Latest Update: Final Image: final
03 March 2005, 04:09 AM
hello. glad to be on the challenge. i hope i'll find the time to participate.
but here it is, my little sketch thingy. this is pretty much how far i usually go with my lineart. I rather play with light and shadow than line.. and i can already imagine how my final picture will differ from original first sketch. i usually tend to "search" for better shapes and designs while i paint.. unfortunately i have a habbit not to think things through too much. i usually have some sort of picture in my mind and i try to follow it.
03 March 2005, 04:17 AM
oh. i forgot to add. the idea is simple. old guy with a dog.
03 March 2005, 08:31 AM
this is how far i usually go with "lineart".. after that i start coloring.. so yeah.. just letting you guys know:) now the real work begins...
03 March 2005, 08:43 AM
Hi Anton. Well, you know that sometimes simple ideas can come out the best. As most of the judging will be on the emtion of the piece I am sure you can work up something great. Good luck! Claireabella
03 March 2005, 04:01 PM
Good day, Master
In all my humbleness I urge you, oh master, to check your composition, In my most humble opinion there's a bit too much space to the right and too little to the left, cutting the dog off a bit.
g'luck with bringing the prize home. I know you don't need it, but still : )
03 March 2005, 04:25 PM
very good draw, i like your style, i wait the suite:thumbsup:
03 March 2005, 05:19 PM
and look whos here :wise:
03 March 2005, 05:34 PM
It's very glad to see you, Grand Master, here showing us some good stuff. I suggest you, guys, who's hunting some prizes here, to keep your eyes on that thread ;)
Anyway, I'm seeing something good coming out of here, just keep it going.
03 March 2005, 07:42 PM
just looking your "lineart", i cant see how great its going to be, wonderful technique.
03 March 2005, 11:48 PM
thanks guys:) good to see some estonian meat here:)
kinnas, don't worry.. it will all make sence in the end.. it will work (Y) but i appreciate your comment.(i had to make some space at the bottom tho..) . i hope i have something to show some day soon.
03 March 2005, 12:49 AM
your drawing make me curious... it seems deep and mysterious....
03 March 2005, 07:19 PM

03 March 2005, 06:07 PM
I really like the pose on this character. Very moody as well. Nice.
04 April 2005, 09:57 AM
Hi guys. I'm bit further than this right now, but i thought i'd upload a bit more rough color wip block-in that i saved yesterday.i thought i need some more dogs as well.now the composition is pretty much set(except i'm thinking of giving a littlebittle room on the left side) i'm counting on decent rendering now. otherwise this picture is not much worth:) i'm going to aim for nice overall light and "emotion" on his face. Thanks for all the responces. They are very encouraging.
04 April 2005, 10:01 AM
very baroque style squire, excellent lighting and colour:D
04 April 2005, 10:06 AM
I really like the way your piece is shaping up, it has a nice mood to it. I like your use of light and shadow...have one comment in that area, it might be cool to have a splash of light across the dogs (not bathing them completely in light, but just a touch). At this point the "master" stands out nicely (with the light playing across him), but not so much with the dogs.
Very nice work though!
04 April 2005, 10:20 AM
very beautiful pic, she's like an "renaissance composition", you used a oil paint technic? Good work, really:thumbsup:
04 April 2005, 10:26 AM
absolutely no words. u may win this game, pedekas :)
04 April 2005, 06:13 PM
Very nice. Could maybe use a couple more dogs. Maybe a single one that's a bit pudgy.
04 April 2005, 07:51 PM
You probably have one of the best hand at digital painting here : makes me think of some Rembrandt scene.
Keep it up.
04 April 2005, 08:02 PM
this is a great image. you have my vote. thumbs up.
04 April 2005, 08:10 PM
Love the simplicity of the concept! The colours are coming together nicely as well! I shall be watching...!!
04 April 2005, 08:15 PM

jowens. thanks for the suggestion. i will consider it. i'm aiming so that old guys head would be focusing point. but i'll see how it comes out. thanks mate.
04 April 2005, 06:17 AM
LOOKING GOOD! that left hand is deffinetly too green though. :)
04 April 2005, 07:06 AM
I love the fact that this is starting to remind me of a Rembrandt style with the contrasts building from the metal and fabrics. Very jealousy-inducing :D
04 April 2005, 10:36 AM
absolutely no words. u may win this game, pedekas :)
same reaction here...i'm wordless...pedekas jah:)
04 April 2005, 10:52 AM

i hope that can motivate a little: :bounce:
04 April 2005, 03:05 PM
wow im amazed by this piece! the concept is so simple but the way have executed it it seems so deep... great thing! (this is proper CG art) the choice of colour is also a great thing... im subscribing to this thread... the best of luck and post asap with what ever u got.

