Grigorij Eugenievich Sukhov has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Latest Update: Concept Sketch: Inobvious Superiority or The Nature of Power (

Render, but consider it a sketch. A bit different from original sketch composition. But when I pulled all 8 characters togather my PC showed me white flag. So I decided to keep only 4 or 3 characters (2H+2M) or (2H+1M). Yap, I know this image is ugly. But It's just a scketch. (bad rigging, bad lightning, bad compositing e.t.c). Gonna be much better in final image, have no doubt.

Here is some explanations.

The first thing I desided to do is ask my friends some questions about the nature of master, slaves, servants, power e.t.c. Their answer was (in few words) "Master is the one who has the biggest gun", or something like that. I disagreed with them. Because it's not nesessery to threaten someone to gain the power. Here I started to think about "the Nature of Power" part.

THIRST. Power comes from different "places" in different situations. Like, you can put a gun to some ones temple, or become a president (a cheirman, a member of parlament, a cop e.t.c) or be smarter than other people and trick them to gain the power (=become a master =make'em to be your) slaves. In other words power can be "given" or "gained".

SECOND. There is a question: what is Power? Where does it comes from? My answer: There can't be a master without a slave, and there can't be a slave without master. They are connected. BUT, it depends on slave to decide if he/she agrees to be a slave, or not. Slavery also can be "given" or "gained". In any situation a person can refuse to be a slave/servant, even if it will cost him/her a life (or else). So the power is a part of master and a part of slave.

THIRD Here I begun to think about "Inobvious Superiority". Everething is simple here. I just remembered peooles like Spartakus, uprisings in Russia (Pugachov), different revolutions and so on. I was thinking about people who raised against their masters. The Fact: All these MASTERS are didn't expect that, they were too self confident, many of them payd their life for it.

So I wanted to show the complexity of MASTER _ SLAVE relationships. I wanted a complex scene. I don't think too mucj about emotions here, because all of them are obvious, and architypes are sipmple. I'm more interrested in showing these relations as deep and wide as possible.

The situation you can see on the sketch (sorry for quality) is following. There 2 groups of characters: human soldiers and nonhuman soldiers (DT). Nonhuman soldiers have won the big fight and took few POWs. There 3 Nonhuman soldiers (2 privates and an officer). There 5 human soldiers (4 privates and officer). Nonhumans made the human officer to kill one of his soldiers (just for sadistic fun) and trying to make another soldier (private) to kill someone else. Looks like he'll agree after all. The officer is sitting infront of dead soldier, he is in despair (guilt, fear and so on). The main oppositions of the scene are:
Officer vs private:(the first from the left - he holds a knife, looks like he is going to attack non humans, he is not AGREE TO BE a SLAVE, and his officer does)
Group of nonhumans vs group of humans:(one gruop is master, the other is slave - everything is simple)
Nonhuman officer vs nonhuman soldiers:(he is superior, but his power is given, not deserved
he looks like too clean, too aristocratic (not sketched yet) he didn't take part in the fight, but nonhuman soldeirs and human soldiers obeys him (often happens in real life).
Soldier (the first from the left) vs everybody else: He does not obey to enyone in the scene, he is by himsealth (herioic type).

Now I think I'll ann another human character. This character will be expecting a command from herioc type soldier. (Or may be not, I'll think)

Here is how I was starting. I always start modelling characters with splines.
It's just the most logically right way from my pint of view.

I don't think your evil, Actually I think your really talented and thanks for the additional shot of the character.

I like how the flesh from the lower torso wraps around the mechanical breast plate. I also think the legs are very well done in how they go from something recogniozable to human right into something very alien.

Good job buddy. I hope you didn't think I saw you as evil.:D

P.S. did I spot and XSI viewport?:thumbsup:

The chest plate is just armor, it's not integratet into body. (I just don't sure about word "wraps").

Hey suk-grigorij this is fabolous character..I really like and specially I like the face is very strong!!
meybe in the center of neck the texture need just little work, but i'm not sure.

