Latest Update: Final Image: Damned Souls (

...And the final image!!

Damn, it was really a rush to finish it in time. I hoped I could uload it yesterday, but I didn't have time...

There where so many things to do that I needed to put an end to it, still I could have been working on it for days.
Probably, it came out a little much full and chaotic, but I still like the overall mood.
I'm sorry I was unable to add those details someone suggested, but time inesorably runned out and I had to submit it. I probably even forgot to work on some parts of it for the hurry!

Really thanks to everyone who stopped by, it was a very enjoyable experience.

Good luck to everyone! ^_^

And now I can rest my hand. The last two days it hurted for how much I drew!
Next time I take part to a challenge I don't want to see a human figure in no ways, aaaargh!!

03 March 2005, 04:33 PM
enjoy ureself and gud luck

03 March 2005, 02:23 PM
Thanks Noob! ;)

Now let me introduce myself::)
Ok, this is my very first time on a cgtalk challenge. I missed the space opera challenge, but I cannot allow myself to miss this one: the subject it’s too interesting!

The idea about the image I’m working on, came to me just after reading description of this contest: what’s better to portray the relationship between master and servants than a demon ruling over the souls of the damned in hell?

I imagine it as a place full of human figures, naked and contorting for the pain and the urge to serve their new owner, damned for the eternity.

I recently saw a documentary about Michelangelo and I was greatly inspired by his "Last judgement" (I hope it is called so in English): all those bodies painted by the master have an incredible sense of movement and strength.

Obviously, I don’t want to compare myself with him, but I’ll do my best to put strength and action in this image.

Thanks in advance to everyone who will help me with comments and critiques, and good luck to everyone, it’ going to be fun!

I’m usually not a big fun of the dark and gloomy at all costs, this time as gone that way…

03 March 2005, 02:25 PM (

This is the concept sketch I’ve done for this image. I tried three other points of view, two with the horizon on a different height and one at ¾ back of the throne, but this was the one that satisfied me more and gave me a good plane to fill with figures 
The scene takes place, quite obviously, in an environment full magma, flames and smoke. These should give me a good lighting from the bottom to generate a dark and contrasted scene.
It’s not so visible in this sketch, but the throne where the demon sit is made of “living” bodies.

03 March 2005, 03:23 PM (

before starting to draw the final drawing I have to define some things: one those is the throne formed with human figures.
this is what I have done. I don't think I can get this definition in the final image, but it's good to have all the possible things already defined before starting colouring :)

03 March 2005, 03:29 PM
good concept, good luck.

03 March 2005, 04:07 PM
you got skill! This is going to be interesting to see it progress... great composition, great idea, although a little "evil". Ha, but il be waiting how you will draw the demon, and how the expressions will turn out on the humans. Il be watching!!!

03 March 2005, 04:07 PM

They is very cool, I waits to see the continuation.

03 March 2005, 11:42 PM
This is very interesting. Cant wait to see how it develops.

03 March 2005, 11:46 PM
i have to agree with the rest- this IS interesting. now you can't keep us waiting for too long to see it develope. good luck!!

03 March 2005, 11:55 PM
Good start dude. I like the gestures and poses of the people.
Right now, it's kind of reminding me of one of Michaelangelo's works (one of the pieces in sispine chapel) and how he sculpt's and draws his figures.

03 March 2005, 01:22 PM
thanks to everyone:)
I cannot check the forum too often, because I'm actually without an internet connection at home:sad:, so I can get to cgtalk only once a day...

I hope I can do a good job on the expressions. it' the most difficult thing to achieve on a human figure for me:rolleyes:

03 March 2005, 01:30 PM (

one possible aspect of the demon.
I'm not very satisfied with the result, but I have to choose between a simple and very human aspect like this or something more complex; but I have to consider that he won't be too big in the final image, so something too much elaborated could be not very "readable"...

03 March 2005, 01:33 PM
mmmmh, I have to remember that cgtalk adds a level of sharpening next time I post something...

03 March 2005, 01:56 PM
yeah they shrink your image if its too big :) just click on it for full size.

i love the idea great life drawing project :) i couldn't take on such a task but it looks like you have the skill to do it. i think you need to work on the devil a bit hes not evil enough yet for me :(

i seen the mummy returns the other day there is a scene of hell with 1000's of souls climbing over each other near magma maybe you should rent it out might help for reference :P

03 March 2005, 02:22 PM (

as suggested, I worked more on the demonic figure: the previous version wasn't very devilish...
I further developed the original head and this is what came out. He's definitely more interesting now.

