Latest Update: Final Image: This is it! (

A few words about the story: The humans have lost the biggest war in history against the machines. Life on Earth is almost gone because of the nuclear and chemical bombs. The machines have no idea how to react to this situation and so they turn back on human history trying to find the answers. This is how they started building entire fake green forests made in plastic, they built temples and saw them selves as ancient goods enslaving the humans and forcing them to breath throw their artificial air purifying systems.
Ok, about the composition. It's a static composition built around the main character. All the elements are colored, positioned and lighted so the eye looks at the main character first and then discovers the rest of the surroundings. To achieve that I used a single bright light on the main character and let the secondary ones disappear in the shadows. The main colors I used, green and red are also a complementary contrast between warm and cold. To break the static structure I used deferent elements like plants and objects. They add more depth to the composition.

So that’s all I could think about this work at this point. Thank you all for your support, opinions and advices. You’ve been a great help and without your support I wouldn’t get to finish it. It’s been fun and challenging. Thanks again guys! I’ll see you on the next one! Good luck to you all!

03 March 2005, 10:12 AM (

Hey guys! It’s nice to work compete again with so many talented artists. This theme is great. I had some ideas but this is my favorite.
The action takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. After a 1000 years war, the machines took over the planet and enslaved the human survivors. They started rebuilding the cities taking the roman and greece world as example.

03 March 2005, 10:31 AM

Wellcome. Good luck and lots of inspiration. I like your ideea, allthough it seems inspired from The Matrix, but aniway the fact that the robots are inspired from the ancient greek and roman civilizations is something new and I like it.
I'm curious to see how this ideea will develop, I'll come here often. :)

03 March 2005, 10:51 AM
He there,Nice sketches!!Althouhg personaly i find that there's a little Jabba feeling about it.Yuor concept seems great and I'm really wandering "la suite",hé,hé!!!
Be'll back.....Good luck to you and especialy have fun!!!

03 March 2005, 11:21 AM
Hi. Looks cool man. I like the servants. Hope that they will be naked. Nice concept sketch. I will watch your thread.

My Master and Servant (

03 March 2005, 11:42 AM
Great sketch. The figures look really nice.

Good luck, man!

03 March 2005, 12:03 PM (

Hey guys! Nice to see you here, I’m working all this weekend on this image so I’ll post some other images soon.
Dimmur: yes, it’s a similar idea but I’m taking it in a totally different direction from The Matrix.
OKMER: You’re right, there is a bit of Jabba feeling around the composition. But that’s a good thing, right?
Velinov: thanks man, glad you like it. I think the servants will be dressed in some kind of freaky-sado outfit.

03 March 2005, 01:25 PM
Good work, Mihai. This concept sketch is beautiful. My only suggestion (too soon to make suggestions?) is to widen the opening over the master to give him some contrast lighting and make him stand out.

Your Grand Space Opera was one of my favourites, so I'm sure you'll do a great job with this one!

03 March 2005, 02:02 PM (

Hello Andreasrocha, nice to see you again here. You're right about the composition, but for the moment I'll live it the way it is..after the first color test I'll make some changes. Thanks for the comment

03 March 2005, 03:14 PM (

Started drawing the line art, no time to lose..

03 March 2005, 03:49 PM
I love your composition and your lighting, brilliant stuff. BUT- where are the humans? It's a requirement you know!

Wow. Your figures have wonderful solidity. Which brushes are you using for the line art?
Hang in there, it's going well!

03 March 2005, 04:12 PM
Hello there Paperclip! The idea is that the girls that you see are humans but they depend on the big robot guy to breath ( I'll add some tubes that connect them to the machine later ) because the air is very toxic after the war ended.

03 March 2005, 04:25 PM
this looks awsome!!

03 March 2005, 04:47 PM
I like it! Can't wait to see it in color. Try to avoide a boring composition, don't place it in the center of the image.

Good luck

03 March 2005, 04:52 PM
yeah! the fat ceasar! looks cooler than Iceberg :)

And sexy chicks are always a good element ;)
(maybe some grapefluits and other luxury items on the table and It's becoming truly a brilliant neo-classic painting) :)

Subscribing this one for sure!

03 March 2005, 05:05 PM (

More line art. Glad to see other people looking over my work. I'll take a break soon to check out the competition :)

03 March 2005, 05:10 PM
oh my god, thats sick in an excellent sorta way, phew,u may want to off center the fat guy though, too late for that??

03 March 2005, 06:02 PM
really impressive dynamics and graphic.

don't hesitate visiting my M&S page (

03 March 2005, 06:49 PM
........... your skill is totally awesome! can't say anything ,
just question , do u do your line art with pen and scan in or done it in photoshop?

