Latest Update: Concept Sketch: Better (

This is what I was going for in the original one. Its much easier to create rock working negatively than positively.

These are early figure studies I did last night to flesh out the pose of the alchemist. I knew I wanted one fist high above, simulating him pushing the rock out of the earth. I feel the tucked head adds more power to his lifting fist. After a few sketches I think that besides tucking his head, when he looks away from his fist it adds more impied power to his motion as well. I don\\\\\\\'t think I captured this until #4 in page 2. I find his legs are also critical to the motion, again I don\\\\\\\'t wasn\\\\\\\'t satisfied until #4. Some of the early sketches have an elongated raised arm, but I don\\\\\\\'t think I\\\\\\\'ll do any extreme perspective. I\\\\\\\'m not sure if this will be the final perspective of the figure, but this will definitely be his pose.

I\\\\\\\'ve also considered having his far arm raised instead; this would open him up to us for more facial detail, and might suit the composition better as teh exploding rock will be behind him and I think his arm will flow well with te rock motion. Although I\\\\\\\'m pleased with the feeling in #4 I\\\\\\\'m goign to play with that arm swap and see what I come up with.

I agree #4 has the best physical presence, but when I look at #3, there's something really cool about the pose. Whether intentional or not, he kinda looks like he's looking back over his right shoulder, like something is approaching, which I think I like even more than him looking down at his clenched fist. Plus I've always liked that view of the head (head extremely turned away from viewer while body faces viewer). Nice figure studies.

A sketch of trying to reverse the position of the figure (unsuccessfully) and a small thumbnail of the composition.

Some rough ideas of how the rock should come out of the earth.

A sketch to flesh out textiles. I like the idea of his right arm pulling his coat to shield his face.

This is looking interesting. Not 100% on the whole concept of where you're going with this but you drawing is looking good. Can't wait to see more so I can get a better idea.

I figure I better get some lava burst studies under my belt before I try to do the final. Here's my first. Its evident this will probably turn into the most time consuming aspect. Getting the splattering is a little tricky. I did this over lunch sans a tablet, so i'm hoping that helps in the next.

Fleshing out the composition and trying to get started on a line drawing. The angle of the jutting rocks is tricky.
