Andreas Rocha has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: Final Image resumbitted - "Patrone e Servi" (

Looking at the colors in my previous "Final Image" submission I realized the colors were somewhat wrong, so I tweaked them in Photoshop. I was lucky to be able to upload my final image again.

03 March 2005, 10:31 PM
Hi andreas,

back again......good luck to you.

03 March 2005, 10:34 PM
Hey Andy, nice to meet you. I guess we don´t know each other... yet.
I wish you the best.

03 March 2005, 11:45 PM
Andi! Ah, good to see you back again! I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with this time 'round. Good luck and have fun!

03 March 2005, 10:31 AM
Hi Andi!

Good to know you're entering again! I'm hoping to find the time to enter myself. let'see if I can manage it!

Cheers and good luck!

03 March 2005, 10:40 AM
Good luck Andreas :)

03 March 2005, 11:29 AM
hi andreas i'm happy to see your participation at this new challenge, good luck:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 07:24 PM
its great seeing u here.will be anxiously anticipating for urs..good luck mate!

03 March 2005, 04:03 PM (

Well, these are my first doodles. I had some ideas, but they all seemed so weak, I just started to put them down on paper, to see if something else comes up.
I am really amazed at the quality of work displayed in this first week. It's mindblowing...Congratulations to all! Some really cool artwork will come out of this Challenge for sure.

Let's go, then...

03 March 2005, 05:08 PM
Hi andreas,

I very much like the scribble at the bottom - the arrangement of the figures looks promising.

03 March 2005, 05:21 PM (

Some more doodles...don't really have an aim here. Perhaps I'm warming up...

03 March 2005, 08:57 PM (

The previous sketch had a big guy seen from behind...then I thought why not take the classic godfather image as the master and numerous little thugs as the servants. Take the theme with a drop of humour.
At the moment I like the image, but I will probably hate it tomorrow...I'll search for more ideas so I can compare them.

03 March 2005, 09:04 PM
hello Andreas, nice start, I really liked your spaceopera entry and so i'm sure this will be great.BTW nice doodles!!!Good luck and have fun:thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 09:55 PM (

I think this is very unoriginal and I made it more to weigh out different solutions.

03 March 2005, 10:22 PM (

Took one of the thumbnail sketches and developed a bit different idea...more biblical.

03 March 2005, 10:32 PM
I like the recent concept.

03 March 2005, 11:19 PM
Hello Andreas! You're having fun working up your thumbs... looking forward to what you settle on! :D

03 March 2005, 12:01 AM
Olá Andreas Rocha, os teus doodles estão demais, o ultimo update é um bom principio para pintares ninfas!:D...

Great skecthes, and tons of ideas you have, ill keep an eye on this...

boa sorte

03 March 2005, 11:32 AM (

I will refine the last three sketches, to see if any one of them is worth going on. Right now, the one I like the most is the mafia guy, but I'll see what happens.

This one was based on sketch doesn't really tell a story (at least not at the moment). Some sort of relation between a wise master/warrior and muses (like Gonçalo suggested). The ideas are still floating around.

03 March 2005, 11:52 AM
Hahaa found you! great sketches so far Andreas, they all have great potential, but I like the mafia concept the most, it could be really cool! Hehe all those midget gangsters with tommyguns, awesome!

Looking forward to see some updates, see ya

03 March 2005, 01:18 PM (

Hmmm.... I'm still more inclined to do the mob guy.

03 March 2005, 01:33 PM
cool sketches all of them

03 March 2005, 03:25 PM (

Ok...This is definitely the one I like most (it's also the one who got the best treatment). I would like to know which of the three above you think I should turn into a finished piece, or if the image of the mob guy is not strong enough. Perhaps I should go on with my search for the right idea...

Any suggestions would be mostly appreciated. Thanks!

03 March 2005, 03:29 PM
Definitly the mob piece I would say, it's original and it's funny

03 March 2005, 03:56 PM
wooow! your last concept is awsome ! the general atmosphere is funny ,with those little alcapone servants

03 March 2005, 04:29 PM
I would go for the mafia, good idea, original for conceptart. We always design monsters and warriors and sexy women ...
Anyway mafia is a cool concept.

O, and I love your'e sketches.

03 March 2005, 05:45 PM
Heee! I love it. Sorry I don't have any useful feedback like you did for me...

Just looking forward to seeing this one done!

03 March 2005, 05:50 PM
Hey, Andreas! I too really like the MafiaMiniMen the most. It's refreshing and kind of funny. The other ones don't stick out as much, especially the woman with the big beast, which reminds me of 87 other entries I've seen so far. Good luck with it!

03 March 2005, 05:51 PM
yeh that mafia one is different! go with that!

03 March 2005, 05:56 PM
I like your fat warrior but I think the mob pic is better. You've got the characterisation spot on. But what about this idea: Put another couple of mobsters in there, one on each side of the big boss and each about half-way in size between the small guys and the big guy. I see them sort of pointing away left and right at tangents to the big boss, with their guns angled sort of skywards. Damn, I'm crap at explaining these things, but I hope you get my idea.

03 March 2005, 07:52 PM
Mobsters 100%. Like what Baron Imposible suggested, I see the "middle guys" radically thinner than the rest, reinforcing the cartoon style and maybe adding some more symetry. It's refreshing to see something else other than the "sexy women/big bad monster", or the "cute kid/huge nasty creature" themes. :bounce:

03 March 2005, 08:21 PM (

I think that subconsciously I was influenced by two things here...The poster of "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and Quino's (great argentinian cartoonist) representantion of authority and their bodyguards.

Rudeone - Thanks for the support!

Punklover - "Alcaponis"...never thought about that. Thanks...

DeVlaming - Thanks, man! The mafia guy is a bit cliche in that I think its almost a copy of the "Godfather" series. What I think differs, are the "Alcaponis".

Francis001 - Thanks, helps a lot, too.

Walrus - Yo! MafiaMinMen, also known as "Alcaponis"... I hope I can keep the idea refreshing to the end. Thanks!

NOOB! - Thanks.

Baron Impossible - Great suggestion, man. I just I hope I managed to implement it. What do you think?

Gaeas Herald - Mobsters 100% it will be. Thanks. When I saw your suggestion about making them thinner I had already done this next step, and they are a bit fat now. As personal bodyguards, perhaps they should be slim and mean. My only fear of doing them real thin is that perhaps they will break the triangular, composition standing as "sticks" besides the boss. What do you think?

03 March 2005, 08:25 PM
Brilliant, that's exactly what I had in mind :)

03 March 2005, 08:54 PM
very good choice the gangster's pic is the best skretch, good concept i like :thumbsup::thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 08:56 PM
haha they all got mini tomi guns, nice work so far!

03 March 2005, 12:48 AM (

These sketches are more an excuse to practice my drawing skills...I'll probably spend the next week doing some research and taking reference photos of expressions and clothing.
As soon as work starts on Monday, I'll update much less.

