03 March 2005, 10:31 PM
Stop it Cake! I already know it going to be awesome so it's ok if you stop working on it now. :P
PS:Nobody likes you. Not Doug, not Matt Dixon, not Jesus.
03 March 2005, 10:33 PM
Awesome Cake. I like the layout of this a lot. Maybe focus a bit more on the characters...but you're better than me so I could be wrong. Excellent work at any rate.
03 March 2005, 10:37 PM
Nice drawing. The way the figure sits on the monster looks well conceived. Kinda side-saddle.
BTW... I had a look at your web site (http://www.kekaikotaki.com/). Looks cool. You should put a link to it in your sig.

new sketch focusing more on the characters and their designs.
04 April 2005, 05:14 AM
Hey man, I really like your style. One crit is to show it clearer that the girl is holding onto the horn. Good composition.
04 April 2005, 05:31 PM
Very cool man! Stronger composition, I like.
PS: Jesus doesn't love you. But I will tell him to maybe....we'll see.
04 April 2005, 07:21 AM
Tried to define more of the elements for the piece. Gonna start painting after this.
Thanks for all the comments and crits guys!
04 April 2005, 07:26 AM
Fantastic... Great angle... loadsa movement... and a bloodybigbeastie!!

04 April 2005, 07:44 AM

04 April 2005, 10:40 AM
i really love your style , just visit your website! I'm very amazing , with your line and color , i'm sure it will come out perfect ,
04 April 2005, 04:09 AM
Did a first pass with some grey tones. working out some overall lighting, on the characters and evironment.
Also, did a flip to check and tweak composition. Working to emphasize the compsition of the characters too. Making that foot stepping foward, TheBeast looming, and TheLady in a more "commanding"(i use the term loosely, i feel their relationship is more amicable) and more dominant role; She's riding on him, he's carrying her, im trying to not fall into a "jabba-the-hutt-slave-leia" situation.
anyway, thank you for you comments and crit as always guys! i must admit, this is really fun.
04 April 2005, 05:13 AM
looks good bro keep at it
04 April 2005, 05:26 AM
I'm loving the energy you have going with your stokes. Whatever you do, dont lose that in the finished piece!
Awsome stuff so far.
04 April 2005, 05:49 AM
this is gonna be a great entry~!i like the asymmetry horn though:).i'm gonna wait for the color piece since this is a kick ass piece even only with greytone..
04 April 2005, 07:01 AM
wow, so dynamic! Very good work, keep it up!
04 April 2005, 09:18 AM
Yes, good looking dramatic camera angle! I love it!
keep posting, cheers: Kornél
04 April 2005, 09:49 AM

