Latest Update: Final Image: Final image
04 April 2005, 12:30 PM
After having some ideas and concepts about a little girl and robot/mech I discovered that other had the similar ideas. So I started on some new ideas, and this is the result.
The idea behind the image is that the "puppet master" controls two dragons with theese magical threads, I have still not sketched in the second dragon though. I see some space limitations there, could be a problem.. but then I just have to MAKE space :)
Good luck to you all!
04 April 2005, 12:32 PM
magical threads eh?? i had a similar idea, not for this challenge, but for a story i'm making.
anyway great sketch,i can just make it out ,a guy on top of the dragon.i luv the guys fingers haha.
i'll be waiting for more.
04 April 2005, 04:03 PM
So I arranged a dragon that is closer to the camera in the front. The front dragon has no wings, and is a different type of dragon from the other (moves more like a snake in the air). There is a reason why I have not sketched his left hand btw. as you can see his mouth is wide open, and I plan to make him spit fire. So no need for his right hand.
Otherwise I notice that I have forgotten to sketch the dragon in the back's left right hand. Will fix that later.
Any comments on the composition of the image? Perhaps I will try to make some new thumbnails of this from other positions in the same poses however.. We'll see what I have time to do. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the sketch.
04 April 2005, 04:10 PM
i'm satisfied too looks great
04 April 2005, 04:20 PM
good concept sketches dude. i like the poses of both the dragons and the human character.
04 April 2005, 06:46 PM
looks good am7. very nice concept. and since you helped me. lets see if i can help you.
-with the figure foreshortened as is, should the dragon placement be reversed. as in the side of the master rider coming forward should be on the dragon most forward. jus seems odd he is coming towards us on the recessed dragon.
-not sure what to do with the wings...just keep them on which ever dragon is in the back like you have. plus, i would like to see the serpentine dragon body a little. keep both dragons in fluid motion together. they are servants after all....and he is in complete control.
hope this helped. a little if at all. looking good. i'll check up on you later. goodluck.
04 April 2005, 06:53 PM
Hm, dragons, always interesting to draw, jet never boring. I like them, thou I think you should make them more scariier (maybe wider open jaws, and more sharp teeth). It's fine thou, keep it up.
My master & Servant 2d
04 April 2005, 09:59 AM
noob!, arc80: thanks!
misledtomisery: Yep! I had already flipped the "master" controlling the dragons horizontal, since I discovered the same thing! :) I am however very grateful to your comments about the serpentine dragon. I will try to define the movements of that dragon better, trying to balance the flow of the other dragon! Keep thoose critism comments coming people! it really helps.
THE wizard: yep, I kinda agree.. both dragons are kinda passive atm. However since it's a sketch I will develop further sketches on details on how thei'r appearances may look. Same goes for the human master controlling them. So they should soon have some personality, either more scarier or more mystical, time will tell!
04 April 2005, 03:37 PM
So I've changed a couple of things as you can see, I also did put a simple grey shading on my sketch in order to be able to read the silhouette of the image better. I will start doing some concepts of the character next.
04 April 2005, 03:47 PM
Oh, a friend of mine commented on this. That the composition of it worked better the way it was before, so here is a horizontal-flipped version. I kinda agree with him. :)
04 April 2005, 04:10 PM
yep looks better flipped,noice!!!
keep it up!
04 April 2005, 08:09 AM
Nice concept, dude.
Love the way the master is almost sky surfing atop the dragons. Particularly like the stylistic way you deal with the foreshorting of the arms and hands.
(oh by the way, thanks heaps for the comments you made on my illustration!) :)
04 April 2005, 08:29 AM
very interesting sketch, nice figure by the way, keep it up!
04 April 2005, 10:21 AM
I agree, this composition is a lot better. What's going to be at the background?
My master & servant entry (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=224331)
04 April 2005, 10:26 AM
Prolouge of the dragon master:
As a young girl, her family was killed by the emperor's evil troops corrupting the country. She served several years as the emperor's servant, until one day the emperor brought captured dragons for amusement. Every time they where near her, she felt a strong connection with the dragons. Though she did not know it at the time, she had a very special spirit. Awakened by the dragons strong spiritual presence, her inner dragon-spirit rised and awakened!
No longer would she serve as the emperor's servant! Enter the ancient tales of the dragon master!