04 April 2005, 06:46 AM
Little color update. have to hurry up with coloring.Had some guests for few weeks, lots of work and stuff.. really hard to find time for it. I'm really stuck with left hand. can't get it right. i have painted it over and over dosens of times. but i'm sure i'll get it right in the end.had the same thing with the face as well. i'm perfectionist, so i paint over and over from start as long as i get it right. We'll see how it goes. At least i'm happy with the face i think. wonder how it fits with the rest of the pic .. anyways.. i'll try to update more often now.
Thanks for all the comments.

Your detailing skill is outstanding!
04 April 2005, 11:32 AM
This is looking AMAZING! Wonderful painting... again, I love the glorious rendering of light and shadow you're using. Really feels like a piece by one of the great masters! Genious! Love the face, too... and I'm sure you'll get that hand completed to your satisfaction :D
Can't wait to see this one finished!
04 April 2005, 11:58 AM
Great work, man! You really nailed his expression. But I think his face seems a bit skewed.Try unskewing it in Photoshop perhaps...(easier said than done). Keep up the good work!
04 April 2005, 05:11 PM
looks great dude... kinda like my idol rembrandt... one thing i could say is HURRY UP!!:scream:
04 April 2005, 05:25 PM
i dont know how to put this in words but i'm impressed~the mood and the color used in this are spot on,the cloth on the right..gosh,how did u do that?~~please finish this as i'm obsessed to it nowhttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif
04 April 2005, 05:28 PM
very nice painting of the characters it's like the style of renaissance's painters, very good pic and very nice work
04 April 2005, 12:18 AM
thanks guys. I appreciate your comments. i'm quite sure i'll be able to finish it. i have a few free weekends to work on it. thanks again.
04 April 2005, 12:24 AM
Really beautiful work, like an old master (no pun intended) painting! Good luck with the hands, I'm sure you'll get them in the end...! :-)
04 April 2005, 09:35 AM
This piece has a very nice mood. Looking great! I don't know if you're planning on it, but I think it would make it just that much better if you rendered a few objects subtly into the shadow areas in the background. Maybe a tapestry on a wall... and/or a candel holder on a small table or something. ...Good work! Keep it up! :wip:
04 April 2005, 06:37 PM
This piece is looking good. I dig the concept and the mood is very classical. Very nice texturing too. The left hand and fore arm seems a bit small compare to the right one. Will be checking back later.
04 April 2005, 11:08 AM
A very autonomous work with fine color composition and lively brushwork. The dogs' facial expressions are outstandingly life-like, and so are the fabrics' details.
Nice to see that you got around now, timewise, to add a lot of details to the composition. Only the dogs still have some catching up to do in that regard---will you get around to that, too? Would be a pity, if not ...
:) <- Lutz
04 April 2005, 12:25 PM
If you come in france a day, go visited "le louvre" You will see magnificent paintings , I think that it you will interest because your style is really close to painters of the revival. Well, France it is far from Australia, and in more, he has to have museums there so big has sidney or Melbourne, i like your work
05 May 2005, 11:59 PM
Found some time on a weekend and got little bit further with colors. I got the hand right. somehow it was hard to get it right. sometimes some parts come really quickly, easy and naturally.for example with the right hand i was happy right away. but with some objects i have to mess forever to get them into harmony with the rest of the pic. anyways. your crits are more than welcome. i'll try to get the pic nailed this week. i need to work on dogs bit more. and also don't like how the sword looks etc.
thanks for your support guys.
05 May 2005, 02:36 AM
Anton, did you take a picture in a Art Museum
This is amazing work , really nice lighting reminds me of old oil paintings, it's just stunning can't wait to see you final.
05 May 2005, 04:08 PM
türa ma ütlen. türa.
05 May 2005, 04:20 PM
05 May 2005, 05:24 PM
I was almost desperate that i'll never see any progress here, but now....you are sick....haige mees oled kyll, väga kõva, müts maha 10 korda (sota tegelt)
By the way i really like the emotion and the emotional connection between master and servant (s), really bro.
05 May 2005, 10:16 PM
heheh.. thanks guys.
i'm happy you like it. i'm almost out of juice and starting not liking it at all. i hope to update it today later.
05 May 2005, 11:13 PM
 looking good... the right hand seems ok to me, i guess it looks big coz the other one can be seen sideways... i thnk your sword is ok, maybe some highlights but not too much... maybe a few refinement w/ the dog, and again:) not too much... overall, it looks finish to me or jst some few tweakings, coz you dnt want to lose that classic mood of the painting...
