around penciles and brushes. I would really love to see where you take things!
Note; At least they have a better excuse with yourself; you happen to have a 'mix up' able name.
I know some female contestants here that have the most female name you can get; that happen to have to put up with "dude"'s and "Man"'s.
Well more girls showing up; this is definately to change I hope.
04 April 2005, 03:07 AM
Pretty cool :)
04 April 2005, 06:10 PM
Great linearts you coming up with! the demonhead in front for me works best, proportionally, he looks very well ballanced and the pullingbackforwards lower horns add a great dynamic. also, it makes him look very impressive. on the facedetails, i like the ripteeth moving upwards of your topleft demonsketch, look orcish and cool, and the little horns on the sides of his face are a great extra. also, the spikes running over the middleline of his skull are funk, but as i said, bothom right looks proportionally and dynamicly best for me. looks somehow like a demonking, and horns look mighty. :)
For the leopards, they look very cute maybe make one a slight but more agressive? Something on the kinetics on the right kitty looks strange, cuz it makes pass-step (front and back right foot forwards), sent u 2 pics, hope they show what i mean... of course those are just my point of view and as always just personal taste :) ... keep on going Sam, keep up the great work!
Love your Style!
04 April 2005, 06:18 PM
Cool, that's some nice line art you got there. I really like the detailings on that. They do seem to be a little cute, but i dont mind that at all. I think it'll go with your piece. Can't wait to see the whole piece.
PS: If i happen to keep saying dude to you, it's just i really like saying that word as you notice to all the thread i reply too  I guess i'm a little immature in that way :argh:
04 April 2005, 01:08 AM
Loving those demon heads
04 April 2005, 03:23 PM
04 April 2005, 04:40 PM
Black: thanks for that extensive comment! Glad you like the whole thread, and that hopefully there is some sense to it... my head is full of butterflies half the time, constantly changing direction, for no apparent reason. And I'm hoping to pick up with digital in the same way I have done with traditiona media, so fingers crossed.
And you know, I never thought about my name... *d'oh*
chaos8410: thank you!
Sacha: right and extremely helpful as always! You're such a doll. I'll probably end up using bits from one demon, and bits from the other, as these things pan out. And thanks to your endless help, I shall endeavour to make the other leopard more agressive looking, to put in the fact that there could be some kind of threat up ahead.
Arc 80: Thank you! I think snowleopards do look kinda cute when they'e not snarling, with all that fluff and their rounded faces. But I'm going to try and introduce a snarlish expression with one. And really, no worries with the dude thing, I chat to a couple of americans, both of which call me that from time to time... purely a social thing, not immature, hell, I do it too.
Louis: thanks! Can't beat a good demon head.
xric7: coming soon, I promise!
04 April 2005, 05:22 PM
excllent sketches!!! i wish i could do that... thnx for stopping by my thread, your suggestions are really helpfull...
04 April 2005, 06:35 PM
You have some fantastic sketches here. I really love the spider. Look forward to colored pieces!
04 April 2005, 11:01 PM
arkinet: thank you and you're welcome, hope it didn't sound too negative! I really love the concept.
fensterer: thank you.. the spider will be done eventually, maybe save him for a more relevent challenge.
04 April 2005, 11:11 PM
This is going to be a bit topsy turvy as far as submiting milestones goes, as I needed a backdrop to play about with my lineart on. My final lineart will be this colour WIP with the two pencil drawings laid over the top so I can see how they fit into the scene. This is, for the moment, the colour palette I'll be using for the background. The woman and cats will be in similar, if beigier hues, and I've not decided on what colour to do the demon. Any suggestion as to what would work as a counterpoint to all the blue without completely overpowering the scene?
04 April 2005, 03:37 AM
The ice cave is looking sweet. Can't wait to see more details.
