View Full Version : Master and Servant 3D Entry: James Kaufeldt

03-22-2005, 07:59 PM
James Kaufeldt has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=6028)

Latest Update: Modeling: Finally rigged
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1113692225_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1113692225_large.jpg)

Somewhat decently rigged - the weighting sucks, but it will be OK-ish for posing purposes.

03-22-2005, 08:01 PM
Hahahahahhahahahaha...BOO!....hahahahahahahaha :scream: waaaaaaahahahhaaaa

03-22-2005, 08:05 PM

I thought you were going to skip on on this one, good thing you didn't. Good luck.

03-22-2005, 08:25 PM
Dimitris - Yeah, it's all SICK, I'm telling you... SICK...

m@ - Thank you, I'll see what I can do this time around.

ace4016 - I figured I should be able to handle two projects simultaneously... if not, it's something I need to practice. And I hope you'll enjoy your first challenge... there's nothing like the first time you know :D

EDIT: I should perhaps say something else too... erm... playing around with some concepts in my head for the moment. Got two very different ideas at the moment, but none of them really kick yet... more thinking required here.

03-22-2005, 08:35 PM

Welcome in wabbit, nice to see u back! No dirty tricks this time uh? :D have fun pal!

03-23-2005, 07:38 AM
Thanks for stopping by, dudes and dudettes...

I had quite a bunch of different ideas once I started thinking about this... managed to eliminate most of them based either on the fact that they were not that cool, or because they would be too difficult to visualise in a still... and eventually I came up with a single concept that I'll start doodling around with any day now:

This concept is a combination of a couple of ideas I've have used in my perpetually unfinished novel called "Nothing" and a short story called "The blood donor"... I used to write a lot before I got into CG, so there's a lot of stuff to use from that period of my time...

Anyways, The blood donor panopticon features one Master, the inspector, and quite a lot of servants, the prisoners/blood donors. The scene will feature the inside of a cylindrical prison tower (google 'panopticon' for more information), a very fat inspector in some sort of suit, holding a whip or something while sitting in a strange chair in the center of the floor. Around him are several levels of cells, with prisoners' cuffed arms sticking out; rubber tubes attached with needles in their arteries. All the tubes converge in a pump on the floor, in turn hooked up to the inspector himself. So, he is literally sucking blood from them. Not very subtle, but I hope it could result in an interesting image.

In terms of style I will probably go for something retro-futuristic, unspecified turn-of-the-century, Rembrandtian dark backdrop...

03-23-2005, 07:48 AM
haha... my fav fluffian is back ! :D good luck james !!!

03-23-2005, 08:01 AM
hmmmm very "dark" this time wabbit

03-23-2005, 08:04 AM
Hahahahahaha ! Welcome to the Mental Institution my friend !

Hello Piggy ! are you playing too ?

03-23-2005, 08:11 AM
I have dropped a D but I am there :)

03-23-2005, 08:13 AM
Welcome to the challenge. And good luck!

03-23-2005, 08:15 AM
M'yeah, bit on the dark side... guess all this mental institution talk got me in the mood... but then again, the dark twist is really my default state, so it should not be a surprise

03-23-2005, 08:17 AM
Nice concept, but ugh, needles, i hate needles. Not saying I hate your concept, just saying when I see it, I will like it but get numbed out at the same time. Vivid image. It can, for sure, stick in someone shead for a long time at justa single glance. Didn't know wabbits can be so evil, eek!

03-23-2005, 08:36 AM
I love your idea James... a concept really for you... like you... bloody and disturbing... out of the time... well done mate... I'm sure you can do something very strong... let's go Wabbit

03-23-2005, 09:02 AM
guess all this mental institution talk got me in the mood...

but the idea got a strong emotive feeling... I thing this is a hardcore beginn !

03-23-2005, 09:14 AM

Just a quickie to establish what I mean... further sketching will be done by blocking the scene in lowpoly 3D, so this horrid thing doesn't mean much (as per usual when it comes to my sketching)

03-23-2005, 09:32 AM
interesting idea .. something out of a horror story, very dark .. I imagine the colours very cold.

03-23-2005, 09:32 AM
hmmmmmmmmm miam miam... :) slurp :D

03-23-2005, 09:35 AM
Hi! i'm glad that you are in! give us more update!! good luck!

haha a punished fluffinas ?

03-23-2005, 10:00 AM
Hi James i just want to wish you good luck in this challange and looking forward to se your wip!

03-23-2005, 01:00 PM
Thanks all, good to see you seem to figure out the idea here (you're all alone there... :D )

And nope, no punished fluffians... the servants in this case will be very skinny, and without raincoats.. hmm..

Starting to model the Chief Inspector soon (that would be our Master here) and I've described him as "an omnipotent mental dwarf, a twisted overweight moron with the wits of a slow six year old child, an adult cherub on acid blessed with the power to subdue his defenseless prisoners."

03-23-2005, 01:06 PM
Starting to model the Chief Inspector soon (that would be our Master here) and I've described him as "an omnipotent mental dwarf, a twisted overweight moron with the wits of a slow six year old child, an adult cherub on acid blessed with the power to subdue his defenseless prisoners."you were not yet to see the doctor for your brain ? then, we are very lucky... It's that we like with you mate

03-23-2005, 01:14 PM
you were not yet to see the doctor for your brain ?
I did that a couple of months ago, but I never heard from him again....

