vincent guibert has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: My best friend is 50 years older than me (

Maybe my last image post. I think I've finished it. Anyway Comment are always welcome and maybe I'll change something. I thank everybody in the challenge and have been really happy to participate at what was my first challenge.
Good luck for everybody. I'll stay in the challenge but just as a viewer.

On next posts I tell some words on the story and some on the artistic intentions.

I edit the post to add stroy on the 1st page : so

some words on story :

First I forgot the title. It's no good in the challenge page. So it's : "My best friend is 50 years older than me"

I wanted to make a master and servant where the fact to serve someone can be something happy. I also wanteed to show that the master can made some effort for his servant, maybe much that him.

So finally I decided the story about a little girl living in a huge old house with servant... This little girl has a servant who specially take care of her and her "reclamations".

This servant was a very traditionnal guy with many principles of life. Normally he's a little severe. But he has been touch by this little girl so cute and serve her is something he loves so he can be more decontracted in some moments. For him, serve this girl is the best job of his life, it's a happy thing to serve.

For the girl I just wanted to show the naive aspect of the fact to be the master; She's the master, she had all she wants but does she know the servant is paied for it ?? For her, he's just a friend, her best friend. Someone to play with.

Action : When the servant shout there were ice cream for her, the little girl (our master) was so happy to have such a friend that she run as fast as she can, disturbing all the house, to jump and make him the biggest calin she can. The servant was surprised, emu and amused by this action. Never mind for the mess...

03 March 2005, 05:04 PM (

Ok here's the idea. A very big servant in a rch falimy. he have to be here for the little girl of the family. there like them each other. It's more a picture about innocene (for the girl) and pleasure to serve someone (for the.. servant).

03 March 2005, 05:05 PM
this sounds like a cool concept. ur a good 3d artist to with nifty ideas so im keen to see what u come up with

good luck

03 March 2005, 05:10 PM
thanks tilite. I just hope i'll got the time to make what I want. I often do rough things but there are so much great artist in the comp thaht I must go higher in my work. And I don't have so much time.

03 March 2005, 05:13 PM (

Here's a new sketch of the servant. There are again many things to think about. Hope I'll be able to put a start of modeling in several hours.

03 March 2005, 05:19 PM
your right u dont have much time. the servant... he looke like a very 'interesting' kinda guy. have u got a sketch of the sceen? how many characters are u going to have showing? what are the chances of u getting a extremly rough almost diagramatic sketch up in the next half hour?

lol to many Q's lol

03 March 2005, 05:32 PM
Now lets flesh those ideas out. Looking forward to seeing more.

04 April 2005, 04:36 PM (

And the servant has change another time. The 1st sketch was ok for me at first but afterall it was very very near of an old character I made. So I wanna try another. The 2nd one was....uurghh. At first I found it not bad. And I tried to model it but...then it didn't work.
One reason : it wasn't me, my style. It was too classic, too normal. I always do bizarre people, unproportionnal character. These one.. I like it one hour and when I saw it later I hate it.

So here's the 3rd attempt. More "illogical" but not sure it's the good one. If it doesn't work, I stop. But I'm optimist. With some amelioration it could be ok.

As he's not eiher a big/strong guy but a very thin one, the aim of the picture change. And now he doesn't carry the girl but he can crouch for a kiss or maybe he stay as on the picture and the little girl jump to his neck or bring his leg between his arms.

Comment and :)

04 April 2005, 06:22 PM (

So I choose the last version to begn anew (and better) modeling. I'm pretty happy of it. Of course he has no head for the moment, but it's the next step. On the body I have to work on the pelvis and the longer of the arms. The suit will be more detailled.

Wait for commentary. Good luck at all.

04 April 2005, 07:51 PM
i like it. very nice design.

04 April 2005, 08:32 AM
haha this is cool, im so glad u changed ur design this is such a playgul character he is great.

im impressed... keet it commin

04 April 2005, 09:02 AM
Nice caricature!!! Waiting for the head....
good luck!!!

04 April 2005, 08:49 PM (

Well. Working on the head. Not a real success for the moment. Anyway I think I will remade it using this one as an example for volume.
As usual, comments are aprreciated.

04 April 2005, 10:11 PM
great body on that figure, maby some tweaks on head, its almost there, only the last dot over the i is needed, cheking in later, see you and

04 April 2005, 11:53 AM (

As I have to rework the head, I have made a new, better concept. Hope I 'll be able to model it (modeling is a really hard stuff for me :)

04 April 2005, 09:55 PM (

After several attempt I found a design that feet me and I nearly success to model it. It's cool. hope you'll enjoy it.

04 April 2005, 10:20 PM
Wow authentic,
I'm impressed with your style. "Helloween" as for me:) but I like it!
Wish you good luck with it! Believe you'll come to finish with it - shoud be good illustration, man!

04 April 2005, 08:30 AM
Now this guy has personality! looking good - jez

04 April 2005, 09:54 AM
this is cool
i have only two crits. i would like to see abit more in shape in the nose. even only a slight dip. as it is it just looks a little too begginer. and the eyes... are u able to blend the skin around the eye back into the face?

great work keep going

04 April 2005, 11:43 AM
Thanks all for your comments.

For the eye I have not yet decided what to do with. Some like it in this form, others not... For the moment, no changement. I still have some work on him : make him older with some wrinkles, add some eyebrow....

Good luck for those who make the challenge.

04 April 2005, 12:13 PM
looooove this style:thumbsup:

one crit is that his mickey mouse style hands dont really fit the style

04 April 2005, 01:59 PM
Very cool style simple but very stylish I like alote

04 April 2005, 02:55 PM
I like the boxed look so far. Keep it up.

04 April 2005, 05:20 PM
Very motivated by your support. Thanks.

For what says Hexodam, I had to say his hands are in fact gloves. It's why they are so "visible" even with his thin arms. Anyway maybe have I to reduce the fingers. I think I'll try it fast to see what it looks like. Anyway all crits are welcome.

04 April 2005, 09:19 PM (

The head seems ok. I have also makes sme ameliorations on the body. Others next... And the shoes to remodel. And the the 2nd character, the little girl.

