Aww its all over... well i had a great time doing concepts and thinking up ideas for this challenge.... next time ill try to get out of the concept stage earlier though =)

Thx for supporting me dudes.. and good luck with your pieces!

here’s a larger and crisper jpeg compression btw... >><< (

short description of the piece.... i dont think it need words at all to work actually.. but here goes.

The story -im quoting a previous post of mine (..theres more info in the thread)

“The idea was to portray the employee - the corporate slave...... mastered by his heavy workload. The guy in the suit and portfolio with this roaring engine of power strapped to his back..”

Inspiration -also quote from previous post

“Something the lead-role played by Sean Penn in the movie 'The Assassination of Richard Nixon' said inspired me in doing this one.... he said something in the lines of "slavery never ended, it just changed name to employee".. pretty catchy line coming from a delusional madman.. and i guess there's some truth in it aswell.."

04 April 2005, 10:52 AM
very nice style! but i don't understand your concept..maybe it's that it's just the beginning of your picture so... i'll come back see evolution..

Good luck!

04 April 2005, 11:06 AM

Gillar det andra också, men där händer det ngt.
Ska kolla in dig.

sort of translation: good stuff

04 April 2005, 01:03 AM
Your style is so wonderfully expressive. I can't believe it was done on the computer.... whoa! Your stuff is really unique. Great work!

04 April 2005, 01:16 AM
holy crap... the thumbnail of your latest concept really grabbed the eye in amoungst all the others. And wow... my first reaction was "That CANNOT be digital". How on earth do you do that? These are without doubt the coolest style of entries I've come across yet. As for concepts... half of me really likes the dark, slightly disturbing concept of Skullmaster, but I think the latest concept is such a different take on the theme upto the fantasy style that exists a lot in this forum. I also think the one of the people climbing out of that guy's head has the potential to be a real traffic stopper, especially if you could execute it with the same vibrancy and colour that the latest concept has been done in. All of them are amazing, just as concepts. I'd love to see how a finished piece looks.

04 April 2005, 11:55 AM (

chemically mastered

04 April 2005, 12:00 PM (

Something the lead-role played by Sean Penn in the movie 'The Assassination of Richard Nixon' said inspired me in doing this one.... he said something in the lines of "slavery never ended, it just changed name to employee".. pretty catchy line coming from a delusional madman.. and i guess there's some truth in it aswell..

04 April 2005, 12:04 PM (

hey thx everyone.. you cheered me up =)

duddlebug: we never know! =)

freefall: lately i've gotten my groove on with a simple vertically flat brush custom made in photoshop.. and with the brush shape dynamics set with direction on (brushes/shape dynamics/control->direction, sizejitter 0%, if ya didnt know)

fiolka: =).. i could give u a hint... alot of my concepts is dealing with the master/servant struggle in the human mind... right/wrong good/bad etc. The green pic on page 1 is illustrating another concept where the relationship hitman(gangster)/boss will take a turn.. the question mark tells the boss in the background no longer has control of the situation.. and the hitman with the exclamation mark now is about to take the power..ggrah

zepyhri: : ) i can agree on your take on choosing the final concept.. hmm.. its tricky.. im just gonna go on heart and not brain..erhsubstance.. i like the green concept visually the most so far... and i dont think i got any problem submitting that one as final entry... heh time will tell... i might maybe just end up with lots of concepts and no final image.... its all good

..awell i gotta nice concept out of the drawing i previously posted... painted in pchat.. if id have to choose from the concepts i got now i think this one would be the most fun to develop.. both esthetically and conceptual-wise..

04 April 2005, 12:05 PM
wow amazing artwork!

04 April 2005, 12:44 PM
there is really very interesting ideas. i liked so much, ideas are really looks attractive...

04 April 2005, 08:58 PM
great concept.
brilliant style. i really dig it!!

04 April 2005, 09:11 PM
tjena! det ser jatte bra ut! maybe you should change the angle a bit... i think that would make it more interesting. and this is an interesting concept but that's just a small suggestion...
lycka till och ha det bra!

04 April 2005, 11:01 AM
Wow! I really love your stile and wery outstanding idea...

Keep posting!

cheers: Kornél

04 April 2005, 04:39 PM
U got some serious skill, not only in ur concepts but ur compositions are classic but still fresh. Any of ur concepts would be worthy developing, and although the corporate has a definite witty message about it, i kinda prefer the guy with the big red skull over his head. That one just has instant impact.

Either way tho, ur in the right track.

Good luck mate.

05 May 2005, 03:42 AM (

=) thxxx!

marcheen: tja! ;) ..nice thinking... ive had that thought myself =)

sho-nuff: i hear ya... well dilemmas sucks so i guess ill have to destroy this problem by making a better concept eeh : P... i think i might have something cool going.. but ill hold that concept till the end of the challenge.

this latest concept is probably the weakest one thought-wise.. and it wont have anything todo with the final concept since its partly stolen(btmn) : P.. batman serves these guys in coolness.. the rest remains a secret... -__-

not that much time guessing an allnighter in 11days weeks..

new conceptu

05 May 2005, 01:00 PM
love the last one...

your ideas and the technique and execution really stand out.... cool stuff.

