"How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High.’ But you are brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the Pit. Those who see you will stare at you, and ponder over you: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world like a desert and overthrew its cities, who did not let his prisoners go home?’"

Isaiah 14:12

OK I'm in!! My second comp but first in 2d, looking forward to seeing all the entries progress. Good luck to all! :bounce:

03 March 2005, 06:39 PM
gud luck !

A quick sketch of what is going on in my head when I hear Master and Slave!

Ok, the master is the girl - summoning the demons from another realm to serve her. But, in summoning these demons she has pledged her soul to the devil and though she is master now - she will serve the devil for the rest of time once she has passed from this life.

03 March 2005, 12:16 AM
Good start mate, it may be a little hard to tell that she is master?

It kind of looks like she cant see them sneeking up on her from
behind... "they're behind you!!" maybe her head could be slightly
turned to one side like she knows but is still looking at he viewer
with an evil smirk.. good luck!

03 March 2005, 08:37 AM
Good to see you here Matt.

Nice idea - keep playing with the composition - try some wacky perspectives...

03 March 2005, 06:11 PM
great start ,yeh u may want to play with sum perspective,if the woman is the master u may want to make it seem she a bigger than the demons.

maybe have the demons looking up at her.

03 March 2005, 12:26 PM (

Jezzarts - "They're behind you!!" haha, ok when I take a look at it again I'm completely seeing what you mean. So this change of direction is good for me.

James - I tried some new perspectives and moved around some of the demons and eventually decided to lose the chair as it limited the poses and only have one demon so that I can spend more time developing the detail and less time working out all the compostion. It's all gone a bit more suggestive and hopefully I'll be able to keep this idea going. Any advice is always very welcome. I will need to work more on the demon, and decide how he will look etc, so any advice on that in particular would be a bonus!

NOOB! - Demons now looking up at her! Looks much more like she is in control now I think.

Thanks for the C&cs! more welcomed!!

03 March 2005, 12:29 PM
ah looks much better! but maybe have the demon not touching the breast, that cud be a risk for the judging process,i think they mentioned sumthin about not including sexual references.

i dunno maybe have his hand at her thigh or sumthin.or just about to reach the breast.

03 March 2005, 02:06 PM

Really!? Gutted. ok, hand repositioning in process! Good call, thanks :wise:

03 March 2005, 02:29 PM (

ok, just a quick reposition of the arm (for sake of the rules). Needed to hang the dress differently too so this time there is less drapery, might try to bulk up the material. The only problem with this is that the demon looks to be lifting the angel up in the air... Does this look the case to anyone else?

03 March 2005, 02:40 PM
I much prefer the post in #8; don't see why it should be against the rules. If I were doing this, I'd make the demon's face a little less human, and his expression more beseaching but at the same time more sly, so we're not sure who is really the master out of these two. I'd also go for some very dynamic lighting because although your sketch is very good with regard to form and poise, it does lack any real compositional value. Hope this helps.

03 March 2005, 03:00 PM
I much prefer the post in #8; don't see why it should be against the rules.

agree completely, the whole Master and Servant theme connotes sexual content in many ways.. But, I do understand that there may be problems with my concept, so I will move away from the blatent groping and move towards subtle suggestion. The latest positioning of the demon will be refined as I will get a decent life study of the male arm and its musculature in the new position.

As for the facial expression, this is something I really want to work with as it should be the focus for the piece. I'm toying with the angel having no pupils (rather like storm - Xmen). The demon, however will be much more deep, and have a very sly expression. "The angel is in control, but for how long", definately something to concentrate on come the later stages.

Lighting is essential, I'll be working all that out very soon I hope! thanks :buttrock:

03 March 2005, 03:04 PM
i think u went a little TOO far with the hand repositioning,i prefer the other too,all i sed was reposition it a little to make it look less

not completly change it.

03 March 2005, 03:43 PM
:D Ha, well... It doesn't take 5mins to move the arm about so let's see what happens, and I'm happy to experiment in these early stages. I have an idea on where it should go now, so hopefully I'll manage to get the perfect pose. The demon may look nothing like what he does now, I'm really trying to get the pose and composition right.