03 March 2005, 06:59 PM
Impressive drawing skill man. I really like you're stile. :applause: More! More!

03 March 2005, 07:10 PM
hei there, i like the idea that there are bunch of short guys with the tall one at the back, very humerous:scream: :applause: , straight forward concept, interesting:)

03 March 2005, 08:22 PM
Stick bodyguards, I see. Maybe to compensate you could have the two slim bodyguards on one side, and the guys' mother on the other. She could have an apron and those wooden thingis used for stretching pizza dough (my english vocabulary is limited  ). That way, the symetry won't be broken, and you get to keep the triangular shape of the composition.
Oh, yeah, Quino rules!

03 March 2005, 08:50 PM
Nice sketches, they have good characterisation. As an aside, I just been watching Ghost Dog again, with Henry Silva as the Mafia guy Mr Vargo; he barely says anything, just stares, but every time I see him it just cracks me up - if anyone's got a good face for reference, he has :)

03 March 2005, 10:03 PM
taz23 - Thanks a lot Mihai...specially coming from you. I really admire your skills.

eclipson - thanks...I will try to keep it simple and work a lot on the expressions and poses

GaesHerald - that's funny with the guys mother, but I am afraid the mobster's character would be broken, and the mother would get all the protagonism. Perhaps I'll make a few sketches. Thanks for the suggestion...

BaronImpossible - Never heard of Ghost Dog...but the photo you sent me is great. I already got some Marlon Brando refs...he sure kicks ass.

I'll do some sketching try out some new compositions. Thanks a lot guys for commenting.

03 March 2005, 10:09 PM
man thats looks so great!!,can't imagine how this will turn out

03 March 2005, 11:05 PM (

Decided to test some different layouts. I was a bit tired when I did them, so some things really don't work. I'll do some more layouts tomorrow. Later I'll compare them and pick the best one out.

03 March 2005, 08:55 AM
Wow, working late, I see!

I'm with the majority as well, I like the Alcaponis idea best! It would be kinda cool if they all shared similar traits with the boss, which could suggest either that they're all "family", or that they were cloned from the Big Boss, à la Mad Scientist/pulp stories! As for the layout, I also like the inicial one, contre-plongé of the big boss with a front line of Mini-mes with the antique tommy guns! Good luck with this, and most of all, enjoy what you're doing!

03 March 2005, 12:00 AM (

Had some fun tonight with this completely amateur photo shoot. Took my trustworthy G1, went to the basement, got some props and started "shooting" myself, hehe. Then I organized the best photos out of the 150 and made this quick montage. I'll use this as photoreference and not for copying the photo. The perspective of the central figures is off...but I believe the overall montage will be quite helpful.

03 March 2005, 12:12 AM
hi!Andreas !Firstly Good luck:)
"Different layouts","Exploring ideas","Refining Sketch C ","Refining sketch B "
coool sketchs!looking nice! go on!man

03 March 2005, 12:54 AM
Hehe so cooool! This is gonna be so funny! That photo totally cracked me up

03 March 2005, 08:37 AM
Love it!

Can't wait to see more

03 March 2005, 09:55 AM
BWAHHAAHAHAA!!! That montage is TOO FUNNY! Brilliant! Where did you get... the hat?!?
Good work!

03 March 2005, 10:07 AM
The gangster theme fit so well to the contest :)

That bring also a very cool 30's style. That let's hope an awesome final piece.

Your photo shoot is soooooo cool :) Don't know how you will use it, but as it is at this step, it's awesome !!!

03 March 2005, 10:13 AM
Very cool & original concept! Will be watching this one.

03 March 2005, 10:25 AM
very nice and fresh!gotta see more of this mate..!

03 March 2005, 05:43 PM
Oh, that's just great, Andreas! The photoshoot shot is wonderful! And you've inspired me to post the even-more-amateur-looking results of my own photoshoot. Good luck with the painting...

03 March 2005, 06:05 PM
hahah great photoshoot,looks perfect.

03 March 2005, 07:49 PM
Hi! I noticed this thread pretty late, but its awesome! Especially that photo manipulation :D hahahaha..and all the sketches before now that I see them. I'll follow ur process with great pleasure.

03 March 2005, 07:18 PM
Love the mobsters idea, the concept sketches are coming out great (that photo was funny too). If your GSO entry was any indication, this will be awesome.

03 March 2005, 07:42 PM
very intelligent sketches Andy!

like the way you play with your concept!

good luck to you friend!

03 March 2005, 09:57 PM (

Took some more photos and corrected the central figures.

03 March 2005, 10:08 PM
You shot yourself 150 times and you are still alive? Cool.

Strong concept, good idea with the collage.
I really liked the thumbnail sketches with the shorter guy in the middle.
Is that still an option?

03 March 2005, 10:10 PM (

Started to sketch the figures...(never drew so many figures in one image'll sure be a pain in the ass...but it'll be fun!). The faces aren't really detailed, yet, but the overall proportions are what I have in mind. Later I will probably expand the canvas to give more room to the city in the background.

Thanks for the encouragment and comments!

03 March 2005, 01:01 AM
Good work, man!!

Your drawings are more expressive than the pictures...hehehe

Don't leave this road.

03 March 2005, 03:41 AM
this is great.. i dont think anyones covered the mob side of things in this comp :p

nice compsition, nice hard edges style.. reminds me of spy vs spy for some reason.

03 March 2005, 05:22 AM
Great concept, this one is going to be really nice.

03 March 2005, 06:01 AM
Concept's still going great. I suggest you narrow the Boss's shoulders just a tad, they look awkward even for a comic (not too much though, retain the big look :D)

03 March 2005, 12:04 PM
Your idea is brilliant, I regret by having had it,
good luck for the continuation.

03 March 2005, 11:15 PM
You can have a great time with those characters and their expressions Andreas. What are you thinking of for a background? Maybe a big mobster car?

03 March 2005, 11:22 PM
cool idea! i like your sketching-style.. and the photos are great too.. i´ll watch this one!

03 March 2005, 11:41 PM
Loved the photoshoot! The linearet is good too. Those little mobsters look really funny, but I personally would make them chubbier, kinda caught in between nasty and cute.

agent bone
03 March 2005, 11:45 PM
Great idea!! I really like the triangular composition. Really gives solidity to the main figure. Also the rough painting looks great. Keep going!

04 April 2005, 11:37 AM
Oi, Andi!
Hey, it's just 9 guys, stop complaining! :) One day you'll be like Geoff Darrow! I liked the previous boss better with the trouser's <port> suspensórios </port> and white shirt, but a "godfather" suit would be fine as well.
I think the bodyguards with the shotguns are a little too indiscrete. The guns can be a sign of hierarchy (i.e., tools to do the dirty jobs): The little guys - all out with the tommy guns, the body guards - could be reaching inside their jackets for hidden pistols, the Boss - no gun at all!

04 April 2005, 10:01 PM
cool progress, keep it up

04 April 2005, 02:26 PM (

This is as far I will go with my lineart. I usually never take much care with lineart, and most of the times I regret it later, with lots of corrections. This time, I took more time with it, and I'm curious if it will speed up the process. It looks quite uninteresting, and I am eager to jump to the value stage.
I also downloaded a 3dmodel of a tommygun and used it to place several copies over the image as reference.

I'm a bit afraid that I am losing the spontaneity of the initial sketches, but I hope to regain that now.