03 March 2005, 06:58 PM
Beautiful lineart.

I don't know if the girl on the right is resting her right hand on the throne, but she seems to need some sort of support, standing in that position. Perhaps she could be turning her head in disgust, just like Leia did with Jabba.

Great work!

03 March 2005, 07:10 PM
My only suggestion is that the slave on the right seems too willing to approach..if he's tugging on that leasy the slave should look more resisitant...

I'm really looking foward to see how this sucker turns out...the potential for lighting is pretty of luck to you!

03 March 2005, 07:22 PM
This looks very promising!!! :D I like the idea a lot!

03 March 2005, 07:25 PM
Man, that guy is FAT! This looks very promising! Have fun rendering all that blubber! SOFT flesh!

03 March 2005, 09:03 PM (

Uff...I guess this will be the final line art, maybe just a few more details.
I see new people here. That makes me very happy :)
monsitj: I draw on paper and use it as background for the final line art.
andreasrocha: yes that would be a good idea but it's not my intention here. The servants need air from the machine to survive the earth's toxic atmosphere. At the same time, the machines enslave the humans just for the fun of it. If this guy wants to go somewhere else the servants will die.
Wysiwyg: the same as above... thanks for the crits. It will be a great challenge to color this sucker :)
fooxoo: thanks! glad you like it
teknotek83: yes, that guy is indeed very fat :)

03 March 2005, 09:09 PM
wow amazing,screw what i sed b4!!

03 March 2005, 09:32 PM
looks awesome dude! Good luck!

03 March 2005, 09:43 PM
i like the look of it and the idea. it's scary in a way.

03 March 2005, 09:59 PM
wow, that is brilliant! brilliant i tell you.

03 March 2005, 10:01 PM
 good sketch,good consept!
i'm waiting for your next art work:)

03 March 2005, 10:01 PM
Hi taz23! Its a great pleasure seeing u in this challenge, knowing one more superb piece of art will be created! Its a nice idea u have, a historical looking one but with the right amount of changes to looks fresh and original. Cant wait for ur further procedure! Good luck man! :)

03 March 2005, 10:41 PM
I like it very much, the big guy is great, and servantesses in gasmasks...

03 March 2005, 11:39 PM
Great work. I have still much to exercise... :D

03 March 2005, 12:55 AM
Nice sketch here !
But be careful about the bust of the woman standing on the right : she's too long-waisted, and her right leg also seems too long for me... ;)
Good luck.

03 March 2005, 01:06 AM
Great lineart!

Arctis is right, I think. Her waist is too long, and her left leg seems too short because of foreshortening. Perhaps moving it more outwards almost parallel to the throne. You could also rest the left foot entirely on the floor instead of lifting. Just suggestions.
The left girl's right shoulder also seems to high up.

Those two girls below are my favourite. The way they seem to be feed on each other's air. Just beautiful.

03 March 2005, 01:09 AM
I like the sex-appeal of this piece. I think the woman standing on the right has too small feet compared to the rest of her porportions. The woman sitting at the left has a funky shoulder. Her right breast (our left) would be pulled higher towards the shoulder too (the breastline follows th shoulder line). Very nice sketching/lineart.

03 March 2005, 01:09 AM (

Just a quick lights-shadows study before I start adding the first colors

03 March 2005, 01:54 AM
Great concept, reminds me a little bit of the big guy in Dune. Good luck, will be watching.

03 March 2005, 02:02 AM
Nice perspective with the stairs leading up.....I love your figures

03 March 2005, 03:39 AM
your entry is my most favourite in this challenge now! great line art and great lighting , and after check your GSO entry , I can't imagine what will come out!

03 March 2005, 05:15 AM
Hey, that looks awesome! I like how you made the robot look like a fat glutton. I'm eager to see this come together :)

03 March 2005, 06:36 AM
I really, really, really LOVE IT! Your figures are fantastic!!! Good luck!

03 March 2005, 06:40 AM
hey man, love the mood very much, can't wait to see the final artwork.

03 March 2005, 06:55 AM
Subscribing, I want to see how this ends :P

03 March 2005, 08:08 AM
Well, now you've got everyone's attention. This is gonna turn out great...I really like the murky feeling you have there in the clouds. Looks like a machine's idea for a sunday's beautiful morning.

03 March 2005, 08:41 AM
Hello everybody. Just woke up and drink my morning coffee :D. I see new guys here and tones of new comments. That's great, means that my concept works! I'll try to answer the best as I can to everybody :wise:

goktug: 10x dude

NinjaASSN: Hey there mate! Great to see you again. Glad you like my piece means a lot. :)

misiek1125: Thanks man, I'm glad you like it. Stay close :)

ecki: 10x, exercise is everything you know... :wise:

Arctis: I'm trying to exaggerate my characters a bit to show the movement and the attitude of my characters.

andreasrocha: You're right about that. But again, I sacrifice perfection for the composition. The girl in the right is in movement - if I'll rest her right foot that will create a break of the motion. It's the same with the girl on the left, her shoulder is lifted more then it should but helps me with the composition. Her shoulder line is following the perspective lines and by that it gives her great attitude. Till the end I'll make more changes regarding those problems but for now it's ok by me :p

oz haver: You may be right about that breast :P I'll see what I can do about that. 10x

riki: yes, you're right, the fat guy gives me the same feeling of the baron (Harkonen?) from Dune.

