Master: Rage
Servant: Berserker

Men are controlled by many emotions, yet, he is controlled by only one.
Once he goes into a stage of rage, there is no control over his actions,
he is a servant to his rage, and it controls his destiny.
Beware, for you may be his closest friend, yet his rage blinds him,
and he is totally under its command.

I think it might be difficult to read exactly that from a picture. Because he seems predominant in it and not his actual anger, that is far more abstract than his physical presence, get what I'm saying. I think you might have to symbolise that a bit more.

here is the profile and side view of my berserker, from which i will model the char. he is gonna have some heavy armour, plus not sure what im gonna do about the hair.

well, i was thinking of making the berserker sit on his knees, with a kinda discouraged, hopeless look, with him staring at his blood covered hands. this will be the main character.

and then, there will be a transparent, stronger looking version of himself, over himself, with burning eyes and rage filled face, teeth showing. this is his master, standing over him.

so the rage will be shown through this almost vision of what he becomes. hope you understand.

so, the end result will be this sorrow looking character horrified at what he just became, and what he did, while his other self (rage fille done) will be kinda like an aura around him, transparent.

what do you think?

basic weapon design. only gonna concentrate on the really detailed details once im happy with berserker itself, since he will be playing the main role.

i did the basic model for the berserker's head. i will define the chin a bit more from the neck once i have the whole neck going, i think. i will add some more details.

did most of the torso. did it too quickly, and so i had to do repair work most of the day. dont look at the arms, no detail yet, just quickly extruded that part. will prob also work a bit more on the stomache.

this is my 1st ever time that im trying to model a male anatomy. so, any crit would be appreciated.

the ear is finished, was just too lazy to attach it.

jmboekestein, thx, yeah, im really gonna take my time with facial expression. im gonna do a morph target for each one. im also thinking about maybe making some muscles flexing in the rage one. if i get it right, of course.

very cool, and smashing idea. Berserkers really are the slaves of their own fear and rage.

They are probably the most powerful warriors ever, but their power comes at a price. They lack freedom, they are trapped by their own power.

nice progress mordalles, the head might be a bit small in comparison with the torso, unless you are going for a comicbook Hulk type of design. Keep going!

Hi, Mordalles. Wow! Really good definition on the torso of your character. I can't believe how much you have improved from character to charater.

I think your concept is cool - way better than the modernday-man and the caveman (Not that it wasn't good idea).

I hope you don't mind if I point out some things on your charcter :).

First off, someone else mentioned that your character' s neck looks a bit thin. What you could do, is bulge those neck-muscles. They appear to be out of proportion when compared to all the other muscles.

You could also try to to give the bottom part of the palm more "body", especially the thumbs side. Don't be too scared to increase that area. One's eyes will accept it easier if it is slightly bigger than it is supposed to be, than if it were too small.

What you could also do, just to make your character's face seem a bit meaner, is to bring out the areas of the bottom jaw underneath the ears (I hope you know what I am talking about now). This will give him more of a musculine square jaw.

The rest seems pretty darn good so far :thumbsup: . I especially like the chest area. Some nice details in there. Good job.

i wanted to do something else a bit so i decided to model most of his clothes. there are stil a few things missing, like a belt accross chest, end part of boots, and some other accessories.
i gave him some armdguards and shinguardsm plus a belt. the belt will have some of sign or emblem on it. the cloth will be covered in fur (for now).
also an earring.

snows, i made the head a bit bigger.
arramor, i extended the neck a bit.
anim8or_7, i made his neck muscles bulge a bit more, and made his thumb palm area a bit bigger.

im still dont know what to do about the head. i have 3 options, 1. keep him bald, 2. give him some sort of hairstyle, have no idea which one, 3. a cool looking helmet. im cant decide which one. at the moment idd say helmet, but since his facial expression will be important, i must be careful how much of the face the helmet covers. maybe just a skull cap or something.
just to be clear, the shinguards are the bottom to parts, the 3rd part is actually the boot underneath it. it will be clearer with textures.

im really enjoying this challenge! :)

Your progress is good, I agree with Arramor, maybe give him a nice hairstyle later on. The ponytail might work, I dont know, but yeah, jou werk kom an, hou so voort mnr!

I think Daddy Mack is right. You can Flesh out your character's palms even more. You could also bring out those cushion areas where the fingers are attached to the hands.

As I said before, don' t be afraid to bring out that jaw. Personally, I think it would add to your character's powerful look. Just a thought.

i tried to design a helmet for the berserker. there are still thing missing. like skulls and stuff and extra detail. also, with textures il try to make some extra details. maybe also 2 horns coming out of each side.

daddy mack, thanks for the comments! i made the palm area more a bit larger. i aggree, i think helmet would be best.
anim8or_7, eh, i kinda only read your idea about the hair now, and i already started on the helmet.:shrug: hmm, yeah, but a primitive helmet could also do the job. also, any warrior in normal state would probably want a helmet for protection. he only goes berserk after he already put on his armour (somewhere in battle), and i dotn think a berserker will necessarily take off his helmet when in rage, since he wouldnt even think of that.
so, what im saying is that his helmer will be on long before he goes into berserk state.

the helmet is far from finished. definitely thinkign about adding horns and skulls for that added "primitive" look that anim8or_7 suggests.

also, he will have a fur cloak on his back, and some large shoulder pads, the cloak will be attached to belt which goes all the way to his belt around waiste.
boots still needs to be finished, and also teeth. dont no why, but i always get lazy when i have to do teeth! haha.

