Doug Williams has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: mastNservFinal (

So here it is. I'm still pretty happy with it, but it's not what I had hoped for. Between wrapping up the game I'm on, buying a house, my daughters first birthday and such, I just didn't have enough time to do what I wanted. Mainly the foreground figures I have issues with. I really wanted them to be more ornate, the hands need some loving too. Well at any rate, I still like it, but hoped it'd be 'more'. Thanks again everyone, all the C&C made this a much better piece.

03 March 2005, 07:46 PM
guuud luck!!

03 March 2005, 07:48 PM (

My first idea. I want to play with the ideas of master and slave. I have people pulling the Godmother (with unborn child) and in a way she's a slave to the standing order of priests trying to create their own god. Just an idea, very loose at this stage.

03 March 2005, 07:51 PM
Bot! Would you get me a new computer please. :P
so far so good.

PS:I thought I just saw Mr. Dixon around here somewhere...this is gonna be fun.

03 March 2005, 07:53 PM
Awe crap. Dixon's om here? He always beats me....I'm doomed ;)

03 March 2005, 07:54 PM
Bot! Would you get me a new computer please. :P
so far so good.

looking good bot!

03 March 2005, 08:04 PM
Excellent! Hello Doug! Hoorah! :)

03 March 2005, 08:09 PM
Hehe - I just saw your name and thought, ' we all be doomed '. Have fun, Doug. Concept sounds very interesting!

03 March 2005, 07:44 AM
looks good so far man good to see ya in the challange are you gonna try out different concepts

good luck ill be watchin

03 March 2005, 06:44 PM (

So here's another. I like this one a lot more. I like that the master servant deal is more ambiguos. Is the God Mother and child serving the clergy, or the other way around. I have a whole story to it in my head. Should be a fun piece to work on. I might start on this concept piece. C&C greatly appreciated!

03 March 2005, 06:57 PM
I really like your mother/child concept. The lighting also is quite beautiful. Keep it up, i'll be watching! :wavey:

Zombie Ninja
03 March 2005, 07:23 PM
Love the new Concept. I am such a huge fan of this style of lighting (Dark foreground light midground). Great mood. Looks like its going to be one awesome piece, I'll def. be watching.
Goodluck! :)

03 March 2005, 09:05 PM
Hey dougbot, I like this new comp better as well. Stronger layout then the one you posted earlier. The God Mother looks much more powerful now as well. Not sure about the Black object to the left that takes up the height of that side. Not sure how well I think that balances out with the right. I am however no authority on layout.

03 March 2005, 09:41 PM
Hey... Now this looks inteeeeeresting...

I had a look bat your site... there's some real nice stuff...

Good luck in the challenge!!

03 March 2005, 10:11 PM
Love it. I'm probably wrong but the mother almost looks Egyptain with the long beard and face. It sort of reminds me of the Queen and Ant thing...I read somewhere that it actually might be the other way around in that the workers in an ant farm actually are the ones who order the Queen.

03 March 2005, 10:15 PM
i like it!

03 March 2005, 10:15 PM
Hey, doug, like how it looks! This new comp is really nice, with the really strong foreground and background planes. I know you're going with a religious theme so is the guy on the left wearing a - whaddaya call those really tall hats? - miters? It just seems a bit too tall, almost comically so, and I suspect that wasn't your intent. Or maybe it IS supposed to be that tall, how should I know, I don't even know their proper name! :-) Anyhow, good luck with it!

03 March 2005, 11:41 PM
I like your new concept more im wonderen what the background will look like is it gnna be like golden walls and the pregnent woman is gonna be a statue that the clergy man is in front of

03 March 2005, 04:10 AM (

Messing around with color. At work...matter of minutes. Hopefully next week I'll get some time to tackle this.

03 March 2005, 04:33 AM
lovely colors! I was waiting for a religion-type entry. :)

03 March 2005, 04:55 AM
Nice lighting, it gave good depth to the peice and provide a really nice mood/backdrop.

03 March 2005, 05:44 AM
your coloring style bring more imotional to image! do u add color to the grayscale value , or paint it again from scratch? ( i mean do u keep grayscale layer above in multiply mode and then add color underneath)

03 March 2005, 05:49 AM
ohhhww~i love the colors and the lighting creates a great sense of mood and enhance the composition:)refresing concept too.i missed this thread previously though and it came out astoundingly.good job

03 March 2005, 05:50 AM
loves the colours you've chosen, it really brings the image to life. keep up the fine work : )

03 March 2005, 05:13 AM
Awesome - love the color and lighting so far, and I'm always a sucker for religious/mythical themes. Can't wait to see this one finished.