03-23-2005, 01:19 PM
..wahhaaaaaaaaaa...U haven't heard of 'cauze he is a Zerman and when he saw your worm brain ...turned into to a running Zquirrel....zazazazazazazaazaza:scream:

03-23-2005, 01:26 PM

03-23-2005, 02:07 PM
look who's talking about kinky details :D
...sorry OT james... flying did you will be with us in this contest ?

I did that a couple of months ago, but I never heard from him again....
uh... he was affraid about rabbits ? :D

03-23-2005, 02:11 PM
Welcome, James, or should I say 'Wabbit'?
Best of luck with this one....does this mean the 'short's' on hold for a mo?

03-23-2005, 02:25 PM
Good, somene called the wabbit. How shall i say, it's nothing without the Wabbit, so welcome on board!
lol, happy rumbling James, let it rock!

03-23-2005, 03:53 PM
"an omnipotent mental dwarf, a twisted overweight moron with the wits of a slow six year old child, an adult cherub on acid blessed with the power to subdue his defenseless prisoners."

Dude James! You're sick! And I love it! :bounce:

I'm also parking myself here to see how it turns out.

Best of luck!

PS- Just FYI... and the word of the day. cherubs and seraphs by word definition are really supposed to be tall angels made of fire. Not little cute cupid-like chubby babies with wings.... On that note... I can't wait to see your fiery litte cute cupid-winged twisted overweight moronic angel on acid! (have fun modeling that! )

03-23-2005, 05:38 PM
"an omnipotent mental dwarf, a twisted overweight moron with the wits of a slow six year old child, an adult cherub on acid blessed with the power to subdue his defenseless prisoners."

Lovely concept - I'm sure it will turn into something real sweet :)

Seriously, I'm picturing something both humoristic and grotesque here - looking forward to see where you take it.

03-23-2005, 05:45 PM
Hey, cool, James is here to :)
Nice concept, a bit dramatic and dark, but good.

03-23-2005, 05:50 PM
I can't understand how your brain is working... Probably you have a stroboscope in your head and when it is flashing your brain starts to generate random images...as i see..am sure, that's the reason :-)
BTW: A wish good luck and lotsa fun again....

Beers're in the fridge!!

03-23-2005, 06:05 PM
wa? wat happend?... does this challange's theam changed to 'Master and Servent' to 'corps and self slattering' haha, if id did it sure wud be gr8.... anyways feep on those fluids flowing dude!!... good to c u again

03-23-2005, 06:27 PM
Thanks for the cheering and so forth guys :D

Dimitris - Well, doctors aren't really as cool as they can be unless they are in fact german... with short grey hair and small round glasses...

Atwooki - The short isn't exactly on hold... maybe only slowing down a bit - fact is that I'll make sure to build some things for the challenge entry that will be needed in the short as well (we're still mostly in the asset production phase anyway) .. so, no work is ever really lost

the Rev. - I had a sinking feeling that I had, at some point, been horribly mislead about the cherub thing... my reference was of course the wrong one; chubby things with wings. Though, when he's done, he'll look hideous enough to wish he was in flames, if that counts :D

And on a general note about brain functionality in the concept phase, I've always considered this type of thinking as being... well... a malfunction really.

Currently working on the head of the Master/Chief Inspector... soon decent enough to post a first WIP, though currently he looks rather silly. His name will be John Microwitz.

Just a little kick-off here. Arrived sort of at the look I want for him. Some tweaking remains of course, then I'll move on to the body.

03-23-2005, 08:58 PM
Your idea is dark yes but as i saw your last challenge works, i'm really interested to see your approach now :)

Nice modeling so far, it's really clean and expressiv, keep it up and good luck

03-23-2005, 11:51 PM

awesome idea James!

03-25-2005, 10:58 AM
Thanks for stopping by guyzzz. That's a neat bunny clip btw; aside from the gawdawful animation, a well chosen soundtrack - some of those ancient grooves never get old.

Mainly popping in to say that there's been a slight delay here (better now than later I guess) - mostly associated with a) a previous project [a whippet with human feet o_O] that I really want to finish before moving on with this, and b) the blasted easter holiday with heaps of relatives showing up and expecting me to be all jolly and social and yada yada yada... I'll just fake it as usual I guess. So, what I'm saying is that my next update is probably not going to appear until about a week from now, but hey, there's plenty of time.

03-25-2005, 11:29 AM
We wait man, one week... no prob (a bit sad anyway)... do you can finish my work too ? :bounce:

03-25-2005, 12:51 PM
but hey, there's plenty of time.

 ...

03-25-2005, 01:22 PM

03-25-2005, 02:05 PM
VERRRY nice modeling start!Hmm...
So...you model it with no neutral expression?interesting....this makes you save modeling time?

03-25-2005, 07:10 PM

well he is certainly not Swedish :D

03-25-2005, 07:44 PM
It's bloody typical, isn't it... Leave the thread unattended for a day and next thing you know it's like an outbreak of Ebola :D

Interesting though, that Zulu outfit looks almost exactly like what I'm wearing now - swedish easter suit... a proud tradition for centuries.