04 April 2005, 02:29 PM
whoa that looks great!

04 April 2005, 04:11 PM (

Finally I got to the coloring phase. Like most of you out there (I think), this is the most enjoying phase. It seems to be paying off, investing all the time in references (photoshoot, 3d, Google). Also, having the lineart on top, allows me to make general adjustments to color quite rapidly. I somehow feel influenced by Drew Struzan's movie posters, but I can't quite explain where. I also left the 3d tommyguns on a half-transparent layer. I think the right bodyguard is too far behind the boss, and I will move him to the right later, when I don't need the linart anymore. He also looks like a postman, right now.
I forgot to thank everybody for their comments.

LotaH - Thanks! I will try to maintain the painting expressive.

eupee - that I think about it...maybe you're right. About the hardedges, I will try to keep them in the painting...leave that sketchy edge.

arlutik - thanks...I hope so.

sidchagan - I narrowed the boss' shoulders...I hope the concept is still doing well...

Tranchefeux - It's an honour to hear that from you. Thank-you!

Poshspice - I hope the expressions are working out. I thought about a mobster car in the beginning, but I don't know if it would be readable in the background. Perhaps I will try it later on.

dunkelgold - Thanks. I also have an eye on your entry.

GaeasHerald - Thanks for the chubby suggestion, but I think I will try to keep them just naughty.

agentbone - Thanks. I hope to have retained those characteristics in the most recent painting.

DrFx - Grande amigo! Your suggestions are always great! Even if I don't implement them. I dropped the tie like you suggested (I think). I tried the suggestion of the "reaching-for-the-gun-inside" suggestion, but I think they looked too discrete. Also, the shotguns or rifles they are holding should also be a sign of hierarchy. Hoping to hear more of your suggestions.

the1st_angel - Thanks.

04 April 2005, 07:08 PM
It's looking really nice.

04 April 2005, 07:29 PM
This is definetly the most enjoyable fase for the artist, and with a coloring wip like that, there's no doubt that it will be just as enjoyable to us. The previous research has reaally paid off!

04 April 2005, 07:34 PM
It's looking wonderful. I love how the big guy is holding onto his minion's hat.

04 April 2005, 08:34 PM
Yep, concept's still going great, and the coloring's awesome so far, good mood to it! The boss looks perfect now too.
Cant wait to see the background, looks liek you've got some good stuff planned

04 April 2005, 09:38 PM (

I started detailing the boss first. Working from reference really speeds up the process. Sometimes if feels like I'm cheating. From now on I will post the images up to 1200px wide so you can see most of the details and criticize better.

Arlutik - Thanks.

GaeasHerald - Thanks. This phase is really enjoyable.

Baron Impossible - Thanks, Simon. The idea first was to make the boss hold a walking "stick" but then a colleague suggested that he be holding on of the "AlCaponi's" head. I'm not happy with the shading and form of the hand but I'll get there.

Sidchagan - Thanks...I'm aiming for rainy day colors. As a result I will keep the background kind of blurred with little detail. However, I want to detail the ground part a bit more, with people and perhaps a car or two, if there is room. But I'll do that after finishing the "Gang".

04 April 2005, 09:40 PM

04 April 2005, 10:52 PM
Hi Andreas, looking good here, like the idea and execution!

04 April 2005, 11:15 AM (

Turned down to the Alcaponis. It's a semi-detailed paintover, to get the overall feeling of colors, lighting and expressions. I merged the 3d Tommygun layer and painted over them (cheating!). I changed the personal bodyguard's position a bit and widened the canvas, too. I also tweaked the contrast a bit in Photoshop but I still feel the lower part is a bit too dark.

04 April 2005, 05:05 PM
Shouldn't the floor be lit by the sky? (i got some Yoda grammar going on there). I think that a blueish color would help lighten the lower part as you say, and seperate the characters form the rest of the pic. Just a thought...

04 April 2005, 05:09 PM

I 2nd that.. but anyway whats going on man! I love your mob action going down here! This is a very unique entry! I cant wait to see how it turns out! Are you using brown for your color scheme?

04 April 2005, 07:02 PM (

I changed the canvas size a bit to introduce a bit more of the surrounding urban life. I also changed the buildings' angle towards the camera a bit, but I feel that perhaps they are too far away. Perhaps I'll make the taller buildings in the center go beyond the limit of the canvas.

GaeasHerald - Thanks for the suggestions. Very helpful.

CoreyArtE - Thanks, man! Yep, brownish "old photograph" colors are what I am aiming for. Perhaps I'll even turn this into a framed old photograph in the end, with some kind of message on the frame.

04 April 2005, 07:07 PM
Man, great art! I liked "the frame" idea. really cool stuff!
just keep it!:buttrock:

I'm agree with you about the buildings' angle.
Keep going.

Not at all! They aren't too far away to me...I think its just perfect actually. I dont know if making tall buildings will really be the best idea but fool around with it and show us so we can help you out some. The tall buildings might distract the viewers eyes from the main focus , the just be careful about that! Latest update is looking sweet, I love this thread!

Oh, and mabe you should try aiming the main mobster's head upward more..Like he's looking down but his head is tilted up...might give some better perspective, and a more sleak/smooth attitude towards the master figure.

04 April 2005, 09:34 PM
Great! Funny and powerful. Good luck for the challenge!

04 April 2005, 09:35 PM
now that is one hip picture right there. rock on :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 10:34 PM
Funny and cool style.

04 April 2005, 07:53 AM
this is coming along great.. i like the "older" colours, youve kept true to the feeling of the mob days.. its got Style!

04 April 2005, 07:55 AM
this is one of my favourite, keep goin pal, eager to see ur final results, :scream:  :bounce:

04 April 2005, 05:34 PM
Color's are really coming out nicely- the detail on the Boss's face is amazing so far.
The building angle is better now as well, gives it a bigger feel.

04 April 2005, 06:15 AM
One thing I think that your piece is losing that your concet captured so well is the dynamic quality the Don gave to the piece. In your most current rendition you have the Don squred off and looking straight, which I think might be overbalancing the picture some. While, in your concept piece you had him looking one particular direction which i liked.

I only notice this because I'm struggeling like hell with current composition with the one im working on, and trying to find a back ground that will help it out.

Great stuff though, I'm really enjoying this one.

04 April 2005, 10:00 PM (

I changed a couple of things that I wasn't too happy about in the previous version, and which some of you pointed out. I changed the city in the background to a more triangular shape to add some tension and accentuate the hierarchy idea (which was partially lost with the new position of the bodyguards). The boss got the biggest change. I turned him to the side looking upwards giving him a more unpreoccupied self-assured stance, not caring about the viewer. His clothes also changed, but I am not happy with it, yet. The bodyguards were too way in the back, so I changed their size to match with the boss. They should look more like statues now, I hope. I also added a couple more Alcaponis, filling the frame (you can never have too many). And, at the end, I made a few color tweaks, searching for some contrast, because it was looking a bit bland. Its a bit dark now, but I will correct that later. It is a bit sketchy now, but that is because it is more a concept at the moment. I would like to know what you think. Should I go back to the previous version?

