Well, it's about a female pirate sailing on her octopuss pet/ship.
I'm already late and still trying to figure out the basics of the image: vertical or horizontal layout? Will the pirate girl just be sitting there or rather standing in a more dynamic pose? Why did I chose an octopuss since I'm obviously not able to draw a single tentacle correctly?

04 April 2005, 08:16 PM (

Some slightly more detailed versions of the vertical layout.

04 April 2005, 08:19 PM (

A first try at the octopuss. Not quite sure of his expression yet. Not quite sure of anything actually :)

04 April 2005, 08:31 PM (

I guess I'll have to draw at least one trillion versions of this character before getting anything I'm happy with.
It's a very early doodle; I'm still wondering if I should go with something more cartoonish and simple or not.
Crits and suggestions of any kind are *most* welcome :)

04 April 2005, 08:59 PM
Hey man! I love you'r style and concepts! Keep it up, I'm sure you are on the right direction. Do you have a homepage, where I can see some more of you'r sketches? :)

04 April 2005, 09:38 PM
Very nice artwork, i love it, good luck with your challenge

04 April 2005, 11:35 PM
Cool chic. She looks a little dejected. She's a pirate right?

04 April 2005, 11:50 PM
very pitty longstockingish... great work cant wait to see how this evolves!

04 April 2005, 11:51 AM
Thanks for the cool comments :D

R Frederickson > Dejected? I don't know, maybe she's just pouty or something :)
am7 > I don't have a site; working on it though.

04 April 2005, 11:57 AM
Super Charcaters!

The octopus is cool... and a like the little octopus on the hilt of the sword.

Dunno what to suggest about stylisation (i'm having the same dilemma) except just go with it and see what comes out the other end!!

04 April 2005, 04:13 PM
Lovely sketches and characters! This looks fun! I like your name too! ;)

04 April 2005, 09:18 PM
Ho my. Both Duddlebug and Poshspice (a Gaiman and Pratchett reader hm? ;)) answering my tiny thread. This forum definitively lacks a faint smiley. Thank you! :D

04 April 2005, 09:18 PM (

Not the best drawing I ever made, but I had to post something or simply give up :)
This version of the pirate girl is a little awkward: I'm still not exactly sure of the amount of complexity and details I want in the final image, so I just doodle and see what's coming out of it.
Any comment or critic is really appreciated :)

04 April 2005, 10:02 PM
Ho my. Both Duddlebug and Poshspice (a Gaiman and Pratchett reader hm? ;)) answering my tiny thread. This forum definitively lacks a faint smiley. Thank you! :D

It may be tiny (at the moment!), but it's perfectly formed! :) Your characters have heaps of personality! And I really look forward to where your ideas go! I like the pirate girl with her big hat! And yes, I have read 'Good Omens'... :D

04 April 2005, 07:13 PM (

Ho boy, has it really been a week? Hopefully, the line art will be done soon and I'll finally be able to start adding color. Seeing all the wonderful color work in other threads is really inspiring and motivating. But I guess that's the point :)

I'm finally getting close to the final design of Mister Octopus (if anybody comes up with a better name, let me know :). The... err... thing on its head is pretty rough and still needs some tweaking/details/stuff but I'm quite happy with it.
The octopus itself also needs tweaking: I'm not sure at all one feels any speed in its posture, which is odd since there are big waves behind him. Yeah, those are waves. Kinda. Just there for testing purpose.

Any comment/critic/advice is most welcome. Thank you :)

04 April 2005, 07:38 AM
Your last coloured sketch is really funny !
Nothing to be crit for the moment
Keep going on :bounce:

04 April 2005, 11:45 AM
Hahaha... the octopus with the boat on his head is hilarious!

I love the cartoony feel... the irregular eyes... the big mouth... the BiG waves...

As far as the overall composition goes, i think it'd be worth moving him right a bit though (i dunno whether this is your composition or just a shot to show the octopus). He's a bit too central at the moment...

Can't wait to see you get into the colour. Are you going to use Photoshop? Or illustrator?

04 April 2005, 01:22 PM
really very very very funy and succesful drawings....

04 April 2005, 01:28 PM
your style is really good... i love this stuff. can just see the action in the few simple lines you have drawn... and the pirate girl is ace.. pirates rock! nought to crt.. just keep it coming...

and i have seen you in my thread lurking about for ages you stealth ninja you... no comments for me?