So, lemme just say 'Happy Easter' (not sure why though, but I seem to remember it had something to do with the first time an arameic carpenter lay eggs or something, couple of millenia ago... )

OZ - Well, that is almost his neutral pose :D I've got other plans for the mouth, but I'll save that for morphs, and I need to make his teeth first... it will not be pretty.

Oh, and I'm glad to see a french night girl here too *waves eyebrows*

--- back to my social duties ----

03-25-2005, 07:47 PM

03-30-2005, 06:10 AM
This guy got some expression all right ! looking god with the ears and the folds :scream:
continue ! continue !

03-30-2005, 06:36 AM
cool looking gread ;p

I feel he's upper eyelids need a bit of adjustment, his eyes look a bit hollow. I think soften the nose a bit and make it a bit more round.

keep it up dude, expecting great works from u ;p

03-30-2005, 06:57 AM
:applause: wonderful expression !

03-30-2005, 07:01 AM

c ya !

03-30-2005, 07:40 PM
Ah, yeah, thanks guys for pointing out the eyelid problem (though I was slightly aware of it, but still....) and the rounding of the nose as suggested by Versiden, good call, it has been taken care of

@ Gunilla - it's a VERY local custom, in fact nobody outside my apartment have ever heard of it before... doesn't get more local than that I guess.

Thanks to all ye others for stopping by... I find myself seriously lacking time to browse around or to do much modeling, but I've made some further refinements on the head... update following below:

03-30-2005, 07:40 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1112211658_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1112211658_large.jpg)

Cut some more creases, rounded the nose a bit, played around with the shaders... stuff like that.

03-30-2005, 07:45 PM
Nice start James, i like this guy!!
I'm waiting to see update! :bounce:

03-30-2005, 08:02 PM

03-30-2005, 10:35 PM
I like it, James
Got loads of character, and plenty of 'weight' in his head from the shader, which being a biggish bloke he might well need :D
Nice update :)

Chris (the bastard j/k)

03-31-2005, 06:44 AM
Holy crepes! Have you been smoking crack again or something?

 sorry

really I meant to say it was a totally pathetic attempt at modelling :D

Very good expressions... my prefered is the second... too funny...

04-01-2005, 02:30 PM
Cooler than cool. Really. I don't know - but he somewhat reminds me of "Face Off" - as if his whole head had been scalped and placed on someone else. Could be the reason he looks so surprised.
I'm really looking forward to his body

04-02-2005, 11:20 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1112484026_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1112484026_large.jpg)

Want to try out some rough layouts before moving on here... and I'm starting off with these four. The plan is to have the Master in his chair on a platform in the center of the panopticon, with several floors of cells surrounding him. I have to focus on something, and since the Master perceives his servants as faceless things, only their arms will be visible, sort of sticking out through special doors, cuffed to pipes outside - hence the Master will be the main focal point.

Obviously the layouts have a minimum of detail, and in addition to being composition tests they also represent a first draft of the lighting and colour temperatures.

Thanks for stopping by btw guys and gals... I'm kinda tired, so I'll be brief: Cya around :D

04-03-2005, 12:33 AM
It's going to be a tricky composition - to get close enough to the main character to see his expression while at the same time maintaining the sense of scale and showing the circular prison cells in a dramatic way.

One thing I don't really like in the layouts is the gangway. Perhaps you could experiment with other ways of getting the chair to the height you need - something like on a large telescoping pole or suspended from the ceiling or steps in the same 'Y' pattern as the gangway but ascend or descend may help to accentuate the perspective and sense of depth.

Tricky indeed... A telescope pole was my initial plan in the first concept sketch, so maybe I should revert to that... suspension is an interesting way to go as well, perhaps camera looking up at the master hanging belly-down a la Mission: Impossible... Lots of options at any rate - thanks for your thoughts, Audible Plop :D

04-03-2005, 09:36 AM
could work actually Wabbit

OT: really have to laugh every time I read your user name Ordibble Plop :D :D

Ok ...i am out of the hangover...:scream:...if u get the third expression clearly in final ...go with any layout u like :bounce:

M'kay... four more here for consideration. Tried one landscape oriented, but I'm pretty sure I'll have to go portrait on this given the tall nature of the panopticon structure.

N.B. #5 here would imply the Master being suspended in wires of some sort. I'm not sure about that one though, since it would perhaps make him appear powerless somehow.

Pig, yeah, it's quite ploppy

Vampeta, neato, and good luck (this time too)

Dimitris, I'm shocked to see that you are still alive.

04-04-2005, 07:07 AM
I prefer the #5... but not totally... I think the body is a little bit more low, and with a similar orientation than the over pictures... your project is really enthralling for me... good continuation

04-04-2005, 07:38 AM
I think 5 looks pretty good, and interesting, but I think number 8 is a bit better for readability and would probably show the blood transfusion machine better. Number 8 also looks like it can fit more prisoners in the scene and shows the hieght better to give more of an effect of the mass numbers of prisoners

04-04-2005, 07:51 AM
I'm actually leaning towards #8 myself at the moment (sorry Laurent! :D ) ... I'm going to model a bit more now before doing further layouts.

