Ok I have added a bit more detail to Pain's texture. This is hopefully the last day of my cold.. but with only 25 days left... I feel under the gun to get stuff done..

Congrats again to the winners of the last challenge and Know.. I plan on raising my bar even higher this time. :) See ya round.

Hi Richard, welcome back. I guess youre in the lab thinking about, how to put Billions of little pieces into this image as well. Stunning amount the last time. This time Ill try to follow the thread more, even thogh: If it gets as crouded as the last time, I might give up at some time. It was totally impossible to follow last time. Just impossible..:)

See ya around, go have fun. And yeah, also looking forward to the magazine:thumbsup:

Ok guys n gals, here is my first concept sketch. This is Thanatos lord of the dead, master of the afterlife. I will be detailing out the followers of death soon after. The main focus in this was the 6 appendaged pale horse of thanatos in this image. I will be detailing him out further as well. Stay tuned.

03-29-2005, 12:04 AM
Nice to see you back, Richard. :)

As for the concept, is the beast suppose to be the servant or is it an extention of the Master? (read something about followers; would they be the servants?)

03-29-2005, 12:07 AM
i like the sketch man !

03-29-2005, 12:08 AM
The beast is an extension of his master. The servants will be the followers. I am working on a few different designs that may be them. Will be back with more. This is only a character sketch not an entire scene sketch.

03-29-2005, 12:18 AM
nice concept gl modleing it

03-29-2005, 12:28 AM
Dude awsome  Looking forward to seeing this one enter the 3D realm!!! good luck with your work and good to see you here...

03-29-2005, 01:10 AM

One of the servents. There will be a few of Cylee followed by some hooded followers with sunken faces.

03-29-2005, 02:06 AM
Cylee U-47 Pleasure Drone. lol, wow(I wonder whats holding up that piece of wood, pun unintended:D ). Nice concepts, this reminds me of the early 90s comic books (havent read a comic book since though so i dont know what current comic books look like). I hope to see more soon.

03-29-2005, 02:32 AM
Very nice concepts you have! :D Good luck and hope to see more from you ! :D

03-29-2005, 02:40 AM

03-29-2005, 02:46 PM
Wow, thanks everyone. Its so humbling to wake up to such wonderful reviews. I am back on the job and this engine is picking up steam... I am glad to know that the style that has developed through me is pleasing to your eyes... :)

03-29-2005, 03:20 PM
 wonderful sketch man!! Really great start! Cant wait to see the models!
See ya!

03-29-2005, 03:29 PM
Great illustration! I'm assuming you are an Image comics fan? Very similar style (And is your logo a Shaman's Tears reference?) Well, good luck! I can't wait to see this heading into 3D

03-29-2005, 04:46 PM
Thanks guys. I have some new stuff coming here. I did two rough sketches of the scene and 3 drawings of the other characters in them. I am going to keep this focused around organics because I feel that is my strongest suit. The background I see as being next to the river styx leading from the door step of hell's keep. I see thousands of robed figures holding some form of glowing staff. I see skulls, fire and lava on baked cracked mud type earth. I see a spinning trail of spectars flowing out of Hell's Keep and swirling around Matilda Mistress of Madness (Vampire). I see Gutter the sadistic glutten standing behind towering over some of the robed individuals. I see Mankind, the serial killer granted a immortality of murder with his hooks spinning around his body. I see the three servent Cylee's one with a sitting with a gag in her mouth, one standing with blinders on her eyes and one croched over in pain holding her ears shrieking as they each divine the outcome of the conquest at the threshold of the Da'ath (doorway between dimensions).

stevesherrin - I love the old school stuff. I was actually hired by Image comics back in 96. But I was too young and my parents forbid me from moving across the country to work for them... geez what a burn early on... :( But yes I love the master... Jim / Jae Lee, Sam Kieth, Frank Miller, Whilce Portacio (spelling) but the artist whom started my love was B.W. Smith!!!

As for the logo it actually came from a girlfriends mother who claimed I was RA the sun god prince in a past life.. I know that sounds fruity, not that I believe her but I noticed that RA had the same initials as my changed name Richard Alexander, so I changed RA's symbol to my true name Alaric and wrote the name in fancy characters laid on top of each other. If you look closely enough you can see the entire name Alaric in the symbols.

03-29-2005, 05:57 PM
haha! Hello Richard! Good to see you here. I hope you will manage to finish all 5d.. hard work is to be done here:) I'm with you. For now you got great sketches, and nice ideas.. and more to come...

So I'm waiting for your next move:thumbsup:

03-29-2005, 06:16 PM
hey hey, its great to see you too man. I love that so many from the last challenge are back in this. Should be fun! :)

Here is a very rough color test of the scene I have in mind. I kept it very loose and rough because I needed to do single image that are more refined that I will post here when I finish.

03-29-2005, 06:46 PM
Very interesting! I am getting case ideas here. I am especially liking the development of the "war blades"!

The strands of hair on cylee are a great idea and a great detail.

Your getting a good start.

A second uncolored sketch more for posing purposes.

03-29-2005, 08:41 PM
Ooh.. another challenge! You see lava and minions.. I see many long nights of clicking through entry after entry.. :)

Great start so far.. can't wait to see where you go from here.

The Female Vampire, Matilda (Succubus-lust daemon). Powerful and clever is the queen of lust, who's followers alone are mighty but it is death, Thanatos, that she serves.

03-29-2005, 08:57 PM

Here is a basic concept of the gluttonous giant in my scene. One of Deaths Servents. Not depicted is going to be a warhammer.