04 April 2005, 12:52 AM
Nop, keep it this way :). This new version has a better composition and a clearer focal point (the contrast on his clothes does help with that). The colors are too agressive ATM IMO (god this forum language is ruinning my english!), specially the floor, but there's plenty of time to fix that. As for the Alcaponis, the more, the better!

04 April 2005, 12:59 AM
Great work! ... but I have a question: Do U make any shadow layer before painting it?

04 April 2005, 05:03 AM
IMHO you don't need to do so many minions  But two bodyguards became much and much better. And about Don.. Realy don't know. Maybe better, maybe not. Old don looks in my eyes, that makes me focus on him. But new Don is... mmm... much realistic i think :) IMHO u should continue working on new version :applause:

04 April 2005, 06:45 AM (

Thanks, guys. Your opinion means a lot to me and gives me more confidence. I'll sure keep it this way now, but perhaps I'll remove some Alcaponis and substitiute them with some people walking by in the background.

GaeasHerald - Thanks for all your replies. You're helping me a lot. Yep, the colors are too agressive, but I'll correct that. I'm still not quite sure what I am going to do with the floor. Perhaps I'll put one of those red metal things, where water comes out for the firemen (I don't what it's called in English)

guga3008 - Thanks! Nope, no shadow layer. Just one layer for painting.

D1tus - Thanks...yeah, perhaps I'll reduce the number of Alcaponis. Don't really know yet. I also changed the bodyguards a bit in this latest update.

04 April 2005, 07:01 AM
This is looking nicer every time I check, great work. I really like this concept.

04 April 2005, 07:52 AM
This is goin' to end up really cool. Maybe the kingpin should have a more flashy outfit, yellow maybe :) . Keep it up dude.

04 April 2005, 09:09 AM
very good draw, very good anbiance and very good color, i like this pic and i wait the suite, very very good work:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 11:55 AM
Hi there Andi! Long time no speak...

I liked the "humor call" of the hand over one of the little mobsters... Maybe now it's "hard to get" since you've scaled them... I think it gave the boss a more "sun of a not so fine lady" look and it sure was a funny ideia. Now he looks more "classy", but in the overall, I think the image lost some charm... If you ever put it back, maybe the unfortunate mini-mobster that has the hand on his head should be in great effort to support the weight... (no offense to the mob's nutritionist). Maybe he could be looking up and a bit more shrunk than the others.

Some of the guys holding the guns have an expression too hard not to be shootting at something... are they going to? If they do, you'll have something to fill the floor...:)

It's looking great so far... your work always keep's remindind me that artist grow on dedication.

um abraço!

04 April 2005, 12:19 PM
i think ill call them mini mes:D i love ur work man, it is funny and made with some truly impressive skills!

04 April 2005, 03:49 PM
it's funny to see some colors on your piece :) I was expected that you'll do it in a more B&W direction... Anyway that's something that can be tested when your piece will be finished :)

I like it alot ! More original than the other stuff on this contest

04 April 2005, 06:05 PM
New composition and colors are looking great. I do think it breaks it up a little too much to have the 4th goon (from the left) pushed into the back- if you're gonna do that, you should probably push another one or two back, or bring that guy to the front more.

04 April 2005, 07:28 AM (

Not a big update. This is more to reply to all you guys. Thank-you very much. It's really great to get feedback (as if you didn't know!)

arlutik - Thanks!

taz23 - I hope so. Thanks. Your entry really rocks! I tried yellow, but I think it was too much of a clash. Instead I saturated the wine color a bit more.

MDN67 - Thank-you very much. It's difficult sometimes to add things, and not think that I am screwing it all up.

BVentura - Yo "Beeeeee". Atão, man!!! Thanks for the insightful thoughts. You're right. The image lost something when dropped the ~"squashed-Alcaponi" idea. The arm seemed too long. But I think I will try to implement it again, now that I turned the boss.
About the shooting. I think I will leave them like that, because I don't want any action in the image. It should be something calm. And if I put gunshells on the floor, it will seem like they have been shooting. If they were shooting the boss and bodyguards would never look that calm. The Alcaponis are in that position and have that expression all the time. But I understand what you mean, and you're right. I just hope it won't ruin the image the way they are.
Thanks, man. Abração!

nebezial - Thanks...Mini Mes...hehe. Could be. Your painting skills are awesome, and your knowledge of anatomy is really impressive.

bonestudio - B&W...perhaps. But with some color. I will try it in the end...perhaps make everything grayscale except for the Don. Thanks!

sidchagan - Thanks...I'm sorry, I didn't quite understand what you meant with the Alcaponis, but I will try to balance them more. They are still very rough.

04 April 2005, 10:40 AM
IMHO previous Don was better  I don't know why.. Maybe this glasses, or something else, but he was much atmospheric/// Real DON ))

And I think it would be better for composition to make him look on the left (as on later pictures).

But everything else is wonderfull, your topic is in my favorites:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 07:11 PM
haha nice idea and great picture!

I think the servant gangsters in frond have to much contrast.
And you could go more saturated on the skintones of the boss.

It's coming up really great
waiting for more!

04 April 2005, 07:26 PM
Dude, sorry I haven't been following this thread... awesome stuff! Will check back now that I know it's here... good luck!

(man, there are just too many talented artists to keep up with on this thread!! amazing...)

04 April 2005, 11:24 PM
Hehe, whether you understood what I meant or not, somehow the alcaponis seem more balanced now with the colorwork :P. Their positions look fine now.
Speaking of colorwork, the boss is looking increasingly awesome.

04 April 2005, 12:11 PM (

Closeup of the Don's face.

04 April 2005, 12:12 PM
oh shite excellent detail!

04 April 2005, 12:17 PM (

Made a couple of overall changes to format and colors, aiming for a more monochrome look, giving more emphasis to the Don. Also started the detailing the Don's face as you can see in the closeup posted before.

D1tus - I hope the Don is looking better now. I will keep him looking to the right. Somehow he looks more secure. Thanks.

Goro - Thanks! The Don has more saturated colors on his face now. I'll correct the contrast on the Alcaponis later. Thanks for pointing it out.

Artjunkie -'re right. There are too many talented artists competing. It's hard to follow!...but all the more interesting.

Sidchagan - Thanks, man! I hope this last step didn't screw up anything.

04 April 2005, 02:04 PM
Andreas - It's looking good so far! I really love the close-up of the big guy's face. I'm sure all the faces will look that great when you're done.

I don't know about the hat though. It's now perfectly round and it's red (which it didn't start out as.) It's kind of reminding me of a hat that would be worn by a pimp in some '70s movie.... Sorry! Just the whole color red is making me think that - more pimp than mobster. But another thing is the shape - I really thought the shape of the hat with the indent in it (as in your post #100) was very effective, and very much said "mobster" to me. Maybe even just changing back that one detail will help it read better.

But anyhow, maybe that's just me. And it's still looking great. Look forward to many more updates! :-)

04 April 2005, 03:24 PM
Hi Andreas
Great topic for your illustration. Very funny too! I like the caricature aspect of them all and the variety of face expressions. I just fell the Don has very short legs. This is common and normal in a cartoon but since we do not see them he looks like he was partially underground. I think that showing the legs (giving some space bettwen the people in the foreground) or making him a little taller will help. For the rest excellent! Good luck!