05 May 2005, 11:22 PM
I agree, this looks almost done. And done very nicely I might add. =)
05 May 2005, 03:00 AM
Very nice work!
05 May 2005, 12:42 PM
i'm getting in the stage where i don't like the picture. uhmm.. i think the dogs need just a little little tweaks still.. and still wasting my time getting the hand where i want it.. well anyways. my head is a mess
05 May 2005, 01:40 PM
Very, very nice work. Those little food seeking missiles at his feet are just a riot. You had mentioned the face being "a mess", which I would not at all agree with, though it does look like his left eye is just a smidge low to me. Beautiful stuff!
05 May 2005, 01:46 PM
thanks for the tip. now i see what you mean. i myself saw it as a lowered brow. but now i see it really does look like a weird low eye.. anyways. i'll try to move it up just a bit and see how it looks. thanks.
05 May 2005, 01:58 PM
Beeeeautiful! His right hand is kinda bigger than his left one, but as he´s got to hold that sword all day, I don´t really wonder ;) . Keep it up, dude!
05 May 2005, 02:01 PM
This is looking very professional! I really like the "warm" feel of it. Maybe bring out the dogs a bit more but other than that, excellent work!
05 May 2005, 02:07 PM
Gosh! Amazing! Classical feel to it, and wonderful lighting! Lovely work... oops, running out of compliments... :D
05 May 2005, 11:16 AM
Ahh... Very skilled you are. The force is strong within you. Masterful painting. Very Rembrantish...
thats really amazing, almost looking like a painting. This is terrific! Keep up the great work and Ill look forwward to more of your updates! Great job!
P>S> I love the feeling I get from the guy! Great!
05 May 2005, 12:35 PM
Very pretty, I like his helmet :D and the warm colours are really nice. Don't worry about the 'hating the picture' stage, we all get that... i know I certainly do.
05 May 2005, 07:12 AM
Just work through your dislike; we all get to that stage. This is just wonderful work. I love the atmospheric feel to it; and it makes me smile. Highly imaginative!
05 May 2005, 07:17 AM
very rembrandt like. nice mood. serene and gentle. personally, i wish you had chosen a different method of laying the color down... maybe not so smooth on everything, but its doing its job. i am led to believe an area with sharper lines and higher contrast (the focal point) would really make this peice stand out. look forward to it completed.
05 May 2005, 07:34 AM
Beautiful! Not to modern, but really great! You a Rembrandt fan? (me too)
best regards: Kornél
05 May 2005, 07:47 AM
it's always an impressive pic, the renaissance's anbiance is here, the reflect light on the dog (teckel) is very realistic, it's a great pic of art, before make numeric paint you must be make traditional paint oil no?
05 May 2005, 04:27 PM
This is just gorgeous work, Ant4d! The lighting, the pose, the texturing and subtle rendering... All really top-notch. I agree with SavageCreature about the man's left eye seeming a little low, but aside from that, the face looks perfect.
As for the issue you're having with the hands, just a few subjective observations: It almost feels to me like the front hand is smaller than the hand behind it. So you could consider blowing the front one (his left) up a little bit. Proportinately, the main part of the hand feels a bit long compared to the finger length and the forearm. Maybe just making it a bit smaller by adding a tad to the forearm could help... But hey, what do I know? Just suggestions, anyhow.
good luck with the last little bits!
05 May 2005, 04:42 PM
i think i said i was 'intrigued' on your first page... and then i've not had chance to browse for a while... and... and...
THiS iS JuST WoNDERFuL!!
There's a lot of images with swords and armour... and even dogs... But this just stands out as being so very very different. I love the mood of the piece.
So who's is he the 'master'..? or the 'servant'...?
05 May 2005, 11:55 AM
Final. Thanks for all the help. Lots of encouraging and constructively useful comments which helped this picture a lot. it was fun to paint. thanks
05 May 2005, 12:18 PM
05 May 2005, 12:32 PM
hehe.. duddlebug. thanks. it's very great compliment. i admire your work and it's nice to hear such words from you:)
Belhaven - what do you mean by not so smooth? do you mean the brushes are too soft? I'm actually not sure why i did it that way. I'm still experimeting and not really using always the same technique.
Walrus - thanks for such nice long comment. it helped a lot. cheers my friend.
Mdn67 - :P cheers. I have no oil painting backround. littlebit of pastel:)
Kornel - Rembrandt:) ofcourse!.. thanks mate.
all the rest -
thanks again for the comments. i changed the eye. little bit of that cape. i kind of tried to change the hands as you guys suggested.
05 May 2005, 12:49 PM
I love the lighting on his face... just like an old masters work. Congrats on finishing, you've done a fantastic job. :applause:
05 May 2005, 12:50 PM