03 March 2005, 08:27 PM
i like what youve done with the coloring so far gives it a somber look and puts in my head that aww aww aww song from the cathedrals in the movies ya know what im talkin about

03 March 2005, 06:10 PM (

So I expanded it a bit, pulled some of it apart. Some things I like some I don't. Just glad to have a chance to work on it again, been an insane past few weeks. I'll try to answer some of the above comments later ( I'm at work right now). As always, C&C greatly appreciated.

03 March 2005, 06:26 PM
Looking good Bot!

03 March 2005, 06:30 PM
this picture reminds me of how I looked when I was born.

03 March 2005, 06:32 PM
this picture reminds me of how I looked when I was born.

like a baby?

nice pic, although it does make me feel ill after a while

03 March 2005, 06:36 PM
like a baby?

Yes like a giant glowing baby being worshiped by many

03 March 2005, 06:41 PM
Imagionative, really like the progress. Keep it up :)

03 March 2005, 07:02 PM (

Trying a cropped version that a friend suggested. I'm gonna upload different 3 versions. Most people felt the womans head was too distracting. I tend to agree.

03 March 2005, 07:06 PM (

taller with more tech.

03 March 2005, 07:07 PM (

This might be my favorite. Not sure though. C&C greatly needed! Thanks.

03 March 2005, 07:13 PM
This is looking excellent Doug. I LOVE the concept! The lighting is working well, and I like the beam setting off the reflections! I also think the cathedral-like walls behind are fab. :)

03 March 2005, 07:16 PM
sheer the concept...coming out good.....why do i even bother entering the contest..

03 March 2005, 09:05 PM
Very interesting concept. The only thing I see now that may be a little bit confusing is the sens of depth. The statue seems too close that it really is (if what is in front is a crowd). Anyway, it's still in construction, so my comments may not be so useful. It'll be great I'm sure! :buttrock:

03 March 2005, 11:39 PM (

quick sketch with a new perspective.

04 April 2005, 06:38 PM (

Going to try to get that color back, but was having a hard time using color and painting this scaffolding thing. What are your thoughts?

04 April 2005, 01:45 PM
what a great idea and composition!
I love it. I will keep my eyes on this.
keep it up!

04 April 2005, 01:56 PM
what's up dude,

very cool concept and the lighting is really atmospheric.

My master & servant entry (

04 April 2005, 01:59 PM
god mother 2 was the best in my opinion, the last update has too much matrix goin on, dont get me wrong, it is great, but, too dejavu:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 04:10 PM
very good concept, and very nice line art, i wait the color on this vision, good work

04 April 2005, 04:11 PM
sorry, i don't see your precedent work, the color who are used in this are very beautiful

04 April 2005, 04:35 PM
Interesting concept my friend :) Very unique and an original approach I think. Can't wait to see some colour applied to this concept. I'll check back soon to she how your work progresses.

04 April 2005, 11:48 PM
hey man youre doin great

i think you should use the statue you had in WIP03 and put it into the anotherideasketch cause in my opinion the perspective you had in anotherideasketch was the best and id hate to see the transparent womb statue in WIP03 go.

04 April 2005, 11:23 PM (

So going away from the last image, this is the great worm lord. King of the worms! Should be fun.

04 April 2005, 11:26 PM
Woah sweet composition on latest piece. I like this one more !

04 April 2005, 11:26 PM
wow, thats great, i┤m a fan!! great colors!

keep updating!

04 April 2005, 04:52 PM
Hmmmn....most people don't like my new idea. So maybe I should go with the other. Confused.

04 April 2005, 09:22 PM
this new idea of yours has more action and interest to it and the one with the statue has more feeling to it id have to tell ya to go with the worm king but im also kinda bias toward cool characters and will pass up a good story because of it:shrug:

04 April 2005, 05:48 PM (

attempting another cathedral. Making it more like the catchedral in part of the incubator, not just housing it. A living building if you will ;)

04 April 2005, 06:23 PM
nice! im personally glad you switched back to the baby.

04 April 2005, 06:37 PM
I like the baby concept too. And the architechture is looking great. Maybe a handful of translucent pod things scattered throughout the arches would look good.