I've just decided to be even more cruel to the servants than I originally planned. A few years ago when traveling the countryside, I accidently happened to check in at a bed & breakfast kind of place that happened to be pretty close to a mink farm. And I realized then that there are very few things as evil and disrespectful as mink cages. So, the servants will be crammed into very small individual cages, in sort of a kneeling/bowdown/squashed position, arms sticking out through the front. Then I'll simply stack such cages on top of each other. The fat master will be in his chair, probably wearing a white shirt and suit. It's hard to get more Master & Servantish than that :)

04-04-2005, 08:13 AM
6 and 8 looks interesting...

04-04-2005, 08:49 AM
Looking Good James, It promise to be another one from you, keep posting!

04-04-2005, 05:39 PM
And yet again: evidence that choice of composition is related to genes.

#8 ger.

(Reminds me of a frame from a storyboard I'm currently considering maybe perhaps to continue considering working on sometime this century).

#4 is pretty good too.

well at least the update is reasonable :argh: :D

Put a few of the cages in place to see what gives... aaaaaaand I can see I'll have to work a bit more on the framing. It will end up a bit too crowded and random looking otherwise.

On the other hand, it looks like I'll get the desired foreground/background separation... and I'll get not only the Master up close, but also a couple of the servants. It's a good thing.

04-04-2005, 07:38 PM
This update is really cool, good idea about putting some cages in the camera angle...more depth to the scene

This entry is really strange but i like your approach to the subject......this will be very nice at the final ! Keep coming man :arteest:

04-04-2005, 08:35 PM
Finally got a chance to check out your thread, James--the usual mayhem, I see. I love your master character--just the right combination of stupid and evil. How are you doing the facial expressions? Did you rig the face?

04-04-2005, 08:42 PM
Cipher - Hah, I like "strange", it's what I tend to aspire to :D

Janet - Posemixer. And then just maul a few copies with the magnet tool (checking 'surface' is good when fiddling with upper and lower lips separately)

04-05-2005, 11:28 AM
cool. thanks, james. facial expressions are totally new ground for me...

04-05-2005, 12:11 PM
Great pov ! yess, your work will rock again james ! :applause:

04-05-2005, 04:57 PM
By the way, bro: You should analyse the video for Skinny Puppy's Testure again, if you need inspiration for the caged servants!

04-05-2005, 05:10 PM
Great camera posistioning mate... very dramatic

04-05-2005, 11:32 PM
Janet - I think that facial expressions is the most fun part of all this 3D stuff (that, and the full body posing as well) :bounce:

jddog - Thanks, I hope so too

DenialK - Found it. Good cage things going on in that one.

eddieellis - Glad you like it in spite of the sketchy state of everything

Erm... minor update coming below. Those who watched my Grand Space Opera WIP will know that this composition stuff can go on for ever and ever and ever....

04-05-2005, 11:33 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1112743981_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1112743981_large.jpg)

Rearranged things a little... made space for the actual blood pump unit (will be in the lower right corner)... reposing my dummy to fill up his corner better... rotated the foreground cages a bit to allow for a better view of the poor bastards supposed to be in them... cropped the whole thing to make it more narrow too, but I'm not sure about that yet.

Getting closer. Oh, and I desaturated all the lights here, so disregard colouring entirely. This was just to see the spatial arrangement of objects a bit clearer.

04-06-2005, 01:01 AM
Nice lighting on the character...imma rookie so no crits here !!!

04-06-2005, 01:45 AM
hay wabbit .. this is cool ... nice angle ... i was wondering how you were gonna put all the story elements into it ... and ya got the central character front and center

diggin it and will dig it more when some blood starts spurtin :D

04-06-2005, 05:59 AM
Oh yeah... it's really better... good mood James

04-06-2005, 06:26 AM
Hey...nifty guy :p ......i don't know if it's a veery good idea :lightbulb ..but u could add 2-3 light glows in those develed faces on the background wall...that will help also to to your character to stand out more....i think! (try and error TIP) :D

develed= beveled :scream:

04-06-2005, 06:33 AM
I know you are trying to get the cages big in frame to show those trapped in them, it just makes the main figure look rather cramped, maybe a row of cages behind him instead  ...he just doesn't look so much at the centre of things, but rather stuck in a corner...if all that makes any sense :argh: ........ I do like the point of view though

04-06-2005, 07:03 AM
Troof - Thanx, I think I'll go for character lighting a la Colonel Kurtz - Apocalypse Now

Drinking piglet - Well it's a puzzle, isn't it... getting closer at least

Lemog - Glad to hear that

Dimitris - Something like that... at least rather bright stuff somehow... and those things really ARE "develed", so you got it right the first time :D (in fact it's just artifacts from some overlapping proxies, and such things shall from now on be called "devels")

flyingP - Well, I get what you mean, and I had a slight feeling it was still a bit crowded. I'll fiddle around some more. Adding a few additional cages pretty close behind him will work though, so I'll probably do that but still keep the central cylindrical arrangement and at least one of the foreground piles of cages... several options and combinations left to try out.

With a few more years of practice, I think I might soon be able to nail the perfect composition without having to do all this trial and error stuff :D

04-06-2005, 07:10 AM
i'm gonna agree with FP ...yah... how about moving a row of cages half way into that light column, or another row altogeher ... or an orange juice stand ( don't they give ya orange juice after you give blood ) :buttrock:

04-06-2005, 07:17 AM
Tweak it around I will... adding some orange juice consider I shall...

