Aaah, another familiar avatar! Hi gordonm, have fun with the challenge! Aaaaand... difficult topic you've chosen. How r u going to visualise the master and servant relationship...?

Aaah, another familiar avatar! Hi gordonm, have fun with the challenge! Aaaaand... difficult topic you've chosen. How r u going to visualise the master and servant relationship...?

Hey coCoKNIght

This is the first concept - I wanted to get something posted. I have been rolling that very thought around in my mind. If I follow this path, I will probably deviate from the original story, and introduce some supernatural elements.
I have some other ideas, to visualize - hopefully real soon!

03 March 2005, 04:46 PM
ok, keep em coming

03 March 2005, 05:33 PM
Curious, never expected that. But it's kind of beautiful. Like it, I wonder what you'll come up with next.

03 March 2005, 11:51 PM
Looks painful but good so far. Do you intend the image you have up to reflect the final painting at all?

I'll hang around and check this thread out every now and again. Good luck!
P.S-- thanks for critiquing my thread! I can use all the help I can get!!

Oh, the pressure! Are you feeling it??

03 March 2005, 02:46 AM
Hey paperclip!

I hope to have some more up by 5:00am est (I work on drawing at night)

I have not commited yet, but intend to very soon - I want to get the right "vehicle" to capture the idea of "Master and Servant", but don't want to waste time humming and hawing.

Tonight I am going to work up some images the may be pretty good - MacBeth, Lady MacBeth, and Lady MacBeths sevitude to the quest for power at any cost. Two levels of servitude:
- Lady MacBeths desire for power (master) Lady MacBeth (servant)
- Lady MacBeth (Master) MacBeth (servant)

Oh, the pressure! Are you feeling it??

ya always :argh:

***duplicate image***

03 March 2005, 07:04 AM (

This image is based on a piobaireachd (pronounced Pee-Brok) (classical bagpipe music) - titled "Pipers Warning to his Master"

This piobaireachd is based upon a siege by clan Campbell against clan MacDonald at Castle Dunyveg , on the island of Islay around 1647.

The besieged MacDonald chieftan Coll MacDonald, slipped out of the castle to seek reinforcements from Kintyre, and Ireland.

During his absence, the Campbells found the source of the MacDonalds water supply and cut it off. The MacDonalds were forced to capitulate.

Coll MacDonald was returning in his Ship. His Piper recognized the vessel, and realizing the danger that his master was in, asked the Campbells if he could play a piobaireachd to lament the battles loss.

The piper went to the castle battlements, and played his tune. His master recognised the tune as a warning, and turned away from the castle.

Once the Campbells had realized what had happened, they forced the piper to play a number of lively tunes on his pipes, and then proceeded to cut off all of his fingers, as punishment for warning his master of the danger.

(notes derived from "The Art of Piobaireachd" by Ian L McKay 1966)

The image was not researched - just banged out

this is a study of a rather nasty master servant relationship

03 March 2005, 03:31 PM
All my encouragement, for this new challenge, your first drawing
is very tortured and releases a rough art in the "Munch",
Good luck for the continuation.

03 March 2005, 03:38 PM
oo haven't stopped by here yet , seems u got your ideas flowing gordon,
have fun!

03 March 2005, 03:46 PM
Liking those studies, they capture the relationship between master and servant really well. Good luck!

03 March 2005, 03:33 PM
Hi, gordonm!

Aparently, most of us are (or were) having trouble at clearly depicting the relation between master and servant. But I guess that's a good thing - it means we have a better chance of having the final images looking new, original.
That's a really cool technique you're using for the sketches - the one with the face actually looks like it was done with thread and needle!:)
I'm afraid I only dimly recall Mcbeth's story (and that from the movie) but quests for power always made good subjects.

Good luck!

edit - Almost forgot... My firewall was blocking your popup thread and it never does that here at CG. I now have you in my favourites but maybe you should replace your link just in case other people are having the same problem.

03 March 2005, 05:48 PM
Hi Sónia - thanks for dropping by!

My subject has not yet been finalized, I want to get some good comprehensive overviews, of a few different themes up within the next week or so. I want to lock down the main topic sooner rather than later - but not prematurely.

Thanks for mentioning the blockup issue - I will have to look into it

03 March 2005, 12:05 AM
Some cool topics I gotta think about:

identical twins
fraternal twins (hey thats me!)