Rhenia: 10x. It's a very simple one-point perspective. I wanted a more neo-classic touch of the composition.

monsitj: 10x dude, means so much to me that you like. Hope I'll not disappoint you

Evil Gerbil: Yes, It's funny. Why would a robot wanna look fat when every human tries to look skinny, make you wander doesn't it

fooxoo: 10x again, hope I'll not disappoint you

eclipson: 10x dude! stay close and you'll see

03 March 2005, 08:50 AM
Every challenge becomes so much display of skill and this time is no surprise.

Great job! ... I dont have any usefull comments to offer... soo my comment is

wassup?

03 March 2005, 10:07 AM

Sympathetic concept and drawing good starting to be followed.
Good luck for the continuation

03 March 2005, 10:10 AM
the illustration reminds me of star wars... nice atmosphere you got going there..

03 March 2005, 11:45 AM (

OK, I played a bit with the colors. I'm kinda happy with them for now. I have many values to work with.

03 March 2005, 12:18 PM
nice, have a velvet rope around them haha.

03 March 2005, 12:18 PM
looks very promising! Good luck

Green bird
03 March 2005, 03:02 PM
Good composition and colors.
What I like the most here, is that it makes us remember movies like Dune and star wars, but your picture still keeps his own strong identity.
Really like it so far :)

03 March 2005, 04:34 PM (

I think this works much better. Tell me opinions.

03 March 2005, 04:36 PM
sweet wonders wow, another one with mad skills !

03 March 2005, 05:13 PM
your latest post is definitlely better! awesome!

03 March 2005, 05:29 PM
Oh! this composition and colors are great! the mask designs are so cool, what a twisted thing, this is going to be good!

03 March 2005, 06:14 PM
most impressive work the lighting and atmosphere is wonder full keep it up

03 March 2005, 06:17 PM
Wow, I like this composition. The idea and concepts in the picture are great too, I love it! The "master" sort of reminds me of Jabba the Hut from Star Wars, but maybe it's just because he's surrounding himself with beautiful women and he's rather blubby. LOL! Great work so far, can't wait to see more updates!

03 March 2005, 06:38 PM
this is so good that i might die.

*time of death 19:40*

03 March 2005, 06:58 PM
Wow! very nice, i think ur final one is gonna kick ass, interesting concept, go go go!

03 March 2005, 07:07 PM
Thanks for your kind words guys! They really help me to move on!

03 March 2005, 08:30 PM
This is looking good. I particularly like the light coming from directly above, and the great use of that red material to lead the eye into the image. Nice job.

03 March 2005, 08:40 PM
jep, Its better, it gives the fat guy more status. I like the lightpoints trough the ornament.

03 March 2005, 09:28 PM
The lighting rocks. Also the outside enviroment, allthough unpolished, looks promising.

03 March 2005, 09:28 PM (

One last update before I'll go to bed.

03 March 2005, 09:31 PM
wow excellent pic, i like it, the atmophere is wonderfull and the colors are a good choice, i wait the suite, good work:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 10:43 PM
ce pot sa spun decat BAFTA

03 March 2005, 10:50 PM
The latest update is fantastic. I love what you're doing with the background. :)

03 March 2005, 11:03 PM
The coloured version is wonderful. But you still can't get the right athmosphere with the perspective. It just doesn't evoke the feeling of oppression in the viewer. Although you made a very successful coloration.
I will watch you...

03 March 2005, 11:08 PM
You've got some really great stuff going on here! I love the detail in the wall and the overall feel of the colors. Keep at it.

03 March 2005, 11:15 PM

great concept, great composition (especially the triangle between the master and the two nearest 'servants'), awesome lighting (really adds focus on the master), and great environment... dude, it's just freakin' GREAT! Ha ha!

Looking forward to seeing more! keep it up!

Cheers, and good luck!

03 March 2005, 12:12 AM
Damn you move quickly... I've been watching this over the last few days and i believe you've almost posted every day. Loving the detail on the walls, and the way the subtle smoke is lit up by the ceiling light - very nice.

Can't wait to see more. I'll check tomorrow, chances are you'll have something new by then :)

03 March 2005, 12:35 AM
this is too cool. no crits at all:)

03 March 2005, 01:34 AM
Great Stuff man!! Love it! The celtics simbols is nice thouch..nothing to say...its coming wonderfuly..

