Latest Update: Final Image: Wish (

There was once a peaceful kingdom full of color and warmth. And in this kingdom lived a musician, a girl, who knew nothing but happiness. Her happiness grew when her true love proposed to her and her wedding was the most wonderful day that the land had seen in ages.

Then, one day, war arrived on the kingdom’s doorstep. One by one the neighboring kingdoms had fallen at the hands of a growing empire. It was only a matter of time before the girl’s homeland was conquered as well.

Determined to protect his wife, the girl’s husband decided to leave for war. As a parting gift, her husband picked a perfect lotus petal from the pond and placed it in her hair. To her he said, “So long as this lotus is alive, you will know that I am safe.” With that, her kissed her and left with the setting sun. The girl held calm as her husband departed, but the tears came and she wept when he had crossed the horizon, for she knew that the fight would be a hopeless one and her love would be lost.

A year had passed and lotus had not wilted. Day after day she wore the flower in her hair and day after day she prayed and looked to the horizon, playing her music to bring her lover home. News had arrived that the war was not fairing well and her worries only grew. One night, while alone in her bed, the girl remembered a fairy tale her grandmother had once told her. There was a lake in the woods where a spirit lived that was lonely and sad. If someone could bring a moment of peace to that spirit, then it would come forth and grant them a single wish.

Determined to bring her lover home, the girl left for the woods. After hours of wandering, she came upon a shimmering lake. Convinced that this was the place that her grandmother had spoken of, the girl perched herself on a rock and began to play her music. All of her sadness and all of her hopes flowed through her fingers and through her instrument. She wailed and sang and all of her being became song. Before long, a beautiful woman in flowing robes appeared before the girl.

“You sing so beautifully yet your soul is so full of sorrow. It comforts me to know that others understand the suffering that I feel so deeply. When my own lover died, I was overcome with grief and came to this lake to end my suffering. But, by taking my own life, I was cursed to remain here in my sadness for eternity. But in this moment of peace, I will grant you but one wish.”

The young girl, having come all this way to bring back her husband, paused. She realized that she was not alone in her suffering. She was selfish to believe that her sadness was hers alone. Her whole kingdom was feeling as she felt.

“I wish,” she said blinking back her tears, “for you to join your love in the afterlife.”

The spirit smiled for the first time in ages and with a nod, she disappeared to rejoin her long lost love.

Haha, don't rush me! I've been wracking my brain for the PERFECT idea, but it's going no where... What direction should I take this in? Help me out people... should I go Emotional? Sexy? Disturbing? Funny? Cute? I have some ideas for each... I'll try to draw up some sketches to see what you guys think.

03 March 2005, 05:35 PM

i think u shud do sumthin..different,thats all i can say.

03 March 2005, 05:41 PM
Jason Jason Jason! I wanna piccy. How about Emotional? Sexy? Disturbing? Funny? and Cute? all in one... now there's a challenge! :D

03 March 2005, 05:44 PM

Cant wait to see what you whip up.

03 March 2005, 09:28 PM
still nothing?
what are you doing, no inspiration yet?

03 March 2005, 09:41 PM (

Heres an idea I'm playing with. It's a summoner who summons strange creatures that act as loyal subjects. In this image, I have the summoner standing with her mount, some kind of half human half beast creature, and she is summoning a small flying creature to scout and gather information. I'm playing with the idea that she draws a circle with her fingers to create a portal for her servants to come out of.

03 March 2005, 09:43 PM
finally !!! looking great.nice concept

03 March 2005, 09:46 PM
Hey thats a pretty cool idea, no matter what you do I know it will be great

03 March 2005, 09:50 PM
Aaaannnd... breathe! Hmmm... looks like you are going for Emotional? Sexy? Disturbing? Funny? and Cute? all in one! Purple and black! The goth in me is moved to tears... Good looking idea here Jason! :)

03 March 2005, 10:08 PM
Once again, an artist (unintentionally) steals one of my initial concepts! Damn you, Jason.. :scream:

03 March 2005, 10:12 PM
You always blow me away with your work :] I think I'm going to really like the idea here - I have a feeling the magic will look very nifty.

I'm a little bit partial to... not pink, though, heheh. Perhaps going a little bit bluer in the background and a bit more purple in the magic-effect? Ah, it's just personal preference, though. *stomps on all pink things*

03 March 2005, 10:18 PM
DItto the "..Blown away .." part of what Linda says subscribing once more....awesome art in GSO i hope for more eye candy in this one too....have fun :)

03 March 2005, 10:29 PM
oh yeah gerbil knows his stuff !!

03 March 2005, 10:37 PM (

Ok, here's the summoner having her servants act more like handmaids. The face she is pulling out of the portal is supposed to be there so that she can take the flowers from its hair. I don't know if that came across very clearly...

03 March 2005, 10:38 PM
wow looks like it will be a success i like the idea of the circle thingy.

03 March 2005, 10:43 PM
Thanks for all of the comments, guys.

teknotek83: Well, you can still do summoning... the direction I'm heading is probably totally different than you would have taken.

Enayla: Thanks! I'm deffinitely thinking about getting rid of the pink and shifting everything toward blue and purple, like you suggested. I need to play with the colors a bit.

I still have to come up with a background... Right now I'm thinking magical forest. Maybe in twilight with glowing mushrooms?

03 March 2005, 10:53 PM
All of your work are fantastic! I look foward to see your final image in this challange.

Master & Servant

03 March 2005, 11:02 PM
wow looks like it will be a success i like the idea of the circle thingy.

Yep! Definitely a powerful design.

03 March 2005, 11:32 PM
looks very nice. I like the idea with the teleporter!

03 March 2005, 11:53 PM
Don't call me "teknotek83" when you know my real name :-p. I think I like the first concept better. For this one, I don't understand why she's summoning the other girl for flowers. Or maybe it just seems like she's abusing her summoning powers. Both have a really magical feel to them, though (is it because the violet palette that you're using?). More, please!

03 March 2005, 11:56 PM (

Ok, I've added in a background. I've also taken out the pixies that were doing the characters' hair. I may or may not add them back in later.

Now, I have two color schemes I'm playing with... What do you guys prefer?

03 March 2005, 11:58 PM
Purple! :)

03 March 2005, 11:59 PM
Green all the way. After seeing this, I don't really care for the story/background information. :p. It's so pretty!

