hello guys,

this is what i m gonna do in this challange. i m not gonna use any space shuttle.well, i m gonna done this challange with spaceship one(Ansary X-prize winner).but mine will little different of this spaceship one.i m using it as a reference.

so this is a little model done so far.i will post complete model soon.
i have completed storyboard.and also find so many reference photos around the net.

okei guys!!
here is an update.
now both ship model complete.i need to texture it.i m not good at texturing but i will try.
ohh and i forget that i m gonna use 3ds max 7 ,combustion 3 and photoshop cs as a tool software.

so here is an update.i completed "spaceshipone" and "whiteknhight carrier".

so give me some reply!!

Your shadows might be a little sharp... there would be a bit of fall off on the shadow, if the object was that high off the ground, Soften it a bit?

Yeah, the shadow is a bit hard. Also, try lowering it's opacity to 50%

thank you all for ur responce.

i was also have same thinking .so i m gonna now do multipass rendering.i will render all differet layer (shadow,specular etc). and think to composite in comustion 3.
so i can have control on each layer.

well let see what i can do more.:)

It looks much better. I think it might need an occlusion pass though.....not for the plane but for darkening areas where the parts of the plane is closest to the ground (like the area between the cockpit and the ground). But that's just nitpicking. Looks good the way it is. :)

Thank tou achamacho actually it;s not composited in combustion.i did try to composite but as i m using mental ray i don't have option to do multipasss rendering using "renderer elements".
so i did render in 3ds max and brought to combustion for grain effect.

plz some one can tell me where can i host quick time movie file?

i did my second shot of which plan gets to take off from ground with is the screenshot. (

Of course you do. It just works a bit differently in MR. Well it depends on the version of Max you have.....6 or 7 have the feature. Anyway MR will render only the element(s) you specify and not all in one go like scanline.

The new pic looks nice too. I don't know of a site that will host movies but if no one else has an idea I can host it for you. Just email me and I'll try to help out.

thanks acamacho.well whenever i need to host movie i will contact u.but my brother also gave me new i will try it first. and about software i already told before that i m using 3ds max 7 and combustion and photoshop as tool software.

well now i have to do some vfx stuff.because after plane takeoff next shot will be go to is the reference movie stuff i m using.

well i remade the spaceship.i added four stands as support of space ship landing.and rerendered all three shot.and yes my entry supposed to be in little fantasy entry.

Also here is the little update i just made.

it is like carrier(spaceship carrier) plane is flying in the sky.and it is shooted from ground with my fourth shot is gonna be from ground camera and next will come from plane camera. (

my dear!!! well i have already thinked about it so i made the stand support to spaceship for landing will make landing like plane makes on runway!!! can u see 4 stand with spaceship in last image!!if now i will post close view.

looks nice you have a clean "ipod-like" look to your planes that is really cool.

I would improve it by unattaching the smoke (i believe it is steam) from the ship. Make it form somewhat behind the plane as it is moving fast. It should probably be less a bulbous line but more of a puffy verry very very lonnng cone or triangle (from camera) which is more and more transparent (look for references of in flight planes as you are trying to mimmick how it appears ona picture). For the puffy look you probably should play with blur in post but get the motion and general color right in you particle package.

I also think you should stay with some noise in your images probably much less, but some to break the digital look. On your first images even if it may have been too much it looked cool. The previous image had a too sharp noise I would say. On the last one this "shocked" me when I first saw the image (thought "where is the noise?").

Remember this is a lighting focused contest, are you 100% positive about your lights?
How is it that the strongest light is coming from under the plane is there a logical explanation (or this is explanied in the whole story)? Is the action happening during sunset? If it is so be careful to show your audience that the lighting is changing or that some time has passed or you could have a continuity break in your film.