03-30-2005, 03:08 AM
yo dude! Nice concepts u have there! :D Looks to be a "hot" piece of work! :D

03-30-2005, 06:34 AM
Hi, great to see you in this challenge. Sketches looking great and I like the composition of the overall concept sketch. Can't wait to see this one progressing. Good luck! :bounce: Claireabella

03-30-2005, 03:30 PM
Thanks Ravendsg and Claireabella, I am working on Mankind, the murderer now... His chains are bizzarre to draw, but will be cool in 3D with field of view blurring effects. :)

03-30-2005, 06:26 PM

Mankind - Right hand of the lord of Death - Thanatos. He is known as the skinner of man...

03-30-2005, 06:47 PM
that concept really rocks man!...and theres quaite a lot of character over there... i love ur cncept designing style.. keep up the good works man, and jump on the 3d dimantion as soon as u can... i cant wait to c all these beings in 3D!! :bounce: :deal:

03-30-2005, 07:53 PM

03-30-2005, 07:56 PM
Great sketches! Really cool stuff.. :)

As everyone else has said.. I can't wait to see it all in 3D.. :D :wip:

03-30-2005, 08:08 PM
cool characters....very wicked topic I agree lots of brillient ideas floating around :)

03-30-2005, 08:20 PM
Wow these are fabulous. And these are only the sketches?

03-30-2005, 09:44 PM
I see a story of a High Magus born of a halfling lineage. A wise student whom had found a fragment of an ancient relic which granted him forbidden knowlege. This Magus studied for over 60 years there after scheming of a way of finding other fragments. Through his dark arts on his final day of life his master plan was put into effect. As the infamous cloaked grim arrived to sever his soul from the toils of mortality. In that second he did it uttered the word, stabbed with a great stored amount of Ki (Chi) Force he destroyed Grim. Thereby, granting him powers eternally more rewarding than his wildest ponderance. Retrieving the fragment in his new form he searches across universes and dimensions seeking the all fragments of the artifact... bringing death and suffering in the form of a plague of his followers. In each new world there are those of that kind whom worship the harbinger of doom. The three trooth sayers of this war party are the blind, deaf, mute slaves he keeps at his sides. His gladiators Mankind, Matilda and Gutter bend the hordes of darkness everlasting clearing away to the next conquest.

03-30-2005, 10:39 PM
Concepts are looking great. Last challenge you have a video game feel to your entry, now this challenge you hava comci book feel; just something i noticed.

03-30-2005, 10:40 PM
Wild concept Richard and a full book of sketches......doing real well, keep it coming....I love the passion you have.....:arteest:

03-30-2005, 10:43 PM
Hi Richard,
Your sketching style is nice and varied and the sketches themselves look very good. Looking forward to this in 3d

03-30-2005, 11:30 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1112225416_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1112225416_large.jpg)

I decided I wanted a more femine Cylee so I redid her. I posed her as closely to the way I envision the standing Cylee from the sketch.

03-31-2005, 03:48 PM
Great start! ... and I see you're doing both challenges - you're crazy man, no sleep this time either, right? :) I wish you much look and will follow both your threads cheering

03-31-2005, 07:50 PM
Just a note. I have begun 3D work on the Pale Horse of Death. I finished my first prototype model. But I am not happy with parts of it near the tusks near the mouth and going to rework it. I will post it up anyway. Even if its a flop.

03-31-2005, 08:19 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1112300375_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1112300375_large.jpg)

This is my first go at it. This will be one of the heads under the cloaks in the sea of followers trailing behind Death and his Gladiators.

03-31-2005, 08:26 PM
I like it, but I see one problem with it... the top part is quite agressive, and bottom part is too peaceful:) It doesn't work good together in my opinion.

03-31-2005, 08:28 PM
Hey Richard ,
I like the model , once you get the eyes and some teeth it will look nice.. or baad which is good.

03-31-2005, 08:38 PM
I like it, but I see one problem with it... the top part is quite agressive, and bottom part is too peaceful:) It doesn't work good together in my opinion.

Actually, I agree completely. Hence the reason it won't work for the creature. But a minion...

03-31-2005, 09:05 PM
hello Richard!...man awsome sketches! .....altought the model...im sure its just a rough one :) !
keep those vertices rolling dude!:bounce:

This is not quite finished. I have more spikes to add. More surface to airbrush and it still lacks mandibles and horns/antelers. I am pleased with its progress so far.

PS. the previous render is just a minion. Completely seperate model. I found it easier to just start over.

04-01-2005, 12:20 AM
Wow! Very cool.. nice work! That's definitely a face that only a mother could love.. heh heh.. :buttrock:

04-01-2005, 12:25 AM
Wow! ... very nice modeling .... just waiting to see this faces with their bodies ...good luck!!

04-01-2005, 01:34 AM
I am working on the last parts of the face then I will get on the body. I am seeing some serious chains and skulls and stuff hanging from the saddle... hmmm

04-01-2005, 02:14 AM
Looking good richard. What are you using to get the details like the spikes? ZBrush?

04-01-2005, 02:27 AM
Hi Richard,

It is another nice looking bad guy, I think I would give him a rougher texture though. Great job :)

04-01-2005, 03:10 AM
ace4016 - Yes I am using Zbrush and a 12x12 Wacom tablet... worth every penny. The two together are amazing as if each didn't carry its own merit. I would recommend both to any artist.

mmoir - Thanks for the c n c. This is only the beginning. I am still refining the head adornments then I am going to get back to texture mapping.

More to come...

04-01-2005, 05:27 AM
thats awesome Richard ...... any tips from you can only improve my work.

04-01-2005, 05:53 AM
As always, incredible project, but really interesting... best wishes for you Richard

04-01-2005, 06:58 AM
Hey Richard Looking good dude! I love this stuff! Can't wait too see more...