03 March 2005, 01:52 AM
jezz.. furious progress mate.fine concepts and the rendering is just fabulous~gotta love the light that hit the characters..dig ur stuff and i gotta follow this to the end

03 March 2005, 01:56 AM
very cool lighting going on. the background and light coming through the stonework are pretty killer too.

03 March 2005, 06:49 AM
The girl lying in front of the altar has two left feet!! Check it out O_O

Was that done on purpose?

03 March 2005, 08:28 AM
nice start, you might want to increase contrast a bit to create more depth. Anyways, just keep working!

03 March 2005, 10:27 AM
foxxoo: I haven't seen that. It's so embarrassing  thanks to your sharp aye I've corrected that just in time

Ranath: It's still to soon to work on the final contrasts. At this point I'm trying to get the right colors and anatomic anomalies :argh: :)

Nigel Q: Thanks man, I'm trying to get the characters, lights and colors in the best composition possible. I believe that's my biggest goal in this picture.

ms@zx: I'm using that big powerful light from above to bring out the main character (the big, fat robot bastard) and play a bit with the rest of the characters.

BloodTaster: You know your stuff man. Yes, those are indeed celtic designs.

Ant4d: Thanks dude!

peterpop88: This is my fourth day in the contest in witch I've worked continuously. It's a relaxing break until the next movie that pups up and I really needed a break from all the beers an girls :p

artjunkie: Yes, the interaction between the three characters tell the story of this picture. The other two servants complete the rest of the story.

warezoo: Thanks dude, stay close there's more coming.

ecki: You have a good point there, but my goal with this composition is to show the oppression in a more discreet way. It's not a violent domination of the main character. The servants depend on their master witch gives them air to breathe.

liiga: Thanks, the background is very important in this composition. It reflects the luxury and tells an entire story just by itself.

bombeu: merci mosule! :)

MDN67: Thanks man!

Dimmur: Thanks, I'm working right now on the background city.

Thanks guys again for sharing your opinions on this image. You are all great! I'm trying to answer the best I can to everyone. I have a day off from the studio because of some floor problems they have there so I have more time to work on this image :applause:

03 March 2005, 10:41 AM
Wow man, you have an amazing imagination and amazing talent. Good luck ;)

03 March 2005, 10:50 AM
If you didn't notice from my previous post, one thing that I'll be specifically paying attention to is the man's blubber. Haha, sorry. But I see so much potential in the fattiness. I think it'd be great if you would include some pinks on him. Perhaps the prime example in what I'm talking about can be seen here (

The subtle shaft of light coming from above is wonderful :-)

03 March 2005, 11:05 AM
haunting_shadow: Thanks man

teknotek83: Ha ha ha, that's a great image! The only problem is that my character doesn't have flash. He's all metal. At this moment the orange-pink light and absence of texture on the guy can full you but he's a big fat robot :)

03 March 2005, 01:08 PM
Welcome Mihai :D I am glad I wasnt too late :P

Keep on working.:buttrock:

03 March 2005, 01:59 PM
Taz23 That is one hell of an image already, lots to look at and that makes me happy :)

Definately like the change from post #49 to the current composition the high roof make it look more spacious like a palace... great stuff.

03 March 2005, 02:19 PM
Great composition there. I really like it. The subject matter is very sweet as well. This will be one of the best in my opinion.

Kudos amigo.

03 March 2005, 05:39 PM (

Work in progress. The city is in the early stage, still much work to do, plenty of time :)

03 March 2005, 05:46 PM
Taz - It's looking great so far. The colors you've chosen are sumptuous - very decadent, very appropriate for the theme you're painting. The lighting is great too. I'm worried about the two slaves on either side of the master: They're getting lost in the shadows a bit and are hard to read. Have you considerred more hilights, either bright ones from the top light and/or orange tones brought in from the sky on the sides? Or maybe taking off the back red curtains so that the slaves' heads were showing more of a sillhouette? Or maybe you want them to be more obscured, underscoring that their lives aren't very important to the master...

Anyhow, great work so far! Looks like another wonderful piece (and i really liked your GSO Challenge piece too.)

03 March 2005, 06:08 PM
only just strolled on this...lokking great. dark.. i can never seem to pull that off. great stuff

03 March 2005, 06:09 PM
I like the concept and composition you have going- the guy is truly grotesque, very well done. The colorwork is turning out nicely as well.
The only problem I could spot was with the girl on the stairs, on the right side of the drawing. Her lower left leg is smaller than the right one.

03 March 2005, 07:31 PM
Hey taz23,
maybe you could take a short view on my sketch (
I would like to hear what you think about it.
thx :)

ered dium
03 March 2005, 08:22 PM
Hi taz23 nice image, I really like the characters. The lighting and color also looks great. Very cool atmosphere!
No critics.