(Oh, and please ignore my typo's! My english skills are not that good yet. And yes her facial expression on the final image will display alot more rage and authority, just getting a decent view on how she would look like before she was awakened by her spirit in this concept.)
Arc80: If I go with this idea, then you will se the emperor's kingdom set on fire in the background. But not sure yet, perhaps I will make the dragon master a male (maybe a samurai or something)? Thou this idea was one of the first that came to my mind.
04 April 2005, 10:46 AM
I really love your conceptsketch, great idea! I'll be watching
04 April 2005, 10:55 AM
Thanks! I think maybe my idea isn't that original, but I like the concept I've made so I've started coloring it now. Will show some color WIP's later today or tomorrow.
04 April 2005, 11:02 AM
Dragon rider! cool concept!
04 April 2005, 12:04 PM
Yep, here is my final lineart/sketch, I will now start some coloring.
04 April 2005, 12:08 PM
Yep, so I've started with some basic ground colors.. and also had some fun with rendering some details on the front dragon. Still not sure on what to do with the background.. I was thinking blue cold night with moon and stars (see the reflection of the stars on the dragon's front nails), and some skies above the dragon master.
But perhaps I should try a more brownish skyscheme, and smoke coming from the bottom like something is set on fire.
We'll see how it works out, oh.. and I'm still not sure if I'll make the rider male or female, I will decide on it when It comes to painting him/her.
04 April 2005, 08:48 PM
wonderfully done on the geisha character sketch. I like that she has this innocense kinda look, but you know she can woop your arse. The progress on your piece is also getting there. I can see those details on one of the dragons and the fire breathe is coming out nicely. Hey, one of the dragon has a ring, cool (is that how you are going to show the connection between them). Just a thought, have you ever thought of makin the other dragon kind of like an ICE Dragon, hehe.
Personally, i like the Geisha character being a master. There's something original about it.
For the background, a cityscape is not a bad idea. It can strenghten and support the storytelling a lot better.
04 April 2005, 11:44 PM
G' day, howz life?
Your pic is looking very nice indeed , I love dragons!
I will be keeping an eye on this one!
04 April 2005, 02:02 AM
impressive start mate,great geisha piecehttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/love.gif
i like it where this piece has a nice composition sense, the pose of the guy ontop reminds me of 'twelve' in SF 3rd strike.keep it rockinghttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif
I will be keeping an eye on this one!
04 April 2005, 08:26 PM
So, I've worked a couple hours on the character today. Think I'm going with a female master afterall :) It just felt right.
I like the expression on her face, but I'm not happy with my rendering of it, so I will probally repaint it later. But this should do for now, so I should try focus on blocking in some more color on the other dragon, and fixing her right leg (the leg on the left side of the image)
Arc80: thanks! I might yet bring more white color into her face, so she's more similar to the geisha concept. We'll see how it works out, about the ring.. she's not controlling the dragons by that. She will have magical threads connected with the dragons spirits, which she is controlling them by.
jsn: thanks man! I'm also facinated by dragons, they are mystical and magical creatures :)
ms@zx: twelve in SF 3rd strike? please give me a link to what that is :) I haven't heard of it before, it's a comic?
04 April 2005, 08:28 PM
looking great man!
04 April 2005, 08:33 PM
hiya! i love the colours, they are very nice, and harmonious..but her hand is what confuses me. its a bit odd.. i know she's holding threads, but i think there's something wrong with her fouth finger..maybe a bit too big. but i like the rest. keep up the good work!
04 April 2005, 10:46 PM
i'm not sure about the woman's anatomy but i like the dragon. good luck :)
04 April 2005, 03:40 PM
I agree. :) I will rework the entire character as soon as I get time.. really busy with other stuff atm.
04 April 2005, 04:09 PM
Cool, i'm really liking your character, but she is looking more like a dude to me. I think it's because of the odd anatomy and i agree about the finger. I really like the colour choice on her and she blends very well with the dragons. i'll be checking later.
04 April 2005, 05:12 PM
Not that much time left! But I've seen so many other dragon concepts around in this challenge.. and I wanted to do something original.
So I've decided to go with a new idea, this young boy surfing a giant seaturtle. Splashing water all around as his giant body hits the water, and dolphins jumping around.