04 April 2005, 09:55 AM
I cant wait for those coloring wips. I just know im going to learn plenty from them!
Very good work. Maybe you should start uglifying your artwork so that us mortals could have a chance in this challenge
04 April 2005, 10:51 AM
Alright, Kekai! Now we know that we're in for a great entry! Your first value-pass looks awesome. The perspective of the servant looks very good, and the lower part in shadow really makes the top part stand out. I cannot suggest much at the moment, because it is still too early. Just one thing...the assymetric horns are quite original, but I think you should balance that asymmetry a bit more. There seems to be too much weight on the right side.
Give us more!
04 April 2005, 10:59 AM
WHAAAA?!! Good god... this stuff is brilliant! Beautiful sketches, dynamic pose, expressive character designs... geez, this piece will rock for sure! Lovely style too! I absoluetly can't wait to see you begin paints on this. (this is me on the edge of my seat... uncomfortable perhaps, but I'm sure it'll be worth the wait)
Please... more, more, MOOOORRREEE!
04 April 2005, 11:35 AM
wow nice angle
04 April 2005, 02:26 PM
I really like this composition you've done here. Very dynamique with a lot of ambiance, even if it's in b/w. Don't know if it's just me, but I kind of see the big guy looking up in the sky, and I must say I think it gives some interesting emotions to the seen. This out of focus has just picked up my curiosity and I'm wondering what may be coming up from the sky that may be a threat to this powerfull creature. Nice work so far. :)
04 April 2005, 04:32 PM
What fantastic flow. Love the background elements.
04 April 2005, 05:45 PM
Man . . . can people, like, stop being better than me . .. it is really quite depressing!!!
Seriously buddy great stuff... your anatomy is spot on and angle is fantastic. can not wiat to see it in colour.. character designs rock!
04 April 2005, 05:53 PM
great concept. bravo!
nothing i can do but admire for now :)
04 April 2005, 06:26 PM
This is really looking nice dude. Good choice of camera angle. maybe a bump the highlights a bit. Great characters. Can't wait to see the colours.
04 April 2005, 07:22 PM
i love the camera angle too, your art is awesome. you made my day ;)
04 April 2005, 08:53 PM
great everything from sketch to first color.....and the angle...frightening
04 April 2005, 09:42 PM
Looking good! - I like the composition :)
04 April 2005, 10:09 PM
Arggghh ... Nothing to crit:buttrock:
Waiting to see more
04 April 2005, 01:07 AM
Great pose and awesome concept!
04 April 2005, 03:39 AM
Started to add details. Did some work on theLady, spruced up her face and changed position of her arm. Also uped the contrast on the overall image. Added some details to theBeast helment.
andreas - hmm, good call. currently adding more stuff to the left side.
Kraull - interesting point, hopefully i can convey that type emotion in the final piece.
and thank you all for the comments!
04 April 2005, 08:13 AM
I like the flow and movement in this a lot. Looking good!
04 April 2005, 10:01 AM
OMG! I'm just loving your style... half of me says stop now, the black and white looks great as it is, looks fantastic even without colour, the other half wants to see more...
keep it up, it's heading towards a great piece of art.
04 April 2005, 10:32 AM
yeh man this starting to look intense keep at it, love the feel you got going that beast of his looks like he can do some real damage :D
04 April 2005, 10:38 AM
Love this! Your composition is very dynamic, the sweep of that framing curve really gives a sense of movement and foreboding. The design of the beasty guy is unique, a sort of mix of all kind of influences, and all that detail you have in the headpiece - wow! Can't find anything to crit, good work!
04 April 2005, 12:57 PM
wow! it's getting better and better...! You can try to keep these dinamic brushstrokes for the final image!
sorry for my english...
04 April 2005, 06:01 PM
Awesome you sonovabitch. I love the angle and the details are coming along nicely. I figured they would.
04 April 2005, 06:06 PM
Wow, this is really looking great. There is a real sense of movement in it, great job.
04 April 2005, 09:08 PM
you have a good style, hand gold fingers!
i did'nt see you before, that is nice concept (love monster)

My Master and Servant entries:
04 April 2005, 09:44 PM
i love the angle, the rough treatment, really cool. good job!
04 April 2005, 05:44 PM
nice atmosphere. very good.
04 April 2005, 06:29 PM
Ohh man, thats the same type of layout i was thinking for my daemon. But damn man. Yours is just awesome. So far my picture is just a bunch of lines and a really original/mundane monster.
04 April 2005, 06:32 PM
This is probably my favorite I've seen so far. The weight and motion are conveyed extremely well. I like the details in the clothing, especially.
04 April 2005, 12:02 AM
Should I just leave now or wait till your painting blows me totally away! Wow dude wow!
04 April 2005, 12:38 AM
This looks wicked. Energy, great composition and interesting characters. No crits for now, I'll keep looking for updates.
04 April 2005, 03:41 PM
I love your picture so far.
The way you model shapes and the sharpness in the brush strokes.
The only thing that is looking curious is the arm supporting the character. I won't say that this is an impossible angle but it is not so natural. However I admit that it works not so bad.
Cya and good luck !
04 April 2005, 03:44 PM
Wooah nice sketching.. I like this alot! Has a great mood to it.
04 April 2005, 10:49 PM
did some quick color work. nothing to much, but just got it out of grey. working on the bags and some foreground elements.
thanks for the replys guys as always!
04 April 2005, 10:55 PM
excellent touch as always:thumbsup:
04 April 2005, 11:02 PM
Looking money, Cake...the sort-of fish eye lense you've got going really makes the composition a successful one, I'm lovin' it
04 April 2005, 11:32 PM
Lookin' really good so far dude. Good luck!
04 April 2005, 11:35 PM
 Great composition, texture and mood.
04 April 2005, 11:47 PM

