Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Coloring WIP: DollMaster WIP 06BW (

Turn on Grayscale to check my value. I think this should give me enough range to work on at higher level of detail.

03 March 2005, 07:43 PM
Well here's a thread that should be interesting to watch. All the best, Xia..!

03 March 2005, 07:45 PM
yeh i checked out ur site,now i can't wait.
lets see sumthin!!

03 March 2005, 05:46 PM (

This is the first sketch that comes to mind as soon as I have an idea how to go about. She is a doll-maker witch. She capeture any lost soul and enslave/imprison it in her dolls. Then they become her slaves for eternity.
The lil\' thumbnail on the side is another quick idea for a more dramatic piece and different composition of the same subject just in case I change my mind on this one.

03 March 2005, 05:51 PM
wow loooking great!!

03 March 2005, 05:52 PM (

After I look a the image for a while, I decided...I want a creepy looking approach to the piece. The sketch might not help me achieve that because it's too stylize.
So I thought what if I push it to be a bit more realistic, then I doodle a more realistic human facial and put them together. Yeah, this will make it more creepy than it was.

03 March 2005, 05:54 PM
wow..looking great x 2

03 March 2005, 05:55 PM
Great start!

I love the look of this character~! I personally perfer the stylized one, but that is just a preferance, they are both great approaches. I'll check back soon, you want to know how your piece progresses. Take care.

03 March 2005, 05:55 PM
ooOOooh... this looks reeeeally interesting... the little dolls are fantastic!! I dunno whether i prefer the stylised look or the more realistic, so i'll watch while you experiment!!

I'm gonna be following this for sure!!

03 March 2005, 05:56 PM
interresting approach...good luck! and can't wait to see more.

03 March 2005, 05:57 PM
Yeah I checked your website out too... VERY COOL!! Can't wait to see what you do with this.
Good luck Xia.

NOOB: Thanks buddy! :)

Now I am looking at the overall compsition and how I am going to crop it and where do I assign the value or setup lighting. here it is so far. Everything seems to piece together though I might change my mind later.

Note: All the dolls in the piece place as mark ups for the composition, I will have to redesign each one later. they should have more personality than they are now.

To all of you: Thanks that was quick! :)

03 March 2005, 06:01 PM

i'm luving the mood,i'll keep watching!

03 March 2005, 06:07 PM
Xia, this is fabulous! Original idea and looking great already! I have no preference for either the realistic one or the stylised one, as in the end it's the dolls that wig me out, and it feels great! Heh!

03 March 2005, 06:16 PM
she's at the same time beautiful and wicked~~great job on the the idea of it:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 06:27 PM
i like the idea and the look of this piece as well and i think that more realistic approach will make it more creepy
good luck to you

03 March 2005, 08:05 PM
charactor is stylize , I like it , and lighting is great too , more update please!

03 March 2005, 09:04 PM
Love it. The colour scheme's great, and your idea is a great interpretation of the topic. I think the realistic face makes for a much stronger piece, reinforcing that the girl is a living entity while the dolls are not, which makes me wonder why she's been crying...

Creepy. Danny Elfman would so be writing the theme tune for this pic.

03 March 2005, 09:39 PM
The colours give it an even creepier edge... but the thing i love best is the face son the dolls...

All very spoooooky...

03 March 2005, 10:46 PM
Hey, Xia, really beautiful concept and sketches so far. and the rough color is just gorgeous. I really like the face on the witch herself, and the level of realism to it. I don't mind the dolls being more cartoony because, like Matt said, they're not living. But some of them, like the girldoll with the two knives, for me are on the verge of being too goofy and comical. It seems counter to the mood of th rest of the piece, so that part isn't working as well for me. But I can't wait to see where you go with the rest of it. Good luck!

03 March 2005, 11:01 PM
Hi there, this is a great concept, lovely sketches. I really like the creepy feel you're going for, it works really well. Has she been crying or is it blood running down her face?

