the final image, I've tried to incorperated some foreground, but the intensity is too much, so i've to leave the foreground untouched. Thank for all the comments :: the best critique session i've got so far, you guys are very supportive.

I'll try to design some armour on the character to enhance the visual.

03-29-2005, 07:32 AM
Younger face! yeah!
the old pics kinda too old, i've manage to make his face looks 10years older, in his late 20s

03-29-2005, 10:50 AM

Im moving on to the tiger anatomy now, I've added some shoulder pads and hand protector to add more detail.

03-29-2005, 10:55 AM
Wow, I really like your idea! Good luck in the challenge!

03-29-2005, 11:50 AM

04-01-2005, 02:16 AM
very powerful lines and pic ... good stuff  .. the front paw seems whacked, but it's early

04-01-2005, 03:40 AM
Great lineart man! Would be nice have a deep jungle as background!what you think?
Good work man!! keep it!

04-01-2005, 04:20 AM
thanks for the comments guys, I'm moving into coloring now, bit by bit,
by the way, the rainforest background is exactly what i have in mind, im still
searching for the right atmosphere...

04-01-2005, 06:42 AM
i try to produce the color key for the overall picture, seems to early for that, but its a good exercise for me though :)

04-01-2005, 07:48 AM
i really like the motion in this. i think it'll be a great piece once you've detailed the background and finished painting it. :buttrock: keep it up!

04-01-2005, 03:47 PM
This image rooks. The concept is great and I'll definetely stay tuned to your thread

Great work so far. i like the flow and the alloverimpression of your work as well as the colors now that appear niceley and in a good harmonic way.

the tiger stronly remindsme frazzeta's "banth", never the less great piece and cool style. so have fun and best luck, cheers

Looking really good. I really like the scowl on the rider in the b/w painting. However it seems to get lost in the color version. Try and push the darks in his face. Can't wait to see more.

04-04-2005, 01:44 AM
Thank guys! thank for the support, especially from the masters ( otai ) here in cgtalk.
I've been thinking a lot about the transtition from b+w to color and been searching for the right environment .At last i've decided to study Tarzan (disney) env. which is very rich in color and atmospehe, phew..

wish me luck guys.

here's the updates

04-05-2005, 12:29 AM
hi, working on the main figure now, I cant wait to finish this piece.

04-06-2005, 01:18 AM
my early invention of the full armour, its too enclosed, so i torn down the upper parts.
less is more + the humidity in the tropical rainforest is very high.

04-06-2005, 01:32 AM
another sketch, focused on the clothing and armour, i should post this earlier, sorry,

04-06-2005, 01:45 AM

my coloring w.i.p,
I've decided to approach the painting in three sections, namely background, human figure and the tiger,
the whole environment will be setup later on,since i want to concentrate on the man figure first

04-06-2005, 02:53 AM
Great concept and great painting! A detail I definitely like is his left glove. The finished piece can just be cool. :) Nothing bad to say about it.

04-06-2005, 03:17 AM
great concept mate. i love how you made the figure cant wait for backdrop and every other elemnt to go along with him.

04-06-2005, 04:50 AM
to me there are some mistakes in the muscles those make him seem unnatural and kinda plastic.
take care of them and he will seem more realistic i think. well.. instead of realistic, more "human".
take care. it's coming out nice

04-06-2005, 01:21 PM
Nice touch with them being up in amongst the trees......don't forget to put the frightened gibbon's hiding behind branches!!

I like it

04-06-2005, 02:02 PM
How come i didn't see this before. Anyway, nice piece dude. Love the emotion, posture, and the post of both the tiger and man. Good colour contrast and your piece has a very fresh and interesting look to it. Keep it coming dude.

04-06-2005, 04:09 PM
Well done, some amazing richness in colors, body language of the characters... everything. You should be careful not to overwork it with too much detail later on, I think the piece's best asset is its vividness and dynamics...
Great work, keep it up. :)

04-06-2005, 04:43 PM
Excellent !!! What a great design!!! I like it a a lot :)

everythin is cool, your sketches, your ideas, your tiger, and armor researchs.... It's shame I haven't seen it before !

04-06-2005, 05:14 PM
Really excellent work!
I wish u good luck:)

04-06-2005, 05:27 PM
Great work so far. . you're got a good concept and nice colour sceme. Your piece is really comming along, one of the better ones I've seen (and there are alot of good 2d images). I think your concept sketches are cool, especially the inked sketch (with the mask). it would be nice to see that guy painted as well. Alexi

04-06-2005, 06:38 PM
whoa..i havent seen yours before. great colours and colouring skills...

04-06-2005, 11:16 PM
Oooooooh! This is looking mighty fine... great composition and colours. I especially like the character design. Very nice. Will check back for updates...

