View Full Version : Master and Servant 2D Entry: Ryan Frederickson

Ryan Frederickson has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: In Honor of the King (

As a servant, the Jester (joker, clown, fool--whatever you like to call him) is supposed to be the funny entertainer, but he's often thought of as being dangerous and creepy. I decided to use that ironic psycological interpretation literally in this piece.

At first the concept was pretty straight-forward. The jester has killed the king and sits on the throne. But after more thought on the subject I decided that wasn't enough. I wanted to make the master/servant relationship deeper than simple betrayal. So I thought...what if the jester was a master as well? And I made him the instigator of this happy coup.

....Or is it happy? I wanted to make the characters seem somewhat ambiguous, as far as the nature of their intentions is concerned. Are they simply murderous underlings of a benevolent king? Or are they the opposite? Saviours of an enslaved kingdom? Good king? Evil king? I suppose it depends on the day, but I really prefer to leave the interpretation up to you.

03 March 2005, 11:28 PM (

Two concepts surrounding a king and a jester.

Top one: The jester has just murdered the king (the king is the blob/stick figure prostrated in the foreground) and he (the jester) now sits the throne.

Second one: Similar idea but with a more whimsical twist. The jester sits the throne, looking bored as the queen waits at his side and the king plays at being the minstrel for a change. If I do this one there will probably be more figures involved than what you see here.

03 March 2005, 11:57 PM
I was thinking too, that it might be a cool idea to have the jester threatening the king's favorite pet (say...his dog. "fido") with a dagger, as incentive for the king to cooperate.

--referring to the second concept--

03 March 2005, 12:01 AM
good luck in the challenge.

03 March 2005, 03:14 AM
hey! i really like your idea!!! Simple and very clear for what is a "Master and Servant" means!!! Keep going, btw... i like the second sketch better, which is the king is knocking the jester head... good good :applause:

PS: what do you think if the jester can teach the king to jump and running on a ball like a polar bear? :)

Good luck!!

03 March 2005, 03:22 AM
I think the first concept is much stronger and darker. How often do we hear or read about stories where a jester murders the king and takes rule over the kingdom? It's great how a servant defies his master. Excellent idea!

03 March 2005, 05:24 AM
Thanks man,

That image is a smaller concept for the right hand platform on the larger picture.

Good luck with your image. I like the second concept best.

03 March 2005, 06:53 AM
I really like the king idea. I'm anxious to see where this one is going to go. I'll keep an eye on you!

Oh and I also love your website, and the design and work on there. Impressive!

03 March 2005, 11:04 AM (

Ok, getting a little more ambitious here.... I'm going to make it a band of "servants" (lead by the jester, of course) and together they've basically staged a coup.

The cast:

Jester-holding dagger (with which he's killed the king) seated on the throne.

Minstrel-holding a lute (which encases a hidden blade).

The Oaf-a bit of a half-wit, but he's good with a club.

Dwarf-yet to decide if I'll make him a fantasy style dwarven warrior, or a midget who's tired of being picked on type....

The Mistress-an exotic woman previously enslaved to the king's wanton desires.

A Wizard-holding his trusty staff (wizards are always having to listen to the king's mindless yammering! It's tiresome, really!)

And to spice things up... a monkey, who will be grabbing at the king's crown or something like that.

I'll be adding a few dead soldiers under/around the king as well.

I'm also thinking about adding a dog (the king's most loyal friend and servant) nuzzling the king.

03 March 2005, 10:59 AM (

At this point I'm pretty well set on my concept and I'm ready to start gathering and shooting more specific reference. I'll redraw everything after I have my reference all gathered, refine the composition, add details, and make sure the perspective is correct.

Every figure in this will be in one form of master and servant relationship or another.

The minstrel will be looking at the female figure--the king's mistress--he's in love with her. I'm thinking I'll put a collar and chain on the big oaf dude, and make him subjugated to the female as well, but in a different way.

The wizard, like the Jester is a former court servant to the king.. ...former, as of a few moments ago ;-)

I've yet to fabricate a M+S relationship for the dwarf, but there will be one.... I just need to think about it more. ....any suggestions?

I'm thinking about putting a stained glass window in the wall behind the throne that depicts yet another master and servant relationship. Not sure what though....

I still need to flesh out more of the background elements as well.

So, yeah...tell me what you think.