Your model is coming out really nice, from here it seems like his arms should be a tad longer. It's just hard to tell yet because I cant see all the legs :shrug:

Nice work on the helmet, Mordalles! Much impressed with your modelling skills so far.

I know KID MESH suggested that you make the Beserker's arms a bit longer, but I think they are fine. Although, you could try it out and see what it looks like.

Nothing further to comment about. 't looks all good at this stage.

i changed the helmet. i like this one much better than the other one. im still gonna add some skulls.
i also started on the shoulder pads, but only the basic design. much more detail to be added.

yeah, i do 3d one day, then 2d the next, and so forth. haha, im actually writing a 5 hour test on saturday, and should probably study a bit more. hehe.

This looks great! I think you should keep the helmet. A berzerker is just as sophisticated as the man next to him. But its his fury during battle, that rage that he can't control that makes him forget his ability of human choice. The anger in his blood makes blind to the faces of enemy and friend, and feuled only by his own rage, this blind power, he becomes fearless and near impossible to kill.

It is exactly this that makes a berserker perfect for the master and servant challeng. He posseses almost a superhuman strength (without fear killing becomes easy), but this power has a price. So he fears himself above all. And then you ask yourself, why doesn't all berserkers seclude themselves from the rest of the world? The battle calls them, they hunger battle, they are servants of their own anger, and thus they remain helpless to their own misfortune.

Think of them as a risk ... do you risk bringing him along to fight beside you? :)

A added a lot of accessories to the berserker, including the belt accors chest, chains, boots, fur cloak on back. i still have to add a skull to the front of the helmet, and also some cool design on the belt.
and of course, i still have to model the teeth.

this is my 1st texturing milestone. i just did the eyes, and played a little with ornatrix for the fur effect on cloak. im just showing the eyes, since im gonna tyr some more with the fur. hopefully ill have a lot of textures done this weekend.

tremoside, daddy mack & AIR, thanks guys! im gonna try my best with the rest of the textures. hopefully i wont mess it up. :)

ive decided that im gonna unwrap the whole char before i go on to texturing. usually i unwrap one part, and then texture, and then go on to a new part. but i think ill just get the unwrap part done with, so that i can concentrate on textures. ive already unwrapped the helmet and armguards.

i finished the unwrapping of the character today, and just put some basic colours on. ill change a lot of the colours, like the armour is going to be omre grey and a bit darker. im gonna unwrap certain parts of the axe, then im gonna start painting some textures.

Hey, Mordalles.

I like what I see so far.

Here's a thought (You don't have to use it): I think your character will look even better if he had a little darker skin tone. A light skin tone will give him a frail look - I don' t think that is the look you are aiming for. The one you used can still work if you dirty it up a bit and add a few scars and cuts. I know this is still the rudimentary textures, but I thought I would point it out now so that you could consider using it. Just a thought.

I am curious, what shader did you use for the cloth? Oranayer-Blinn perhaps?

Anyways, good work as always. Keep it up.

i just redid part of the concept sketch, since the one i had was about a minutes work, and i wanted someting better. it bugged me, heheh. i drew the berserker in a class today (i wasnt listening to the lecturer :)). added a snowy background with mountains. only thing missing is the berserker in a kneeling position infront.

i started some work on the belt. theres still some problems with some of the edges that ill correct, but i just wanted to update some texturing.
also have to do the metal part of the belt as well. the pic on the left shows the bump map a bit better. i tried to make it look scratchy. he\'s been in many wars.

anim8or_7, yeah, that was just a basic colour. didnt think about skintones yet. but ill definitely go with a bit darker one, if you say so! :thumbsup: yeah, im going to do 2 different body textures, one without blood ( only a few scars) and without much dirt, and then one with lots of blood and new scars and dirt. since ill have 2 berserkers, one before he goes on his rampage, and one after.

LOVE the texture on the belt, Mordalles. Good job.