04-01-2005, 07:56 AM
Nice sketches!
I think you are a genius mind. The texturing looks so difficult.
I'll wait for your models.

Ok here is a small texture update. I had some company over tonight and it distracted me from diving back into the model much more. I will get more back on that tommorow. Thanks for the support. See ya on the flip side.

04-01-2005, 12:40 PM
cool head, are u using displacement for the horns?

I think the specular should be reduced a bit more

btw dude.. do u know that 1 of your characters HAS to be human? I didn't see them in your sketches - just wondering, in case u didn't know

04-01-2005, 06:37 PM
Thanatos is human. Evil wizard gone immortal after killing death.. :) Also the hooded minions many are human. Mankind is formerly human as was Gutter, Matilda is a former elf, and Cylee well she's synthetic. ;)

04-01-2005, 09:07 PM
Oh yeah and I forgot to mention. I am not using displacement for the horns. Those are modeled.

04-02-2005, 09:44 AM
Badass stuff DMW.. very detailed .. very cool head. :buttrock: Keep going like that!!! :bounce:

04-02-2005, 10:56 AM
Nice update. I think you should make more detailed texture.

04-02-2005, 07:27 PM
Yeah I am working right now back on the modeling some more before I get back into the texture... I will be taking the texture into photoshop for advanced editing whereas for now I am just surface painting in Zbrush.

I saw Sin City last night... man was that movie bad @$$!

04-02-2005, 11:34 PM

Still have alot to do with the textures and the eyes are just place holders for now. I am adjusting the antlers/horns trying to get the sizing just right. So far though I am happy. Only 1.6 million polys for the head...

04-03-2005, 12:14 AM
Only 1.6 million polys for the head...

Yea....right, only 1.6 mill. Keep it up richard (maybe not the poly count though :D ).

04-03-2005, 12:32 AM
 Oops!
I opened the thread and my 5 yr old and 2.5 yr old nephews said "OOO thats scary!"
I think you are coming along nicely despite my nephews' opinon.:bounce:

I agree with all three of you.. it's coming along great, and it's nice and scary :D

One thing.. I can't quite tell what depth the antlers stop at, but it kinda looks like they might intersect with the neck.. just curious how the head will work with the body.

Keep going.. good stuff!! :applause:

Ok still have not touched the texture just working on the overall connections of the mandibles and antlers. More to come...

Just an early prelimaniry torso sculting. There is alot to do on it still. But its coming along nicely..

04-04-2005, 01:27 AM
well done Richard....it's coming along mr.5D........Thats some tough hide.......keep it going as I know you will Rich....:arteest:

04-04-2005, 01:32 AM
Hey Richard ,

The beast body model is looking good, keep up the good work.

04-04-2005, 01:44 AM
Hey Rich you have a very interesting style bro  Gotta love da ZBrush for helping to really bring it out. Looking forward to more.

04-04-2005, 03:11 AM
Virtuoso - Thanks man your support is always a welcoming to my day! :)

mmoir - Thank you I am hoping to get this beast done in the next day or so.

Kid Mesh - Glad you like it. Zbrush rules... Nuff said.

04-04-2005, 04:33 AM
Nice going on the body, looking pretty good. I have no critiques, yet.

Nice going on the body, looking pretty good. I have no critiques, yet.

I agree.. looking very nice. Can't wait to see that fully sculpted and with the head attached. No critiques here either..

Keep going! :wip: :wip:

Wow Richard! Glad to see you back, flying wild again

04-04-2005, 06:03 PM
ace4016 - Thanks, doing pretty well yourself.

Climax - Unfortunantly no I have not fixed my problem yet. I am just that damn stubborn. Thanks for the support. I hope the admins here respond soon... (edit: w00t problem fixed!!!)

Nekura - Working on it. Sorry for the long delays inbetween posts but I am still trying to get the hang of Zbrush... Very fun but frustrating at the same time...

jddog - I keep on keepin on... growth as an artist is what keeps me going. I love learning and these challenges inspire me to grow much more quickly than just normal daily routine.

Ravendsg - Thanks man. In the last contest I was out of my element. I am an organic artist. I spent most of my life studying things like anatomy and biology, not engineering.. Zbrush and my style will eventually fuse into something different. At the moment I am still learning so my style is only peeking through in my modeling. Hell I guess you could say you all are watching my style develop before you eyes due to learning this tool mid challenge...

overcontrast - It would appear there are several bad boy artists in here this time... I wonder which will be the baddest!

robillo - Thanks, Cylee is going to be fun. I love the female form more than all others. I like creatures next... hehe

Gunilla - Thanks, I just keep thinking about all the different things I want hanging off of this bad boys saddle & bridal. Going to be a challenge none the less... :)

04-04-2005, 06:12 PM
Hi...Richard...thats a scary torso...!...u have invented totally new muscles in there right?....:bounce:

04-04-2005, 06:20 PM
yunisirees - Actually, yes. It has a second collar bone and shoulders with two more arms, smaller arms that will come out behind the first shoulder. I will keep going. Thanks for stopping by :)

Here is a skeletal view of the netherbeast. You will notice that the biology of this creature allows for additional appendages which makes things.... interesting. More to come later in the day.

04-04-2005, 09:19 PM
That's a cool looking skeleton.. I like where it's going. Very nice!

04-04-2005, 09:36 PM
hi Richard...yes that explains it ;)!....thats one complex character..way to go :arteest::arteest:!

04-04-2005, 10:23 PM
Great stuff!