04-06-2005, 07:18 AM
Tweak it around I will... adding some orange juice consider I shall...

got a touch of the Yoda this morning huh ? :D

04-06-2005, 07:20 AM
Too much midi-chlorians in my coffee :D

Damn this is stupid, I'm not even an SW fan... but Yoda is cool though, no doubt about it...

04-06-2005, 07:25 AM
kinda like this??

04-06-2005, 07:27 AM
weird....and some people just add sugar

OK, removed some foreground cages and added a stack in the near background instead... It sort of changes the balance a bit - main character seems less shoe-horned into place, but I'm not sure if I like the overall look...

04-06-2005, 02:52 PM
Hm.. There's a slight warehouse vibe to it all now. Not neccesarily a bad thing.. maybe if the cages were arranged more in line with the walls.. angle.. radial.. you know.. :D and perhaps if you just move the camera back a few meters, making the main character slightly smaller... Yeah.. And I should't have freebased Ajax yesterday, my vocabulary and ability to explain things disappeared completely. But I smell great!

04-06-2005, 03:25 PM
very nice.. I think removing the cages was a good call..

04-06-2005, 04:40 PM
Nice entry! :D

I like it, good luck!

While further pondering upon the intricacies of the composition (thanks a lot for the feedback!) I've started on the body of John Microwitz.

Since he'll be wearing a shirt and suit, there's no need to get into the actual body, but I prefer to hit the outmost layer of clothes straight away instead.

This is about as much as we'll see of the shirt. I'll add a tie and some buttons, more wrinkles perhaps, then move on to the upper part of the suit (jacket? blazer? whatchamacallit....)

04-06-2005, 10:30 PM
Nice modeling! I love the style! Keep it up! Itll be awesome!:bounce:

04-07-2005, 02:34 AM
Very nice modeling.

04-07-2005, 05:54 AM
The shirt start well mate... I'm so happy to imagine him with his clothes... :bounce: quick man... I want to see that...

04-07-2005, 06:19 AM
Hi James,

Good idea withthose clothes and nice start on them. It will work perfectly with your unique character. Ok, you have the Wabbit Mode. I almost forget it. :buttrock:

04-07-2005, 11:32 AM
mecman, arlutic - Glad you like it

Lemog - It's way better than imagining him without clothes, that's for sure :scream:

Tremoside - Hi'ya, yeah, will engage the Wabbit drive later on... too much time left still, and I'm pretty slow until the deadline is really breathing down my neck...

About the composition stuff on previous page - DenialK, yea, a slight warehouse feeling... but then I think that might be an advantage, as it makes the whole thing a little more bizarre that way... Versiden, myep, removing some of the foreground cages seems to have opened things up a bit, for the better me thinks too.

Some shirt updates coming below:

04-07-2005, 11:33 AM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1112873587_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6028/6028_1112873587_large.jpg)

Added buttons and a tie, fiddled around with subtle creases, playing around with a shirt shader (white things are incredibly tricky to render well for some reason...)

With a bit of luck I'll end up with something like John Belushi's previously unknown evil twin in Blues Brothers VI, return of the Blobby.

04-07-2005, 11:37 AM
great character! I love his face and the body looks promising

Keep it up.

04-07-2005, 11:55 AM
Hey James, you crazy rabbit, how you doing!
Great progress mate. Keep on

CU around

04-07-2005, 03:36 PM
well....he looks like he has had his coffee :D :D

04-07-2005, 04:17 PM
I like the composition arrangement from previous page, very good. Modeling is nice, too..:)
this one has potential, keep up

04-07-2005, 04:37 PM
I think the new composition with the cages in the back looks quite good. For some reason I suddenly start to wander about the shaft though ... what's the purpose for that? Whats above the cages? Could you perhaps have pipelines with blood from upper areas coming down through it? Strange, I didn't even see it earlier...just some thoughts. Go ahead. your projects coming on fine, as expected. Master is georgeous

04-07-2005, 05:34 PM
Hey great start on the shirt, this character looks very kewl... i like the anxious expression, well done

04-07-2005, 07:36 PM

04-07-2005, 07:59 PM
Hi JamesMK, great expression you've got on this character and I really like his 'neck' Great work:thumbsup:

04-07-2005, 08:35 PM
Composition looking very dynamic, James; I like it a lot :)

Nice to see our startled chappie has adopted some attire, too :D

Good stuff; growing all the time :)

04-07-2005, 10:27 PM

Absolut great progress! I like the Face a lot, remind me a bit of the doc from " Total Recall"

Keep on Modeling!

04-08-2005, 10:20 AM
Antropus, Atwooki, Vampeta - Oh, very glad you guys like it!

mikepol |3D| - Hey there, nice to see you around

flyingP - Yep, quad-strength espresso every morning :D

Mandrake - Thanks, I hope the composition will work out

Gunilla - The shaft will contain even more cages in a radial arrangement. But I'll mix some architecture into it as well, and probably try to keep it a little brighter... light smoothly rolling down... something like that

cipher, DaddyMack - Thanx0rs!