03 March 2005, 04:20 PM
first timer here....great work!...but pls reposition back the hand..the naked skin gave it a little bit of spice...good luck!

03 March 2005, 04:55 PM
Nice work so far. I have to chime in that I too preferred the earlier arm to the new one. It's not necessarily that he looks like he's holding her up as much as that, well, it's really hard to make out exactly what that hand is doing now! :-) I can see why you shifted away from the "groping," though. Here's a possible suggestion: What if the hand were up where it was in the earlier shot, only he's got the cloth in his clenched hand: It could looke like he's raising it up and covering her up, or like he were gently easing the cloth off of her (not ripping it off) and then there's a bit of ambiguity there that rather fits with Baron Impossible's idea of being uncertain about just who is the master.

Anyhow, just an idea. Good luck with it either way!

03 March 2005, 02:56 AM
Evil lookin master! Must have the servant under his spell - she looks like she enjoys the relationship. Whoa she better be careful who she is messin with! Who knows where it will take her ! :D

03 March 2005, 05:00 AM
Good stuff so far. As into demon porn as I am, I must agree about the breast touching. MYou've made it better. Just maybe have his arm around her waist?

03 March 2005, 04:52 PM (

Ok, my final pose (he says!) :p

oro - haha, well I would, but I think the groper in question is more of a leg than breast demon now :p

Mike - Yeah, nice idea - tried it out too. As my drapery drawing skills are not so great from my imagination I managed to enlist my conveniently willing girlfriend to pose with a sheet. In the end the cloth looked best how i have it in the latest drawing (IMO) but thanks for the comments!

Gord - angel/demon offspring!? cool

cuppacam - ahh good to hear, hopefully you\\\'ll like the latest poses then :)

Thanks all for the C&Cs, keep em coming it\\\'s a massive help!

03 March 2005, 04:57 PM
The image is far stronger now that the demon is less groping... It has a more classical elegance.

03 March 2005, 08:34 PM
thats looks excellent man, glad u made those changes.

keep goin!

03 March 2005, 08:37 PM
Ok, I am still working on this when I get the chance, just in case you think I've given up! :p

I am currently blocking in the initial colours and have sorted out a basic background to depict where the light is coming from. I am not at home now, but when I get back I will post what I have done so far (although maybe I should do a final 'Line art' sub so that I have that milestone checked..). Either way, should be posting up some arty stuff tomorrow.

04 April 2005, 06:40 PM (

ok, this is a quick blocking in of colour. I'm just trying to get the levels right. I think I will need to make the dark areas darker, but these are the colours I think I'll be using.

04 April 2005, 07:00 PM
Good concept, and the color scheme seems like it should be interesting. I should point out some flaws though- for one, her leg is very, very off- her thigh is too thin and doesnt seem to have any real shape. Her lower abdomen also needs to be longer- notice that her hand hangs too far below her waist. As for her chest upwards, you seem to have gotten that down well.
The only thing I could point out with the man is that his hand needs work, but its too early to tell what you'll do with that, so lets see.

04 April 2005, 07:44 PM
sidchagan - I see where you are coming from with the thigh, but the material in between her and the demon is covering up part of the leg and at this stage makes the thigh look an odd shape. But, when I have get into the shading of the material I hope it will look more realistic - I may add a fold to run along the edge of the leg to make it more obvious, otherwise I'll remove that bit of material completely and expose the full leg. As for the proportions, I used my own photographic references to accurately capture the pose so they should be pretty much bang on. maybe it's the shading in the drapery that gives the illusion of a high waist, or the current thigh problem? I agree with the hand, and will be spending time getting that area right, I want plenty of wrinkles and large nails. It's all still WIP :wip: so you're comments are valuable and thank you for your in-depth c&cs, hope to see you back when I get further along.

