Goro Fujita has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: The Hunt (

OK one last update. A friend of mine mentioned that the trol seems to have only four fingers (left hand). I fixed that ;)

The Background:
In a land before time only the greatest hunters can ride a trol. Therefore they have to challenge a trol to be able to rule over the creature. In a fierce fight the Master cut of the trols horns and gained the creatures respect.
It's the first hunt together. As they walk through the coppice they descry a couple of deers in a clearing. The Hunter gives the command to attack the deers, pulls the reins and picks up a spear out of the quiver. The trol obeys his masters command and starts to run.
The ground terembles under the heavy steps of the trol and the deers are fleeing in different directions trying to escape the danger. The master picked one fine deer and commands the trol to go after it. The deer is fast but trol is faster. He easily caches up with the deer. The hunter prepares for his throw. Suddenly a rabbit jumps out of coppice and distracts the trol.
The Trol tries to follow the white Rabbit but the Master pulls the reins and screams: "THE DEER YOU FOOL! GO FOR THE DEER!"

Again thnx for your support!

03 March 2005, 12:08 AM
That's what I am talkin about! Woot!

03 March 2005, 12:12 AM
Good luck Goro!

I'll bet you'll do fine, I saw your tutorials over int DSG, they were very helpful. Thanks for that.

03 March 2005, 01:18 AM
The master has arrived! Viel Erfolg!

03 March 2005, 10:05 PM
I just found this thread and it made my day. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Good luck, Goro!

03 March 2005, 11:16 PM (

Ok here I am....
I had a image in my head today. A boy sitting on the shoulder of a giant bot walking through a forest. The little boy is showing his servant the beauty of nature :)

03 March 2005, 11:18 PM
Wow thnx guys for the warm welcome! I'm highly motivated now!
thank you!!

03 March 2005, 11:35 PM
They seem very cute but may I ask why you have chosen a scene very familiar with the examples they gave at the beginning? (I mean the INSPIRATION page examples.)

As I examined your previous work, I can say that you can produce much more original art. You seem you have the capacity.

03 March 2005, 11:46 PM
Hi Goro!
I was wondering how long it'd take you to join up! Have fun here and I'm looking forward to seeing your stuff.
Also, I agree with the poster above. That looks just like a scene from 'Iron Giant'. Brad Bird will be happy that you find his work so inspirational though :)

03 March 2005, 11:52 PM
I love your origional concept... what kid didn't dream about having their own giant robot! I just wanted to post these images from Brad Bird's "The Iron Giant", in case you hadn't seen them... since the concept is relatively simmilar...

03 March 2005, 11:54 PM
hmm that's sad :(

I intetnionally didn't look at the inspiration page and I don't even know Iron Giant.
Damn it....When I read the title of the challenge I wanted to include a bot
So this image came into my mind...but if it's not original maybe I should develop another

Thnx for your feedback guys!

Edit: Ok just saw the images. Will rethink my concept....that looks really similar....
almost copied....

03 March 2005, 11:58 PM
hey goro, good to see you here , and don't worry i know you'll come up with
a good idea for this

03 March 2005, 12:01 AM
Hey Goro, thanks for dropping by! Don't get disheartened by the robot idea... how about a different take on it. Just a thought, but the robot could be small, and maybe leading the boy through the forest showing HIM the wonders of nature, like being a human he had to have a machine to point it out... I managed to get girls into my idea, I reckon you'll get a bot in yours! ;)

03 March 2005, 12:05 AM
You could always change it by showing that this robot is the boys master... the reverse of the childhood dream... that could be dark and interesting...

03 March 2005, 01:56 AM
Good luck. Hope you find your concept soon. Your 2d & 3d work looks great, im sure you wont disappoint us.

03 March 2005, 02:15 AM
hey nice seeing u here:)dont worry much about ideas,it can always be re generated.
good luck ~

03 March 2005, 03:19 AM
You are the 10th robot human picture, your sketches are great technically. But as far as the content, it seems like its getting played out too much. If you have the skill to outpaint all the other robot-human pieces, then go for it. Good luck to you though!!

03 March 2005, 07:23 AM (

Ok...still searching new Ideas. This one is about a Robot hiding in the forest. His human scout just got back to bring
him informations about the outside world.

03 March 2005, 08:58 AM
Hi Goro

Good to see you have entered! I love the drawings so far. It is going to be fun watching your progress!

03 March 2005, 05:01 PM
hey goro,
nice to see you entered the 2d challenge. I'm sure you'll come up with some original idea. and the one with the angel like creature is a good start. keep going.
I'll keep this thread bookmarked.

03 March 2005, 05:02 PM
looking great, but doesn't there need to be a human in there sumwhere??

03 March 2005, 05:30 PM
I like the new spin, where the robot is the master (is that correct?). I guess you might have to make your scout fairy creature human in order to conform to the rules, but in any case I think you came up with a nice solution to separate your concept from the other child+robot examples.

Good luck!

03 March 2005, 05:49 PM
Hey Goro, good to have you on board! Looking forward to seeing more

03 March 2005, 07:40 PM
thnx guys! The fairy like creature suposed to be a human hehe but I can see that
it is not clear. Well still looking for some ideas.

03 March 2005, 07:43 PM (

doodled around and made a coloring test.

03 March 2005, 08:17 PM
nice concept really inspired^^

03 March 2005, 08:22 PM
i like the analogous colour scheme you've chosen. really brings the image to life. good work

03 March 2005, 08:52 PM
Wow, original.

The little vamp looks like a nice and wicked girl! Good twist.

I think the way you put them in the forest lighting and staging considered is very nice!

03 March 2005, 08:59 PM
thnx for your feedback guys do you think it's believable that the girl is a flying human?
Just thinking of another concept. Finding ideas is not so easy... :banghead:

03 March 2005, 09:02 PM
thnx for your feedback guys do you think it's believable that the girl is a flying human?

i think u'd get away with it,looking great btw!

03 March 2005, 09:03 PM (

Ok here is another concept I had in my head. The composition lags I thing. The dragon should be lifted a bit.

Tell me what you think.
More to come...

03 March 2005, 09:10 PM
sympathic sketche man^^

can't wait to see more...
BTW the dragon and the style of the scene can be much more better...
try to mprove this ;)

03 March 2005, 09:11 PM
looks amazing man!!

03 March 2005, 09:11 PM
very good "japanese concept", i wait the next pic:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 09:26 PM
I agree with MN, it reminds me of 'Spirited away'. I really like the concept but I agree with you, the dragon's pose could be changed somewhat. Maybe have his back arching over to the right hand side, to balance out the water sprays on the bottom left. Good stuff so far! The DSG guys are doing us proud here :)

03 March 2005, 11:13 PM
Hey there Goro! I like this last sketch. You could get a very nice dramatic artwork if you decide to develop it.

03 March 2005, 11:44 PM
wow, the concept skecth from your last update its tremendous!!! got loads of power, you should go for it...

03 March 2005, 12:17 AM
Like you said the Dragon could be a little higher. I personnally think that it has the two coils too close together. It just looks weird.

Should be interesting though, if you decide to use this idea. I wonder what you'll come up with next.

03 March 2005, 12:43 AM
Hi, Goro!

Love your dragon idea, but I would have the dragon's body somehow waving behind the man instead of just coiling above him - make it more "random", I guess.

Good luck!

03 March 2005, 12:53 AM
*Lung Dragon fan*

I like the idea. Make the dragon's head a bit smaller and the end of the body thinner. Maybe enlarging the format and playing more with the "negative space". If this ends up as a huge piece please post close up of the human's face!

03 March 2005, 03:24 PM
thnx for your feedback guys do you think it's believable that the girl is a flying human?
Just thinking of another concept. Finding ideas is not so easy... :banghead:

Not sure if you're still considering this concept, but I was pretty sure the human character had to be strictly homo sapien. What if the robot had designed an apparatus that allowed his human scout to fly?

As for the dragon concept, it's also got potential. I like the crashing waves. It might be more dramatic if the picture had a vertical orientation and the dragon were soaring upward. Was the dragon conjured from thin air or has the wizard tamed a live dragon?