Iv got nothing but praise right now, your entry Its developing nicely
enougth, :D thanks for the inspiration cake!!
04 April 2005, 11:59 PM
pretty dynamic painting, love the color, looks like there's going to be some detail involved
04 April 2005, 12:54 AM
man was I wrong, this new colour sketch is amazing... thought adding colour to that amazing black and white would ruin it but no. Keep it going... it's developing nicely.
04 April 2005, 01:15 AM
Is that Michael Jackson on his shoulder? -5 points
04 April 2005, 01:40 AM
Yours is one of the entries I've liked the best. At this point, the color balance and atmosphere is very well set, maybe you could consider to keep this scheme, and enphasize volumes through lights and shadows to pop things out. Keep an eye on the giant's hands, specially the right one, it has a strange volume defined right now, kinda convex instead of concave. With a good, grasping hand the giant figure would gain a lot.
04 April 2005, 01:45 AM
awesome lights. i really like your brushes.
i wish you good luck, and expect new updates.
04 April 2005, 02:19 AM
really really it seems so strong...even it was a sketch we can see will be a good work...
good luck bro....
04 April 2005, 02:50 AM
I like this one. Nice posing on the lady and great mood. I'd probably change one of the hand positions tho because they seem to be saying 2 different things. My suggestion would be to make them both palm towards the viewer or both away from the viewer. I like away from the viewer though... seems "cooler" i think. overall it looks very nice:)
04 April 2005, 03:22 AM
awesome piece. keep it up!
04 April 2005, 08:03 AM
Looks great... the tonal work is excellent and i really like the detail in the horns and cloth...
It'll be interesting to see how much colour you bring into it.
04 April 2005, 08:32 AM
Very nice indeed. I'm interested to see how you intend to colour this. It suggests a limited pallette will really suit this piece. The design is rock solid
04 April 2005, 11:46 AM
simply awesome. Very nice poses and great composition.
no crits so far...
04 April 2005, 11:53 AM
very beautiful pic with an extraordinary ambiance, i like this scene, good work
04 April 2005, 04:47 PM
Very nice. The details are coming along great i see. Awesome piece :buttrock:
04 April 2005, 05:47 PM
wow! thats truly amazing.. love the scene and the mood. good luck
04 April 2005, 08:03 PM
this is looking good. i love the dark tones, very dramatic.
04 April 2005, 10:40 PM
Great! Heres an idea, just my personal vision, maybe youll try it if have time. It would be great to see a bright red colors in background. It seems to me it'll suit picture. (sorry for my english)
04 April 2005, 11:23 PM
Run with this one! It gets my vote fer the Challenge winner!
04 April 2005, 02:16 AM
wow. this is fantastic thread. very lovely work. i'll be visiting this one quite often.
04 April 2005, 04:35 AM
yep I'm quitting! Your just too good man! Can ya please rub out half of it, go on holiday and come back next year? No? Ahhh well your work is full on awesome man! RESPECT!
04 April 2005, 06:05 AM
This is looking amazing! One of the best entries I've seen so far! Good luck with this one :-)
04 April 2005, 06:47 AM
This makes me want to start over. Definately a solid composition and it keeps getting better. The hand areas look like they need fixing although looking at the way you paint, I'm sure these will look great when the detail hits them:)
04 April 2005, 11:51 AM
* Voici le résultat de votre traduction :
Hello, I discover your project, congratulation it large, is made matters is dynamic, a painting which will finish very high, good courage for the continuation.

