View Full Version : Master and Servant 3D Entry: AJ Jefferies

03-28-2005, 05:13 PM
AJ Jefferies has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=6835)

Latest Update: Lighting: Composition Testing
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6835/6835_1115025158_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6835/6835_1115025158_large.jpg)

Just playing with a rough setup of the composition. The deadline has made me resigned to just the one bot in the scene. It does make it easier to put together but I don't think it will read as comically as I had intended...

C'est la vie!

Extremely crude concept. Basically, the idea is to have two ballet dancing robots being controlled by their master who eagerly watches their performance from behind the 'stage'. Early days... early days.

Here's an idea of the robot's design, I really want them to look as humiliated as possible, despite the fact that they were clearly built with tutu's.

03-28-2005, 05:33 PM
hahahahaha love this man!

glad you joined , we really have to finish this one man :)

03-28-2005, 06:19 PM

Started to model up the first bot. Keeping it all fairly simple. I greatly need to improve my texturing & lighting skills so I'll try to get as much detail/interest in the image from those areas as possible.

04-05-2005, 09:03 PM
Sheep, tdawg217, Ila & Ke V2 - thankyou for the comments & encouragement so far! Very appreciated. (It's up to you to update your thread now Sheep, don't let me down!)

hands0nfire - It's a small world... Who knows, we could even be related! Good to see someone else fighting the 3D corner with a great surname :D

04-05-2005, 09:10 PM
Hahaah... Greetings AJ_23, your concept and wips look reaaly cheeky, pulled a smile outta me really early in the morn. Cheers mate, and good luck with it all:thumbsup:

04-06-2005, 01:48 PM
Refreshing entry you got there! :)
The scale thing is very interesting, can't wait to see how this one turns out.
Keep posting!

04-06-2005, 07:13 PM
lol... great idea mate

04-08-2005, 05:06 AM
hi ,just wondering if there is going to be a human character in the composition, because it is a requirement of the contest!

04-08-2005, 05:22 AM
I simply LOVE the 'lady robot' design!!

keep it up! :applause:

04-08-2005, 05:35 AM
Hey Man!!

Really great idea!! love the progress so far ;)

Keep it up. :bounce:

hi ,just wondering if there is going to be a human character in the composition, because it is a requirement of the contest!

Yep - those circles in the background are the glasses of the inventor who will be controlling the unwilling robots... My concept sketch isn't very clear really, I might try to update it this weekend.

Thanks for the comments guys! :D

04-08-2005, 10:18 AM
:bounce: Oh AJ..u can't possibly know how happy i am to see u working on this....Lady Robota is my favourite...(although i think the surprise will come from Master's face..am i right)

Keep going man..i am impatient for your updates ..and have fun.

(sorry for my bad Engrish) :D

Not a great deal of an update, just some legs for the bot to prance around on. The horrible sausage shaped shoes are place holders at the moment. I haven't decided whether to opt for ballerina slippers or enormous ungainly robo-feet...

04-09-2005, 05:00 PM

Just a little pose test to see what's working and what isn't. Safe to say the little bot needs some proper hands & feet...

04-09-2005, 05:57 PM
Hahahaha your idea is really cool AJ, i love the expression of those bots, simple but powerful

Can't wait to see more of this scene :scream:

04-09-2005, 10:46 PM
Now I can tell that these little bots deserve a short animation!

A new pair of shoes (and fetching ribbons) for the bots feet

Just some more silly posing with the new shoes (note : I am not using reference for these poses, so my sincere apologies to anyone who studies ballet...)

04-10-2005, 12:14 PM
Now I can tell that these little bots deserve a short animation!

Well I'm no animator Mr S, but if you've got nothing to do after moogoo... they're all yours! :D

04-10-2005, 03:39 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6835/6835_1113147572_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6835/6835_1113147572_large.jpg)

I promised myself that I wouldn't even touch the render button until I'd finished all of the modeling and was ready to UV everything. Then I thought - bugger that. So here's an actual render of the bot, not the right textures, not the right lighting & dirty as hell. Oh and I've started modeling a new tutu...

04-10-2005, 03:47 PM
Very promising. May I suggest something else for the hands? These dont look so elegant. No ofence  .

Yours truly

04-10-2005, 04:09 PM
Those bots really have character - lovely poses. THis is gping to be real fun to see completed, good luck

04-10-2005, 04:12 PM
a clap for you Aj.. i love this character lol... awesome.. very humourous.. which is great :applause:

04-10-2005, 04:39 PM
very funny concept, a robot in a tutu? brilliant! yet another one to watch.