04 April 2005, 11:14 PM (

Changed the colors a bit. Thanks to Walrus who pointed out that "Don" looked more like pimp than a mobster. I also made some general value-trageted corrections. The value balance looked awful in the previous step. I think, things look better now.

Walrus - Hey, Mike! Thanks for pointing out about the hat and the red. You're absolutely right, he looked more like a pimp than a mobster. Sometimes I get carried away, and forgot how I started. Sometimes it's good to experiment new things and see what comes out. Most of the times I compare my current step with the one before, to check if nothing got worse. However, many times I oversee such errors. Our brain is a strange thing sometimes. I hope "Don" looks better now.

Kaparo - Thanks! I'll try and make "Don's" legs more visible. Thanks for pointing it out.

04 April 2005, 06:23 AM
Last picture is great! Keep going with the details!

04 April 2005, 11:39 AM (

D1tus - thanks!

I detailed the faces some more, both the Alcaponis and the bodyguards. I also added a red tint to the Alcaponis' faces to make them really look like spoiled little brats with Tommyguns. By the way, I used a photo of actor Henry Silva (kindly donated by Simon Dominic aka Baron Impossible) for the bodyguards' faces.

The background also got some detailing, but I will finish it only after all the figures are done. I also decided to introduce a middleground with some urban life going on, because there was a too wide gap between characters and background. I think it is more cohese now.

04 April 2005, 04:22 PM
Ha! Excellent, the two Henrys look really mean (especially the one on the right) and it was a good idea to make them thin whilst the other guys are fat. The strong colours work well, gives a sort of evening tint to the scene. The only thing I can think of is to add a bit of that orangy / pink to the horizon and merge it into the blue. At the moment the blue sky is slightly too "separate" from the landscape. Great stuff!

04 April 2005, 04:28 PM
yay great pic, reminds me of Reno in Fallout and u get
12,317 points for that !

(the points can be exchanged for gaming chips at 1:1 ratio
at the Reno Casinos)

04 April 2005, 04:30 PM
Brilliant image mate

I like the details you're introducing into the background. This piece makes me grin every time I check it out, i think it's coz it reminds of the "Anthill Mob" in that cartoon that ran on telly many moons ago...wacky Races?.

Anyway, keep it up, its looking spot on!

04 April 2005, 06:23 PM
Ah, that's looking a lot better to me on a lot of different levels, Andreas! The color changes to the Don and to the Alcoponis' faces (I love the reasoning behind that!) And begginning to add the middle- and background has really solidified things. Looking good! Glad my earlier suggestion was helpful, as I have none to add right now. :-)

04 April 2005, 06:23 PM
dammmmm coooll concept!

04 April 2005, 07:34 PM
Coool the city in the background is starting to take shape, very nice work

04 April 2005, 10:23 PM
One of the most original entries I've seen.
Also very funny!

(O Don faz-me lembrar o Nicolau Breyner!:D )

Good luck!

04 April 2005, 10:37 PM
yeey! looks much better now. gogogo

04 April 2005, 02:39 AM
Great stuff...maybe putting some people/bystander that look scared on background would be great.

Nice to see you again in this league.

Good luck.

04 April 2005, 02:40 AM
Sooo much better! You've toned down the scene and added some details to the background, making it easier to understand the perspective and scale. Bravo! I would take it a step further and add some atmospherics to help blend colors the BG and FG, as well as the sky. Imo the Don looks a bit too tanned, I would expect him to be quite pale . That's all I can think of for now, the rest is comming along very nicely :)

04 April 2005, 10:39 AM
just like fallout2

04 April 2005, 07:56 AM
Yo Andy!

Your piece is one of my favs in the contest! Love the mob approach! just continue with the fresh crispy goodness you're doing!

cheery, Adam

04 April 2005, 11:55 AM
always a very good work the foreground integrate very welle with the background

04 April 2005, 09:16 PM
woww ! the greatest concept by far , i saw the progress of your work since the begining
and i like it very much :)

lasting memories
04 April 2005, 09:34 PM
hahaha... nice midgets

04 April 2005, 12:35 PM
where is updates!? =))

04 April 2005, 11:04 PM (

Baron Impossible - Thanks! I owe the Henrys to you! I changed the sky hues to a more purple/green scheme. I hope it works. But it still needs a lot of detailing.

Squibbit - Thanks, I guess. Everybody keeps talking about Fallout 2 but I don't have the slightest idea what it is.

bumphluff - Thank-you very much! Yeah...Wacky Races! I realize more and more that this image is full of influences from cartoons and films I watched in the past. It's funny how it all comes together.

walrus - Thanks, Mike...your pointing out the flaws was a big help. Thanks. If you find more, please point them out.

oro - Thanks, man!

arlutik - Thanks. I am also very fond of the city in the background. Makes me want to do a painting of just a city. Perhaps after the Challenge.

SoniaNotRed - Obrigadão, Sónia. Por acaso também me fez lembrar o Nicoulau Breyner.

Goro - Thanks...I'm going, going, going.

cabertevon - Thanks. Scared people in the back...hmmm. I am afraid it would detract a bit, but I'll definitely implement some bystanders.

GaeasHerald - Thank-you. You're right about him looking too tanned. I'll probably change that.

Willy Bradberry - Again...Fallout2...I know it's a game, but nothing more...

Adamos - Thanks. I'm glad you appreciate it.

MDN67 - Thanks. I was quite pleased after integrating the middleground and bringing everything together.

punklover - Thanks.

lasting memories - I'm thinking of naming them.

D1tus - Here is the update...

04 April 2005, 11:45 PM
Lookin' good. Keep up the good work.

04 April 2005, 07:07 PM
Hello, brilliant it is necessary really that you put all ton energy in this image for which is super, go, go

04 April 2005, 08:55 PM
I love this one! The little guys are awesome! The perspective is great, very good work! Look forward to seeing this ine done!

04 April 2005, 06:47 AM (

I haven't posted in a while...Not many changesm, though. It seems now that most changes have little effect on the overall image, but I hope that's a good thing. I decided to rearrange the Alcaponis, but I am still not entirely happy with their poses and expressions. I also dropped two of them, because I think it was becoming a bit too cluttered. Like this, I have more space to show some of the urban life behind.

Thank-you very much, Malachi, Tranchefeux and fensterer.

04 April 2005, 01:56 PM
I'll have this as a wallpaper when you'll finish it man! Heh, superb so far

04 April 2005, 08:30 PM

Hi, always my encouragement for one of painting prefers for this challenge

04 April 2005, 08:53 PM
Haha! Extreme cool! Maybe you could do the scale of the "master" even bigger compared to the servants? :) but it works compositionally very well now,

04 April 2005, 11:36 PM (

I made an overall color correction, and did an overall paint-over to correct faulty shadow areas by temporarily pushing up the Display Gamma.

taz23 - Man...what an honour! I hope that when I finish it, it will be up to your standards, 'cos your entry rocks big time!

Tranchefeux - Thank-you very much, Eric...Like Mihai above, it is an honour to hear such kind words coming from you, after seeing what you can do.