Squiiiiiiiibbbbibbiiiiiiiit - *ducks*

This is taking too long :)

04-08-2005, 10:50 AM
Har har ..*^*^$*())*$% jacket eh?....har har.....well i think it looks fine , it might need some tweaks , which i am sure u see, but i also waont u please to make at least an extra edge loop on the elbow area ...in the spot u have the pushed in polys (i don't know if i make sense in the way i am describing this)

P.S ......^&%$*^ Jacket...har .....har ...u are in deep S..T now ...hahahaha :scream: :p

04-08-2005, 12:37 PM
Good points, Dimi - I'll deal with it on the second tweaking round tonight

Lest I forget, the official story for this entry... strangely enough I haven't decided on a title for it yet, but I'm sure something will come to me before it's time to submit the final image.

Time: July 1, 2014
Location: Chopsticks Ludicrously Maximised Security Prison for the clinically insane (CLMSPci), Bayonne, New Jersey.

After several decades of less-than-perfect security in the prison industry, a group of criminologists decided to come up with a brand new solution in order to once and for all stop people from breaking out of jail. But they started with a really old idea, the panopticon, as originally visualised by Foucault almost 500 years ago, and then added some much needed twists to it.

The basic idea was to seal the facility off entirely. Up until then, there were still lots of people who were fully able to walk in and out as they pleased: the staff working at the prison. And if they could come and go as needed, the physical possibility for prisoners to do the same was obvious.

The solution was simple - just make it impossible for the staff to leave too.

The CLMSPci was the pilot project, and had been running for a few years when the unfortunate decision to employ John Microwitz was made. He was chosen to become one of the four new guards to be locked up in the panopticon for the upcoming season from september 2013 to july 2014.

The general procedure was to hire four guards for each season, cut a small hole in the outer shell of the panopticon, let the previous guards out, push the new ones in and then weld the hole shut again. Being entirely isolated from the outside world for nine months was not easy, even if they had a big fat paycheck waiting for them when they came out, so any potential guard had to pass a series of very strict psychological tests before being accepted.

Somehow they slipped up when testing Mr Microwitz. - - -

- - - The SWAT team was locked and loaded outside the panopticon, as always, when the chief inspector arrived to cut a hole in the shell and let the guards out. But when the three inch thick steel plate fell to the ground, there was nobody waiting on the inside.

Soon enough they found John Microwitz. Most of the prisoners were dead because John had reversed the IV system for nutrient distribution into a giant blood-sucking device, pumping the prisoners' fluids into John's veins. His three fellow guards were found in their beds, beaten to death with a fire-extinguisher.

John refused to say much about what had happened, other than that he had proclaimed himself to be the God of the Panopticon, the omnipotent master of the cage of cages.
And there was nobody around to stop him.

*ba-dum tish!*

04-08-2005, 12:41 PM
wahahahahaha I see you have left the balls :D

04-08-2005, 02:49 PM
I think you misspelled John Microwitz, I belive it's spelled James Kaufeldt:p . That guy is crazy. Nice story by the way. Maybe you could roll up one of the sleeves and have one of the tubes runnig into his arm vein. Kind fo hard to figure out where those needles are going to go with all that clothing covering up aerties and veins.

04-08-2005, 03:42 PM
great looking suit.

04-08-2005, 04:52 PM
Maybe you could roll up one of the sleeves and have one of the tubes runnig into his arm vein. Kind fo hard to figure out where those needles are going to go with all that clothing covering up aerties and veins.
Absolutely correct and already planned. I'm just modeling everything symmetrically now, then I'll fix such details once he's posed and ready for action. Aaaaand I'll fix the spelling mistake :D

Onwards with some trousers for this fellow. I have seen him without trousers, and I can assure you that it's a scary image that will probably stay forever burned into my retina.

04-09-2005, 02:38 AM
when did your dude get his hands the one ring  , must be a broken one like the one from my gnome... pitty, doesnt work on clothes and... eyeballs... :scream:

wabbit, hell, wow, what a bloody story! :D lol, hahahaha, way cool! keep it up mate!

Minor tweaks made on jacket and shaders - put head back on.... having very little time to work on this right now, but I'm sort of on schedule anyways...

04-09-2005, 09:28 PM
that dude is looking at me - and it's freaking me out man!!!
he has some great fashion style as well...

but why don't you make his double chin a bit more impressive - you know like hanging out over his tie and stuff!

04-10-2005, 05:03 AM
having very little time to work on this right now, but I'm sort of on schedule anyways... lol, wherever i go i see wabbitposts. they multiply like...
looks very nice, maybe the jacket looks a bit too specular, like errrr. blinnish? could be a bit more like wool or so, more broken specularity and 0 gloss. I agree with miezis on the doublecin, would be worth a try! awesome model, keep it up mate!

04-10-2005, 12:43 PM
Very impresed with your story. I don't know if you played Silent Hill (any part), but your work and design of this game are spiritual brothers. I gues your idea gives you a wide "field of operation" in matters of enviromental design. I think that the amount of emotions the mood of the scene should come from the enviroment, not from relationsheeps between characters. Probably the lightning of the scene is most important. What do you think?

Don't pay atention to the1st_angel's "blood story" and "hahaha". She is jealous, I guess.