Good, good modeling. I belive the pose could be better, more stable, stronger hold.. You have very tricky composition there, not easy to put it right.. so far you do it great, bravo

вот только у мцжика на шее текстурка немного размазалась вроде, но я уверен, что это временно :) и щетина под носом больно резкую границу имеет, как будто он ее специально выбривает :)

I'm really liking your progress so far and especially impressed with the detailed modeling,Its superb.The only thing you might want to think about now is (pertaining to the one creature with the gun and all the gear) is "are his calves big enough to support the weight of all of it,are his quads big enough?Just nitpicking, other than that it's awesome!

Looks great, and that's a very nice expression you've got going there. Minor thing would be that the teeth look a bit overly simplified, the molars in particular. All depends on how close up we'll see this guy though. Good job so far :thumbsup:

Nope, I don't have a modelling army (I wish I had it).:sad: I just have a lot of free time, about 20 hours per every 24 hours (DAMN! WHY THERE IS NO ENGLISH WORD FOR RUSSIAN "SUTKI"!):shrug: Since a large part of me research is finished now, I'm kinda having real fun here. After all, if you can work night and day making breaks to smoke eat and 4 hours sleep only it's not too hard to model 1 character per 24 hours. In fact it takes alot more time. Hard to make'em all to fit each other (there 8:eek: of them in the scene).

Anyway, I am most greatefull to all of you people. Come often. Any critique is apreciated.

It's a render. But consider it a consept sketch. Just cheking how they "work" together. Strange, but they look very different with different kind of light. Still don't know if it's going to be indoor or outdoor scene.

Here goes the last version of post effects. Don't mind the frame, I'll remove it for final image. I just want to make the scene look like a rapid shot of event. Well, like WW2 film footage, made by soldier-oprator. Not much for Iconic image I guess, but this stuf is serious. I mean, you can replace monsters with humans, and idea wiil be the same. "WAR NEVER CHANGES" you know. If there are fans of FALLOUT (1,2) they'l andersand what style I choosed.

To Dmonk. The job offer is not exactly for me. I just registered at 3d arists site, and they resale every job offer they get to every one registerd. So I didn't apply (I know I'm not good enoght). Now anyone who see this offer on my thread can keep it in mind, and contact EA. I just let every one know that there is potential job for them. Thats it. So there is nothing to congratulate me.:sad: Probably my problems with english is worse than i thought.

Amazing work! I love the caricatures of military archetypes, & the ideas of micro-relationships in the scene. Are these characters going to be fully rigged & poseable? That'd give you freedom to experiment with all sorts of compositions. Maybe your current concept sketch could be modified to have a more dynamic, three dimensional layout (possibly turning into a portrait aspect), with the power structures described not just through body language but also through the character's position in the frame (eg. the dominant ones standing above the prisoners rather than at the same level).

Hi grigorij, nice touch with the post effects too:thumbsup: I think the vertical white lines need some messing up, they're a bit clean at the moment...Be warned, I've read that EA have a really fast turnover of employees... BTW comrade sukhov, your work is of a calibre far and above most artists I've come across... EA would use your creative and modelling skills in a heartbeat man:bowdown: believe it!

when max breaks down 5 times and the work is'n saved, it's very good practice to start all over. But I don't give up :)

I mean the machines are pheeeew, not because you draw them bad, they look great, but scarry.

I used to draw very good. Now I don't have a courage to draw anything. :scream:

the post effects are a nice touch, but personally i think you are losing allot of the impressive texturing. it would make a great wanted poster though..... :thumbsup:

To eddieellis I think Nice piont of view. I think I'll get rid of them after all. Don't want to loose the texture. Now thinking how to keep the cosept of "war photo" without making this post effects.

Just composit some images to the get the look of your original sketch. I know thats obvious, but with work this good you can't hold anything back. Looking forward to your "full" composition. Lets see it.