03 March 2005, 12:04 AM

On the other hand, they both look good, so why not combine them? Use the purple one as a base scheme, and throw the green light onto the summoner and foreground from the portal? Purple and green is my favourite colour combo.

Shaping up into a really strong image, Jason, and I really like the concept. Can't wait to see where you go next!

( Oh, and I miss the pixies... ;) )

03 March 2005, 12:04 AM
Very promissing start. About composition there is no doubt, its just perfect, but I also have some scruples about the color scheme. Pink or violet is too much used for themes with fairy girls and similar. I would go with a red or brown here. Will give some fresh and more serious look to the pic. Just some suggestions, im sure whatever u'll do it will be amaizing at the end :) good luck!

03 March 2005, 12:09 AM
In my opinion..

03 March 2005, 12:27 AM (

More colors to choose from.

03 March 2005, 12:46 AM
Great start! I really liked your machineflesh entry alot, and look forward to watching this one develop.

I like the red color schemed version. I dig the contrast with greens.

03 March 2005, 12:48 AM
you're ideas are looking good, man. you've shown some really nice work on the boards, i'm sure you'll turn out another fine piece for this one.

03 March 2005, 12:53 AM
Im for that last, red-brown one :) I think it fits perfect for the theme.

03 March 2005, 01:18 AM
whoa~~for just a few hours and u came up with all these.its just amazing, all the color schemes looks good to me,however the choices are always urs:)

03 March 2005, 01:27 AM
I agree with Ninja for the colrscheme, and for the rest, well just like them:

03 March 2005, 02:55 AM
Wow, wonderful concept! I love all the color schemes, there's no way I can choose. I guess it depends on what kind of mood you're trying to capture. If you want mysterious with a hint of royalty, purple all the way. If you want something a bit more calming and natural, then go for green. But if you're looking for romantic and somewhat dark, then the red/black color scheme is probably what you should go for. Personally I like all of them. :)

I love the layout and the background though, it looks great!!

You and Enayla are inspiring me...I sort of want to take a part in the Challenge, but I have too many ideas to choose from! Gah!

Can't wait for updates!

03 March 2005, 03:48 AM

I'm new here, but I've been following your work for a while now.

Really neat concept. :applause: I think the red version has a little bit more depth than the other two.

Good luck. I look forward to more pictures!

03 March 2005, 04:35 AM
Looking good so far - All three colours work well I think, so whichever you end up choosing, it will look good. Initially, when there was only blue/purple and green, I preferred the blue/purple one. I also like the latest addition, the orange. Each one could be seen to relate to the seasons; the first (left) looks most like winter, the middle one looks like spring while the last one (right) looks like autumn. In my preference order it would be blue/purple first choice, then the orange in second, then finally the green.

03 March 2005, 05:11 AM
be aware than greens, when not warm, are often attributed to feelings of anxiety, discomfort or even insanity. the same applies with yellow, especially when its used with non-warm colours and non-warm variations of green.

id stick with the brown/red warm colour palette. conveys less mystery and more emotion/passion than a purply blue.

btw, good compositions and use of negative space, but keep working because it can always get better =]

Im for that last, red-brown one :) I think it fits perfect for the theme.

Same here...

03 March 2005, 07:02 AM
I am definately with Tommy on this.
Beautiful concept - very peaceful :)

03 March 2005, 07:53 AM
Good morning! Yeah, me too! Putting my purple obsession aside, I have to agree the autumnal colours work best!

03 March 2005, 08:46 AM
I'd like to put a vote in for the autmnul colours too!! (nice sketches BTW!!)

03 March 2005, 08:55 AM
It will be nice to be choosed some worm colors, like autumn's.:) Really nice entry from you.

03 March 2005, 09:52 AM
Finally some sketches! I think out of the coloured versions, I like the green one, since it looks very 'earthy'. A nice warm tone, inviting the viewer into the image. A good contrast to the darker, more foreboding image that was your grand space opera entry!

Sorry to have turned all art school on you there for a moment!

Looks like I am DEFINATELY gonna have to pull my finger out now!

03 March 2005, 10:21 AM
yeh autumn one is my fave too,if not that then the purple.

03 March 2005, 02:36 PM
very enchanting....very well done....I´ll go with purple and add to the mix some orange and red as well.

That´s my opinion...

All the best in the challenge.

03 March 2005, 03:15 PM
hi man....
good luck, well come....

03 March 2005, 03:26 PM
Thanks for all of the input guys. It sounds like most like the Autumn one followed by the Purple one.

But, I think I'm going to play around with some more compositions before settling with this one. Everything in it is a little bit static right now. I want something more gracefull if I'm going to make something beautiful. Don't know how I'm going to do it yet, but that's half the challenge :)

For me, the hard part is coming up with the perfect idea that keeps me inspired throughtout the painting process. The painting itself is just fun execution.

03 March 2005, 04:24 PM
very poetic picture!
you should take some warm color like brown, you put lot of cold color in you drawing.

03 March 2005, 05:04 PM
Good beginning, I like, on the level color my preference goes on the 3

Good luck for the continuation.

03 March 2005, 05:31 PM
nice composition. I like the one with the green background better.

03 March 2005, 05:32 PM
great concept! love the color schemes, especially the 3rd one, gives somewhat of an autumn athmosphere :D
keep it up!

03 March 2005, 05:34 PM
nice composition. I like the one with the green background better.

OUTCAST!!! shame on u!.

autumn autumn!!

oh man i like em all,i dunno.

03 March 2005, 08:10 PM
nice start . . . ike the idea.will watch how u work with great interest

03 March 2005, 08:34 PM
I might be a minority here, but I absolutely adore the purple one!
Those colors are just.. enchanting *drools all over keyboard*

03 March 2005, 09:05 PM
Good concept evil, i prefer the blue atmosphere

03 March 2005, 09:57 PM (

Ok, here's another idea:

Here's a girl who was magically transported into the Mystic Woods. While wandering around the woods looking for a way home she come upon a Unicorn. The unicorn, with her magic horn, sensed that the girl was of a Pure Heart. Because of this, and after hearing the poor girls story, the Unicorn pledged her loyalty to the girl and became her faithful servent. On their journey, they come upon a goblin tinkerer. Unlike his mischievious kin, this particular goblin is completely obsessed with gadgets and gizmos. When the girl shows him her wrist watch, he is fascinated and promises to travel with her and help her in anyway he can so long as she tells him of the machines of her world. And so the three (and the turtle) travel the Mystic Woods having all sorts of adventures while trying to find a way to send the girl back home.