Siamese twins! - identical, fraternal

These topics send images racing through my brain - now I gotta see if I can catch any of those images (without killing them)

03 March 2005, 12:08 AM
Same as Tranchefeux!!and have fun!!!

03 March 2005, 01:04 PM
I like the Study of Evil Dominance the best. Very interesting drawing style! Your Macbeth image says it is a detail, can we see the rest?

03 March 2005, 06:59 PM
OKMER - thanks for the comments, and dropping by!

Jose -
thanks for the input - glad you dropped by!
I guess calling the MacBeth image a detail, was a bit of a misnomer, the drawing posted is complete - the composition is not - I am still struggling with getting "the big picture/concept" nailed down. I have been avoiding uploading any more image "fragments". I have got to suck it up and get a complete working idea in place!

03 March 2005, 07:00 PM
interesting , I'm curious to see how this will develope...Keep doing what you do!

03 March 2005, 08:19 PM
Hey, Gordon! Good luck in the challenge. I have to say I like the story of the piper best so far. Just the idea of a servant warning his master of danger, the servant being killed for his loyalty and the chieftain escaping safely sounds like a compelling theme. The chieftain seems like a rat bastid for ducking out, but the clan must live on. ;)

Any thoughts of integrating your more colorful designs, even just as a concept sketch? Maybe an illusionist or a Timothy Leary character who controls swirls of light and color for the amusement of friends? I haven't seen anything abstract so far, so it would certainly stand out among some of the other entries.

Looking forward to more ideas!

03 March 2005, 10:45 PM
CoreyArtE - thanks for the input, and dropping by!

ILikesoup -
Hey fellow DSG-er!!! Glad you came by!
I am still working on the "Pipers Warning to his Master", but I am looking at opening the idea/story up to give me greater flexability in creating the image.
I am also looking at other themes, but I do want to get some full compositions up here really soon!
Interesting you should ask about the more colorful images I do - That is how I worked on the "Grand Space Opera" ( competition. (sadly I didn't complete it). See ya later!

04 April 2005, 02:32 PM

04 April 2005, 10:39 PM (

concept drawing (rough) nasty demon

04 April 2005, 10:43 PM (

This concept attempts to set up a relationship between a tortured, wicked man, and a demon who is controlling his torment. I gotta add a good force, an lots of details

04 April 2005, 12:35 AM (

a basic colour idea

04 April 2005, 10:42 PM
youve got some good sketches going here, keen to c what your going to do with it.
gl

04 April 2005, 04:45 PM
Hey, is that Pazuzu? Scary!

Keep it up!

04 April 2005, 05:48 AM
GhostInTheMachine - Thanks!

SoniaNotRed - no (I don't think) just some nasty demon (not nasty enough yet!)
I googled Pazuzu - - I am surprised that I had never heard of this demon before. It was an interesting read!

04 April 2005, 08:46 AM
hi! shame on me I weren´t suscribed yet...
I like the idea you have here, especially the torment coming out of his head, it´s readable.

Good work! keep it up!

05 May 2005, 06:07 AM (

Wow so little time left! Time to hustle. I have got along way to go but I am determined to finish this competition

05 May 2005, 02:53 AM (

Figure groupings - little demon guys, and tortured, tormented humans

05 May 2005, 12:20 PM
hehe.. you have some really hardcore stuff going on here. interesting thread:) i see you still working on the sketches, you have to hurry up mate:D go go go :)

05 May 2005, 02:42 PM
Hey, Gord! I love the anguish in post #37. Great pose and strongest compositon, IMO. I'd love to see you work with that one, but create a stronger link between human and demon. Maybe the demon is holding a voodoo doll or peering at the human through a magic cauldron?

In your latest concept, funny that the imps/demons are made in the same image as the humans. Is that you? Looks like your old avatar. :) The flame over the head is a really good, clear icon.

Final thought: Don't worry so much about choosing a perfect concept. Just find an idea you'll enjoy working on for the next 12 days and do your best!:wip:

Cheers! And thanks for visiting my thread. I need all the encouragement I can get.
Sooo sleepy. . .