04 April 2005, 04:02 AM
your entry is coming along again nicer and more in-depth sam........The ice caverns will be very beautiful, and the start looks quite promising......As for the demons color........Taking all you have to consider.......I think .....a Blue black....Sinister,and evil....but with a layer of blue ice laying upon the demons skin.......Somehow I can picture this Sam.......Now it's up to you to create.....thats the tough part......but i trust in your skilll set to pull this off........I'll be looking for more and to see where yo go from here.....all the best, and see you soon I hope......:arteest:
04 April 2005, 05:49 AM
Beautifull And very moody cave you painted! Loving it. as for colors, if you want him as decent as possible, you might go for something in the cyan/blue spectrum that would make him some sort of yeti, wich would so far make sense in that envitonment. A more powefull and eventually worth a try could be some deepred/black wich wud make him more a classical monster, sort of more reptilic or so..., for having a moster you like :)
I have no doubts you'll find a great colorpalette for your creation, keep on rocking my lady!
looking forward to your next update, keep on rocking!
04 April 2005, 08:07 AM
Hi Sam, thanks for posting your comments on my thread.:)
I'm only a bit more than a week old on this forum, so didn't get the time to browse through the enormous amount of great entries yet. Took the time to check yours and liked it a lot sofar. Really nice drawings and designs for your concept. I think your new one will be stronger emotionally than the spider one. Good choice there! just have question regarding the chain linking the queen to the scepter of the creature, is this intentionaly making of her the servant of the creature?
I checked also your gallery link and found absolutely beautiful paintings there. I'm sure your final entry will be stunning.
Will come back for sure to see your progress on this one.
Good luck:thumbsup:
04 April 2005, 08:14 AM
Your background looks beautiful!! really!!:applause: ice texture look perfect! great job! i'll come back to see your characters in this background.:)
Keep it up
04 April 2005, 08:49 AM
Fabulous........respect for your achievment, here. That really does the job.
04 April 2005, 10:11 AM
beautiful ice cave. i love the looks of it so far!
04 April 2005, 12:04 AM
Michael: You're a creative mastermind, you know that? What a simply fantastic idea for the demon.... I'm not sure my skills are up to it, but damn it, that doesn't mean I won't try. I think maybe with a slightly purplier blue, it could look great... thanks so much!
Sacha: yeah, I thought about that, as it would be the logical choice in terms of camouflage and fitting with his natural environment, but if nothing else, I'm an absolute sucker for red demons... so i might work with a hybrid of your and michael's suggestion and go really dark, which should help the seeress pop out too.
Thierry: No probs, it was a great thread, there are so many out there I wouldn't know where to point to start you off! I must get round to having a look at your website, if you have one, when you said you came from an animation background, you really got me curious. As for your chain question: yes, the chain will definitely show she is the demon's property, as such, but I want that to be the only hint as to who is, in a hierarchy sense, the master. But it will also serve a secondary purpose, which will be clear when I get round to writing the snippet that goes with the image.
Fiolke: thanks! This is just a really rough start, a couple of hours at most... the lone icicle gives an idea of where I'd like it to be when it's finished.
Paul: thanks man, that's a great compliment coming from you.
Linda: cheers! Not a patch on your backgrounds though... wow....
04 April 2005, 05:27 AM
My jaw would drop and refuse to return shall you care to have the whole rows of icicles that perfectly done!!
Things are looking impressive. I would really love to see where you are getting it to.
As impressive as it looks.. it is very difficult for me to personally relate it to the characters you tend on introducing. I am just very curiouse on what you plan on doing..
Bring em on!
04 April 2005, 05:04 PM
Okay, thanks to some suggestions previously, I reworked the right hand snowleopard, made him look more aggressive, to show there is a tangible threat, even if it's not in the picture. And to try and make them look less cute... but it's hard.. they're so fluffy and cuddly...
04 April 2005, 05:29 PM
Hey, very cool. Looking good. Can't really see any mistake (maybe because i haven't slept yet, hehehe). Oooh and i like those necklace. Very cool dude.... i mean lady :)
Can't wait till you put all of them together. :argh: Just post it know.