You have this wierd Moebius touch which I find very enticing.
Keep em comin

04-04-2005, 11:02 PM
Actually, the thanatos head and body are technically sketches now... I started over when I figured out more about the Zspheres. I had modeled the originals out of 3Dspheres. I thought about attaching and riggin them later. But since I learned more I decided...hell I will just lay it out completely with zspheres first then I have a posable model to airbrush the details on. I am almost finished with the new head. I like it much better than the first. I was starting to think the first one looked like a rabbid dog or something... lol. I want more a bull'ish looking cat creature, if you can imagine that. So I applogize for starting over on it again...but the final product is what counts and this is a learning process for me sooooo.... I will post up the new head soon.

Ok here is the update I promised showing the progress on the new mesh based soley on Zspberes. I have barely touched the body at the moment. I am finalizing the head and begginning work on the shoulders and back. More to come.

04-05-2005, 02:59 AM
hey there dude. had a look at your full thread.. very very skilled concepts man.. really enjoyed looking at them and the detail in them and the ideas and expressions great work. Your modeling skills arent bad at all either.. this latest addition looks great man.. compliments no crits so .. great work once again dude.. would love to see more! :) keep it up

04-05-2005, 03:58 AM
cool one, loking forevard to se him(it) all done,se you and

04-05-2005, 04:58 AM
Nice monster, add eyes to him. And I want to see the texture.

Good luck, you have many things to do.

04-05-2005, 05:22 AM
Hmmm... good way for this monster... very terrifif... I'm afraid :scream: Very good work mate

04-05-2005, 07:09 AM
Hi richard......How are the zpheres coming?I will be doing my Rudes (servants) with them then taking them to Max or maya....My brute is being done with max and some extra touches with Zbrush.....a full experiment going on for me......

Looks like you you blocked out the beast well, and now it's tweak and tweak some more time....Like a sculpture really is'nt it?Very intutive....I love the extra tool it provides us with our other apps....

Ok...keep brushing happily...:arteest:

04-05-2005, 12:22 PM
That beast just keeps getting better and better.. really coming along nicely! :applause: Keep it rockin.. :buttrock:

04-05-2005, 12:23 PM
Keep up the great work!

04-05-2005, 12:25 PM
hey, good concept, themodeling of the face of the monster is very good, i wait the modeling of the rest of his body, good work:thumbsup:

04-05-2005, 06:53 PM
Neeno - Hey man! Thanks for the uplifting words. My roots are a mixture of traditional mediums and digital mediums so I enjoy trying out new ways of mixing between them in the sketching round. There will be more... I promise.

alex.h. - Thanks, me too.. hehe! :)

SaintT - Ty, Adding eyes and the texture will come after I finish the body. But it is coming...

Lemog - Thanks, You know what "they" say.... third time is a charm... It would seem that this newest guy is the winner... now just got to finish him....Zbrush allows me to sketch in 3D now... that is worth its weight in gold...hehe... Zbrush is now your god... bow down and bring it sacrifices... that should be someones entry... ;)

Virtuoso - Zspheres are both fun and bizzare all at the same second. I am still trying to figure out how to attach other tools to each other.. And keeping the skin smooth...without a 3.4 million poly result... I cannot wait to see what you think up this time... hehe ;) Thanks for the support as always.

Nekura - Thanks bro. Working on the torso and appendages now. :wip:

Vinshia - Thanks babe! :) Sorry for scaring your nephew...:twisted:

MDN67 - Thanks man. Concept art is sooo important to my style. I sketch fast with loose lines to visualize all the possibilities that could arrise then when it comes to modeling after studying the sketch. Normally I would stare at it the entire time... one this last update creature I barely referred to it and freed my mind of the inhibitions of what I drew... wallah, it comes out the way I envisioned in my mind.. but all three of the stages are important for the final to be its best. Keep in mind your first idea may not always be your best... 3 sketch rule in full effect!

04-05-2005, 07:38 PM
Looking nice, I just got Zbrush my self last night. I'm very excited about using it, I really like the free form modeling and the ability to paint on to the model. Are you going to use Zbrush for the entire companions or are you just using to make Displacement and Bump map to use in another app.

Hopefully it wouldn't be to much of a hassle to imports the Displacement and Bump maps into LW.

04-05-2005, 10:26 PM
I plan on doing most if not all of the modeling for this in Zbrush. The way I see it the other programs have found their places... and this has found its place. Basically, Zbrush is for organic modeling. I will still use a tradional 3D package for compositing the elements for final gathering and rendering...and even some non-organic modeling... Since this entry has soooo much organics... I will be using it predominantly. Happy Zbrushing...

Ok I have the face complete and the muscle and main boning surface displacement done. Next will come spikes and further defining his bone plates. I have been thinking about the color scheme for this big guy and I think I am going to move away from the green and go for a more browns, reds, blacks and tans. What do you think?

04-05-2005, 10:46 PM
Hi Richard....i think the new color scheme will suit the beast more!...good work!:)

04-05-2005, 10:49 PM
Real nice Richard....I like the strong hind quarters and limbs .......very beefy and well put together.....

Taste thing here................I would probably give him a touch more muscle or girth on the upper back..a bit of a hunchback....thicker still than what you have.....not too much, but some.....a taste thing really.....Nice job,I like what I see....

04-05-2005, 11:34 PM

Per Virtuoso's suggestion.. Beefier hunch back style... What do you think... Has he been eating his Weaties Box cover star...?

04-06-2005, 12:12 AM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1112746336_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1112746336_large.jpg)

Oh yeah he definantly ate his Weaties Box Cover Star!!!

04-06-2005, 12:20 AM
Great work! It's getting better and better. I would add more defined wrinkles in the areas of joints and visible muscles, adn would make this cellular bump less visible, but perhaps with bigger "cells". I hope that you get me:)

Keep your usual great progress up! I'm waiting for more

04-06-2005, 12:55 AM
Wow.. very nice progress on the muscles. I think the 'beefier' look definitely suits him. It seems he just ate a Wheaties box cover team. ;)

Anyhow, it's coming along great! Keep going!! :wip: :wip:

04-06-2005, 01:07 AM
I love it! He looks big mean and not only eats his Wheaties cover team but all the Chunky Soup ad persons too.