04-06-2005, 11:21 PM

Hi! Thank for all the comments guys, I hope to learn more from the pro's,. I'm working at a very slow pace now, still trying to detailed the main character without disturbing the surroundings.

There are two main weapons, the spear at the back and the 'Kris'(dagger) at the middle section. I,m gonna insert more weapons, but I'm afraid that he will become a walking circus,hmm..

again, thank for the comments.

04-08-2005, 01:39 PM
Nice work man just watch what you do with the background looking a bit lost and competiting with the fore ground with your recent color choices.

04-08-2005, 02:42 PM
Great coloring style..
Excellent job!!

04-09-2005, 02:52 AM
Looking good. I agree with an earlier post about the muscles, try softening them up just a tad, maybe texture up that costume a little, it looks a little clean...but then again you're just really getting started.

On the tiger, watch that front leg and paw. I know the the curve you're trying to keep, but that anatomy is a little too tweaked out. I'd bring it back a little more, right now its too forced. Keep up the awesome work, I'll stay tuned in!

04-11-2005, 01:56 AM
thanks guys! i'll do my best to keep the page concistence,I'm moving to the tiger now,
I have minimum understanding of the tiger anatomy and I've decided to study more since i still have the time to do that,

I appreciate all of your comments dude! A LOT! I'll try my best to bring out the best! ganbate!

Here's my latest update

04-11-2005, 06:46 AM
I love the signs on the tiger's head !!! brillant

04-12-2005, 06:40 AM
i must say that this is my favorite so far. technically it is very well rendered

04-12-2005, 11:59 AM
the painting of the body of the man is excellent, good work, i wait the suite

04-12-2005, 12:05 PM
make sure u submit that last wip through the cgalk server.

i'm diggin the whole thing, luv the tiger the most, brilliant

04-12-2005, 04:24 PM
I really like the colors u have gone with here. They just feel soft...and that appeals to me. I also like the color pallette. I know i should b posting crits here but i really dont have none. Ok i got one now. Dont! get a big head now that i said all these nice things coz i wouldnt want it to ruin ur work. So keep thinking its crap and u will be on ur way to a killer piece.

All da best

The tiger are giving me a headache! but it's good because i'm learning new thing's now. Yeah! sweet..

This is my latest aproach to the overall composition, I've decided that the front paw shouldn't touch the border since it's better to have an invisible frame in the overall pic.

Plus, the front paw is really challenging! this is my current decision, for now. I really need hard crit on the tiger, thanks!

04-13-2005, 02:45 AM
very powerfull image, the tiger looks great at such an early stage...The abs of the man are a little too pronounced(they work)...But gorgeous colours...more, more...

04-13-2005, 06:01 AM
i like your color, ur shamans realy cool. a little suggestion on the tiger...his eyes looks a little gentle, maybe a scowl to make it fiercer, the anatomy...hmmm... no suggestions as of now. great work though. good luck!

04-13-2005, 07:08 AM

best regards: KornÚl

04-13-2005, 07:19 AM
nice looking sketches, love the guy expressions

04-13-2005, 04:20 PM
Man, your rendering style is lovely. Really, just simply lovely.
Great stuff, I look forward to seeing the whole piece come together. Don't stress it, you have plenty of time!

04-13-2005, 05:04 PM
cool update. the tiger is looking great and good call on the paw and changing it's position.
I agree with ARKINET about the eyes though. The tiger does look very gentle. Keep it update. I'll check back again.

04-13-2005, 05:16 PM
Good details starting to emerge on the guy, and the tiger looks powerful and furry, like all good tigers should be. I'm not keen on his claws, though, they should be narrower and sharper. Unless it's not a "real" tiger, in which case there's an opportunity for some creative markings and other fantasy-type additions. The tiger's eyes should be narrowed, too, so that he looks m*e*a*n*

i think its looking really good, but it seems there might be something strange going on with the lower jaw of the tiger. i cant quite place my finger on it, but when i hold my hand up to screen to cover from the lower lip down, the proportions seem more natural. i dont know, maybe i'm crazy.

04-13-2005, 07:17 PM
maybe make it like a saber tooth, u know, more savage looking, just a thought...

04-13-2005, 08:50 PM
hye mate . .. are you using references for the tiger??? The jaw is way too big. I am not entirely sure about the body either.... the back i thing would have more of a shoulder blade stikng out for the leg that is behind... hmm. maybe u are suing a ref and it is spot on but i ahve drawn quite a few tigers and it just needs a sslight alteration to my eyes, but the face is excellent, just the draw that is a problem.... love the idea thopugh and your painting is really good

04-13-2005, 09:04 PM
.... the back i thing would have more of a shoulder blade stikng out for the leg that is behind...

i agree w/ will, since it is a crouching tiger(hiding dragon:D *lol)... maybe make the shoulder blade a little pronounce... though m not really an authority on that issue, just a thought...

