03 March 2005, 08:16 AM
Arto Mikkola has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Line Art: Lineart...Turn tu right path ( lineart picture...I spent 9 hours today doing it and here it is...hope you like it :)

It's now more character based picture and I feel like it is more true to the instructions given. For better or for worse I'v ditched the crusade theme (sorry boys :(

03 March 2005, 08:34 AM
My second cg challenge so far \o/ The first one was a poor effort 'cause I entered it 4 weeks before the deadline :/ Maybe now I have time to finnish the picture ;)

03 March 2005, 09:52 AM (

This is just for make my brain working. Made some early decisions about the theme and what I want to do. Helps me a lot to have something like this worked out in advance.

03 March 2005, 01:15 PM (

Well I have the basic idea worked out and that is:

Religous society where few rule and most serve. It's somewhat related to "old" Christianity during (about) the 14th century. There are all the gimmigs to use, Inquisition etc. but I try to add some nice twist to the design and story..hopefully :)

So this pic is just to have something to work from in the furure.

03 March 2005, 01:18 PM
hey dude, nice to see u again

03 March 2005, 10:34 AM
Thanx for popping into my thread thought I would come and see what you are up to ....looking forward to updates :)

03 March 2005, 11:29 AM
Hey,that's great the way you work things out!!!Looking forward o see how youll work this out!!!Good luck and have fun:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 12:16 PM (

this is possible the main character. Maybe I try to make him a bit older...I'm not really sure if inquisitor is supposed to be this young...well maybe he ends up being the servant..dunno yet :)

03 March 2005, 12:33 PM
i like this concept. maybe it would be a good idea to uncover his face and make it determined or cold or maybe something like that. and maybe a black beard...

03 March 2005, 12:49 PM
the inquisitor looks cool..and makes me remember Jordans, wheel of time...the whitecloak inquisitors

it would be interesting to see how u script your entire concept out..looking forward to teh main concept sketch,

03 March 2005, 01:53 PM
Hi there, nice concept, the inquisitor looks great! He doesn't look really young to me.

Are you going for some classic versus cyberpunk aproach? It seems to me he's wearing a sort of 'Akira' style leather jacket, I think that's very cool:thumbsup:

Keep em coming!

03 March 2005, 02:02 PM
nice work so far..good luck :)

03 March 2005, 03:58 PM (

this is some exploration about how the inquisitor hould look (like the archetype of inquisitor). I'm not sure if I use something like this to the final image...I need to do more these kinda things. And by the way, I found that "twist" that I needed for the picture...maybe sometime soon I reveal it ;) *drumroll*

03 March 2005, 04:05 PM
that looks really cool , and yea show us more!

03 March 2005, 04:45 PM
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! I like cardinal. Not so much the inquisitor.

03 March 2005, 04:47 PM
damn, those are sum great colours, and nice face.

good luck!!

03 March 2005, 04:53 PM
Hrrmmrmrmrmr, you've really pondered alot on this theme haven't you? I mean that schematic looks cool!
*holds a upsidedownturned cross against the inquisitor* haha! you can't get me! :scream:

03 March 2005, 06:20 PM
yeah the inquisitor is bit too plain gamehero type of character. I think I keep the cardinal cause he's more wickid (if that can be said about a "holyman" ;) and it suits for the final theme better

and in a weird way my final images theme could be described with "Nobody expects the spanish inquisition" phraze ;)

03 March 2005, 07:49 AM
Hi ElFuego,

Cool concept and nice head design for your inquisitor.
Looking forward to see more.

buena suerte,:)

03 March 2005, 07:56 AM
Good luck to another finnish guy!
Youre really planning it all out. Me well im not really into planning stuff.

03 March 2005, 08:16 AM
nice head sketches, love to see next progress, keep it up

03 March 2005, 11:18 AM
Hi there....thanks for dropping by. The ultimate angel?...well, as no angels has been created by my hand ever, I could sure need some inspiration. Subscribing...:)

Btw, that concept of the inquisitor looks pretty damn cool. Wether or not itīs fitable for this, I donīt know, but you sure are a heck of a drawer.

Good luck in here

03 March 2005, 11:23 AM
I like your style of drawing particulary the face of inquisitor. I wait the suite of the concept, good work:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 05:15 PM
Wow, this concept sketches are so cool, for now I'll just lay back and enjoy the show!

03 March 2005, 05:58 PM
Good to see you back! You left us wanting for more last time :bounce:. The skectches look good, I'll have to wait for new updates to come up with comments, cause much of what i think has already been said. Good luck!