Sooooo Can I keep him? Pleeeeaaaasssse! Really he wont take up much room.

04-06-2005, 07:10 AM
Hehe, chunky... anyway more to come tommorow.. Glad you all like the beefier beast! :)

Working on the details of the front arms. Still have more to do but I figured I would post some progress.

04-06-2005, 07:07 PM
looking great mate, wait wait to see how you tackle texturing

04-07-2005, 08:44 AM
I can't wait to see it with the textures either.. this beast is really coming along fantastic. Keep the pen to the tablet! :wip:

04-07-2005, 09:03 AM
Very nice process to follow... outstanding model

04-07-2005, 08:04 PM
Your modeling work is awesome...Can't wait to see it all come together! Keep up the great work!

04-07-2005, 09:02 PM
Hi ||) |V| |^|, 'carproof' creature mate:thumbsup:
Keep it coming!

04-07-2005, 09:09 PM
Hey mate..but what a nice work look here?? wow nice concept paint and nice model..and specially I like your presentation of this pic!!

Gooood luck:thumbsup:

04-07-2005, 10:13 PM
eddieellis - Thanks, The texturing on this will go in three rounds. Round one will be painting the base in Zbrush, then I will bring the exported texture to photoshop for touchups, then I will bring it into 3Dstudio max for advanced shader options. Going to be fun with all these spikes...

Nekura - Thanks, yeah Zbrush eats this wacom up and loves every minute of it... so do I..

Lemog - It took me 3 trys to get what I wanted but in the end I think its all I hoped...now to make it more so than even that... that is the trick... time... I don't know if I am going to make the finishing line for this challenge with as much details as I want to add to this.. mebe I will submit it to expose when its done if I don't make the M & S deadline.

rynomyte - Like I said to lemog, I don't want to short change this and hurry through and make mistakes so I am just taking my time and refining this at the one click per 2 minutes poly count... if you know what I mean...

DaddyMack - hehe, yeah thats one way of putting it.. I cannot wait to see this finished myself :)

alexfalchi - Thanks, It usually takes me a few images to get into my theme, but once I find it... its on... I am glad you like the presentation as well as the work in it. :)

Ok I am posting an update now... still more work to do on the hind quarters and skin all around. The front arms & head are the only things that I am barely touching anymore.. Little tweaks all around for now...

04-07-2005, 10:15 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1112912145_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1112912145_large.jpg)

Just a quick update on where I am at... I am focusing on the backside and legs now for a bit. Then I will go back into the chest and back, then the secondary arms and shoulders before texturing.. Thanks for the support. I hope you enjoy the update.

04-07-2005, 10:16 PM
Nice monster man!! i like the face and the big hands!! very good!!!:buttrock:

04-07-2005, 10:23 PM
amazing work! and probably amazing number of polys:) Keep it up!

04-07-2005, 10:32 PM
Ho sure I enjoy this update, is very strong now:thumbsup: more more.

04-07-2005, 10:34 PM
amazing work! and probably amazing number of polys:) Keep it up!

Hey arturro for this I really like ZB .... with alot number of polys is very fast:)
see you mate!!

04-08-2005, 12:42 AM
Wow Richard! How many characters are u bringing into 3D this time? lots of work and very well done, you are a machine! :scream:

04-08-2005, 03:43 AM
Hey Richard

The Nether Beast is looking pretty menacing , the textures are going to look good on this. I was thinking the head could be a little bigger but thats just my opinion.

04-08-2005, 03:43 AM
Progressing very well I see. I'll bet the poly count is huge right now..
I can't wait to see what you do with the next character.. :wip: :wip:

04-08-2005, 05:27 AM
:bounce: Hi! Richard.:bounce:
:bounce: very great model. :) I love detail on model. Good luck.:bounce:

04-08-2005, 06:10 AM
I like your style, the concept and detailed model are great.
Good luck:thumbsup:

04-08-2005, 08:25 AM
Thanks for the extra "Hunch"....richard.........Looking sharp.....Beefy beast and well done......design is fierce.....I would like him to block for me anytime ......You would never get tackled......;)

Doing really well, and I really love to see polys fly....... Keep doing so......:arteest:

04-08-2005, 01:27 PM
Wow! great progress since I last checked in. Great details on the back and tail, looks awesome...Keep up the great work.

04-08-2005, 02:01 PM
VERY intriguing, man. I like your characters. Some criticism: the last monster's nose is turned in wrong angle. The forward part of the nose is should be lower, that back part. It cuold make character more evil and angry. (it is just a sujestion)

Good luck.

04-08-2005, 08:23 PM
Hey excellent job on the Zbrushing! Very cool shape, can't wait to see more.

04-08-2005, 08:44 PM
Hi buddy. Great stuff so far......... :applause: Claireabella

04-08-2005, 10:14 PM
Nice work, wouldn't want to come face to face with one of those.

04-09-2005, 01:09 AM
Wow, I am tired... sorry for no updates so far today... I just got back from a 2hr drive distance away where I was teaching the Coaches of the Miami Dolphins how to make playbooks using Pagemaker... (*insert random pagemaker joke here)... Its a great account but I got like 30 minutes notice to get n the car and start driving to Miami... It was pretty funny I am sitting there with one coach when others walk in and then the players and they are all talking about normal football stuff you know, but your the computer geek who knows nothing about football, or even who the people are... except like Dan Marino...lol... anyway... I promise that the next update is going to be really big to make up for lost time...