My scanner is really bad, so I'm sorry for the low quality of theese sketches. They'r really just to help me out with the shapes of the different characters in this new concept. I will make thumbnail sketches of the composition by the end of this week, and post them. So please pick you'r favorite then, and feel free to give some useful critics. :)
As for you that love the dragon concept.. fear not, I guess I will finish it later. Just not for this challenge.
04 April 2005, 08:07 PM
So, i did a small thumbnail. Not sure about the composition in this yet. But I've kinda captured the depth and motion in this thumbnail sketch. I'm not sure about the little boy's pose either, I imagined he was waving a cowboy hat. But I think instead he should be standing and kinda "surfing" that big turtle (like the pose from my dragon concept), controlling the sea creatures with magic from his fingers.
I will also add sealions, seasnakes and other mysterious sea creatures. It'd be great if you guys would mention some sea creatures that are interesting, if I've forgot something.
*EDIT* I might try a perspective where the camera is alot closer to the boy, looking down on him raging on his giant turtle. The challenge would be to keep the same scale and motion though.
04 April 2005, 08:49 PM
turtle? its been done....twice...think of another creature and i'll get back to u
04 April 2005, 07:12 AM
Hehe! Crap! What if he's riding a big whale?
04 April 2005, 12:56 PM
sounds great to me! or u cud have him riding a giant scorpion.
heh.it can still be based in the sea,but it doesn't have to be a sea creature...
04 April 2005, 09:51 AM
New concept today that I will work on all day. So I'd expect to have my lineart ready this evening. Time will tell if it works out. I'm going a totally different direction with this now, and it's alot more humerous. Though, I'm worried that my concept will not be that obvious a "master & servant" directive.. but I think I will try to bend the theme abit, and hope for the best :) (My concept is more of a master & apprentice now, though it could be considered as the same thing as an master and servant I guess)
04 April 2005, 02:08 PM
So I was kinda busy yesterday, but I managed to continue on my new concept today. My new idea is not that original either, but I've always been facinated by pirates. And since I've also always wanted to paint a pirate theme painting - here I go! :)
The idea is this pirate woman as the master of all theese small crazy monkeys (which ofcourse are her servants). And to make it all abit more interesting, I'm adding a couple of skeletons that are opposing them.
I've marked the two of the golden mean points on the picture (circle with G inside - (G)). The monkey attacking the skeleton to the right is also in a golden mean point, though the main focal point should be the pirate woman. So I'm asking if you guys think I should move her abit up and to the left? I will also use the perspective and framing objects (ropes from the ship etc) to frame the focal point to her anyway, so perhaps it's not needed?
Oh, and no references used for this.. so there might be alot of proportion-errors? Please drop an reply if you spot any (even though it's still early in my lineart development)
(I'll keep updating!, the deadline moves in fast!)
04 April 2005, 02:53 PM
Interesting concepts everyone of them. Dragon master composition is most appealing to me so far, but I'm interested to see what you pull out from your new one. You just should block out the whole composition and it would be easier to give suggestions :)
04 April 2005, 04:40 PM
Been rather busy lately, but I managed to sit down 3 good hours today for some effective rough coloring. The composition is almost done, I'm thinking of adding some more monkeys far in the back, and perhaps some more ropes.. leading the focal point to the important objectives in my image.
Please comment on composition, color scheme etc. I always appreciate some good critiscm. :)
04 April 2005, 05:15 PM
wohw, check you out. You did change yours too. Well, both of them looks good. I even like the thumbnai on the turtle idea. I like the composition on this one and colours. I know it's work in progress, but just watch out for the arms. They are a little short. Other than that, it looks good and i like that it has a humorous quality to it. Reminds me of Monkey Island video game. I really like those monkeys by the way. Good style. will be back for more
04 April 2005, 07:38 PM
i like it! it reminds me of "the curse of the monkey island" game! lookin good so far! ill keep an eye on u!:)
04 April 2005, 08:24 PM
Arc80: thanks man! Yep, I will be watching thoose arms, probally try to correct the foreshortening on my next color update. Oh, and I do hope you are refering to The secret of monkey island, (number 1) which is my alltime favorite game. I remember I bought it when I was 13, such good memories, and it sure has inspired me I think! The girl may have some similarities to govenor elaine. :)
calisto: Thanks! I love Bill tillers artwork on cmi, also an excellent game. :)
04 April 2005, 06:04 AM
when I see your work I'm feeling good! Some times, I work realistic style but...I turned back to cartoon style! That what's I love!