Gunstar Hero
04 April 2005, 06:37 PM
I like this latest composition the best, it really has a sense of scale and depth to it, especially with the lone figure in the foreground. Maybe you as you go on you can add some stain glass windows, and how the light coming through them plays of the casing the baby is in. Just an idea. Looking really good though.

04 April 2005, 06:54 PM
Your last concept is very interesting, the best according to me.
Good luck!

04 April 2005, 09:57 PM
WHat's up dude,

Nice. I like this one a lot better than your previous one (although they have some cool designs). you can really feel the enormosity of that incubus or the baby, hehe.

04 April 2005, 10:02 PM
It's a boy! :applause:

Now this is what I call cool looking:bowdown:

04 April 2005, 12:57 AM (

Added some more organic tubing along the top. Glad people seem to like this one.

04 April 2005, 01:08 AM
Lovely, Doug, just lovely.

04 April 2005, 02:16 AM
Hi dougbot, really cool image. I like the background with the cathedral. Great idea, I think that this is the best of all. Keep going.

04 April 2005, 02:34 AM
Very Dune. Best concept so far and I think you should go with this one. A lot can be done with this.

04 April 2005, 08:26 AM
Really great idea !
Personnaly, I would have enlarged the comp on the left side, to have the foetus more centered.
I'll keep an eye on it, good luck !

04 April 2005, 12:28 PM
concept is great ... and you light studies are wonderful as well. keep em commin.

04 April 2005, 11:00 PM
Hey thanks all. I'm glad I came back to this. Sometimes you have to give up and start over. I was actually thinking Dune when I first started working on it. Thanks again.

04 April 2005, 10:11 PM (

So messing around with color during a lull at work. Let me know what you think.

04 April 2005, 10:44 PM
concept is great ... and you light studies are wonderful as well. keep em commin.

i agree... & the sac's really coming to life.

04 April 2005, 11:15 PM
 Wow , looking real nice. The sunrise/sunset mood I like the color. I'll follow up on this one.

04 April 2005, 11:18 PM
Really nice colors, Dougbot! Very warm, very womblike. Might be nice to bring some of those reds into the architecture to make it fit that idea you mentioned earlier of having is be a living building. Nothing else to add, but to keep going. Good luck!

04 April 2005, 11:24 PM
looking really nice, seening all the great pros that are gathering on this
challenge, some times I wonder why I even try he he, looking good
on the colors, nothing worth criticing really, just passing by to tell you
I really dig the picture so far :D

04 April 2005, 11:28 PM
hey looking good man! hope to see you finish this.

04 April 2005, 11:32 PM
Wow! great lightning and color

04 April 2005, 08:07 AM
Looking cool. Love the colours and the lighting. And the sense of scale provided by the foreground fella.

With a baby due in the next ten days, i think i'm seeing it with a whole different outlook than if i'd seen it ten months ago!! :)

04 April 2005, 04:54 PM (

So messing with color some more. I need to add a balcony to the foreground figures. Some things like, some I don' usual.

04 April 2005, 05:14 PM
nice lightning and mood! good luck!

04 April 2005, 05:32 PM
I love the mood, colours and lighting! Good:thumbsup: Good luck!

04 April 2005, 05:36 PM
Whoa! Nice rich colours (very dramatic composition too). Dude, this is wonderfully freakish! LOL. I love it. Keep the updates comin'...

04 April 2005, 05:42 PM
lookinf good douggie!

04 April 2005, 05:43 PM
woo hoo! lookin good bot!

04 April 2005, 07:24 PM
Great concept and colours..the kid is a bit odd..but i can't say what..(i am not referring to his dimensions:) )

04 April 2005, 08:52 PM
The lighting is looking really warm and love the volumetric effect. The left arm of the "baby" looks a little weird at the moment but overall very nice image!

04 April 2005, 10:13 PM
Hey thanks all. I'm glad this one is finally starting to come together. Thanks again.

04 April 2005, 10:22 PM
freaky work!!!

I like your idea, good luck!!!

my master n' servant concept:

04 April 2005, 01:33 AM
nice. the colour and lighting have really brought this to life.

04 April 2005, 01:42 AM
Doug, your work is impressive. 'Watching this... :)

04 April 2005, 08:02 AM
I love much your colors and concept....!

keep posting

cheers: KornÚl

04 April 2005, 09:31 AM
Try more emulate the Sub surface scattering on foetus, with different tones, just have fun..

04 April 2005, 06:46 PM (

So I'm beginning to do some work on the fetus, not much though. I want the fetus to be like a 32 week or later fetus (even though it's been there for years), so it's got some meat on it. I'll be doing a lot to the fetus and sack with color and light.

I also played a bit with a balcony, not much; I just didn't like how they seemed to float there.

Thanks for all the input and kind words, I really appreciate it.

04 April 2005, 07:30 PM
Coming along really nice! Keep going bot!

04 April 2005, 10:54 PM
Hey thanks Xia. Yours is looking really good too.

04 April 2005, 11:06 PM
This is very disturbing, I like it though. I love the lighting. Good Hustle.

04 April 2005, 12:25 AM
Nice work doubotic, this is one of my favourites

04 April 2005, 12:27 AM
I'm very impressed!!! Good job! i'll keep an eye on ya!:buttrock:

04 April 2005, 08:18 AM
I am aware this WIP so this maybe something you'll be getting to shortly but...On the left and right sides of the fetus' head, there are diagonal support beams. These seem to go off perspective. It tends to flaten out the fetus. Perhaps this is just a sketch part of the painting, but I'm not so sure that these are needed. You have some great work coming out of the backwall/ceiling with the tubing and wireing. Just a thought, keep up the good work.

04 April 2005, 10:10 AM
sooo atmospheric. it s great!

04 April 2005, 08:12 PM
Hi, super your painting I had not seen it, in more I adore the cathedral, go, go for the continuation.

04 April 2005, 10:25 PM
nice to see you here dougbot. great light. very lovely image.
cathedral is painted just beautifully. great stuff

04 April 2005, 01:33 AM
O MY GOD! O MY GOD! O MY GOD! THIS IS TOTALLY WICKEDLY AWESOMELY AWEOSME!! cant find words for it... great concept man!!! and i cant take in those lighting... just too good!!... this is my first tym here in ur thread, but i can tell it wont be my last

04 April 2005, 05:41 PM (

Added more meaty tubes at the top. A little more detail to the sack. I agree about those buttress thingies. I pictured the being sloped down, and sort of flat behind the baby, sort of hoping that they'd come off as wings. I'll probably go in and change those. Thanks again all for the critiques and comments. I really appreciate it all.

04 April 2005, 06:20 PM
Nice tubes, I love how they seem to grow up as if they are in place of church organ pipes, and great detail on the top of the sack. Also i'm not sure about the light around the pillar furthest away ( closest to the sack), it makes the pillar look a bit odd. but perhaps i'm wrong

04 April 2005, 07:21 PM
I don't know what I'm more impressed with, the concept or the picture. I love your twist that the developing child isn't ready to assume the role of master, but it's just a matter of time. And everybody is waiting around to be humble servants. I love how the dark robes of the foreground characters stand out against the golden rays streaming into the cathedral.

04 April 2005, 10:34 PM
Hey thanks. I agree with the pillar, actually on both sides. I'll try to tackle those tonight. I'm probably going to hit the buttress 'wings' in the back too. Coming a long so far. Thanks again. I totally appreciate it.

04 April 2005, 10:46 PM
the lighting in this pic is amazing. great colours!

04 April 2005, 12:18 PM
Heh, very original, very good piece. A bit more colour variation in the shadows would help. Good job.

04 April 2005, 12:20 PM
it looks better by the minute.

04 April 2005, 05:58 PM (

Worked on some tubes, lighting and the baby. Brought in some purples. Starting the noodle stage ;) C&C please. Thanks.

04 April 2005, 06:16 PM
Things are looking good. Not much constructive to add, though. I like the purples that you've added to the baby, and hope you'll bring some of them into the pillrs on the far left, too. And I like the lines slanting down towards the baby - they do subtlely read as wings to me, which is a nice touch. And not really much else to add... Just keep 'em coming! :-)

04 April 2005, 06:21 PM
ohhhh! what a cool enviornment, great imagination, such a wide space, the crowd at the bottom of the baby looks very good! great comp

good luck

04 April 2005, 07:30 PM
Hey thanks you two. Yeah I realy debated getting rid of the wings, to the point that they were gone for awhile. I ended up keeping them though. I'll bring in more purples and such. I like pulling those in a lot.