04 April 2005, 07:48 PM
Oh I can tell a goodpicture when I see one...I can tell this is gonna be another one of those pictures that's going to force me to work harder. :banghead: I love the lighting of the whole scene, and the expression of lust/forgiveness of the creature! Do you plan to make this photo realistic ? The coloring? Would be great to see this picture in a photo realstic style I think! Well anyway cant wait to see how you progress! Goodluck !:bounce:

04 April 2005, 08:51 PM
Noob! - Yes I think the whole pose is sorted now too. Thanks

CoreyArtE - Yeah, I want it to look as real as possible, it 'is' however my first attempt at anything like this so how it all pans out is going to be very interesting to me also! The colouring of the angelic character will be light and stereotypically 'good' and I have placed the the light source for the background nearer the top of the pic to help out with this. The demon will be darker and more detailed, adding to the contrast. Hopefully it should all come together quite nicely! :arteest:

Thanks for the comments! :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 02:02 PM (

Just starting to get some detail down. I've worked a little on the hair and face of the angel as well as adding a little detail to the demon. I don't like his face too much so will probably change it. We'll see :)

Thats looking nice my friend :D Fancy seeing another CM here. Good luck!

04 April 2005, 12:42 AM
I agree the demons face doesn't show the same expression it did in the sketch. It looks a bit removed...

04 April 2005, 01:38 AM
Very interesting Matt. For the benefit of those who don`t know Matthew, be advised that not only has he had his girlfriend pose for the picture, but the demon character looks CONSPICUOUSLY like a self portrait. So, yeah - who IS the master here?
OK, my nonsense aside, I think it looks like a very elegant image. You have used photography to get the humanoid characters realistic - You should think maybe about looking at some real images of birds and bats wings. At the moment the rudimentary (I know it`s WIP) "feather" texture does not flow correctly. In fact it seems to me to flow from a point more or less where the light source might be? Having the lighting seem to glow, illogically from underneath the wing gives an exciting atmospheric effect, I think. You often get very freaky lighting in christian art (which, on some level, is what this is!). I don`t know how it will work out when you have a fully drawn and textured wing - if the wing is bright and white, don`t let it pull focus from the figures - which are currently really strongly fore-grounded. At the moment I agree with people who are uncomfortable with the expressions - especially on the demon. A lot of people are talking about the ambiguity in this picture- which is great - but don`t let it confuse you. Who is the master NOW?? The subtextual stuff (where either party could ultimately have the real power) is there in the composition. Maybe it is more important (I`m thinking of the expressions in particular) to describe the current relationship, or the current apparent relationship. I`m just thinking about keeping a firm eye on the brief.
Er . . . what is she wearing? I like the idea of having nice flowing material, and of exposing a good bit of skin, but at the moment it looks like she has a sheet wrapped round her. In the context of a religious/fantasy style image, it looks a little . . . er . . . domestic? I think maybe you posed the image using a sheet, but you should maybe think about what you are trying to do with her clothing. Look at angels in old paintings for ideas. I`m thinking of those images where otherwise naked cherubs and classical gods and angels and so on have their modesty protected by very convenient sheets of flowing material - that aren`t clothes at all. I`m not saying you should do that - it might look silly, but it does give a dream-like surreal quality in some contexts. I think I am really just taking issue with the way the sheet is knotted - to me it looks a bit like the angel has just got out of a nice relaxing bath!
Really love the image though - I think it could be very powerful.
love phil

04 April 2005, 07:28 PM
 that's one hell of a post phil! Allow me to disect.. :)

Yes, I have already mentioned Zoe posed as the angel, and yes I am the demon, or at least the demon pose is mine (you think I'd let someone else pose! lol)

The wings will be sorted out, I haven't even thought about them as far as knowing I want some. So, yes I will study bat and bird wings and shall get it all looking more realistic instead of what they are now so don't worry :p

As also pointed out by HammaJamma the face is poor and as soon as I've finished here I will do it all properly, so see what you think in the next post. I am not happy with it either

The 'sheet' - okay it's a sheet... Complete with knot, but I think it does the job. I didn't want an elaborate piece of clothing, or one that fit the body well. I wanted to expose certain areas and also have drapes. I could change it around a bit but I will see how much time I get.