TeemuR - Thanks...perhaps I will make him a bit bigger. Don't know yet.

04 April 2005, 11:54 PM
The color tone looks good, its comic out more realistic while retaining the comical look. I particularly like the face on the second guy (I keep forgetting what they're called)

04 April 2005, 12:29 AM
jajaja....hey andreas thats nice to see you again with this trhead, that is very cool man,
can't wait to see the final image:bowdown:

04 April 2005, 03:37 PM
Hehehe - cute. Awesome work Andreas. I love it.

04 April 2005, 10:21 PM (

Thanks, guys!

Here is another closeup. The progress is quite slow now. I thought I had gone off with a good start at first, but lately I am correcting so many things on the image...proportions, colors, values. But I think I am on the right track again.
I changed the whole image into grayscale, applying color on a separate layer. The colors were really getting out of hand, so I decided to start over. I have to be more disciplined in the future and not pick colors from the color wheel but from a limited preselected range of colors.

04 April 2005, 06:58 AM
Wow, great details dude, I love their face gestures, bad ass gangsters :applause:

04 April 2005, 10:48 PM (

There seem to be each time less diferences with the previous posts...but there are improvements (I hope). The Alcaponis are about 70% done. I'll use the remaining 30% to detail some parts and clean them up.'re da man!

04 April 2005, 11:34 PM
I love all the different expressions on the little guys... This is looking quite awesome!

04 April 2005, 12:11 PM
This is really funny! I get a good laugh everytime I see it. Really well done with all the different facial expressions. Reminds me of a certain pizza commercial, but hey!.........forget about it!:)

04 April 2005, 03:32 PM
jaja man...your thread is getting better, Thats very cool.

04 April 2005, 04:29 PM
Wow i love this godfather feeling to it hahhaha. It's nice to see them all firing the guns. WOuld give a more dramatic feel to it.

04 April 2005, 07:55 PM
Fallout 1 & 2 in my opinion are amongst the best computer
games ever made.
It's a role playing game with turn-based combat that takes
place in the US that has been mostly wiped out in a nuclear
In Fallout 1 You play a character that has been born and
raised in a nuclear shelter deep below ground. The life support
system of the fallout shelter fails and you embark on your
first journey to the outside world, trying to find a way to fix
the life support system.
A series of amazing, fun adventures later you become a big
hero in the deadly ,radiated world inhabited by mutants,
zombies and humans.
In Fallout 2 you play the descendant of that great hero and
go through another awesome set of adventures fighting
and befriending them zombies , mutants, robots, aliens,
cats , dogs and people. You got weapons from knives to
rifles to power fists to assault rifles ... all the way to
plasma guns, bazookas and miniguns. And fighting , although
can be found in abundance, isn't nearly the only thing you
can do in Fallout, no sir! You get and hone your skills like
gecko skinning , scouting , gambling , kama sutra master and
excellent excrement expeditor and who knows what to
Speaking of gambling , there is a city in Fallout called Reno,
which is run by gangsters , some of which look just like the
ones you depicted , plenty of gambling in that town, reckless
women too - and fighting!
There is not an atom in my body that wouldn't recommend this
game, totally worth every penny (and it's pretty cheap nowadays,
being an older game) :deal:

Yours truly,
The Chosen One ;):D

04 April 2005, 08:45 PM
cool piece:thumbsup: since i'm a big fan of sopranos, so i find this piece awesome;] i like that it suggest to look at mafia at a different view.. speeking about the little guys i like the second from the left the best:)

04 April 2005, 10:19 PM
Hey, the tall guy on the left looks a bit flat and pale, as opposed to previous updates. For now that's my only critique worth mentioning, you already know what i think about your piece

( )

05 May 2005, 07:56 PM (

I have been detailing all the characters for these last few days. The Alcaponis are almost done. Their shoes need some more work and I'll do some overall detail refinement in the end. The Don is also done with some detailing still to go. The bodyguards still need some more work, specially the one on the left.
But what still needs a lot of work is the background. I changed over to Photoshop to enhance contrast and play with colors. I think I managed to give more depth to the overall image. 17 days to go, which is enough I hope.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm glad everybody shares my sense of humour, although I think this last update toned the humour a bit down, making the scene look a bit more serious.

05 May 2005, 09:05 PM
I like it very much! :)
Fine technique and nice idea!
Well done! :)

05 May 2005, 04:15 AM
Wow Andreas

Your image is looking amazing, I love the detail you put on the lower city, are you going to do the same on the buildings, like little windows?

I love your concept and you did an amazing job with it.

05 May 2005, 01:58 PM
I'm really enjoining your trhead, i like a lot the funny faces of the little men:scream:

05 May 2005, 02:04 PM
Wow this is really coming along. Its looking brilliant. I hope you can keep the contrasting background from left to right, it looks well smart. Cant wait to see the finished piece. Good luck!!

05 May 2005, 02:09 PM
I like these guys facial expressions!! very very well done!! keep up to details!!

05 May 2005, 02:23 PM
hehe, very cool, if you'd add a seventh little man you could call the composition a ganster called snowwhite ;). as for the lower city, i hoped to see more old subways/a nightclub called roxy/ a casino/ loadsa oldtimers/-20ies-50ties sort of things around, also the little paperboy or other typical gangster story actors in place, the skyline actually reminds me a lot the scene where someone sais "welcome to the ..."...but thats just me. hehe
keep up the great work,

05 May 2005, 06:44 AM (

Thanks for the replies, as always.

I introduced some color to liven things up and did some more detailing on the Alcaponis.

05 May 2005, 08:14 AM
what a great piece! I love it.

05 May 2005, 08:19 AM
Is that Danny de Vito second to right?? :D

Great piece. I'd add some shells from the tommy guns laying on the ground..

05 May 2005, 08:39 AM
Hi, what a funny and unique pic you have! I love it! But u have much work on the background city... and why the back 2 bodyguard so tall like the "master" Al?

keep posting

cheers: Kornél

05 May 2005, 10:59 AM
always a good pic, with an very nice composition, i wait the suite of the work on the BG

05 May 2005, 11:04 AM
Mate, this is a great image. You're introduction of more colour into the "grunts" in the foreground works nicely. I also like the threatening sky looming on the background....excellent.

Maybe you could implement some pinstipes on the godfathers suit, define him even more as the head honcho (it would also be indicative of his wealth...affording him the luxury of a better tailor then his minions)

Quality stuff

05 May 2005, 12:22 PM
aargh damn this work, its so frickin evocative, it makes me wanna hum the godfather tune and at the same time sing EEEvil Evil is his one and only naaameee lookin great:D

05 May 2005, 12:24 PM
*slaps nebz*

i love godfather, and also this pic,godfather/scarface make a speech bubble saying *say hello to my little friends...and their little friends*

05 May 2005, 12:31 PM
*slaps nebz*
nebz blocks and then they fight woaaa! lol, but seriously its great skill and originality:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 12:40 PM (

After working too much on the image I am becoming color blind. It's always good to show the image to my colleagues at work who can give me fresh critcism. So I decided to change the color scheme to a more nostalgic look. I have two versions now, and I don't really know which one to pick. What do you think? I think I prefer the first.