04 April 2005, 12:16 PM
This style is almost similar to the other guy who won the 2d challenges twice in a row. Man this piece makes me so mad at how good it is. All this time i've been working on my composition thinking of all kinds of crazy things when really something as subtle and simple as the view you have gives off a much more dynamic effect!
This is by far the best piece I have ever seen in the challenge, I must say! I will definatly try to redo mine now so that it will be on par! Man this brings such inspiration to people like me! Errrr...i am so mad, the more I look at the piece the more it screams first place winner...I cant let that happen! NO!!! *Corey runs to his local tablet and draws a tear drop*
04 April 2005, 12:32 PM
04 April 2005, 01:12 PM
simply amazing~the color use as well as the composition..top notch!
04 April 2005, 01:27 PM
I think it's the one of the most observable works in 2d challenge entries. I like the monster's design and defination. Details are great.
I should criticize two things in the composition . First ground is very uncertain and we are looking to the sight from a fish-eye lens, i think but the remaining of the composition doesn't complete this optic feature. Second, If the master is rider, i think you can chose a different expression for her like when ordering or signing somewhere and says GO GO ! ext. She should express more serious and commanding expression than melancholic expression.
Awesome work keep up pal . . .
04 April 2005, 02:06 AM
Many small tweaks here and there. took some time to put some effort into the hands. Good calls on the right one, i took digital_boberts idea and just turned the hands away, which nicely dodged my bubble hand problem that Sir Patroclo brought to mind. Good point with the composition and woman expression DelanoyR. Im working more on the woman.
Again thank you for all the comments and crits guys!
04 April 2005, 02:13 AM
Still looking nice dude. Umm... i just noticed this, but the creatures right arm (the one thats forward us) is a bit small compare to the left arm which is at the back. That's all i could see.
Awesome textures btw. I'll be keep up.
04 April 2005, 02:14 AM
wow excellent brushwork and character design... i really dig the blue u added to the palette
04 April 2005, 03:06 AM
very nice painting. i must agree with them, this is one of the best i have seen. good job.
the theme stand out.
04 April 2005, 03:29 AM
good work thus far... although i do think that the hands are a bit small for a character of his size... proportion wise i mean.
04 April 2005, 05:47 AM
Awesome painting. Love the drama in the sky.
04 April 2005, 05:57 AM
This is one of the best that I have seen. Great job. The color scheme fits the mood of the picture.
04 April 2005, 06:33 AM
I really like the perspective and the mood! Neat colours. It is going to be cool!
04 April 2005, 10:05 AM
i love what you're doing, but i think beast's hands should be much more larger. the right hand palm could be visible, two.
great whole work, and good luck!
04 April 2005, 12:28 PM
I've just to say that you should maybe add some colors..like on the head...to accentuate contraste..but bichromie give a interessant aspect on your work...it's up to you:)
04 April 2005, 02:00 PM
Great style, the colors nail the mood well. For crit... i'd say the woman's dress gets easily lost in the creature, nothing big, but thought i'd mention it.
04 April 2005, 03:28 PM
This looks amazing! You have spectacular paint application. What program are you using? I want to know how you're getting such natrual paint texture up in the sky!
04 April 2005, 04:29 PM
Loved this one ever since I first saw it as a sketch... and boy, it is coming together! Amazing detail and wonderfully gritty textures. HOW DO YOU DO IT?!! Nice change on the hand poses... is it me, or do they seem just a tad small compared to the rest of his body? *shurgs*
Great stuff... can't wait to see more! You rock bro... Keep it up.
04 April 2005, 05:54 PM
A composition and coloring technic are so very amazing!
I like your style...
04 April 2005, 06:55 PM
Great mood on this piece, backed up by firm draftsmanship.
04 April 2005, 06:58 PM
one small crit, the right hand seems to be twisting inward more than it should, judging from the rendering of the radius, maybe if you want to keep the same hand position, indicate the radius twist a little bit more.
I also feel like a monster this size should have a more rough, battle-worn hands. just my two cents.
overall this is a really nice piece.
04 April 2005, 07:37 PM
colour are nice,.. great mood in this... and sky is really nice..nothin gto crit really.. i think the characters right arm is slightly too short... but might just be me.
the skin colour is really nice though
04 April 2005, 08:23 PM
I like this painting a lot. It reminds me of how Russian Contemporary artist paint. Good hustle.
04 April 2005, 08:23 PM
u nailed the colors right on man and u are almost there~!i love every nook of it:)
04 April 2005, 05:21 AM
Kekai, your stuff is great. More fine tuning in terms of color and it will rock! Good luck in your entry.