03 March 2005, 10:06 PM
nice story, sounds like the makings of a masterpiece.

03 March 2005, 10:07 PM
I have a feeling this will be the concept you go with. It's so "Jason". :-p. I like this one a lot!

03 March 2005, 10:15 PM
i like how you drew the girl in black. alot of emotion

03 March 2005, 10:38 PM
I kind of like this story better than just a summoner. But how is the composition working so far? Do you think that this piece follows the theme clearly enough?

03 March 2005, 10:39 PM
Love the story concept. You can go really far with it, but I am not sure that we get the storyline from the image alone. Without knowing the story the characters just appear as friends on their merry way. I don't get the whole "servent feeling" going on. I must say I liked your last concept more. I got the idea of your work with one glance without explaination. I can't wait to see what you decide to go with. You will make it work no matter what you choose. :)

03 March 2005, 10:49 PM
Reeeeally nice concept jason, but i think the 'Master and servant' theme gets lost because there's three of them... and there's no clear heirarchy. Particularly if you take the image alone (without your text). I don't necessarily think that an image should shout 'Master and Servant' (although i think the winning piece will... if that's your motivation) but without any accompanying text this one wouldn't make me think there was a master or servant... Know what i mean...?

Still could be a lovely image though...

But i'm sure you can work in the theme... if anyone can...

03 March 2005, 10:49 PM
Hehheh! The story makes me think of the 'Wizard of Oz'! If I was to make a suggestion about the composition on this idea; how about twisting the viewpoint to a more forward perspective, with the characters moving toward us. You could then, force the perspective a bit, and have the girl lean out from behind the Unicorn toward the lower characters. Not completely frontways, just a bit of a twist... does that make any sense?

03 March 2005, 10:52 PM
That's true... This is more of a friend or companion image then servant... Back to the drawing board.

Maybe I can do an image of when one of her companions swears their loyalty to her... or something completely different

03 March 2005, 10:53 PM
I really like this new picture. One thing to think about is that when I first saw the picture (before reading your story), I thought that the goblin tinkerer was the master and the turtle was the servant. If the concept is centred around the girl and centaur then maybe you could alter the composition to emphasize that this is the important master/servant relationship in the scene.

03 March 2005, 10:59 PM
• 2D is allways hot, great start!

03 March 2005, 12:01 AM
sweet idea... looking forward to updates.

03 March 2005, 12:15 AM
I love all these mushy ideas!!!

It makes me want to change mine right away into a nice good old happy story, very cool!

03 March 2005, 12:18 AM
nice prelim digital sketch.

03 March 2005, 01:27 AM
I like the older idea better. There's more interest created by the portal that the summorer girl has created, as well as her centaur aid doing her hair. It seems more master-servant than the new one. Don't get me wrong, I like it. I just prefer the idea of the other one better.

03 March 2005, 02:21 AM
The last sketch é very good!!

Good luck!!

03 March 2005, 07:30 AM (

Here's another idea:

It's basically an evil woman breaking a unicorn's will to make it her loyal servent.

What do you guys think? Does it look too much like my machine flesh?

03 March 2005, 08:07 AM
This one rocks, seriously, i love your sketch , but when my girlfriend sees your work she is gonna go gaga.

03 March 2005, 08:51 AM
it doesn't looks like your machineflesh, but the choking element does tie the two images together. i think there's some psychological analysis in order, here. :-p the image definetely shows a "master and servant" feel, but it seems kind of empty at this stage. very interesting and violent concept.

03 March 2005, 09:02 AM
The struggling female sorta resembles your machine flesh, but I doubt if that will matter too much. Play around with it some more, I like the compisition of this one, makes me want to work harder.

03 March 2005, 09:10 AM
This is great Jason... love it! There's a much better sense of 'Master and Servant'. And the composition (with the angle of view and the curved trees) is just great!!

And knowing your technical skills i think it'd look fantastic finished...

03 March 2005, 09:34 AM
as much as i like it,u have seemed to drift into the dark vibe that i thought u weren't gunna do.its only similar to ure gso in the way of darkness.

i prefered the enchanting type drawing circles casting servants blah.
up 2 u.

03 March 2005, 09:54 AM
Hi, loved your serpent-king image, would have fitted it perfectly... personnally I love the concept with the pure hearted girl, but your last concept is maybe your strongest / the one that fits best to the theme. All the best!

03 March 2005, 10:31 AM
hey Jason, I think you've caught something interesting in your last sketch !
maybe the black girl's back could be a little more binded, just to have her head more distant from the unicorn's head.
Good luck, I'll follow your progress.

03 March 2005, 10:41 AM
yes..this is more relebant to the theme i would say. Although at some point u should so the enchanted creature story becuase its really nice....

Maybe this is a bit like ur machine flesh . . . enchanted creature being opressed byh something purely evil . . . and it kindas looks the smae colour wise, but i really like it still. maybe if u change genders.... maybe the centaur can be a man .. . or even reverse the whole thing and have the good centaur opressing the evil being.

03 March 2005, 10:47 AM
Very strong composition! I think this is probably the best, but in a sweetshop surrounded by your favourite chocolate it's difficult to choose... I think they could all work! It's not enough like your MachineFlesh entry to matter at all... Smashing! :)

03 March 2005, 10:49 AM
Knowing ur perfect technique, that pic will look awesome for sure, but a bit empty what concerns the story. Two equally beautifull women bodies or just faces will fight for viewers attention, so I think there wont bo enough power and contrast in this piece... But thats just my opinion.