05 May 2005, 01:57 PM
I agree with you.The first add a "retro" feeling like in the Thirties.. That's look more "mafia"'s good! maybe with your final image, you will add an effect like an old movie..

Brown color give a unity at your image..

You should try to add two car (old cars of course) behind the character...Now it is necessary to see if that will not overload your's just a personal it's up to you:) ..

Good luck!

05 May 2005, 02:06 PM
I think the one wher you first introduced color looks the best in my opinion. That one still has that old feel to it, but with the color it seems to have more depth!

Looks good though no matter what you decide!

05 May 2005, 04:42 PM
Yes, I agree that the top, more brown one has more of an authentic, nostalgic feel to it. However, the Alcaponis are getting lost on what's behind them. I feel that the bottom, redder one reads better.

05 May 2005, 04:47 PM
I love the bottom one, but the top one as a feeling of old image that is really cool

05 May 2005, 04:48 PM
yes boy...i think tha the first one looks better.
But remember, that there's no mafia that's a mythe.

05 May 2005, 04:58 PM
I'm still big on the guys having red suits. It adds more to the image as well as holding great sinister connotations! (Those guys have got "tommy guns" in their hands after all - think of all the claret spilled in the St. Valentines day massacre etc.)

Its still good no matter which way you go tho.

05 May 2005, 06:51 PM
Hi, For your tests, I like both, but I think that the first is more modern, you could carry out a test of old colors of this time, for your super painting. Go, go

05 May 2005, 09:28 PM
I would mix both - a touch of color on the first or a bit less saturation on the second.

05 May 2005, 09:30 PM
I like the first one more. But SoniaNotRed might have something with mixing them.

05 May 2005, 10:03 PM
Both look great, but I'd go with the darker one on top. Somehow the fact that it looks more serious in tone actually complements the humor in the faces.

05 May 2005, 11:05 PM
haha super:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 11:36 PM (

So many replies! Thank-you very much! Your comments are very helpful. I decided to go fot the second color scheme but toning the colors down a bit. I also enlarged the canvas a bit to the sides and added a couple of trees, but I am not entirely sure about these. Perhaps I will substitute them with some signage posts.
I hope you like it.

05 May 2005, 01:33 AM
My goodness! I have been missing this thread! It is so great!!! What fantastic characters you have created!! How about adding terrified onlookers in the background. Right now they look sillly without anyone around for them to threaten.

All the best!!

05 May 2005, 06:44 AM
Cool concept, one of my fav so far, keep up the good work!

05 May 2005, 06:48 AM (

Thanks Jeramoo and Romero.
I enlarged the canvas even more, trying to give the whole scene a more cinematic format, and leaving more space to show the surroundings. I also dropped the trees...Finally I added some cloud photos in overlay mode just to give the sky a bit more detail, but I will still paint over it.

05 May 2005, 11:24 AM
Atão, Andi mah man! Long time no see!
This is getting pretty cool! A few crits: The tall guy to the left- his glasses should be a little further away from the face, and perhaps down a bit.
If the light is coming mostly from the right, the three leftmost character's faces should be more in shadow.
I love the relief in the bosses face, that's one ugly mother****er!
Keep up the good work!

05 May 2005, 11:40 AM
I enlarged the canvas even more, trying to give the whole scene a more cinematic format, and leaving more space to show the surroundings. I also dropped the trees...Finally I added some cloud photos in overlay mode just to give the sky a bit more detail, but I will still paint over it.

yea this new one looks good

05 May 2005, 09:54 AM (

Ok...nearing the end of the Challenge. I did some sky/clouds detailing, but perhaps I overdid it and made the sky too dramatic. I will have to ponder on that. I also made some overall color adjustments. I don't know if I made it too bright. Sometimes it's difficult because of all the different monitors out there and the different light conditions in my room. But anyway...I hope you like it.

Obrigadão Carlos!...
Thanks Squibbit.

05 May 2005, 10:05 AM
the details on the BG are very good, car and others thing. Very good pic

05 May 2005, 10:20 AM
you win....

05 May 2005, 01:35 PM
Hey, Andi, looking good! I like the colors you've gone with. And at least on this monitor that I'm on right now, the values are reading perfectly. The clouds are looking nice too, but yeah, I agree, perhaps a bit too dramatic.

I like the new background details a lot more than the trees that were in there before. These really give it an appropriate urban setting. I wonder if it could help perspective a bit to make the front cars a bit larger, so they don't look so much like just teensy cars...

One last note: The two tall-men flanking the boss: With dark clothes and dark features set on dark buildings, they get a bit hard to read. Have you considered pumping up the hilights on appropriate places like the guns and the glasses to make them read a bit better on the dark backdrop? Just an idea...

Anyhow, looking great and amlmost there abd plenty of time for you... Good luck!

05 May 2005, 02:21 PM
hey there, really good idea /concept, i like the way you execute this so dramatically...
i like the sky how it is..;-)

05 May 2005, 04:19 PM
how do i miss this piece!!

I love the expression and stylization of this piece. I think the brightness overall is nice, atleast on my monitor. Nice, dynamic composition.... Great stuff man!

05 May 2005, 04:36 PM
Brilliant piece of work, plenty of character, plenty of movement, plenty of drama, what more can we ask for?

Check out mine and let me know what you think :

All feedback very appreciated!!

Hello my good friend Handy!

Nice work you have done here, it looks great in my monitor.

I like the sky details and the light on the scene.

Hope to hear you say "It's finished..."

Thanks for all the replies. You guys are great!

I came up with this alternative, which I am not quite sure about at the moment. It is not so detailed as the previous solution, and I ask you to take that into account. What do you think? The first or the second?

MDN67 - Thanks...but I have to work more on the details. They don't look so good when you see the bigger version.

walrus - Thanks, always. Your comments were quite helpful. I tried to address them in this new alternative. And I will definitely size the cars up, now that you mentioned it.

fantasio - Thanks. Although I don't know if dramatic is the right environment here.

xric7 - Thanks to you, too. I'm glad you like it.

LuisNCT - Tank-you very much. I'm glad I can make everybody laugh a bit when they see the image.

beelow - Thanks dude.

MDQ - Thanks. I had quite much fun doing everything. I hope you can see that in the image.

freakjc - Thanks Joshua. This is quite different in style from your great Kong entry. It's nice to see everybody appreciating each other's work and different styles.

demonicoz - Thanks, man. But I keep finding flaws...and sometimes I am not happy at all with it. I think that is why I came up with this alternative. More simple and easier to read.

NinjASSN - Thanks Blaz for your support.

hugodesign - Atão...'migo. It'll be finished, probably on the last day before the end. There are always things to correct.

Awesome entry, I keep checking back, can't believe I haven't commented yet. I really like the 2nd background better. The ominous clouds add so much to the atmosphere. That and they go well with the cigars if you know what I mean. ;)

05 May 2005, 08:46 AM
Wow, dude, this is getting better and better. Hope you'll have time to finish the background city. I have the same problem you know :) .

05 May 2005, 08:58 AM
The one with the clouds for sure. Adds so much to the atmosphere as well as to the composition. Black background behind the godfothers back and his look turned into the bright. Perfect...