As for the concept sketch - it has a nice look, but was hoping you are going to keep that really low-angled shot of the bersker, with his other half towering over him.
"Also have to do the metal part of the belt as well" - I hope you are referring to texturing the metal parts, because that would definitely bump up the quality of your character.

pshygon, thanks. yeah, its a skylight on the right. the one on the left is without any lights.
anim8or_7, dont worry, i am gonna keep the low angle shot, i just didnt know how to draw it! haha. so i drew the berserker in the poition he will stand, only the camera will be in a different spot. hehe. oh, and im planning to texture every little bit of metal personally with the mouse in photoshop.

just found out today we have a public holiday next week, plus our class will have our lectures that we were suppose to have on thursday on monday and tuesday, after our regular lectures. that means ill be able to do a lot of texturing from sunday to next sunday. cant wait. im gonna try finishing textures and background in the upcoming week! :applause:

i started on the background today. i used a diplacement map on a plane. then i painted it a bit in photoshop. im still gonna do a lot on the background. the white in the foreground is a different plane, on which the berserker will be. ill probably add a tree or something as well. just need to make a good snow texture for the ground now.

most of the armour has got textures now. bump maps and specular maps still missing. im gonna do them only after i have everything in place, if i have time. since idd rather have a complete pic without bump maps, than bump maps and a complete pic.
i will be painting the body 2morow, with scars and body paint and that kinda thing. also add fur on cloak and waiste cloth thingy.

painted the body today. also added some bump maps. now only the fur needs to be done, and the axe. next im gonna rig the cahr and get him in position, so that i can just add the final details after that.

i finished the axe's textures today. gave mor attention to the blade than the rest. the wood ill make a bit darker. its a bit bright i think.
i also rigged and skinned my char today. and got him in his 2 basic poses. the fingers still need to move. and the one where he is on his knees, his arms aint completely correct, but ill just correct that by actually moving the verteces meself. im not that good with skinning. hehe.

I have a few sugestions on the background (feel free to dump them if they go against your vision :) ).
I kind of liked your previous mountains, so:

- Move the mountain over to the right side and add other smaller (more distant) mountains for a mountain range;
- Make sure they don't look so smooth;
- Change the texture of the mountain back to stone and snow (more like the one you had before);
- Maybe increase the tiling of the snow material? I never actually saw snow, but I get the feeling (from pics and TV) that it has a much finer grain (a bit like sand).

I love the guy's pants - great texture!

Oh, cool result! He appears very interesting with textures (and that blod :) But the most I like is axe (ok, I guess it is not the hrades part of texturing process, but it just awesome). Really: orange, grey color and those spikes - notable, honestly
Well, snow still needs some work to do (especially with shading as for me) but it's a wip!
Can't wait to see berserker posed - gotta be not a friendly one, eh!

just placing the berserker into his main positions. a lot of his clothes and accessories must still be moved into place. the angle might change as well, and the rage berserker will probably be a bit bigger.

SoniaNotRed, thanks for the suggestions. ill definitely use them. i also liked the previous one more. ya, i think snow with rocks will be better than just snow.

Deryk, thanks! ill make the rage psoe a bit larger and more menacing. that means just a bit more work with the morph target.

i think both expressions needs a bit of work, but i just wanted my berserker in his position so that i can concentrate on the little stuff like cooler expression, adding blood to the bottom one, etc. i also think that the standing rage berserker ca be a bit larger. also, the angle of the camrea needs adjustment.

hhm, maybe ill make the rage filled standing berserker the main one, since i like the guys boots, and with this stance the boots arent visible?:eek:

It's coming together rather nicely, I must admit.

That cloth he is wearing will be covered in fur, right? That is the only thing still bugging me a bit. If it is not going to be covered in fur, you ought to change that material's settings, because it looks rather flat. If you are in fact going to cover it in fur, simply ignore what I have just said.

As for Arramor...cut the man some slack, please. Gert is a busy man. He critiques Mordalles 's work with the sole purpose of increasing Mordalles 's quality of work.
Who knows, in time, the person you mentioned might post some of his work.

not sure as what i should submit it, so im submitting it as post effect and compositing.
i changed the whole snow background to a bloody sky, to go with this evil deed the berserker did due to his rage.

hmm, i think the new backrgound goes much better with my pic. now i only need to tweek a few stuff on the berserker, add some fur, and do someth with the ground. maybe just a texture. not muhc time left, and im gonna need quite some time to render, since my pc isnt really that slow.

Hey Mordy, sorry for being so quiet!I am realy impressed with your skills both in 3d and 2d! Your work is awesome! I wish I had enough time to focus on my stuff, but I have been kinda bogged down. Next challenge I'll race ya, hehe!

Nice job on the background Mordalles. Although your previous background looked quite good, personally I think that this new one not only looks better, but also works better for the image and your concept.
If there is still time, try to paint those clouds the way I showed you. At the moment a little bit of the perspective gets lost, because the backround appears to be flat.
Good luck - your on the home stretch now.

anim8or_7, thx! yeah, i also think this background works better. but i think i could have spent much more time painting it. i just didnt have a lot of time this last 2 week.

hmm, im a bit worried about the quality of my image, since i have to rush everything this week, since i dont have a lot of time, due to university, and if i dont rush, im not gonna finish. so, hopefully it will look okay in the end. things like the ground and bacground im really just trying to finish. im gonna do final renders 2night, and 2morow. and then hopefully be able to upload final image before cut-off. its gonna be tight.

so i got my final image done, even though i really got rushed to the end. i feel that the background could have been so much more if i had more time. but im happy with it, and thats all that counts, hehe. i kinda like how his 2 hands came out in the front one.
