A quick rendering of the inside of a circus tent

03 March 2005, 12:15 AM
Second entry attempt. Ran into huge time crunch with the GSO. Hope to have some ideas here by the end of the week!

03 March 2005, 04:32 PM
Started throwing out ideas would like feedback on direction, as I have tons of ideas but have trouble narrowing the view so to speak.

a) Little gremlin like creature torqueing on a motor under the hood of a car, looking back at the mechanic with a "am I doing good" sorta look. Mechanic is big hairy man...

b) Play with the relationship between performer and audience. At times the fans are master to ther performer and vica versa.

c) General and troops in battle, probably in a retro-futuristic sorta style. Kind of like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow".

d) Same as C but the view is of two generals playing chess or risk with soldiers as game pieces.

e) Evil, Cold ultra - biotch, looking snidely down on a withered little old man.

f) The uber-coach potato lounging in front of his master (The TV)

So which direction should I go? Or should I come up with more?

03 March 2005, 04:37 PM
d) Same as C but the view is of two generals playing chess or risk with soldiers as game pieces. This is the songer Idea I think. No one is doing this idea as of yet. The other ideas are being dome in some form or fashion already. Well gremlin idea isn't but I like the chess idea a lot more.

03 March 2005, 04:50 PM
I think it is the stronger idea, and allows for a little more character development.

03 March 2005, 05:55 PM
Yeah, that one has potential. But would be cool if the board had a holographic projection of the battle to better show that these generals are coldly playing with the lives of many.

03 March 2005, 06:44 PM
I love the holographic idea with the battle raging in the background. Somehow obvious that the two are tied together.

03 March 2005, 07:01 PM
Definetly "d". Powerful stuff :) The holographic thing may be a little too much, I personally would go for a classic chessboard and try to link the pieces to the background action in a more subtle way. It all dependes how you pull it of. I just think there are already too many entries with a futuristic approach.

03 March 2005, 01:01 AM
It looks like I will be doing the chess match but in the 3d only... Connecting the chess pieces to the battle is the trick, and I agree too much futuristic stuff,, I want it to look more like a ww2 documentary than a sci-fi movie...

However THIS thread will be regarding my idea for portaying the relationship between a performer and his/her audience. We all assume the perfomrer is the one in control, that is the obvious relationship. I want to show more of the inverse. Have been thinking that on stage might not be the best place for that. The poparazzi harrassing a star could be a quite interesting image. Maybe the star is exiting the stage with the cameras flashing, fans screaming and body guards clearing a path. I need some help with this one. Very vague at the moment.

03 March 2005, 05:05 PM
F) go! F)!
it would be really cool to see this idea finished!

03 March 2005, 05:11 PM
Yeah f could be alot of fun... I guess it is time to do some sketches and see which ones feel right...

03 March 2005, 04:43 PM
Alright after much consideration and evaluation of my current time constraints I have decided to solely focus on this 2d challenge. If time permits I might try and do something for the 3d but at this time that is not my priority. Being that is the case I will be doing the chess match for the 2d challenge.

03 March 2005, 04:57 PM
cool sketch , welcome to the contest!

03 March 2005, 04:58 PM
love the general! I like your whimsical approach to him. Looking forward to seeing more!

Good luck in the challenge!

03 March 2005, 05:00 PM
Nice looking concept, welcome!

03 March 2005, 05:01 PM
I am thinking even though conceptually it is a pretty dark image, it would be fun to potray it in a charicature like fashion. Makes it look even more absurd.

03 March 2005, 05:02 PM
Just gotta say, I love militarism : D

03 March 2005, 04:07 PM
Will be posting a few more sketches this evening when I get home from work. I think I have refined the idea a bit. Should be starting overall comp soon.

03 March 2005, 06:40 PM
Hey, looking good, that's a pretty detailed concept sketch! He looks like a good character to be working with, it'll be good to see how you work with him. Good luck!

03 March 2005, 06:41 PM
Nice sketch so far! I like the way the eyes are subtlely different sized, it gives him a lot of personality and makes him much more human. Would his upper brow be receiving mroe shadow from the hat? And have you figured out yet how he's going to work in a larger layout? Best of luck with it!

03 March 2005, 06:52 PM
I like the way ths idea is heading. Is the general figure supposed to be godlike in the picture, playing with actual men on a risk board, or will he be more human with the pieces on the board representational of a battle elsewhere? Either would be a good way to go, maybe make the figures on the board seemingly made of plastic with the odd flesh bit poking out, really bring home the whole servant thing...? But the exaggerated general is looking pretty good.