And this week-end I do it!!
My girl friend love the dragon with the girl, she would like to see finished.
Your laste work remind me Guybrush Threepwood of Secret of Monkey Island
Keep your work like that and good luck.:bounce:
04 April 2005, 06:15 PM
Some changes to the perspective, and I've made alot of improvements I think. I've just splashed some black dots on where I'm gonna place my 3 last monkeys, so don't bother on that.. it's just to make an better overview of the composition I'm going for, so you can critic on. I will have alot of action going on down in the picture, skeletons fighting other members of this pirate womans crew, or more monkeys.
Taking a break now for a few days, to get a fresh mind, and work on some new ideas on the poses of the 3 last monkeys.
Tekila: haha, thanks! actually it's supposed to be a woman.. :D I love you'r style aswell, and I agree ones own unique style is better than realistic. Some people think we draw it stylished because we can't draw realistic. But in fact I find it very very hard to draw stuff stylized and with a more of cartoony or personal touch. One must know how to exaggerate on the right stuff, and still make it look beliving.
04 April 2005, 06:22 PM
nope...sorry,ur not allowed to take a break,NO BREAKS!
hehe,nice so far man!
04 April 2005, 06:33 PM
Interesting composition! I love the monkey playing around. But the only thing that's matter me is the skeleton, Are you planning to put the other one in the background?
04 April 2005, 11:31 PM
hey I just love your ideas! I like each one!
The colors on your latest concept are great! And I also like the composition.
I'm keeping an eye on this thread
Noob: haha, thanks! but I have an exam, that I need to pass coming up at this friday. But I will come back kicking ass this weekend! :scream:
FIDUCIOSE: Thanks! I'm not entirely sure of what you'r asking.. but If I understood it correctly - I will draw more skeletons in the background beneath them yes. Perhaps fighting some of her pirate crew.
Goro: Thanks man! Nice to get such good feedback from you, you'r concept is my favorite of this contest! Make sure you finish it! :)
I will work some on my main character next, she looks abit to much "guyish" atm. So some well rounded lips, and long hair will help I think. Having problems figuring out the pose of the closest monkey jumping to attack the skeleton in the foreground, but I guess I will work something out this weekend! The deadline is getting closer, good luck to you all!
05 May 2005, 03:20 PM
LOL Its so weird to see Guybrush Threepwood with a woman's asset! I think why we think of her as a man is because in the latest monkey island games (the Curse of Monkey Island & Escape from Monkey Island) Guybrush looked exactly like that! Maybe add lipstick and make her hair slightly longer. And yes, some sexy mascara will do ;). I think her boobs is too low down as well.
Is this your intention to have a concept like Monkey Island in the first place?
the overall colour scheme and mood is nice!
All the best!
05 May 2005, 03:27 PM
lykke til videre. go norge
Wops! suddenly realized that I had to post my lineart. So here it is, though I'm chaning alot now when I'm coloring it.
This version shows two different poses of the pirate girl. I'm not sure on which one I should evolve on. Please let me know which one you think works best.
As you can see I've also made her more looking like a woman than before, and started to shape up her face, aswell as some changes to make her a bit cooler.
I'm still not doing details yet however, cause I'm painting this in 800xWIDTH, cause otherwise my computer is really slow when working in 3000x3000px res. But as soon as I've got the pose right, and shapes of the other monkeys I will start doing details.
jeromoo: haha! hopefully she will look more like a woman now :)
eparts: takk for kommentarene! Som du ser har jeg ordna på det du nevnte. :wise:
05 May 2005, 07:39 PM
haha ... i love monkey island ... cool entry am7 :D
i prefer the left one ... it looks like the action is taking place very high up on the mast ( or whatever its called in english ) and the left has more climbing in it
both are cool but i prefer the left... as in the right one she looks a bit unbalanced gripping that rope behind her ( wich seems a bit far away somehow ) ..it looks as if she was grabbing down behind her..
hehe these little apes look really cool :D
05 May 2005, 07:53 PM
Definately the left one. It looks more correct base on her gesture. Hey, how about giving her a nice smirk kinda expression :argh: oooh, oooh, and add more of those awesome monkeys, hehehe.
