Master: Necromancer.
Servant: Summoned dead.

okay, this is my 1st try at a cg talk challenge, so im kinda figuring things out.

some more info on the necromancer in the concept sketch. in some places there will be flesh visible as these parts become undead. some of his fingers will only have bone left. the large hand on the right is a gigantic rock minion that he is summoning from the earth. it will be made out of rock.

oh yeah, i ran out of space on paper, so had to do pic over 3 a4 pages. haha. thats why its kinda got seams!

im really an amateur, and my main goal is just to be a little better than what i was at the start.

one question, only milestones have to be submitted. other pics we just post here ourselves, like when i make a small update? is that correct.

This looks really cool. Very cool idea. I like both your ideas for 3d and 2d, you are very creative. Someone should consider hiring you. :)

As for your question about milestones.. hmm.. I guess you choose which one you send. Maybe very small changes can only be posted on your thread while bigger (but not necessarily less frequent) updates and changes can be submitted.

Your chocie i believe.. But keep in mind ''better safe than sorry'' :)

did a basic lineart today. the whole image at the moment is around 6000x5000, and im posting it in 800x600, so a lot of detail is lost. haha. anyway, im not entirely sure what the necr will be wearing. but ill start with the hand 1st, and then hopefully something will come to mind. also thinking about background, and maybe i will insert ghosts or spirits flying about. who knows? no me!

ive decided to put the necro on the hand. this seems to create a more centralistic effect (if there is even such a word). now everything revolves around the necro and hand at the same time. previously it looked a bit off balace. also, the hand will be bound to his legs, and faces of previous souls who lost their life in the same way will be seen in the hand itself.

i looked for a colour for the hand, and also put in some details. there will be more places where the flesh will seen, also, im gonna make a finger or two show some bone. then thre will also be faces in the skin of the hand.

well, ive decided to do some basic colouring for the necro, for i finish the hand. helps me a bit with the overall image of what the hand should look like. i only did about the 2 legs of the necro in more detail. will still do rest. also, added some lost souls trapped in the hand, the necro's fate as well somewehre in the future. they are not blending in yet, still different layer.

Now that you've got the two parts together, it's not quite reading that the necro is standing on the flat pal of the hand. That part of the hand isn't reading as flat as it could: Perhaps some brighter light on the top of it might help? Or a different angle on the fingers? (When I look at my hans like that so that the palm is face-up flat, I see less of the first knuckle-section of the fingers, and they're curved more.) And shadows from the necro, which I know you just haven't got to yet, will also help. Good luck with it!

hmm, ill have to look into this! thanks for the advice. ill see what i can do. yeah, ill try fixing it with lights. the shadow of the necro will ce coming in last.
im not sure about the knuckle part, i kinda just took my hand in drew it. im left, so that made it easier to hold my right hand there, still, while i draw it. wait, i think i see what you mean. yeah, the fingers should change a bit, it seems. thanks again.
i think i can move the necro a tad up as well. since his left foot is crossing the base of the thumb area. that makes the angle of the hand just look completely wrong. thanks for bringing my attention to this Mike!!

i started with the body of the necromancer. the face and neck is far from finished. also, still waiting for my desicion on lights, which will have an effect on the body. the leg can also seen a bit clearer now. the leg is only flesh, as the dead takes over his body.

Hey, Mordalles! Really good work so far. Working hard in both disciplines I see :buttrock:.

So far, I think the colours you have used, work really well. I don't know what you have planned for the background though, but I would suggest keeping it darker than the areas that you already have. This way, one' s attention will be drawn more to the charcter and the Rock Demon's hand (Where you want it, right).

At this stage, the necromancer and the hand doesn't seem to be in the same scene. It looks like cut-outs. What you could do to correct this, is to create a shadow for your necromancer on the Rock Demon's hand. I don' t know what your lighting setup is like, but i really think you should add the shadow in somewhere.

I think your Necromancer's hands (Palm area) seem a tad bit too small. No need to go back and change it though, it will be far too much work.

Other than that, I think you have a stunning piece so far - although, I really liked you initial idea, even though it was quite similar to Golum's situation. I'm simply amazed at how much you have improved in both 2D and 3D. Good Job!:buttrock:

hello, a. great to see you around these parts. pity youre not entering. real pity. yeah, im actually gonna do the shadow last, when everythings in. also, i think a lot of the lineart is still showing through, which might give this feeling. but thatll change once i get to those areas.

i did a bit more of the necro, but he is still far from finished. i finished his hair, and also skin parts.

i also just did some basic colours for the background, just to get a feel, or mood. hehe. im gonna make the ground rocky, and the sky is gonna be clouds, dark clouds, since i want to add lightning and rain. the hole where the hand comes out of wil be a bit bigger than the line art, and im thinking of putting a yellow orange glow comgin out of it.

yeh i feel u,thats why i submit my images smaller in size*the actual pic size* instead of decreasing the image quality.

its really annoying.

but still keep it up,not as good as mine?? ..heh...right now i'm kinda dissapointed with mine,but glad ur likin.