05 May 2005, 12:43 AM (

hey thx again duddlebug! and good luck finishing your piece aswell...

heh.. well this is my last concept... 11 hours to go.. and this aint "the one"... i think i can work something out in the last minute though... if the servers can take me im in!

05 May 2005, 10:45 AM (

[here goes…. Something came up in the last minute… so the final concept i had in mind didnt make it in time…. Its alright though.. Plan B.. take one of the earlier concepts and finish it]

This concept came to life under a quick session of Photoshop doodles, very simple sketch.. painted with large brushes on one layer.

The idea was to portray the employee - the corporate slave...... mastered by his heavy workload. The guy in the suit and portfolio with this roaring engine of power strapped to his back..

05 May 2005, 10:47 AM (

I dont start with the traditional Line Art when im doing a piece... i normally just get to the colors right ahead and just start designing with large bold strokes with the idea in the back of my head. This painting actually started in a Paintchat(shi-painter powered by java).. i was just sketching and having some fun with some fellow paintchatters when i desided to make some concepts for the challenge.... i had my previous Concept sketch in mind and felt that id liked to explore the idea some more.

Didnt take long before i nailed the design.. 5-10 minutes maybe and then i knew where to go with this painting.

The landscape the guy and this “train” is standing in is located in a toxicated industrial area with a demanding City with skyscrapers in the background to set the tone and support the concept. The unnatural leaning position also serves the concept.. are we, the humans constructed for living under this kinda pressure?

05 May 2005, 10:48 AM (

Another 15-20 minutes and i reached this point, not that much has happend to the concept.. the concept started out pretty strong. I’ve added some arrows pointing away from the employee to illustrate obligation and demand.

05 May 2005, 10:51 AM (

The paintchat session ends here... ive taken plenty of time to reach this point... browsing forums, chatting and painting at the same time etc. Its very refined and in a way i do consider it to be finished at this point. Ive used up most of the paintchats potential and theres not much to do after this stage.

05 May 2005, 10:54 AM (

The problem with working in programs such as paintchats is that u often work in screen resolution so it wont work any good if your thinking of printing it. In the paintchat the painting resolution was only about 1300x700.

Awell i desided not to let that stop me... so instead of working against it, i worked with it. Beefed up the Resolution to circa 3400x1900. Sure it got a little bit grainy, but why does that have to be a bad thing? To fix the problem of up-res:ing i took a really large scanned gouache painting i had done earlier and placed the layer on top of the original painting. Layer-blending option setted on ‘Overlay’ ... lets the painting shine through the gouache painting without its colors to be affected that much.... gives the digital painting a nice rich texture, entertaining the viewer. And finally i picked out a funky custom made brush in photoshop.. and with a new layer on top i started to refining the painting, changed the “train” to look more like a train.. added some beauty strokes here and there....... and voila, painting done!

What a great thread! I'm surprised you don't have more replies.

I love your painting style and you have some really great ideas here, both conceptually and visually. This final image is very emotive. Fantastic work.

05 May 2005, 11:11 AM
O my..... This is so... God!
I'm absolutely fascinated by your style!
Your sketches are fantastic. Perfect color palette and a great "real" style.

Hi Dan, excellent ideas, I love all of them. I really like your style and sketches.

05 May 2005, 10:35 PM
I just loved your concept sketches... especially 'turn'. It has a great composition & values. I would particularly like to know how you did the floor in that image.

Cool concept for your final image, quite unique- a sort of steampunk version of 1984.
I hope to see more of your sketches in the future!
Good luck--

05 May 2005, 05:49 PM
I think i said it before: a pleasure to watch your concepts. REally really nice.
Echoes of Bill Plympton in there i think...

05 May 2005, 02:01 AM
I liked your entry so much I registered to tell you. Your painting style great I like all the concepts this one the most though because it isn't so striaght forward as two creatures its more, I don't know, symbolic.

05 May 2005, 03:05 AM
Hey, sorry for being slow on the replies guys...

Thx Neubius, ered dium!

Paperclip: =)thx .. i remember i was going for something far more complex in that image... didnt work out so i went more raw on the graphics on that piece... hence how the floor stands out maybe... idunno.. just a three layer combo... with an overlay gouache-painting (overlay) in between.... and some lucky strokes with a flat brush in photoshop. Hard to explain.. but the knowledge about colors and surfaces/lifestudies itself will do the trick.. so dont get caught in photoshop layer tricks etc. just yet if you dont feel ready. Best way to learn is to go right ahead and just paint .. keep it simple, dont take it too serious (blah general tip.. not necessarily aimed at you).

ET: hey thx again!... googled plympton.. slightly recognized his name... and definitely his work.. yeah i can dig that =)

Katsuk: Sweet.. i appreciate that dude... and hey, welcome to CGTalk!