03 March 2005, 06:03 PM
good style man^^

03 March 2005, 11:13 AM
thanks for yo' comments :)

Falcor_ : I'v just recently discovered the true beaty of planning....saves you a lot of work in a long run ;)

Kragh: Thanks :) I'v never drawn an angel before either =) but how hard can it be...just draw a beautiful "humanoid" and put couple of dove wings on his back :D Well I'v realized it isn't that easy actually. It's all about the mood of an angel. Sad but noble, Strong but fragile...uh...lot's of adjectives to represent...damn ;)

MDN67: Concept is coming...hardest part is to draw the whole picture that's inside my head =]

GaeasHerald: Glad to see you too :) GSO was a blast! shame that I missed the deadline by miles, I'll do better this time x)

ogar555: hehe :)

Squibbit: I try my best :P

ninox & eclipson & coCoKNIght & neozoom & noob!: thanks :)

03 March 2005, 09:54 PM
hey artistry there!:) the concept....hmm when u reveal the twist it cirtainly will be a blast.. ! us some more :scream: !

03 March 2005, 07:20 PM (

Just started the line drawing with the characters after few days of sketching on paper (I might scan those later and post them here). Hopefully the final linedrawing is ready sometime next week so I can begin my favourite task...the rendering of light! \o/ =)

And now the twist is there for you to see :) I know it's a bit too cliche (the church used faith for their own purposes in 1400th century and maybe they do still) And the inquisitor theme is also somewhat "ditched".

03 March 2005, 10:16 PM
I find ur style crazy ! :bounce:

its hand drawing or it done in painter??

continu like that dude :applause:

03 March 2005, 06:27 AM
This is looking brilliant.. good job..the inquisiitor ditched makes it a more real life far as it can be....:)

one suggestion..would it be better to to have the preist not facing the veiwer..makes it look like they are posing for the camera.. maybe..or if the pose remains the same.. create a pulpit..and in the blurry forefront..the masses listening to him preach...?

03 March 2005, 09:35 AM
Well, the inquisitor idea was really good, but i must admit... i like this one better!
I don't think i would've come up with this, but if I did, it would be the opposite to what you've done (the angel being the master)... i think my mind is a bit locked or limited...
I like the inking you've done sofar, and, any plans on the bg yet?

03 March 2005, 09:38 AM
its good to see your thought process here:D i am enjoying this:D gluck!

03 March 2005, 03:29 PM
dominikmk: Thanks :) It's made in photoshop but I will take it to painter when I start coloring it (painter is superior in it).

omengeorge. Yeah I know the problem with that priest facing the camera...I'll see what I can do about it :) The main idea behind this is as follows:

"the Year is 1487, Corruption rules the catholic church and Cardinals use religion as a tool to make them more wealthy and more powerful."

main idea is to represent this era and bring fantazy elements to boost the effect. The church is now a "freakshow" with angels and other holy creatures on display to be used as a tool to rule nations. In this picture a cardinal is dragging an arcangel inside the church and the angel is strugling agains but at the same time crying (Angels like to cry when humans act this cruel way ;)

I hope you got the idea 'cause I find it hard to find the right words in english :)

ogar555: Thanks :) I thought about putting the angel as master in my first drafts but it didn't work...somehow I like it this way...this represent the humans true nature more clearly) And bg is coming after I get those poses ready...its already scethed out with those character in it but its such a mess that I will not post it here :)

T-lapia: thanks :] I like to think things thru even if (at this time of year) my brain capacity is running low :) I need a vacation!! :D

someone from some warm place: please take a burnout concept artist to live in your house for 2 weeks (I'll pay the drinks)
If your interested /msg ElFuego :D :D

03 March 2005, 03:39 PM
Really nice work Arto. I love the head study. You may want to crop into this latest image: I don't think you need to show all of the wing on the right side. Consider rotating the inquisitor's face slightly to the right to break-up the stong vertical. That's a nit-pick. This is some good stuff starting here. Good Luck

03 March 2005, 03:45 PM
Sideache: thanks :) about the cropping image thing the enviroment that I add later will balance the composition so it doesn't need cropping. those are just the characters without bg :)

04 April 2005, 07:17 PM (

New pose study. A new concept too. The angel is more "war angel" but he is still unwillingly in to this. The priest is also a bit different :)

04 April 2005, 02:37 PM (

Ok, another one...this is the final composition. Well maybe I make it a landscape but anyway :) This is comp/color study but I make a official color WIP later. After I get everything in place.