04-10-2005, 04:58 PM
no animator my ass :) you had the best anim session entry dude , animate those robots! :)

04-10-2005, 05:44 PM
well not sure it really feets the aim of master and servant but these are so really cool design, render and posing. And I agree with everybody : ANIMATION ! please....

04-10-2005, 07:05 PM
Thanks for the feedback guys, it's encouraging to get some responses!

NEWT# - You're absolutely right, some proper hands are the next order of the day!

Ali - You are definitely too kind. I'll strike you a deal, you update your M&S entry & I'll give animating the robots a bash... What say you? ;)

authentic - I know what you mean, I hope that when I've modeled the inventor/controller and put the bots dancing into some sort of context it'll look more 'master/servant'.

04-10-2005, 08:32 PM
AJ, the slippers are killer:thumbsup:
I love this thread:)
Keep the laughs coming man!

04-10-2005, 08:41 PM
Extremly funny design.
Love it!!!

04-10-2005, 09:24 PM
:bounce::bounce:this is realy nice AJ...the concept is realy good,,,that kind of fantasies which i realy like......i like therendering tooo...nice colors u've used ....
i'm forward to see the final..kep it up:thumbsup:

04-10-2005, 11:44 PM
Great stuff AJ. I've always loved your sence of humor in your designs and you posts.:D Nice render too. Keep it up.

BTW. It would be a crime if these guys weren't animated.

04-11-2005, 02:35 AM
bahahahaha~! you have my greatest support this piece is going to be wonderful!

04-11-2005, 08:05 PM
I like how this turned out a lot! Very fun to just look at. Maybe make the scene a little more "extreme" or "intense" than just one dancer catching the other. Try and think about what problems robots might have when dancing? I'm sure you'll figure it all out, you're doing good :)

04-11-2005, 08:36 PM
to good m8!

like the others say....these should be animated you know :)

04-11-2005, 08:54 PM
we want T. O . C . Z . S . E (*)

Decoding hint: HAL :)

04-12-2005, 06:47 AM

this is such a funny concept...
great modeling... keep it up

04-12-2005, 12:30 PM
thought for animation....

have the two dancing, fluffy, light, elegant ballet and what not. then have the female robot launch herself into the air (maybe doing somkind of turn or something) have the male bot arms out, sliding across the dance floor to catch her as she falls...then (whilst still in the air) have the female fall apart so all of here limbs fall to the ground. leaving the male robot embarrassing and confused

just a thought (hint hint)

04-12-2005, 12:47 PM
yeh animation would be so cool.... I think you will need to put a human master in their dude, as it is one of the requirements of the challenge.

04-12-2005, 12:51 PM
Very cool design I liked the poses you came up with in the last updates. The slippers are excellent! I think this model would be very fun to animate.

I can't wait to see when you final piece!

Hahahah...man..i know u have heard this from everyone....but ..please..PLEASE ...animate this ...hahahahahahaha:thumbsup:

04-12-2005, 05:39 PM
Ok! I'll animate them!

Seriously, thanks for the comments guys.

Mat - thats a fantastic idea! But dammit man - you know how easily distracted I am, and you're putting excellent ideas into my head before I've even finished!

Eddie - I am putting a human in the scene, the robots are being remotely controlled by their master behind them. (I knew I should have done a better concept sketch!)

Ila, Dimitris & Tony - thankyou all (although I still haven't worked out what you said Ila...)

Back to Max for me...

04-12-2005, 06:17 PM
...although I still haven't worked out what you said Ila...

Use You JRSF!

04-15-2005, 06:15 PM

04-18-2005, 04:33 PM
Hahaha can't believe this threads evaded me for so long. Lookin great so far AJ especialy the last render ...nice improvement on the lighting.

04-19-2005, 10:48 PM
Back to Max for me...

I just wanted to aske you .....

04-19-2005, 11:02 PM
Yes yes my owly friend - Unfortunately my Brother's getting married in a couple of weeks and he foolishly made me the best man, so I've had to deal with organising & attending his Stag do the past few days (i.e: getting extremely drunk & forcing him to look as stupid as possible).

I can't promise I will show you what I've done tomorrow (as I have now realised that I'm going to the pub...)

04-20-2005, 02:25 AM
I really like the comedic character the lady robot has.