04 April 2005, 04:45 PM
Great stuff here! Really looking forward to seeing the progress! Would be very interested to know what prog you're using also as that paint texture in the sky is simply awesome! ..... not taking anything from your skills btw, I know the prog is just a tool! Good luck!
04 April 2005, 05:15 PM
Just want to say, that the detail in this picture has my heart racing... the vacant look on the servants face... although meaningful.. is verging on irony!
The only thing I think I would want to see added to this piece... is some kind of steam.. or heat/smoke.. coming off the servant (only very slight.. maybe just on the arms.. and very stylised) that gives the impression he has just come through an obstacle of some sort... or even from the core of the earth?? I think it would add a sense of drama to the entry... Just a thought... feel free to say no... but you're so close to nearly finished I think it could be worth a try?...
I will leave it in your capable hands..:D
Excellent work Kekai, so many good artists in here... the competition is vast!
04 April 2005, 07:31 PM
Awesome Masaru Kotaki! looking really good, keep it up bro!
04 April 2005, 08:21 PM
Nicely done, can't wait to see more.
04 April 2005, 12:53 AM
Excellent work my friend. This piece is one of my favorites of yours, very dynamic, very well rendered. Brilliant stuff.
04 April 2005, 01:35 PM
I thought I had reply to encourage you but I forgot so it's time. Really like youp picture especially composition and colors. The sky is really great. I think the difficulty will be to make the character really clear to see. But anyway
04 April 2005, 02:31 PM
I love the horns on the creature's helmet. Great angle too, nice work so far!
04 April 2005, 11:38 PM
great work mate! keep the updates flowing.
04 April 2005, 08:19 AM
Gah so many pages to read through. Lots of good comments. I'm not sure if this has been brought up or not. I realize some perspective is going on here, but the hands look a bit dainty for such an amazing looking undead warrior creature. Another thing is on his right hand...i'm not sure if that dark matter behind it is a background element or a rock he will be putting his hand on later. There is a slight tangency going on with the hand position and this object and it tends to flatten the image. Maybe bringing it lower, or indeed make it something he is putting his hand on. Just some thoughts.:)
The design on your helm is working quite nicely. I assume this is still way into WIP so I wont' go on too much longer, but the only other comment I have is that this is fairly monochromatic. Maybe you can have a color pop for focal point or push the value range a bit more. Great work I look forward to the finished piece.
04 April 2005, 02:08 PM
Dude, Kekai, I knew you'd blow us away. The composition is dynamic and that beast is too badass... good luck man!
04 April 2005, 03:05 PM
I really like the background, youv'e so far captured a great mood, real nice,
04 April 2005, 05:26 PM
I Love This One
04 April 2005, 05:43 PM
I like the palette choice and texture you used on your piece...it really adds layers of atmosphere on the piece which already had it even during the sketchup. My only crit is the angle of the piece. A more dramatic point of view would have shot the piece thru the roof.. Otherwise its all good
04 April 2005, 06:08 PM
i haven't subscribed here yet...? i just love your style. amazing! good luck!!
04 April 2005, 06:18 PM
very good. i like the fact he's blind. top job bud!
04 April 2005, 07:32 PM
stunning job ! I like the creature helmet and the details of his arms
04 April 2005, 07:45 PM
changed the hands a little(finally:)) tweaked the right arm, made a little bigger. added some small color tweaks here and there, to the sky, helmet, and dress. and overall just tightened up a whole bunch of little things.
Evil_Gerbil, i use photoshop, and i have some textures that i have that use in my brushes when i feel that they work, or if i just want a messy, traditional feel.
everyone thanks again for your comments and critiques!
04 April 2005, 07:54 PM
This is one of my favorite entries so far. The colors and brushes are just great. Try to work on the big guy's hands. The right hand looks kinda' funny...Good luck man! I'll stay close
04 April 2005, 08:21 PM
dude, this is incredible! This is in Painter right? How do you get all those awesome textures? I'm still fairly new to pinter and i can't figure out how you do that.
04 April 2005, 10:48 PM
Kekai, this is coming along really well. I really dig the texture that you give your pieces. The detail on the beastie fella's head is stunning. Keep it up.
04 April 2005, 11:01 PM
You are my master <3
04 April 2005, 02:25 AM
You got a very pro sketching and painting. I just love the overall picture, that really emboss your characters. I awaiting you see your further result, good work buddy!
04 April 2005, 02:52 AM
Looking good! I like the rough/traditional style. A little more refining to the hands and arms of the big guy and you'll have pretty sweet painting!
04 April 2005, 05:08 AM
Great stuff you have here. I'm loving the style and mood of the piece and the details on the big guys helmet is wicked. Keep up the good work!