04 April 2005, 09:28 PM
Hi authentic, love your style mate! Really wacky, 'specially his jawline...Great work:thumbsup:
Keep it coming

04 April 2005, 05:59 PM (

A very bad sketch just to show the final aim of the picture with the character I've model before. Other possibilities : the girl can catch his legs and he try not to fall. Or he can stay straignt and she jump to catch the ice cream but it really t high for her.
I wanna play about a child who don't his servant is paied to do this. He's just a freind for her. For the servant, this job is just the best job of his life cause he really adore the girl. In fact the2, master and servant, are happy of their situation.

04 April 2005, 08:46 PM (

Testing the posing and i have many interrogations. Is it really readable ??? Do I have to change my action ?? For what ??? Arrrgh so many questions...This challenge is going to kill me !!!

04 April 2005, 10:23 PM
jajajajaja:drool: ....very cool this model, is funny.
nice idea man. keep working:beer:

04 April 2005, 07:19 PM
That's a really nice character! Hilarious!!

Rock on and good luck on that!

04 April 2005, 05:40 AM
The character design is very original.,andthe modelling style, but the body hasnt the quality and livingness that the head has! try designing the body,again....great..keep it up.

good luck mate:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 09:33 AM (

Here's the little girl : the master... I have stop the work on the servant because I have not so much time so I prefer go back to him if I have more time later.
I hope the modelisation of the girl will be easier. I'm not sure... Anyway I like her and maybe this challenge is only here to improve my hand_drawing skills (which are so bad at the moment).

04 April 2005, 09:45 AM
Bravo ! Great work ! You've got a real personnal style ! Like your character design !:bounce: I'm an hard edges addict too ! Good luck for the rest of the challenge, make us other great and personnal work ! Gonna look back to your thread !:)

Bonne chance à toi (même si la chance n'a rien à faire la dedans !), bon suitage ! J'aime beaucoup ton style "différent" !

04 April 2005, 10:55 AM (

Just to share with all the first step of modeling of the little girl. Hope you'll like it.

04 April 2005, 06:18 PM (

The girl in her whole body. I don't know if I keep the shoes or let her in socks. The position in near of the final position with many details to adjust.

04 April 2005, 08:54 PM
Just great authentic, I love your overall style in this piece so far!
Keep it coming:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 02:50 PM
Yep - really like your style! I love that waiter - he's, -oh so french. Really funny.
Having seen your other work (luma boy, moon girl) I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out excellent. Very cool work

04 April 2005, 03:32 PM
very nice modeling man....that little girl looks very bad:scream:

04 April 2005, 04:07 PM
great idea
your men character is funny:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 08:26 PM
you've really got your own style, i like it. I like your idea as well, all looks great!

04 April 2005, 09:19 PM (

I think I got the basic posing. As I can have difficulty with such matter, any help is appricated.

04 April 2005, 12:45 AM
Your style ROCKS, I love it :bounce:

04 April 2005, 06:34 AM

i hvnt viseted for a few days but his has really turned into a cool piece.

i think the pose its pretty darn close to perfect.. i might look into onw where the butler is leaning back, as if overbalanced by the tiny kid (obviously he wouldnt be but it would be cool)... but dont change his expression i think what u have is excellent.

great work ill have to check in more reguarly!!!

04 April 2005, 07:14 AM
Hey authentic, well done mate! the new pose is leaps ahead of your original:thumbsup:

I'm taking 'simplicity' notes every time I visit...Cheers, and good luck!

04 April 2005, 01:34 PM
I just wanna thanks everybody who follows me.

To goro : I really like your master and servant

And a special thanks to daddymack and tilite for their different answer.

To daddymack : glad to see simplicity can be appreciated. It's my way to make illustration (maybe also a lazy way of time - I'm kidding)

Next to come : I have rework the pose to be more dynamic again. I think it's gonna be cool. Then it's time for colors or background. Don't have decided yet.

04 April 2005, 02:28 PM
Wow, great style you have, just found this thread and looking forward to seeing more. Bravo

04 April 2005, 08:15 PM (

I have reworked the posing. Now I need your help for 2 things. One is the layout. In my thread there is after this post, another one with different layout : horizontal, vertical, close-up. PLease help me choose

2nd thing : the servant was bringing something to the girl( master) before she jump on him to "thanks" him. What can this be : ice cream I thought but if someone got a better idea, tell me !

To conclude, if I think there is no way to win this challenge, it's a great pleasure to share my work with you. It had to be told :)

04 April 2005, 08:20 PM
AArgh I can't post attachements. For the layout I can't show you the picture. Well the choice was betwenn the one just up, one in the same camera as my previous posing, one like my previous posing but crop on the side to have a vertical layout. Or others...

04 April 2005, 09:23 PM
Hi again authentic, I think the first image conveys his pose and 'sudden stop' way better, in the second image, he could be stationary, and leaning back. I'd say the first is more dynamic...but the second is more personal...

Good luck man:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 06:00 AM
yeh this pose is just what i was thinking of... well done!!

ice-cream is great u cant go wrong with that... what about one of those massive sundeas that are like a foot tall... i dont know maybe even a teddy bear... lol i mean this is a 'cute' piece

great work

04 April 2005, 11:01 AM
hehe that's just too cool.

I'm following this thread. I really like your characters!

04 April 2005, 09:13 PM
I love the gesture in this work! Very good stuff!

04 April 2005, 02:13 PM
Thanks guys for comments. Some news :

I had no time to work more on the challenge last days. Back to work for now. I hope I can post new things really soon.

About the layout. MAny people prefer to see the servant on his whole body. But I prefer him cut in the leg cause it allow me to focus on the characters. In this way the background will be less important. I have not dfecided yet. So I think I'll do the picture in the entire and then crop if necessary.

About what he was carrying to the little girl. I stay on the idea of the ice cream even if I think there can be more original idea.

Now it's time to go back to work.