03 March 2005, 11:51 AM
Wooow, i prefere the last sketchs it has an enormous potential, if you have the others concept in head proposes, but the last one is ecellent, I would like to see it devellop:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

03 March 2005, 03:43 PM
Thanks for all of the feedback, guys. I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with this concept, though. Still has some problems, like some of you pointed out, but atleast I'm back on track with the theme... I'll keep it as a maybe. I just want to find that perfect idea/composition... I really put too much pressure on myself when it comes to these contests

03 March 2005, 03:54 PM
You do realise that if you keep coming up with ideas like this, there won't be any left in the 'ideas bin' for anyone else...Lol! ;)

03 March 2005, 03:58 PM
This concept is better than the last one, but I still prefer the first one you came up with. It just seems more original. :hmm:

03 March 2005, 03:58 PM
I really put too much pressure on myself when it comes to these contests

just lay back and have some fun with it for a bit then, there's plenty of time to come up with a killer, although that one could well have some potential :)

03 March 2005, 06:15 PM
Nice concept and angle, looking forward to following this thread!

03 March 2005, 07:26 PM
with this post i put linda berkqvist on the 3rd page, lol

03 March 2005, 07:38 PM
Wow I really like the motion in this image. Great work.

So did the unicorn try to help the girl in this one too? Only the girl is like "HA! GOTCHA!"

03 March 2005, 07:51 PM
Great concepts so far! The lighting and character designs look promising, keep it up!

03 March 2005, 07:56 PM
Hi Jason,

I like your last sketch. But maybe not put the Girl on the unicorn's back.
I would make it more like a face to face fight between the two. Like a cowboy who just caught this Mustang with his lasso, Horse is kicking and jumping, cowboy standing firm and smoking a Marlbo... forget that last bit :)
The Master and Servant relation could be expressed by the diffrence in expression.
Unicorn looking scared and in wild panic, the girl scared but confident to become the master of the creature.

03 March 2005, 11:39 PM
hi jason , i prefer defenitly the newest concept , it has a great impact more than the first one , and i want to tell you that you are one of the best artist here , so keep the amazing work

03 March 2005, 11:52 PM
Hi Jason! Big fan of your work! Love the concepts for this contest both written and drawn. Best of luck and will follow your progress definately!

03 March 2005, 03:06 AM
new concept 1 - old concept 0. Stick to this new idea, it's dynamic and full of energy. That splashing of the water if done well will look great especially with the lighting you've chosen. I see nice moonlit highlights in the water.

03 March 2005, 07:07 AM
The both ideas look great, but I personally like the original idea a bit better. My two cents.

Look forward to seeing it's progression. :buttrock:

03 March 2005, 09:03 AM
Super concepts man, I don't know witch of the concepts work better but I belive you'll come up with something great like always :bounce:

03 March 2005, 09:05 AM
Another Cool Gothic art, Love ur machineflesh artwork man, look forward eagerly to the colouring progress,

GoodLux!!

03 March 2005, 09:46 AM
ow this last concept is really groovy. the design of your unicorn is great^^ i prefer this one than your first concpets. the picture is not straight and the composition/characters are more interesting. this is boring to see pictures where characters do _nothing_ ^^

03 March 2005, 12:08 PM
Hi, beautifull drawings! they carry a tremendous amount of storytelling, and your colors sketches are so good!
the last sketch got loads of emotion and movment, really good way to go...
I wish u the best luck.

03 March 2005, 12:13 PM
As always, your imagination and conceptualisation astounds me. Only a little like the machineflesh one and that only because of the closeness of the characters. otherwise about as close as brad and jen.

03 March 2005, 12:24 PM
yea dude u got awesome concepts tha u execute so well :bounce:

03 March 2005, 12:31 PM
i like the idea on page 7 best :) only thing at the moment it needs the story to tell people whats going on, not that matters its still great artwork and idea :)

03 March 2005, 12:36 PM
Hi Jason, just subscribed to your thread. Your technique is fantastic . Can't wait to see where you go with this one.
Very best of luck.

Hey jason, just wanted to pop in to say I really dig your artwork and concepts. They have a very unique flavour to them. Some of which I plan to model in 3d some day. I like the unicorn and the little girl concept a lot, but I feel it's lacking the relationship between a master and a servant. It would be nice to see the unicorn doing something for the girl, perhaps passing her some food or water, something like that, to show the concern and care for the girl. The girl should still be riding on the unicorn. The little goblin is a nice touch too, maybe you could have him look like he is selling some kinda food or drinks to tie the link. Maybe he has bags of food and stuff, sorta like a mobile food stall or something.

Nice stuff man.

03 March 2005, 02:33 PM
Hi ....nice technique you got there, I like your drawing style a lot. Only thing is the unicorn...which in my believing isn´t a´s some sort of mix between a unicorn and a centaur. But that´s a battle on words, not really an issue here. Maybe it´s a unitaur...:)

I´ll follow this

03 March 2005, 03:09 PM
Now I'm hooked!

This is the third concept I've seen from you and I liked them all!!!

edit: could be really dramatic to combine this one with the other idea of the girl lost in the forest, she could be running after them desperately trying to help them. the gnome on the ground bumped over and such. Seems to fit right in when I imagine it.

03 March 2005, 05:40 PM
next update mate!!

03 March 2005, 05:41 PM
Thanks for all of the feedback, guys.

jmBoekestein: That's not a bad idea... I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with this Unicorn theme, but if I do, I might try adding the other characters in for more storytelling.

Kragh: Yeah, I'm using the term Unicorn loosely. I like your term Unitaur :)

dom: Yes, one of the reason's I'm still exploring ideas is because the theme isn't really expressed as strongly as it should be in these images. I'm looking for ways.

I'm still not sure where I'm going to go with this contest. It's not that I don't like the concepts I'm coming up with, it's just that I want to push this image to the next level for the contest. I might come back to these other ideas sometime in the future when I'm not competing :)

Anyway, I feel like I'm coming down with a case of artist block  I have some other work to get out of the way first, anyway. Maybe a break will refresh my imagination.

03 March 2005, 05:43 PM
TELL ME ABOUT IT! i have that artists block right now... flooded with ideas but cant pick any cos waiting for the right one....

03 March 2005, 10:04 AM
It depends how strong you want it to be. Perhaps you might want to introduce an antagonist or something like that. However, I personally feel that that is overdone, the angry mean and evil creatures doing something..well...something bad or evil.. It'll be really interesting if you could bring out the theme whilst maintaining that sweet and innocent look as seen in that image with the goblin merchant.

I hope you get that great idea of yours soon.

03 March 2005, 10:12 AM
Hey Jason great great great to se you competiting again :)

Never understood why you didn't won the last..... You were the best by far in my opinion.

Your unicorn idea is a good idea but I think you can push it further, to make the idea of master/slave more subtil.