04-14-2005, 08:15 AM
Thanks guys! please be informed that all of your suggestion are being consumed into my creativitywhirlpool..ahaha, Coming back to the tiger, I have to compose difrrent pictures to follow the previous skecthes. I'm still struggling to find a perfect match for the current pose, plus the tiger are larger than normal (and i'm thinking of he-man type tiger).

Regarding the front paw size, I find it very difficult to make it in the usual scale because of the perspective view on the over all picture, One thing i agree though, the EYES! i have to changed that! it looks like a sleepy tiger now and the jaw too.

Actually I've composed the head using two difrrent picture, guess that did'nt go very well,
Back to the drawing tablet!

going back to My super-saiyan now!bzzzzttt! :D

04-14-2005, 10:36 AM
That is a pretty hard perspective...but looking good!
There is something about the head though....doesn't fit with the rest of the body...but
I can't figure out what it is. Maybe it's the chin. too long?

Well anyways great work so far!

04-14-2005, 10:40 AM
dude, u cant really expect us to crit on the tiger, i mean think about it it is made in ur own style , looks majestic and dynamic and all in all perfect, now what happens if im a dead on realist and go yappin away on how te lower jaw looks too long and the tigers position too lizardlike, it just doesnt work like that the fact is that it fits the picture perfectly:thumbsup:

04-14-2005, 02:26 PM
Great work man, Here is a link to a site that has hundreds of good tiger pics.
Hope it helps.
Keep up the great art.

04-14-2005, 03:36 PM
Wow.. this is gorgeous... your rendering style is amazingly textured for digital, the way you've got such a fuzziness on the tiger is jaw dropping. I personally lov the tiger, apart from perhaps the claws, which should maybe be a bit narrower and tapered, but the face and eyes are what made me stop and stare. Perhaps the master should have some more eye catching elements, because at the moment the tiger is stealing the limelight! (which is a good thing in my book). The fluidity of the cat is amazing , as are the intersecting lines on the trees. I can't wait to see this finished, it's stunning.

04-14-2005, 03:37 PM
great work! i love the tiger! keep up!

04-14-2005, 03:44 PM
This I like, the tiger looks great, and I must compliment you on the perspective.

04-22-2005, 03:34 AM

I've beeen busy lately, haven't got the time to work on this piece, thank for the links + critique. The link is very useful and inspiring (thanks 3D cook)( there's no excuse 4 me now..ahahah)

I'll try to keep on track next week! chiow!

04-22-2005, 04:55 AM
Apa khabar fellow Malaysian!
This piece of yours looks freaking awesome. Everthing seems to be coming together perfectly. I especially love the line of action on the tiger. Good Job!

04-22-2005, 05:32 AM
Wow, dude! You have very powerful work going on! :  Unfortunately, I don't have any advices to give you :I It's really coming out nicely :)

04-22-2005, 12:27 PM
It begins to turn really great.

Impatient to see more.

04-26-2005, 12:55 AM

I'm trying to apply the tiger fur texture, plus controlling the level of detail on the shaman figure. The overall detail between the thre main objectives (trees, man and tiger) must compliment each other in order to achive a harmony environment. An overdone or too little detail will resulted unbalace in the force, oh yeah, my starwars fever has begun

04-26-2005, 12:59 AM
details, mainly on the tiger and shaman.

04-26-2005, 02:26 AM
incredible details  , but I think if you can bring the backgraound into the foreground your drama elevates, you know some vines shadows.

you might be already planning that, I'm just suggesting when you refine your background more... beautiful btw...

04-26-2005, 03:03 AM
This is looking good dude. I like the details and the way it's painted. Just a small suggestion, about the tiger's expression, it's still looking to nice at the moment. Maybe lower the eye brows more, you know, that grin expression, to get that i'm a bad arse cat so don't mess with me look :D LOOKING AWESOME DUDE.

cheers

04-26-2005, 03:34 AM
yo man... this is sick. you have some serious skill. the lighting, the lines, the colors..much respect to you I think that it would be a cool Idea for you to add the yellow rays of light coming in through the jungle top. I think that this would add more mood to it. though this is already good as it is. any way...wow. I love the concept, the costume design all of it portrays your talent

05-03-2005, 12:42 AM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/6775/6775_1115080941_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/6775/6775_1115080941_large.jpg)

working on the background now, I have to sync the amount of detail between foreground and background. the amount of detailing i've put on the main figure seems to pressure the overall picture to be in the same level of accuracy. I've tried to blend some of the trees into enviromental fog, but it seem fake and doest match the whole package.

05-03-2005, 12:48 AM
roots detailed, most of the techniques i've used for this exercise are meant to enhance the root complexity and to cast more shadow and depth on the trees.