05 May 2005, 01:51 PM
A really piece of classic artwork! Congratulations and good luck in the challenge!
05 May 2005, 03:39 PM
Hi Ant4d, Félicitations for this image, if significant and plain of
subtlety, all best for the prize list.
05 May 2005, 04:01 PM
Yay! You finished! And happy to be any sort of help.
It's just a really nice, somber, subtle piece... really masterful work.
05 May 2005, 04:15 PM

05 May 2005, 04:36 PM
Wow, this has such a classic feel to it, FABULOUS!
05 May 2005, 04:41 PM
i agree with them, really classic. Good luck dude, its an honor to be in the competition with you:thumbsup:
05 May 2005, 04:58 PM
hey really like this, love the mood, and the classical quality, great stuff :bounce:
05 May 2005, 05:32 PM
How did I not see this one before?
Lovely, subtle, sort of more like Caravaggio than Rembrandt though. Or maybe Van Dyck, with a bit of Holbein thrown in...either way, it turned out really well, not overly dramatic, just quiet and calm. A nice change from some of the other entries here (like my own, I must confess)
I don't want to be a fangirl and leave without anything constructive, so I will comment on the beauty of the rendering of the fur...that is my favorite part. Either that or the edge of the fabric upon which his arm is leaning.
Good luck in the judging!
05 May 2005, 08:35 PM
congrats on finishing this beautiful picture, anton!
05 May 2005, 02:23 AM

05 May 2005, 09:42 PM
The Best !!!
05 May 2005, 05:35 AM
Your painting is breath taking... what can I say. The story you're telling and the mood you've evoked in your beautiful traditional style is enough to make Rembrandt weep :)
05 May 2005, 05:14 AM
Anton, good luck in the final judging. I'm sorry I haven't commented in your thread prior to now, but this has been my favorite entry for quite some time. I have your image currently displayed on my desktop at work and at home (which is a first for me - I usually have different images).
This image has such a romantic and classic feel to it. It's just wonderful on all levels of composition, lighting, mood and character. I applaud your talents. Great work!
Submit it to the finished works gallery ... so I can front page it. :D
05 May 2005, 07:50 PM
This is an amazing image,  . Cant say enough about this image, it is just a wonderful image.
05 May 2005, 01:33 AM

Pixelpuppet - heheh.. looks like me:) well i heard somewhere that artists tend to draw faces similar to themselves.
Kirt - :) thanks mate.it's a big compliment. i'll try to post it today:)
05 May 2005, 01:37 PM
After viewing every entry I would pick yours as the overall winner. It is absolutely my favorite submission. It is beautiful, emotional, captivating, charming...not enough words to describe it.
There was a lot of great quality in this contest but I feel you have surpassed your competition by capturing a very subtle moment between Master and Servant which greatly appeals to me. For what it's worth, I pick yours as the grand prize winner. Thank you for your imagination and inspiration. I hope when all is said and done that you are indeed the overall winner. Good luck.
05 May 2005, 02:50 PM
really lovely stuff, very understated feel and i love treatment of the hair on the wee dugs. very strong
05 May 2005, 01:26 AM
This is worthy of hanging on the wall at a hunter's lodge or a museum! good job
06 June 2005, 11:28 PM
That's like....wow...oh yeah, that's like 5,6,7 10 stars....:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:
06 June 2005, 11:03 AM
i just thought that his right hand (viewer's left) the finger length is not correct. From the middle finger to pinky its supposed to get shorter not longer.
the skin tones are great - very soft and delicate. It has a certain glow to it that makes it very beautful to look at.
06 June 2005, 01:45 AM
Nice classical piece...
06 June 2005, 05:25 PM
Congratulations Anton. I loved your piece overall but at least the judges didn't overlook your submission. You're a winner to me.