Master and Servant ( - Leo Calv

03 March 2005, 08:51 PM
hmmmm. i was having a closer look at this and thought maaaaaybe the girl on the bottom right is out of perspective. If she were lying pointed almost straight towards the first step, as she is, there would be almost her full height of space inbetween the two foreground characters and the base of the platform, but based on the size of the characters they're quite close to it.

hope this makes sense...

03 March 2005, 09:25 PM
Iese din ce in ce mai marfa . Argh, tre sa ma mai apuc si eu sa fac niste schite :argh:

03 March 2005, 10:49 PM
yes, big stuff here, that is a good one!

03 March 2005, 12:05 AM
Outstanding color scheme, and cool idea.

I will be keeping an eye on this one.

Good call on the mask, a good visual tool

03 March 2005, 12:14 AM
Hi there Taz!!!Well,I get back to my jabba saying and say that this is even better!!!I really like this weird feeling about it,some madness is in the air(sorry for my english).
Maybe it could be cool if there would be some more perspective in the red drapery on thestairs.I mean like it'coming even more towards us.
Anyway really great pic!!!One of my favorites so far!

03 March 2005, 12:39 AM
it's really going awesome...
really direct and good suggestion is about anatomy of the character...
the female character who is runing away, may be draw better. and the foots of them need to working on...
it's very small detail may be but important i think....
i really liked your work....
i'm looking forward to next steps......

03 March 2005, 12:53 AM
One of my favorite 2D pieces in the challenge.

My only beef with it is that I think there should be some subtle orange fill lighting from the exterior environment as sort of a halo light effect on the characters. The sky looks bright enough to be doing that at least.

03 March 2005, 01:04 AM
This really is inspiring!! Love the colors and the lighting.

03 March 2005, 01:47 AM
I like it!,good theme the colors are cool.Maybe the master should have red eyes or white yellowish instead of white .

03 March 2005, 03:20 AM
The light studies are really amazing. If your composition looks that good in grayscale the final should be outstanding. I don't see anything conceptually unique, but the output is splendid.

03 March 2005, 08:20 AM
Hello folks! Sorry for replying so late. My home computer just crashed yesterday and I had to reinstall my Windows and all the software. Nasty job  . I'm happy to see so many comments here, so I first have to thank you guys for taking so much interest in my work and for all the constructive crits. I'll try to answer as best I can to each one of you:

walrus: I didn't get to work on the characters to much. I still need to finish the background a bit so I can use the final tones and lights on the characters as a reflection of the overall atmosphere.

W!L: Thanks man!

sidchagan: Yes, both her legs are kin'da short, I'll change that tonight when I'll get home.

ecki: No problem dude, I've seen your work. After I'll finish righting this I'll see how I can help you with your image :)

ered dium: No crits? Heh, thanks man, maybe later eh? :)

Nigel Q: You have a point there man, it's a funny angle. Her legs are bent so she's not sitting straight on the floor. Does that make any sense to you? I'll see what I can do about that. I don't like these funny coincidences either.

Dimmur: treci la treaba si scoate niste schitze tari! :bounce:

choptider: Thanks dude!:)

Agent_Orange: Thanks man! You can keep both your eyes on this one. ha ha ha

OKMER: Glad you like it man. You think my character it better then Jabba? Wow that's a great compliment! Thanks again!

anil6tr: You're absolutely right about the anatomy. Like I sad before, I'll get into that as soon as I'll get more of the background done.

lane_daughtry: Glad you consider that . The shadows will reflect the orange and red colors from the background. I'll get into that very soon.

Samuraikuroi: Thanks man. It's great to know my work inspire other people!

hermine: The eyes are white with red-orange glow for the moment. Maybe I'll change that later.

oatz: Thanks! I'm doing grayscale tests from time to time. They really help with the contrasts. I didn't look for something unique in the designs. I want the viewer to get a familiar feeling when they see it reminding them of something. Some guys see it like StarWars, other like Dune, and that's a good thing in my opinion.

Ok, hope I got to answer to all you guys. If I sometimes don't make any sense please forgive me  . I have so much work to do on this one. Can't wait to get home.
Thanks again guys, you're really great! :applause:

03 March 2005, 08:22 AM
Hmm.. after u change the canvas of the pic there is a slight miss in the composition I think. The light part on the right takes too much attention and lead the viewers eye away from the action. In this one, I would go for a center composition, where the center of the pic would be very dynamic, so that it wouldnt looked static and boring. But the colors r superb!

03 March 2005, 08:28 AM
You're right Ninja. I'll try to finish more of the city first and after that I'll see how to crop it on the right. But like you said the center of attention should be the guy in the middle.

