Latest Update: Final Image: This is it! (

I decided to call it done. Didn't change anything since the final coloring.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out. :)

Basic concept and use of color. Thinking about how "evil" to make the master(s) look.

Hey this is hot....You already have most of it thought out...great image and love the veiw you've given the peice.. just totally adds to the imagery..

love it, and lloking forward to seeing you in amongst the best..

A small update. Not satisfied with the head of the right slave, want to add a bit more scaredness and despair to it. The 'lords of the underground' in the back need to get more impressive outfits (helmets, armor, diabolic flames).

03 March 2005, 07:18 AM
I cant ebelive this didnt get more responces. The theme is so stronge here. I almost want to cry for the poor caveman dude, trying to get a bone to eat. Continue painting this piece, I have a good feeling about this one.

03 March 2005, 06:17 PM (

Already started "inking" the middle layer (the two side-slaves). Fore- and background might be tweaked and/or redrawn. My workflow is going to be quite non-linear. :]

03 March 2005, 03:45 PM (

I'm going to stick with this one. The idea behind it is basically a number of chained 'pet' slaves held by some demon knights in the underworld.
The front slave - who looks less desperate and mad than the two on his side - eagerly tries to grab a bone to eat.

The scene looks a bit hell-like, with fire on the background, glowing cracks and sparks on the floor.

Now, onward to the line-art process!

Thanks for the comments omengeorge and CoreyArtE, by the way.

Good luck to you too. :)

looks great!

03 March 2005, 03:56 PM
Nice action Geoffrey! Very dynamic illustration Looking good so far! Just a tought, consider openning-up the composition about a half an inch on the left and then flip it horizontal just to see what it looks like. I look forward to more. excellent start!

03 March 2005, 03:57 PM
Hiya koekebakker (lol, maffe naam), cool concept and cool sketches. The angle of the pic is great, very dramatic.

Gonna keep an eye out for this one, keep em coming:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 04:21 PM
Cool idea!
I would like to see more relation between the slaves and masters.
Now, you put so much energy into the hand and bone.
Show more relation.
Looks cool! Keep it up!

SideAche: good idea about that half inch of space. Looks better now (at least the frontman's hand fits into the canvas.) ;)

Rudeone: Thanks :]

taeyoungchoi: I understand what you mean, however, I don't know how to make the relation between master and servant more obvious without drastically changing the subject. I do want the whole "being-a-pet" theme to get across, and with the chains (which will become a bit more prominent later on) and the bone on the floor I think I get close enough to make them look like a bunch of dogs on a walk with their 'masters'. :) But thanks for the advice!

03 March 2005, 07:08 PM
nice movement you got there...... just a thought....wat if the other two slaves were also fighting for it(bone)....any ways coming out good

04 April 2005, 03:57 PM (

Almost halfway defining the lines. Quite a time-consuming process since I have to resketch/-draw a few anatomy errors. But the picture is coming along, slowly.

04 April 2005, 10:11 PM (

Continuing the line art...

04 April 2005, 08:35 PM (

Colored the bone and the face.

Finally found some time to pick up the painting. I decided to change the background masters into less armored demons - going for long dark robes now. Havent really thought it out in detail yet, so I already started coloring some foreground stuff. :)

04 April 2005, 09:17 PM
The colouring on that bone is fantastic. I really love the composition and foreshortening of the piece. Keep going!

05 May 2005, 03:10 PM (

Color update. I hope I'm getting the lighting down correctly, let me know what you think.

Groady: Thanks!

05 May 2005, 03:31 PM
ohh! I can feel the poor slave is struggling to reach the bone! How about adding bits of meat to it so that we can see that he's trying to reach and eat whatever bits of food is left. The guy to the furthest right looks and posed like Gollum :).

Waiting for you to finish this one! All the best!

05 May 2005, 05:39 PM
looks good mate~u could make the eye of the slave looks towards the bone though.right now he's like looking at the ground.ignore this if this is ur intention:)just a lil suggestion,he could look alil more messy,i mean with alil bruises and dirt on his body?i love the angle though:)

best of luck to u

05 May 2005, 06:21 PM
jeromoo: Good idea, I was already wondering if people would get the fact that is was a bone to eat. I'll add some pieces later, thanks. :)

ms@zx: You're right about the eye, heh..didn't even notice it. And I think I'll make him a bit bruised as well, thanks for the feedback.

05 May 2005, 05:44 AM
To me it looks like he's staring at the bone fine.

05 May 2005, 11:03 PM (

Tedious ground detail... :|

05 May 2005, 12:28 AM (

Getting there, step by step. :]

05 May 2005, 01:45 AM
Nice idea to work out! There is a realy movement look in it!

Great

05 May 2005, 05:03 PM (

Colored the left slave. Personally I think I did a sloppy job, especially the shading around the shoulder, but since the deadline is coming close I feel I have to hurry things up a bit.

Going to do the background masters after this, I still have to draw them from scratch, although I have an idea of what I want..finally. Hmm, it's gonna be close. :)

05 May 2005, 06:38 PM (

Added a concept sketch of the background. The masters are surrounded by an inferno of flames and smoke.

Let me know what you think so far!

Next couple of things to do:
- work out the background in detail
- add some meat to the bone
- add dust/smoke/sparks to the foreground
- add a crack to the left part of the ground
- work out details of the ground
- give the slaves some bruises

05 May 2005, 01:43 AM (

Working out the background now...

05 May 2005, 03:01 PM (

The masters on the side are done for the most part now. I'll focus on the smoke between the front and back layers next.

05 May 2005, 08:51 PM (

Well, I could think of an infinite amount details to add but I'll think I'm gonna leave it like this. I shall look at it tomorrow and make the last adjustments if necessary.

Please let me know what you think and/or what last-minuten color/lighting changes to make.

05 May 2005, 04:14 PM (

I decided to call it done. Didn't change anything since the final coloring.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out. :)

good pic with much action, i like the style of painting, good work and good luck for the end

05 May 2005, 04:18 PM
looks amazin, has come a long way since the begining!

05 May 2005, 04:33 PM

Got to think of an apropriate title for it. I think I'll stick to my initial concept sketch title.

05 May 2005, 04:36 PM
pretty weird dude, but you did a great job on this, congratulations & good luck!!

05 May 2005, 05:01 PM
great work!!
congrats on ur final
:bounce:  :applause: :buttrock:

05 May 2005, 05:24 PM
Hey there, congrats on finishing up-- I like how you used colors in this picture!

Would I be right in assuming you had a lot of Lord of the Rings inspiration? I ask because I can see Gollum, chained, along with the Ringwraiths in the background, in that swirly part where Frodo puts on the ring??

05 May 2005, 06:11 PM
Thanks all, and yeah, I did use some references of LotR. Not necessarily a fan or anything, it just came out that way. ;)