04 April 2005, 10:56 PM
rocket grenade man, rocket grenade!

in other words, love the nice soft touch of purple in the latest update, feels like a warm summers evening breeze across my nipple.

04 April 2005, 11:05 PM
ya man! the sense of depth add a very powerful feel to the image. and the warm colors help to define the characters' attitude. I salute you!!!

04 April 2005, 12:28 AM
Hey TheMagnetic, you work at amaze? I have freinds there. It's a great company. I'm actually over at Small world. Thanks for the compliments.

05 May 2005, 07:09 PM (

Wow...I'm cutting it close. Our game just shipped (Guild Wars), so I finally had some free time (well...all that have a 11 month old daughter allows). Added some purples, cleaned up a bit. Starting to gel.

05 May 2005, 07:41 PM
It started to gel a long time ago. Nice work man.

05 May 2005, 09:25 PM
Hey thanks. I always have issues with my stuff.

05 May 2005, 10:15 PM
If you're already on 'Final Coloring,' you're not really 'cutting it close' with 3 weeks left, even if you do take a week of for E3! And certainly not as close as you cut it last challenge! :)
Your piece is looking nice, and congrats about Guild Wars, too. I'm assuming isn't too large - say hi to Jason Wiggin for me, if he's still there. Are you going down to E3 this year?

anyhow, looking good!

05 May 2005, 10:43 PM
Hey thanks Walrus, on both my piece and GW. Yeah, I actually work in the same room with Wiggin. He says hi, he'll be at E3, but I sadly shall not. Thanks again.

05 May 2005, 11:54 PM
Wow,cool stuff,really nice,well done.:buttrock:

05 May 2005, 06:57 AM
good luckkkk....

05 May 2005, 10:30 AM
this pic is very great, i like the concept and the realization. The choice of color is always very good, and the work on the lighting is impressive. Good work

05 May 2005, 10:57 AM
Another great entry! I like that one a lot, specially coz of those warm colors and ambient light. Good luck!

05 May 2005, 01:08 PM
Real nice entry. Love the lighting and atmosphere

05 May 2005, 10:12 AM
Good job Doug! Very interesting design and I like the sense of scale in this painting. Best of luck!

05 May 2005, 12:36 PM
Come on, Doug! I can't wait to see this finished!

It's looking really good - great sense of scale and those purples really set off the rich orange tones. Looking forward to your final.

05 May 2005, 01:18 PM
What about an idea of adding a couple of candles arouding the base of the child? It would make additional spiritual feeling, I think.

05 May 2005, 05:39 PM
Okay, never mind, I take it back, you ARE cutting it close!
If nothing else, you can upload it as is and it'd be good. But I like pejot's idea about the candles, and maybe the front human's hands sould use a little more refining. Just make sure you upload it no matter what!

I'll definately be by the GW booth this week to check it out, and to hook up with Jason. Sorry you're not going to make it... Just make sure you make it for this! :)

05 May 2005, 07:00 PM (

So here it is. I'm still pretty happy with it, but it's not what I had hoped for. Between wrapping up the game I'm on, buying a house, my daughters first birthday and such, I just didn't have enough time to do what I wanted. Mainly the foreground figures I have issues with. I really wanted them to be more ornate, the hands need some loving too. Well at any rate, I still like it, but hoped it'd be 'more'. Thanks again everyone, all the C&C made this a much better piece.

05 May 2005, 07:03 PM
i can relate to that dude, but this come out great, simple but conveys the message, jst the right atmsophere & details... congratulations for the final image!!

05 May 2005, 07:47 PM
whoa! doug! you did a fab job on this - my biomed mind is most pleased with the beauty of your full term fetus. creepy as all get out too - bonus!

05 May 2005, 08:37 PM
Original, great colors!Good luck :)

05 May 2005, 10:12 PM
I don't think I've seen this before, but it looks awesome! Perspective and light is great, and the theme is interesting too.

05 May 2005, 05:30 AM
wow, what a wonderfull piece, love the mood, the design simply rocks! best of luck on the finals and congrats on you beautifull final piece!