Can't wait to see your next ideas :)

03 March 2005, 01:03 PM
wow! that latest concept is cool - very good action and composition! I don't even dare to see rest of your concepts :buttrock:

03 March 2005, 03:59 PM
Thanks guys.

bonestudio: Thanks! Yeah, I think the good vs evil might be too much. I'm still trying to figure this out. Seeing everyone esle so far into their pieces is making me nervous.

dom: I'm thinking that maybe I should do something without an evil character. I used evil characters for my last two contests and it would be nice to do something different this time around. That's why I started my ideas in that direction, but in the end I just fell back on the old formula... Must be strong and resist!

W!L: Exactly my problem! I had this problem with the Space Opera as well. I don't think I stuck with an idea until I had like a couple weeks left until the deadline. But for some reason the Machineflesh one was my first idea. I was hoping for instant inspiration this time around, but no luck.

03 March 2005, 04:07 PM
bwahah , gerbil nervous , that is funny !

dude u got the concept, a typically cool , original idea,
what we've used to expect from you. Now you just
finish this pic. If a better - :surprised - idea comes to you later,
you got this one ready as backup , or you just finish
this one after the contest.

03 March 2005, 04:11 PM
The thing is there is no rush... we're only a week into this, and depending on how fast you work, there's no need to go with an idea that doesn't really grab you! It's fun watching thought processes anyway, and seeing ideas come and go... As Squibbit says, you could work on this fab idea for the time being... I'm suffering from colour block at the moment anyway... :hmm: I keep tweaking line, when I should be slapping down some tonals!

03 March 2005, 04:12 PM
im not really feeling the last concept, i like the second one, it feel wholesome that there on adventures and that. Are you going to do more concepts???

03 March 2005, 05:47 PM
Hey master bro ! great going ! best luck

03 March 2005, 08:31 PM
I'm liking the latest update. the struggling that's taking place makes it more interesting for me. The upshot works very nicely too.

03 March 2005, 08:37 PM
this is all a setup.....artist block my glutamus maximus

he is secretly working on a masterpiece and he will destroy us ALLLLLLLL!!!

03 March 2005, 12:43 AM
Goodluck on your piece dude.

03 March 2005, 01:14 AM
Very nice stuff!!! love the way you work, and your website.

03 March 2005, 03:30 AM
This seems like its going to be a great piece of work.
I haven't been here long but I'm quickly becoming a fan.

03 March 2005, 02:48 PM
I think the concepts are just as strong as each other, and it comes down to preferance - if you like action over cuteness. If your unsure, I wouldn't go with any of them and I think you should keep drawing-out ideas untill one slaps you in the face and you know it's the one!

03 March 2005, 05:18 PM
very nice ideea, good luck! ;)

03 March 2005, 05:51 PM
OOoooo ooooOOoooooooo, How come I missed this one?! *subscribing* Latest shetch? - very interesting! Cant wait to see where you take it, best of luck!

04 April 2005, 03:23 PM
Hmmm, sweet... I'd defenetly add a whip in the raiders right arm, perhaps a fire burning whip of chains, and that would shurley enchanched your idea of slavery (chains) and forced against her will (fire-whip)... Thou, on the other hand you might hate an idea....

04 April 2005, 03:25 PM
Well Evil_gerbil,

gotta say I'm suffering alongside you. I have all these funthings to do, but I can't get my head straight on them. It's gonna be lowsy thumbnailing for the rest of the day I guess.

Hope you get back into it soon. Love your stuff.

04 April 2005, 04:05 PM
just found your thread by randomly picking one.. impressive work.. i really love the idea with the forced unicorn-centaur-girl! keep up the good work.. i´ll have an eye on this one:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 04:19 PM
I really love all your concepts, I can see how you haven't settled on one thing yet! I really like the latest idea with the unicorn, but then I'm more partial to darker, dramatic images. I particularly like the dress you've hinted at on the evil woman. I look forward to seeing how you solve your image dilemma!

04 April 2005, 05:12 PM
Hey Jason,
You are a great artist, and I know (whatever ideia you choose) its coming a great pic!!
So, just relax, and let de fun begins:scream: !
good luck!!

Hey jason! you're going great mate! keep it up! gonna keep an eye on this thread..awesome!

04 April 2005, 03:58 AM
Jason should be back soon, you guys. He is wrapping up his share of work on the soon-to-be-released Matchstick Monsters ( book among many other projects. I'm just as anxious as you all are on what he's going to do with this challenge. I'm sure our impatience will pay off :p

04 April 2005, 01:08 PM
Hi jason! You'r concepts are looking great as always! Can't wait to see what the results of this may be!

04 April 2005, 04:44 AM
Hey, I love your style, and seen you around various places, gfxartist,, etc. Good luck with this contest, Im far behind you too... ugh again, no chance for me... too much talent here.

04 April 2005, 10:50 AM
I'll keep my eye on this. Beautiful concept, very naturally sketched, and remembering some of your other artwork I know it's gonna be good!

04 April 2005, 03:49 PM (

Okay, I think I may finally have my concept. Here it is:

There was a pond in the woods that could only be found when the moon was full. In that lake lived a spirit that was lonely and sad. If someone could bring peace to that spirit, then it would come forth and grant them a single wish.

Determined to bring her lover home, the girl left for the woods on the next full moon. After hours of wandering, she came upon a shimmering pond that seemed to glow in the moonlight. Convinced that this was the pond that her grandmother had spoken of, the girl perched herself on a rock and began to play her music.

You have lifted the curse of sorrow that I have placed upon myself. I will grant you one wish, child, for showing me that this sorrow is simply a part of life.”

“I wish to see my husband again.”

With that, the spirit smiled sadly and said to her softly, “You will.” Then as the morning sun rose from the east, the spirit faded away, finally free of her earthly turmoil…

_ _ _ _ _

That's all for now. If you took the time to read it, thanks. The image takes place when the spirit appears and tells her that she will grant her a wish. Your thoughts are welcome.

04 April 2005, 03:59 PM
Excellent! A true concept! I think this sounds like the one Jason! You make it live with the story. :D I can't wait!

04 April 2005, 04:06 PM
Very nice twist on the traditional genie story. It has a lot of culture embedded into it (which we haven't seen much of any challenge) and it gives a great opportunity for you to really put in some facial expressions. I really hope to see some vivacious colors in this one.