04-10-2005, 03:02 PM
Miezis. made a great suggestion - double chin would look awesome.

reduce the spec and gloss to 0 on the jacket - otherwise.. looking great!

skin shader is looking v.good.. keep it up m8

04-10-2005, 04:13 PM
Looking great james, I hope i can get my clothes to look half as good as your when i'm done :)

04-10-2005, 04:17 PM
Really creepy story , You know!
If i'll be one of the potentional prisoners , I personally prefer to die than to go to this panopticum...

The story remind me one german movie- Das Experiment -maybe U have seen?
Scientists gathered 20 volunteers ( i am not sure about the number) - 10 of them were guards and 10 of them prisoners...Well-the guards could leave the prison after work-but still the situation started to get out of control :))

04-10-2005, 04:22 PM
hmm,Great 3dChracter Design,u have here! loved it,

Good luck mate!

04-11-2005, 07:04 PM
Shame on me not to see this post before ! :D
This will be another great stuff ! bravo James ! :applause:

04-11-2005, 07:12 PM
...Yeah...he is cool...the idea of double chin is cool too....me thinks wabbito! :bounce:

04-11-2005, 10:04 PM
Right. A couple of days ago I was "reading" a swedish popular science "magazine" and I came across this "picture" and figured I just had to show it here.. so I decided to put the "magazine" in my "scanner". Please observe the "result" of this process below.

04-11-2005, 10:18 PM
Gaaah! He's for real! :scream:

Oh, umm, bit busy with some other stuff... but I'm making some more double chins and working a bit on the trousers now... thanks for all suggestions and comments... Incidently picked up a copy of Doom3 today so... well...

04-11-2005, 11:00 PM
... Incidently picked up a copy of Doom3 today so... well...

..wahaaaaaaaaaaaaa...there goes at least 1 week o time for ya...hahahah....oh man...u will not leave the monior of you machine until u finish this one (Doom) ...hahahahahaha

Hehe, I remember I picked up HL2 before the challenge and spent that whole week beating it and playing CS:S and HL2DM. You are definaetley loosing a week of work, maybe even 1.5.

04-12-2005, 01:47 AM
Great harangued look on the guy James! The suit is looking good.

Trousers and shoes added. More double chin. Tweaked jacket shader a little.

Now I only have to make his hands, a little slab of blubbery belly to peek out through the shirt... oh and a pair of socks... Then I should be ready to move on to the servants/sorry-assed dead prisoners...

Thanks for all comments and suggestions - and yet again apologies for my ghostlike presence - and it's actually not entirely because of Doom3 :)

04-12-2005, 12:38 PM
very cool work so far lord wabbit! trousers could use a bit more folds uppon the shoes maybe, keep on rocking!

04-12-2005, 12:42 PM
looking good my friend... keep it up

04-12-2005, 01:51 PM
nicely progressing along

I would make his trousers slightly longer and give it that crease where the pants meet the shoes... right now it looks like they don't fit him

04-12-2005, 02:32 PM
Good points about the length of the trousers (folding up against the shoes and everything) - however, as he will be sitting down with both knees more or less fully bent, the pants would slide upwards a bit (y'all know what happens) and appear to short. So I'm basically saving myself the trouble to shorten them after he's been posed :D

Had he been standing up though, then yep, they would need to be longer.

heya wabbit check your mailboxezzzz :bounce:

04-13-2005, 03:37 PM
That figure is so funny! Great James style! Legs looks long to me, but the overall proportions are simply cool!!

04-13-2005, 04:04 PM
Hey, cut you that stuff with DOOM3 it's sucks. DOOM3 RESURECTION OF EVIL too. We want more updates. I'm very eager to see the final image. Especialy after I read full story (most respect, mate:applause:) .

04-13-2005, 04:23 PM
Versiden - Ah, well it was a valid point though

Squibbit - Umm... hang on.... ARRGH! "Kill da wabbit" ?!?! :D Have to listen to that when I get back... gotta run now

Tremoside - Glad you likey... legs look a little long to me too, but they do match my template... the look overrules the numbers though, so if they still look long once he's posed, I'll fix it

suk-grigorij - Ha! Well, I'm not much of a gamer, so fear not... making 3D is still more fun than playing in it.... aaaaaaand I've got an update coming below...

Update below:

An educational episode. Perfect if you want to know how to not model hands maybe.

Got all parts on him now. Moving on to unwrapping and so forth.... or modeling servants... not sure which will go first.

04-13-2005, 04:45 PM
good stuff james. i really like the double chin. i agree that his legs look a little long, but that might all be in the camera angle.

04-13-2005, 08:40 PM
oh wabbit has been busy....is actually looking very good  :D

04-13-2005, 09:46 PM
Very cool work man !! I love this suit ! The head looks really cool too ! keep it up

04-13-2005, 10:03 PM
great job dude, i wish i know how to make one

04-14-2005, 12:27 AM
Looks very nice! Anatomically correct too, in my opinion.

(Also: another humanoid today said - whilst watching the boat sequence - "var filmade ni det dr?". Lajbans).

04-14-2005, 03:55 PM
Hands!!. Yap. I guess you are totally right, comrade. Making 3d is much more interresting than playing it. Keep it Up.

04-14-2005, 09:03 PM
Janet - Yep... or the weight distribution somehow... I'll leave any tweak decisions until he's posed

flyingP -

.::STRIKE::. - Thanks!

arkinet - Hm, had a peek at your 2D entry... looks like you know how to make one

DenialK - That's really odd... those guys apparently wouldn't spot a CG shot even if it bit them in their posterior interior...