03 March 2005, 03:29 PM
i read from somewhere that real dragons are no less than 8 miles
long and that they have no thinckness

and yea it would probably look better if you lifted the dragon a bit

03 March 2005, 03:42 PM
I agree about the composition thing, seems like good concept this far though. Maybe you could try to change the camera angle a bit or something to fix the composition? Go for more depth, too.

Keep working!

03 March 2005, 03:53 PM
at least he isn't a chick : D
joking aside, I'd think the WOAH impact of something like this would be better conveyed if the camera was placed really low, just infront of the guy, looking up. all dramaticlike. Water all aroung, the dragon high up in the air, the japanese guy with his arms up, yelling something amusingly anime : D

03 March 2005, 04:00 PM
Cool Sketch Goro! I hope you develop it to be your final artwork. Keep going!

03 March 2005, 04:25 PM
i read from somewhere that real dragons are no less than 8 miles
long and that they have no thinckness

and yea it would probably look better if you lifted the dragon a bit

lol! I've got a children's book at home called "Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like". I'll let you know if that's true or not. ;)

03 March 2005, 11:50 PM
The fairy and the robot is interesting.

Are you determined to use a robot??

The Dragon does not pull at me in any way.

So far so good Keep going, I want to see wahat else you come up with

03 March 2005, 11:51 PM
Hey Goro, nice to see you in the challenge!
Good luck!

I like your last sketch, you should develop it further.

03 March 2005, 12:02 AM
Hi Goro!!Nice sketches(wow,I'm I original by saying that:D )Anyway I read in your first post's you didnt' see "The Iron Giant"???Hé ,you gotta see that one,I think it's a great movie!!!try it,really!!!
For your last sketch, indeed lift the dragon abit, and it could be really nice that pic with upflying water and so,and so!!
Good luck and especialy loads of fun Goro!!!

04 April 2005, 03:06 PM
It's been a while! You're not dropping out are you? I'm just getting started, I would enjoy your work to study it. And it's really beautiful.

04 April 2005, 04:16 PM
thnx for your suggestions guys!

jimBoekestein I'm still alive but I had a lot of things to do in the last moving out of my apartment and stuff....and now I'm sick so I'm lying in bed all day....

But updates are coming!

04 April 2005, 04:24 PM
Loving the ideas so far, keep it up and goodluck goro.

04 April 2005, 10:42 PM
Get wel soon!!!:)

04 April 2005, 10:48 PM
Maybe if the dragon spiraled a little looser and took up more of the area? Perhaps a figure 8/eternity symbol kinda thing...

04 April 2005, 10:50 PM
Great mood and atmosphere you have going on. Can't wait to see the colors.

04 April 2005, 11:38 PM (

Hi guys! Didn't have much time lately and I'm still sick...but I just had to do this sketch. I think I will work on this one a bit more.
The Guy on top of the troll is hunting deers...
The problem I see in this sketch is that the Troll has no realtion to the Human. He is just looking at the rabbit in the lower right corner without taking part in the hunt. But I like the composition so far...What I want to try next is to place another deer in the lower left corner fleeing from the two attackers.
I'll have to change the position of the Human and the head of the troll then.
They will look twards the fleeing deer.

What do you guys think?

04 April 2005, 12:15 AM
Much better The bunny is a nice touch..

04 April 2005, 12:21 AM
Looks pretty good. I like this concept. Hope to see those changes to this comp soon, and hope you feel better. Poor troll though, chasing bunnies is bad luck: hes goign to run and trip over that branch; those bunnies are evil, they plan it.

04 April 2005, 06:44 AM
wow, really cool concept, pretty dynamic characters and a very nice environment! Looking forward seeing this in color!

Dancin' Mochi
04 April 2005, 06:56 AM
Awesome sketch!
It may be also interesting if the troll is actually ignoring the master and going for the rabbit.
Can't wait to see the next sketch! Hope you'll feel better soon.

04 April 2005, 10:12 AM
thnx for your feedback guys! I'll do some update today.

Dancin'mochi Yes I was thinking about that...buts It's not clear enough.
I'll have to draw it more obvious. Maybe I'll do a version for it too.

thnx guys!

04 April 2005, 06:24 PM (

OK here is a little update. I wanted to make the relationship between the characters in the image more clear. I added a deer fleeing from the two hunters. I also edited the poses of the Human and the troll. The troll is still looking after the rabbit. That makes him a bit dump and he is kind of...more like a servant :)
I added also some reins to the troll and the master is trying to aim to hit the prey and pull the troll into the right direction at the same time.

I'm kind of satisfied with the result now. I think I'll go with this one.

what do you guys think?

04 April 2005, 06:28 PM
very cool goro ...stick to it :D

now that u have the main target, the rabbits function is clearer and its a very good composition imho

04 April 2005, 06:28 PM
i hate it cos i'm a jelous fool!!

04 April 2005, 06:50 PM
I really like this one, and think it's your best concept yet.

Just maybe make the deer in the foreground a little smaller - my eyes seems to be drawn to it a bit too much.

Great idea though, looking forward to your progress :)

04 April 2005, 08:09 PM
This one's the most dynamic I think! I like it a lot. Good depth and action in it. Also very balanced.

But there are a lot of these going around, someone controlling a beast or other person/robot. If you want to distinguish yourself you'd have to give it more of a twist maybe. Dunno though, whatever catches your eye.:)

04 April 2005, 08:29 PM
Hey Goro, I dunno, but I still like the dragon pic best.
But if you stick with this, I would loose the deers in the background or at least make them look startled. I can't help but thinking that the humanfigure on the back of the troll is too small. I think it has got something to do with the perspective and the deers in the background. The deers look huge compared to the human. Yeah, I know it's a sketch (you should see my thumnails... :scream:
I would also try to find the right momentum of the action and movements, maybe exaggerate the poses some more.
Still it's a dynamic pic, I like it, and I know you can make it good.

04 April 2005, 06:12 AM
thnx for your comments! Nemein I think the size is ok...cause if I make the deer smaller it breaks the composition. But I'll think I can cover it with the lighting.

Art2 I feel a lot better on this pic. I was too unsure about the dragon pic.
Yes you're right about the deers in the BG I'll change them. Think the bunny is also a bit
too big. I'll work on that today!

Thnx for your feedback guys!

04 April 2005, 07:36 AM
Hi Goro, nice idea!
some quick feedback: I miss some tension in the relationship between the two figures, at least - I don't register it in the sketch... looks like the servant is happy to go out for a jog with his master right now, and I think the constellation would be stronger if you suggested more tension between the figures. Also, the rider looks quite able to hunt without his servant 'mount' so there's no real dependency there, either. If he wern't so able, he'd be more reliant upon his servant... more relationship, more tension...

Whatcha think?

Emio P
04 April 2005, 07:43 AM
I saw the FAQ ,one of the master or the servant need to be a human, you better to take a look, Good Luck.

04 April 2005, 08:35 AM
cool sketch pal, look forward to ur colour progress :)

04 April 2005, 09:18 AM
i think bunny as well as deer are good.... but i agree with art2 about the size of the hunter...

u could make the deer in the bg a bit smaller ...and the hunter maybe a little bit bigger ( just about 25% ):arteest:

04 April 2005, 05:22 PM (

Ok Lineart is finished.
Thnx for you suggestions guys. I made some changes. I made the deers in the BG smaller and let them take part on the action. They are looking towards the action now. I also scaled the human a bit. And scaled down the rabbit. Now the size relations are better. Thnx for feedback!

04 April 2005, 05:25 PM
Hi David glad your stopping by! Thnx for your crits I can see what you mean.
I already finished the lineart but maybe I could do some changes while coloring.
I'll see what I can do...

04 April 2005, 10:09 PM (

Some quick coloring blockings. This was the color sheme in my head.
Maybe I should bring the master mor in the light. And still not sure about the trolls skincolor....have to experiment a bit more.