And for the 2D thread... hmmn, maybe you could play on the fact that the performer becomes a slave to his own public perception? Being dragged about by managers and PAs, being told how to stand, how to dress, that kind of thing, perhaps build it in with metaphor.

03 March 2005, 06:53 PM
The original idea makes for a very complex, detailed and destracting composition so I have tried playing with it a bit. I kind of fell in love with an image of a little general (The one I submitted) screaming at a giant heep of a soldier, who is bashfully attempting to do his duty. All of this is happening on a giant chess board. Probably only show one side, and fairly close up on this interaction.

The sketch is just a concept drawing of the character. Now I've got to draw him from a primarily profile view while screaming... Should be fun...

NIce illustration, dude. The general is very cool. Can't wait to see you illustration as it progresses.

I will be working late tonight to try and get some ideas down... Struggling with the overall composition, I can see flashes of a scene in my head, but not the "shot"...

Always loved this style of art the realistic/caricature, and using it as a style to reflect the absurdity of war is a good idea as well. Putting the action on a chess board is nice touch, the strategy/soldiers as pawn aspect of war.

Can't wait to see your pic, and what kind of angle you take on this concept.

03 March 2005, 07:33 AM
Sounds like an interesting idea... and i really like his weasel-y expression.

It was probably a good plan to focus on one challenge, i was amazed how much time the 'machineflesh' challenge took up. Good luck getting this done!

03 March 2005, 04:19 PM
I spent all of last night being very frustrated, some times I can sit down and pump out decent stuff and others I spend hours nad nothing worth a poop comes out. Did start playing around with the basic layout and think I have something to work with, I'll post it during my lunch.

04 April 2005, 11:21 PM
lol, just came to watch your progress, waiting for that update! keep it coming mate :)

04 April 2005, 11:34 PM
Nice drawing. I like the sky Captian idea, however I think I would push the design of the uniform towards a stylization of originals uniforms. It's just odd seeing a WWII German peak cap on someone with a post vietnam era US class A's with jump wings. Can't wait to see some sketches for the final.

04 April 2005, 11:17 PM (

Quick sketch of the pose etc for the soldiers/pawns...

04 April 2005, 11:31 PM
Thanks everyone for the comments, I really appreciate it... I am going to put up a really quick sketch of the layout I think I am going to use...

I am playing around with camera angles at the moment, moving around the scene in my mind. I think I'll have the view sorta over the shoulder of one of the players... I really like the idea of the chess pieces as plastic with little bits of flesh to show the relationship to the battle in the background... However I am thinking it might be more fun to put the soldiers directly on the board and show some sort of interaction with the environment of the board and each other...

04 April 2005, 12:22 AM (

This is a really rough sketch trying to nail down a layout.

I like the skewed aspect of this layout but am not at all pleased with the pose of either general... I think they are boring me... Maybe one of them yelling, or something?

04 April 2005, 12:29 AM (

Quick sketch of the general yelling. I am thinking maybe he should be looking directly into the eyes of the other general and pounding his fist on the table?

04 April 2005, 12:46 AM
The near general will be picking up one of the soldiers to move them on the board... Soldier will be holding onlto his helmet trying not to be dropped... Far general will be pounding his fist on the table, making the pieces bounce a bit, topple a few etc.

04 April 2005, 12:50 AM
I've been going back and forth on this for a while now. Not sure if I want to go with a bombed out shell of a city, maybe a bombed out cathedral, or a super extravagant palace as the background... I've been leaning towards the bombed out cathedral as it would be fun to draw, but I don't think it conveys the same impact as the general playing with life and death from the comfort of a palace... Any thoughts or suggestions?

04 April 2005, 01:18 AM
Gonna be posting up some sketches tonight... I have changed quite a bit about my concept. Going in a much more whimsical direction than originally intended. Stay tuned!

04 April 2005, 03:54 AM (

i've decided to move the whole scene to a circus... Clowns in fatigues, politicians/generals as the ringmasters. Laughing crowd...

04 April 2005, 03:56 AM (

Quick sketch of the clowns in fatigues, and helmets...

A quick rendering of the inside of a circus tent

04 April 2005, 04:33 AM
Ringmast as obvious master, all the others are the servants... basically I am taking the general, and soldiers and moving them from the chess board to a circus. The elephants will be like trojan horses, full of soldiers/clowns almost bursting at the seems. My next post will be lineart for the composition I hope, no more time to screw around!

pitty you never finnished this, your characters looked so promissing! well, 5d ... thanks again for your support in my thread and hope to see you soon my friend !