04 April 2005, 02:22 PM
ice-cream and happy kids, that a match made in heaven... I think thats a good idea... you can make her a big ice-cream with sprinkles and berries and some chocolate and custard, scrumptious. Would even make me to jump and hug that servant *L*

04 April 2005, 07:38 PM
Hello authentic
quote : " I don't know if I keep the shoes or let her in socks." Maybe she could lose one shoes, it would add some more action in the picture.
Great expressivity of the characters

04 April 2005, 09:37 PM (

Many differences since the last version. I add some details like ice cream, bg... I put the 1st color, prepare a simple lighting...
Even I nearly know where I want to go, I need your advice and comments.

04 April 2005, 01:37 AM
Your style is really cool, very nice movement in your scene, great work

04 April 2005, 07:39 AM
Hello authentic
quote : " I don't know if I keep the shoes or let her in socks." Maybe she could lose one shoes, it would add some more action in the picture.
Great expressivity of the characters

Some of my friends told me about this possibility. I think I'm gonna try it. Now there are many things "which fly" like ice cream... so I don't know if I put the shoes it would be so efficient. As it take not so much time, I 'll try it.

Thanx also to artlutik. I keep going. Many things to adjust.

04 April 2005, 09:15 AM
Hi Vince !

I'm just above you ;-)

More seriously, your posing is good, but for lightning, you have shadows on your BG wich are against the action not in the right direction, to my mind. All the main light would come from the left.
For the Ice cream, two things :
- separate the glass of the Ice, just a little bit.
- Add some "slurp" FX, I'm sure you'll do it right, you have a good future in FX...
For the color, the little girl seems to be sick, she need more life in her skin...

The design looks so good, you will increase the aim of the picture with just little things.

Oh just a last thing, the paint on the wall is on the arm of your man, it's not good to see exactly what's happens.

04 April 2005, 01:06 PM
Hey Buddy Authentic!!

I think your work is soo kind to see! Your style is very original!! I think your final render will be ok!! Great job dude! i will follow your thread!!

See U!!

04 April 2005, 02:28 PM
Thats looking pretty fiunny,:scream:

04 April 2005, 10:42 PM (

I found my last bg was not old style enough. Here's the new one. I'll try several things but if you got simple idea to improve it, go on.

04 April 2005, 01:43 PM
hello Vincent,

first, maybe you can try to switch on the wall light
then adding some mirror of tiny canvas or portrait
As the girl seems very enthusiastic when the servant brings her ice cream,
maybe there could lots of dirts on the wall ? Because of her frequent jumps ?

Anyway always nice lighting and character design

04 April 2005, 03:10 PM
Hello, Vincent.
Looks great! I like the stylized characters and colors you using.
Thank you for the coment.

04 April 2005, 05:42 PM
Very nice posing, style, and overall comp. The background fits the action well. Not too complex where it takes away from the characters. Depending on where you place the characters, you may need some other wall hangings to break up the blank wall. (like spacesnail's suggestions) Keep up the good work!

04 April 2005, 06:42 PM
A little reply to thanks everybody et to say what to come next.

safe05 and spacenail : The wall seems blank for the moment. I now have 2 possibility. My first choice was to focus only on characters and to let the bg the bg with a possible defocus. Now a new idea has been bringing to me which would justify a more complex bg. It would be some history of the jump. I explain, I may model a table shaling from where the girl jumped. And so... Of course it's more work. So it's a question of time. Concerning canvas, mirror, I tried some but it was difficult to place them and not disturb the reading of the characters. But there'll be new attempt. Oh spacenail your idea of dirt can also be a good idea. Thanks

Teebo : thanks. I know your advice are often good ones. These one are like this. It's always useful to have some crits.

I hope I'll put a new version in some hours. So see you later...

04 April 2005, 12:05 PM (

I need your help to choose my point of view. Some people told me the picture was too flat. So I tried a new point of view. tell me what you prefer. 2 things anyway : there can be a blur on the background. And, depending on time, the picture can become wider on the left with bg elements that the grirls used to jup on the servant.

As you can see I add a table and there will be a buffet? this one is just a attempt. And don't care of the shadows.

Tanks for looking and comment are xelcome

04 April 2005, 12:20 PM
Very nice project Vincent... I prefer the first compo... for the background, I don't think that necessary to blur it... you can only play with lights and shadow, that's will be sufficient to add some contrast between characters and environment...

That's a pretty scene guy... continue like that, that certainly will be great... bravo, j'aime beaucoup

04 April 2005, 01:04 PM
I think the lower picture is more dynamic :)
Keep the plate more visible...

Peut-être encore un peu plus en contre-plongée ?
Avec une expression désapprobatrice du serveur ?

Keep going on

04 April 2005, 04:26 PM
I personally like the top one since the characters dynamic posing contrasts the straight background. (i.e. setting the two apart a little more) The pose of the male figure also seems a little more refined. In all honesty I kind of like the shot without the table. It made the little girls jump seem much more energetic. But this all depends on the history you're planing on putting into the piece. Excellent work and looking forward to more. :)

04 April 2005, 05:27 PM
Hey vincent. I like more the second one. it gives a better perspective of the escene
a thought ....why don't you make more difused the shadows, like the shadows on the wall?
it wiil made ti more realistic.:D

04 April 2005, 10:31 PM (

What a mess... I show you here what was a possible idea. It's a very long picture thatshows the girl trajectory (chair, desk -there will be an deformed cloth on it-, table and then servant). It's a cool concept but I'm afraid to go far away from the matter of the challenge. With a close up (like the 1st pictures you've seen), I show more emotion in the master and srvant. The choice of the long picture is less emotive but has the particularity to be original and funny.
So I can't decide yet. Need your advice and comments.

Anyway I'll have to work on colors, lighting and details but there is not so much time yet so I have to choose my layout...