05 May 2005, 03:38 PM
Ant4d - Thanks for dropping by

ILikeSoup - Yup thats me Ugh! - I needed some reference material for the composition - The physiology is gioing to change - just the poses will stay. I wouldn't want to subject the world to those images of me - way too scarey!

And Yes I have a major endurance test ahead !!!

05 May 2005, 10:00 PM (

I am going to suck it up and finish this thing. I hope all line art will be done before I finish for the day

05 May 2005, 10:10 PM (

Wow so little time left! Time to hustle. I have got along way to go but I am determined to finish this competition

OK - This is the concept I am going with. Time to hustle up and run with it!

05 May 2005, 10:14 PM
Nice drawing on the hands and expression! love it. Need more!

05 May 2005, 04:21 PM
Its looking cool, you've got some cool concepts going, awesome!
Cant wait to see where this goes!

05 May 2005, 07:19 PM
Cameron Gardner, the_mighty_m:

Thanks - I know Ive still got lots of work to do!!! :argh: But I am going to get to the finish line!

05 May 2005, 07:26 PM (

More work on the main character.

05 May 2005, 02:13 AM
 Nice concept, I liked your lines too!
Let's start to paint it ! We are short in time but we will do it!
I can visualize your work finished ;)
It will rock!
Thanks for posting.
My best wishes and good luck!

05 May 2005, 06:08 AM (

More work on the line art - and testing a variation on the comp.

05 May 2005, 06:27 AM (

some small additions to the line art

05 May 2005, 06:33 AM
Hey, Gord! I love the anguish in post #37. Great pose and strongest compositon, IMO. I'd love to see you work with that one, but create a stronger link between human and demon. Maybe the demon is holding a voodoo doll or peering at the human through a magic cauldron?

You are right about the stronger link! Thanks!

05 May 2005, 10:44 AM
Hey gordonm: Your concept is really taking fine shape. I especially like the character in the background, in the middle, with the flaming head. Really nice!

Hey as a compositional suggestion, try bringing the character with the flaming head down into the middle of your composition and make him part of the foreground. Then put your two bat like demons upon on the mountains like bookends looking down on him. Compositionally, this will focus the viewer's eye on the flaming head guy and may still maintain your mood. The angle of the mountains tend to draw the viewer's eye downward. Just some food for thought. Time may not be enough to do much more on this though.

Keep up the good work. You've got to really push it to the end now! Best of luck!

05 May 2005, 07:55 PM
I quite liked those hairy brushes on the first page of this thread. I may have to steal yours ;)

The posture on that big chap of your's strong, can't wait to see the colour wip's.

05 May 2005, 11:11 PM
Hello Gordonm

Seems to me your piece is a drama of the mind.
Does not need mountains etc.
Maybe just have your little demon sitting in palm of main figure's hand;
holding up mirror; tormenting big figure with its own image.
Looked in the mirror, saw my enemy and it was me kind of theme.
Maybe have other hand on main figure in a fist ready to break mirror.
Confrontation of one's self theme.

A while back you wondered if just the top half of a figure could be made interesting.
Now's your chance to prove once more that it can be.
Just use those raw emotions that you seem to be so good at.
And you will have a great piece!:)

Just my personal thought and opinion.
Hope it can be of some help to you.
Take care

John Keates
05 May 2005, 12:13 AM
Hey, gordonm,

There is some real drama in that figure and it is interesting the way that they are repeated. I hope to see some more before the deadline.

05 May 2005, 12:38 AM
Hey, how's my favorite greek geek? :D

It's coming along really well, I love the hands of the main character, his pose and his face, everything, you nailed it so well...
... are you going to have time to finish it?! I'm so worried!

.... you still haven't run off to open photoshop?! Go, man!

05 May 2005, 01:10 AM
TMArtist - very good food for thought!

Kargokultti - LOL - hey you've already got my brushes - standard oil brushes in Painter 8 - well thats if you have Painter 8.

Glenn Gallegos - your points are well taken - I have pretty much reached the same conclusion.

John Keates - I am going for broke - I really want to finish this!

Paperclip - Yuk,Yuk :D . I am at the point where photoshop is open 24/7 :bounce: :argh: :bounce: !

05 May 2005, 01:31 AM (

Whew - Finished Line Art - at least as finished as its going to get! Time to hustle on!

05 May 2005, 01:46 AM (

This is a very basic first pass at colour

Robert Longfield
05 May 2005, 02:00 AM
From the way the 'lava' guy is positioned, you would see the other side of his mouth...teeth. Cant wait to see it coloured!

05 May 2005, 03:15 AM (

Just laid in the sky

05 May 2005, 03:17 AM
Robert - thanks!

05 May 2005, 09:32 PM
Hey, Gord! Nothing like working on deadline to get the creative juices flowing!
I know you're just roughing in color now, but I like the texture you've given the sky. Could be flames or storm clouds.

BTW, do you put your backgrounds and characters on separate layers? I only ask because the paint strokes of your sky hug the contour of the man's back. If your background has its own layer you can create a consistent pattern without worrying about painting over the key figure.

Glad to see you back in!

05 May 2005, 09:40 PM
Going on all 4 cylinders now, eh Gord?
I think you should give the lava guy a darker base color, that way you can give him brilliant highlights that will really glow out...
Either way, it's coming along really well!

05 May 2005, 11:46 PM
ILikesoup and paperclip -

glad to see you have dropped by - gets me (more) motivated! :) :bounce: :) .

Ya I am working with lots of layers - there are more layers in my image than hairs on my head - hey wait a minute - I don't have any hairs on my head :D Oh well you get the idea...

I want this guy to be glowing from the inside out!

05 May 2005, 11:52 PM (

I am beginning to work up the colour and also get some volume into the figure

05 May 2005, 01:29 AM (

Still at it - I have been 'spinning my wheels' on the main figure. Man I gotta knuckle down and just nail it!

05 May 2005, 01:50 AM (

modelling and colour - going way too slow!

05 May 2005, 04:28 AM (

more colour work and adding base texture

05 May 2005, 07:05 AM
Keep going on Gord

05 May 2005, 09:31 AM
looking powerful color.
keep up the good work.
thank for ur message.good luck.:)

05 May 2005, 09:42 AM
spacesnail and xric7 - thaks for the encouragement! It really helps, during this final stretch!

05 May 2005, 09:45 AM
Looking good Gord, I think you should brighten up the hands a bit more, give some dramatic contrast against that deep plum sky!

05 May 2005, 09:58 AM
Thanks Theresa - thanks for dropping around!

When all is said and done, I want the central figures, hands and face to carry the image. I want a powerful internal glow - but a glow of rage - not a complacent glow.
(This image is based on the proverb "A wicked man is his own hell") Hopefully I am getting there!

05 May 2005, 11:43 AM
Hey, this version is looking much stronger!
Way to go!

Now, hurry! :)

05 May 2005, 02:43 PM
gordonm: Keep up the good work. It's like one of my art instructors once said, "You've got to keep laying in the color and get rid of all the white space. Once it all gets filled in, the painting starts to materialize." I see that happening here. Just keep going and you'll make it. In the end you'll be better for this experience, with all the time pressure and hurried work. At least that's what I tell myself. Stay focussed. It's worth it! :)

05 May 2005, 03:18 PM
Sonia - Thanks for the encouragement. Whew, still a long way to the finish line!

TMArtist - your advice certainly makes sense! Thanks for the encouragement!

John Keates
05 May 2005, 03:26 PM
Hi Gord,

Nice to see some colour in there. It will be interesting to see how you express his form whilst having him glow (I assume he will glow). It would be a good idea to try and keep the strong drawing of the hands as a central part of the image I think.

05 May 2005, 01:41 AM
put specular effects perhaps or lights effects...good luck!

05 May 2005, 09:08 AM
Interesting coloring. Great concept, Figures are very nice, piece needs more contrast but you already know that:) Keep it up and good luck:)

05 May 2005, 09:37 AM
Oh, I'm glad to see your progress on this. It's coming together nicely, composition wise. I'm still not sure what's going on, but I'm intrigued enough to stick around to find out..:)

much good luck with the challenge.

05 May 2005, 11:44 AM
You must run to finish it!

05 May 2005, 09:27 PM (

More colour - main figure - this is going to be really close!

05 May 2005, 11:45 PM
Interesting idea. Can't wait to see your finished piece. Best wishes to you.

more colour work on the figure

05 May 2005, 05:04 PM

This was such a good topic, and there are so many good works that were created in response to this challenge. My congrtulations to all who finished.