05 May 2005, 08:02 PM
The right one will make her loosing balance... i kinda suggest if the gal can round up the cutted rope around her wrist...then, the Right concept will be even cooler than the Left one...
some nonsense imaginative ppl like me might expect the Gal can swing around the above big ship & slash the enemies.. Rather than Holding the supporter, which can indicate limited fatal action. ANother add-on, try to make her leg step on the supporter. Which can picture the gal goin to swing elsewhere for her next killing action.. It can be something will bring out *Dynamic impression* to this picture..
(If u wan to use Right-picture + my suggestion)
Dun forget to let her hair flow in the air lightly + slightly backward due to her body is falling a little back from normal balance position.
To the monkey,
U can try amend the monkey wif open mouth wif short vampire teeth & poping out its eyes to show its furious while "Pulling up" the skull eye socket.. A little notty element which show the monkey try to Act like the skull.
excuse for myself for talkin quite alot.. I just think this piece got lotsa space to show off!!
05 May 2005, 09:28 PM
Wow nice and promising picture
About the two poses : the right one seems much more dynamic but the left one is more correct, regarding the perspective). Her right boob should be set higher in both cases.
About your SLOW computer : Some years ago, i was working with a software called XRES which allowed to work at low resolution, and then re-calculate all your modifications at a higher res. Maybe you can find this in abandonware ? On the other way, you can try splitting your picture in various layers and work on them separataly ?
Anyhow, keep going on :thumbsup::thumbsup:
Vahn: I agree that the rope seems abit to far away. There is something odd about that pose, doesn't fit the perspective. Anyway, I also like the right one the best.
Arc80: Thanks for stopping by again! I will make sure to draw some new monkeys in there as planned this weekend. :) Oh, and a smirk on her expression.. yep, I had one in the initial sketch so I should work that out.
dinodog_Jr: I love getting alot of feedback and thoughts from other viewers, it just helps me evolve and improve the picture, so no worries! :). I will try to redraw the pose of the woman as suggested, and to make it seem more dynamic.
spacesnail: Oh, I also see that issue with her right boob! Haven't spotted that before, thanks mate! :wise: (I guess you stared a long time at the boobs since you discovered this? haha :D just kiddin) XRES sounds promising, I wonder how good the result would be. I will look it up, anyway my computer is good enough to work at higher res. It just takes longer somethimes when I'm blocking out the color roughs.. so I draw it at a smaller scale, since I want my strokes to be as loose and fast as possible in the early stages.
05 May 2005, 01:29 AM
Well, geez, it's hard not to notice the breasts when you post an update saying, "Look, I made the breasts bigger so she'll look more female!" But I noticed that right breast too.
anyhow, really nice and funny work so far, am7! I'm going to go against the flow and say that I like the right one better. For me it's all in her right (non-sword-bearing) arm. The more tension in it, the more tension in the piece. So in the right one it's strestched out behind her (which also works well with the strong perspective you're using too.) In the left shot it's bent a bit, not as much tension in it. The left would work better for my if she were leaning back more so that that are were tenser, holding more of her weight.
But I do like her legs in the left one better. I like the back leg behind the mast. Seems more stable, and makes the skull easier to read.
Anyhow, good luck with the rest of it! :-)
05 May 2005, 01:35 AM
hey...u changed ur concept, haha, nice monkeys attacking the skeletons...cool... ...yeah!...keep it up dude
Just wanted to say that I'm back an kicking! Just finished my exam, so I'll try finish this piece this weekend!
Walrus: Hehe! I think also the right one has more dynamic feel to it. But I'm want to hide one of her foot behind the pole. But I'll try to do something between them now. Lets see what happens.
Eclipson: Thanks! not sure if I should detail the monkeys with hair yet, or just have them blocked in like this.. We'll see what I'll have time for :)
05 May 2005, 01:48 PM
Haha, god idé :)
Liker best den til høyre. Armen hennes er liksom litt feil på den til venstre.
Sorry for the norwegian
I like the pose on the right the best. Like the idea. Pippi Longstockings?
So I've done some changes! I've added more blue behind her head (helps read the red scarf on her head better). And I've tried a new pose of her right hand, I think this works pretty nicely now, and it gave me some more ideas on how to develop it. The new idea I'm thinking about is to bring in the right skeleton more, and have her sword go right through his skull - towards the screen on the back. Also I've given her a more female look, with some nice shade on her new blue eyes ;)
I'm not sure about the mouth though, what do you people think? I imagine she's more screaming her war-roar now, as she's pierced the skull!