04 April 2005, 11:43 PM
haha yeh thats cool... love the way u can see her path of destruction maybe u could make that more clear, like puting a white cloth over the bench and having muddy footprints in it (just to make sure she makes more mess.. lol)

ive been away for a few days and uve really done some good work..

good work

04 April 2005, 09:05 AM
At his moment I think I 'll use the close up composition. I think it fits more the theme of master and servant. Of course I could have justified the long picture by the effort made by the girl to see the servant but it wasn't the aim of the picture. I really want to told about naivety of the girl who love the servant but didn't know he's a employee. And to show the affection of the servant for his master. For him, serve this little girl is the most important thing in the world and a real pleasure.
Anyway I'll do the long picture for personnal purpose and you'll see iti in the 2 versions I think. But for the challenge, the picture given will be the close up with just a chair or the table in right position.

tilite : good to see you back. I thought about the cloth. I just didn't have time. Good idea for the muddy footprints.

melkao : As I said don't care about shadows. There will be some possibilities : no shws, just, the things on the wall or very soft shadows. I had to try.

safe05 : Excellent comment on the table who diturb the energy of the girl. I put it on the other way now. Do you think it's better ???

taeyoungchoi : Cool a new spectator ! thanx.

spacesnail : I'm proud to see you coming back often on my post. For the servant I'm not sure he will have a too severe expression. Maybe just surprise or compassion

Lemog : Thanks for comment. Happy to see that people who are able to make such complex scene can appreciate simple ones.

04 April 2005, 09:11 AM
Lemog : Thanks for comment. Happy to see that people who are able to make such complex scene can appreciate simple ones.[/url]
You know... I prefer a lot when 3d was too much realistic... we have photo for the really. You have find a very sympathic style, for an interesting mood, and for that, I appreciate so much. Bon courage pour la suite :applause:

Rémy Malin
04 April 2005, 09:35 AM
Very funny style! And good idea , lovely

04 April 2005, 10:59 AM

I especially love the extra wide/path of mess crop - so even if you're not going for it in the challenge I'm looking forward to seeing you do it justice later. :D

04 April 2005, 02:01 PM
wow.. your style is really unique and refreshing.. I love the characters so far.. the wide angle shot strikes a good balance I think.. and a sense of speed...

looknig fwd to more..

04 April 2005, 02:08 PM
Interesting style you got going on- really like the vectorised look.

04 April 2005, 05:14 PM
i think in ur image u submit u should have the table and some way of explaining that she has traveled over it in a great carless rush to get to her beloved servant... those two words dont even fit together... sounds so strange.

so yeh include a footprint or somethign along those lines

04 April 2005, 05:41 PM
woooooh yes! it dosen't happen that often but once in a while I see something that really makes me go "wooooooh yes" and I get all happy, just to see something fresh.

such a nice style. even if it needs a few more things please don't add to much.. try to keep it simple. for me a simple foreground layer, maybe a painting on the wall.. and a few things that depicts the path she has taken is enough.

and the lamp to the right, somehow I see it very long and stretched on the Y-Axis. I think it will add to the style to make the lamptop very tall.

my new favourite entry..

04 April 2005, 05:45 PM
Awesome image. It really works.

04 April 2005, 09:50 AM
Well. The wider picture is such a success that I'm obliged to keep it for the challenge :D

Thanks everybody for comment. Yes, tilitle, I think i'll add some footprints (on the chair and maybe one on the wall. I'm actually working on the cloth on the bench. Some details will be added but I'll try to stay simple. And if I go too far in details, I hope you'll stay stop to me (especially fellah :scream: ).

Anyway I've got something really interesting to do with a painting on the wall. But it's a big work for me cause must do it in 2d. I tell (and show) you more soon. I hope.

Your comments really give me strength and your comments help me to ameliorate the picture. So let's continue.

04 April 2005, 10:34 AM
been a fan on your work for a while and this drips with your style as well

great characters, execution and concept

i like the last long composition as well .. it tells more of a story, takes you through the journey of her trials in order to get there ... finding nemo, apocalypse now, A.I. (??) where the story is the journey

great stuff

04 April 2005, 12:49 PM (

Here's who will be in the portrait. It's an old member of the girl family who is angry because he has been disturb by the girl's jumps. I have made a very fast model, he's not the main character of the picture.

04 April 2005, 01:16 PM
New wide comp is really cool - this is indeed a lovely entry, very unique and charming

04 April 2005, 06:18 PM
Fabulous, lovely

04 April 2005, 08:41 PM
Hi Vincent, Great start on the portrait:thumbsup: This will be a classic image me thinks...

04 April 2005, 05:16 AM
Very funny portrait... maybe he need to be a little bit more expressive, more chocked by the scene ?

04 April 2005, 02:05 PM
Well I have see just now your thread..I must say very interessing peace..I read the story and is very interessing..I like your style alot!!

have good job mate.

04 April 2005, 03:09 PM

04 April 2005, 09:59 PM (

I put the portrait in the scene and make some improvements in texture.
I had so many details to think and then looking for amelioration in lighting and rendering. But it\'s going ok.

looks great. you said you wanted the guy in the portrait to look angry. he's not looking that angry to me. to me he is just "looking" at the girl. I suggest exagerrating the expression. brows angeled more down might be enough. u could do it in photoshop if it's to hard to tweak the model.
maybe you could move him "up" in the portrait to, it's alot of empty space above him. and his stick is not showing very much. don't even know if it adds anything(the stick in the portrait I mean) so maybe remove it, or make it more visible.
but ofcourse, do as you want, just suggestions to a great piece..

04 April 2005, 02:28 AM
Like the progress. I agree that the portrait doesn't look very mean, but I love the character. In addition to fellah's suggestions, you can try giving him a little more of a brow. (bring it out towards camera) usually, I just angle the eyelids to exagerate an expression, might be worth playing with. Really fun concept. Keep rolling.

04 April 2005, 10:54 AM
At this time I think I will finish the picture for the date; it is already a success to achieve it in time. There are again many details to change, textures to make or improve. I think that some changes will only be seen but it doesn't matter. Moreover I have some research to do on lighting and colors (Even if I feel quite satisfied with the picture now)

safe05 fellah Lemog : thnaks for comments. I think, like you suggest, that I will make him more angry with the eyebrow. Anders, it will not be hard to change them because they are already done in photoshop (it's the only element done in 2d). I will try to put him more up in the portrait but not sure of the result.

monks alex DaddyMack kuzgunoglu Gunilla pigwater dmonk : thanks to all for your comments

04 April 2005, 10:55 AM
Ahahah nice update very funny, I like this style mate!! keep going, nice job!!

04 April 2005, 01:27 PM
J'avais pas fais attention a cette entré...

You got a nice idea, very funny and expressiv characters, i like your visual style

I'm looking forward buddy !