03 March 2005, 08:54 AM
Sorry I haven't commented sooner, this definately slipped under may art radar! This is looking great! Like the whole techno god type of feel.

Looking forward to seeing how the colouring pushes the concept forward. Good painting!

03 March 2005, 01:30 AM
Love the way this is coming together. From the start of your thumbnails to this version you had me glued! I do have some Questions: What are you useing Painter/photoshop? Graphic tablet? And who or what are your influences? Thank you. ( do you have a website?)

03 March 2005, 02:38 AM
NICE! i have no crits, only compliments. I love the small amount of light coming through the "Headboard" of the big guys bed, and i like that one of the girls is completely in shadow. It gives you something to "Find" in the piece.

excelent work. I have no doubt this one will make it to the book.

03 March 2005, 07:08 AM
mack72: Thanks man, glad your radar works now :wavey:

Samuraikuroi: I'm a Photoshop maniac :) for like 6-7 years. I made some illustrations with Painter but it's just not me. It's a great tool but I don't see my self as a paint artist. My tablet is a pretty small Wacom, not really the best tool out there. I have to buy one of these new generation tablets.

CodeNothing: Thanks for the compliments man. The lighting plays a big role in this image. I didn't get to work on them to much. At this moment I have big problems with my computer back home. I think I'm going to move my work at the studio:sad: .

03 March 2005, 03:52 PM
wow! foarte misto omule! imi place foarte mult, si culoarea e super! bafta mare!

03 March 2005, 03:56 PM
i really like the concept but i think the color of the top hatch is out of place. nowhere in the image is there such a strong radiance from any lightsorce and that one seems to be leading outside no?

just conflicting in my opinion.

anywho that is my 2 cents. ill definatly keep an eye out for this one. great work so far.

03 March 2005, 04:03 PM
i really like the concept but i think the color of the top hatch is out of place. nowhere in the image is there such a strong radiance from any lightsorce and that one seems to be leading outside no?

I have to agree with this comment . . .how the sky in the background is so warm and the lightsource from above is artifical. I did have to take a closer look to see if it was an open space letting light in or if it was its own lightsource. I like the effect the light is having on the scene but its a bit non sequitur.

03 March 2005, 04:08 PM
Great lighting Mihai, This is coming along so nice, My only thought would be that I'm not sure if the light at the top is a light or an openning. If it's a light, add some structure to the framing. If it's an openning, bring in some of the great color from outside. Beautiful work Mihai!

Colors are so far great! I like it, not a revolutionary idea but it will be more than enough - good luck

very cool dude. I love the lighting and the colours. Great use of reds.
I'll be watching this piece.

04 April 2005, 03:40 PM
Hey Taz23,
Great image and imagination. One thing I think I see is that the girl laying at the foot of the steps, her right foot is upside down. The arch should be at the top of her foot. Other than that, I love the little details like the book on the floor and knocked over globe.

04 April 2005, 08:54 AM (

Hey guys, I've been away for a wile. I had to change my HDD because the last one was very slow and I had problems with getting to SATA technology. Thanks to everyone for your opinions and involvement in this work. I made a new color study that could work better. Tell me your opinion.

04 April 2005, 09:20 AM
salut taz!
cea din dreapta pare ca are lumina naturala pe cand cea din stanga are lumina artificiala (neon ceva...). parerea mea. succes!

04 April 2005, 09:29 AM
I dont know - I like the orange, soft light better, it is more interesting and eye catching. Well it is for you to decide, but I d go with the orange one. The green, gray one - with that one you lose the caracters, the image gets plain... well that is just my taste.. Good luck with whatever you decide to do :)

You changed the foot! :D

04 April 2005, 10:09 AM
hey mihai,

Great stuff as always. How´s the concept-art-job going after your first job at the last challenge?

I personaly would prefer the right one - the colors are more fantasy-like. (Storm/Conan). But if you intend to have it more scifi > the left one fits better.

But one detail looks much more convincing on the left image: the shining light coming down from the roof window.

04 April 2005, 10:16 AM
the red one. So the right is much better imo. It would be also interesting if you try to
edit the skintones a bit more....the translucent effect. Maybe add some orange in the

The sky is very saturated while the foreground is desaturated. I think the foreground
need a bit more saturation.
Just a thought.

Awesome work so far

04 April 2005, 10:42 AM
I'm still not convinced witch one of them to continue. I like the jungle idea better because it gives me more stuff to work with and the darker colors bring the characters forward. The one with the orange sky is more eye-candy with the bright colors and stuff. I'm still not shore.