Been working for a couple hours on this now, so I'm taking a small break to get some feedback. Do you like the changes? Or what about the new idea I'm working towards - having her pierce the skeleton's skull with her sword? And please do post you'r suggestions to improve any aspect of the image. Thanks!
OMartin: Hola! kult med enda en nordmann her! jeg er enig i det du sier, som du kan se på min nye oppdatering! Legg merke til den skinnende gulltanna ;)
05 May 2005, 02:42 PM
Oi, it's not easy to choose between the poses. But I think I like the one to the right best. Maybe it could do with some more exaggeration of the weapon to add that extra oomph?
Edit: oops, looks like you made your post while I was typing. ^^' I'm not sure about her piercing the skeleton, because then it would most likely obscure some of her arm. Right now the movement is very nice there. But perhaps a red stain on her sword? :D
The mouth looks very nice to me, so does the rest of the face. ^^
Edit nr.2: upon closer look, the bridge of her nose looks realllly wide. Is that stylised on purpose? If not, might want to put construction lines over her face on a separate layer (or mirror her) and see what happens.
liiiga: Hehe, thanks! I agree that I have to watch it so that the skull doesn't overlap her arm, but I think I can manage it.. I'll give it a shot later and see how it looks. It may bring some more action into the image, but however.. it may also reduce the feeling of that she is the monkey's master. Since she's now only pointing her sword towards the skull, ordering the monkeys to attack! I better just try to draw a cool pose on the closest monkey jumping towards the skeleton to attack it. Oh, great that you like her face.. did you spot the gold tooth btw. ? :)
*edit* oh, thanks again! I also noticed that her nose is kinda linear.
05 May 2005, 02:54 PM
Ah yes jumping monkeys would definitely be cool. ^^ And a whole SWARM of them in the background perhaps? :D
Didn't spot the golden tooth, but then again I blame the sun shining in my monitor which messes a little with the colors. Probably also the compression is having its share of fun... It's a pity we are only given a 150 kb limit for the WIPs.
05 May 2005, 12:01 PM
Maybe her breasts are too big (if there's such a thing), or not placed correctly? Maybe it's the vest that should be placed differently? Anyway, the painting is progressing nicely! :)
Omartin: I agree, I've already fixed the boobs. Tilted them abit more towards the viewer, so we look down on them. Working on the main monkeys now.
05 May 2005, 05:13 PM
haha just love the little monkey with the knife in his mouth :D
im looking forward to see how u manage to put the blade trough the skeleton....altough i liked your early composition sketch , where the skeleton showed even less on the right side..
as for critique mhhhm ... her nose looks a bit strange ... theres no curve in it, just a straight line and there is still something wrong with her breasts :) i think they are placed a bit too low on her upper body ...
i like hip & pants ....and the change of the hand on the rope is working better now :D
will there be more monkeys ? maybe one in the foreground jumping at the skeleton ?
i think it would be cool if she would be shouting some kind of attack command .... this would connect her more to her little servants :D
im looking forward to your next update & thx again for the great help with my pic :D :D :D
So I've fixed the boobs (I think?), angeled them accordingly to her body. I've done some minor changes in her face (mouth, nose). Aswell as brought even more blue in behind her. I've also blocked out the shape of one of the monkeys in the top.. what do you think of it's pose?
Oh, next step will be to add the main monkey in mid-air, attacking the skeleton. I will not go with the idea of the pirate piercing through the skulls head.. seems to read better as it is.
So lots of work to be done tomorrow, I will try to finish the whole piece. Atleast get the final composition down, and start doing some details. I've also made the skeletons in the foreground alot more colder by adding a blue reflection instead of a warm reflection (from flames) as originally planned.
Okay, so I'm done working in low res now. I will now scale the picture to the correct size according to the guidelines, and start reworking it all with details.
Will have to see how much details I'll have time to do, but I think I can make it. Oh, and I'm planning to paint some stuff hanging up in the top corner yes.. I felt that I kinda overdid it with another monkey there, as I'm gonna add lots of monkeys crawling and fighting down under the pirate woman (master).

:) That's a nice concept! Very funny!! Your monkey are so simply but so expressiv!!:scream: that's great! You should perhaps add a flag on background..a flag with a skullhead..:) AAhh a Pirates..I've never tell you that I was a pirate in a past life?..lol ^^..Good luck ..I'll look forward to see your picture's evolution.