03 March 2005, 02:27 PM
thats a great design,but i think the evilness still isn't quite there,remember design isn't everything,its mostly about expression,crease up his face a little,make him angry FRUSTRATED,use a mirror to help u.
bring a mirror into the toliet with u when ur taking a s**t,thats the expression u want.

 keep it up!

03 March 2005, 03:31 PM
thanks Noob! for the advice;)
I will study more the expression when it comes to work on the coloured version: i nedd to see how big it will be and how much details I can afford:)
this sketch was done on a coarse paper, A4 size, and it doesn't allow me a lot of space to work on. I will work now on the outline drawing in an A3 sheet and then i think i'll have to work on details directly in painter:shrug:

04 April 2005, 06:54 PM
Doing great so far, Aradiael! I think the basic design for the demon seems demonic enough. I wonder how you'll compose and light him in such a way to reveal his character and expression (sinister demon?)

I'll be in touch with your progress.

04 April 2005, 07:44 PM
That human figure sketch is amazing, very impressive. Your demon's head looks good also, especially the horns, but the body sketch is a bit dull. Try for something more outrageous! :)

THE Wizard
04 April 2005, 12:48 AM
I totaly agree with previous posts. The demon need to be MORE EVIL! Add a little less human eyes, and extend his jaw, and try to add some sharp pointy teeth, and a big, no, no huge tail! yes, that'll do. By the way, I WOULD NEVER-EVER WANNA BE IN YOUR KIND OF HELL - it's sick. But it ROCKS! Great hell!

My master And Servant 2D (

04 April 2005, 03:44 PM
thanks to all!

it seems that i have to further develope that demon... but at this stage i think i need to work on him directly on the final image, because i worked hard this week-end and i have two new update.

(damn, this 150k limits is a little.... limitant:banghead: )

04 April 2005, 03:51 PM
ok now my work will contain quite a few human characters, but this is just sick:thumbsup: give that demon more elegance in the curvature of the horns, brave work!

04 April 2005, 03:57 PM (

this should be the final aspect of my artwork.
It looks quite different from the initial sketch, basically because in the sketch the proportions were perspectically wrong. Now all the figures are better related in size one to another, even if i faked a little the proportion to avoid too big figures in foreground...

04 April 2005, 04:06 PM (

As I said, I worked a little this week-end, so I have to updates to post.
This one is a rough tonal study, done over the line art. It was years I didn't use seriously a pencil for a complete work!
The image looks a bit confused, but it made me understand were I need to work more on the colouring stage and what to avoid.

If I had done it directly on the pc, it wold have been a lot easier and fast, but it was fun with pencils!

04 April 2005, 04:08 PM
very nice vision of the hells, i wait the color, good work:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 04:12 PM
This is going to look great with color. Can't wait to see it. I hope you keep the entire illustration and not crop it to the devil in the center. This is going to look really good when painted. Cool, or should I say Hot work, man.

04 April 2005, 04:30 PM
Very nice! I like how you went the hell way ^^

The composition is very nice as well. It would be great to see a whole sea of people crowding around the master :) That would be nice, however I like how it looks right now so adding more people is not that important. Keep up the great work!

04 April 2005, 04:30 PM
As for me the picture seems too flat, and there is no feeling of depth.

Any way Good luck!)

04 April 2005, 05:10 PM
Nice work with the pencils and composition. You've done the bodies quite well.
You might want to add some details to the demon's body, his head looks very out of place on it. Also, I imagine you already have something in mind for the final, but the sky looks kind of monotonous, you need some variation in the clouds.

04 April 2005, 05:16 PM
This looks really promising and ambitious! I feel that the area behind the demon is a bit empty. Where does the stair lead to behind the throne? You could put som kind of monument to add more scale to the image.

keep it up!

04 April 2005, 02:59 PM
again thanks to all for the suggestion :)

possibly, a larger amount of figures could be better, be I must admit that I'm not that good at drawing human figures, so there's the serious risk to ruin everything if I exagerate... it's still a big challenge for me as it is actually:D

do you mean the greyscale one, or the entire composition? as for the greyscale, it could have been worked better, far better, at the cost of many more hours of work obviously. :)
but i think it still has it's limits: for example you cannot "cut" the colors to simulate aerial perspective...

