Latest Update: Modeling: expressions (

A few days dropped again, I think I won't make it... a small update anyway, the expressions for the family members.

03 March 2005, 11:56 AM
Ok, now it's no time to hesitate, I have to enter the challenge :) Maybe won't be able to finish but who cares, first try...
I have two basic ideas now, still have to develop'em. First is a child's room, toys all around, many of them broke or "heavily used", a teddy bear in focus, rumpled, scared face, hidden behind some furniture, and the kid's approaching to play again some nasty games
The other one probalby just stays an idea, won't be enough time to make it. It's a chess table, from the point of view of the figures, final steps, just a few pieces left on the table, and the figures are in fighting positions with distorted expressions on their faces. The chess player has similar expressions, his face can be seen just above/behind the figures.
Well, ideas written, time to do some work on it...

03 March 2005, 12:08 PM
Good luck!
I hope that you pick the chess table idea, I like that one. :)

Ciao Balazs,

Udvozlet kis hazankbol! Sok sikert a CGTalkon!
Welcome from our small country(Hungary) and good luck at CGTalk.

Snowflake: It's not decided yet, I prefer the teddybear stuff, now I try to make sketches for both and I'll see what comes out :)

Tremoside: Thank you for the nice words, I'll do my best :)

03 March 2005, 06:01 PM
Curiously waiting for it. :)

03 March 2005, 10:46 AM
Bad news :(

03 March 2005, 01:30 PM
Damn... that means there's no point for me to develop this idea, right? He even has the same arrangement on his sketch what I was thinking about, the difference is I wanted to focus more on the hiding teddybear... Ok, then I have to take the chess thing, or to find out something else...

03 March 2005, 01:34 PM
True, true.
I liked the chess idea anyway, so go for it, it sounds great. :)

03 March 2005, 01:36 PM
Uhhh... what do you think, I'm late again??

03 March 2005, 08:28 AM
No, I guess you're not late yet. AS far as I understand your chess table idea (watching the player from the figures' perspective), it is not the same I saw there. :)

03 March 2005, 02:26 PM (

This is just a rough sketch to show the idea, not quite good, the perspective should be more from the figures' view. tomorrow I'll make this in 3d with simple objects to clear up the composition.

03 March 2005, 02:39 PM
Keep it up Balazs! Just think of your workflow. Concept_references_models_textures_poses of figures_lightwork_composition_render

You can collect references from the internet if you need some inspiration. And that will really helpful for modeling. Bests,

03 March 2005, 02:53 PM (

The concept in 3d, I like it better. I noticed the other guy I draw was left-handed, so I changed it :) The player will have the exact same head as the figure in his hand, showing the "empathy" of the player (maybe not the right word, while he's playing he feels to be the figure). The cylinders are the other figures, the closest one will be the defeated king.

03 March 2005, 02:56 PM
Thank you Tremo, now I'll search for some references for the old player guy, just wanted to have the basic look of the whole scene :)

04 April 2005, 10:35 AM
Hi Balázs!

Your idea looks good.:arteest:
Is the figure have a sword?
And the other figures will have same face expression?

Good luck!

04 April 2005, 12:02 PM
Thanks SaintT :) Yep, the figure has a sword, this is the moment of the final move, when the enemy is beaten. Maybe the figure will have other kind of weapon, I'll decide later :) The player's expression will be only on the figure in his hand, becouse that's the "winning figure". Maybe the other figures on his side will have the same face too... but the opponent's figures won't.

04 April 2005, 12:37 PM
I had thought about doing something very similar to this idea, but then thought someone else must have already chosen this concept so I tried to come up with something else, and it looks like I was right. Good luck!

04 April 2005, 01:43 PM
That was the same case for me with the little girl and the teddy bear, someone took it before... but that was a good occasion to find a better one :)

04 April 2005, 10:49 AM (

Didn't post for a loooong time, had enormous amount of work, but I hope I'll have time to finish (begin?) the image.
I changed the concept because I think the other one wasn't interesting enough, and someone else got the same idea again..
Sooo the new one! The scene is a living room, christmas time, midnight already passed, mother, father and child visible. The kid got some Construct-O-Matic-if-you-aren't-5-years-old-you-will-never-make-it type of present, naturally it's the father's job to put it togehter (err yes the present isn't visible on the concept image, but imagine ;o) Mother already kicked out, sleeping, but still has an assembly guide in hand... Father's still struggling, almost finished. The kid's watching the whole scene, dunno yet if he'll be excited (versus the others' fatigue) or annoyed. Xmas tree, other presents, some papers with construction plans and calculations all around. That's it, I begin the modelling part!