Yup, like Brent just said you should composite the image in layers, with 2 or 3 layers for the characters. Layering is a really good approach to use for stills since you've got more to tweak with in post. Great work so far :thumbsup:

Hi again Grigorij, I'm starting to understand where you're heading now a lot better...It's all starting to come together here mate! You should go the whole compositing angle as the guys said...I think the scen will work better a bit more crowded. Have you got an environment figured out yet?

hey dude, as this is obviously a future photo, the idea of having black and white is alittle strange as im sure with that high tech cybog technology they would have developed colour photos !.... maybe just trying it with alittle loss of colour instead of black and white ?

its quite a tricky one to be honest... either way its looking sweet mate.

its not just that dude, i just think its a shame to lose all that great texturing... but looks like majority rules, and you should keep on the way your going...

Coming together here. I know the feeling when the box chokes under the pressure :D But it can be an advantage - less is more sometimes. This sketch looks a little "uncomposed"... the couple to the right works really well I think, there's some emotion there, and you get a feeling that there is something going on - while the guys to the center-right are just standing there for no apparent reason... overall I guess you need to get some dynamics into the final composition - - - with models like yours, I doubt that will be a problem, just a matter of coming up with a composition that works, and I have to say that is one of the most difficult things...

Keep it up, I'm really looking forward to see how the final image is going to look!

I just say that you're on a right way to do something really BIG. The spirit of your creation is outstanding. I like the story wchich is unusual and includes considered conclusions. Modeling & texturing present your awsome skills and great imagination.

What can I say, it's great to make our dreams real and show the whole world our considerations. Keep it up cause I'd like to see more :)

By the way, your opinion about max really makes me happy cause it's all I have now and it's good to know that I can create with such a great tool like 3dmax. Good luck!

man that master is looking good,,,not crists as afar as proportions, modeling etc..but the composition leaves alittle to be desired ( i understand its preliminary) i would add a crowd behind them like the entire human race is being pushed to a pen like cattle ore something.....these can simpy be sillouetes painted or whatever...but it seems like this is the kind of master that isnt ****in around...there out to get that job done not one or two at a time but millions at once.....just a thought..also something about the human on the left seems alittle stiff....not a biggie thoug..actually two more would be cool to see the hand of the aliean soldir on the right grabbing that back of the humans head pushing him forward.....and the position of the guns is alitttle similar ..i would change the posish of the one on the left...possible cross is across the humans will seem alittle less oraginsed maybe ,,just breaking up the symetry...mighat do a paint over later..

It really took me some time to be able to go through your thread.
I haver to say that especially your negative character is outstanding!! the mutation to be able to integrate the mechanics into the flesh are VERY good.

You have a sort of Deconstructive futuristic style.. sort of wreckage. but authentically austhetic.
I feel horrible to not have noticed your thread earlier!
Are you planning on sticking to desaturated renders? If so... it seems that your characters could need a bit more noise with a bump or displacement map applied to them.

The modeling/idea/texturing.. even the sketching.. erverything is just fantastic!

Ну блин, класно! Особенно стиль ретро фото... Немного, правда, переборщил с белыми линиями, ну да это я так - капризы :)
Мне напоминает все это стиль дисков с IronMaiden.
Очень хорошо анврвпнуты текстуры! Я как раз начинаю познавать эти инструменты в максе, так что очень любопытно. Да и окуратно... В общем, будет теперь где подглянуть и подучится.

Hey suk-grigori,

You do a greate job in modeling and monster design!!:thumbsup: I have seen your latest post, the problem you mention in your PC can't handle too much character. Maybe you can try do composting with low resolution characters, once you like the composition you can render them in seperate layer. For overlaping characters, you can assign a shader withou spec, difuss color. In maya we call it "surface shader" or "use background". It will let you have alpha to mask out the character. Then you can composite them later. These will allow you import enough characters for your composition. Look forward to see your fantastic job! Cheers