05-03-2005, 07:42 AM
Apa Ini?! M.Nasir?Hahahahh... Good job here can't imagine i missed this. Now the tiger looks fearful now. The detail you are working now on the background is encouraging love to see it finish. But don't rush man you've go lotsa time.

05-04-2005, 10:58 AM
Looks great! I really like the changes you've done on the background, what I miss though is some shadows striking on the tiger and his master riding it. After all it's a jungle right? I'd imagine some strong shadows of the upper roots and leaves on your characters would help them blend in the enviroment. (Expect if you'd want them to come out from a clearing into the light..)

Keep it up!

05-05-2005, 09:55 PM
man this looks so badass.

05-08-2005, 06:01 PM
Very great progress. your piece comes together very nicley, and your details simply rok! keep it Up!

05-08-2005, 06:06 PM
This is gonna be one of my favourite:eek: , it has a malaysia culture in it, best of luck dude! this is gonna rock all the way :buttrock:,i'm sure it'll b in the finalist!!, gogogo!!!:bounce:

05-09-2005, 01:30 AM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/6775/6775_1115602228_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/6775/6775_1115602228_large.jpg)

At last, I,ve manage to detailed the background and closing all of the remainings viods. The trees always been a hassle, instead of using normal brush, I\'ve customised a leaf brush pattern and modified the brush scatterred option to achive the volume and fullness of the foliage.

The tweaked vines in the centre are what i\'ve used to since I\'ve been studying acasia trees for their complex roots and veins.

Plus, in this picture i\'ve manage to replace the previous mountain backdrop to a mystical malay palace ( note the overlapping gable roof ). I\'ve dedicated this picture to the search of a missing GelanggiCity ( Kota Gelanggi )which also known as the BlackCity. Guarded by the shaman, who has the power to summon his servant and loyal companion, the mystical beast known as BaelangTareoung which bear the sacred kaerawang emblem.

That all , for now...I\'m going to add-up the light effect after this, thaks for all the comments and suggestion.

05-09-2005, 02:43 AM
Hehe, that's a long arse title dude :argh:
Anyway, no critzs, i enjoy watching your progress and this piece looks awesome. The jungle detailing and the characters looks SWEEET

cheers dude

05-09-2005, 12:33 PM
Hi kromosom, good work, very rich in colors and the composition are
very good, just perhaps some completion on the leg before tiger and
tree would have increased its quality.

05-10-2005, 10:35 AM
NICE!! I love the tiger. its seems to me, that the images is too pure. every color is its own and of its own. like roots are a distinct color brown. and the vegetation is a distinct brown. nto that this is a bad thing. I think that your painting is so sick. but I also believe that it would add to the greatness if you tried playing around with the photofilter affect in layer adjustments. But man. this is hella good.

05-10-2005, 10:49 AM
Good good!! that's going to be finished.. Maybe for your final image you should try to blur the background in order to accentuate the mains caracters...keep it up!:)

05-10-2005, 02:53 PM
Your piece is awesome! You'r a really skilled artist, but I think the new background it's maybe overdoing it - makes it difficult for me to read your image.. I think. I liked the previous concept better (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/6775/6775_1114476928_large.jpg), which made the image read better.. aswell as my focus went straight to the master and his servant (tiger), which after all is the theme of this contest.

Hope I've not offended you in any way, this is just how I felt when I looked at it. :) I'm sure that whatever you decide to do it will look great in the end! Good luck!

05-10-2005, 05:25 PM
Very nice painting kromosom:eek:, I like the colours and the way you paint your characters! Good luck for the final result.

05-11-2005, 06:24 PM
Hey hey dude! Where have u been? Great to c u here!! :)

WOW! thoose lightbeams really helped! :) Looking great!

05-14-2005, 12:27 AM

the final image, I've tried to incorperated some foreground, but the intensity is too much, so i've to leave the foreground untouched. Thank for all the comments :: the best critique session i've got so far, you guys are very supportive.

Hi Kromosom! This looks great on batik! After this contest, perhaps you could print it on batik and give them out to your family and friends (and give one to me :D)

The pahlawan looks very traditionally macho! The tiger posed like a reptile, making it less common. My only crit is that the depth of the background is not clear enough (it appears almost flat) but because I thought of batik designs upon seeing this, I think it would be quite alright instead.

All the best to you, fellow Malaysian!

WOW! By far my favorite composition! Very strong base drawing and strong colors, very intense, very nice:)

Great perspective dragging and colors! I love the values in this as well, great range and the details of the tree & spanish moss make it so much more interesting. The only changes I would have made is to make the man slightly more dynamic and also insert some faded, high-key blueish trees in the background to suggest further trees.

Apart from that, I really like this pic. Good luck!