I'll surely add more details to the demon, i just need to find what...:banghead:
I also planned to change the orientation of his head: that one i chose, was the only one i found that gave me the chance to make him look straight to the people down there, but doesn't satisfy me, so it will change. :)
for the sky you're right, actually it's kind of monotonous. I already have in mind something more detailed and dramatic, but I'll work on it in painter, where I can experiment more in less time.

the stairs lead directly behind the throne, on the main platform.
there is a reason i didn't put anything behind the trone: i want to do some strong and beautiful clouds behind there, and something huge raising from behind the trone could literally cut my image in two... but i'll give it a try :)

04 April 2005, 02:16 PM (

Ok, this is my first try at definining a possible colour aspect for the final image. I worked a little more on the middle group of figures, but there are still tons of things to do.
I don't really know if I like the background colors, when I have everything set down I'll be able to better understand what to keep and what to change (and what to improve of course...).
Most probably I'll need to add more light-shadow contrast and reduce the background saturation.

04 April 2005, 02:19 PM (

Just a close up of the middle group of figures.
Still have many things to define....

04 April 2005, 02:22 PM
lots a people, you'll work your butt out..but the harder the challenge, the greater we become..i think..i love your colours, they are very well balanced.:)

04 April 2005, 02:26 PM
Man, that is a really nice progress since the last time i was here. Their gestures are very readable and it works for you piece. I like the way you are painting it like gaugche.

04 April 2005, 04:46 PM
Oh man... i pitty you mate... all thoes figures.... ahh would give me a head ache.

good luck pulling it off. ... i am still in awe.

04 April 2005, 04:30 PM
It's giving me head aches!!:banghead:

all this time passed since my last update and i don't even have finished to define a primary pass of colour for all the figures...
I still have to decide between a more realistic colouring and a more "cartoony" (bad word, but it's the only one that came to my mind...) colouring with special effetcts:hmm:

probably tomorrow I'll post an update.

04 April 2005, 02:40 PM

Good sketch. good idea. you should maybe add a character on foreground... in order to show a adoration feeling on facial's easy to say:) ..
hairs of character look too "synthetik" in comparaison with bodys (look realistic)

04 April 2005, 02:52 PM
I like the concept, very nice so far... Maybe a bit extra red colour on the humans' bodies would work well, the red you have on the volcano's lava. The background saturation is IMHO fine the way it is.

04 April 2005, 02:45 PM (

Got bored of filling spaces with colours, so I started to work on some detailing.
actually I'm concentrating on those central figures around the pillar, because I consider them the main reference from which compare and relate the colours of all the others.
Added some reds here and there, more hilights and more dark and purple shadows. ah, I forgot, added some hands too... ^_^
Actually the thing I like most, is the little "pet" visible in the upper right corner... (it's just drafted actually, but i already like it)

04 April 2005, 02:55 PM
and to answer the last two posts (really thanks for the suggestions :) )

Fiolka Alexandre
I don't know if I can do that facial expression, but it's some days I'm thinking of adding two or three figures facing the camera on the same level of those near the pillar. I'm getting a little bored of painting only backs and shoulders:scream:

I'm trying to add more colour variation on the figures (I hope is at least a little visible at this stage). This image has the power of making me blind after half hour I'm working on it!

04 April 2005, 03:01 PM
When I look at this mass of "naked" people Queen's "I want to break free" starts playing in my mind. Great work Stefano, that pet reminds me of the wolve that raised Romulus and Remus :)

04 April 2005, 03:35 PM
u are a patient man. i bow!

04 April 2005, 03:45 PM
great work:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
cool composition and excellent scene

my master and servant 2d

04 April 2005, 01:44 PM (

Updating today with a couple of close ups.
This one is the main hound visible on the right part of the image. Simple, but I like how this little pet came off...

04 April 2005, 01:50 PM (

...And this is a work in progress of the demon.
I was unable to find a pose that make it possible for him to interact with the people below and still show his head, so I decided to put his attention to something he has in his right hand.
I also decided to dress him. there are many reason why I made this decision, but one in particular is the fact I wanted to paint some dress!!!

04 April 2005, 09:52 PM
Il tuo proseguimento e proprio di ottimo qualità. Questo dipinto sa di Bosch, l’artista con tanto nudità infernale e sesso a bontà dal paradiso.

Mi sento anche di doverti fare un compimento sul tuo stile.

Sorry if my Italian isn't perfect :)

04 April 2005, 04:16 PM
thanks Lystmaler and don't worry your Italian is almost perfect, surely much, much better than my English!

04 April 2005, 04:26 PM
hey man, I am keeping an eye on this one!. The composition is very interesting and you have alot of elements going on. IT's is very interesting. If i have another go at this contest I would have done something similar. A sucker for human figures. Good luck!