04 April 2005, 11:10 AM
Hmm, good concept and a lot more subtle than most (as regard's the Master and Servant theme).

Hope you can start and finish. I'm in the same boat, only started modeling. These two month challenges are going to be tough.

04 April 2005, 01:35 PM (

Still looking for references for the characters, but had a few minutes so I refined the furniture a bit...

Thank you, I think I started it now, so the only problematic part is the finishing :)

Hi Balazs,

Thanks for your comments! Yes, this new concept is more interesting than the other one was, now time turn it into an image. Wish you lotsa power and time :buttrock: Keep it comin!

04 April 2005, 04:10 PM (

As it's clearly visible, this is my first head ever (what will be completed), but I'm working hard on it :o) c&c welcome!

04 April 2005, 12:13 PM (

I tweaked the head a bit, but still not satisfied with the result. So I decided to post it and ask for your cruel critics :o) Honestly, feel free to comment it.
First problem I noticed now, lack of lower lid...and maybe something's wrong with the proportions...

05 May 2005, 03:28 PM (

I checked a lot of photos and live heads :o), and I hope now I turned the baby-doll head to a better one. I'm satisfied with it, although it took much more time to make it then I wanted. I hope I'll finish the other ones much faster. As always, I'd like to know your opinion about it.

05 May 2005, 12:50 PM (

Finally father's head here.. I'm way more satisfied with this then the other one. Big thanks goes to BlackDidThis for his fantastic gif tutorials, I understood now that less polys works better :o)) I think I'll refine the mother's head, too.

05 May 2005, 03:22 AM
Lol... Thank you for the generous mention. But you are the one who is doing the modeling here :)

Things are going good as I can see.

There is one thing though. I am sure you have probably noticed the mode being a bit 'cornered' A bit rectangular.
Well that is a hard thing to round out at times until you get used to it. But until you do, inserting a sphere inside where the crannium should be on the head, could be a helpful refference to pull your vertices according to.
Just an idea.

Soo you have one more head to go?
Well looking great, GOOD LUCK!

note.. almost forgot. Arround the page you got the giff's from was a link to a tutorial from Dave(AKA; The HobbitGuy) that showed me the idea of extruding out. It might help take you one step more further :)

05 May 2005, 03:45 AM
Hi Balazs,

Second head is better, it has more character appearance. You can also search some tutorials at ( and some video tutorials at ( check those and you will fine easy solutions. Best luck,

05 May 2005, 07:42 AM
Thank you for the tips, actually I'd like the head to be cornered, but not as much as now, so I'll try out that helpful spehere :) To tell the truth I didn't take fully your approach, I mean I didn't start with exporting, but the good old box thing, and after a few refinements I checked your way of forming the parts of the head :) I found Hobbitguy's tutorial, too, maybe I'll try this process later on...

You're absolulty right, I was more lucky with the second head to give him some character, somehow the female one looks "empty" I think I was refining her too much before giving some character to the face, and afterwards it was already wrong.. now I'm working on that head again.

Thank you all for your constructive comments, you're always wellcome!
A few words about the characters, I'm sure you know the style of the cocacola ads from the 50's-60's, I'd like to make that kind of characters, and also the final look of the whole scene will be like those painted images (actually I'd like it to be like that, we'll see if I can make it :) ) Time is really short now, so have to push it harder :buttrock:

05 May 2005, 10:53 AM (

Cheeeese (One of the expressions for father's face :) )

05 May 2005, 07:46 PM
the smile looks very good. I don't know how ralistic you want to go for... but if such; you may want to pull the cheekboes a very little bit more when you have a smile as big as that! =D

The head is going really good. I get what you mean by "wanting a style such". I hadn't thought it such :(
Well now it looks alot better! And stylised ;)

05 May 2005, 02:49 PM
Thanks for the comments and kind words :) Well, I don't want to be toooooo realistic (lol, I'll try to make as realistic as I am able to do  ), anyway becouse of the style on the final image, too little details won't be visible. About the smile you're right, I'll corect it. I've added some details, I'll upload it with the other expression soon...