I'm glad you like it - I hope it is powerful, and in order to keep it's title valid I will now execute operation demon face.

 cheers mate!

04 April 2005, 08:21 PM (

Just spent about 20 mins on the face to try and capture the expression better. I feel it's improved but still not happy enough to start adding the detail. Might change the mouth somehow. Suggestions welcome of course! Ta

04 April 2005, 10:25 AM
hi M477...hello again..this time ur in the 2d section i see:)!...still remember ur gso it was in 3d!...nice concept and coming along fine!..wish u good!

04 April 2005, 06:34 PM
hey yunisirees! good to see you. Yes I'm hiding away in the 2d challenge this time - just got a new wacom and wanted to try it out. So far so good!

 cheers!

04 April 2005, 07:44 AM
Good stuff Matt,

I like the new composition - the reference really paid off :)

I'm interested in the darkness behind the two characters - would be really nice to see really rich shadows with lots of depth in the manner of Rembrandt or Caravaggio perhaps - would bring the figures forward and make the image more striking..?

The whole thing just keeps getting better though - top stuff - keep going.

04 April 2005, 06:48 PM (

Just a rough colour wip of the demon to help me work out the light direction and to blend the head into the body a bit.

Cheers James, I will certainly be requiring your help with that background. Which really, I should start to do properly in order to have it all match colourwise. The tutorial you showed me has helped loads in this project too! Thanks

04 April 2005, 07:17 PM (

getting there... slowly adding detail and colour. I'm liking the demon a bit better now, but still loads to do.

04 April 2005, 11:25 PM
Hi Matthew! Been watching this on and off from the start, and now you've added colour, it's really coming together. The angel I really like, her pose and expression are spot on, caught half way between revulsion and affection. The demon is almost there... I kind of like the red eyes better, but I think maybe a little less wrinkling on the brow would help the expression of need, as you've already got the inner ends of the eyebrows turned up in anguish, but it's kind of levelled out by all the wrinkles. Other than that I really like it, your anatomy on the demon's arms is very impressive, and I love the colour difference between the two. If you need any white bird wing references, I have a couple on my machine I've pulled from various sites if you'd like me to email them to you, as I draw angels quite a bit. Keep up the stirling work!

04 April 2005, 04:51 PM
wow..great job so far...try to do something about her leg ...near his kind of looks strange and contorded.....good luck!:)

04 April 2005, 05:34 PM
Hey oro, I'm on it! Should be done in the next post, tomorrow with luck. Thanks

Zepyhri - Good to see you here! I really like your style, and in many respects it is what I aim for. I'm trying to sort that brow out - not as straight forward as you'd think, with only the slightest change able to completely re-expression the face! As for wing references that would be extremely helpful, thanks :bounce: . I hope the wings turn out to be a good feature at the end. Maybe black feathers on the demon wings? But, many thanks for the comments!

Story will appear on my thread soon too, it has gone really deep and I've got so many ideas about the relationship it may take some time. Good for when I can't do any actual art.

04 April 2005, 05:41 PM
great,i agree with the previous crits.

its come a long way since the first concepts.

i am proud of u! hehe

04 April 2005, 06:50 PM (

NOOB - haha, thank you! I'm getting there. :p

This is a minor update. I changed that brow around a bit - looks a lot less wrinkled.

I have also reworked some other bits here and there. I want to move onto the background now and get that sorted out so hopefully there will be a post on that soon.

04 April 2005, 06:54 PM
clear improvement!...but you should ad a little more i thing (the leg) looks too linear....

04 April 2005, 09:35 AM
ok here is the thing, u r one of te few people who have this concept that allows them to use the sub surface scatering to the fullest. the simplest way to do it is to set ur brush to soft light or overlay and add a reddish streak where light meets the shadow. soft light paint mode is a powerful tool for achieving skin luminosity, try combining it with high saturation colours, it does wonders:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 10:27 AM
Coming on really well Matt.

I'd like to see more colour coming into the image - the basic blocks of tone are there but it would be nice to see some depth of tone coming through. Some more radical colours perhaps - greens and deep purples coming into the shadows richer yellows and reds in the highlights...