Anyway, I'm curious how this turns out, good luck and have fun!

03 March 2005, 11:05 PM
Nice to see you here XIA!!
Go go go! looks awesome.

Maybe I should enter too:)

Goro (Mitsui)

03 March 2005, 12:27 AM
Can't say much that hasn't already been said...I'm going to be wathcing this thread closely. You're work is always an inspiration to me. Good Luck!!!:)

03 March 2005, 03:08 AM
I adore your lines! very interesting...I reallly love this one! *I'm a sucker for dolls, plushies and pretty dresses lately* My critique at this point is that I think a bit more of headspace would be nice- more space between the top of the piece and the candles too. I would move the pig a bit up (so it's head is not lost) and add that extra space cut from the bottom to the top...of course this is only a suggestion, just play with it! ;-)

03 March 2005, 09:09 AM
Thank to all you guys for the warm welcome and kind words. I am really glad you like the piece and the idea behind it.

Matt Dixon, Walrus>> Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Now I felt more comfortable going with the approach. BTW: I am listening to Danny as we speak, Love his tune...great while working on painting and stuff.

Walrus>> Thanks. Agree, she will be changed.

RudeOne>> You could say that...yes it is blood running down her face.

Oz Haver>> Thanks, I will think about it but as of now the poor piggy will be left like that because I don't think he will need much attention in the piece. He serves as a starting point to lead your eyes in from the corner to the focal point. If everything is in full form and full render...where would you eye stop?

Hopefully, I will get to work on it a little bit more tonight so I can update somethin somethin later in the day.

Peace and good luck to you all.

03 March 2005, 09:53 AM
Wow!!! It looks promising! Nice concept from you. I'll keep watching it! Goooood luck.:applause:

03 March 2005, 09:56 AM
Woah O_O !!!

03 March 2005, 05:52 PM (

More variation sketches for doll. Trying to find the direction I want. I think the one with the knife is pretty close to what I am looking for.

03 March 2005, 05:57 PM (

Have a little bit of time last night so I pick something around the focal point to work on....this part will actually help me set up the value pallete for the over all piece

03 March 2005, 05:59 PM (

And here is how it look so far...Hopefully I can get to work on it some more this weekend.

03 March 2005, 06:03 PM
Hahaha... love it!!

That page of sketches is great!! And the doll with the knife is one of the creepiest dolls i ever did see!!

03 March 2005, 06:23 PM
Wow, this is creepy

I like alote

03 March 2005, 06:25 PM
Wow! creepy as hell, but stunningly beautiful!

03 March 2005, 06:54 PM
The lighting is great. Definately gives it a very spooky ambience. The candles really intensify that effect.

03 March 2005, 06:59 PM
Sinister  .... love it!! :bounce: :D

would be interesting if she were to look directly at the viewer, as if to say your soul is next :scream: :D

03 March 2005, 07:03 PM
Wow... that doll is spookeee! I think your palette for this is cool too. The russets and browns give it a slight feeling of Victoriana, and the candles hark back to a sort of twisted Christmas... :)

03 March 2005, 07:11 PM
that is one freaky doll!!

03 March 2005, 07:12 PM
wow! I really like what I'm seeing! really nice work

03 March 2005, 07:40 PM
cool concept and nice drawings by the way. I think this is the most original concept I have seen so far. I can not wait to see your picture finished.
good luck.

03 March 2005, 08:05 PM
Looking great so far. I don't know what the things are in the foreground, I'll check back later :)

03 March 2005, 11:28 PM
very cool xia, i really enjoy the lighting on the pic. and man thats dolls creepy!

03 March 2005, 11:32 PM
hello xia ! its starting well , good luck to you !

03 March 2005, 02:53 AM
WOW nice work! I like color and lighting a lot. I can't wait to see more update :)

03 March 2005, 02:58 AM
I love the lighting, though I do wonder where it eminates from. If that could be shown then it would be a better piece. To me it looks as if it is coming from a candle.

