Latest Update: Coloring WIP: opposite defending (

hi everyone, thank you so much for all reply, this what i have right now, i really don´t know if ill manage to finish it in time, anyway ill try, thanks.

03 March 2005, 03:30 PM (

first rough ideia, its about a \\\"master\\\" defending a wounded \\\"servent\\\", after this mysterious man striked the beast with his sword...
still thinking about composition issues, but ill probably stick to this concept.

Thanks cgtalk, you all, and good luck to participants!

03 March 2005, 03:31 PM
great start man!!Welcome and good luck and loads of fun to you!!!

03 March 2005, 05:13 PM (

new comp, scaned a thumbnail skectch and made some rough tones... i´ll try some more.

03 March 2005, 05:14 PM (

new comp, scaned a thumbnail skectch and made some rough tones... i´ll try some more keeping this very loose.

03 March 2005, 05:27 PM
Good job, can't wait to see more.. :)
Is the liitle guy protecting the ape?

03 March 2005, 05:58 PM
:)yeahh, in fact the "little guy", its a girl, a kind of guardian master of this hidden woods, and at her service there are this "white giant beasts" to keep strangers away... but this warrior holding this sword caused some unexpected problems, the "white giant" battled him to prevent his passage, but could not resist his sword power, and now its wounded in the shoulder...! so the "guardian master girl" came in rescue... what will happen next its the question...!!! lol

btw, im thinking about "having snow" to the image, and maybe some armor to the "white beast", it would make more interesting and fun design. i also want to give an asiatic look to the charecters.

thank you all

03 March 2005, 06:03 PM
The second composition works better! More dynamic, and sharper perspective. Great stuff!

03 March 2005, 06:26 PM
Great composition. Not much else to say right now. Keep it up.

03 March 2005, 06:30 PM
This looks very promising! Agreed that the 2nd composition is more interesting. It would be nice if the whiteness of the beast were brought out some more. Maybe by some stray rays of light? From, say, the moon?

03 March 2005, 06:35 PM
I also think the second one is the most dynamic. I would try to keep the monochromatic color palette. It really works on the sketch.

03 March 2005, 07:38 PM
Espectá começo.

Looks great. Colors, lighting...good work!

03 March 2005, 07:49 PM
VEry nice angle! I like the lighting in this composition, it gives the characters good personality and sets a nice mood. Keep it up!

03 March 2005, 11:00 PM (

have just updated, another composition , this time i tried to sugest the white beast its in pain... ill be doing some more comps soon...

03 March 2005, 11:21 PM
Highlights are very good. I'm jealous. I can't highlight or shadow anything for shit.

03 March 2005, 11:33 PM
Seems very interesting. Idea is original too.

03 March 2005, 03:45 AM
impressive Cam angle:thumbsup:
good luck man!

03 March 2005, 06:14 AM
great stuff, colors as well as compo.gotta start with my rendering soon.

very inspiring work~

03 March 2005, 07:43 AM
nice work here..nice camera angle and composition..i'll keep my eye on this one..
best of luck

03 March 2005, 08:26 AM
so much emotion is being evoked, just lovely, keep it rollin in that direction.

Good Luck!!

03 March 2005, 11:01 AM
Great ! those concepts are amazing ,really love the last one and its blueish mood.Great sketch style!!!

03 March 2005, 11:07 AM
Hey there Renderwhite!!This is quit renderbleu, han?:D Great colors you're coming up with!!!Maybe it could be cool to enlarge a little bit your image to the high and put some temple looking like building coming up from behind the trees.
great stuff,And i'll surely be'll back here,this rocks!!!

03 March 2005, 11:19 AM
Amazing, Gonçalo...Lighting is really coming along. I don't know if you thought so already, but perhaps adding some dark green tones to widen your chromatic range...By the way, is that Photoshop or Painter? Looks like Painter...If it is, could I inquire what brushes your are using. Thanks...

Its great to see some portuguese talent over here!