04 April 2005, 01:55 PM
That is an enjoyable scene. Really like the over/under water view.

04 April 2005, 02:50 PM
hehe i like your style ... im gonna watch this

will u show more sky/clouds or will u stick to a wide format ?

04 April 2005, 08:52 AM
Hi William !

Here I am to help you as I can for your speed problem !
At first, you design is pretty good ans it looks fun cartoon with just enought details on th pretty little chicky pirates woman.
About your last design : (As you know, I'm a little 3D animator mix with drummer and 2D drawer)... and your wave is incline to push the litlle Pussy named "Pulpy" to the left of the field. So incline just a little bit "Pulpy" in this direction , the boat on the other side and with your Woman showing the left too but bent to the right, you will have a big bent force line. Is that really clear for you. It will be like a Indiana Jones'whip in action...
You will have more stuff like a take "in action".

Regards little big boy.

04 April 2005, 11:21 AM
First of all... this picture rules.. I feel warm every time I see it:love: !!

I've printed it off and shown it around the office and here are some of the names we have come up with.. lol, you are not obliged to pick any of these:D

*H.M.S manylegs
*H.M.S whipdiddle (lol)
*Colin... lol
*Colin's mum... (enough) :surprised:
*In the Navy
*Voyage of 8
*Dude where's my boat?
*Return of the, oh wait, no way, you're kidding... he didn't just pull in on a humongous octopus did he?

lol... feel the love

04 April 2005, 01:54 PM
nice character sketchs! nice starting!
good luck:)

04 April 2005, 05:41 PM
i'll have to keep an eye on this one. its always nice to see some sillyness.

04 April 2005, 07:20 AM
ei man, i like this drawing. The concept is realy original so and the style. The character is very plastic and with good outfit, i'm interested what going to be the final composition, and collaboration in the scene. At this stage of work it looks very nice, i'm eager to see the final solution...

04 April 2005, 08:35 PM (

I finally found some time to finish the line. I wanted to post it last week-end, but I shamefully failed.
I'm not really happy with the line, because it still got some serious visual issues, but I guess I'll have to deal with them while coloring. Ho well.

04 April 2005, 08:57 PM (

The "final" composition. In the background, really badly and quickly drawn, is an island. I didn't want to show ground at first, but now I'm wondering. I you have any advice or comment or critic about that, or anything else, feel free to tell me. Thank you for dropping by :)

Ho, and I forgot: the flying things that look like dead levitating cut-in-half muffins are clouds. I swear.

04 April 2005, 09:00 PM
spacesnail: thanks a lot. Doing my best :D

duddlebug: thank you very much :) And as you guessed, it wasn't the final composition, just a shot of the octopus. As for the software, I'm going to use photoshop. I love illustrator rendering, but I want to try some things I never gave a shot at, like wet surfaces etc.

oatz: thank you! Glad you like it.

Vahn: thanks for your interest! Yes, clouds and sky are definitively planned. (love your avatar btw :)

Jimmimak: haha, thank you, these are cool names. Thank the people at your office for me :)

Jjjaaazzz: thank you; that helped (ho and Pulpy is a nice name too :)

anil6tr, W!L, goktug, RiverBarge, Asparta: thank you very much for your interest and the kind comments :)

04 April 2005, 08:50 PM (

I'm not much of a colorist. I usually stick with big blocks of color, and I'm happy with that. But since this thing is called a "challenge", I want to try things I never tried before. So here's my first attempt at a more "brushy" style. It came as a real surprise but I actually enjoyed that. It offers lots of freedom (perhaps too much freedom actually :D ) and it's kinda fun.
Nothing is really blocked in at this stage. This is mostly me playing with Photoshop brushes and discovering that it's more cool than defining selections with the pencil tool :D
Once I'm more confident, I'll erase it all and start again from scratch.
But I'd really appreciate to get any kind of feedback. Thank you in advance :)

04 April 2005, 09:09 PM
Your concept and character designs are pure GENIOUS! I'm sorry I haven't noticed your thread before! Looks like you have a great start on your paints... I can't wait to see more updates. Keep going, my friend... awesome work!