05 May 2005, 03:26 PM
More monkeys please :buttrock:
Keep going on
05 May 2005, 11:17 PM
Looking niiice dude. Just exaggurate her expression a bit more especially the eyebrow part and maybe put something on the background, because it feels a bit empty... i don't know, maybe some cannons firing or hints of other ships firing at each others. Definately more monkey with bombs, hehehe. i will wait for the final image. Another one of my favorite piece here
05 May 2005, 06:28 AM
Cute concept:) Good luck.
Been busy with work lately! but I'm working on finishing the picture now, think I'll just make it in time. I'm currently planning to do the following this weekend:
- Adding horizon in the far back.
- Adding more monkeys to the front and the back (about 20 infact chasing a skeleton up the other pole)
- Adding a gold handle on the pirate womans sword
- Making her hair flow stronger in the wind
- Changing her facial expression (to something more cooler, like she screams her attack orders)
So I hope I will make it in time! thanks for your support and feedback, I will post some final colorings WIPs for more critics this weekend. Good luck!
Yep, the weekend is finally here! So I'll be working nonstop trying to finish this by sunday (have alot of other stuff I need to finish aswell). I've worked an hour today on her face, as you can see I've changed the expression on her face alot. Which also will help with the general mood of the image I think.
I'm adding/modifying her hair next.. I'll need to make it blowing more in the wind.

nice update with on the face. i like her mouth, chin thingie..
good luck this weekend.. im stressing, fordi jeg er russ i år :)

Yikes! there is still ALOT yet to paint! and time is running up! Oh well.. I'm a pretty fast painter, so I think I'll make it just in time - just need to hook up the turbo! :)
Just posting to keep you updated, I will continue to paint more details another two hours I think. Then take a break until tomorrow and get cracking at it again!
eparts: thanks! fortsett med russefeiringen, men ikke glem å gjøre ferdig bildet ditt og da!
arc80: Here's you'r monkey you little monkey lovah :) More to come..
xric7: thanks man! your painting was really awesome!
calisto: I know! deadline approaching very fast indeed. Good luck to you aswell!
So I've rough blocked in the idea I mentioned about the skeleton crawling up one of the poles, and lots of monkeys hanging around him. Not sure if I'm keeping this though, do you think I might be overdoing it?
I've also added another monkey in the top. My original idea was to include the horizon there, but it didn't quite give off the correct mood and feeling I'm going for here. I've tried to make a pose and expression of the monkey like he's mocking the skeletons. Not sure if I successed in doing so though.. what do you think?
Oh, and I'll be back again tomorrow.. trying to finish this!

hurry up, man! looks great so far..
but time..:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
So.. I'm working like crazy here.. really tired aswell now. But I need some feedback!!
1. Do you think I should bring back the pupils in the skeleton-eyes again? (check my former WIPs)
2. Is the skeleton climbing with monkeys hanging on it, in the background just confusing (its almost placed in one of the golden mean points).. or should I keep it?
I'm going to paint some more details on the upper monkey now.. and then fix some ropes hanging around from the top to the bottom.. and perhaps indicate some kind of action going on far down in the flames..
Help me out here, c&c are most appreciated!
05 May 2005, 10:13 PM
id maybe set some slight specular highlights to not let look the eyes and swords highlights that lonely(colordodge on a decent amount, like 10 or so helps that a lot). maybe work on her backlight (since it is an ambient reflection of the sky, global illumination) slightly with your skyblue. Most lovely characterdesign! keep on rocking!
Tired now!... zzz.. but I'll work another 30min. and then post the final. Thanks everyone for your feedback!
The1st_angel: Thanks man! that really helped as you can see I took your advice. Luckily my friend teemur was online on msn (working on finishing his piece aswell) so he helped me get started on the colordodge mode layer technique. I must admit that I've never used that mode before, and it works great to quickly add more saturation to one's highlights!
05 May 2005, 11:31 PM
A lot better! Warming up your light side really did the work :)
Puh, so I made it.. Added some very quick strokes to indicate some ropes.. aswell as vagely add some action going on down on the ship. Could probally done more details and stuff etc. but not enough time! So this is the final version I'm submitting now! :)
Good luck to everyone!
05 May 2005, 01:29 AM