04 April 2005, 10:12 PM
Lookin Great GOROSan. I like this one a lot, there are so much you can play with the lighting and such!

04 April 2005, 10:20 PM
This is really coming along nicely.

Job well done!

04 April 2005, 10:26 PM
Hi Goro! I really liked your robot and fairy sketch, but I'm feeling this one too. This one tells much more of a story I think. A couple of things passed me by on the first look... I completely missed the fact the servant is more interested in the rabbit until I read it in one of your comments, but that could be fixed if you make the bunny smaller, I think the persepctive might just be skewing it for me. Also, the deer in the background look rather placid to say there's a bloody great troll thundering through their woods. Perhaps if they were bucking or fleeing away from the viewer, it would help them seem more panicked.

Other than that, I think it's looking good. I love he pose of the guy on the troll, his lines are so full of energy and movement, he really looks like he's ready to throw that spear for all he's worth. And the lighting is very interesting too, I've always been a fan of dappled light. Great work thus far, waiting to see how you progress this!

04 April 2005, 10:33 PM
due the the size and position of the deers to the behind, they shall be standing 20-30 meters away from the giant if my calculation is not wrong.
and also the giant seems to be comnig from the direction where the deers stand. or i felt like it cuz of the footpath the giant currently stands on.
simply i would just gonna remind "why are the deers standing and watching a giant with a hunter on top 30 meters away, instead of running" :)
it would give more motion to the image too i think

04 April 2005, 10:52 PM
Ooh...goro....The hunt is on...and it's looking real cool. .....Nice scope and dramatic that big boy,the whole scene is alive, and fun to see, real nice execution too......I'll be looking for more as you go along....well done.

04 April 2005, 11:05 PM
XIAsan arigatou!

Thnx for your suggestion. I'll change the poses of the deers in the BG.
They will be in panic! ;)

hmm ok I made the rabbit already smaller..should I scale it down even more?

and thnx Paul and Virtuoso!

04 April 2005, 11:14 PM
That's some awesome fast colouring. Glad I'm following this, gonna learn a lot!!!

Looks to me that where the prey is there could be a bit more light. Could also be my monitor, or just me.

edit:just seems that way, maybe with more detail.

04 April 2005, 01:45 AM
great going goro, some nice color scheme u picked~cant wait to see the update.

04 April 2005, 01:52 AM
Hey nice creature! I think the placement of the deer makes it look like a giant deer. Can you add a big pocket of light where the two main characters are? I think that'll make it clearer.

04 April 2005, 04:49 PM (

Little update. I've changed the color sheme to much more warmer colors and I tried to be not so monochrome. I'll paint the fleeing deers in the background later.
I changed the left hand of the troll. Now I think it's more obvious that he is heading for the rabbit.
I Changed also a lot in the background to improve the composition.

Tell me what you think.

04 April 2005, 04:53 PM

First time i have seen this... excellent colour.. I think that yes it is obvious that he is going for the rabbit (love the comedy element by the way) but only cos you told me a rabbit was there.... need to show some greateer attention to the rabbit... really bring him (or her, lets not be sexist) out of the canvas. nice job...!

04 April 2005, 04:53 PM
In shadow too much i thinks that rabbit.

04 April 2005, 04:56 PM
thnx Jim I think I'll lighten up the whole image a bit..

thns ms@zx here you go:)

Can see your point Dibital Bobert. Still didn't touch the troll that much.
He is too dark indeed. The values are not right yet. I'll work on that.
Thnx for crit!

A closeup of the deer (wip)

04 April 2005, 04:57 PM
Hmmm I know that being in a fairly shadowed area it's hard to do - but I'd like to see some more lights in here, otherwise I fear it may turn out a bit unbalanced visually. The concept is wonderful, I'm really into that, I just don't want to think we're missing anything in it due to all of those lower value tones.

Still, this rocks for sure! :scream:

EDIT: This written before you stated you were going to! bah beat me to it ;) lol

04 April 2005, 05:10 PM
This is going to be a really great piece! I love the colour scheme and the dense haze in the background. Sahweet.

04 April 2005, 05:49 PM
Very cool the deer.

04 April 2005, 06:07 PM
Hi Goro!

Your style is recognizable from miles and I mean quality rendering by that! The colors are truly great, I have a little wierd feeling about the deer being realistic and the troll being (well not exactly cartoony but somehow in a different style than the deer...and the two front legs of the deer feel a bit funny, but maybe I haven't seen a deer lately so it's just me...

really loving where this is going!

check you later

04 April 2005, 06:07 PM
Nicely done, the colours are very fitting. Not too sure what's going on yet but it's shaping up well.

04 April 2005, 06:09 PM
It's looking very nice. Yeah, I think it's obvious now that he's more interested in the rabbit.

04 April 2005, 06:13 PM
Nice concept, Goro! :bounce: Forest looks beautiful.

Only thing that bothers me is the troll's legs. Since is thighs are so short it's more difficult to read which way he's running. Also, his human rider probably chose him because he can get places in a hurry, so a long stride would be in his best interest.

I'm loving the expression on the troll's face. Looks like, "I wanna chase da bunny!"
Rider should probably tug the reigns to his left to make the troll move right to follow the stag. Only other thing I'd suggest is to emphasize the shoulder of the deer a bit more. It looks like the front leg starts near the stag's belly.

Hope you're feeling better. Great to see you back in the fray!

04 April 2005, 07:04 PM
Yrindale hehe np!

Thnx jim chris and paul!

Adamos I know exactly what you mean. I still didn't touch the troll that much...
just blocked in the colors....maybe he will look more realistic when I go into details.
But I do have worries about this ;)

Baron thnx, yes still a lot of work to do....

Thnx soup for the feedback. I'll check that with the legs (for both troll and deer) :)

Thnx for feedback guys!

04 April 2005, 10:00 PM
Man, I just love the way you do the light in your paintings!
And great action scene.

*quietly sits waiting for more*

04 April 2005, 10:16 PM
wow! your style is very impressing! great use of light and color... the composition is excellent.. but the concept is a little bit too cruel for me.. the poor deer!! (<--i´m a vegetarian...)

hmm.. i have a little problem with the one feet that´s in the air... but i´m sure the matter is in the right hands.. :) keep up the good work!! i´ll watch this one..

04 April 2005, 10:38 PM
Hey there, great forest! really well painted. No crits sorry... run bambi run!!

04 April 2005, 10:39 PM
nice colors goro .... i really like your style

my only little crit would be the deer .... it looks very content and sure about getting away :D

maybe u could change the eyes a little bit or something in the face that makes it more ...errm... in panic.

but so far this is one of my favorite entrys ... ill watch and learn master .

04 April 2005, 11:28 PM (

Here is another update. I made the overall lighting brighter. Since some of you guys gave some crits about the legs...I decided to replace them with a new pair :)
I'm pretty satisfied with the new pose. It looks more dynamic I think. Now the trol looks bigger than before.
I added also some birds as size reference for the Master. Not sure if it works...but I think they support the composition.
I also corrected the shoulderarea of the deer. hmmm what else...some small refinements.

more to come....

04 April 2005, 11:31 PM
Oh. My. God.

Seriously brilliant, Goro! I love watching the whole progress, but man, that picture kicks arse.

04 April 2005, 11:31 PM
thnx SoniaNotRed, Jezzarts

dunkelgold thnx. and feet corrected:)
I used to live in Berlin...till last week btw:)

Yes right! I'll see what I can do! thnx for the suggestion.

Just saw your post Linda! Thnx a lot! Glad you like it.

04 April 2005, 11:42 PM
That is looking pretty damn good.

Your lighting is awsome:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 02:59 AM
Wow! What is there? Composition, color, design, all just fit really great together! Really nice job! :)

04 April 2005, 03:06 AM
This new twist on the concept and color comp is really beautiful. You definately have skill. Can't wait to watch your progress.