04 April 2005, 01:46 AM
Very strange...but cool style.

Nice emotions on the characters. I prefered the comp with the waiter looking at the girl, it has a kind of sweetness to it.

04 April 2005, 10:59 PM (

The last version of the bg. tell me what you think...

04 April 2005, 03:16 AM
Really great , you have a very nice style.

Your background is awesome the movement is wonderful until you get to the chair, it kinds break the movement of your scene, all the objects are leaning on one side so you tend to follow them until you get to the chair whom's leaning on the other side and breaks the rythm, sorry i repeat myself alote I must be getting (oh yeah my birthday today, depending on where you are on the planet)

Otherwise I love your work it's really nice.

04 April 2005, 06:37 AM
Nice work Vincent...nice style..I like it:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 03:15 PM
I'm quite happy with the background. I will now add some details on the characters (expression on srvant, hair of the girl...). I will try I thing also to change things on lighting maybe to focus more on the characters. And I 'll also try a completely different color scheme if I got the time.

Alex thanks to come back often and comment my work :)

arlutik happy birthday :bounce: and for the chair I don't know if I'll move it cause it explain how the girl climb the chair to be on the desk and then... Anyway thanks for your kind words.

Ken I 'm very embarassed with layout and feelings. The wide picture is a big success but I think the near picture is more sweet. On the other way the long shows what efforts have done the master just to be sweet with her servant. Maybe with a better lighting

cipher Merci. Happy to see someone new appreciating my work.

04 April 2005, 11:45 AM
Yeah great background, i like the colours

05 May 2005, 07:02 PM (

I have work a lot to try different lighting. This one I show you is one f the more "accurate" but it is definitively not adapted to mys tyle of chartacters (even with the light coming from the other side). So I think I 'll keepe a a simple rendering style with hard shadow like you seen before... Anyway if you got some comment concerning lighting on this picture or the old one cause it wll be the one I will use, It will be really helpful.

05 May 2005, 07:55 PM
Nice ligth setup mate I like the atmophere..maybe you can just try varius color mix..but just my opinion..very well done:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 09:24 AM
the latest update on the lighting is excellent... i must stop u from ussing the light old lighting... if ur worried about the lighting not suiting ur characters then change it... but u cant go back to the start now.

what u could do is change it to a night scene and only have a lil bit of light comming from the left of the image... instead have ur lamp and wall light doing most of the lighting... this will make the image look even better than ur most recent update... even if u dont like is u cant go back to the origional set-up it just doesnt do ur skills justice!

great work:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 09:44 AM
This is looking absolutely beautiful...

I really like the new lighting, but it's hard to say how it will impact the scene without the characters in place. If it's any help, even without the girl & man it still looks wonderful!

I truly can't wait to see the words 'Final Image' on your challenge page.

05 May 2005, 09:50 AM
I like a lot this new lighting too... I think that give a more rich light to the scene... but as AJ, I'm waiting the characters...

05 May 2005, 10:32 AM
really nice environment.............keep it up

05 May 2005, 11:53 AM
hm.. looks ok, but you losed alot of style with the last lighting setup.. it's a bit hard to tell without the characters. but, I prefered the simple 2d/3d style of the first image I saw.

05 May 2005, 11:56 AM
YES, yes, stylize, stylize it more ! Its what´s missing in this challange.

05 May 2005, 03:05 PM
Very hard to choose the background style... This last one is I think very intersting but not really in my style. At 1st try the characters don't fit the bg. Do I work them enough to see I dont' know. MAybe have I be influenced by the fact I post some work for expose 3 and I have not be choose. So I think only my simple style has no chance to win anything. But in asense it's my style and it's what I like. So I won't change my mind.
So well the solution is for the moment to try and listen different advice but keeping what I am.

Anyway, thanks to follow me

navylete Style is my 1st interest. I like stylish works. But I don't know if I'll have enough inspiration...

anders I think it is symptomatic to see that the personn who clearly prefer the 1st version is the one who has the style the nearer from mine... Now, I think you're right. As you can see in my post, it is also my 1st opinion. But there is also interssant thing in this lighting. Do I have to keep some and to mix them? Can I ameliorate the 1st version ? So much question... Help !

manikantkujur Thks. :)

Lemog Thx. I have to work to show you a nearly final picture but I hope it comes in a short time.

AJ_23 The characters actually doesn't fit the bg (even he is ok). But do I work it enough...

tilite : Thx for your comments. I have thought about a night scene but for me it doesn't fit the girl and the ice cream. Moreover I wanted to try a more day or non determined scene cause I often do night works that are esaier I think.

alex : Yes I want to try other colors too. But will I have the time...

ilusiondigital : thx. Do you like the new test or do you prefer the old one.

05 May 2005, 03:20 PM
hmm ... I'm leaning towards the first lighting. I think it fits the semi cartoonish style you got in the characters. Also suits the concept of trajectory better, but I might be wrong
Couldn't you place the characters in both for comparition?

.... and the scene is just beautiful!

05 May 2005, 10:19 PM (

I finally decide to go back to a simple rendering. I don't think the more realistic rendering was serving the picture. The attention was on the left where there is..nothing and the characters were lost. So it was interesting, not bad alone, it allos me to learn new things but I had to forget it. If you can do the same :)

Here you can see the picture with characters. It's a come back to master and servant. I think I had to keepin my mind the aim of the challenge. The power of this picture is, according to me, his simplicity and the concept. So let's make simple things, even it is less spectacular or impressive.

Now I have some work on characters and some details to adjust or add.

Then I surely try another color scheme.

Comments are of course aprreciated even if some are despite of my rendering choice :). Never mind.