Could you try making the ground somewhat darker? This could really help you when you add the lighting that originates from the hole in the ground. It will create a nice contrast.

i decided that i wanna start on the background. so i did the lcouds today. this is the 1st time EVER that i try doing clouds in any format of art. i looked at a few tuts, but they didnt show what i wanted, so i just started on my own, and looked at what i could come up with. probably many mistakes with it, but i kinda like the look of it. i started on the mountains, with some clouds covering it. i still need to do the rest of the ground. i might add lightning somewhere along the line. i laready have rain added, but it is hidden for now.

the necro and hand are still far from finished, i just wanted a change of scenary. :)

one thing, i like doing my backgrounds in a more blurry effect, so that more emphasize is placed on my characters. thats just my style.

Heh heh! This is cool! Hows a bout turning down the saturation on the big hand a little, and turning it up on the cuts in the flesh, so the muscle appears more vivid and fleshy?! :)

test stopped me from progressing much further. that and the fact that i started another pic! haha. here is a link to it. as you can see, its pretty much also master and servant. still in development stages. i think i need to get back to my cgentry. :wise: its kinda half anime, since the girl likes anime and tigers. her left arm needs work. im tryign to get that painted look that people on these forums get! haha. im used to making it look more digital. cant believe i havent been kicked out of this challenge yet, since there are so many good artist here, that i just drop the level! :sad: hehe.

This new project looks promising!
Just a suggestion, put a thought on where your light comes from. Even if you don't try to tend to a realistic picture, it might placing rim light, shadows and all that sort of things:)

Since you are working with 3D, it sometimes help doing a quick modeling and rendering scene.

spacesnail, thx for the suggestion. one of my brilliant artist friends also told me to decide on a light source 1st. i must just remember to do it! however, i kinda like putting in exrta lights after the pic has been fin.

yeha, im sticking with my original pic. the other one im just doing for someone at varsity, just to learn this whole painting thing. hehe.

hmm, i like where this pic is going, so maybe ill make this my entry? i have lineart and concept sketch for it, which ill post if ive decided to go through with it. just wanna know what you guys think?

i was thinking nice jungle in background. the fur on the back of the tiger is a bit scattered, and ill change that.

so, ill finish this anyway, but ill decide later on which pic will be my final entry. at the moment the necromancer is my main choice. this is just in case.

finished some of the necromancer details some clothes and armour. also change the saturation of the hand and its flesh, like i was advised. less and less lineart is onw visible, which makes it look a little bit better, i think.

well, i finished my tiger and girl, but decided that i wont be using that for my cgtalk challenge. im keeping to the necro image. i like the concept more. im gonna try a background later, after the cgtalk challenge. im now only gonna focus on my cgtalk entry. thats if another girl at varsity dont ask me to draw her again. :D

hi there,

there is some really cool ideas here, however i would seriously suggest you start looking at some reference images to help you with the general form of the objects you are trying to render. there seems to be great confusion with the hand in that particular angel and pose... also take into account the lighting. and shadow ... which both add to the mood of the image. keep up the great work and thanks alot for dropping by my thread. :thumbsup:

Slay, thx for dropping by. yeah, thanks for the advice. i tend to just rush things, without really looking at good reference. ill definitely change that in the future. only being really doing art for about 6 months now.
abotu the shadows, ill will be adding them in once im sure where the lights are. haha. and the lights, well, er, i have atleast 2 light sources im sure of, which im gonna try adding in afterwards. haha. i know, its the wrong way around. and , yeah, i had some problems with the hand in the pose of the girl. but im pretty sure the tiger is accurate.

Wow! ...Wow! I can't over how cool that fur on the tiger looks. Brilliant stuff!

There is just one thing bothering me a bit though. The tiger's eyes seem to stand out quite a bit. You can solve this by adding in fur from the eyebrows and the areas around the eyes that obscure the eyes slightly. You could also add a light shadow at the top of the eyes. This wil soften that area nicely. Just my personal opinion.