Cheers! :applause:

04 April 2005, 09:24 PM
I like the character design too, great job. I like your use of color .

allez ! courage!

04 April 2005, 10:48 PM
This is looking really nice! What a charming, fun scene! The face of the octopus is a little hard to read at the moment, but I'm sure that once you work more on his eyes, it'll be a lot more clear. I also like where you were going with the background island in that earlier sketch, and hope you'll reincorporate that. Anyhow, very delightful, good luck with it as you move forward... and good for you for challenging yourself with the color. It's the only way to grow...! :-)

04 April 2005, 12:05 AM
Oh my my, this is so fun! It's a real pleasure to look at it, the color choices are really sweet and make the mood pop out stronger. Awfully cute, I love! :D

04 April 2005, 07:56 AM
Hi Crowley, nice and funny picture. Original concept too.

I agree with Walrus, try to make the eyes of the octopus more readable. This is looking for the moment like a drawing from a comic where these kind of expressions are common and ok with a certain style, but I think for an illustration it needs to be defined a little more.

Looking forward to see it finished, good luck!:)

04 April 2005, 08:41 AM
I only want to say that that octopus is so cute! Awwww!

the concept is very lighthearted. Definetely refreshing!

04 April 2005, 10:13 AM
Lots of fun..........fantastic!

04 April 2005, 10:53 AM
Great style and thoose concepts are great! But I think you can do a better composition! Have you thought of trying this shot from different camera angles/perspectives?

Keep it up man!

04 April 2005, 12:46 PM
refreshing to see something like this..... your colours are great.. enjoying watching it form

04 April 2005, 12:48 PM
I love you concept and character designs a lot. The characters are very cute. The color choices are really beautiful. keep updating. Best of luck.

04 April 2005, 02:23 PM
hey, you've got a really intriguing style... can't wait to see this come along. From somebody who doesn't specialise in colouring either all i can say is enjoy the experience, i kinda figure that's what this contest is all about...getting a chance to share thoughts with your peers, push a few limits ouside your normal comfort zone, and foremost of all, enjoy yourself. Looks great so far!

04 April 2005, 08:16 PM (

New update, new colors. The previous color scheme was a little too... violent. So I decided to go with something more pastel. It's really basic, nothing final, but I think I'm getting closer to what I wanted (the keywords being "nice and funny"), and the overall mood seems more coherent.
As usual, any comment/critic/advice is much appreciated. Thank you :)

04 April 2005, 08:20 PM
W!L, keko, Paul Davidson, jeromoo, BlacKeri, stefn, artjunkie: thanks a lot for the kind comments. Much appreciated :)

Walrus & Thierry: thanks for the tip about the eyes. I was going to just make them plain white, but you got a good point there.
As for the background island, well... I fear it might take the attention away from the characters. On the other hand, it made the picture a little less empty. Maybe by making it fade in the distance...

am7: I've tried some other angles, but I always came back to his one. I know it's not original and very basic, but I kinda like its simplicity :)

redfrog: I couldn't agree more :)

04 April 2005, 08:46 PM
just getting better and better

04 April 2005, 05:40 AM
hehe your colors are nice and fit to the cute style.

I liked the close shot on your sketch in post #17 ... bring us closer crowley ! :D :applause:

04 April 2005, 08:09 AM
this pic getting pretty good indeed...
...I don't know why but i like the way the tentacles of the octopus appears under the water and i can say it is realy interesting conception about this expression. There is much work ahead of you, but i can see it's good style of drawing.
Though it's a cartoon character the hand of the girl (the left one) appears to me shorter than it have to be, perhaps you must work on that.
Actualy i like the point of view, because it seams to be the best descriptive angle, especialy if the tentacles will be included, and i think to make the under-water side of the octopus visible (well at least a bit of it) is very in common to the style of drawing, and it's pass pretty good...this is my opinion...keep goin

04 April 2005, 10:13 AM
Hmm.. how about changing their direction? The pirate girl could be pointing her sword at an oncoming ship in the distance. Gives the whole scene a sense of purpose instead of just posing and trying to be cute and all. Maybe that oncoming ship could be trying to flee from them because the people on the ship know too well about her 'fearsome' reputation. Just an idea. :)

04 April 2005, 02:18 AM
great animation looking art you got there. and yup the octo a bit difficult to read. cheeers maaan.