Cheers
04 April 2005, 09:11 AM
Great improvements, I like the necklaces and the new expression of the right one. The left one seems a bit neutral/static though. maybe a slightly open mouth would help breath some more life in it... :)
By the way, sorry but no website yet. Still working on it...
04 April 2005, 03:38 PM
Woo hoo! Finally, I manage to get the whole image put together. I'm pretty happy with it as is, I'll probably tweak the odd thing here and there while I paint it., like the back legs of the left hand snowleopard.
But woah... when did the days counter get to 19? I'm sure that was on forty days not so long ago... time flies when you can't indulge your own artistic ventures! No prizes for guessing what I'll be doing this bank holiday...
04 April 2005, 03:42 PM
Black: *grin* you're too kind... hopefully I'll be able to get the whole thing looking that good! I'm hoping the characters will tie with the image more once I get some colours and textures in.
Arc: delivered as asked! Hope you like it.
Thierry: I probably will do that with the left hand snowleopard, as it's now a bit dull upto the right hand one! And I asked you over on your other thread whether you had anything else up elsewhere on the web. I love your style.
04 April 2005, 03:53 PM
whooo.. like something out of World of Warcaft. I think the demon's chest is out of perspective and its left hand (holding the staff) also looks a bit strange. And the snow leopard at the furthest left looks like its leg is buried knee deep into the snow when you put it side by side with the other leopard.
All the best with your entry! yeah, time sure pass by very fast when one is always thinking about the contest.
04 April 2005, 05:51 PM
WOOHOO, looking good. The flow of the composition is very pleasing. Just some minor tangency issue, the edge of the staff is too close to the edge of your page (the top area and the sides). I know you're not done with it, so i'll wait and see when you colour everything. And yes, times flies by like crazy. I think i'm only half way done with mine  19 days and counting...sight
Good detailing dude.
04 April 2005, 06:43 PM
This is so cool, what a nice picture this will be! So fantasy..gee:thumbsup:  Can't wait to see it with more colours and of course finished.Well I don't have much personal illustration anywhere as I've been so busy for years now with animation, but I've put a link in my reply in my thread to a film I finished recently. The universe in it is less fantasy and aimed more at children. Hope you'll like it though.
04 April 2005, 08:01 PM
beautifull, i cant wait to see it all done! bravo Zepyhri! is he goin to be a big red monster?
04 April 2005, 10:48 PM
wowieee!! this is going to be a great pic... question: is your big fella gonna be a hairy one? coz thats one big freezer they're in... jst a thought, most monsters i saw on movies are either clothed or hairy specially when they are in an arctice setting...oh well, its a fantasy world so you can just ignore me:D ... be back for more :bounce:
04 April 2005, 11:40 PM
Hey Sam! This looks so great my dear, the composition wokrs really fine and i love the "snarling-update" on your kitty
Impatiently looking forward to your paintingsession, your lineart works fine floating and clean solid. a great base for a most wonderfull piece! Can't wait to see your next update, go my lady, go go go!!!
05 May 2005, 11:46 AM
Oh yes..............Looking mighty fine......bottomline without getting fancy and all technical.......it looks wonderful......the lines and details, the whole set up.....the characters too are all real interesting.......looking forward to your color work/art,and wish you the best in you're continued efforts sam....until later.all the best.......:arteest:
05 May 2005, 10:57 PM
I've been awway for too long time !
Nice pencil sketching and comp  I especially love the woman design :bounce: and the snowleopard too !
About the demon, mmmmhh... I feel something strange with its lower body, maybe misplaced leg ? Another litlle crit : the bootom of picture cuts the leopard's right hand
Anyway I can't wait your coloring... Good luck with the lighting of ice :arteest:
Keeping an eye on this
05 May 2005, 11:14 PM
Jeremoo: Thanks yeah, there is definitely somethign off with the demon, the longer I look at it. I may well wait until I've blocked him in, then I might be able to tell. And I'll probably change it so the far left snowpeopard either looks like he's standing on a ledge, or sitting down.