04 April 2005, 03:10 AM
wonderful work .. the new colors make this pop ... new legs are way better and i think the birds work too

it is definitely kickin

04 April 2005, 07:04 AM
That's awesome! Bambi and Thumper don't even stand a chance!

Actually, one of the things I like most about this one (especially in comparison to the rest of my favorites) is the sense of action, of movement. Most of these images are pretty static but this one sets itself apart in that way. I look forward to seeing how you handle the lighting to help that sense become stronger.

04 April 2005, 10:28 AM
Looking good there Goro! Great improvement on the legs.

04 April 2005, 11:06 AM
Thnx guys! I'll see if I can do some update today

04 April 2005, 11:19 AM
allright, now you're talkin , Goro !
that pic looks so fine, the way
you've portrayed the action is excellent :bounce:

04 April 2005, 12:03 PM
hehe, it is great that we all have thumbnails now, that way i can spot a great work from a mile! and this, my friend, is a true masterpiece:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 05:51 PM
Hey it rocks with the new lighting!

This one is a serious contender Goro.

04 April 2005, 11:22 PM
thnx everyone!

Well I didn't find time to work on it today. :banghead:

A friend of mine made the suggestion to make the trols arms thicker cause he
has huge legs now. I think I follow his suggestion and I'll give him some
powerful biceps hehe. It's better for the balance.

04 April 2005, 11:25 PM
Unfair! How can this picture be this good!?! Errrr....Darn...Must work harder...LOL anyway as everyone keeps telling you allready the composition color, lightening, action, everything is just really nice. And thats what makes me so mad ! ARRRRRRGGG:shrug:

04 April 2005, 11:41 PM
I like the contrast of the thin arms and thick hands ... first thing that came to my mind was that he is the perfect instrument for hunting ...grabbing little bunnies that is :D

04 April 2005, 01:26 AM
Hi Goro!

WOW!!! Incredible light!!!

Good luck!

04 April 2005, 02:02 AM

*wipes chin*

*gets down on knees and bows in proper obescience*

Yeah, so this is just fan-farking-tabulous. I mean, aside from all the deliciousness of execution, that has got to be THE way to get around the forest at speed!

04 April 2005, 02:35 AM
the scene looks good. i like the background alot. the deer however, looks too calm and still. lighten up its hind leg so you can see it better and add 'motion' to the rest of it esp. head and neck. good paintings!

04 April 2005, 03:40 AM
I love the picture! The colors in the background are wonderful and the idea is good! One thing I noticed that may help would be to have the deer overlapping the ogre/giant, then it wouldn't seem like they are on the same gound plain because of the large size that they are both.

04 April 2005, 06:27 AM
Many thnx guys!

Vahn thnx for your coment I'll try the fat arms...on a extra layer:)

Thnx for the crits. I'll definetly edit the deer. I was planning to change the mouth
area and the eye but now maybe I'll also change the position of the head. I'll see what
I can do. Deer needs definetly more dynamic aspects.

Thnx I'll check that with the overlapping. But I think it will break the composition.
Well at least I can try. Thnx for feedback!

04 April 2005, 07:51 AM
great environment! I like the environmental fog+depth+color play, monochrome yet complicated.
Goodwerk!

04 April 2005, 07:53 AM
I can't beleive I haven't subscribed to this thread yet! Great work Goro.

04 April 2005, 08:06 AM
I love the ricjness in the palette you've chosen, makes the scene seem much more romantic.(even though he's hunting and killing Bambi's mother!:))

Great stuff!

04 April 2005, 08:31 AM
your light is very nice. i love it:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 08:36 AM
excellent mood I like the difference between the foreground and the background.

I think the deer doesn't seem to running away, it should look frightened in a way, and running to save his life... But I don't have any idea on how you can do it...

04 April 2005, 09:51 AM
 GREAT COLOURS...

04 April 2005, 09:21 PM (

Those deers in the background drove me crazy...they are so tiny but it was sooo hard to find the right poses. But I think they look ok now.

I worked a bit on the legs of the Trol.
I also tried to give the deer in the foreground a frightened expression...but
It's really difficult...I tired to open the mouth and stick out the tongue..but that looks strange somehow...deers rarely open the mouth while running. So I tweaked the eye a bit. Now it looks at least more alive. The jumping angle is a little bit different now. The rear legs are rotated counter clockwise. Now the deer has more speed and the whole scene is a bit more dynamic.

I refined the pose of the Trol and edited the shape of the big tree on the right to break the parallelity between the trols arm and the tree.
And I made the arms of the trols a bit thicker. I like it better this way.

Tell me what you think!

04 April 2005, 09:28 PM
deer always look scared. If u look at it that way. it's
really in the situation and that you portrayed well.

also, the little work you did for the eye also helped a bit

04 April 2005, 10:21 PM (

this is just a little joke m8 ...i was courious myself how to get more panic in the expression :D

urs is better now .... i have 3 other suggestions that might help :

1) move the highlight in the eye to the right. since u got more or less diffuse light there in the woods, the position shouldnt matter.

2) play with the shape of the eye, maybe make it a little bigger.... since ur troll isnt too realistic why should the deer be ?

3) make the ears face backwards to the threat ... deer rely on their ears more than eyes and this could help a little bit

the arms are very good now... u were right :D

04 April 2005, 10:32 PM
nice one vahn

04 April 2005, 10:36 PM
thnx squibbit

hehe thnx for the suggestion Vahn

I was editing the eye area for about an hour....trying to get a better result
If I make it bigger it looks unnatural. I played also with the hightlight. It was placed in
almost every face of the eyeball. I also changed the angles of the eyelids. But I couldn't get
a better result...deers show no emotion when they are hunted....they seem to be relaxed
only the movements are fast....well but thnx anyways!

04 April 2005, 11:02 PM
this is one cool scene your doing! lots going on, and it all looks so great.

04 April 2005, 11:38 PM
Wow, Goro... this has come on leaps and bounds (no pun intended) since I looked last. The changes you've made just make the piece much more dynamic and exciting. The deer in th background are cock on now, and its not changed the flow of lines either, which is nice. And the interaction between rabbit and trol is so much more clear now you've put that vivid highlight on the rabbit... master stroke of genius. Your handling of light and depth is just stunning, it make the picture wonderfully authentic. And the big eye on the deer certainy makes it look more panicked, but a tad too daft for this piece. Have you tried looking at any pictures of deer's relatives, to see if they give any clues on how to make your head deer more panicked? Thinking primarily of gazelle and iboks etc being hunted by lions or hyenas. Other than that which you already know, no crit. Looking amazing!

04 April 2005, 12:22 AM
I think it maybe needs a little more disturbance around the feet of the troll-thing. All that forest and no leaves or twigs and things getting flown around.

This may be your plan... there's too many posts for me to narrow your goal down!:)

04 April 2005, 01:17 AM
I really like emotion and color of your image ! but I think I a little bit confuse about distant between foreground deer and hunter behind , now I don't know how big the hunter are compare to the deer ,
good luck ,
ps . I really like your video painting tutorial! great stuff

04 April 2005, 01:29 AM
I love your style, and was very impressed by your SotD's back when those first started out.

The light in this is great, I think you picked a great color pallette, and the further you get on this, the more it shows. However, there's some things I'd change in the composition.

The warrior riding the troll, as well as all the deer have a whole lot of motion, but the troll himself really just seems to be strolling along, without any real sense of a chase occuring. Both the prey and the spearman himself follow what's close to a 45 degree line cutting across the page, and if you carried that sense of motion down to the troll, it would really make the whole thing really kenetic. I really want to see that troll bank around the turn like he's running at top speed, really giving him the same line of motion as the spear bearer.

Also, do something interesting with he arms, right now they're just sort of chilling out there. Get them moving around some more, maybe he's reaching at the deer with one, or he's pumping his arms furiously in a mad dash for food. Same goes for the face, give him some expression that really catches the eye, or a look of curiousity as he glances at that bunny rabbit.

I don't know about the square format, as it leads to really static, solid compositions. If you wanted to give the whole thing more speed, I'd make it more horizontal to really bring out the motion on that plane.

See how you feel about all this stuff - I really like your entry a lot.