04-20-2005, 06:02 AM
I love your idea AJ... clean concept and good design fir the robot  I'm waiting his eyes to add him a real personality... keep it up man :bounce: that's so funny... and funny is good, our world need fun :D

04-20-2005, 08:30 PM
hehe i LOVE it

keep it up and good luck

04-21-2005, 01:00 AM
jajaja man thats funny, i like this:scream:

04-21-2005, 08:59 AM
nice work man, i like the metal material alot, what did u do to make it seamed brushed. anyways the characters are absolutely amazing proportions for animation and i suggest you do some when this is over.

04-23-2005, 05:22 AM
I'm waiting for the updates, man! :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

04-23-2005, 07:00 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6835/6835_1114282799_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6835/6835_1114282799_large.jpg)

Not an enormous update - but I at least wanted to wave and say "I'm still doing something!".

I've sorted out some hands, fashioned a new tutu (newtu?) & most importantly - started mapping the main body. It still needs plenty of work (some more tarnishing around the edges for example) but it's on it's way.

Unfortunately, I still haven't worked out how big the bot is going to appear in the final composition, so the texture is 4000x3000 to compensate for this, so I've possibly wasted a lot of time putting in details that won't be evident in the final image. In the interest of time (and my sanity) I'm going to have to figure out the scale of the scene before I texture anything else...

Hopefully this 'stop-gap' update will be replaced tomorrow with something much more noteworthy... (he says)

04-23-2005, 07:02 PM
what did u do to make it seamed brushed

It's Vray & glossy reflections - a mans best friend & a CPU's worst nightmare, hooray for multi-threading!

04-23-2005, 07:54 PM
AJ, your robot rules. I love it, it's so absurd

great work

04-23-2005, 08:14 PM
Yes, impressive texture and render

04-23-2005, 11:57 PM
hehehehhe so you decided to join a challenge once again!! :D
I'm so confident you won't finish this that I dare to ask.. r u game? if you finish I finish, if I finish you finish?

very nice work so far btw! the last texturing might have been subtle, but it really added alot!

04-24-2005, 03:00 AM
if you finish I finish, if I finish you finish?

Oh that's a deal my viking friend... That's a deal!

04-24-2005, 03:04 AM
hahaha priceless, great quality, good job man u pretty much have to animate this one for sure because we won't stop bugging u until u do it :D

04-26-2005, 02:24 PM

Some more fooling with the bots textures/posing. Time to get cracking on the Master...

04-26-2005, 02:43 PM
brilliant work, i love the concept, its very funny and the result has a lot of character. great modelling and texturing in particular, the new pose is very nice. good luck, i'm looking forward to the finished product, this is my new favorite

04-26-2005, 02:48 PM
hey man, i don't know where did you get that idea for your trhead and your models.
but is very cool and funny:thumbsup:

04-26-2005, 03:39 PM

04-26-2005, 05:04 PM
Haha , nice render, great expression in the pose

04-26-2005, 05:06 PM
Ahahah-hahahaha.... Aw, this is my new favourite robot. Awesome.

04-26-2005, 06:36 PM
:scream: That's great, very cute and funny indeed

04-26-2005, 06:59 PM
ah yes! great to see you're still working on it, nice pose!
ooor well actually.. hm.. maybe we should decide what the punishment and price for the one of us who break the 'promise' shall be? :hmm:

04-26-2005, 07:10 PM
can't believe I missed that one; it's awesome ... keep going AJ !

04-26-2005, 07:30 PM

04-26-2005, 08:38 PM
LOL AJ, it keeps getting better each time I visit over here:thumbsup::thumbsup:

04-26-2005, 10:42 PM
Can't believe I missed this! Beautiful and hilarious! The psoe is fanatsic, and the metal texturing is superb. Perhaps a little more work on the tutu?:D

04-27-2005, 03:02 AM
Ok you toped it by putting it in position, I love it even more.

Try using a mask in your oppacity of your tutu with, I did that for the lace of my puppets with a patern in it looks even nicer, just a sugestion.

Great work :applause:

04-30-2005, 04:55 AM
Excellent progress!
Look forward to seeing more...................................................................

04-30-2005, 07:12 AM
Ahahahahah, bella danzarina, totally great. Congratulations friend

04-30-2005, 09:22 AM
where is the human charactar,i think its better to put some human in,coz thats the requirment of this topic, dono if robots counts, hope it does, anyway, very good shading and lighting for the robot;'s body/ like it

04-30-2005, 10:49 AM
interesting, genuine innovative approach (besides smell like 60' <sixties>) hard to explain

waiting to see the result

04-30-2005, 06:01 PM
keep up the good work- your idea is breathtaking, this can be the nuts!