Arc80: cheers, the composition needs to be widened slightly in regards to the canvas size, to get both the staff and the leopard's paw in. Hopefully that will solve some issues. And I'm so going to be rushing my ass off with this...
Thierry: thank you! I'll defiinitely check out that link, thanks!
Calisto: thanks, and knowing me.. yes, he will!
Arkinet: you're too kind! Not sure about hairy.... perhaps a bit beyond my capabilities this far, but I really liked the earlier suggestion of having him icy looking, so I might try that.
Sacha: Working on colour as we speak, just playing with masses and colour schemes. Ha, then you'll see I'm just a fluke with a pencil... *grin*
Michael: thanks, as always. Painting it is causing me some trepidation, there is so much to live up to on this community!
Spacesnail: You are absolutely rigt about the demon. I drew everythign in when did him, but something was off at the basic stage, and I 've only just noticed recently. I'll fix it as I colour, I think, but his neck is virtually non existent too... As for the leopard's paw, that was me being hasty in cropping the image down at the lo rs stage for posting it here.. on the actual thing the whole leg is included. I hope I don't disappoint, your own works are amazing...
05 May 2005, 02:21 AM
so impatiently waiting here... hehe, go m'dear, let your brush fly :)
05 May 2005, 10:15 AM
haven`t been here for a while and wow!! looking very good! this is much better than the first one i think (i liked it too.. but this i like even more) i love the snowleopards! and the colors and the demon! and the beautyful mistress and the ice and all    very beautyful! :)
05 May 2005, 02:29 PM
This is such a learning process for me, as I have no structure to the way I paint digitally, this being only the second real digital painting I've attempted (i've done odds and ends in digital, but only done one full, realism piece before this!) and looking at the standards of entry round here, I've really got my work cut out! I'm aiming for a degree of realism, but not ultra photo-realistic, with more of a painterly feel to it. I intend that all the extremes of the demon will look like icicle, or clumps of ice, hopefully... but this will give you some idea of the way it might look finished...
So far to go, so little time...
05 May 2005, 02:38 PM
For someone with little practice in digital paint this is looking very good, I like the rendering of the red monster's teeth (you really do like big red monsters!:) ) they look translucent. The fur is well painted too. Really good start. You'll get there:thumbsup:
05 May 2005, 02:41 PM
looks great zep!
05 May 2005, 02:52 PM
Woohoohoo Chapeau Bas !
Keep it up :thumbsup::bounce:
05 May 2005, 02:58 PM
this is looking great. The juxtaposition in colour give the piece some punch. the concept is done in such a way as to wonder which is the servant and which is the master. I like the openess of interpretation.
05 May 2005, 03:02 PM
Wow, beautifull. Love the first glance of your piece and the iceparts work so well. Love the structures you started work out, the fur, on her looks so soft and floating, her skin so soft and beautifull. Love the jewelery on her, the shiny gems with the subtile refractions.
I'm already a sucker for your demon, his iceparts fit so well, its very original to work on him like that, judged from what i see at the moment, your piece will ROCK BOMBASTIC!!! Keep it up m' Lady! Love your update!
05 May 2005, 06:21 PM
Whoa, that is looking really nice Sam. I love the ice queen and the creature is looking great. Good touch on how you are making part of the creature ice. SUch a nice detail on that.
More...MORE...MORE updates
cheers
05 May 2005, 06:29 PM
very nice stuff. and you ahve not had a lot of experience painting digitaly? This is looking really good.. just keep it coming
05 May 2005, 10:09 PM
A top quality thread this one! Haven't checked on it for a while (I've been lazy.. ssshh) but this one has been coming on really well. I love the whole ice thing, although it will make the whole thing a hell of a lot harder to paint so good luck! Looking forward to seeing the next post
05 May 2005, 09:50 AM
Wow, Zep, you are an extremely fast learner! Second work you say... My second digital pic was an awful mess with no detailing...my envy is gonna kill me! :banghead:
Love the emotional side of your piece, the beast looks so mighty and tender at the same time and those "fluffy kitties" - I want them as my pets, they are so cute!!!