PS. I will get to personal replies later on after I unwind from the stresses of a teaching gig... as a side note the coach gave me a $125 cuban cigar to smoke with him, of which I saved part of to go with a glass of wine after dinner... What a day...

04-09-2005, 01:25 AM
whoa!, I really dig the head :), I should start learning z-brush I guess ;) the rest of the body is awesome as well ^^. keep going

04-09-2005, 05:21 AM
Hey Richard. Your models are looking great. Your ZBrush skill are getting better by the minute. Good luck.

04-09-2005, 06:10 PM
mecman - thanks man, I decided to change the hands from claws in the front to oversized hands. I was thinking about damage and how much a fist that size would, keeping the claws on the secondary arms behind. Glad you like it, there will be much more to come...

arturro - Thanks man yeah there is an computer lagging amount of polys in work there. It has 7 subdivisions 8 steps...

alexfalchi - Thanks m8. Each of those spikes is hand pulled not some random noise algorithm... And yes I love Zbrush for this... :)

Climax - A few...lol...thanks... yeah but I need a good oil bath... ;) (bless the maker)

mmoir - I had wondered on the size of the head, but When I enlarged it, it made the rest of the body's proportions look smaller which actually in the end made it look less menacing... But I totally understand why you would think that as I did as well. And the texturing on this is going to be soooo fun...hehe...Anyway, thanks for the support man..

Nekura - can't even finish one before you are trying to get another out of me... sounds familiar...lol

sumawut sookvamdee - Thanks man thats one colorful & animated post you left for me... glad you like this bad boy... I think they should start having things like best monster, best character, best hero, best villian, best scenery instead of just yea/nea type voting... I don't know it could be fun..

Maxter - Thanks, thats one heck of a compliment.. I will strive to deserve it...

Virtuoso - Thanks, always happy to see you back here... sometimes you vanish into your labooooratory and don'ta com outta for daysa!

rynomyte - Sweet, fun fun fun, more, more, more, 1 million 1 2 million 2 3 million 3 4 million 4...

suk-grigorij - Thanks for the suggestion... when the mouth is closed you are correct it does infact look that way. If you have ever looked at a dog when it growls and snarls their noses kinda fold in and the bottom comes out farther than the top. I was just kinda thinking about that when I did it. In this light do you still think it is wrong? If so let me know. Thanks for your time.

mmbenya - Thanks it has been some progress. Very fun and seeing you all here is my reward...

Claireabella - Thanks darlin. Glad you like the progress. Always a pleasure to see you in a challenge...

arlutik - I actually did in a dream... lets just say... running doesn't help much... lol

nix0r - Thanks dude, yes I think any artist who can think about sculpture should learn this program... to me its kinda like the photoshop of 3D. I love photoshop by the way and as fantastic as Zbrush is still use them both together not replace one with the other.. :)

SNoWs - It is such a fun program to use that its almost like working with a real medium minus the mess.. This is sooo sweet... Thanks for the support...

Wow thanks to all of you for the overwhelming replies... to me this is the reward I enter these challenges for... C n C... it is the part the forces you to grow as an artist... thank you.

04-09-2005, 10:12 PM
Virtuoso - Thanks, always happy to see you back here... sometimes you vanish into your labooooratory and don'ta com outta for daysa!

Sometimes I peek out just to say hi..........Than head right back in there......Ok back i go......:wip:

04-10-2005, 01:26 PM
Nice modeling dude. Keep goiing. Good luck.

04-10-2005, 06:11 PM
not much to say.........just amazing.......waiting to see more :buttrock:

04-10-2005, 06:21 PM
dude, that beast looks cool

04-10-2005, 08:42 PM
very nice update.. great work on the hands/limbs...

I'll be back for more after you've finished with the back legs

04-11-2005, 12:12 AM
Virtuoso - hehe, I will be doing my rounds to see what you've been cooking here in a minute... :)

crapple - Thanks.. Glad you like it... the next update is almost here...

rodia - :) Not much to say but...thanks!!!

Squibbit - Thanks man... I appreciate the words of support! :)

Versiden - Thanks.. This creature has been the most fun I have ever had modeling something before... As a result I have been taking my time and nit picking every poxol of it...

04-11-2005, 12:23 AM
we neeeeeeed more updates :D. Just curious m8.. how long have you been using z-brush? I've seen some amazing stuff done with the use of that prgram :), but as a poor student I can just watch

04-11-2005, 12:37 AM
that beast is great ||) |V| |^|, loking in later to se it finisht. see you and

04-11-2005, 12:59 AM
I actually played with the old zbrush demo which was fun, but until the day I posted the last of my sketches is the first day I started using Zbrush... So I guess its almost a week now...

Thanks man I am uploading that update now..

04-11-2005, 01:01 AM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1113181272_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6844/6844_1113181272_large.jpg)

Ok guys n gals sorry for the delay but I wanted to put alot of detail in to the hyde of this creature.. I still have alot of little tweaking to do, C n C welcomed.. because after this comes texturing if there are no corrections to the model beyond minor tweaks... Hope you enjoy the update...

04-11-2005, 01:09 AM
That's a mean lookin' machine :). Just a week and a bit of demo experience? That's awesome :D. His legs look huge, I have little to crit.. only thing I can come up with is a personal opinion :) Maybe you could give him a bit 'o nails on the hands? The ones on the legs are grand :d, but I'd like some scratchers on the hands as well, but not too big. Again : just personal stuff, he looks great.

04-11-2005, 01:20 AM
The inner forelegs look a bit plain compared to the rest, and the shoulders, although I am sure you're not finished. Looking good, can't wait for more. Just make sure you have time to finsih the other characters:thumbsup: .

04-11-2005, 02:30 AM
cool character but i have 2 things i want to point out... his hind legs seem curved its alright if its intentional but just gives the idea that he doesnt have a skeleton, and the front arms seem too big ... if you take a look at monkies whom have larger hands to support thier weight on they still fit some kind of proportion. the size of your creature's hands just seem out of wack right now!

i love the work you are doing keep it up!

04-11-2005, 03:37 AM
I like the textured look the skin is getting.. it's almost reptilian. I see what Slav means about the hind legs looking somewhat curved. Now, I do understand that there are a number of bones and joints in the creature's hind legs (more than would normally be found in an animal), but it's an otherworldly beast.. so I wouldn't expect it to resemble an animal you would find running around somewhere. All that to say, yes, they do look a bit curved.. but perhaps seeing the creature in motion (running) or in a different pose would change that 'curved' look into something else entirely.

All in all, really nice progress! Keep on it.. :buttrock:

04-11-2005, 04:31 AM
Ok Richard....nice continued progress.......As of now a couple tweaks I could suggest, really nit-picks.....I would give the nack feet themselves a bit more size.....just a touch,no big deal.....The other thing that I think would look real interesting would be to give the back more of a slope......a valley as it goes from the hunched area to the hind quarters.......Really a taste thing.....But you sure have got a lot done, ans done quite well.......Textures.......you can probably taste them, you are so close now......Keep up the herculean effort......:arteest:

04-11-2005, 09:07 AM
Wow more details look here!! nice work really...tell me please you make composition in ZBrush for background??

welll gooood work mate:bounce:

04-11-2005, 12:03 PM
WOW......... what a good concept & modelling

04-11-2005, 04:48 PM
You said: "...when the mouth is closed you are correct it does infact look that way. If you have ever looked at a dog when it growls and snarls their noses kinda fold in and the bottom comes out farther than the top..." Yep, I guess You are right about dogs. But Your creature is not a dog. Well I think, you deside for yourself what is better. It's hard to discuss suck things with ocean between us. Post a closer look to the head with mouth closed and opened (view from left or right) and image of mesh. Then I'll try to help you.

Good Luck.

I encourage you to look at reference when sculpting the anatomy of your creature. Right now he looks very soft, without bone or muscle structure. I can see the detail you are trying to achieve with zbrush, but I think if you tightened up his underlying anatomy more, it would read better.

04-11-2005, 05:36 PM
That's a rocky creature u got.. it rocks. Cool

04-13-2005, 06:56 PM
No update?? no up? no up??!!...well i'm wait!!

04-14-2005, 09:34 AM
Yes, update please.. come on.. don't keep us in suspense too long! :)

04-14-2005, 11:21 AM
heya Richard

I think the forearms are very well done, it's not over the top, and details are there where it's needed, I can clearly makeout the muscle groups in the forearm.

but the hind legs style just don't compliment the front. It seems as though it was done differently, it just doesn't seem to 'mesh' or it belongs to a different beast (if u know what i mean)

04-14-2005, 02:19 PM
Hey Richard! This is coming on great, the creature is fine  Is there textures on the way? It's update time....

04-14-2005, 02:53 PM
Love the extra details!
Gonna render your entry in ZB?
Keep em comin

04-15-2005, 05:30 PM
Hey everyone I am back with some updates today... Sorry for the delay but as most US citizens know its been tax time.... so I have been a bit preoccupied... But I am back in full force. I have attempted to address the issues raised by you all so I hope these updates work so I can begin the texturing...

nix0r - Ok I have been thinking about it but I wanted the forelimbs to be like a giant ape crossed with a hippo's proportions... The second set of limbs has claws on them and are the limbs that when this beast stands up fully would be eye level to a human at the claw reach. Unless I get a lot of responses telling me go with claws regardless of my plan.. I will keep the front ones fingers.. but thanks for the input I did consider it originally in the sketch but changed it mid course due to taste..

ace4016 - Correct the back, shoulders and stomach are last on the list because of the detail level I wanted in the limbs.. But the update I am going to post has some refinements the rest I plan on doing with surface texturing vs modeling...

Slav - I checked it rechecked it and finally understood what you saw.. It is an optical illusion. I am posting up the newest image with multiple angles so you can see that is just a wide stance not infact arc'd.. As for the forelimbs they are oversized that way on purpose to design.. And just fyi, I have used more than references, I use anatomy knowledge which comes from all the things the anatomy courses teach...Thanks for the input..

Nekura - You hit the nail on the head it was just the posted angle.. I had to stare at the photo I posted to even see the problem because the model when looked at from all angles did not seem "curved" anyway, thanks I am posting up an update with some new angles to see for yourself.

Virtuoso - Ok the Head and Rear Claws are now enlarged slightly I hope this fixes the issues. I also did change the position slightly to show more arch in the lower back. Tell me if this is what you meant... as always thanks for the support...

alexfalchi - nah the background is done in Photoshop CS, I have been using photoshop since the old days soo... Thanks for the compliments... I hope you like the newest updates.

manikantkujur - thanks, Its been fun and knowing people like it makes it even more so...

suk-grigorij - I will post up that in the near future for now I am still working on getting the legs issue settled.

Rook - Actually I did several other sketches which were rough to detail out the anatomy in different positions the anatomy is fine. The problem I ran into is a lack of rings ie faces to edit in the legs... Something I did early on must have set a low number there so I have been scrambling to try to refine it with no luck... I can basically just work with what I have at this point and maybe tweak it a bit later by texture... Zbrush rocks... but its still new to me. I haven't figured out how to add selective topolgy refinement.