04 April 2005, 07:05 PM
Dude, this is awesome. Anyway, this is cool. Love the style and i can definately see this as a neat 2D animation. The gestures and the colours are great too. It feels a little empty though. Maybe add something on the background or something floating on the foreground. I don't know... just thinking here, hehehe. I'll be keeping up with this.

04 April 2005, 08:03 PM
W!L: thank you! :)

Vahn: thank you! I'll post close-ups soon :)

asparta: thanks for taking time to comment :)
About the underwater view, it's still planned, but I didn't work much on the water the other day and kinda forgot to do that part. Hem.
And for the left hand and arm, I agree. It's something that's been bugging me for quite some time now, and I just corrected it. :D

jugeras: thank you. I'll try to fix that in my next update. :)

jeromoo & Arc80: thanks for the comments. :D
I know my image looks empty and purposeless right now, and it's indeed something that's worrying me, even if I've some ideas to fill both background and foreground.
The overall composition is not really good but it's a little too late to make big changes, so I'll have to deal with it and do my best. But I guess this is a good lesson I learned here: don't just draw your characters in the easiest postures and call it a day. Think about the global composition.

Anyway, thanks everybody for the comments, I really appreciate the help a lot.

05 May 2005, 09:25 PM (

Ok, now I'm really late.
The pirate girl still requires some tweakings but she's mostly finished.
Crits, comments and advices are most welcome. Thank you :)

05 May 2005, 09:35 PM
your choice of colors is excellent ... i personally like that simple shading ... its what i used to do last year when i was drawing a comic and started to learn photoshop :D

I like the shading on the ship ... ah i just see ... her left leg ( the one she slung around the mast ) the boots rim should be a bit darker at the top ... it has no depth atm and looks painted on the skin :)

other than that.. im looking forward to see the whole picture in that style :D :D :D

05 May 2005, 09:40 PM
Coming along beautifully! :) Colours are fab, and she really cute and appealing! Do you do animation as well Guillaume? Your style lends itself to traditional 2D really well...

05 May 2005, 09:50 PM
amazing idea and so hilariously presented :D I think this is the cutest and funniest entry so far. Love the look of the squid and how fast he swims after the command of the mistress.

the composition is great, and i love how the water is splashing around them. As for the girl, I would personally have her to scream out a message to the boat/squid.. like Come on comrades.. or just Yarrrrrr.. a different expression would be great i think. But i still like this face too.. like she is proud and really like her servant. good relationship atleast!

05 May 2005, 02:17 AM
This is looking really cute! Great jopb on the girl, and i love the little crab too. She looks kind of young - it's the large eyes - so I find the lack of underwear a bit disturbing... But then, what do I know, I'm just a prudish, closed-minded Yank! :-)
Anyhow, love how it's coming, great work!

05 May 2005, 02:43 AM
The only thing i could critzs is the rib cage area is looking a little flat. Oh and i do kinda agree with WALRUS on the underwear issue, hehehe.
Other than that, LOVE the style dude  TRES MANIFIQUE

05 May 2005, 09:12 AM
Hi Guillaume ..............happy to have found you're thread.....this is a real nice piece you have.....I really like the style and idea......the large hat is a nice touch, and the outfit a unique design.......the overall idea is a nice and fun one.....Just coming by to say I like you're entry from all spects......Keep it up as you are, very well done......I'll look in again to see you're final touches.....All the best to you.........:arteest:

05 May 2005, 07:41 PM
Supersweet work. I really dig your loveley toon style! keep on rocking!!!

05 May 2005, 08:47 PM (

Just a small update.
First, I hid her lack of underwear :)
I also tried to narrow her eyes a little. Not sure this is better: I find that she looks somewhat weird now.
I started painting the boat. Well, it's actually almost finished, just lacking some little tweakings and details (moss?). Tell me what you think. Thank you :)

05 May 2005, 08:51 PM
Vahn: thank you :) Rim corrected :)

Poshspice: thank you :D
Unfortunately I don't do traditionnal animation but I really wish I could. Animation artists are a huge influence though :)

eparts: thanks :)
I see what you mean about her expression. This is an option I've been contemplating before I drew the girl, and I ultimately decided to go with something more like complicity. But I'll give a try at your idea, just to see what comes out of it.

Walrus & Arc80: thank you for the comments :)
About the underwear... well, this is not something I actually gave much attention, but now that you mention it I can't help thinking you're right. I added a piece of fabric to hide this part and this turned out okay I think.

Virtuoso, the1st_angel: thanks a lot for the cool comments :D

05 May 2005, 08:54 PM
really love yor use of colour, its lovely. I also really like your linework. The concept is brilliant. I agree, tweaking the eyes has left a wierd expression, I personally preffered the earlier one.
Keep going though, its coming along nicely.

Check out mine and let me know what you think : (http://showthread.php/?t=234420)

All feedback very appreciated!!

05 May 2005, 08:55 PM
Nah, she looks cute. love your little redhead. specially her large pirate clothes rock. maybe, just maybe go for bigger gloves to keep the oversize style of her clothing, u know thos musketeer style of gloves... in manner of that clothing style, how bout a nice corsage? :p
as for the anatomical problem of the eyes, i dont think the eyes are the problem, mybe just move the nose/lips block slightly left, to refit the middleline of the face according to the positioning of her eyes? and... the ear slightly right so that should solve the headproportion troubles.
All suggestions are of course just my own point of view and a simple matter of taste. keep on rocking, love your piece!!!

05 May 2005, 08:57 PM
ooh, what a nice style you have! and great colouring on the boat! this is such an amazing pic. its just so alive. :applause: i feel as if im suppose to go in the direction she is telling me to go. but i dont wanna, cause then i wont be able to see the pic anymore. hehe.

05 May 2005, 09:03 PM
yeah! finally something different from naked ladies and big muscles monsters!!
ca dechire pas mal ca^^ c mimi comme tout et c super joli
en tout cas j'adore ce dessin. j'ai hate de le voir fini

allez hop au boulot!

05 May 2005, 09:15 PM
I love your style. I can't wait until i see the finished piece. It is good to see a piece that is not so dark compared to many of the other entries i've seen.

05 May 2005, 12:04 AM
Hey Crowly, i view you submission time ago and always want to found your thread again for post something, on the first sigth when i saw your illustration i was very impressed, i like a lot your line and style, but know i must to put in my list your coloring, nice work, i hope you will win something.
sorry if i don't say more about the concept, maybe have more time to see your entire challenge soon.

My best wishes:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 09:17 AM
haha!Love it.Looks so rich and fun.Stylin too.:applause:

05 May 2005, 11:23 AM
Beautiful image! I love the colors and stile too...!

keep posting

cheers: Kornél

05 May 2005, 01:03 PM
Great cartoon style, color use and design. I just love it!

Maybe add some wind in her hair?

05 May 2005, 01:19 PM
This is such a brilliantly fun piece to look at. So full of energy and magical wonder... the kid in me giggles every time I look at it. Amazing stuff. I also thought you MUST be an animator (I see a very similar 'style' in alot of the animators I work with)... great character design!

Keep it up.

05 May 2005, 08:42 PM (

This is not exactly the final format of the image, and many things are still in the work. The sky and clouds, and the water in particular. And the little lamp too.

05 May 2005, 08:45 PM (

Some close-ups of the parts I've been working on. I'm pretty happy with the boat and the blade of the sword (which still requires some tweakings but is mostly okay I think).
On the other hand, I'm not really sure I'm going in the right direction with the flag and Octo's mouth, so if you have any comment...
I still have lots of things to do, but hopefully I'll be done by the end of the week.

05 May 2005, 08:50 PM
demonicoz, Mordalles, yznah, Kalomus, Is-boset, Johnlittle, kornel, artjunkie: thanks a lot to all of you. Such a cool feedback is really appreciated.

the1st_angel: you're sooo right about the ear and the way I could modify the whole face. Thanks a lot for the advices :D
And for the huge gloves... well, I do like huge gloves, believe me. This is something I tried at the beginning, but it didn't really fit in the composition.

Art2: that's a great suggestion. I feel stupid not to have thought about this before. Thanks a lot!

05 May 2005, 10:07 PM
No more critzs anymore  I just love the style and the simplicity of it

05 May 2005, 07:20 AM
go ahead! thats will be great!

I cant wait for the whole image!

cheers: Kornél

05 May 2005, 07:59 AM
This is one of my favorites in the challenge, hope it goes well for you, thx for your input on my picture.

05 May 2005, 03:01 PM
Looks great! :) Can't wait to see the final image.

05 May 2005, 09:15 PM
Allez zou, j'écris en français. Sory for the non-french readers, i'm a bit lazy this evening.
Bonsoir Guillaume. J'adore ton image qui me fait bien bien rigoler. Quel maîtrise dans le style cartoon - cartoon bien de chez nous, oserais-je dire !- Personnellement, je verrais bien un petit cacatoes ébouriffé dans la mâture...

Good luck

05 May 2005, 06:49 AM
Vey cute! Your color palette resembles Disney Animations. I realy like the concept and execution. Good luck.

05 May 2005, 05:19 PM
Close ups are cool... so very very clean and lovely...

I think it'll be super when it's all done!!

And I want an octopus to sail... it looks like fun!

05 May 2005, 05:22 PM
Nice clean style, crystal clear... love it.

05 May 2005, 12:23 AM (

Mr. Octo's hat is pretty much done, but I'm not sure it's really that cool... The little lamp is finished too. There are still some details I have to work on here and there (mostly tweakings on the face of the girl, based on 1st_angel comments; and adding wind in her hair, as Art2 suggested). And I have to do the water and background, of course, since they're like 0% done. Ack.
As always, any comment/critic/advice is welcome. Thank you!

05 May 2005, 12:27 AM
Arc80: thanks mate, that's awfully nice :D

Kornel: thanks a lot, I hope I won't disappoint :)

sgtpepper: wow, that's nice :D Thanks a lot (and it was my pleasure to comment your picture: I really love it)

am7: thank you!

spacesnail: huhu, thanks a lot :) (et pour le cacatoes, c'est une riche idée que je vais m'employer à réaliser... si j'ai le temps)

kerembeyit: thanks for the comparison, that's cool :)

duddlebug: thanks for dropping by :) And well, anything involving octopus is fun because octopus are, in essence, fun.

Jezzarts: thank you very much! You humble me :)

05 May 2005, 09:58 AM
Honestly, i think the details you have enough. You don't want it to contrast too much of the simplicity you have with your overall style. But anyway, the details you just added is perfect, effective, and good touch. JUst maybe darken the octopus's shadow a tad bit, just a tad bit.

I hope i see this idea animated one day. I think it will do well as a nice short story.    :bounce:

05 May 2005, 04:12 PM (

Well, I've reached my limits for this one. I still have some very small details to correct, but the picture is mostly finished. Ultimately, I decided to keep a simple background. I tried several things (an island, a ship, a fleet of pirates riding octopusses etc.) but they didn't really work. Maybe I'll try again this evening, or tomorrow; and then I'll post the final and upload it.
As always, any comment or critic is welcome.

Here's a link to a larger version (, if anyone happen to be interested (you never know :) ).
And also a little close-up on the girl's face:

05 May 2005, 04:34 PM
Have you ever tried adding Seaguls flying on the back. Specifically, top left corner of your page. Just a suggestion :D

still looks AWESOME bro

05 May 2005, 05:14 PM
Guillaume, you are almost done, I love this little peice, very simple but very awesome but I have to agree with Arc80, a few seagles would add up alote to your image especially in the empty space.

Genial ton image.

05 May 2005, 05:18 PM

It reminds me of Matt Dixon's 'monkey girl', which I also love. This is a very cool picture and I really like the simplicity and beauty of this. The colours in the sky are just perfect.
Hurray for you!
Good luck in the judging!

05 May 2005, 06:34 PM
hehe, yeah i dig the seagulls idea, eventually 2 dolpins for her crew as well?

looking so cute, keep on rocking Mate!!!

05 May 2005, 07:03 PM
hheeehe i luv it,great style!

05 May 2005, 05:46 PM (

Well, I tried to add some seagulls but they ended up looking like bats. Or flies. Big flies. I don't know... Shoudl I keep them?
I also added some ropes here and there, jsut for fun, but you'll have to look at the larger version ( of the pic to see them :)
Any comment is welcome as I'll upload the final image and the TIFF in the next few hours. Time for ultimate suggestions and tweakings :D

05 May 2005, 06:09 PM
Hey Guillaume, I think you should either make the seagulls bigger or just make them little vs. They are too detailed to be too far away, but they are too small to be close up...see?

Also I would put them higher up in the picture, right now they are cluttering up the bottom half of the picture, put a couple of teeny seagulls up where you have that beautiful big sky..
Other than that, amazing work, very cool indeed! That pretty...

05 May 2005, 06:53 PM
Dude, very NIIICE. Just push them back a bit and grey them out. and maybe 2 or 3 midium ones flying close to your characters on the top left. Other than that. ABOSULETY BRILLIANT     :applause:

cheers and goodluck on the final image.

05 May 2005, 07:02 PM
Paperclip & Archie, thanks for your suggestions.
I tried to put them higher in the sky, but they really look like bats, or little stains. On the other hand, I reduced them as Paperclip suggested, and it's much better I think. Thank you very much for that :)
I also tried to blend them a little in the sky (thanks Archie!), and deleted some of them to avoid any confusion with the water drops...
As for some closer seaguls... Well, to be frank, I'm a little tired and lazy right now, so I think I'll stop there and post the final image :D (I know, I know, I should be ashamed to say that kind of things :D )

05 May 2005, 07:03 PM
i agree w/ paperclip & arc80... a few gulls wont kill the picture & maybe put some up higher... overall, your stuffs' cute... & hurry up!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

05 May 2005, 07:22 PM (

Ok, here's a pic with some seaguls up in the sky. Tell me what you think. Thanks :)

05 May 2005, 07:26 PM
Hi sorry didn't see this in the making! Looks really great!! I think I actually prefer the previous arrangements of seagulls! Both are still good though! Really colourfull piece! Good luck!

05 May 2005, 07:27 PM
Perfect!

You don't want to make the seagulls the main focus of the picture, the picture just needed a little ...something there and now it has it!

The entire picture is finished now....congratulations! Go and submit it!:applause:

05 May 2005, 08:21 PM (

That's the final one and it's called "That's the way!" (which is a stupid title). That's funny how the picture turned out to be quite different from what I had in mind. Ho well.
As for the challenge itself, it was a blast to participate and see how other people worked. Quite fascinating and full of great lessons. I just wish I had more time to comment other people works :/
I'd really like to thank *very much* every single person who took some time to comment my tiny picture, that was really nice of you, something rare on the internet those days. /bow

Well, I almost forgot to write a little story to go with the picture (I'm sorry about the lousy english and the looooong text)

It's the story of a little girl called Plume. She was raised by an aunt of some sort who happened to own a restaurant on a small island. As soon as she was able to walk and hold things, Plume had to help with the clients and became a well known waitress.
The place was swarming with many kinds of people among whom were pirates. These guys were always talking about their adventures, and the treasures they were about to find, and the bottles they were about to drink. And then they would drink said bottles, and break them, and fight, and sleep, and drink a little more. Ultimately, they would go back to their ships and disappear in the horizon.
As time went by, Plume grew eager to become a pirate herself (mostly for the adventure part of the job; as she was not really into being drunk and stumbling all over the place). But no crew would take a girl that young with them, so she figured she had to be her own crew. She took what money she had gained over the years and decided to go to the city and buy a ship.
What you have to know about this world is that every boat was mounted on top of an animal. Cruelest pirates quite logically chose to ride sharks, whereas big merchandise ships were mainly using whales.
But sharks and whales cost a lot of money. So Plume had to buy one of the cheapest, slowest animals on sale: an octopus called Omally. She also bought a little boat to put on top of Omally, the kind of boat parents buy for their kids. Everybody laughed at Plume and Omally as they set sail for the first time.
After that day, they were seen in many places, living many adventures, avoiding many drinking and stumbling all over the place, and never finding any treasures. But, hey, Plume got to ride a really cool octopus for her whole life and Omally had a nice mistress. As far as fun and aventures go, I'll take that over any treasure everyday of the year.