As for the Necromancer...still awaiting updates. I know your busy at University...so,best of luck Mordalles.

Great idea Mordalles and I like how you done it so far :)

I'd suggest, however, to define partially more sharper edges in the clouds to make them a bit more "distinctive" - (right now they appear more like mashed potatoes, sorry if that sounds too harsh ^^' )
Make different shape and sizes of clouds, this will make them appear more realistic ^_^

On the hand's index finger I didn't know what sort of thing the white was at first, then I saw it was the bone. To emphasize the effect of the ripped open skin, I would make the finger completely a bone finger first, then wrap the single skin shreds around it, as if they were a rag. Or you could make it look like a scratch in the skin, with shredded edges; in every case I would make it look more gore-ish so that everyone can 100% see this is an "open" finger ^^

Where is your light source? According to the highlights on the guy's armour and the shading on the hand, your light is coming from the front. Don't forget to make a shadow behind the guy on the hand, otherwise he'll look pasted on.

maidith, thx for dropping in! and thanks for the really great comments! yeah, i was thinking about making the clouds a bit more sharper and distinctive, but i 1st had to get some better reference than my imagination. hehe. ive been looking at clouds the previous 2 weeks, and lucklily it rained a lot. so now i have a bit better idea what to do.
about the bone finger. yeah, i just havent got round to deleteing the flesh behind it. i was planning on making the bone come out of the flesh. just like you said! but im still building confidence for it, since im scared of messing it up. hehe. ill also add some more cuts to the hand itself.
one lightsource will be coming out of the hole in the ground, and the other one will be lightning in the sky. where the lightning is, im still not sure. i want the 2 light source to be oposite sides of the necro, to have 2 shadows, one going each way, but the one a bit lighter than the other one. and the necro will be having some spell lights as he summons the undead.

as you can see, still lots to do! thanks for the great advice guys! im gonna try my best.

I've just been to your 3d thread - you're really going for deep concepts! Cool!
And it doesn't look at all like you started art 6 months ago! In fact, I going to ask you if you do comics because of the way you draw.

I really dig the way you painted his clothes, they look so smooth.
I've only one suggestion right now - light the spirits faces a little more, so they look more ghostly.

And cool fur on the tiger! :thumbsup:

i finally finished the necromancer. i added some fur, skulls, mouth (with tongue), teeth and eyes, and nails. im kinda happy with how it turned out. he is currently summoning the undead, and is therefore reciting words of a spell, thats why his tongue is in that position.

Here is a list of what i must still do:
1. Shadow of Necromancer
2. Glowing Light out of hole in ground
3. Lips of Necromancer
4. More Cuts in Undead Hand
5. Define Clouds More, make larger
6. Paint ground behind and underneath hand.
7. Paint hole in ground.
8. Make souls merge with hand, and make them glow.
9. Ligths on hand and necromancer.
10. Glowing light that binds necro to hand.
11. Add ruble as hand moves out of earth.
12. Unhide Rain.
13. If time, add lightning in background.

i added more cuts and flesh to the hand, and i also finished the bone of the finger without flesh. also did some minor adjustments on the souls.

List OF TO DO:

ill be doing the rocky background now, after i get off the net. then the next 3 days ill be concentrating on 3d. since im lagging a bit behind there.

i made the basic guidelines of the rocky texture underneath hand, and i put some detail into the hole where the hand is coming out of. 1st time doing rocks.


1. Shadow of Necromancer
2. Glowing Light out of hole in ground
3. Lips of Necromancer
4. Define Clouds More, make larger
5. Paint ground behind and underneath hand.
6. Ligths on hand and necromancer.
7. Glowing light that binds necro to hand.
8. Add ruble as hand moves out of earth.
9. Unhide Rain.
10. Add lightning in background.

I really like the hole. The rocks look great. And nice touch on the cracks on the edge.

Good idea, chipping the bone like that. I was thinking that maybe you could make it paler, though. I don't know if its the color but it still reminds me of a full finger, somehow...

Yeah, necromancers are one of my favourite types of characters as well. well, thats kinda obvious, since im doing one for the contest :). hmm, yeah, im kinda getting a bit worried about finishing, especially since i think of new stuff to bring in my pic everyday, like a spooky tree in the background. :scream:

i completely redid the clouds. their much darker now. i realised that stormy clouds are continous, and theres only darker or lighter clouds infront of each other. i like these clouds much more. the lightning still need a glow, and little effect on the clouds. i also added a tree.
im gonna put in an owl somewhere (probably on the tree) as a sign of death.