Good job, Jason. You seem to have found a very solid concept. Time to rest, right? :D

04 April 2005, 04:26 PM
Thanks guys. It won't really effect the image, but I'm thinking of changing the story a little.

I'm thinking the spirit should tell her story of her tragedy and how she drowned herself in that pool and became cursed to stay there for eternity. Then the girl will realize that the sadness she feels is not a punishment for her and her lover, but something that everyone goes through and is a part of life. Realizing this she uses her one wish to free the spirit from her eternal torment. Greatful, the spirit will warn her that when that lotus wilts, be it from war or old age, not to repeat the mistake the spirit made and go on living. Remembering that her husband went off to war to protect her in the first place, she agrees. Then the spirit will disapear with a smile on her face for the first time in a thousand years.

Or soemthing like that.

04 April 2005, 04:27 PM
hey jason! that sketch is looking very nice, especially the genie character,i'm diggin the long hair, and the whateva shes wearing.

where are u goin background wise??

hahaa maybe put a dark small figure in that back out of focus, that cud be her husband.

04 April 2005, 04:32 PM
VERY NICE CONCEPT.. and i can see the sketch coming alive whenb you start painting . . . well done.. can not wiat ot see more.. you are one of my favs!

04 April 2005, 04:51 PM
One other thing I wanted to mention is that I really love the fact that this story has a moral to it. A very versatile concept, Jason. Great stuff! (root beer)

04 April 2005, 06:22 PM
Thanks guys. But do you think it sticks to the theme enough? The girl is temporarily the master of the spirit because she played a song the moved the spirit. The spirit is then compelled to grant a wish, much like a genie. I don't know if I put enough emphasis on that.

04 April 2005, 06:27 PM
Thanks guys. But do you think it sticks to the theme enough? The girl is temporarily the master of the spirit because she played a song the moved the spirit. The spirit is then compelled to grant a wish, much like a genie. I don't know if I put enough emphasis on that.
Dude, I'm thinking making it a double meaning, if you can: The spirit forced to grant the wish, and the girl a slave to her desire to see her husband.

04 April 2005, 06:32 PM
Man... u always impressing us... Can´t hardly wait to see it in colours!

04 April 2005, 06:57 PM
great style!! i like it a lot!!:bounce:

04 April 2005, 10:24 PM
OK, let me say first, that your machineflesh tortured soul, was my favorite, and still is... But this... It's gonna be blast! I just love your coloring and feel for the light and ambient... I'm gonna watch this... wath good

About a story - Well I have a feeling that a WISH spell is kind of master here... Hear me out... The girl wants to see her husband, but can only be achieved thro *genie*'s wish, therefore girl is a slave of her desire, which can only be broken with wish! On the other hand *genie* is a slave to both girl and wish spell 'couse the wish is only thing that holds here's and girl's bound togeather! (I don't know if this makes any sense, couse my English is not at it's best when it comes to explain things) Anyhow keep it up!

04 April 2005, 01:23 AM

Sorta Mulan-esque?

Can't wait to see this realized...

04 April 2005, 07:56 AM
This last sketch is great dude! Let's see more! More!

04 April 2005, 04:04 PM
I think your story fits to the contest. It's a nice story is it all from you or it's inspired by some chinese tales ?

Anyway your sketche depict it very nicely, even if I think you could play more with the space. They are a bit too much on the same plan... I think you have your final idea, don't think anymore :) It's time for doing a piece as cool as your machinflesh one, but with more sensibility this time

04 April 2005, 06:03 PM
this is a great concept... the emotions drawn from the image shall be great and it fits the challange's description nicely. i can only imagine the colours and lighting possible in a sceen like this.

get to work this is going to be awesome.
ill be visting reguarly.

edt:just read the previous page... dont change the story... ur new story takes value away from the image. i know it doesnt effect the image... but it will affect whoever reads it's perception of the image. definetly dont change the story.

also u asked it the link between master and servant is strong enough... it is there and its witty, the judges are sure to pick up on it and realise its connection. its a great piece

04 April 2005, 06:45 PM
It's a lovely concept. I like the composition....very classic......I like it a lot. It'll suit your style really well. I can see the finished piece in my head already.

Get cracking

Good luck

04 April 2005, 06:47 PM
finally an udpate! nice sketch, but that other pic was sooo
oo oooo original . o well , u can paint that other at another time

04 April 2005, 11:02 PM
Goddamnit, man... (sniff, sob)... just wanted to see what the hell you decided to work on and you gotta go ahead and make me cry with that heartwrenching story of yours! Sniff, sniff...

Seriously, though... great story. You make that up or is it based off a myth or something? Awesome. Great sketch too... has a bit of a classic feel to it. Really looking forward to seeing you develop this one. I will await your updates...

04 April 2005, 11:32 PM
Thanks for all of the feedback, guys!

THE Wizard: Yes, I suppose there are a lot of metaphorical master and slave elements going on :) I wasn't sure if those counted or not. I'm glad you guys think it does hehe.

bonestudio: I'm definitely going with this idea. Time to stop messing around, everyone else seems like they're almost done!

Squibbit: I liked that one too, but it wasn't what I was really looking for in this contest. Too many dark images lately... But maybe I'll pick it back up later, like you said.

artjunkie: Not any myth in particular. I'm terrible at creating short stories unless they are told like a myth. My Machineflesh was told like a myth as well. This one, though, I had some help from my girlfriend. Good to bounce ideas off of people :)

I'll update with a color comp or a more detailed drawing soon. Just trying to get some commission work and school stuff out of the way.

04 April 2005, 11:36 PM
yey! I love all your concepts. The last one was very dynamic. Love your new concept too!
You can go crazy with the lighting and stuff. Also very convincing facial expressions.
Just awesome!

Can't wait to see more!

04 April 2005, 06:45 AM
Too many dark images lately...

sweet, I been thinking that too... in a general sense, very
pleased to see some change

04 April 2005, 01:22 PM
Ooo...I really like the concept and the story. Nice composition too. Can't wait to see more. I think you should definitely go for this idea.

04 April 2005, 09:05 PM
Great concept and a fantastic story behind it! The composition works exremely well, so I hope you stick with this one. Can't wait for the rest!

04 April 2005, 10:18 PM
at last you get back to the challenge!

04 April 2005, 05:36 AM (

I'm trying to nail a rough color comp before I go into doing the final line drawing. What do you think?