Quality of surface is another thing that could be worked on - try using some different brushes to break up the flat blocks of colour - particularly important in the background I think.

Really good though - Composition is dynamic and fills the space well - keep going :)

04 April 2005, 11:03 AM
Hiya Matthew,

I have looked at you thread and it coming along nicely... I really think this pose #8 ( is a more powerful image...there is eye contact and a nice sence of sexual tension...IMO :D

But if you are happy with your current image... she does look like she has the power over him...:) Maybe a wip in her right hand or a dagger... oh and her right Breast looks alittle flat compared to the left perky one...

Hope you dont mind...
Kind regards

04 April 2005, 12:00 PM
kool stuff its commin together now. good luck!

04 April 2005, 10:08 PM
oro - thanks! The leg does look linear.. But it is linear in the reference picture so I'm reluctant to change it - perhaps when I add the shadow it will look more believable. :)

nebezial - Thanks for dropping by, and thanks for the skin colour advice. I spend a fair amout of time changing the layer values and saturated colours and found that the face seemed to become much more lively. In the end I think I went over-kill and reverted. In the next post I have added a very subtle red-line to mainly the face area - but with time I should get it looking better.
Thanks again

Magnemar - Overkilled the use of colours again and went back on myself. I've done a quick colour test on the demons face and think you may be right. I'll add more colour variation to the material too - but hopefully I'll get the background done first, that way I can sample colours from it. :arteest:

element5 - there's always one! :p I have decided I'm gonna stick well and truly to this pose now otherwise I'll never finish! As for the whip or dagger, it would be nice and metallic items always look good in these pics - but it does not follow the story (which I will post at some point, honest). You're right with the left breast looking flat and I have made efforts to change the lighting to correct it in the next post. The problem is that the sheet was gathered on the left more than the right and gives the impression of the DD AA cup combo, doh! :)

Slav - Thanks friend :D

04 April 2005, 10:13 PM (

Ok, looks fairly unchanged but I have spent a little time (on what you can see at least!) on finding a good vivid colour for the demon and just added a bit to his face and still deciding wether or not to do the whole body in detail with this colour code. Also, added a slight shadow on the sheets to even the breast situation up a bit - and added a slight red-line contrast between the shadows/light on some skin. :)

04 April 2005, 10:01 AM (

Here is a relatively quick background test, I want to bring colour in basically. :p C&Cs welcome as ever!

04 April 2005, 03:11 AM
The colors are coming out great, especially on the demon. I still think the angel's legs need work, the area around her knee and calves is odd- you might try moving the demon's hand towards the left a bit.
VERY nice work on the cloth around her too, I like the texture and lighting on it.

04 April 2005, 08:41 PM (

Still going on this. I've added the colour to the whole demon and made some minor changes here and there. Just facing the task of detailing now.. deep breath :p

04 April 2005, 09:23 PM
This is coming along pretty well. I think you should make the top left background darker, so that the woman is the main focus of the picture.
Keep it up!

04 April 2005, 06:59 AM
Hi, Matt

Sorry I`ve not been posting (or emailing) for a bit. I have been busy completing hellish tasks for my own angelic master (mistress?). In the meantime this wprk has come alive. I love the demon, which looks less like you with its evil eyebrows. The pose and the colours are both spot on, I reckon. I think it is indicative of how much time you have spent on the faces, but there is a disparity in style between the two which I really like. The demon`s face cast`s deep shadows and it looks soliod and tactile, where the angel is very flat, with drawn on details, so that she looks almost like something from manga (not in terms of the shape and expression, obviously!) I hope this contrast survive any more detailing which you may do. Right, I won`t write an essay this time - sorry for my dodgier remarks - I had completely misunderstood the position of the wing and I`ve (I@ve) no idea why looking at it now. . .

04 April 2005, 08:26 AM
Hi Matt,

Looking good - coming along well. Couple of things I've spotted:

1.) As the background colours are now so strong they should be hinted at on the two characters. The knot of material on the master should pick up some of the reds and blues for example.