03 March 2005, 11:35 AM
Concept and interesting sketch, I await duty, good luck more.

03 March 2005, 06:03 PM
Thanks Tranchefeux! :) :bounce:

03 March 2005, 06:05 PM
oy! arse! thats a great sketch!

03 March 2005, 06:16 PM
This is looking like a great concept, the idea of the mutinous court jester is an idea that appeals to me greatly. I really like the ring of spectators, and the way they are doing nothing to help their king. Though I have to confess it took my eye a few seconds to actually see the king, immediately, it was drawn to the dwarf and the dominating figure stood behind the jester. But these could well be issues resolved in colour, so don't mind my ranting if they are.

I just love the body position of the king, he looks to be in much pain, not just physically, but like he's been terribly betrayed. Great work so far!

03 March 2005, 06:46 PM
I think I should probably do something that will indicate that the king is dead. The Jester will be holding a dagger with blood on it and there will be soldiers dead on the steps, keeping their king company.

03 March 2005, 07:59 PM
Wow, I really like the variety of things going on in your composition, and the poses. Thats what catches me the most about this picture. It's so sweet. I can't wait to see your color scheme. I CANT WAIT ANY LONGER!! I DEMAND YOU START COLORING IT NOW !! LOL, Actually you know what would be cool, if you sorta did like a worm's eye view perspective for the entire scene. Here I did a quick sketch of what I mean.

THE Wizard
03 March 2005, 11:26 PM
Yeah, I much agree with coreyartE, change the perspective. It doesent have to be a worm eye one, just put in the front line of the pictue a dead king, make it that first thing that some one will see when he looks at the picture is dead king (long live the king). But on the other hand it's your call.. I like the concept, very much thou!

Thanks to Zepyhri, today I rediscovered pencil. :lightbulb I was inspired by her concept drawings. It's been...probably years since I've actually used a real pencil. The earlier concept drawing here was done with a 0.5 mechanical pencil. Harsh! you can really only get 2 values with those things. They suck! What I didn't realize, stupid me, was that it wasn't me that sucked at drawing with pencil, it was the tool I was using that sucks!

:banghead: Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! :banghead:

For some reason I have this lame tendency to make assumptions like that on a subconscious level and I realize way later than I should that things aren't what they seem.

So I got one of those Staediler mechanical pencils today that has the real pencil lead that you have to sharpen (I got HB) and suddenly I don't suck anymore! It was a miracle! Ok, well...not really, buy yeah...I surprised myself. Don't get me wrong, It's not like I suddenly draw like a genius, but it just flowed 100 times more like I expect the dang pencil to flow.... I'm so happy!!!

I'm going to shoot reference this weekend. Hopefully before I do that I'll have time to do some more concept sketching (with a real pencil) and decide once and for all what the composition's going to be. I'm still not completely satisfied. I feel like I'm close, but... no cigar. Yet.

Thanks again, Zepyhri!

04 April 2005, 03:08 AM
I also like CoreyArtE's perspective better, its definetly more dramatic.
However I also prefer your jester and king idea, the other seems a little chaotic to me, you'll probably be more successful focusing on a couple of characters than a whole mob.

My Servant and Master (

04 April 2005, 10:18 PM (

I did this based on some of your comments, and some of my own ideas. I think it's coming together compositionally now. After I did this drawing I got some friends together to help me shoot some reference. I put them in costume, mixed and matched and pretty well got what I needed, I think. So in the next couple of days I'll be finishing up my lineart.

I know that dwarf looks either too small, or those steps are really high steps. I intend to fix little things like that, and the perspective is a bit warped up toward the top. It's a little too tight. So I'll be moving my vanishing point on the left further to the left.

Thanks for the comments so far. Much appreciated :)

04 April 2005, 10:29 PM
Really nice concept and composition so far. I like where you're going with this! Great depth in the image, too. I think you said earlier that the queen would be standing behing the Jester... Is that still her? Or just some elf? I only ask because she doesn't read as a queen at this moment, 'though I did like the idea of the queen being there. Anyhow, good work so far, look forward to seeing where you take it!

04 April 2005, 10:58 PM
I think you do really nice pencil/sketch work.

Should turn out to be a really nice piece.

04 April 2005, 11:00 PM
hi, I like your sketches and idea...good luck

Actually, I'm not totally set on the female figure. I could make her the queen, a court lady, the king's mistress. Perhaps a queen would be more symbolic and have the most impact. Maybe I'll do some concepts for a queen's crown for her. Something light and wispy, probably....

04 April 2005, 07:54 AM
Looking great man! I'll be watching this! Oh, and I cannot help to think that perhaps there is something odd looking about that dwarf? Not sure what it could be thou..

*EDIT* ah, I noticed that you had written that you was already aware of that yourself! :) Keep it up!

04 April 2005, 02:00 PM
Awesome artowrk, great work

04 April 2005, 02:15 PM
rich and interesting comp, and nice sketch !
I'll follow your thread...

04 April 2005, 03:56 PM
Looks great overall! The biggest thing to bug me was the head of the king. After looking at your notes on the side, I'd say that his head should be resting on the same step as his right (screen left) hand. His body looks a bit stiff right now as a result. This is more of an angle thing than anything else.

Keep going this is looking beautiful =)

04 April 2005, 08:21 PM
Hey, everyone, thanks! I'm goint to try and have the line art finished by tomorrow night, which for me, really means thursday morning (night owl--my friends think I'm a vampire)

I agree on the king's head. I've got photo reference now that should help me solve some of those problems. I think I might add an inch or something to the bottom of the comp so you can at least see one of the steps below the king. Right now it's feeling uncomfortably cropped to me.

Lotta work to do....

04 April 2005, 08:34 PM
Hi there, thanks for checking out my stuff
and your advise, it really helped
I think you've got great idea, would like to see some color
I'll be back

04 April 2005, 03:59 PM
OK, the more I look around the challenge the more I realize how many incredible artists there are out there. Your drawing style is very good, the feeling of form and weight in the poses comes through and shows a masterful understanding of anatomy in perspective, —tough to do. Can't wait to see some paint! Good luck.

My M/S thread:

The King is dead - LONG LIVE THE KING!
NOW THIS IS LOOKING FANTASTIC! I'm so into the fantasy realms, and kings, jesters, dwarves, mages... I have to see more of this, more, moreeee!!
What!? Okay rabbits, who stole my wand?! A?! A?!....

04 April 2005, 08:14 PM (

Ok. It's been a busy week, but I finally managed to get the line art done for this. All done in pencil on 100% rag translucent marker paper. I use 2.0mm mechanical pencils (2H and an HB) and I keep them sharp. Most of the drawing is done with the 2H. I try to hold off as long as possible and use the HB to punch the contrast where I need it. I shot reference for most of the figures about a week ago. The most useful was the ref I got for the king. I think he's looking a lot more natural now.

Anyway, I'm going to start on the coloring today. See how far I can get. I'll probably post another update later today or tomorrow.

04 April 2005, 08:26 PM
excellent lineart art man.

04 April 2005, 08:51 PM
Thats quite nice,in fact excellent!:applause:

04 April 2005, 09:10 PM
NOOB!, Ghostent: Thanks!

Ok, time to paint.

04 April 2005, 06:31 AM (

At this point I'm just working out the composition in lights and darks. This is where the jester starts to pop some....

I'm staying pretty loose at this stage. Very little zooming in, and just glazing in the values with a large semi-soft edged air brush at around 20 or 40 % flow. And opacity and flow mapped to pen pressure. I do this in a multiply layer so I don't lose too much detail from the drawing.

04 April 2005, 07:47 AM
pretty cool drawing, love those walls they are perfect,
just notice on the jester right hand by the wrist it just seems the line is to straight

04 April 2005, 10:32 AM
That is SUPERB.
The idea is marvelous, the perspective makes thins even more interesting. You have a wonderful sketching style, very original and recognizable. I'm soooo gonna follow this one, totally love it :D

EDIT: Oh I dunno if it will be any useful but a suggestion: Maybe make the people around jester look at the dead king with some kind of mean smile at their faces? Like looking with disdain (I hope I got the word right) or something? :D

04 April 2005, 10:53 AM
WoW, very good draw, i like your characters and her position, good work i wait the suite of the coloring

04 April 2005, 10:55 AM
colours are coming along nicely!

04 April 2005, 10:57 AM
love the comp man ! great sense of the scene^^

anyway for the tones I would make more red , yellow tone sin the comp with some adds of blues tones... anyway I have entire confidence in what you'll come up with :p

can't wait man .

oups *anyway I must work on mine I am so late..

04 April 2005, 11:28 AM
whoa. love the storytelling in this. very nice

04 April 2005, 07:26 AM (

Still not going into any detail yet. I pushed the shadows more and right now I'm just working at deciding on color.

I basically do this by glazing transparent color over the drawing. For the most part, I use two types of layers here: multiply and color. Usually I hit the color layer first, then if the values are still too bright I go into the multiply layer with the same color and go over the same area again. This makes the colors rich and they mix that way a lot more like real paint works in my opinion.

Next I'll save a new file, flatten most of it and scale it up so I can start working on details...texture, modelling/shading, etc.

Still a lot of work to do....

04 April 2005, 05:30 PM
Wow.... R Frederickson, my buddy...

Your composition is a high level one! It is great! About your drawing line, i could say its one of the most beatyfull and atractive of the challenge!! Your thread is definetly Top stuff !! I just added your post to my favorites folder!! heheheheh...

See U!!

04 April 2005, 05:37 PM
great concept dude, and excellent drawing!!

04 April 2005, 06:10 PM
Wow, this has really come on since I last looked. The lighting is amazing, and tells the story well by leading the eye from the central jester character to those standing around toasting with him, and then down to the shadowy character of the king. Masterfully done. I love the weight you've given the king's body, his hands, and the way his head is resting on the stone.

The only thing that looked out of place is the queenly figure. I couldn't quite decide what her place is, or how she feels. She looks kind of stiff and distant, almost like she's not part of the celebrations, but not that much that you would associate her with being sympathetic with the king either.

A small matter though, when you consider the picture as a whole. I love it. Can't wait to see it progress some more.

04 April 2005, 09:06 PM
Mobra, arkinet: Thanks! I apperciate the complements!

Zepyhri: You're right about the queen. I'll make sure to mess around with her pose, etc, and try to make her read more like she belongs with this treacherous lot.

I'm not sure about the jester's colors.... To me it doesn't seem quite right yet. Any suggestions?

04 April 2005, 09:31 PM
Sweet hues so far dude! I have to concur with BlacKeri about having some additional expressions on the characters other than the jester, it seems like they're just a bit emotionally removed from the overall feel of the piece...might make it stronger to give them all a little more of a story on their faces if you know what I mean.

I love it anywaaaaay cool!

Cheers! :D

Good luck.

my thread:

04 April 2005, 09:58 PM
Cameron G: You're right. Expressions. I'll be taking a closer look at expressions when I come to each character as I detail them respectively.

Ugh... I'm kind of off to a slow start today. I have a 4 hour class tonight I have to go to, and I meant to get the walls done today, but it's not looking like it's going to happen. We'll see what I can do in the next hour and a half.

04 April 2005, 11:42 PM
I rather liked the colours you'd picked for the jester. Because they aren't as muted or a coordinated as the rest, it really picks him out as a central character, they bounce off the red drapes very well, and for some reason that combination of purple and orange comes across as sinister. Kind of like when you get poisonous creatures that are vividly marked in comparison to their surroundings, it marks him as the killer instantly, even if he wasn't the centre of the toast.

04 April 2005, 02:01 AM
This is great. Lots of character and you can tell there's a real backstory here. Colour, lighting and mood are all cool. This will shape up real nice in the tightening up phase for sure.
Maybe some blood trunning down the steps below the king???
Nice work, I'll be checking out how it goes from here.

04 April 2005, 05:53 PM
The joker rules! I love the idea, and the colouring looks fone so far. Keep up the good work :)

04 April 2005, 06:03 PM
wow.. your compositions is excellent, and colours really work well together... i am impressed.

however i do have one crit: STOP BEING BETTER THAN ME AND GIVE ME A CHANCE!

04 April 2005, 08:47 PM
Good twist for the jester! The colors are starting to look great and I look forward to the added detail.

04 April 2005, 01:35 AM
Wow! This is looking great! I think you are off to a solid start. I will keep watching.

04 April 2005, 05:39 AM (

I decided to make some changes to the drawing. The dwarf is different... I put some more attitude in the jester's face, and more movement in the queen's pose. I also fixed some perspective problems that were bothering me. Overall I'm much more pleased with the drawing now.

I started painting the background...working my way forward.... I've never spent so much time painting walls before. I'm thinking about putting ... something behind the queen. That wall's looking a little bare. Needs something, I'm just not sure what yet.

I'd already figured out basic color and value earlier, so I'm skipping those steps this time for the most part, using the earlier stage as reference....I just put the drawing under a midtone brownish color and started painting.

04 April 2005, 05:46 AM
aww hey that's a really great angle, great art, poor king - those damn jesters!

04 April 2005, 07:20 AM
way up there mate ... cant stop looking at it. great work will await updates.

04 April 2005, 07:30 AM
This is coming along nicely Ryan, great composition and theme.

Will keep on looking at it.

I love the concept!!

Looking really good so far..

I think the Dwarf should have a beer mug,, but that is just me

04 April 2005, 09:16 AM
WOW... just WOW...

So original!!! I love it when I come across a piece like this... NO CRITS AT ALL!!! Can't wait to see the rendered expression on the Jester's face lol!

Love the troll behind the throne concept... but it would be just as strong without if it begins to impose on the overall concept!!.. It just so reminds me of Batman/Joker specials... the relentless brutality of the Joker is so evidnet here!

Keep it up... will be back soon!!:D

04 April 2005, 09:49 AM
BLOODY intelligent approach! Love the perspective, love the idea, love the emotions, ...what else is there to love about this image?! Seriously: you've just made a classic into an inverted classic!

Nice going, just don't ya stop!

04 April 2005, 08:04 PM
Hi, very good projection on the bottom, you does not laugh I will supervise, go, go

04 April 2005, 05:25 AM
Hey everyone, thanks for your comments :)

Slav, thierry2005 - I'm glad there are some people out there who can't stop looking at my work. I on the other hand can sometimes get sick of looking at something I've spent this much time on. I would have had another update today, but the power went out on me when I was halfway through painting the wizard and I lost about an hours worth of work. So I decided I wasn't going to paint anymore today. ...Needed a bit of a break from it anyway.

JimmiMak, Adamos - High praise! Much appreciated. Thanks!!

04 April 2005, 05:35 AM
Oh yeah...

Agent_Ornage - I actually put a beer mug in his hand once when I was sketching. Then I wondered...what kind of dwarf carries around a beermug everywhere he goes? I know they love beer...but hmmm... it would be a nice touch, but I wonder if it would stand out awkwardly...?

04 April 2005, 05:36 AM
oh wow! that's really nice!!!
and i love the idea of it!

the joker's revenge hehehehehe!
very nice, it'll be great to see it finished!

04 April 2005, 05:45 AM
Great entry, nice emotions here. Kind of thing where I can't think of anything to add except it's very interesting. Maybe the characters will look smug? Wonder what you will do...are they all insane? Greedy?

04 April 2005, 03:16 AM
You can try it out and see if it works.. If not then no biggy.

But,,, Every Axe totting Dwarf I know also carries his own Beer Mug:D

04 April 2005, 05:00 AM
oh WOW.
Okay, so the sketch was awesome. And maybe I shouldn't get so excited, because it is only a background but WHAT a background. The window with the stained glass and the light falling on the rocky "frame" of the window (sorry, no vocabulary ;p) is just making me weep. Awesome stuff, no crits so far!

Btw, great change in expressions :)

04 April 2005, 05:09 AM
That's looking really nice! I love the changes you've made with the Queen: Now she really fits into the scene and has some emotional impact! By comparison, the other three characters - the Dwarf, the minstrel, and the Mage - are looking kind of vacant, but if they get revised like the queen does, they'll add a lot!

The window and the whole wall up there is loking fantastic. Can't wait to see your further progress. Good luck!

04 April 2005, 06:18 AM
Naomi - Hey thanks! :) And, yep, that's me. I am the person you're thinking of.

userBrian - insane, greedy, etc... i like to leave that sort of interpretation up to the What you said....

Agent_Orange - what axe totting dwarves do you know? We might have some friends in common. :) Hehehe

BlacKeri - Hehe, don't weep too much... not just yet anyway... like you said, it's just the background. But it's good to know you appreciate all the work (it was a LOT of work) I put into it.

walrus - Glad you like the queen better! I appreciate the crits on the dwarf, minstrel and mage. By vacant, do you mean their facial expressions? I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping their poses the same, but I'll definitely be tweaking the faces. It's probably kind of hard to tell, but right now I have the dwarf looking down at the king in disgust. The minstrel will probably be doing the same or he'll be grinning conspiratorially at either the jester or the queen.

Again, thanks all for the support and comments.

RF :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 03:05 PM
whoa, thats very profesionally done... good work :)

04 April 2005, 03:23 PM
oh yes, those tweaks to the dwarf and the queen in particular have really made a big difference, there's almost a sexual spark between the jester and the queen now too, in the way she's languidly leaning on the throne. And wow on that time spent on the background... was definitely worth it. No crits this time round, just lots of admiration! I'll be wanting a print of this by the time it's finished, I think it's looking amazing.

04 April 2005, 05:13 PM
Double post sowwie.... I guess I'll just tell you again how amazing this is then !

04 April 2005, 05:14 PM
Ah you started coloring it! Man I have such a good feeling about this picture man! I know its going to be good since I know what your capable of doing from your website! I can stand the wait any longer, hurry up and give us another update! The people demand it !

04 April 2005, 05:16 PM
WOW!! the starting paint is amazing ! I knew it would turn out very well!
you have talent man :)

can't wait to see more :)

04 April 2005, 08:55 PM (

Just some details to let you all know I'm still working on this. I'm pretty happy with the wizard, so I thought I'd give you a little peek. The queen needs a necklace of some kind, but other than that, she's pretty well done. The close-up on the queen's hair is at 75% of full size. The gold on the dragon head (the throne) isn't finalized yet. I plan to make it more interesting, but I'll come back to it after I've made more progress in other areas. When I have time I'll put a design, similar to what I've done on the archway, on the wall behind the queen as well.

Thanks to everyone for your comments!

...back to work....

04 April 2005, 09:05 PM
omg! :scream:

How've you been?

Naomi - I'm good, but to me the world has the size of a jelly bean, not a peanut. Unless if the peanut is covered in chocolate. Then it could be a peanut. ;) :scream:

Nigel Q , Kornél - Thanks, guys! And speaking of colorful (Kornél) color saturation like this is sort of a new thing for me. So hopefully I'm not overdoing it.

ms@zx - Thanks, glad you like it! Who's princess fiona? You lost me there... :)

I have to do some paying work today, so it'll be a bit of a break from painting. I expect to make a bunch more progress this weekend....

04 April 2005, 11:05 PM
looks great dude, take your time, i know this will turn out to be one of the best:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 09:51 AM
Great detail! I like the lighting especially on the queen's hands, great pose. It's looking really good.

04 April 2005, 11:24 AM
lol~princess fiona from 'Shrek' a 3d animated feature film from dreamworks studio..
though it reminds me of her but urs still have the originality of it~

04 April 2005, 09:03 PM
Great great stuff! :) Please post more updates as you keep painting!

04 April 2005, 11:59 PM
Amazing concept and colors. I anxios to see more. :bounce:

04 April 2005, 01:30 AM
Oh, dude, super sweet!! Ask and you shall the expressions on all the characters. M, M, M, My Feona! I love this work. Your painting style works very well for this piece. The slain king feels very weighted and quite dead. Great work!

Here's a detail of the dwarf. I've started painting on the minstrel, but he's giving me fits. I'll figure him out though. I've still got the king and the jester to paint. Just pluggin' away at it here and there.

05 May 2005, 03:26 PM
Really cool. Your work is one of my favorits :bounce:

05 May 2005, 04:00 PM
It's a impresive style and a great paint, .Your painting is very fine, and the render beautiful, really a nice work

05 May 2005, 04:09 PM
awesome details and nice colors! :scream:

05 May 2005, 09:28 AM (

Getting close. I was going to save the jester for last, but I just couldn't resist.

05 May 2005, 09:38 AM
YOP YOP..Hey Man what's up:) .. I did not come to see your work since your Sketch.. I'm so sorry and so impress of your colors and effects!! WWAAAOOOOOO§:wise: .Just a little thing..Will you leave the character in foreground so blurry ?? I mean it would be better that he looks more's just a personnal opinion...

It's a very good job man!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Good luck!

05 May 2005, 09:41 AM
its shrek! i kid. for such a diabolical scene, you sure managed to blend a warm color scheme well. clean and easy to read... except for the king in the foreground. but youre nto done yet so who cares. this is gonna look cool.