Fahrija: Heh, I'm doing well at the moment. They doubled my salary because some other studio was interested in my services  . At the moment I'm waiting for some new movies to start. I'm reading scripts and make concepts all day. It's great :bounce: ! hahaha

04 April 2005, 11:23 AM (

Yea, you guys might be right. I'll go for the first orange-sky one. I'll just show you this one before I'll delete it :P

04 April 2005, 11:31 AM
Yeah, I definately like the orange sky better, it just seems to punch up the image a little more, and the colour relationship to the red carpet is stonger. This is a beautiful piece... keep going!

my 2D entry:

04 April 2005, 11:33 AM
the orange one is definately nicer, tho you might wanna darken it down a bit, like with some semi-transparent curtains or something... or maybe it's just me that's a sucker for strong single bright focal points :)

04 April 2005, 11:49 AM
Arata foarte bine maestre, abia astept sa o vad terminata:)

Looking really food:) Just the foreshortenings of the legs and torso of the females looking strange, not quite good as you draw it. The green environment seemed to be much interesting, but maybe just a question of taste. Cant wait to see it finished.

Salutari si bafta, Eric

04 April 2005, 12:28 PM
hey, thats cheating... u are f****ig genius
btw, i like that right-red picture...backgound and colors are wicked. overall concept reminds my own M& fond of cyber-freeks too.

04 April 2005, 12:49 PM
i like the jungle, it gives it a close - humid feel - and the rendering of the knotwork + other detail is looking great

04 April 2005, 01:04 PM
Killer work, really love the look and feel.

04 April 2005, 01:24 PM
Very nice progress, no crits colour is great...

04 April 2005, 07:16 PM
its geting better and better! well done pal!:buttrock:

04 April 2005, 07:54 PM
Great work so far! The overall is very interesting. Concerning the colors, I think both might fit, but the right one may be more plausible with the subject. The industrial background and the cyborg-baron fit quite well together. Seeing his taste of costume on the girls around, I wonder what could he be doing in a tropycal forest. I'll follow you're progress! :)

04 April 2005, 05:58 AM
Excelent work taz23

as soon that i saw your name on this thread i knew i wouldn't be desappointed. Im going to sitback and watch carefully what your going to pull for this challenge.

Great work so far

lookin good there, the big guy looks cool,

04 April 2005, 09:04 AM
Hello guys, I'm working on the red sky image. I'm making some changes on the character proportion, position and stuff. I'll post something very soon. I'm thinking to work on both of them :D and see witch one will work better in the end. I think that's the best idea I have for the moment.

04 April 2005, 11:02 AM
Hey man! your stuff is awesome! I'll follow this closely! :) Keep updating us!

04 April 2005, 11:04 AM
always a good pic, with an excellent light, good work:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 11:26 AM
That advances very well your project, the choice of the colors is
particularly judicious, right if you some criticism allows on the
anatomy of the women, good luck for the continuation

04 April 2005, 11:48 AM
great light man! i'm impressed how many details you putted into it.
i'll be watching you!

OK, here is the update. I'm tryin' to get just some more detail in this image.

04 April 2005, 07:55 PM
i say the green one is better.

yes, the glow gives more heavy(est)to the big stuff in the middle,
but it keeps the girls in background a bite.

04 April 2005, 08:53 PM
For me too, the green one looks better. Because the womans dress and sheet makes a contrast.

04 April 2005, 08:57 PM
Wow! Great composition, lighting, color, detail, everything:drool:! Good luck:beer:

04 April 2005, 09:01 PM (

So I'm back on the first question. At this point it depends on you guys... I can't decide ha ha ha

04 April 2005, 09:10 PM
I think the "green" version has more richness with the roof lights and pure without the orange colors on the reflexion... Its up to you!

keep posting, cheers: Kornél

04 April 2005, 09:12 PM
IMHO, i`d say the one with the warm light on the left

04 April 2005, 09:13 PM
I have a question for all artists who do digital paintings. This digital art is awsome !
I am facinated by what you can actually do with a computer. I have been doing a lot of art with Painter software. I am a Graphic Design Student but I want to be a digital painter also. I plan to go to a University I will be taking a double emphassis in Graphic Design and Painting and drawing. Is there a major for this type of work ? I dont know what to take for my other emphasiss ? Is there any advice you professionals can give me ?

04 April 2005, 09:20 PM
They both look great, but the green one has a more unique atmosfere. The only thing is that the green light makes it a bit to monochrom; like the picture has been 'color balanced' to green. So I think if you wound go for the green then one lightsource with a different color affecting the subject would be nice, just my humble opinion.

Sorry baut my english, but aslong you understand me, no?

ered dium
04 April 2005, 10:35 PM
I'm agree with De Vlaming, the color of the green image maybe looks too monochrom (in the first one are more color and contrast). I Also prefer the second ceiling.
Maybe you can add more diferent colors to the green one.
I really like all the details....keep going

Master and Servant (

Leo Calv

04 April 2005, 10:56 PM
now it's more difficult to decide....I think the red one has more master and servant feeling somehow. And it has more life imo. Somehow the characters seem to be moving more than in the green one. The green one reminds me more of some kind of hidden sculpture in the jungle.