03 March 2005, 11:24 AM
this looks really interesting. I will have to follow this entry. good luck!!

03 March 2005, 07:49 PM
Great concept and colors! Good luck!

03 March 2005, 07:57 PM
man that art is brilliant!

03 March 2005, 08:40 PM
I'm liking how you beefed up the scale. Should be interesting.

03 March 2005, 09:13 PM (

hi everyone! thank you so much for this amazing feedback, i´m happy that this concept its working...

still working on the comp, i quickly sketched a temple up there as OKMER sugested... something not working maybe should be near to the cam... anyway i´ll go try different thing and put snow in the scene...

03 March 2005, 09:16 PM
wow the temple looks amazing, and the rest of the piece is coming along great!

03 March 2005, 09:16 PM
I'm really loving this one. The blues are great and the subject matter is real cool. But one thing is that the first time I saw the image, I didn't notice the man defending the beast until I saw your other sketches. You might want to bring him out a tad bit more. Good luck on this one!

03 March 2005, 09:21 PM
Looks good, but what's going to be top right? I think the guy and the beast should be bigger, but then again you may be putting other stuff in there.

03 March 2005, 09:21 PM
andreasrocha, I intend to paint the image with more colors, not so monochromatic.... i´ll try not destroy it completely!... lol its photoshop, custom brushes... but i want to try painter.

03 March 2005, 09:34 PM
Great concept and sketches. The image really forced me to wonder, "who's the Master and who's the Servant?" (that's not a bad thing; it lends a sense of mystery to the relationship).

Looking forward to seeing it finished. :)

03 March 2005, 09:45 PM
love the mood, a very touching concept, good luck:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 09:59 PM
Wow! A very powerfull image. Im signing in this thread and will be watching closely for further updates. Good luck in the challenge!

03 March 2005, 11:10 PM
Hey there renderwhite. I really like what I've seen so far. Great mood and composition in a very japanese style. Yow could get the main character - the protector - in front a bit. Maybe by using a glowing light from some king of magic'll get the aye on the main character more. Great work so far anyway! :applause:

03 March 2005, 11:27 PM
Well well that looks really promising! Nice camera angle and composition!
Nothing I can crit. Great work man!

03 March 2005, 12:51 AM
Your sketch is promising : you've got a good hand at digital drawing !
Good luck.

03 March 2005, 12:57 AM
The addition of the building at the background has made me like this piece now. I'll keep watch. It needed the depth. ^_^

03 March 2005, 05:18 AM
Looks very nice. Good storytelling mood you've established. It really looks like a scene from some mystic asian tale. Nice job

03 March 2005, 10:09 AM

Sympathetic concept and drawing good starting to be followed.
Good luck for the continuation

03 March 2005, 10:15 AM
still a bit monochromatic but beautiful lighting and athmosphere. i love the compositions and the overlay with the swordman^^
pay attention with the tree you added in the last picture. i didn't understand it at all at the first view

03 March 2005, 02:21 PM (

Thanks, you are great.
no major difference, adding things, got to make this work... its kind of quicky so sorry if not reading ok.

03 March 2005, 04:40 PM
I'm prefering the concept just before this last one. The size of the ape, the angle of the camera and the light sources and all.

I like the idea of the weapon in the masters hand, in your last concept, but I think the protective hands backing the ape up, tell a stronger story - like he's putting himself in harms way. How about possibly mixing it up, and having one protectivly on the ape and the other hand ready with some cutting action?!

03 March 2005, 04:48 PM
yes, i agree, i´ll try your suggestion for sure! thank you

03 March 2005, 04:49 PM
Oh man, I think even better ditch the weapon altogether and suggest he'd take on the villain with only his hands for his servant, and have his front hand in a matial arts pose. I think it also makes, what would happen next, more intersting

Thats my 2 pennies, anywho

03 March 2005, 05:15 PM
lol, yeahhh, thats pretty interesting! i,ll see what comes up:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 06:21 PM
a bit monochromatic pallette - not that it would be something else with the "nightvision", but you really gotta be careful with values - push them to limits to avoid overall flatness.

i wouldn't trust to saturation that much, high saturations (with color dodge/similar fx brush) should come very late, in finishing steps, otherwise you end up adding saturation everywhere and that's not a good thing now is it. But maybe these are just concepts and it doesn't matter.

