very first sketch... just to visualise idea that i have in my head...
seppuku - ritual suicide. the peak of the dramatic relattions between master and servant
03 March 2005, 09:17 PM
I like your idea. I hope I dont sound harsh, but I am concerned that your current concept might be too complicated. We only have a little more than a month to have these completely finished and submited. I plan on having mine finished by May 5th. I have no idea what your 3D skill level and speed is but 5 asian warriors would be more than I could handle even if I had two months for the project.
I would simplify the image to just a master and a guy comitting suicide. Maybe you can work with just those elements and then if you have the time you can add another warrior or even 2 if you really have alot of time. I have a feeling simple and strong is the better way to go for this challenge.
Still its a great idea. I wish you the best of luck with it. :)

we'll see how fast the progress's going. i'm going to create just one body and rig it... and try to play with clothfx... at that point i think it doesn't matter is it 2 figures or 5... i think texturing and lighting will take most of the time...
03 March 2005, 10:06 PM
Cool deal Eug55! I look forward to seeing it.
03 March 2005, 02:14 AM
spent couple hours modeling basic body (polygons)... later will work with model in zb...
03 March 2005, 04:23 AM
i'm done for today. tomorrow i'll try to play around with the room and may be some cloth tests
03 March 2005, 02:03 AM
just a first pretest.
03 March 2005, 02:11 AM
didn't expect that cloth would be such a pain - had to use zb. that might be a problem
03 March 2005, 05:46 AM
couple of hours of zb
03 March 2005, 06:21 AM
-the torso seems a bit tall
-if I remember correctly his seppuku wouldn't be accepted with a facial expression like this
-the background looks great
03 March 2005, 06:59 AM
wow... it's refreshing to come to a thread and be pleasently suprised.
The render of the room looks sooo good! Good job
the character looks cool so far
03 March 2005, 07:06 AM
thaks for comment grau
- it's just a half of torso - and a first test render... i'll position it properly later
- this guy is in state of clinical death... just a split second before he falls. his face expression is a convulsive reflex... hi was calm when he started cutting - believe me <-joke
- thanks for your kind words
03 March 2005, 07:09 AM
i'm glad to see that people are actually looking into this thraed
03 March 2005, 07:56 AM
The concept and modeling is really good, something very different! The characters and house are looking nice already, maybe you coul add some classic japanese view outside the room, visible in the distance through the doorway.
03 March 2005, 08:39 AM
your reply proves that my sketch sucks. elements of japanese garden were planed to be visible thru the doorway - sakura, pond etc... they are on a sketch (unrecognizable thou.. maybe i should put little pointers - "tree" "lake" <-joke)
03 March 2005, 09:37 PM
worked on shogun's hands - the only visible element of his body (except head of course)
03 March 2005, 10:03 PM
just a quick test
03 March 2005, 10:35 PM
lookin good eug55 ... i nice little ritualistic suicide always makes me smile :bounce:
thinkin though that the heads on these guys needs to be sized up about 30% ... bodies look o.k. (especially when they'll have cloth) .. but the heads are pretty small to me
looking good

thanks for comment, pigwater
heads look normal to me (i have a small head too - i'm serious)... but i'll try to scale it back and forth...
04 April 2005, 07:42 PM
just a quick lighting test
04 April 2005, 11:12 PM
I'm really digging your lighting so far. I have some comments, but I want to wait to see the next progress before I start critiques. I like the concept and the idea.
04 April 2005, 12:07 AM
I love the lighting in the room, how long does that take to render and what type of machine you have to pull it off? I always find lighting nearly impossible to get looking good.
At least within a good render time :)
04 April 2005, 08:33 AM
still struggling with lighting,
also moving caracters around scene trying to find right compositional spot... also i had to create bunch of secondary lights just to balance main light comming from background... i think i have to give up with lights for now and go back to modeling
2Neomage: i have a really slow computer... all my "quick tests" are eternity
2HillbillyKing: thanks for stopping by

practically i've done nothing for the last couple of days (1 month old baby-boy demands more attention than i thought)
... only tonight started to model shogun's cloth in zb (and last weekend spent a bit of time doing face pretexture for shogun as well)... test render - just light cache (to save time)... no reflection, no secondary light ... nothing - just to get a rough idea about lightmap
04 April 2005, 04:37 PM
working on shogun's cloth
04 April 2005, 11:53 PM
very nice,eug55. I like the concept. room lighting look good, too. keep it coming.
04 April 2005, 05:37 PM
haven't done anything since last week... just last night worked a bit on background - it's donna be pond (may be couple kois in it)
04 April 2005, 09:05 PM
it would be nice to add some color diffusion to the window on a few panes to give the image some mood.i really like the render and the overall light of the scene.
what software are you using?

Well, one of the rare original ideas in hundreds of challengers concepts.
Garden became too dominant in the last picture. Distracts the attention from whats going on at the place. You may use a slight fog or something else.