And be aware that the 2 last shots you posted (if fixed) should not be edited one after the other or you will have some strange camera flip ( plane going <- and then ->, confusing for the viewer).

well thank you zit2n for r points it will help me and i will try to improve it.

about the smoke, i was also thinking about it and i knew that it supposed to be like long scaled triangle like this <. i m currently also playing with last 2 images it is no noise it is just sample image probably gonna be my next shot. and also this ship carrier plane and spaceship concept is taken from Ansari X-prize winner "scaled" composites "spaceshipone"( i have there many reference images and so many photos i see light comes strongest from bottom..........but i think i m wrong because my flight is taking off in midday but that original flight was took off at sunset evening so there i see strongest light.but i m correcting this soon.

well i m using mental ray as a renderer(in 3ds max7).and i have to use skydome to fake GI and a sunlight.i have no choice i did try to fake gi and sunlight with default scanline render but rendering times goes very slow(it is true way to faking GI).so i m using mentalray skydome.well my machine is fast so i hope to correct this all scene fast.

and my entry is fantasy
once again let's talk about smoke coming from carrier plane?i m little getting confusing.which is better "bloby" look or "steam" like trancperant look?

well no matter i will post update soon.still 27 days left.:wip: yeah i can work it.

EDIT: i m not still happy with last 2 images currently working on it.
and about the 2 different direction of plane.well that's the view from different direction.i don't think it could be any problem but i will try to show best view.

update guys!!!

well i reworked on ligthing and smoke animation.i deleted skdome and faked the GI with direct light.and also worked on smoke particles!!!

Don't forget that if the sunlit Earth is in the field of view, then it will drown out all the stars. The light from the Earth is so much brighter that you won't be able to see the stars at all. The sky seems very black and empty.

Of course, you're doing a fantasy entry, but wouldn't this be considered part of the illumination requirement?

well salden thanks for ur input.but that;s possible only if u on the earth but now it;s my time to look at some reference photos so i can make clear that star can possible to see if sunlit the earth.

but i don't think that we can't see the star from that view.

but anyway i will find reference images to make it clear.

guys i need ur help!!!

i have made each shot(in quicktime format with sorenson video codec) then composed all shot in one quicktime movie.but my file size reaches upto 171 mb. how can i reduce the size of movie without losing the quility?:sad:

I'm not familiar with your rendering software, and without seeing what you've done I can't make any detailed suggestions.

However, you might consider making the scenes shorter, so they are just long enough to show each step of the flight.

The rules say:
It is Recommended that Final movies should be rendered at 320 x 240 or 640 x 480 in Quicktime* format (Sorenson Compression), but other resolutions and formats are allowed. * The animation format is open for discussion.

Recommended means you can post, at least for wips divx movies. 320x240 with mp3 sound should alow you to have a small file size. Yeah it is not the best but it can be of good quality. As for final output ask the boss he for sure has help to bring you as a lot of people must have faced this kind of problem in previous Fxwars ( search the forum first).

About your images, the smoke is way better! Cool! But I am now bugged by the fire (!). I would say you should have the sides of your fire much more blurry, motion blur of course (particles are travelling super fast, no shape detail, just blurry shape). Here they have too much details. And the shape of the fire is a bit strange. Don't you think it should be big near the plane and small when it gets away.
I am also facing the problem of "in space exterior" shot references and I will have to look for scientific references or make some guesses and assumptions.

well i remade the flame particles animation. i gave them more motion blur and little much glow in combustion.also i m trying to reduce file size with divx codec but i m losing quality when i apply grain effect on that divx codec file.

i hope u all understand me!!

i have done total 17 shots for 2 mins movie that's why size goes so high in quicktime.and also there is the rule that final mov format will have done with sorenson codec.finally i have to used divx movie so ppl can download my movie.
animation is totally too long(2 mins) took around 18 or 23 days to finish completly!!!

Some tip:

out of the earth, in the space, there is no oxigen, so there are no visible flames, and no soft shadows ;) because there is no atmospher filter.
I know that Hollywood, show that in movies, Kubrik in 2001:space odissy, show the right :thumbsup:

actually i forgot to mention the software!!
i have used 3ds max for animation and particle stuff.then i used combustion 3.0 for post production.
yeah u r right about the flame..........but i have seen this "spaceship one" original movie in which flame burns in the space.