I'll definitely stick to your thread, marvelous work, keep going, wish you all the best! :applause:
My Master and Servant 2D
05 May 2005, 08:27 AM
Thanks guys, this encouragement is really giving me the confidence to go all out on this pie. Any tips anyone has on using Painter would really come in handy, as I've only had the full version for a few months, and I'm still getting to grips with it.
Thierry: Thank you! Yeah, I have a soft spot for monsters and demons in general, but especially red ones! Still a bit of work to do on the teeth, but I'm happy with it this far.
NOOB: thanks mate!
Spacesnail: merci, mon ami!
stevethomas: thanks, I was hoping the red wouldn't dominate the composition. And yes, that's my intention, though there will be a definite clue in the finished pic to tell you who, in the hierarchal sense, is the master.
Sacha: thanks hun, I'm really excited about this, it could be the best work I've ever executed. Now just to finish it in time!
Arc80: Thanks Archie, and the ice thing actually happened by accident, I was blurring off some of the edges and accidentally smudged the blue into the rd, and voila, my mind saw it as ice. I love happy accidents.
W!L: Nope, though I use PS pretty much every day, and I've used digital occasionally to colour stuff up.
M477: Thanks! And better late than never hey? I'll have to get my butt back to your thread too... and yeah, I like nothing, if not making life hard for myself!
Nata: It's only my second full digital painting (at least where I was actually TRYING to get a decent result) I've been using digital media for a year and a half on and off.. and I'm glad the beast looks like he's tender, with all those teeth and muscles, I was relying on body language. And thanks! I'll certainly be keepin an eye on your thread...
05 May 2005, 08:29 AM
dude quit thanking everyone i do more asshole.
05 May 2005, 08:33 AM
Been working on this every spare hour I have, I'm determined to finish! Worked some more on the woman and the beast, blocked in the first snowleopard roughly. Quite happy with the cooler hues everything seems to have and I really like how the demon's wrist bracelets look, almost water-like. I've darkened the beast down a little and sorted some perspective issues out in his face and her body. Steaming ahead...
05 May 2005, 08:35 AM
Some detail, showing the demon's cracked icy teeth and horns... and more of the seeress' dress.
05 May 2005, 08:36 AM
oy.. now thats what i call a cool work... lol.. cool works on many levels here:D
05 May 2005, 08:37 AM
beautifull, sick details! i love it. keep it up! cant wait to see it finished!:bounce:
05 May 2005, 08:40 AM
dyam! the ice effects look great, post sum close ups of the monsters face!!
05 May 2005, 08:47 AM
wow I really like the icy monster, the picture is looking really good.
I just saw this thread and I have to say I'm really impressed with all the sketches and stuff.
05 May 2005, 08:57 AM
looking good! The ice princess looks fantastic and great anatomy.
The face of the monster is a little flat though. Mabe the effect is caused by the teeth cause
they are in one straight line.
Anyways great work!
05 May 2005, 03:41 PM
Oh Sam! this simply turns out sooooooo beautifull. i am speechless, wow. keep up your nitrospeed and rock the day m'dear! love the subtile shades, specular highlights and nuances, the huge amount of details and the very intimate and sensual way your characters interact with each other. this simply is going to be most spectacular, can't wat to see you finnish this! go go go, my lady! rock em all!!!  :buttrock:
05 May 2005, 03:52 PM
whooaa, thats one cool, i mean literally:D , beast you got there. I agree w/ Goro. I know youre not done so I'll be back for more
05 May 2005, 10:10 AM
just stopped by to :applause:
very nice work! iīm in love with your ice-princess!