04 April 2005, 04:36 AM
"Mmm, Troll want rabbit...but Master want deer...Troll torn."

04 April 2005, 07:45 AM

What a beautful painting. I just love the colors. Did it take you long to experiment with them?
I really like the atmosophere in this work, I think it's your best yet. It's so warm and yet so..original.
I especially like the deer in the background (all your hard work paid off!) and the tiny rabbit running away in the foreground. I would highlight the rabbit a bit more, give it its own little star arena...
That and I think the deer's face doesn't look quite right, if I look at it-- I think it needs more cheekbone. That and the mandible in deer are often much smaller, with a stripe coming down from the mouth, much like cows.
Beautiful colors once more. I really love them. I can't wait to see the final work. Keep it up!!

04 April 2005, 08:20 AM
this is coming together great! just a thought; how about if the troll dudes mouth was open, like hes being sidetracked easily. Think the big ginger bread man in shrek 2.

04 April 2005, 09:33 AM
Cool idea and very nice picture!
I don't really love the hunt, but the idea is really original!
And the forest is beautiful, even if for the moment it is not finished, there is already a real depth!

04 April 2005, 12:18 PM
Well done!!!. The Image have amayzing atmosphere and vitality. Nice colors and good
composition. I haven't post any coments hire up to know. How could I miss it!!! I'll follow
your thread and keep an eye for your updates! Goooood luck man! (

04 April 2005, 12:21 PM
thnx for your kind words! Yes I made looots of research on that.
But the problem is that deers, gazelles, ect. all the same thing. They are animals...
so no emotions. Even if they are chased they doesn't show fear :(

I will do that stuff when I start with the detailing. I'll try to fix the overall balance of the
painting first.

glad you like my tut! Yes the size relations seem to be odd. I'll work on that.

First of all thnx for your detailed feedback! I appreciate it.
About the trol though...not sure. He is aiming for the rabbit not for the deer. That's why
his motion is different than the spearman and the deer. You can see the spearmen
pulling on the strings trying to get the troll in the right direction.
I agree about the arms though..precisely the right arm. I'll see if I can get a better position
for that.
About the canvas format. I think that is a really good idea I'll try that.
THnx a bunch!

the coloring didn't take me too's more the composition and the poses
that's the hardest thing I have to deal with...
Thnx for your crits. I'll check the face of the deer again.

Yes I already tried to open the mouth....couldn't paint it right until now. I'll give it another
try. But first I need the right balance in the whole painting.

thnx a lot!

04 April 2005, 12:27 PM (

OK a quick update. I changed the format of the canvas. I painted some more stuff on both sides. Now it's close to 4:3
This change gave me room to scale the
troll and the human. Now they look much bigger and the size relations are better. I think the new format makes the whole image more dynamic. Kind of happy with it.

Tell me which one you like better.

04 April 2005, 12:58 PM
the new format is very good ! nothing more to say... i love it

04 April 2005, 01:08 PM
This is looking great, Goro! Shame on me for not having seen it and commented earlier. The sense of light and color is wonderful!

I liked your composition before, but as soon as I saw the wider shot, it was like getting out of a cramped car or airplane after a long trip: Ahhhhh, space! That feels good! So yes, I really like the wider shot, it gives the peice room to breathe.

Y'know, I had no idea that the troll was chasing the rabbit 'til you pointed it out. Hmmm. I think that part of the problem is that there's a huge compositional curve in the piece rounding out the bottom right-hand corner, defined (clockwise) by the tree, the pool of light under the troll, the fallen tree-trunk, and the deer itself. Now don't get me wrong, compositionally it's great, many classical painters employ such techniques to keep the viewer's eye from "falling off the canvas" and curving right back into the scene. But it's also steering the eye away from something that story-wise is kind of important to the piece. You could consider moving the rabbit up and left and closer to the center of the piece... Not a lot, maybe, right now my eye gets attracted to that bright patch by the Troll's feet with the sunbeam hitting it. Maybe if the rabbit were there, the sunlight would help us spot it a lot sooner.

Anyhow, just an idea. Great piece, can't wait to see your further refinements! Have fun!

04 April 2005, 01:17 PM
Well I was waiting a little before reply but I can't wait now. What a great picture. The best of the challenge at this moment. Like colors, concept, well everything in fact...
Your new composition is better, more space. But I prefer the human with the old size. The fact that he was far gave me a biggest impression of speed of the creature. Now he's so near of the animal that I feel less speed. Anyway

04 April 2005, 01:21 PM
the new legs look great! and i like the new birds..
why did you move away from berlin? the summer is comming! :)

04 April 2005, 01:22 PM
The right pic has a larger view, and it is better for the comp and the hunting... -i think.

You have a niceest color mood on forest draw i ever seen! congrats!

cheers: Kornél

(sorry for my bad english)

04 April 2005, 01:39 PM
Hi there Goro! ;) Beautifull work! recommendation - why u don't try with a little white in the eye of the deer(to make him to look at the monster) - now he is a little bit non-emotional...

04 April 2005, 02:06 PM
Yo Goro...great work, man! The new format really makes the deer jump out of the frame. Beautiful colors and lighting...really looks like a summer afternoon, specially because of that haze.

04 April 2005, 02:48 PM
I think the new format is better. But there is something that’s bothering me: the deer isn’t scared and he looks like he is taking a walk in the forest.

But still love it !

04 April 2005, 04:00 PM
:wise:Kaketa has a very good point there, I've seen loads of nature documentaries about tigers, they're one of my favorites. When they attack the deer usually open theyre eyes so wide that you see some pink in the eyelids and indeed sometimes also eyewhite maybe even always, hints of ith close to the eyeball and they cock their ears, your deers ears are pointed like a deer that sees the photgrapher and is wondering what he'll do and listens for him. Get it? Bit of a long haul. Ears and eyes.
New format in combination with the bigger troll(if he actually is bigger) is indeed way more dynamic.:D A depth staging thing I guess.

04 April 2005, 05:05 PM
What you could do is have the deer pulling his head back, as if he is doing a double take, opening his eyes and mouth wide and looking at the troll out of the corner of his eye. If this stage is too far developed to change's beautiful anyway!

04 April 2005, 05:59 PM (

puhhh kind of tired now. I changed the pose of the trol and the master. The other pose of the trol was too static as some of you said. Think it's better now.
I also worked a bit on the background. Especially the lower left corner.
I made the eye white of the deer bigger...still doesn't look frightened enough...I'll find a solution.

So how do you like the new poses?

04 April 2005, 06:25 PM
Hey Goro!

Great piece you're doing! fantastic light and great composition!

I made the eye white of the deer bigger...still doesn't look frightened enough...I'll find a solution.
don't overdue much the eyewhite or it will look like bambi... maybe open the mouth, for a cry in panic... i know, not too realistic, but in the other hand,,, is a troll realistic... maybe that works...

Troll and hunter poses look fine so far. eventually turn the trolls head a bit more into running direction. except he's following the rabbit.

rabbits backleggs should look forwards when frontleggs look backwards i think.

keep on rocking! cheers

04 April 2005, 06:27 PM
yoo goro,ur piece is shaping up very nice here..nothing much to say,u hit the color just right mate, dig it~!!

04 April 2005, 06:33 PM
this is so much better from when i last saw it... the light is really starting to work on the pic as a whole... i did like the troll ose before.. it suggested more heavyness to him, like he was stomping thru the forest rather than running... but it is just a small preference... can't wait to se it finiished... great stuff!!!

04 April 2005, 06:53 PM
thnx vahn, dunkelgold, kornel, andreasrocha, ms@zx

Thnx for your suggestion. The coloring (light and shadow areas) is far away from final.
So I'll still play around with the rabbit so it wil be spoted sooner... :)

thnx. How do you like the new pose of the Master?

I had already some eye white going on. I made it more obvious. Think it looks better now

Still working on it :)

I watched also those documentaries...I'm trying to get it right.
Thnx anyways.

Already tried that. It's just odd if I open the mouth of the deer....they usually don't
open the mouth. Only if the moan. Horses open ther mouth....but..deers rarely..
Well but maybe I'll find a solution.

Yes he is actually following the rabbit. That's why the Master has to pull the strings.
And the eye white...yes do you think it is too much now?
And the rabbit legs are exaclty as you said. The rear legs are in front actually.
I used ref on the bunny btw.

Thnx! Well the first trol was kind of static....wasn't dynamic enough.
I like the new one better. He seems to be moving.

Thnx for your comments guys!

04 April 2005, 07:36 PM
well, your artwork looks fine, but i think that it´s ... you have just one focus (perspective) and this make you work something static, the receptor its no integrate in you scene its out to the scene, this may be are you work less emotionaly its a paint, the perspective is fine but isn´t envolve the climax of the action, the relationship is the slave, but is slow in my opinion... is just my opinion (the technique is fine), but the concept sketch is a little plane (plane is the word?)...
excuse my english please. :)

04 April 2005, 09:59 PM
The composition for your piece is beautiful. It's so expressive. It seems almost alive, the motions and poses of your characters. I love it. And the atmosphere it just perfect. Not too dark, not too light. The entire piece seems so grand, even though the action of hunting is simple.

04 April 2005, 10:04 PM
Nice work on the bg deer, Goro. I get a strong sense of movement from their poses.

I think the foreground deer needs work, though. I found a good page of anatomy references that I hope you'll find useful here ( Like paperclip mentioned, there should be white on its muzzle as though it had stuck its nose in paint. I think you've got its body as too much of a pear shape which makes it look more feminine than I think you intended. Its torso should be more rectangular, and its front leg is too far back on the chest.

As far as a sense of panic, you might change the deer's pose a bit. If a deer is crashing through the brush, it might tuck its head down (I'm guessing here) so it's more streamlined like a torpedo. Also, if it's heading straight toward the viewer it seems like it's in a mad dash and doesn't care what's in its path.

04 April 2005, 10:06 PM
Man this picture oozes atmosphere, I love it. The only comment I have is that I think that the deer in the foreground looks to calm, maybe you can give it a more startled expression, mouth open etc...also maybe the monster that is being ridden can have a more active expression as well....but actually its got a cool smug look to it. Anyway looks great.

04 April 2005, 04:25 AM
this image has such an overwhelming feel... one of the best i have seen in this competition... the poses of all the creatures are fine i dont think i would be tweaking it to much at all.

ur right tho the expression on the deer is a lil off but i dont really have any solutions... maybe u could check some hunting photo's possibly u will find a shocked deer there (i really have no sugestions for the expression on the deer coz ive never even seen one:sad: )

i love this man i think its great ill be following eagarly from here... u cant really dick that up from here)
great work

04 April 2005, 05:31 AM
Nice! The pose change helped alot. Brought alot of energy to the piece.

04 April 2005, 05:47 AM
I think you've come a long way with this piece, and I'm impressed by the progress. I really love the composition with the extended width, and you seem to have paid special attention to seperating the foreground from the background by using warmer colors on your focal areas, and cooler greens in the background. My only critique on that is that the flower in the bottom section is one of the highest key colors in the entire painting, and my eye is immediately drawn to it (from an abstract point of view). It is the same saturation and intensity as one of your key focal points (the red cloak), and it detracts from the immediate focal point. I'd work on keeping the warm color, but bringing it down just a bit to put emphasis on the hunter...

Just my .02

04 April 2005, 10:36 AM
thnx nashya, Dissipation

Thnx for your crits. I have difficulties to see your point but I'll try to get more emotions
in this piece. Thnx anyways.

Thnx for the link I already checked those sites. The problem I have difficulties to translate the deer into a totally different position. Even if you know how the anatomy works...
I have the feeling that I have to paint the whole deer again. Maybe it's worth to do it.

Gunstar Hero
hehe everyone is talking about the deer :(
I think I'll change the whole deer.
And about the trol. I didn't touch him that much yet. There will be some changes in the
next updates.

Thnx man! Well the solution about the deer would be to make another one :)

thnx heather! Well yes you're right. I just put this red element down there as a reminder.
I wanted to include some red elements too. There will be a lot of changes when I go into
detailing. So the red plant won't be so red anymore then.
Still trying to get the balance in the whole image.

OK I don't have much time this weekend. So maybe there is no update. But you guys
convinced me that the deer is not scared and not dynamic and...just not cool....
I'll give it another try.
Bye bye little deer

thnx for your crits again!

04 April 2005, 11:36 AM
Some idea, just my personal vision. I like details soom much. Here's what I think: it would be very nice to see some spears sticking from the ground and a pile of spears attached to ogres back, so the spearman could grab them and throw at dears. (sorry for my english)

04 April 2005, 01:59 PM
The new pose of the human is well different for me. I think it's a bit less dynamic but the feelings is different we are just before the moment he shots. The new pose of the beast (the arms) is really excellent. We see more the difference of aim between the human and the beast.
Oh and last time, I forgot to congratulate you for the light placing just at the foot of the beast. It's a ver y good idea and it's really well done...

04 April 2005, 02:26 PM
i think u should stick a sign on the deer that says "scared"
cause them deer just look always the same.
To me it's plain obvious that isn't a joyjoy moment for
the deer but u can paint sweat drops on him if u like
and in conclusion i will provide you with the ultimate reference
image :

I just put a link there cause it's a big picture

off the topic: I think I'd just cut out the deer and scale it
up some, paint over the original and leave it be. should be just fine i think

04 April 2005, 03:24 PM
yeah man im loving it....been watcihing it silently or a while...

the poses are cool....i like it dispite what others mights sat..

it looks like cool and calm they have done it may times before and are sure of a
kill of this sweet little know if thats what you are going for but thats what i feel :)

as a crit id just sat to watch aot for your washed out areas...if your gonna go dark mix up the dark colours and think warm VS cool in thoes ma really make them stan out (and back) a little more...

have fun!!

04 April 2005, 03:46 PM
haha nice one squibbit ...goro that deer is perfect! use that one! :D :scream: :D

04 April 2005, 04:20 PM
Hey I've been watching your progress and I have to say great depth. I love your servants hand. I think to make the deer look more scared it would help to have his mouth open a little, like he was panting, running really hard. Maybe even open his eye up a tiny bit more. I know that deer don't normally look back when they run, so have you tried to make him look forward?

Great colour! Keep posting!

04 April 2005, 04:32 PM
nice work, it's great after every upgrade of your artwork
i'll try to keep watching it.

04 April 2005, 05:29 PM
Hi Goro ;) it's going better ;).. but the deer still need attention .. may be you have to move the mouth a little up - i 've seen deer to run - he is like a line, like an arrow ... i mean that the mouth have to be in the same line as the neck, the ears - contiguous to the neck, and the antlers - touching the body or the neck... :) try that.. i think it'll help:)
and something more ;)) if you are not tired ;P - put something in the hands of the trol... may be a net... to hunt them alive.. this will add some dinamic to the picture.... or some type of weapon... Keep going!

04 April 2005, 07:33 PM
Excellent The changes are great continue on this way !

04 April 2005, 10:37 PM
Nice developments! I've kinda been following this one 'from afar' and haven't posted (no real crits... I mean, you know what you're doing and lots of people more capable than I are giving you solid advice). Just wanted to let you know I love your work and especially your painting style... lovely colours too!

Nice call on the troll change of posture... oh, and if you want the deer to look a bit more scared, have its mouth slightly open with the bottom row of teeth just showing (like its breathin' hard)... *shrugs*

I'll be looking forward to more updates... Cheers!

04 April 2005, 10:43 PM
What's up dude,

I've been coming to this post, but i just don't know what to say. Well, dude, this piece kicks arse. It's so innovative. It's like taking the old style of painting, but adding that wickedly awesome creature trying to capture those deers. Damn nice concept dude. The colours are lovely to. Very original bro. i will keep coming to your thread to see your updates.

Heeey, I really like the way this is coming along.

The stance of the troll is a lot more interesting, and I really, really like the new spearman you have on top of him. He's way dynamic, and you've got that hurling motion down really well. I might cock his wrist down so that his spear is pointing at the deer as opposed to away from it. It really looks like he's in mid toss, but it this point the spear would end up flying into the upper right corner.

I think the big issue with the deer is mostly in its pose rather than facial expression. Right now it's in that gazelle-style graceful leap, and it looks more like he's bounding across a field than dashing through a forest. Rather than trying to cartoonize the expression to show fear, I'd try whipping up some other positions to see what you can work with. Maybe have his head down further, with his front legs spread out in front of him and his body pointed towards the ground rather than up and away from it. You've probably seen some type of animal break into a sprint, and they tend to do this scrambling-thing to gain traction and turn quickly. Go scare the hell out of some dogs and I think you'll see what I mean.

I might have its head tilted down, and possibly sort of looking back. I don't think this is typical though, and would be a purely stylistic choice and might not totally work (so try at your own risk). You could also give it some antlers, and have them tangled with brush/vines and such.

Really great progress, keep it up!

04 April 2005, 01:26 AM
i thought I throw some in to it
poses look good, I like the background maybe without those little deer
I like the fogy trees, but I think you need to darken up the left side of the whole thing
and beef up troll arms cause they look a bit skinny comparing o the rest of his body

04 April 2005, 01:38 AM
I'm still arguing this. Deer look like deer. You have captured
perfectly a moment when the deer is running for it's life.
It's obvious.Leave it there.Just scale it if you feel it doesn't
fit in the perspective. The position and all with the deer is
good, don't dwell on that one bit more. If you want to increase
the action put pine needles and stuff flying in the air, then
concentrate on the rest of the pic. There wasn't a horde
of us applauding your work when you got this most recent
sketch done for nothing. The pic kicks. Maybe focus on flying
debris and stuff, it might help alot. Motion blur you really should
avoid unless you get it to look very very good, which to my
eyes would only be in a place where you're having a bent
branch shoot back or something similar

04 April 2005, 02:21 AM
Your coloring prowers are awesome....

04 April 2005, 06:00 AM
This is looking really good so far. I love the movement in the picture and the colors look like they're turning out quite well, although I might like to see some more variation in them. There's also very good depth between foreground and background. Looks very appealing.

Keep up the good work!

04 April 2005, 06:07 AM
maybe the deer's head is to straight , maybe tilt its head back?

04 April 2005, 06:25 AM
At this moment the one thing I am trying to figure out is the very light patch under the troll's foot. Will the characters have 'leafy' patches of this same level of light on them? ^_^

04 April 2005, 06:44 AM
Hi Goro!

I jumped from page 1 - latest image - to this comment.

I think the image is full of life, and full of possibilities. It is a very convincing and exciting image.
I was scanning the thumbnails, and yours jumped right out at me.

I will stop around real soon, to see new developments. Your work is always interesting! No exceptions here!

04 April 2005, 10:28 PM
first of all thnx for all your comments and crits I appreciate it!

Yes I'm not going into details yet but nice Idea. I'll think about that thnx.

Squibbit that's just a fantastic ref! hehe

I spend the whole day...repainting the deer....well I'll update in a couple of minutes....
still not satisfied with it but I think it works a lot better....

Thnx for your suggestions guys!

04 April 2005, 10:38 PM
great idea and dynamic action .i can't wait to see more :applause:

04 April 2005, 11:25 PM (

OK I tried to make the deer more scared and more interesting. I think the composition works well now. The deer seems to be coming out of the painting...but there are still a lot of anatomy problems in there....
I had to fight with the anatomy and the perspective the whole I have difficulties to find out what\'s wrong and what is correct...I\'ll better go on painting tomorrow...

04 April 2005, 12:18 AM
if i cover head, neck and shoulder and look at the lower part it looks very cool.
if i cover the lower part and look at neck and the head it looks very cool.
but if i look at the whole deer it somehow doesnt fit together...

the high shoulder at the base of the neck is throwing me off somehow

id say start with the shoulder and the neck :)

ive just been on ur website and looked trough all ur artwork and i am very sure that u will get this deer right :D

04 April 2005, 01:15 AM
I was looking at that Vahn, I think the deer's right front leg looks like it's facing sideways, rather then forward?? That's the only thing that looks strange when I look at it. Rest looks really good, very good progress :)

04 April 2005, 03:03 AM
Any crits on the deer by me would be repetitions of the above...
So I'll just comment on how great it all looks! I love the composition, and the emotion of the deer is really comming across. Great details!

04 April 2005, 03:58 AM
Hey Goro,

You've got great energy coming out of your work. love this piece. (nit picking at this point) As far as the deer is concerned, perhaps tucking in the front legs and bringing them closer to the body, and also bringing the neck more forward and down a bit... but all around good job!

04 April 2005, 08:55 AM
i was confused with how u would make the deer frightened.... but this looks fantastic... its perfect
the compositions is fine better than fine and the perspective is better than that
this is truly great work

cannot wait for the fine details... when can we expect the next update>?

04 April 2005, 08:59 AM
Moin Goro,

Good Luck

04 April 2005, 11:09 AM
Hi Goro!

Great progress on your image since I last visited! The dear is much better (front legs still a bit strange, but RESPECT for going with the bloody tough perspective and pose!!) and the colors are still vibrant, which is helping the whole scene. One thing is interesting though: you put the master and servant relationship in the BG, and that's a brave thing to do...since the focus is on this relation. Now. If I were you (but I'm not, so don't listen to me :D !) I'd play around with focal depth and try popping out the two main characters somehow...the deer at the moment is taking quite a lot of attention and the name of the scene (if I'd have to give it a name, but I don't have to so don't listen to me again :D !) would be "The Hunt" or something, but these written above are just my observations bro! really am in love with the piece!

I'll B back!

04 April 2005, 11:33 AM
the hind legs. especially the back right. but loooking gooood.

04 April 2005, 11:54 AM
just checking in... looking nice!

04 April 2005, 04:25 PM
Hey Goro - nice job!

Can I just give a quick suggestion on the troll? What if you rotate the troll´s body a little to the left, slide his foot a little to the right - I think that you´ll show more the feeling of weight and speed on the troll. Cause he´s doing a bit of a curve there. Also the feeling that the troll is obeing the master´s comand on the leash will be stronger. Like - he´s aiming at the rabbit but his body is completely going for the deer. On the last comp I tought it was kinda slow - and deers are fast! hope that hepls - keep the great work!

04 April 2005, 04:36 PM
Hey Goro,

Love the light in your picture - beautiful colours in the background. Reminds me of early disney background art - slightly abstracted.

Great stuff....

04 April 2005, 05:28 PM
the hind legs. especially the back right. but loooking gooood.

yeah, i think you need to show some toe nails or something, i dont know. overall, i lke the action, very dynamic. great job!

04 April 2005, 11:23 PM (

Thnx for your comments guys! I just made another deer...wasn't satisfied with the pose and anatomy. I think this one will work now. (Hopefully)
I'm thinking about to change the format of the whole image again. Make it even wider...maybe tomorrow...I need to sleep.

How do you guys like the new deer?

04 April 2005, 11:40 PM
Run Bambi, run! Goood work!

04 April 2005, 02:23 PM
thnx LuisNCT

The deer almost killed me I'm glad you like it!
now I'm working on the background again.

04 April 2005, 02:39 PM
where's the worm?

04 April 2005, 03:14 PM
hehe gj goro

04 April 2005, 03:21 PM
Way to go on getting the deer to look scraed Goro, I think you've nailed it. I do like the idea of the close up perspective on the deer, but there's something still not quite there about his legs. I think they looked better tucked in together as you had them before(like this one, if it's of any use to you:

But I appluad your determination with this, I think with a couple of tweaks, it'll be looking great, and you'll be relieved you never have to look at a deer again!

04 April 2005, 03:23 PM
mhen, u disturbed those peacefully grazing deer... bad bad goro... i like it:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 12:41 AM
thinx guys!

yes I'll try to tweak the little deer again in a couple of days...need some distance
right now ;) Thnx for your suggestion!