Grigorij - Indeedy

No real update today, but a slight outbreak of sillyness:

Posing before proper weighting is a lot of fun...

... not very productive, but rigging is rather dull, so I guess this is my way of making things a little more entertaining

04-14-2005, 10:48 PM
Hey James, sorry I haven't dropped by before but real life... Well, you know, it sorta gets in the way :)

Right, what have we here, then? Characters with a twist? A slight touch of mild insanity? A concept and execution that is different from the rest of the contest? Yep, it's all here so I must draw the obvious conclusion that you are on top of things! --->

Posing before proper weighting is a lot of fun...

It is, isn't it... :scream:

Cartesius - Oh, indeed... haven't had much time myself to play around with this guy either the last few days. I'm not quite on top of things, more like slightly to the left of things, but it's close enough I guess :scream:

3draven, dimitris, kanga, grigorij - :wavey:

Finally got this fella properly rigged tonight ( :scream: ) - I'm really far from feeling comfortable with rigging (or weighting to be specific: I just can't seem to stay focused on it long enough to make it good... weighting as such, although physically impossible, both sucks and blows, it's not even funny... really have to make a habit of weighting and modeling simultaneously somehow :curious: )

Anyways, small update coming in a little while, then I have to get moving on the other things (prisoners and various equipment such as a comfy chair for the master and the blood pumping devices - um... got an idea for the final tweaking of the composition as well, so unless I get sidetracked by everyday kind of things such as vacuum cleaning, I think I might be able to pull this off before the deadline)

Somewhat decently rigged - the weighting sucks, but it will be OK-ish for posing purposes.

04-16-2005, 11:20 PM
Wow James awesome work, he really seems alive very nice work of modeling, and positionning :thumbsup::thumbsup:

04-16-2005, 11:25 PM

04-17-2005, 12:06 AM
Looking good :buttrock: . I don't see myself rigging my characters to animation standards either, just posable.

04-17-2005, 12:10 AM
Great fnish on him James :buttrock:

The undone shirt looks excellent :) maybe add some stitches near its bottom (or am I just being picky)

04-17-2005, 05:51 PM
LOL. good pose test. if this was for a final image, i'd remind you to move his left hand away from his face, so the pose would read in silhouette, but he has loads of character. i know what you mean about weighting characters. talk about tedious--right up there with UV unwrapping and watching paint dry.

maybe one shirt tail should be partly tucked in.

04-18-2005, 07:36 AM
Perfect rigging for John Microwitz now... really cool man... the hidden brother of the blues brothers :scream:
Take care with the button of the bottom of the shirt, it should be on the other side in think  or on the ground...

04-18-2005, 07:43 AM
Extra wow James... your Jhon Micro-viz look really amazing...

edit: oups John... Micro-viz

Well, to those wondering, I'm experiencing a bit of a CGer's block - I suddenly arrived at a point a few weeks ago, where I realised that the level of style, originality and expression I've come to be looking for is just way beyond what my current set of skills and workflow allows - - -

- - - so what I'm doing now is to go back to the basics and try to find alternate ways to do this, in terms of workflow, methods, everything, just an overall re-evaluation of the whole shebang... fact is that the initial buzz over a new concept, and the resulting initiative to work towards the finished piece, is a sort of energy that only lasts for a few days... a week tops... after that, it goes dull and that dullness will relentlessly show its ugly face in the final image - - -

- - - hence I need to come up with ways to get results much much faster than what my current workflow can do... It's the whole chain from volume definition, detailing, mapping, weighting, rigging, texturing... need to unify it somehow and turn it into something fast enough to allow me to finish before the inspiration goes down the drain.

just wait a bit before flushing next time.......on second thoughts :argh: :scream:

04-29-2005, 04:01 PM
Really to bad, James - I was looking forward to see this finished.

It sounds like a good idea to go through your workflow to see why this happens... and if you discover how to overcome it, I'd love to know - same things happen to me all the time.

Good luck and perhaps we can see John M finished afterall!?

04-29-2005, 08:44 PM
Hahahahaha, Looks like he just had a hell of a beer night! YEAH!, well done James!

I know what you mean about this, James. When you draw a picture, you draw it and it's there--concept immediately realized. In 3D, the journey between concept and realization is soooo long. It's easy to lose that energy. Especially with the challenges, where every single thing has to be done from scratch. And especially if there are characters involved. As I noodle my way through proper loops for a male character, i keep thinking, well this is kind of dumb--i already have a prefectly good human male mesh from the last challenge that would work fine here with just a little tweaking. It seems to me that making 3D characters makes alot more sense if you're going to use them for more than a single image (eg. animation, image series, graphic novel, etc.). That being said, I always learn alot from the challenges. If you figure anything out, it would be great if you posted it--I think the production doldrums are pretty common in this field.

05-03-2005, 07:43 PM
James!!! You ain't gonna let go even one challenge!? Don't ya!? :) Keep up good work man.
I'm watching :)

05-03-2005, 10:15 PM

incredible, i never seen your post..... today is a great day for me. Good luck mate

05-10-2005, 01:13 PM