05 May 2005, 09:53 AM
Thanks :) I've hardly even touched the king yet. I still have to spend a few hours on him before he'll be even close to being finished. I think I need to give the queen a different color dress. The princess fiona similarities are a total coincidence. I was totally shocked when it was first pointed out to me.

05 May 2005, 10:45 AM
Very very good! I especially like the new master look, the only one I think that could make this, the jester. Also the techniqe really strenghten the whole concept, so  for u!

05 May 2005, 03:26 PM
Wonderful!! Really good paint. :applause:

05 May 2005, 05:33 PM
it looks great now..~!great job overall:)

05 May 2005, 05:44 PM
Wow, this is a fine work, you can feel proud of this one. I especially like the expressions, they create such a feeling of a background story going on...makes me want to read the book. Great work! Good luck in the voting, you've got one from me...

Great Job

One more king on wellfare.

Great job

05 May 2005, 10:00 PM (

I decided that I wanted to eliminate the princess Fiona problem so I changed her dress color entirely...which meant I had to change some colors in the clothing of some of the other characters here as well.

05 May 2005, 05:52 AM (

He's not quite done but I thought I'd give you a bit of a closer look.

I'm putting the dagger in his hand dripping with blood rather than having it stuck in the king's back. And there will be blood dripping from the steps below the king.

Right now I'm putting an instrument in the minstrel's hand. He's nearly done. After that it'll just be the king left to do and a few touch-ups here and there.

05 May 2005, 08:31 AM
Hi there. I checked your image out a few days ago, and have kept watch. I LOVE your use of color here. It's rich and saturated without overpowering, and just your choices of colors here with the jester manage to convey that utterly creepy clownish coloration. Will his face be any lighter? For some reason I keep thinking his skin beneath the makeup is toadbelly white.

Don't mind me, just thinking aloud on a really really late tired night. Very well done.
All the best luck with the Challenge,

05 May 2005, 09:07 AM
Wow! How have I not seen this one before...I love your style, very cool and it sort of reminds me of a rather cartoony version of a medieval scene. Cartoony really works with this scene though.

Leave the guy in the foreground slightly out of focus, but you should introduce some more contrast into him so you can be sure he's in the foreground...

I love the clothes of the dwarf and the lighting in the upper turned out beautifully. I'm just curious as to whether it would look better flipped?? The reason being that right now you look from the people to the dead king, which makes you think...why are they so happy..oh, they killed him... However, if it was flipped, you'd be looking at the dead king first...what happened to him...they killed him and they did it in cold blood...
Just my 2c though! You're the :arteest: .

05 May 2005, 09:45 AM
Looking great, Mr Frederickson! I have to say I prefered the colours in the earlier version, especially the jester, but I do understand why you've changed them. The scene is really coming together now, I really love the minstrel and the sorcerer, the lighting on them is wonderfully done. Will you be keeping the king a little out of focus? Or will he be done to the same level of detail, just darker? Either way, this is a lovely piece, best of luck!

05 May 2005, 11:34 AM
hi ryan!

i somehow have missed this completely! fine characters and brilliant use of lights and colors! it looks really like a fairytale!

05 May 2005, 12:35 AM
Lookin Spectacular:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 12:51 AM (

I still need to do quite a bit o' painting on the king. A few more tweaks on the throne and the jester's hands and the minstrel's hand isn't finished...and the texturing on the steps in the foreground.....but the image is nearly there.

I better get back to painting. Only 39 hours left.

05 May 2005, 02:57 PM
REally good updates.

I´m anxious for the final version :bounce:

05 May 2005, 03:47 PM

Finally tis is a great fearytale pic! Excellent colors and mood...!

but congrats for the final pic!

cheers: Kornél

Hey great work! These characters are really well done with great lighting. tickled my funny bone.... hope you get this in on time.

05 May 2005, 06:05 AM (

Thanks to all who watched this thread! and good luck!

i think your composition is wonderful, skin tone, texture fabrics, lighting are excellent .i also liked the change of expression on the queen's face . however your metal goblets look like skin and the reflection is poor compared to the quality of the other areas of reflection

05 May 2005, 05:27 AM
congratulations on your great final piece! le roi est mort vive le roi! :p hahaha, original piece, definately and masterly painted! keep on rocking and best of luck on the finals!