2.) I'd really like to see the area where the material touches her thigh worked on - it could be a really nice area with some soft shadowing but at the moment it's just flat. You could even take some specific reference images for it to make it more dynamic and interesting.

3.) Third point is just to keep going!

05 May 2005, 11:29 AM (

Spent time sorting out the colours and depths - off to the pub now. Still loads to do so c&cs welcome as always! After the "Deadline close" email I feel I really need to pull my finger out! :p

05 May 2005, 03:14 PM (

strikes me that I never actually submitted a final line art.. So here it is (or was!)

05 May 2005, 05:05 PM (

nothing too major I'm afraid. But which is best, this lighter 'glowing' angel or the previous duller version??

05 May 2005, 09:40 AM
Maybe the two characters are a bit too different in terms of illumination (too much contrast)?

05 May 2005, 11:00 AM
Maybe the two characters are a bit too different in terms of illumination (too much contrast)?

Yeah, on reflection you are right. I am reverting to the previous image and going to work on that for the next hour and put up a new post (hopefully). Thanks

05 May 2005, 12:30 PM
this cool contrast!!:bounce: and it's meaningful. i love it.but i know it not easy to balance the hamony contrast.i think the angel cloth is the key to should combine with the flash light and deep dark.or may be u have planned to do something
waiting for your update.
good luck my friend.:)

05 May 2005, 01:33 PM
Very cool! I like the luminous version, but I think that luminosity should go a little beyond the angel and also cause reflections/highlights on the demon's skin. Also, as of right now she looks a tad overexposed. I did a little colorpicking, and have you considered putting a bit more yellow in the highlights? At the moment, the highlights actually seem to have more blue (RGB-wise) in them than the shadows, which isn't necessarily a bad thing by itself, but yellow light usually appears nice and bright while you can still put enough detail in it to avoid the 'overexposed' look without much trouble. Just my 2 cents. :)

05 May 2005, 10:30 PM (

OK, more than 1 hour but hey! Highlights for the demon... Sticking with the exposure of the angel. I will add a layer to link the two characters together better than this and who knows where it is going to go, but I'm starting to enjoy doing it again so that's all that matters!

05 May 2005, 01:53 AM
Hi :D

Look like you are set to finish... it's looking nice. The demons face is looking a little flat though, perhaps try and bring out some depth by adding some highlights from above?

Good luck! :D

05 May 2005, 09:14 AM
The demons face is looking a little flat though, perhaps try and bring out some depth by adding some highlights from above?

Agreed - it is flat, I'm bogged down with the demon right now, but trying to sort him out right this minute! :wip: Hope I do finish! cheers

05 May 2005, 09:44 AM (

Ok - changed the face a bit. But, as time is ticking I'm going to move onto the wings and get something complete to work on with the remaining time. :)

05 May 2005, 09:13 PM (

Ok, I hoping I'm close to the finishing posts now, here's the final coloring stage - there may well be some tweaks though, so comment away please! :-)

05 May 2005, 07:45 PM
Don't like that previous post 1 little bit... So, to work I go! I am going to go back a few stages and start the finishing touches again

05 May 2005, 07:52 PM
looks great man! don't spend to much time on touch ups,u'll run outta time!

Those who see you will stare at you, and ponder over you: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world like a desert and overthrew its cities, who did not let his prisoners go home?’"

Well, that is it - I'm done. I have learnt an absolute load from doing this and as my very first attempt at a piece of cg art using a wacom pen and photoshop I am very pleased with my final piece. I would like to give a big shout out to all of the people who have commented on my thread - and wish everyone who entered the best of luck if they are in it to win it!

I am definately going to be back, and next time, with what I have learned from doing this I can't wait to get started!

Thanks again for all who had anything to do with this - especially Zoe (my girlfriend) who not only posed for me, but encouraged me from day one and kept on with off the thread advice from a non-cgartist point of view! X

oh and a big thanks to cgnetworks/talk - of course!

Hope to see you all again! :bounce:  :bounce:
