Latest Update: Modeling: More Musher (

Added some more detail. More to go. The coat will be fur and the boots leather. He's older but will have some hair and teeth and eyes, the eyes I forgot to add before zbrushing so that I'll add later. Oops. Just working from 19th and early 20th century pictures.

Don't need this twice.

Concept beginning which proved to be more than reasonable to accomplish in 3 dimensions.

03-29-2005, 04:29 AM (

This is just a preliminary concept.

Just roughing out the scale of the actors here and a couple thoughts on composition. Nothing significant yet.

One of my favorite authors as a kid was Jack London. The thing that came to mind in this case and stuck was a theme similar to one from White Fang. The idea was, to depict one master, the musher Henry, fighting off a pack of starving wolves as they beset him along with his 2 remaining dogs on their way to deliver a corpse to it's burial spot. Henry also served as servant to a wealthy family, who paid him to trek the corpse in a pine box across hundreds of miles of wild arctic terrain. In turn, his sled-dogs served as servant to Henry, pulling the sled laden with corpse. The wolves in this case were servant to their hunger and willing to do whatever necessary to satiate their most basic need. The master of all in the story is the wild, to whom all are at it's mercy.

So I started painting away at a concept, which realisically, is way more than I can tackle right now and I think would be better served as a 2D piece. I might come back and finish.

While researching late 19th and early 20th century arctic gear, I came on some cool pictures of Gunnar Kasson and his famous dog Balto ( So this led to a much simpler idea of a larger than life Balto, whom caries a healer on back.

I'll post up a story sometime soon.

Just some more charcoal sketches of some character ideas. I am not too thrilled with any of these. One idea was to make a one piece "body mitten" type outfit.

04-01-2005, 03:15 AM (

Some more quick charcoals of the dog. I thought the back riding idea was kind of impracitcal being in an arctic enviroment and the dog would be jostling all over the place. I sketched out some small 1 person sleds still geared towards being pulled by a larger-than-life dog but overall, I am not too excited about the concept.

Simple charcoal sketch. Since I wasn't too happy with the last couple ideas I am just working on some more ideas. One is this one based on my own bratty parrot. She likes to sit on my shoulder when I am home and scream (parrot-speak for "sing") and use me as a moving climbing toy. I might try some variants of this. Let me know if you have any ideas or preferences.

hi. good sketches and unique idea. keep it up- i like your drawings a lot... good luck to you-

A bit cleaner sketch. Charcoal. I'm still formalizing the parrot concept so once that is done I'll sketch out the final composition. I want to get started on the model.

Juha - Kiitos! I hope to have some fun with this.

Hi there muckywetnoodle!
Coll scetches indeed!
Like your graphic, man.
Actually I like more idea with wolfs and fireplce - it is dramatic, original (well, didn't see such around here) and I like your dog/wolf concept. Reminds me adventure books form my childhood:)
Wait for your final idea.
Keep it arriving

Deryk - Thanks! That would indeed be a challenge to finish. :) I'll give it some thought.

04-08-2005, 04:55 AM (

I went from Clay for a basic mesh, to Maya to create some handy poly groups that zbrush recognizes to hide parts and then some blocking in with Zbrush. I'll be finishing up the body and doing a detail pass on the face next. I won't be getting too crazy with detail on the body since he'll be covered in fur. mmmmmm, furrrrr.

04-10-2005, 07:49 AM (

I just have to make him a tongue. Texture and fur coming up.

04-10-2005, 09:15 AM
nice, the dog is very good, im looking forward to see more :)

04-10-2005, 09:53 AM
nice doggy u got there:bounce:
keep it up:thumbsup:

Hey muckywetnoodlem,
Really happy that you've chosen the first idea ! Modelling looks very promissing
That character got very "powerful" exterior ! Cool details in his anatomical structure:thumbsup:
For me is a special interest to see developing some stuff showed in phases !
The only thing now I'd suggest is that tale is too thin (well, if it will have fur, it doesn't matter:)
Good work, mate:scream:

Nice dog modeling, but the head seems a bit small compare to its paws.

04-11-2005, 07:14 AM
The doggy is good! Looks realistic, nice modelling!

04-17-2005, 07:11 AM (

I'll be doing a detail pass next and adding some shading to the bits that will be showing through the fur. This current diffuse will serve as the practical fur color map.

04-17-2005, 07:16 AM
Jelmer, Mr Micro26, Deryk, jarvetu- Thanks! ;)

arlutik- I'll probably have to adjust some things once the fur is added, I'm not sure yet how much bulk the fur will add. Thanks for the comment.

04-19-2005, 05:29 AM (

Texturing is done unless anyone's got comments. :) I'll be adding shave fur next.

04-19-2005, 05:35 AM
hey there dude.. textures look good and will look even better when the fur is on there just one little comment if you dont mind.. you detailed the dogs muscles pretty well and its a shame that the textures cover the dogs muscle i suggest going back to the texture board and shading the muscle tone a little so its at least noticable a little... see how you go, thats just an opinion you dont have to since we are running out of time.. good luck dude.. hope to see more prosperess progress from you

04-19-2005, 05:38 PM
Thanks Neeno, good point. I'll be using the same model modified for the wolves which will be pretty gaunt. I figured the fur would cover a lot of that definition but I'll see. E3 is going to make finishing this hairy (no pun intended) :)

04-26-2005, 06:33 AM (

Not much to look at yet but I started the musher. I have plenty of reference to work from for the high res version.

The fur is still in progress for the dog.

04-28-2005, 05:49 AM (

Spent a few hours on him...

05-01-2005, 02:22 AM (

Added some more detail. More to go. The coat will be fur and the boots leather. He's older but will have some hair and teeth and eyes, the eyes I forgot to add before zbrushing so that I'll add later. Oops. Just working from 19th and early 20th century pictures.