Thanks for dropping by dude. You got a nice thread going on here. I dig your piece. I'm a big fan of dark, creepy, and gorey stuff, hehehe. The style you have is also cool and different.

Critz, if it's raining, i'd expect some puddles and wet areas and dripping water in some of the areas in the hand. I would definately increase the glow of the hole in the ground and bounce of the warm colour lighting on your master. You can also use the lighting to create shadows on certian areas. Everything else is looking good dude. Keep it coming. will check back again.

youre painting is coming along.

tip: you can use color dodge mode when painting with a brush OR create a separate layer set to color dodge to create more convincing glows. id also put the glows on a different layer.

color wise, since its night time most of the elements should have a bluish cast on all of them, which can be achieved by just adding an adjustment layer (then put the lighting effects like glows, rain and lightning over.

my two cents worth - fingers bend into 3 segments (generally) with the knuckles much angular. for me the pinky and the ring finger(?) is a bit off.

Looking good, Mordalles!

No critique at this stage, since everyone else have already said what has been on my mind.

The rain, bouncing off of the Necromancer's head, simply looks awesome. It also creates a nice bit of rim-lighting as well.

Really good job so far. Keep it up - only two more weeks to go!

jugeras, always nice to see such a good artist lurking around mortals' threads like mine. hehe. thanks! thanks for the color dodge tip. im gonna try it when i get off the net. yeah, i also have problems with the fingers, and i was planning on fixing that, if you check out my to do list a few posts up. hehe. i dont know about the blueish glow, since i dont think it is night. it is just very dark due to the weather conditions. but actually daytime. :D thanks for the advice!

well, my final colouring is done. there is some room for more improvements, so ill just wait before i submit the final image. i have to get to the 3d now, since there is still too much to do there. so, thats why i wont have any more time to spend on the 2d.

i really like the way it came out. thanks to everyone who gave such wonderful advice. it helped my so much!
now i cant wait for the next challenge, to try new things. ive learned so much in the past 6 months.

so, this was my 1st challenge, and it was loads of fun. thanks for all the great advice! this background was the second background i ever painted. the 1st was like a week before the challenge, just to practise. haha. i really learned a lot. and im just glad they havent kicked me off yet, due to the quality of my work. hehe.. the organizers must have missed my pic. luckily theres so many good artists here who drew all the attention of mine. muhahaha.

Your work is very good, actually if, as you say, its one of your first pieces then its flaming brilliant mate. Dont be so hard on yourself, from looking at your thread its obvious that you have learned lots, but most importantly you've really enjoyed yourself!!

That is looking a lot better dude. Maybe just add a couple of those stones in the foreground to strenghten the coming out of that hand on the ground. Keep on painting dude and goodluck on your 3D entry too.

Nice pic man! I suggest u, for the last thing u do, equalize the colors a bit. I mean with that, that u flatten an image and play a bit with colors over all image, so the ambient light become one. Right now it seems that u have some white light, some yellow one, a red and blue.. elements on the pic r because of that splited. I hope I was clear about my thoughts :) somethimes i found it difficuld to express.. hehe.

so, i took the advice, and tried equalizing, and the image looks much more vivid to me. i like it much more now. the colours dont seem so boring anymore!

Congratulations, Mordalles! Your first challenge is complete and what a brilliant entry it is! When one looks back on what you started out with, it becomes pretty apparent just how much you have learned while taking part in this challenge. By no means am I implying that your work was bad to start off with - it was already quite good.

Hey man, nice work on your entry! Good luck to you!

I thought I'd try to help you on submitting your work. In the "upload final image" page, you need to copy the text "challenge.cgnetworks.com" and put it in your address bar. But before you go there you need to put "ftp://" in font of it so it reads...ftp://challenge.cgnetworks.com. This will take you to the ftp page. Then you will have to click on the link for the "beginners to ftp" page. When there you need to scroll to the bottom and download a version of the ftp. You'll want to read the page to understand why you are doing this. After you get the ftp installed a message box appears where you'll have to enter your user name and password.

You'll be taken to window where you can browse to your file and add it to the window on the right. In that window on the right, it won't show you a folder, you'll have to look at the info at the bottom of that window which will tell if it transfered or not.

Make sure you zip file is the exact same name as the one they gave you and also make sure that in your image there are no extra alpha channels or paths other than rgb. You then need to refresh your "upload final image" page to see if a thumbnail appears with your correct image. If a cropped desaturated version shows up then you probably still have a channel in your image you need to get rid of.

I hope this helps, it took me a few times to figure this out because the instructions are not very specific.