05 May 2005, 10:24 AM
good anbiance, i like the cloths of the servant, hard work on this, good work
05 May 2005, 12:40 PM
Colors are really great, especially the beast one. Nice qork on the effect of ice. Very impressive.
I actually prefer your picture cut a this height that with the tiger but it's a question of feeling.
05 May 2005, 01:24 PM
lovely image.. there are really feelings put into it :)
i must say you handle ice very well.. the colors are very good picked, except for the ice monster. I think its great that you havent made him all blue like 'icemonsters' usually are. But I believe it could improve his coldness by making him more blue red.. magenta. or actually you have already done that.. so, just work on the detailing . im sure this will rock
05 May 2005, 01:30 PM
OH MY GOD!!! Zep, that is just gorgeous!!! :applause:
You overcame yourself working on those horns and teeth, keep it up I want to see more! :bounce:
My Master and Servant 2D
05 May 2005, 05:34 PM
Lots of good stuff going on here Sam! I love the horns, the ice, the girl! Woohoo! No crits ATM!
05 May 2005, 05:52 PM
I love this ice rendering you did on the horns and the bracelets. Superbe work Sam! Cool jewel designs too and strong emotional posing:scream: :)
You're close to the end, hang on to it. Bet we all will have the same type of week-end behind a 21 inches screen!
05 May 2005, 03:14 AM
Wooow.. I am so sorry for not paying a visit ealier.. literally.
Things have ecalated rapidly!
I have to admit that I had REALLY not expecte dthe Red skin colour! And I loved it! It took away all of my worries with the rest of the image. I had stated that I had some worries.. but that was basically from my expectations of a white furry beast. Yeah I should know better than to be expecting a cliché from you but even still
You simply did the same thing that you had done to me in the spider concept.. I must admit that they were pleasent suprises.
One question here though.. I will feel stupid if you already said it and I missed out on it; but... what is it's epidermal construction? Is he furry? Or is it directly hairless skin?
If it is hairless skin I would advise you to try out and see if adding a few colours would help bring flesh under the coverage.. sort of like to not have the skin with the same thickness all through out. A bit translucent at time or crusty at the other.. sort of like what you would do with human or amphibian skin.
You know the story...
The unitone complex sort of leaves your hard work on the ice parts not vivid.
If it is fur.. well not much to say.. ten paint the colours all as you like. It would have the bit's that are 'ice'ed a bit more realistcal as in to be stuck on it's fur rather than It being composed of such an elemental state.
I dunno.. I just couldn't leave it aside  .. I am sure you know what you are doing..
Waiting for the update

First off, i'm a huge fan of your style  and if i ever need to hire a concept artist in the future (for my films...crossing my fingers), i'll make sure to contact you Ms. Sam Hogg :D That ice just looks AWESOME.
The only critzs i have is, the creatures arms looks a little small for his body size and what Black said about the epidermal construction. Other than that, i will shut my mouth and just wait for another update and finish piece.
cheers

This is for NOOB... a closeup of the demon's head, though I've worked on it a bit more, added in the 'crown', which is supposed to look like it's the source of the ice on the demon's body, a symbol of his royalty.
And here are some closeups of the seeress and the first snarling snowleopard:

Arkinet: Thanks! And I'll try and sort the teeth.
MDN67: Thank you Laurent, and yeah, no kidding, I like a challenge... :argh:
authentic: thanks, and I know what you mean about the close up, but hopefully everything will work onceit's all put together.

Arc80: thanks m'dear, that's heartening to know, I'd jump on the opportunity if it ever arose. And darn, you're right about his arms... hrmmm... the foremost certainly is... the rear maybe not so, but the perspective on that bracelet is not doing the foreshortening any favours...
Ninja: Thanks mate, just to get it finished now...
Mordalles: thank you, I'm partial to the demon myself :D