04 April 2005, 03:12 PM (

more things done and more to be done.
I worked out the living throne, worked on the base of the throne itself, added a stronger orange backlight on those figures so they should be more dinstinct, and worked gerally to define some tones I hadn\'t already defined...

I think finally is coming out what the final piece will look like :) (probably not what I imagined in the begining, but still satisfying)

04 April 2005, 03:19 PM
 pretty nice colours, great...wanna see the next one ur postin

05 May 2005, 01:54 PM (

time is slowly running out...
I finally worked on one of the two figures in foreground. For this figure I decided wisely to rely on a photo reference for pose and lighting: considering the lack of nude women around me I opted for myself as a model (I'm a man!!). Damn, the head in that position was terribly hard to paint, considering I couldn't rely on my face because I'm not really feminine...
I need to shorten a little her right arm, positioning her left and maybe work a little more on the legs.

I worked as well on that smoke in the background, but it need to be finished too.

Next match will be the other figure in foreground: it will be hard!

05 May 2005, 02:01 PM
Wow i absolutely love your concept, its got an epic classical feel to it. Keep it going mate, you are doing really well. One small note, its looking extremely busy, personally I think you need to emphasise your focal point a bit more, its getting a little bit busy. Make sure you get it finished. Good luck. Cant wait to see the finished piece!

05 May 2005, 02:41 PM
Just discovered your entry, really cool and biblical painting! Good luck with it. :)

05 May 2005, 02:58 PM
pretty cool.i'm liking it!!!

05 May 2005, 12:53 PM
thanks for the reply guys:)

It's a pity i cannot spend more time on the forum in these days, I've seen many entries really beautiful, but I cannot do anything more than a fast visit...
hope the next challenge I take part, I will have the homme connection again.

Anyway, Demonicoz, you got a point: actually my major fear is to overwork the image so it doesn't have any focal point. I did a try by flattening a little the background, but I'm not really satisfied. I'll see what I can do after I have the other figure in foreground done.
Still hope as well to be in time to insert those suggestion I received in this thread:)

05 May 2005, 12:55 PM
nude fest '05 YAAAAY!

05 May 2005, 01:08 PM
oy man dont u wory, it aint nothing that some soft light cant fix, u know, sfumato and soft light work wonders, keep it up

05 May 2005, 09:06 PM
Hi Aradiael,nice work.

05 May 2005, 10:40 AM
Very ambitious, but it looks like you can make it in time. Lots of nudity...

05 May 2005, 03:08 PM (

Ok, I have another week to finish it.
In this update, I've reduced the impact of the background, finished the woman and almost finished the man.

About the man: like the woman, he's based on a photo reference for the pose(me again) but I did some correction on the fly respect the reference because it didn't fit the perspective and my taste. The face is me-myself as is the hair, before the cutting (sigh) I did some days ago...
I need to modify the ground under him and most probably enlarge a little the canvas on his left, so the figure isn't exactly attached to the border.

05 May 2005, 04:16 PM
amazing details!:bounce:

05 May 2005, 02:45 PM
ehrr, I've read the Faq but I still have a question... (sorry guys, first cgchallenge for me:) )
Does anyone know if the final tiff file need to be compressed or uncompressed? I guess it should be uncompressed rgb, but it will be an upload of 50 megs!

05 May 2005, 02:21 PM
noone knows?:curious:

05 May 2005, 02:27 PM
I like your work so much :bounce: .. good luck.

05 May 2005, 03:28 PM
Very strong work! I think your drawing skills are very good. This is one of the more ambitious entries I have seen. Good luck!

05 May 2005, 09:13 AM (

Ok, the image is finished at last!
just some closer views before the upload of the final image.

This one is the demon who wield the chains that lead to the neck of the damned.

05 May 2005, 09:19 AM (

Second closer view.

I like how the cristal came out, it was probably the easiest part of the image...
Unfortunately I was unable to find a way to do her left hand: every pose I tried looked crappy, so I decided not to show it.

05 May 2005, 09:24 AM
ur detail is amazing!!
love ur lighting a lot and also the character.

05 May 2005, 09:28 AM (

Third closer view.

Not much to say, but I really like the chain ^_^

05 May 2005, 09:34 AM
like the chain..Your caracter look very great too!! amazing work..i want to see final image:scream:

Good luck !!!

05 May 2005, 01:19 PM
thanks again to everyone. I must admit I wasn't sure in the beginning to be able to do an image so complex at an aceptable level, but it's always a pleasure to take part on a challenge with so many brilliant artists: it let you pull out the best of yourself.:D

05 May 2005, 04:09 PM