05 May 2005, 02:46 AM
Vincent, very nice composition love your style.

The chair still bugs me and I know it's to justify how she clmbed on the desk, did you try with the chair on its four legs or even going the other way I think it would show even more that she climbed on the desk and excited like she was the chair fell when she reached the desk but the other way, please try it to see what it does to your compo I think the movement would be even nicer, I know I insist on this but I love your compo so much it's so "bande dessine" but that chair breaks it for me.

By the way your choice of rendering is great it keeps the cartoon style.

05 May 2005, 08:27 AM
I think the realistic lighting test you posted looked stunning.. but as you said the focus is lost. It's really interesting seeing that development process, trial and error and thought process going into image composition. Your rendering style decision still looks great!

how about adding maybe some paper that just flew off the desk from the movement, and the wind is jsut carrying it.

05 May 2005, 02:50 PM
very nice. it looks like a monster family like the adams.... very dark and nice...i like it:eek:

05 May 2005, 04:47 PM
Nice scene mate nicw vell done:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 08:05 AM
Very good work! I like your's great:)
Come back see your final image!! keep it up! Bonne chance:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 01:13 PM
Alexandre Alex Melkao and Gunilla : thx for your sweet words. give me motivation

Martin : The paper is a godd idea to give movement but I don't really know where place them to fit the bg. On the big there is already a "cloth", on the table the flower. Is it really in the good time with the picture. I don't know yet.

Artlutik : you insist so much that I think it would be stupid not to try. I think I'll post soon a picture with the chair on the other way, just to see :D and maybe I will be convicted. Thanks to help the picture grow.

05 May 2005, 12:03 AM
I was wondering if the camera angle could be a bit more dramatic.

What if you placed the camera so it looked down the corridor, with a wide lens.
The characters would big in the foreground and the girl’s path would be visible in the background.

IMO at the moment everything is a bit small in the frame.

05 May 2005, 01:29 AM
Great idea, but you definitely should work more on scene composition and light. Try to add some accent to the main characters, and make secondary plan less important.

05 May 2005, 08:19 AM (

Just a minor update to show artlutik what the picture would look like with the chair rotated on the other way. Tell me which one you prefer. For the moment I keep my first idea but it has to be discuss.

05 May 2005, 08:37 AM
wwow! nice work! simple but effective! I really like your style , weldone charactor and move ment too!

05 May 2005, 10:12 AM
authentic, now it's fascinating! Honestly speaking I just love the style which I describe as "sharp-edjed helixes" :) I like it's kind idea (not a domination by force etc.). The only thing I find a bit strange are hands of servant - to me they remind an isect... But it not so important now - this is your personl way you see it and in general - just great work!
It is good that people are interested in cartoons!
Yes, voting guaranteed here!

05 May 2005, 04:34 PM (

I think I have finished the characters. Here they are. My last interogation is to keep or not the black area outside the eyes of the servant. Waiting for your comments.

I have changed many things : bend shoes, ameliorate dress, add some textures on plate, add a spoon....I also change his expression to a more comprehensive one. He is more amused than surprise. Hope you'll like it.

05 May 2005, 07:29 PM
Vincent, thanx, I like it with the chair in the other way really continues the movement you got in your scene. You have to do an animation with that style it's so cool.

05 May 2005, 10:30 PM
Great image mate!! good job:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 01:26 AM
to me,black area outside eye is interesting visually.
and also kinda shows his overtime working.
if i were you,i will keep it

05 May 2005, 04:18 AM
Hilarious characters and great compostion. I wish you good luck:)

05 May 2005, 05:30 AM
Hi authentic,
just dropped by after I saw your comment on my entry... I see, you're taking part with a 3D-entry -- that's really out of my expertise, so no comments from me here. Just good luck...

:) <- Lutz

05 May 2005, 05:51 AM

Nice work,i like charactor and move ment too!

05 May 2005, 01:39 PM
I work and I think it's nearly finihed. If I had time I'll try another color scheme but I must be careful about rendering time. As my picture is wide the final resolution will be gorgeous !

chinbig2000 kerembeyit alex monsitj : thanks everybody and good luck for your own master and servant.

lutz : don't be shy . Even if you don't know anything in 3d, you can say you like or not a picture and what it makes you feel. Every opinion is good to hear.

wuxi_dakar : for the moment my mind is to keep these black area. But I change my mind so fastly :D

arlutik : glad to see you like the chair even if I think I'll put it at his original position for the final picture... Animation : I 'd like to do it. Moreover I think these character (especially servant) are really interssant to animate. But bones, skinning and animation, so much work. I'm not sure I'll have the time. I got a full time job for the moment and other 3d project to make. But it's in my mind

Deryk : 1st, thx for your words. I have modifiy a little the hand. Do you think it's better ??

Pkonst : I completely agree with you. I have made some changes to the lighting and background (move the light a little) and I think It's better. I got some work again but you will see it ithe next time I post a picture.

ken T : Well I already tried to move the cam (you can see it on another picture) and it was too..well, in fact it losts a lot of style I thought. The wide angle is bad because you lose character but it's original and allows me to tell a whole story. It was long but I made this choice.

see you.

05 May 2005, 06:21 PM
This is getting better and better, i like your progress, this is reqlly dynamic and funny subject

Keep sending, it's great !

05 May 2005, 10:58 AM (

I show you the last rendering before render with the final resolution (so big with my wide camera). So if you got comments, it's time.
I have made some changements, moving a little the light to more focus on character. There will be a little glow in post effects on the bg and color correction. Wil be also made some ice cream "slurp".

And I'll try this week end to make another color picture. If it works fast I'll go through, On the contrary, I'll keep this one.

05 May 2005, 12:22 PM
Great style and movement, your character design is supurb. Bravo

05 May 2005, 05:44 PM
some nit-pick-suggestions.
his left hand could be more expressive, more irregularity in his fingers.

exaggerating the servants expression could be nice to, I would like to see him with a big smile.

I also had this idea, which is alot of work, but i'll say it anyways, maybe it will give some ideas.
you could have made a corridor on the left of the picture, running into the picture(Z-axis)
like if the girl ran from that corridor, made a turn and..
it could have added a little depth and a little more "history" to the picture. but at the same time, a flat image like this has its beauty to.

I think the "glow" in the portrait takes to much attention and feels a little "off" from the style of the rest of the BG.

just some ideas, nitpicks. it's already a nice pic as I've stated may times before. u've got style..

05 May 2005, 06:18 PM
you have capruted a great scene with simplicity and style. I really love the idea dn i think the style is uniquely yours... very original piece of work... i would love to cee more dinamic lighting and mood in the scene, it looks a bit flat and lifeless at the moment... thats just my 2 cents tho.. keep it up mate

05 May 2005, 09:07 PM
shiet man , is this 3D ? you realy have ur own style going here, and I had to look twice didn´t see it was a 3d job, nice work keep on going.

Best wishes

05 May 2005, 01:57 PM (

As Anders suggest me, I tried to make a different expression for the servant. Here are 3 of these. Tell me which one you think is the best. The teeth has been made very fastly in photoshop. If I choose it it will me better (even if it can be made in photoshop).
Thnaks for your comments

05 May 2005, 02:08 PM
Hello everybody. I started rendering big picture but withmy huge resolution and my very little computer, it's so long. So I must be efficient.

handlebar cipher sgtpepper : thnaks to you. Glad to see you appreciate my work

anders : as you can see I try a different expression. tell me what your prefer. For the hand I'll see what I'll do. Don't know for the moment. Maybe is it more a problem of rendering (too white).
For the portrait I agree with you even it is not very strong problem. But as I said there willbe a general glow (not too strong) on the bg, I think it would be ok. I'll post it soon I think.
For the corridor and more history, I already thought about that. I think it will be cool but it doesn't feet the matter of master and servant. Just to stay in the subject I'll keep it in this way. But I think that I will do a biggest picture with corridor for personnal purpose. And if I'll do I will os in on Cg talk.
Thanks for all these intersting comments

overcontrast : thanx. I agree it can be better on lighting and emotion. But I didn't find what to add or adjust while I stay in my simple style. Do you have any suggestions ??

05 May 2005, 02:51 PM
I like your style and from layout you post , I think the servant face is appear a little in composition , you have to put more exageration to his face to see clearly from distance , I think the first one is clear but I think you can add more to it!

the girl is very cute! I like it a lot !

05 May 2005, 04:00 PM
heya Vincent, I'm glad you appreciated my suggestions and are trying to apply them to your image!

I did a little "overpaint" on your images to show more of what I meant by the face-expression and the hand silhouette.
Click for image (
(a bad thing with the expression I did is that I had to remove the mustache because it interfeared to much with the mouth shape)

if you still want to use one of the 3 expressions you showed, I prefer the 2nd. even though I think it will be hard to "read" that smile in a small image.

05 May 2005, 05:19 PM
as i said before,i LOVE ur style,it must turn out well, keep it up:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 06:12 PM (

Ok new ones. I modify the eyebrow. I was thinking about it when fellah told me. And then I modify the mouth as far as I can as fellah and monsitj suggest me (thx). The modeling is hard to move

Anders : thanks for reply. For the mouth I can't delete tjhe mustache. He would look to young but I tried to make something better anyway. And I will change the hands

05 May 2005, 07:44 PM
I like your style, very original:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 12:53 AM
good, it looks much better now. I personaly prefer no1 and no3. (and you succedded to keep the mustache to which is great!)
I'm looking forward to see your next update Vincent, work work :wip:

05 May 2005, 02:27 AM
Yeah .......nice detail....i'm agree with with fellah the 1 look better:bounce:

05 May 2005, 10:29 AM
I agree with fellah, the best for me 1 and 3 too. Specially the mouth of the 3

Godd job, so cool

05 May 2005, 08:11 PM
Oo, impressive linework, or not linework as it's 3D but the outlines on the waiter for instance... I could believe they're as they would be if you drew the chap, and not just some surfaces between the points that were determined from X, Y and Z angles, which often seems to be the case with 3D things (says the nearly completely 2D girl).

I don't remember who it was who said something about the camera angle, something like it could be more dramatic. Anyways, I disagree. I'd like to flatter myself in believing that I think I understand where you're going with the present composition, and that I quite like it. Feels very appropriate. The image is not a frame from an animation but, well, an illustration. It's a still life depicting movement.

05 May 2005, 08:51 PM (

Ok. It appears better now. Some fx would be in 2d but it's nearly finish. Comments are always welcome as the time is quite short now.

05 May 2005, 09:02 PM
And some answers and comments.

Kargokultti : Do I derserve so sweet words ?? Don't know but I appreciate you understand my way to do this picture. And good luck for yours.:)

ilusiondigital : and finally...I choose the 1st. It was the better with good visualisation. Thx for comment.

melkao : to the mouth choice, you win:scream:. Congratulations.

Madlight, Maxter : thanks, really...

Anders : Hey I'm working. Don't stress me :) but tired this evening. A reason why I'm trying to do bad humor. Seriously, thanks cause you do wht I expect in this forum, encourage and constructiv critic (is it english language??). Well for the hand, what you have drawned me was good but once in the picture we didn't understand again that he was stabilized himself. But it gaves me strength to modify it to do a better pose.

Going to sleep now. Good night everybody. Sorry for this post message.:wavey:

05 May 2005, 10:27 PM
it's coming along nicely.. reading over the suggestions I think it helped alot and added so much more! awesome work Vincent!

05 May 2005, 12:45 AM
heheh I will try not stress you to much now, I'll be in your situation very soon with my own entry and I don't want to get heavy pressure then ;)
the last expression works great on the pic, it added alot more and it's quite easy to read it to. for the hand, nevermind. it's a detail, the way you did it now works to.
(hehe and yes, the words you wrote are considered to be english words.. atleast I understood them :) )

05 May 2005, 03:04 AM
melkao : to the mouth choice, you win:scream:. Congratulations.

jajaja thanks man...but the congratulations are for you...because you are doing a great work:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 03:10 AM
this is so cute!
love the style!it's so creative!

just one question though. like i can tell the "servant" from the typical dressing of the man. but does the master's status indicate clearly?

anyway, this is one of the few works i really love! keep it up and good luck!

05 May 2005, 06:44 PM
ehehe always so funny mate...I like it!

05 May 2005, 10:14 PM (

Ok. I add some ice cream fx, put the characters in the bg, modfiy and ajust color... I've got something to test but it has 10% chance to success, so well it's finished..depending of your comments, of course !

05 May 2005, 10:31 PM
And some answer

Alex : thanks to be here so often. and your MS is really original.:)

Jack : thx. of course, we understand he's the servant with his suit (and bg...). But for him it's not a problem to serve this little girl. She's so cute. I wanted to show a more positive view of master and srvant relation. I'll explain most about these characters when I'll post the final image (so very soon:scream:)

melkao : thx.

anders : the pression is on you now...

martin : Thx. Just something, waiting for render, but if it is so good as the rest, I hope you'll be in the winners. Happy to see simple idea and so much emotion.:)

05 May 2005, 10:34 PM
first of all, great characters!
If you want to change something you can to leave out the
blue table. He has the same color as the charactergroup.
And you can place the Master&Servant more to the center.
The flowers can fall on the chair.

Ralf Stumpf

05 May 2005, 01:14 AM
I love that image keep it up.

05 May 2005, 01:15 AM
This is excellent! I love the story that is taking place here, and how everything can be shown in one snapshot. It's cute By the way thanks for replying on my King Kong painting! I'm happy to see that people like it.

05 May 2005, 01:29 AM
don't know what to comments! great work ,
some point i have to suggestion for make you more fun in tweak process is , maybe change girl hair to orange or something like the top orange element , I think it's work ( in my opinion) add opposite color to image because now overall color look monochrome, maybe it's work or dont' work , but it's easy just Hue and saturate !! have fun!

05 May 2005, 01:42 AM
Great style, really i just love everything

05 May 2005, 04:59 AM
I'm totally okay with the Monsit idea... orange hairs is very good... I do the test in Photoshop... and I thing that enriched the vision of the scene... and etrangely... that give more dynamic to your scene... you must test that if you want...

In any case, your picture come really good mate... you're near of the end... GO

05 May 2005, 10:37 AM
Monsitj Lemog : thanks. I'll try the orange hair but I'm a bit hopeless. I'll have made so many hue and then I'll arrive to this picture. But one more hue will not kill me and maybe increase the picture. :)

Freakjc Poju franksmithy : thx.

Wildwire : I have already change the color of the table to be more different that character's one. But as you told about it, I think my change was too shy. I will make it more. Thx for comment.

05 May 2005, 11:16 AM
great work, very nice style. This would make a great animation too!

05 May 2005, 09:23 PM (

2 picture for a the last modifies. There are 2 things different in these picture. One is of course the color of the light at the right. The 2nd is the position of ice cream sphere...
For the ice cream I have no preference for the moment.
For the bg light I hesitate. The redest one is more colored but the less let the spectator more concentrate on the character which are the aim of this challenge. Give me your opinion.

05 May 2005, 10:08 PM
hehe you are going into details now, it's really hard to decide which one of those versions are the "best". I tried, and first I thought the new "orange" version was better.. then after a while I started to prefer the old one again.. same thing with the icecream, first i prefered the top one. then after a while second..
right now, I would say blue version with the icecream from the top(orange) image. (but I might change my mind soon :) )

05 May 2005, 02:52 AM
I agree with fellah, icecream from top and light from bottom..........Yep i checked again and those are my choises

05 May 2005, 05:13 AM
:bounce: I love character desigh and style:bounce: good luck.

05 May 2005, 02:57 PM
Vincent I would choose number one. The light is more warm and I can feel that the girl really likes her servant. Also the icream look more k to me. I just love the whole picture. Good luck!

05 May 2005, 03:20 PM
great images!

i like upper image.
it's natural. look like light bulb color.
it has not only a change of brightness but also change of color.
and i pay attention to man and girl.

05 May 2005, 06:23 PM
some words on story :

Artistic process :

Not so much things to tell. My aim was to tell a story in a picture. For design I've made many test because I'm not used to do this. 1st I've doen a very big servant but it was too similar of a old design I've done; I choose amore severe one and to make him characteristic I use many hard edges.
The girl had only thing to be: she had to be cute. I made her big (closed) eye and try some original hair; I'lm pretty happy of my character.
The Bg had to remember an old european house. He's not bad but had a lack of style to me. Never mind..

Just some textures it's not my style. For the colors I didn't really choose it, it comes to me . For the rest many test and many help. Thanks you

And time was to finish. And wait for the next challenge.

Hi mate, this is a very good work! I like the image composition, colors and character style. Maybe if you want, you can add some other details!!

05 May 2005, 03:35 PM
Great, you have to make an animation out of this! Lovely consistent stylized forms & sense of movement. If you've got time, maybe you could add some more small narrative details like that painting, but it's fine as it is

05 May 2005, 04:24 PM
i love the style ,very unique and original , good luck

I wanna thanks everybody. It was really a ploeasure to make this picture with you, all over the world. I say good luck for everybody. Many smileys for you.:):scream::bounce::love::applause:

This picture and character have maybe a future. For the picture, maybe I'll made a larger version with more history. MAybe I'll made over on the same theme with same character. In an other way, I 'd like to animate them. Many things to do but not enough time. I have to continue some illustrations for my children's book (cf luma boy and moon girl) before doing this.

Oh and I forgot the title for the picture; It's called :

"My best friend is 50 years old more than me"

05 May 2005, 08:09 PM
i simply loved the idea...
yours is the cutest entry i have come across...
the story line and presentation both are very good...
what strikes most about the image is the importance given to the feelings rather than trying to be realistic(i hope you get what i mean)...the look of the image goes well with the story idea...
best of luck!!

Thanks to everybody. When i started this challenge (my 1st), I didn't think I would have so much reactions. I don't know if my simple style can be effective again the so big work made by the other but I'm glad to see the reactions, even if I don't know I deserve them.

I'm also happy to have discover so great artists as you can be. And now I feel I'm IN the cgtalk community.