04 April 2005, 06:05 AM
looking great, jason. the only thing i think worth mentioning is that there's a lot of space on the top. but then again, you have a beautiful setting, so it wouldn't hurt to see an extra bit of it :p. keep going. worst case scenario, you can crop :D

04 April 2005, 06:37 AM
yeh there is allot space on top, still looks great though, maybe the characters cud be a tad larger.

04 April 2005, 07:01 AM
I have to admit I like the open composition. With character work it's sometimes tempting to concentrate primarily on the figures, but here you're giving space to the environment which is a strong part of the story you're telling. And the picture works very well with the balance of the characters slightly off centre and the large tree behind. This is smashing Jason! You hardly even need to do a line drawing really! So you're finished then! :)

04 April 2005, 07:13 AM
i personally like it, i think that it misses the yellowish orage to accentuate some elements coz the background still lacks the vividness. but hey, i sa ur previous works, so im sure that u got a heck of a composition planned:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 08:45 AM
great Jason!

You catch the peaceful and nice moment... in beautiful garden!

keep on posting, cheers: Kornél

(sorry for my english)

04 April 2005, 10:38 AM
I'm trying to nail a rough color comp before I go into doing the final line drawing. What do you think?

I think it can be a wonderful scene, full of poetry BUT it will depends on how you will detail it.
Good luck, man, I'll keep an eye on it.

04 April 2005, 10:42 AM
your image stand out in the entry page !! nice lay out ,and great color !,I really love oriental style! and I think chinese landscape and your painting skill will make this piece come out perfect !

Omg jason! Why are you always forcing me to work harder! DARN YOU! This piece, especially the background is extremly amazing! * Corey angry and distrub rushes to his tablet and turns on painter and begains to draw like a madman *

I personaly dont like it croped..I love the background and think it should show..It would be cool if you made some kind of exagerated reflection in the water of the master and servant...

nice going jason~with anticipation and curiously waiting for what its gonna turn out to be..just a thought,i think the gal with the chinese musical instrument(pipa?)i dont know what to call that thing~:Dher right arm could be in a resting post, she seems like she's still playing with it,u may ignore the suggestion if the thats the intention u want:)i love that oriental fairy character design with a nice graceful movement to it,this is gonna be a kick ass piece!

I've loved every one of your concepts, looking back through this whole thread again. The latest one is a wonderful take on the genie idea, the design of the spirit is gorgeous, I love the flow of her kimono style sleeves and the slightly awed expression of the girl playing. Only thing I notcied on first glance, (though it becomes much clearer the longer you look at it), and of course bearing in mind this is just a concpet rough, is that the lines of the bridge and the back end of the spirt seem to merge, but that may be down to the similar colour you've used in the leaves of the tree. Other than that, its looking like it could be a winner!

04 April 2005, 12:56 PM
I like this new concept, Jason. The expression on the girl's face is wonderful even now, and will no doubt only improve with time. And I like that the shot isn't close in, that you've allowed the setting to tell part of the story too. That being said, I kind of agree with Teknotek about there maybe being too much space... only for me it strikies me that the left hand side feels a bit unnecessary at the moment. It could be cropped, or the red misty "tail" could be brought to the left side a bit more just to take up the space a bit. I like the open space, but with nothing foreground there at all, I feel like it makes it look a little off-center. But maybe that's just me. Either way, can always crop later. Can't wait to see your refinements on this one. Have fun...!

i think those colours are fantastic... they work extremly well. im not usually into composition so open but this works... well its perfect, i dont think i would let u change (really i know where u live:twisted: )great work... i love it
hanging on for the details and connot wait

Thanks for all of the feedback. I'm hearing mixed feelings about the composition being so open. Maybe once there's some detail in the image and more solidity to the background, it'll be easier to judge whether I should crop or rearange any elements. Now that I'm looking at it with a somewhat fresher eye, I think part of what makes the image look like it's crammed in the right is the red tree. It's touching the trail of the spirit making them one massive red shape. At anyrate, i'll make sure it feels right when I'm painting. I can always crop, like you guys said.

Robin: Yeah, I have a lot of negetive space on top, but I think all of the negative space adds to the tranquility of the image. When it was closer cropped, it felt more contained and tense. This feels more serene and dreamlike to me.

NOOB!: I might try making them a little bit larger, but not too much.

Poshspice: Thanks :) I kind of miss doing closeups on characters, though... It seems like all I've been doing lately are full body shots and large backgrounds. I need to do a portrait or something again... But anyway, these aren't necessarily how the characters are going to look. I'm going to get them more refined and maybe work on their design some before I go into my real colors.

nebezial: Right, I still have a lot to do as far as color balancing and things go. Which brings up a good question. Cool light or warm light?

kornel: Thank you :)

Arctis: Yes, definitely. I'm planning on puting some nice details here and there. I guess it just depends on how much time I'll have to spend on this. It's unfortunate that the deadline is shorter and that it falls on my semester finals...

monsitj: Thank you. I was afraid the bright red and green would be a little strong, but I guess it does help to make the image stand out.

CoreyArtE: Always glad to keep you working :) Yes, I've kind of shyed away from backgrounds in the past, so now I'm not giving myself an excuse. But why the hell did I do something with so many leave? lol. I'll deffinitely be playing around with reflections in the water. I just don't want it to be distracting, is all.

ms@zx: You bring up a good point. I'll try some different poses with the instrument at rest. I guess it would either be she's not playing being too busy looking at the spirit, or she is playing, but hasn't seen the spirit yet. But I kind of want to really show the expression of awe, so I might just take your advice.

Zepyhri: Yeah, the tangent of the trail and the bridge doesn't sit that well with me either. I'll definitely address that when I go to finish.

walrus: I'm actually thinking that I'm not going to make the spirit quite as wispy as I have her in the rough. It'll be more like a lot of flowing cloth that just gets more and more transparent as it goes away from her. So there should be some more sleave and skirt material in the left. But if it still feels unballanced, I might crop.

Thanks everyone. But what do you guys think about lighting? Should I go with an overall warm sunny light or a cool twilight? The lantern the spirit is holding will make a small warm light around the characters.