03 March 2005, 06:25 PM
I love the beautiful blue hues in this and the very intriguing composition adds a lot of interest. I like how the servant creature's facial expression is looking, he definitely seems in pain. Something's bothering me about the position of his arm though, it looks off. I think perhaps its slumping too much and the hand isn't quite right.

The background is looking fabulous.

Can't wait to see more updates!

03 March 2005, 06:37 PM
hei, lookin good there, this time the master looks like he's ready to fight anytime the enemy attack.

But i think there are better pose, i mean stronger pose,a master-like pose, show the enemy to "back off!"

In my opinion, master usually hold a weapon only by one hand, just a suggestion.:)

Love the mood and how you showed the bond between the master and servant,

03 March 2005, 07:48 PM
thank you guys:)

Ranath- thanks for the tips, i have to study more colors im not very strong with it, i´ll try to do my best. when you say "be careful with values - push them to limits to avoid overall flatness. " what exactly you mean?! thanks for the help

03 March 2005, 07:54 PM
Good concept

03 March 2005, 08:12 PM
Great concept, there are a good start...
good luck...

03 March 2005, 08:24 PM
hey great job! I disagree with some of the posts here..I think the monochrome palette works and gives it a good night feeling to might lose that when you try diving into color, so keep an earlier version on hand in case things go daffy :)

Also, earlier you mention possibly putting down snow, and i already see some light values showing up in the background..I would suggest using those values sparingly because your servant character is of course white. If you go back to some of your earlier images you see how beautifully he stands out against everything, because he's the lightest thing don't want to lose that feeling..just something to look out for, is all...

03 March 2005, 08:31 PM
hi renderwhite I think also your earlier sketch was waaay better. It was dynamic and very
This looks calm and has less lost a lot of energy.
I think you should go on with the concept you had befor this update.

03 March 2005, 06:29 PM
Goro & la volpe- Thanks for your points, i also think should stick to the main charecters and don´t push it very much in terms of background, or i´ll end up losing the main subject and mess things... thanks:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 07:17 PM
Nice atmosphere!

Great idea!
Good luck!

03 March 2005, 08:23 AM
Hello renderwhite. First time I have come here to your post. I did see when you first posted here. It's late right now so I will be brief (I will back up tomorrow to give more comments). First off, love what you have going on here. So much mood. 'I' think you should combine your first sketch:

with this sketch:

'I' think, that you are/were right on with the first sketch. Has/had some good detail. Highly liked the temple and steps in the background and the overall composition. However, 'I' thought the 'highlights' (high reflections off the Ape, blade, shine through the tree etc) from the second sketch were very 'cool' looking.
I have to agree with la volpe, stick with the monochromatic pallette. But, I also agree with you, 'some' color will help bring in some extra excitement... but just put 'other colors' here and there. Again, keeping the mono pallette your main driving force to keep that very cool mood going.
As for the snow, go for it man, bet you can get some awsome reflections and shadows on it.
OK, out for now. Hope my comments were worth something-smile.
Will be back up tomorrow.

Just so you know. not everyone agree about adding other coloured light sources, and I'm with Sylanya. A single strong colour light source brings unity to everything. I'm assuming you intend to do your subtly hue shifts on your final image, and that people are crit’ing your concept in a final image kind of manner.

03 March 2005, 05:21 AM
Hey RenderWhite, me again. Well, now I really feel more confident in saying, the heck with adding additional colors. I just read what Louise J. Browne wrote and man, have to agree. Stick with that mono deal you have going on.
Also, Louise J. Browne suggests losing that weapon altogether, come to think of it, with a gorilla that size, um, who needs a weapon. That ape is an atomic bomb with hair-smile.
It's still early to mix and match etc, but, one thing I cannot back off from is, the composition you have going on. Very neat angle. But, it's still early and time to think of 'even' cooler things. Wish you the best.
Will come back through out the months. Best.