05-01-2005, 05:14 PM

Right, here's some wires of my progress on the Master for the scene. I'm not 100% sure how close I'm going to have his face in frame, so I'll need to work that out before I start on his expression...

05-01-2005, 05:17 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6835/6835_1114967832_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6835/6835_1114967832_large.jpg)

Some more print screens of the master model so far. The hair & eyebrows are stand-ins at the moment, I might change the style/colour completely - I just don't like looking at bald models!

Now, to the pub!

05-01-2005, 05:51 PM
he he.... i like your style dude !

05-02-2005, 04:28 AM

You got a super stylee i love it.

05-02-2005, 05:40 AM
The nostrils appear a little too right in front view, but it's only one small details, I love much this character

05-02-2005, 05:46 AM
haha, love the look of that master! He looks like the type of guy who enjoys tormenting little robots in tutus, well done

05-02-2005, 06:18 AM
hi.....hahahhaa.....he is too funny IMO..

i like his face and specialy his neck..too funny.....any way keep good job,i'm watching....

dont you think he will be more funny if his right eye were a little bigger than the left one??

05-02-2005, 09:10 AM
Thanks for the feedback guys! :D

kmest - I might change his eye shapes when I model his expression & break up the symmetry.

My original intention was to have have his eyes magnified enormously (so they fill up his entire glasses) in the final image.

Just playing with a rough setup of the composition. The deadline has made me resigned to just the one bot in the scene. It does make it easier to put together but I don't think it will read as comically as I had intended...

C'est la vie!

05-02-2005, 09:26 AM
That's can be a good way mate... in any case, a very interesting composition

05-02-2005, 09:33 AM
It's looking great AJ, i like the master face and the composition lighting, i can't wait to see the final result

05-02-2005, 10:14 AM
great entery, love the robots design aswell as the textures,

keep updatin' :)

05-02-2005, 12:08 PM
Nice! I like it. And the Master looks like a good character.

05-02-2005, 12:36 PM
Thanks again for the feedback all!

Here's a quick & dirty PS of some magnified eyes:

It changes the character quite a lot so I'll have to think about whether this is what I'm after. Let me know what you think/prefer...

Once again, thanks! :D

05-02-2005, 01:51 PM
HI AJ, very cool:buttrock: , i like a lot the effect of the camera (the diffuse), is natural. but apply more meshmooth to the master, because he still needed,

05-02-2005, 02:51 PM
AJ Clone her and lose the extra tutu & you got yourself the other one..just rearange him a bit ;) The final compo looks great

05-02-2005, 03:05 PM
Very nice characters man! The old guy is veeery funny :D
Try to find some time to put two robots in your scene, man. Will be great to see some interaction between the robots :)

Keep up the great work,

05-02-2005, 04:59 PM
I vote for TWO of bots! ... you should add some Romance & Drama to the scene!

This reminds me the tale of 'little toy soldier' :)

05-02-2005, 05:08 PM
Bah! Here I am trying to save time & the masses (3 of you) have spoken against me... :scream:

You are all right, the scene would have more dynamic with two bots... I'll see if I can't rustle up a dancing partner from some spare parts.

05-02-2005, 05:56 PM
Great concept, AJ
I'd definitely like to see some magnified/bulging eyes on the 'master' :D I'll see if I can't rustle up a dancing partner from some spare parts. Oh yes!!! that lovely little girl-bot's just crying out for a dancing partner ;)

05-03-2005, 01:00 PM
Hey there Alex!!, great idea the Robot is great...Looking forward to seeing this one finished:thumbsup:

05-11-2005, 09:01 AM
This is a great entry AJ, it has to be one of my favourites in the challenge, for both idea and execution, looking forward to seeing this finished:thumbsup:

jake rupert
05-11-2005, 06:14 PM
This is fantastic. I like the idea and style.
Maybe you should put the camera a bit more from below?

;>) jake

05-12-2005, 05:48 AM
Yet 10 days without update AJ... where are you... end is near... go Mate... GO GO GO...

05-23-2005, 08:50 PM
:(hope you continue that scene anyway!

05-23-2005, 08:57 PM

Another challenge, another unfinished entry...

(I assure you I don't start them with the intention of leaving them like this!)