RealCapri - Thanks. hehe yeah I just cannot wait till I get to texture it.. :)

Versiden - Yep I agree, hence why my update will show a drastic step backward due to lack of topology. I have smoothed the mesh out on 6 levels then re-drew the muscle groups then bone plating but very simple due to lack of refinement... Kinda heartbreaking to get this far into a model and just realize you cannot refine an area more...

Gunilla - Yeah now that my taxes are filled I am back on the job... lots o receipts to go through for deductions... way to many...lol... I am hoping provided I don't get alot of criticism on this next update will be on the textures otherwise it will be back to the modeling block....again....

Kanga - I have really been thinking about it but I have yet to figure out how to combine two different zsphere objects together so I had planned on doing the final render from 3D Studio.. Any suggestions?

Ok thanks everyone again for the constructive crits and compliments as they are soo needed... as you know when you stare at and object so you can see an inch between vertices you need someone else to stand back and look at it... :) Now to post that update....

Looking awesome, mate. Incredible amount of details. The spike is gone.

My M&S http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=224891&page=1&pp=20

04-15-2005, 06:15 PM
He seems very balanced, so he shouldnt have amy problem throwing his weight around.

Will he be ramming things with his head? If he is then a thicker more covering plated would be needed on his head. Also, look at the pachycephalosaurs vertebrae.

I think that he is awesome and I excited to see more.:bounce:

04-15-2005, 07:50 PM
Wow.. such an amazing level of detail in him. I love the little wrinkles at the knuckle bends and the points where the claws connect to the fingers/toes. Not to mention all the various bumps and ridges all over the skin. Very nice!

04-15-2005, 07:52 PM
looking sweet my friend looking forward to seeing some texturing

04-15-2005, 10:47 PM
So then I guess if there are no objections... I will begin texturing tonight!

Damn, man, I'd hate to come across that thing in a well lit alley. I'd rather be chomped real quick in a dark one. Good job with the detail. I can almost hear a deep grumbling growl...

04-18-2005, 03:09 PM
Wicked looking beast you got there. :)

Sorry guys n gals but I got a case of the flu and have been flat on my back for a few days and still coughing to hard to keep my hand steady enough to paint... I hope I feel well enough soon to continue.. but at this point this could force me to drop out of the challenge... not sure.... will let you know.

04-20-2005, 04:26 AM
hope you feel better mate... its a shame this would have been a great peice.. but as long as you are in good health thats the main thing.. hope it all works out

04-20-2005, 04:33 AM
Sorry to hear that. It's coming close to the "sick" season for me too, when I start getting sicknesses theat tend to force me to stay in bed (e.g. pnemonia, strep, mono....im kind of proud of the mono one though:D ). Hope you feel better, and hope you don't have to drop out; but more importantly, yuor health. Take it easy, and you'll be better in no time.

Ok I am still sick as a dog...but with the help of some good ole fashin flu/cough medicine I got a few hours of airbrushing of the preliminary texturing for this beast! It has a long way to go before completion...but its a start...

Working on his shader... I want him to look kinda wet or almost like its sweaty.. Tiny speculars with some anistropy. Still sick but 2nd day of medicine is better than the first... mebe I can get this guy finished after all soon...

04-22-2005, 08:19 AM
Hey! Very nice start on the texture. I like your idea of the skin having a 'wet' look.. that should suit the beast quite well. :)

Glad to hear you're feeling better.. keep at it!! :buttrock:

04-22-2005, 09:16 AM

Ok I have added a bit more detail to Pain's texture. This is hopefully the last day of my cold.. but with only 25 days left... I feel under the gun to get stuff done..

Good detail, nice model, keep it up!

Good luck!

04-24-2005, 02:24 AM
Ah, an update! :)

I love how the hind legs have an armor plated look to them. The skin overall looks very coarse and tough. Excellent detail! He's progressed very nicely.

Time is running short.. better kick that cold quick!

04-24-2005, 06:08 PM
Hey Richard, how are you doing?
I saw you have donne a lot of work (in both entries, 2D and 3D).
Nice and cool concept Richard.
Cool designs for your characters. And a lot of details.
I imagine the followers behind Thanatos marchings slowly with a sad accompaniment song (maybe a chorus?).
Really cool!
Nasty flu. How are you feeling now? are you better now? You have a lot of work to do.
Wish you lot of health and workpower.

Alaric No update mate?? we wait more!!

04-29-2005, 05:15 PM
With 19 days left... I think I am just going to forget about the rest of this challenge.. I have just been sick for too many days in too short of a challenge.. I really hope they make the next one longer like the last one.. because I don't like being rushed at something like this. The amount of details I put on this creature is the same I want to put in everything else that I do. I will finish this art piece just not in time for this challenge to end.. I will update here until its over at which time I will put it in WIP topic for critique.. I am sorry all but with the flu... I just haven't been able to put much effort into it over the last two weeks. Again I appreciate all of the support and as much as it kills me to leave this unfinished for the challenge... I must.

04-29-2005, 05:17 PM
Very nice model. Love the texture.

04-29-2005, 09:41 PM
Sorry to hear that, Richard  ; I'm kinda getting to that state as well (hopefully the next Challenge will be 3 months and not 2), but I'll keep working on mine till the end as well.

04-30-2005, 09:08 AM
yep I'm sorry to heard that... your monster is really impressive... ... for a next time or you will find the force to finish ? ....

04-30-2005, 05:48 PM
I'm sorry to hear that Richard.. please do make sure you finish this piece eventually, as I really am anxious to see the full concept in 3D. Like you said, hopefully the next competition is a bit longer..

04-30-2005, 08:17 PM
I hope you will be better, sad news to hear about your health problems. I hope you can somehow finish it...Keep it up man! Your work is too good!