The crusade theme is also somewhat different from the past inquisition theme cause this one works the best as an whole image. But throw in some improvement succestions and I see what I can do.

You can't see it clearly from this image but the angel is chained to serve the powerseekers and therefore there is somekind of "subidea" of using religion as an excuse to conquer and rule.

04 April 2005, 05:13 PM
Fantastic coloring and perspective on this. I dont have much more to add, so I'll just keep watch on it.
one thing though. The shadows dont look appropriate for where the light source is, you might try rotating them upwards just a little.

04 April 2005, 05:26 PM
Hey.. Looks good in the thumbnail
Good luck everything is set for good picture.

If id be a master id never pull somebody behind me in chains and give him a spear, but that is his choice.

Just remember it is sometimes harder to add stuff you didnt plan in the concept right on. So be sure youre concept is strong as possible before going on, but there is 1 month time left. Hope it is enough for you :)

04 April 2005, 07:22 PM
I like the most recent composition. It has a nice perspective to it.

04 April 2005, 11:25 PM
hi Arto!...the latest one is my has the emotion and very dynamically in motion!...hey this will be really fantastic!

04 April 2005, 11:33 PM
Hi ElFuego,

I just wanted to say that your latest update looks absolutely great to me! I really like what you have accomplished there. That mask on masters face gives really sci-fi look to the picture..well I am not sure sci-fi is really a good word to that impression it gives to me, but's not from this least not right now...hmm I'd better stop finding right words here :)

Anyway, you really give me inspiration and maybe I'll take part to this challenge or the next one?!

Good luck with your painting!

Juha Kinnunen

04 April 2005, 11:47 AM
Hiya again Arto,

Wow the latest image compaired to the image before is a vast improvment and so dramatic, potentual masterpiece :applause:

04 April 2005, 01:00 AM
Excellent! I love the composition. It will be a lot of fun to see how you paint the light comming through the angels wings. Can't wait!

04 April 2005, 09:50 AM
What if...what if ...what if he was holding a glowing cross and then the angel had a glowing cross around his neck signifying the control aspect of the Master/Servent !!

Anyways nice work cant wait to see the end results !!

04 April 2005, 09:58 AM

i am absolutely loving this comp :)

keep going!

04 April 2005, 03:50 PM (

Another comp. And another way to aproach the theme. Kinda like this one but I think I'll do the one before this...the crusade theme :)

04 April 2005, 10:42 PM
WAHAHAH! Man oh man... i'm really happy i'm not you! haha... 'cause i would never been able to decide which of the concepts you've done to use in the final composition... They're all good... hell... i would have a mental breakdown trying to decide.. so, can't really say i think one is greatly superior to another!
but, dang... once again i wish i had your sketching skills...! :D
aah, well... keep it up!
ei saa peittaa... ( the little finnish i know, written on the radiators around the house! )

04 April 2005, 01:27 AM
I think the previous one is better, cause you can see the humiliation of the servant and therefore it has more strength. I personally would change the pose, have him crawling to accentuate this. Keep it up :)

04 April 2005, 01:56 AM
I vote for the "Crusader" concept, mostly because it's the most powerful and dynamic composition you've concocted so far. However, it also occurred to me that if you actually backlit them at the angle you currently have the sun in, then both of their faces will be shadowed in a great theme-emphasizing way.

04 April 2005, 10:31 AM
Uh thanks for your comments :)

... I feel like I have to focus more to the characters than in the crusade pic :( I'm really torn apart to make the decision. So I'v came up with a concept that cant fail! I make both and then decide :D I hope I have enough time. Oh and the Angel in this latest pic reminds the pries "who is the true master" :) (so tables have turned) I make it a bit comedic also and iconic so it just presents these two chareacters and nothing else.

Damn this challenge :D

04 April 2005, 05:15 PM ( lineart picture...I spent 9 hours today doing it and here it is...hope you like it :)

It's now more character based picture and I feel like it is more true to the instructions given. For better or for worse I'v ditched the crusade theme (sorry boys :(

04 April 2005, 08:46 AM
I really like the latest version of your lineart, look forward to seeing it colored!

I also like his new hairstyle, looking good.

04 April 2005, 08:48 AM

04 April 2005, 03:04 PM
And that brings a question to my mind...

Where are all the updates!? :wip: Come on! We need atleast one finnish quy to complete 2D challenge.. Im kinda bored to be strugling with places 500-700 hundred. So good luck to you!

04 April 2005, 11:14 PM