04 April 2005, 12:45 AM (

Another update....
I changed the format again. And made the whole painting a bit wider.
Some tweaks on the pose of the troll and I opend his mouth. I also added some detail on the troll, slowly getting into details.

Again thnx for your suggestions guys!
It's very much appreciated.

04 April 2005, 02:12 AM
wow. very beutiful light. i like the rabbit:D

04 April 2005, 06:08 AM
I like your new poses, but I suppose I preferred the mouth closed. It seemed more natural in your previous version.

04 April 2005, 06:43 AM
i still like the other deer, the powerfully jumping one

04 April 2005, 07:40 AM
Soooo dynamic!
Beautiful colors and interesting composition.

Also one of my favourites on the challenge.
No crits from me..I am looking forward to the final image :)

04 April 2005, 08:14 AM
Great stuff Goro. I really love de dynamic composition of lights and characters :bounce:

04 April 2005, 09:18 AM
Looking good Goro! Maybe you can put in some diagonal lines (maybe trees, or something else) that are opposite to the diagonal movement of the big beast and the big tree behind him.

Keep it up. The colors are great!

04 April 2005, 09:46 AM

This is amazing, I dig the composition and idea behind everything. Keep the updates coming.

04 April 2005, 09:51 AM
very nice emotions, I liked your work.

good luck mate

04 April 2005, 05:29 PM
Finally PushaV has comeback to Goro's thread!

WOW thats is amazing. Your colors are nice!

(and I dropped the robot from my entry)

04 April 2005, 05:37 PM
dis just gets betterra and betterra! love it

04 April 2005, 05:51 PM
I like it! The movement is fab! The animals! Neat, Good luck!

04 April 2005, 08:50 PM
Looks so much better now! And that dear, he looks crazy! (Thumbsup 4 times for the spears :applause: yeah I meant ExAcTlY that). [sorry for my english again]

04 April 2005, 08:57 PM
very good composition , lightining and colors !!

love the florest !

04 April 2005, 08:06 AM
Ah, nice one goro, the deer's leg looks way better now. Keep up the good work, will be checking regulary for updates.

04 April 2005, 08:10 AM
this is fantastic i jus twanna see anouther update

04 April 2005, 08:45 AM
very beautiful "nature" pic, good work, i like the ambiance of this scene, good work

04 April 2005, 09:11 AM
Nice, I like the movement and the action...
Interesting concept.

04 April 2005, 12:36 PM
Hello Man
gOOD WORK...I think that you should maybe add some texture on character in comparaison with your's just my impression...:)

04 April 2005, 08:46 PM
thnx for your comments guys.

Ok thnx for your comment. I'll edit the mouth area a bit more

I'm planning to touch the deer again. I just don't feel like that right now.

yes I know what you mean...but when I add those diagonal lines in the other direction
the trol slows down. If you know what I mean. That's why I left them. I included
them at first though...

Fiolka Alexandre
yes of course. the trol is 30% finished. Ther will be a lot of detail going on in the next
updates. I just blocked in the colors. There will be folds and bumpy skin etc. don't worry;)

04 April 2005, 12:38 AM
i saw your thread from the start, and you now put the sub surface scattering on the fingers of the big guy, pretty cool, i never do that on my picture!
good work, and the forest look great.

04 April 2005, 01:09 AM
Really cool stuff.Like the dynamic feel,nice skills.:buttrock:

04 April 2005, 02:01 AM
Awesome update. hahaha, i must have missed the troll-tounge-update, sorta like it very much. the wider version helps it a lot. love the dynamic it has now. and bambi is looking real chicken now (if that fits) keep it up! Your piece rocks:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 02:22 AM
What a funny picture! How about exaggerating the eyes and the mouth of the 'bambi' just a little to project absolute fear? the eyes widen, showing more whites, and the mouth dropping a little lower into a narrow oval. I think that way, more impact can be achieved.

04 April 2005, 03:13 AM

I like the format much better now.
Seems the deers isnt a problem anymore, looks very scared. And its pose is quite cool too, adding motion to the pic.

Cant wait to see the next step!

04 April 2005, 03:30 AM
Your work is definately one of my favourites what I've seen around this contest :)
Your pic has indeed great colors and it posses very Disneyish (Mulan?) atmosphere. And there's great sense of anticipation.. what happens next? The monster seems to be more interested about the rabbit than the deer.. hehe, Just love the situation :)
However I like the deer how it was on the very earlier versions. Looked more natural. If you want to keep it that way how it is now, you should try to make deer's head most closest to the viewer. Whatever you do, this is going to be great.

04 April 2005, 08:57 AM
Some comments on your last edit.

Really like the teeth, horn and so on...
Not fond of the tongue which is well executed but not really necessary. I don't think your picture is that type of humour. Your beast has so much strength that It breaks it a llittle.
About he "weapon case" (don't know the exact term, where there are the arrows), it's cool but I think it hides a little the pose of the character. MAybe a little more on the left.

Anyway it starts to turn really great.

04 April 2005, 09:06 AM
this looks very promising so far!
love the tone and atmosphere. i will keep my eyes on your progreess! keep rockin man!

04 April 2005, 10:30 AM
Hello my Nizzle.... lol... Harlem is funny.

Just want to say how much I like the movement in this piece... fantastic.. Very little to crit AT ALL!... and that hurts me  lol.

Keep it up... this is gunna be a seriously sweet piece... Would like to see a nice bit of forest light beaming through the trees and giving some of those tasty leaf shape shadows on the characters..

Keep it up

04 April 2005, 10:49 AM
Sorry... don't want to be a pain, but... is the deers left front leg a bit off?... By this I mean anatomically incorrect?... It just seems a little closer to wherever it is running to than the rest of the body:shrug: ..

I could be wrong, may just be ma crap eyes:eek:

Other than that... as I said before... totaly ace piece!!

Love it:love:

04 April 2005, 11:39 AM

Great job, man,

Your "take" or posing is very dynamic, design is cool too...
I love your painting and especially the lightning. Except on the left arm of the troll, to my mind it's too mixed in the three behind and it would be better with a smooth "up-lightning".
Poor's life...

04 April 2005, 11:50 AM
I really like your latest update... good call on the troll's open mouth with the tongue hangin' out, LOL! Now he looks really distracted by that rabbit! :D

The wider format seems to give the piece a little more breathing room, too. Good call.

Can't wait to see more when you begin detailing. Carry on PLEASE!

04 April 2005, 01:10 PM
Cool idea and drawing !! GG! :D
I'll keep an eyeon u !

04 April 2005, 12:08 AM
Very good lighting. Nice mature colors Goro.

04 April 2005, 01:28 AM
really nice colours here, lots of warmth and depth. keep it coming.

04 April 2005, 10:08 AM
The bunnys ear SSS is outstanding!!
nice balance of the servant while running..

04 April 2005, 10:32 AM
that takes forme! Maybe that you should add some sheets in foreground on the top left or on the top order to give a little more depth..very good job!

04 April 2005, 09:57 PM
One tiny little insignificant crit...(I feel like a dummy critiquing the great Goro's work.)

But I think you need to seperate the troll dude and the deer from the background more. perhaps some brighter, more direct sunlight on them would be good?

I also think the background could benifit from a little more shade.

thats it. :)

04 April 2005, 10:12 PM (

Finally I found some time to do an update. Thnx for your comments and crits. It's very much appreciated.

I worked on the Master a bit more now.
Here is a coloring wip of the master...
Still have to add more detail.

I'll work on the lighting of the m&s and the deer later so they show up more. I'll add some highlights and leaf shadows and stuff...

04 April 2005, 10:18 PM
it looks great. i guessed you wouldnt give him too much detail since the scale would make it look odd. good work

04 April 2005, 08:39 AM
i think the level of detail is fine... ghost said that it would just look odd at a smaller scale he is right... i mean u must do the highlights and he shadows but the expression is great... the proportions and colours really work.

great painting all the best