So I still pefer the red one.

04 April 2005, 11:19 PM
I really prefer the green one. The way you reduced the contrast of the shadows, and added that volume light coming from the ceiling really makes the air feel putrid and not breathable by humans. However I think the red cloth needs a bit of green tinting. It looks too "red" in my opinion.

Great work!

04 April 2005, 02:56 AM
I think they both look really great! I'm leaning toward the green one, though. It makes the image feel more uncomfortable. The red one is a little too warm, I think. Just be sure to mute some of those vibrant reds when they get away from the main focal points.

This piece is looking awesome. One of my favorites in this competition. Keep going!

04 April 2005, 08:22 AM
Hello guys. The dilemma continues. Let me just tell you more about the green one. Some people believe that the green doesn't work with the subject of this project. Well, let me just tell you :wise:
After the great war, the life on the planet dissapeared. So the question is: what will the machines do after they win the war? Well, I think they'll get bored :) . So they'll try to recreate stuff from human history to get the feeling of total supremacy and use the humans as toys. Because life on the planet dissapeared, the machines decided to recreate artificial forests (plastic plants) to get the same feeling as before. That's sick, I know but so are the machines

04 April 2005, 08:27 AM
I love this concept. I would definately go for the red, as it makes the image look much richer, more decadent. This will keep in line with your idea for the machines becoming more like humans. Think of the Roman Empire, that sort of thing.

04 April 2005, 11:38 AM (

No big changes. I'm starting to like this one more and more. Just so many things to work with, it's mmmmm...

04 April 2005, 12:34 PM
This entry is one of my favorites. I love the concept and idea. The piece is starting to come together nicely. Great Job! Im looking forward to the final image.

04 April 2005, 12:50 PM
Good attention to details dude. i prefer the one with the warm lighting, because it has that feeling of supremacy and concoured of the world that your character is in. The green one is a little bit calming. keep it coming dude. cant wait to see more.

04 April 2005, 12:59 PM
The new jungle theme one definitely has a more unified look with the lighting from above. I like the contrasts in it as well

04 April 2005, 05:26 AM
That's coming along nicely, I really like what you've done. The lighting looks great, adds some real atmosphere. I also really like the fabric spilling down the steps and the gas masks are a nice touch :)

04 April 2005, 11:19 AM
damn thats one low quality image.

but damn it looks fantastic.!

04 April 2005, 11:59 AM
Looks like a futuristic version of Master from my entry :), the image is great, but it loos somehow dirty to me, especially the green channel, like it was made in 70ths then scanned after 20 yers of exposure to light and dust, dunno, just my opinion, and yeah - no crits for the technical part at all, great work! (sory for my english)

04 April 2005, 03:58 PM
Looking very good. Do you have a higher quality image though? :)

Also, I noticed something. There is no wall on the right, correct? So maybe you should have a little bit of the light coming in that way since it's so strong coming in from the windows. Not as bright as those lights, of course, but just to be consistent with the light pattern.

04 April 2005, 06:00 PM
aaaaaaa........nush ce sa zic decat...tulai maica:) brilliant concept! superb work! good luck!

04 April 2005, 08:40 AM
Hey guys, I'm not dead :) not yet. I didn't have time these days to work on this, I hope I'll post something these days.

kingsal888: Thanx man, hope I'll finish it in time.

Arc80: I'll try to get the same feeling into this one, even more

oatz: Yes, that's why I've chosen this one to finish. There's much more stuff to work with.

Jowens: I'm glad you like it man. The atmosphere is very toxic because everithing is artificial, so the humans have to breathe thru the machines - like the fat guy

NOOB!: maybe I've overreacted with the image compression. I'll post some closeups soon.

victim336: I played with the colors and they look funny at this point :D

Evil Gerbil: You're perfectly right, after I've changed the light's angle I didn't work on the rest of the lights but I will.

oro: merci mosule!

Thanks again for the crits guys, really helpful to read your comments on my work.

04 April 2005, 04:32 PM
Hmm, I think you shouldnt put the cloth on the legs of the lady in the front, the naked legs finished the composition better. Best of luck :D

04 April 2005, 04:39 PM
This kind of reminds me of a painting I did a while ago which is still unfinished on my website... although this is already looking much better. Great lighting... a real dingie dirty feel to it.. Great work.

really cool! i like it. your use of red is nice, as is the highlight. one suggestion: i know its hard and i know this is already on your mind, but some parts of the texture look pasted on... its a little annoying to deal with that stuff but im sure you can do it no problem. the lighting is there and all of the correct information is there as well... but because of the stone-like texture, it becomes a bit flat. it already looks good, but im sure you can push it further. cool man!