Awsome flow to this piece. One thing, the arm on the left of the page looks a little awkward, it may look better as an open palm position.
04 April 2005, 08:43 PM
Your painting is really cool, by its treaty of matter and environment, I could you suggest if you allow to re-examine a little the arms and fabric the fold of the leg before which is a little rigid, go go, for the continuation.
04 April 2005, 11:13 PM
I like the details that are popping up in your painting. You should get an award just for the brushes you create! Excellent work.
04 April 2005, 09:59 AM
Keai, I like this work! I'm always so addicted to pictures that got a kind of "Warhammer"-quality about them. Nice atmosphere and angle.
Maybe two additional details? The hand on the left side of the painting seems to be a little bit too small. Also I would reconsider the position of the finders: when you form a claw with your hand, the forefinger should rise a little bit more?
And some more things dangling from the left side of the belt could add some more interesting shapes unto the folds of the dress of the "beast".
Just some ideas, good work anyway,
:) <- Lutz

Damn man. Stop being so damn good. I really don't have any suggestions, except maybe more detail on the girl and arms of the big guy, but you'd probably knew that. Over all, suuuuuuper!!!

[QUOTE=prostrise]Kekai Kotaki has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

My master & servant 2d (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=232571)
05 May 2005, 12:58 PM
Awsome mood of doom and gloom, I love the servant, one of the best i've seen yet for this style of concept yet. Though I hope you can retain and maybe even increase the contrast between your 2 main characters. The landscape, style of sky and camera angle is an instant winner with me mate. Once more just gotta say the mood is brilliant. Keep at it, Can't wait to see it finished. Good luck!!
05 May 2005, 04:23 PM

Amazing piece, quite possibly one of my favourites.
I like the painting textures, and the scene is so expressive!

05 May 2005, 05:00 PM
This is simply superb mate, like i've said before I love the sense of doom and sheer raw power. The contrast between the characters is beautiful and works really well. The hands are definately lokking much better. Cmon man work faster, I cant wait to see more. Its one of the best concepts i've seen on the challenge. The way it charges towards the viewer is just amazing. Keep going mate, brilliant.
Check out mine and let me know what you think :

05 May 2005, 07:02 PM
GOOD!!! GOOD to see your still in it man. I was getting worried. Your piece id beautiful!!
05 May 2005, 09:48 AM
Tweaked some details and color. But, thats all she wrote. I am glad to be a part of this, its was so much fun!
05 May 2005, 09:55 AM
It's gorgeous. I sat for a while just studying it, and the perspective makes the viewer feel small and in awe. That said, even if one were in dire danger of being smashed flat by those terrific cloven hooves/boots, you just can't look away. There's also - and I wish I knew how you achieved this - a feeling of swaying in the image. You've just caught the creature as it shifts weight to take another step. It doesn't look posed, or stilted.. it just looks like you caught that milisecond before he unweights and all that bulk begins to shift to the other hip.
Best of luck with the Challenge. Your style is something else.
05 May 2005, 10:14 AM
This certainly is impressive!! I love the way you captured the essential atmosphere... the only crit I have is that her thumb looks rather strange, sort of as if it's on the wrist.
But that's it!
Wonderful detail, and the overall effect is of an oil painting. I especially love the horns against the sky, perfect blend of color and detail in that area.
Good luck in the challenge! :applause: You deserve it...and I don't say that lightly.
05 May 2005, 10:54 AM
freakin awsome!!! i luv it!!
got my vote indeed.
can u send the cool effects brushes?? pretty pleeeeeeeeaaaaase!!
05 May 2005, 12:03 AM
Am I right in saying that you are good at painting off the computer aswell? You have a good sense of proportion, eveything is perfectly put together and the best thing about it is the angle ... the view from down below is great, it gives a scale to everything that makes one feel small looking at the painting. Good luck!
05 May 2005, 07:00 AM
looks good man!! glad you made it in time! you see mine?
05 May 2005, 09:52 PM

I'm with Dougiepoos on this one - the helmet steals the show. Incredibly badass headgear. You've got a good sense of scale going on here, and I really like those colour choices.
All the best for the judging, Kekai.