(I go by Dragon, but, somone here already had that as their user name. So I am DragonDragon at this forum-if anyone cares... probably not- :) ).

hey, this looks awesome. fantastic dynamic, great colorscheme and very cool characters, short, rocks. :) looking forward to your next update, best luck and have loadsa fun, cheers

04 April 2005, 03:08 PM
Hi Gonzalo! Great work! I like your idea a lot. The fact that the agressor is out of sight is great, keep focus on the master protecting his servant. The light of the scene looks fantastic too. It has some movie feeling that I love. Your last sketch have some good additions (the hand palm twisted upside, the background and ground elements) but I think the gorilla has lost some strengh on it. It looks smaller, as if it has no legs and you have given more detail and protagonism to its armor wich makes it less defensless. I think if it where naked like your first sketch it will look more vulnerable and the wounded arm will be shown clearly. The position of the master was better too, with their arms open and the sword in the hand. The actual position with the spear is less dinamic.
Anyway, this is going great! See U around!

04 April 2005, 04:10 PM
Great compositions and light!

I'm waiting for a coloured version...

04 April 2005, 04:54 PM
Awesome stuff! Actually I like this concept better than you'r last.

Not sure why, it just came to my mind when looking on it.

Keep it up! :bounce:

04 April 2005, 05:44 PM
Awesome theme... really an outstanding dynamic concept. I actually liked the sketch that had the ape without the armor as opposed to the latest one that does. I think the white on the ape really made it easier to see that it is an ape for me than the other. Understanding however that this is not a completed image, I will definitely be watching this image closely. Definitely one of my favorites so far. Great work:buttrock:

04 April 2005, 08:16 AM
Dude, you were on fire. Where are ya?? Anybody know, what happened to RenderWhite?? Loved what he had going on. Maybe just life gettiing in the way?? RenderWhite, if ya still in, hope to see a WIP this week.
Dragon out.

04 April 2005, 08:27 PM (

hi everyone, i´ve been "out" for sometime but still in and wish to finish in time:) thank you so much for your responds and support, im so glad for that!
im updating "lineart" its kind of early stage, but i decided to post. ill try this method instead of drawing it all first, really running out of time:)!!!

04 April 2005, 08:58 PM
This looks GENIOUS! Love the imposing strength of the ape guy (servant, I presume)... nice composition too. Looks like you have a great start on you paints... please continue, I really want to see this one finished! :D

04 April 2005, 09:00 PM (

just a quick update to lineart, blood on the ground

04 April 2005, 09:38 PM
dragondragon, thank you so much for your critics and support, your comments really are worth something-smile. and you are a great guy, thanks.

artjunkie, yes thats it, thank you so much.

Thanks you in general.

04 April 2005, 09:46 PM
I also agree that the second composition works better. Maybe have the beast holding his wounded shoulder? Other than that, I like it so far. Having the small girl defending the huge beast is a nice change as well.

04 April 2005, 09:50 PM
Wow. The ape is amazing. Hell, the whole picture is amazing. I really like the posture of the master. Very... masterish :)
Can't wait to see more!

04 April 2005, 09:54 PM
wow... first time i see this.... very nice colouring scheme.. and compoistion adnd design o characters are inspired... great stuff

04 April 2005, 10:44 PM
Hi, I like where you're going with this a lot. Neat monster, and a dramatic tilt to the camera. You're still polishing it, but it feels right now like main human character isn't quite standing on the same slant that the whole background and everything else is set at.
Anyhow, good luck with it as you more forwards...!

04 April 2005, 11:20 PM
yeey finally an update! The colors are cool! An extra lightsource would be great imo.

But honestly I liked this concept a lot better. It was way more dynamic and had a lot
of depth...but maybe it's just me....

04 April 2005, 12:28 PM (

hello, thanks for your suggestions, ill keep them in mind...:) no big advance, just a color wip, not sure about somethings, well this is the hard part for me, i move slow and sometimes dont move at all:))) ohhh this is hard.