03 March 2005, 05:35 AM
just discovered this thread.... very original.. loving the concept. she looks like alanic morrisette a No crits.

03 March 2005, 06:20 AM
great concept, good call on changing the face, definitely more haunting.. lovely painting so far too, can't wait to see it done!

03 March 2005, 06:45 AM
I like the concept, it's really creepy... Looks great so far, with nice dramatic light source on the doll. Look forward to the progression. :buttrock:

03 March 2005, 07:08 AM
Interesting idea for a witch. Dolls are always creepy. I don't know...I know it's been said already, but I'm not sure about the tears. Or is she some compulsive witch and she does all this evil because she can't control herself? ...So it makes her sad....

Also, the glow behind the doll in the foreground--again,said before--what's it coming from? Oh I know! a night-light! JK But seriously, from a design perspective, it helps a lot, but it's just a glowy wall at this point. What's the light-source? It seems an odd place for a candle to be sitting.... On the floor at the hem of her dress...NOT SAFE!

Anyway, looking good so far.

03 March 2005, 07:21 AM
Oh, I am just loving the way this is going. The expression on that doll is perfect. Almost makes it look like the dominant character in the scene, particularly with the girl looking quite distant, which makes for an interesting twist.

03 March 2005, 02:17 PM
great concept ! i like the atmosphere , it's deep .:)

03 March 2005, 07:23 PM (

Got a few hours to work on it last night. A little bit of progress.

Thank for all the C&C.

03 March 2005, 07:26 PM
WOW! looking very nice!

03 March 2005, 07:50 PM
I cheer on you. Like everything here of your works

03 March 2005, 08:04 PM
beautifully haunting imagry... I LIKE! Really can't wait to see you develop this... keep up the amazing work!

03 March 2005, 08:12 PM
It's looking really good. Not much I'd change, to be honest. Yes, the red thread - maybe some stuffing coming out instead, although it might be a bit difficult to tell what it is. Anyhow, nice job.

03 March 2005, 08:15 PM
Wow, I think that new doll works really well. And like Baron said, that read thread coming from the arm... Subtle, and nice! Will there be anything weird or twisted about the doll that the witch is holding? anyhow, this is just gorgeous work, and one of my favorites so far. Good luck with it, it's coming along great!

03 March 2005, 09:52 PM
Beautiful lights there friend! Love how you stuck to your dollmaster concept all the way! I haven't managed to choose yet.

keeping an eye on this one!

03 March 2005, 12:51 AM

I love the concept for this one and I can't wait to see it closer to polish.

03 March 2005, 05:20 AM
i very much love the concept i will be comming back to see more updates.

great work thus far.

03 March 2005, 07:11 AM
the composition is beautiful!! i love the color scheme, it gives the painting a nostaljic look. :)

her faces is very pretty. but when i look at her body, she looks like a small girl, and when i look at the face, she looks like an adult. which one is she gonna be?

best of luck!!!

03 March 2005, 06:07 PM
yeeah, this IS a bit creepy. really nice colours and light going on. dolls are looking cool and the girl's face is very well done.

03 March 2005, 08:25 PM
doll is always a great theme. I like how this is turning out. can't think of any crits. the red thread representing blood works for me. i wouldn't change it to some other color. keep it up!

03 March 2005, 08:33 PM
Scarry and elegant ciaroschuro...! :applause:

03 March 2005, 12:46 AM
I love the concept and the idea. the lighting makes is more freakier, very cool.

 my master & servant 2D (

03 March 2005, 01:37 PM

The shadow and lighting are giving a very realist quality to hte scene, specially on the doll┤s head...a high contrast too! cangratulations for this state of the art.

03 March 2005, 01:39 PM
This is going to be creepily beautiful when its finished. I think it would make an awesome 3d animation!

03 March 2005, 02:34 PM
heeey i knew this seamed familiar, i saw ur earlier works, and i always liked them, great job:applause:

03 March 2005, 06:46 PM (

Thanks for all the comment guys, really appreciated. I didn't really know if my idea would apply in the beginning, it seems out there.

I had some time to work on it a lil bit last night. As you can see I am working around the focal area, the rest I just let it be loose at this stage. I this point I could care less about fine detail, and such. I am trying to maintain the value of the picture as a whole, getting the porpotion right, and create interesting composition. I am trying to make the piece as painterly as I could, and throw the extreme realist out the window. Notice that things change around the picture as I go whatever comes to mind as it fits the composition at time. Enjoy.

03 March 2005, 06:48 PM
still looking greatastic!

03 March 2005, 06:51 PM
good sketching.....i will keep an eye on this thread...keep up the good work

03 March 2005, 07:17 PM
Is that actually blood coming out of the dolls arm, or is it a cotton thread!! :D Working extremely well on loads of levels...

04 April 2005, 03:58 AM
Its coming great!! looking foward to see your evolution! great job!

04 April 2005, 04:30 AM
you're doing a great job. that doll master is amazing. keep the good working.
i'll be waiting for new ups

04 April 2005, 04:57 AM
Really lookin good XIA, its burning eyes from ca., not that u know me. Anyways crits would be well, not much, I would like to see it tightened up a bit, the thing I noticed with some of your work is the more painterly feel you try to achieve sometimes doesnt work because the strokes themselves have a few values in them. This is what I recall anyways. Maybe you could try to use 100% opacity, and then go back and blend what you want, just a suggestion, you dont have to take it into consideration, just thought it might work. Good luck!

04 April 2005, 01:13 PM
looking really good! Very good colors, composition and mood

04 April 2005, 09:12 PM
very cool work so far, that master's a dolls nightmare :P Like your work, and just cam to subscrbe, wish ya best luck and loadsa fun. cheers:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 09:17 PM
Very nice concept. I like the image and the development so far. Keep it up!
As far as your idea fitting into the challenge, I think it does and it's very original.
Nice work!

04 April 2005, 03:17 PM
Hi Xia! Abosolutely great work! This challenge is going to be though! I like the ambience of your composition a lot. About the foreground doll I prefer the one who has the knife. I mean, it has the idea of a servat who is going to carry out the order of the master. In your last image she has no arms so this sensation is lost.
Cant wait to see more! I'll be aorund looking!

04 April 2005, 05:43 PM
Ah, good, another update, I'm always looking forward to seeing what you've done on this. The asian mask for the servant doll in the background is really creepy. It reminds me of the masks from Terry Gilliam's film 'Brazil,' which were also creepy. Both in a good way. :-) I do think Kaparo has a good point about the knife, though I would miss the red thread on the broken arm... Maybe she can have just one arm? Hmm, maybe not, it might then look like she cut her own arm off. Well, anyhow... Can't wait to see more, I love this piece so far!

04 April 2005, 12:06 AM

This looks creepy! I love it! The colors beautiful and particularly the textures look great.
I┤m looking forward to watch this thread. The line art of the characters are stunning.

looking good

04 April 2005, 02:20 PM
 I like the where this is going. The lighting on the picture makes it creepy, just what you were looking for. The dolls all look ready to head their masters comand. Cool man.

04 April 2005, 05:18 PM
Thank for all the C&C guys. It's great to get feedback from you guys so I can fix or get more idea for the piece.

Thanks again. Hopefully I can pull this off. And yes! it is time to update again, huh.

04 April 2005, 05:24 PM (

I got some more time to work on it on the weekend, progress quite a bit. I refined the witch a little bit more, still not too happy with the skin tone. I will need to do second pass or third pass on her...then that should be it, hopefully. Three of the dolls which dominate the front is almost there. For those of you who think I should put the knife back, I agree with you all. Instead of the big knife, I put an old school razor blade there. It is a little less threatening but I am alway have big fear of the super sharp little razor blade. And the size seems to be more appropriate to the doll.

04 April 2005, 05:43 PM
thats looking so great,keep goin!!

04 April 2005, 06:00 PM
Great face Xia; there's a lot of subtlety in it! The doll's workiong really well. It looks like it cut off its own arm... or is that the intention?

04 April 2005, 06:21 PM
great mood! looking beautiful!

04 April 2005, 07:43 PM
Love the little girl face, so creepy
Very Nice work, man!

04 April 2005, 09:57 PM (

Some CU.

04 April 2005, 10:01 PM (

More first pass on the witch CU, I just have to be very subtle on this one otherwise she will compete with the main Freaky doll. It's getting there.

04 April 2005, 11:26 PM
this is excellent, it has to take one of the prizes
ill follow this one just cos i like the way you paint. gl and well done! :)

04 April 2005, 11:34 PM
it's coming along great!
There is something about her face though...some anatomy problems there I guess...
I just can't figure out what it is..
Mayber her eyes are placed just a bit too high (maybe only her right eye)

The skintones look great....kind of creepy:)

looking forward for the next update

04 April 2005, 06:49 AM
wussup bro, looking good and creepy. start cutting out some good shapes into the piece, its a little bit too soft and fuzzy right now, is my only crit.

that a buy me a muffin.

04 April 2005, 07:10 AM
I love this idea! And the contrast between the dolls and the realistic treatment of the witch!!

Nothing to crit... just wanted to add another comment!

Cool stuff...

i think its more to do with her head not being positioned properly on the neck.

btw. great image.

04 April 2005, 08:15 AM
Wow very cool. I can't wait to see more.

04 April 2005, 09:56 AM
The woman's head look a little bit bigger and is a little bit higher than normal. And in this position the neck doesn't seem to be connected to the head.
But the atmosfear rocks!

04 April 2005, 10:05 AM
freaky... great atmospheric gives the feels so good!

04 April 2005, 10:44 AM
not much to say.. i love the creepy atmosphere - the colors are just perfect :)

i┤ll keep an eye on this!

04 April 2005, 10:54 AM
what's up dude,

Looking really nice. Just a couple of things for the proportion of your female character, her right arm is a bit long and i agree with AMBIENT-WHISPER about the positioning of the head on her neck. But everything else loosk great. Colours are great and it contributes to the whole feeling of creepiness... love it.

04 April 2005, 08:54 PM (

I haven't had time to work on it much. Preoccupied with other stuff, and spending more than four to six hours in a painting wear me out. Anyway, I pretty much changed the light source of the image. I was trying to solve the circular light source and focal point, so I have to get a rid of the fire from the fire place. Now I can have warm light from the back and natural moonlight (cool light) from the window (environment). I believe this would work out better as a whole composition. Also I tweaked the witch poportion here and here to mak it a lil more realistic than the one I began with. From here on out, lot of tweaking, fixing and Cleaning up...hopefully I can get it done the way I anticipate this time.

Thanks for all the C&C. Lots of great work poping out! I am excited.

04 April 2005, 08:57 PM
looks excellent,luv the lighting!

04 April 2005, 09:02 PM
This is looking awesome... too bad you had to lose the fire in the fireplace (I like fire!) but the current lighting works really well. Very creepy atmosphere... did I mention that dolls and puppets freak me out?

Keep up the great work. Cheers!

04 April 2005, 09:02 PM
Excellent. I love the ambience you have in the scene, I think the lighting works really well. And as for the central doll character....quality. Great work

04 April 2005, 01:09 AM (

Got lost in the woods for a while. Now I am back...trying to figure how to make the piece more interesting. Drapery! Yes..I start to do some quick markup for the drapery on her dress, and now I am excited to work on it again. Looking up at lots of old master painting...trying to figure out how it's done. We'll see how it goes.
I replace the knife with the whip because I wanted to add some movement into the piece...loosen up some dullness. Now I am trying to beat up the scene(back drop)...hopefully it will work out.
The pig is gone so that I have to deal with less element...easier the tide everything together.
Few hours worth of thinking and actual painting...thanks for all the support and enjoy!