04 April 2005, 03:45 PM
Jason - I'd worry that the warm light would make the piece too "happy." It might just as well be a ethereal teacher instructing a student on how to play the instrument better. Cooler lights might add a bit more drama. Plus I'm a sucker for warm characters on cool backdrops and vice versa. So that's my subjective thoughts on it! :-)
Good luck!

04 April 2005, 05:03 PM
That's a good point. There is an overall somber mood to the story and I guess a warm feeling would not the best way to illustrate that.

hey there been a while since i have seen you around :) i am loving the sketches. this is going to be very nice! cant wait to see more.

Hi Jason
I must say your color palette have quite capture my eyes while surfing in the forums pages! Well, quite everything have been told so far I think. I'll go in the same position of others concerning the recroping, but I think you're right about your opinion concerning the space above the characters. It will be a fine and fun piece to work on! :buttrock:

Lookin Good.

I like the glowy fire fly thingy on her.

The environment is looking good to ..

04 April 2005, 08:59 AM
Hi Jason, nice new concept. I'ts getting harder and harder to keep up with the larger threads like yours, and you often repeat what's already been written. I have'nt even worked on mine for four days (caught a bug, so my energy levels have been pretty low) but i'm getting back into it this weekend.

I like the space in your shot, because it isn't just about your characters in your story, it involves the world in which they live. Without losing the background, I would'nt 'crop', I would simply bring the characters a little closer. Regarding the colour and mood, I would make it cool hues.....dusk.....with this traditionally being a time of magic, plus, if there was a moon in the sky it could work as a nice device to have it reflecting in the water next to them, tying your eye to the characters, which would work in case you're worried about the viewers eye wandering around with so much background.

I hope i've made sense, my head is still a little fuzzy from this bug I have.

Anyway, good luck with this, i'm sure it'll be great.

Nice colour concept, has potentual for some nice water reflections. everything sits well with me

04 April 2005, 09:15 AM
Nice looking idea so far! Agree with some of the others in terms of space around the canvas! Cant wait to see you update again! Good luck!

04 April 2005, 11:06 AM
looking carefully and there is nothing i want to crit... colours are very good and work well togther... This piece is very good and could be one of your best in my opinion..... the conection between the charaters is very good, even though you have a wide scope... cant wait to see it fin

04 April 2005, 03:53 PM
I really like the 'hazy' feeling that the color suggests. I don't know if that was what you were going for, but if so I really hope to see some light mist over the water.

It could contrast really nicely with the light given off by the spirit's lantern. Using the yellow light from the lantern will work great in terms of highlights - but mostly in the figures as opposed to the background. I'm mostly thinking of the red dress, which ought to look great.

I'd agree with the suggestion to add more to the top of the composition. If you look, the spirit is, verticially, dead center, and it definitely shows. If you added maybe 50% or so of her height to the top I think that would work great.

I don't think your composition is too open at all, except possibly in the immediate foreground. The bottom right edge is pretty empty right now. It seems like it would be risky to put too much down there as it could distract the eye, however I imagine you'll probably want some reflections or at least something to keep that from becoming too much of a gap in the composition.

This is really lovely, and it distinguishes itself from most of the other entries in subject matter as well as color.

04 April 2005, 07:29 PM
Excellent color scheme !!! You surpised me, I didn't expected such an environment while looking at your sketch :) I think the perspective of the bridge is a bit odd even if it isn't very defined yet

04 April 2005, 07:42 PM
cool, can't wait to see more...

Evil Gerbil goes oriental...Your piece is in great shape but i miss those dark and chaotic works of yours.

04 April 2005, 02:56 AM
this is very nice , i like the mood of the pic !

04 April 2005, 08:27 PM
Yay, happy to see our new idea for this challende. I really enjoyed your Machineflesh entry so Im lookinjg forward tothis one!

NIce idea, and I may be repeating whats been said before (dont have time to read EVERY response) but i just wanted to comment on the composition a bit. YEs there is alot of open space aroud the characters. COmpositionally I dont think it would matter, and would actually work very well for a regular illustration but given the theme, I wonder if it should be closer in on the characters since they are the important part for the competition. You could make it work though, you'll just have to be very careful in detailing your background to use that to lead the person's eye to those characters every way you can so they don’t get lost. Nice progress so far though, looking forward to more......

Great great great !
That's all:bounce:

04 April 2005, 09:14 PM
great concept jason. Being chinese myself, I can fully understand the beauty of this piece. Your drawing also shows your mastery of draftsmanship. Good stuff!

04 April 2005, 09:39 PM (

Ok, I'm going to go ahead with this basic layout. I'm not going to use any more line art from here on out so I'll just call this my line art milestone.

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the girl in white in the same pose or not...

04 April 2005, 09:53 PM
What!!! Your not going to paint over the line art section at a time like you normaly do ! Jason I grew to love that style ! AHhhh how could you ...How could you...!

I'm sure it'll look good though. And i'm curious to see how your paintings look when you just paint them without the line art guide

04 April 2005, 09:57 PM
You have just disarmed me. Beautiful flow of 'lines' and colors! My only critique at this point is the background light-grey-blue space, it makes a column with the female in white, and perhaps a stronger variation of its shape would be nice.

04 April 2005, 10:30 PM
CoreyArtE: Well, I still kind of am painting over line art since I did start with a line drawing. It's just that I normally find myself readjusting shapes so much that I don't end up with anything really sticking to the lines all too much. This happens a lot because my painting style is much more realistic than my line art style, which is more manga-esque.

oz haver: Good point about the blue negative space and the girl lining up. I'll be sure to adjust that so it isn't so strange looking. Thanks.

04 April 2005, 11:27 PM (

Starting to paint the spirit for now. I'm considering whether or not I want to decorate her face and hair with makeup and jewels or if I want it more plain.

What can I say... excellent!:applause:

04 April 2005, 01:22 AM
yes , I agree , exellent!

04 April 2005, 01:56 AM (

Just starting the girl as well. I know I shouldn't get so caught up in the details so soon... but I can't help it. I need to see those faces come out or it's just going to bug me when I work on everything else.

04 April 2005, 02:04 AM
I suggest putting some jewelleries, however minimal, on the spirit and none on the servant. It will help to distinguish between the master and servant even better.

I love your concept and I think you have made a very good choice for this challenge.

04 April 2005, 02:48 AM
Wow- I don't look for a week and bam! This is going to be fantastic. Hey- I sent you a message, did you get it?