04 April 2005, 02:03 PM
first time i see this....mhhhm martial arts, huge apes and defending hidden forests ... just to my taste :D very nice work so far ... i like the way you are going with your colors and i think the characters positions and postures are just perfect now. :applause:

But i agree with goro ... the background with the little temple gave the composition more energy ...oh and a small detail: the left braid of the ape should be more tilted to the right, as i think its too close to the womans head now and theres is wind from the left so tilt it like the other one :D

04 April 2005, 02:19 PM
very good piece,i like the overall composition~:)

04 April 2005, 02:29 PM
Nice work. The feel of the ambience is just excellent. I love the beast design.

Good luck

04 April 2005, 08:49 PM
LOVELY work so far: great character design, composition, color choices and mood. I will totally be lurking in here to see the updates :D
04 April 2005, 10:44 PM
So great man, very cool ape and samurai. I think that you could make the foreground arm darker, almoust a silhouette and the little light in the blade and in the hand. Keep the good work!

04 April 2005, 07:06 AM
I like the angle... and the colors... and the idea... Oh, I like all of it! Can't wait to see the final image. Keep up the good work, wish you all the best! :bounce:

04 April 2005, 07:53 AM
Man, gotta get to bed. But, I had to drop by this post. Alright, you are back. Very, very cool. And man, looks like your moving along. Well, I have given you my feed back, and looks like you liked em. Thank you for reading-smile. Now, about your new update. Hate to tell ya, but have to agree with Goro, should have stuck with that 'Hollywood' mono/blue thing you had going on-smile. Again, gave your piece so much mood. But o'well, it's your art and it is your vision after all. And I know from the begining you wanted to add other colors. Well, still like it. Went for more of a green deal. Cool. It's going to look nice once you finish. I know it is.
One last note, I also have to agree with Vahn, watch the braid, looks like it is competing for attention against your girl.
Ok, I have to go to bed or I will be dead tired tomorrow. As usual, best my friend. Take care.

Dragon, out.

04 April 2005, 01:33 PM
It's really fantastic. Colors, composition; design, all is great:thumbsup:. Nothing to crits. Just have to follow this thread and keep my eyes wide open.

04 April 2005, 09:01 PM
You made well re-examine the concept colors, the other was well, but this one gains in force, go, go for the continuation.

04 April 2005, 11:55 PM
Yeah, I'm another one who liked your dramatic night scene. No worries though, you've still got my attention.

I think the master looks too relaxed. Possibly lift his arms up in a more horizontal pose, to give him a sense of urgency, plus possibly give him more facial expression.

I'm still loving your previous gorilla’s face too - from your blue version - he looks seriously pissed!! I'd put my money on him kicking this new gorillas butt!!

I know I said lose the weapons > please don't hit me - but... I kind’a… just a tiny bit… miss them now^ :D

Really glad to see your top entry back!!

04 April 2005, 03:39 AM
looking good. :applause: :bounce:

04 April 2005, 04:36 AM
Looking good so far keep up the good work !

04 April 2005, 05:24 AM
How about making the white gorrilla look more injured? Right now he doesn't look that badly hurt for the master to come to his aid. keep up with the effort!

very nice idea and I'm looking forward to see the details
anyway good luck for you !

04 April 2005, 04:23 PM
i love that!
nice rough coloring :D

04 April 2005, 04:33 PM
That's a great one, all I think is the lighting. Will ya light the main character up and drop the monster one down a little? That can make contrast of the pic and conflict with a stories. The hopeless monster in the dark and it's master in the light. Then the hand with a sword, that's not look like the thrill one that will give gorilla a real pain. That's all, good luck

"I'm still loving your previous gorilla’s face too - from your blue version - he looks seriously pissed!! I'd put my money on him kicking this new gorillas butt!!"
You hit my funny bone with the comment above. I laughed and laughed. Renderwhite has such a cool concept here, hope he finishes it. Too cool. I can see he is as busy as many of us (wished my day was nothing but doing my art). But, have a day job and have to feed the family-smile. Hey, Renderwhite, looking great man, looking great. Really seems like you have the meat of things done. Just looks like you have to add details. Ok, out for now. Will be back. As usual, best.

I love it!! One suggestion from me would be to take a look at your first post and see how the lighting would work on the finished piece.

Sorry you never had the time to finish this. It's still a great piece-in-progress, and even though the Challenge deadline is past, I hope you'll continue to work on it 'til it's finished, with no time constraints, and share it with up when you do. Good luck!