05 May 2005, 09:14 AM
:) interesting !!man

05 May 2005, 09:56 AM
wow, great work! I prefer the version with no trees, and a car, in the background. But I find this background seems a little too... background. I mean, the characters don't really look like if they were integred to the scene, they are in front of it. So I think it would be cool to add a couple of imposing building on the sides...
And aslo, it would reinforce the mafia-feeling if you would add some bundles of dollars somewhere. Oh, that's maybe not a very good idea...
Also, I preferred the pose of the boss where he had the hand on the hat of one of his gangsters. It created a nice master-and-servant impression... more than here...
Keep up the awesome work, man!

05 May 2005, 11:10 PM
Yeah, defo! I'm with the cloudy sky/buildings lot meself! It gives it loads more brooding atmosphere. A fun pic, and a good composition that's just great to look at! :)

05 May 2005, 11:22 PM
I definitely favor the fetailed version with the wrecked car more and
I also think the few dollar bills somewhere, hey maybe in a violin case,
might do the pic good

Ok...I think I am entering the final coloring phase, which will take me the whole week to finish. Based on some of the comments (very helpful ones) I decided to keep the dramatic sky (which now also looks much better to me than the other foggy background) and changed the arms/hands of the Don (thanks François).
Today the morning was quite cloudy here in Lisbon, which was great, because it was exactly the kind of sky I wanted. Couple of photos, some stitching and Photoshop work and I had the sky I wanted. Not the most ethic way of "painting" but I think nowadays it's normal to do it. I also added some people nearer to the "mafiosos". Thanks for your help, everyone.

liiga - Thanks Liiga. Decided to go for the cloudy background. And I will add some smoke to the cigar in the end.

taz23 - Thanks, man. I think I will keep the background kinda foggy, unfinished. But it still needs work.

NinjaASSN - Thanks for pointing out the better aspects of the cloud solution, Blaz. You're completely right.

StormrageJunior - Thank-you, François. Well, as you see, I integrated most of what you said. Your comments were quite helpful for this last update.

Poshspice - Yo, Aly! Always great to hear good things from you. Thanks. Your entry is really looking awesome.

05 May 2005, 12:15 AM
yes man , i like a lot the detail of the hand on the head of that.......little man, is very funny, and the background is great:eek:

05 May 2005, 06:22 AM
I like your concept
I love all of the colors
cheers and good luck :applause:

Closeup of my favourite Alcaponi.

05 May 2005, 12:37 PM (

After looking at my last update a few days ago, I realized that had I considerably screwed some things. Sometimes I really can't see what I am doing wrong. So I looked at my last posts, and went back to the one I liked most. I added a texture layer to liven things up. The background still needs work, and perhaps the characters need a touch here and there. I hope you like it and the 3 closeups.

05 May 2005, 12:39 PM (

Closeup of the Don\'s face.

05 May 2005, 05:03 PM
I really like the paint style on this and the concept is quite clever.Good luck

05 May 2005, 05:26 PM
Hey rocha...nice updates and are doing a really good work and i'm ejoin it.
But i like more when you draw the hand of the don taking his cigarrette:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 10:11 AM ('s almost finished. I dropped the previous texture layer because it was too agressive. I added a glow layer and a new texture layer. The city's buildings also got some detailing, but there are still things to be done there.

05 May 2005, 02:13 PM
Hi Andreas! Just a quick stop by to say that I think u should blur those clouds a bit.. right now they r a bit too much messy, especially on the left side. But this is just my opinion, a thing that brought my atteniton. Otherwise is a great pic and congratulation on finishing it in a such an awesome way! :)

05 May 2005, 05:46 PM
Andreas, you are almost done great work, you did a super job on your city the amount of details is stunning, best of luck

05 May 2005, 06:01 PM
Andreas - Almost there... It's looking good! I rally like the sky right now, and respectfully disagree with Blaz about needing more blur. But there are two little things catching my eye that I thought i'd point out:

The sky on the left side feels like a different hue from the sky on the right side, and visa versa too. I have a preference for the left hue - the redder purpler colors match the buildings and the warmth in the ground more, and a re a little more ominous and less sunny - but it's just a bit distracting when they don't match.

Secondly, some more shadows on your favorite Alcaponi's hat might help clarify what's going on with the Don's arm and hand. I think it's resting on the Alcaponi's head, but i'm not certain because there are now shadows from the hand on the hat. A bit more shading there could help make that clear.

...And then you're done! :)

Good luck with the last little bits!

05 May 2005, 12:39 AM (

Thanks for the remarks, guys. They were really helpful and I tried to implement them on this last update. There are still some hands that need reworking, the hats look a bit two dimensional and the background needs more detailing. I cleaned the overall characters to make everything smoother and cleaner. Tomorrow will be the last day.

05 May 2005, 07:42 AM (

Some more detailing on the background, some placement adjustments and color corrections.

05 May 2005, 09:24 PM
Looking Good! Nice Work!
Good Luck:)

05 May 2005, 11:17 PM

Finally. Too close to the end. I'll have to be more careful next time. I learned a lot, like in the last challenge. Now comes a pause...and then the next Challenge. Thanks to everybody who took their time to comment on my progress. It was very helpful as always. Also, a great thanks to my colleagues at work, whose appreciations were of great value to me. CYA

Looking at the colors in my previous "Final Image" submission I realized the colors were somewhat wrong, so I tweaked them in Photoshop. I was lucky to be able to upload my final image again.

05 May 2005, 01:15 AM
Great job Andreas! Congrats! You've been very consistent all the way through. Best of lucK

05 May 2005, 09:18 PM
Andreas, I love the final version! You've slightly de-saturated it! BTW, you've posted it in the finaly finished section, but it's ended up in the 3D part... in case you were wondering where it was...

05 May 2005, 09:26 PM
Thanks, Aly, for pointing it out. I really screwed up with that one.

05 May 2005, 11:40 PM
Andreas, loved your work from the beginning and came to congratulate you on your fantastic final image. wish you all the best in the final. best of luck and keep on rocking!

Great work, Andi! Congrats for finishing. It came out looking really nice. Good luck in the judging...!

05 May 2005, 05:05 PM
wow, i love the 'godfather' theme, great job bro! congratulations!!

05 May 2005, 05:07 PM
Extremely funky! I meant to post in here before, I have no idea why I didn't. This turned out to be a very cool image- sort of like a cross between Gangs of New York, The Godfather and an Al Capone film. The desaturation works well with the subject matter.

Good luck in the judging. I really want to see more of your stuff in the future!

05 May 2005, 07:44 PM
Brilliant. Excellent. Thumbs up. Two thumbs up.

Note: Now colors really better.

05 May 2005, 06:48 AM
Hey Andreas, I hav'nt seen this one since early on... great job mate, really cool characters. I think you probably could have really pushed the perspective on this but really like what you've done. I would have loved to see the buildings fade off into sepia at the sides to give it more of a movie poster look whilst adding to the depth.. you know, like a dirty foggy city, this would also place more focus on the characters... just an after thought. Real cool image and the detail is fantastic... best of luck with the judging