04 April 2005, 04:19 AM
Very good idea. Great work until here. The atmosphere is really amazing.

04 April 2005, 05:43 AM
man, I have missed so much from this thread...I really like the whip idea, more relative...
btw just to add more size to your ego :D... great freaking piece(colours, details, lighting, and everything else)...

04 April 2005, 06:31 AM
yup. interesting work. will be watching this thread. cheeers

04 April 2005, 06:39 AM

best regards: KornÚl

04 April 2005, 08:35 AM
This entry is coming along, I really love the lighting on the dolls face, its awesome, really well done!

04 April 2005, 09:45 AM
Oh my ! That's my favourite entry here !
I love that kind of opressive atmosphere flowing out even if I prefered the knifed one ^^

04 April 2005, 11:56 AM
Good ambiance! good feeling! it's a nice work!:) you shoul perhaps make the woman a little more in your sketch..maybe you are working on...good luck!!

04 April 2005, 01:20 PM
Sweet! I just love those colors and atmosphere, great work so far. Keep workin'

04 April 2005, 01:30 PM
i love this so much.. nothing o crit becuae everything is perfect.. atmosphere, anatomy, idea everthing... the girl even looks like jennifer connely which is a bloody good thing!

04 April 2005, 02:23 PM
Ah, great to see you've updated this again. Your is one of my favorite entries, so I want to see you make it to the finish line! :-)

I like some of your changes a lot. The candles and the more moody lighting works really well. I love how the witch's face is more shadowed around the eyes. The new dress design is good, too.

The whip isn't working for me. I can understand the desire to add more motion to the piece. I don't think it was needed - i liked that it was a quiet and spooky scene and the wide, staring gaze of the front doll was creepy all by itslef without adding the whip. But on top of that, the whip is moving... but the doll isn't. You kept her body and arm in the exact same position that it had when just holding up a knife menacingly. If you really want to sell the motion, you might want to consider completely repainting her body in a pose that conves the mid-motion of cracking a whip. Body tensed, arm stretching, wrist snapping. You don't do that without effort from your whole frame.

Lastly, while I don't mind that you removed the pig, I feel like the setting is diminished by the loss of so many dolls. If this is a witch who animates dolls, having more dolls all around - in piles, on the mantlepiece, etecetera - helps to get that point across. Having only a few dolls gets further away from your point. Having the doll-pile in the lower right also helped round out that corner and guide the eye back into the page compositionally. Now all the dress lines - especially that one crease - are leading the eye right off of the page.

Anyhow, hope you don't mind my pointing these things out. I do really like your piece a heck of a lot, and want to see the best it can be. I know it's going to be great!
Best of luck!

Here is the final draft, value, color scheme before I go in and do more detail work within.

04 April 2005, 06:33 PM (

Turn on Grayscale to check my value. I think this should give me enough range to work on at higher level of detail.

04 April 2005, 06:33 PM
excellent can't wait for detailing!

Great work! Perhaps I would drop those two candles in the back on the wall giving more focus to the lady's face and preventing the viewer's eyes to wander off the frame.

Looks fantastic! The value is great I think and colors in previous versions works relly well with the theme. But here and there I woul like to see some more defined shapes, more sharpness or something... but than this is just my opinion and personal taste. Its a very good pic!

This has got to be one of the creepiest entries in the challenge. The wierd thing is it works brilliantly in grayscale, its got an almost film noir kind of quality. Its an absolutely brilliant piece of work. The lighting, the mood, the expression on the girl's face, the doll with the knife, its terrific! I cant wait to see more updates of this. Please keep it going.

Check out mine and let me know what you think : (http://showthread.php/?t=234420)

All feedback very appreciated!!
