James McWilliams has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: Done and Dusted (

Well, there you go. Abandoned :D
It does the job, but I'm sick of the sight of it by now, hehe.

Now I can relax and go and play counterstrike :P

I've been impressed with the quality of the entries, some nice paintings here for sure. Good luck to everyone, it's been fun.

03 March 2005, 05:05 PM
Good to see you here too, James.

Hope it all goes well....

03 March 2005, 05:33 PM
Cheers, :D

Ok, some initial ideas i've jotted down...

Flocks of dedicated followers throwing themselves in front of harms way, as someone attempts to assassinate the ruler, the bodies pile up as the assassin tries to fire through but there are just too many, they overwhelm the assassin.

A master, dressed in ornate blood stained clothing, stands and pushes his young servant up to safety to a platform above; he stands with a fatal injury.(arrow in the back?) and he looks weak, using his last strength in a bid to save his servant from the pursuers that will soon arrive, the young servant unwilling to leave him to his death.

Not sure if I will show the pursuers, probably not… perhaps a shadow if anything, more of a hint.

An extreme close up of an eye lash/lid area, or other interesting body part (careful now! ;)) where small microscopic creatures/nano robots clean and maintain the humans body.

03 March 2005, 08:27 PM (

Just a quick concept...

03 March 2005, 11:50 PM (

Another element sketch, keeping an open mind on where to take this so I'm staying a bit vague for now :D

03 March 2005, 02:14 PM
Hmmm, thinking of another idea now....
A long panoramic composition, showing from left to right the varying stages of control and influence from a main scene on the right, down to the atomic level and beyond. Maybe a loop, the power coming back full circle at the end. I still want a dramatic scene to be the catalyst however.

03 March 2005, 02:34 PM
Another idea is of failing technology; how would masters of technology who become so reliant on it's aids cope when it fails?

i'll do some sketches tonight rather than blather on. :D

03 March 2005, 03:45 PM
Ya know, out of all the ideas, this one seems the most interesting one to me:

A master, dressed in ornate blood stained clothing, stands and pushes his young servant up to safety to a platform above; he stands with a fatal injury.(arrow in the back?) and he looks weak, using his last strength in a bid to save his servant from the pursuers that will soon arrive, the young servant unwilling to leave him to his death.

I think it somehow puts a twist on the entire master/servant concept, you know? Because the master is doing a service to his servant there.

03 March 2005, 05:27 PM
Yeh, i kept dwelling on it in my mind, but then i kept going off on a tangent looking for 'epic' and overblown ideas... I think i'll develop it and see what happens.

I'm thinking of a sacking of a palace, the fatally wounded master lifting up the young maid to a ledge above to hide her from the murderous looters, we see the palace in flames and widespread conflict as the insitutions that the master once ruled over are crumbling.

It might just work. :D As long as I don't ballz it up.

03 March 2005, 05:39 PM
Sounds like a great idea! Let's see some sketches :)

03 March 2005, 05:40 PM
yeh great style!!! lets see more!

03 March 2005, 01:22 AM (

Another very quick character sketch, gonna start proper on the scene tommorow. Easter holiday and no stress! :D

03 March 2005, 02:48 AM (

Changed the master and roughed up a composition idea, although I think i will try and bring it in closer to the characters in the next sketch.

03 March 2005, 11:01 AM
What period shall i place this concept in....

"WW2 russian estate/palace with invading nazis"

What do you guys think?
I like them both, but i want to decide before I start doing any real work and sit down with a wacom :D

03 March 2005, 11:14 AM
Sounds like a great idea, but you need to be very clever in your execution to ensure everyone else "gets it" straight away without having to read the blurb. That's what makes non-cliched artwork even harder to pull off, but much more rewarding when you do. I think poses and facial expression will be key to this one. Good luck.

03 March 2005, 12:19 PM
thanks, yeh it'll be a bit tricky.... I'll do some proper digtal sketches as soon as I have access to my wacom! Come on delivery men! get moving! :D

03 March 2005, 12:51 PM
Actually, i think i'm also gonna add a hound or two tearing at the master, perhaps one ripping /pulling his cape..... These people sacking the palace are nasty buggers eh? ;)

03 March 2005, 09:28 PM (

This is a marker sketch of two characters, trying to get a feel and I'm keeping them really simple and not working any details in for now.

03 March 2005, 01:34 AM
I like your sketch & your concept, can I suggest a change in environment though, it'd be good if they were pirates aboard a ship under siege. The DRAMA!

03 March 2005, 01:53 AM
I like your sketch & your concept, can I suggest a change in environment though, it'd be good if they were pirates aboard a ship under siege. The DRAMA!

Ooh i dunno... i'm still very unsure about the environment, but there will be a lot of drama in the background.

i've yet to really get any proper work done on this yet... I'm away from home for the easter weekend period.
Once I can sit down and really get some concept paintings done I will nail down the composition and location.

Ship sounds interesting, could even turn it to a sinking ship... Not sure about pirates though, i think i would like to do something more fantasy based (no elves or anything though).

Damn I'm really quite enjoying this challenge! :D good work from lots of people so far too.

03 March 2005, 02:06 AM

It looks like you are differentiating them through sex --male master+female servant. Nice solution.

Cool concept!

03 March 2005, 03:35 AM
your character sketches are really nice. The one with the over the shoulder view is very provocative. I think you should go with that one.

Run with it!!

Good Luck!!!

03 March 2005, 12:15 AM (

Ok, so i've been working out the poses, this is the master lifting the servant to safety, gonna be tricky in the sense that I think there is a rish that it might look like he is holding her back. Scanned in the layout paper and it looked awful! so i've colourised it so it looks a bit better. I'm considering making the servant knocked out... there will be people on the area above trying to reach down so that might help suggest what I want.

03 March 2005, 12:40 AM

Thanks, I wonder... the reason I am gravitating towards the new sketch position, is because I felt the over the shoulder one was a bit claustraphobic, i wanted to see more of the surroundings. hmmmm. Choices, choices :D

03 March 2005, 05:25 PM (

Sorry for the crappy image :D, some quick mouse art.
But here is a preliminary composition idea, Two ships side by side, the wounded master will be carrying his servant to lift her up to the man above (The woman is yet to be put into the scene, still working out pose). There will be a large mob behind the master on deck overwhelming a few remaining guards, the crew of the other ship will be also firing on the mob from the deck of the other ship. Crits very welcome.

03 March 2005, 05:35 PM
looks great so far McWill.

03 March 2005, 12:23 PM (

ok, so we have the mob on deck, some musketeers on the other ships deck shooting down. The cannon going off is going to messing up a few of the guys in the crowd, lots of splintering wood and I think I will make the servant a cabin boy. Thanks paperclip for the suggestion :D It won't be historical or anything, i'll make it fantasy based i think so I can go crazy on designing things.

03 March 2005, 09:34 PM
Nice progress but I think by added more area to the canvas there is a danger for the viewer losing focus on the Masters and servant and become confused of the related message of the image. I'm not suggesting you put is back the way it was, just that you want to highlight them , somehow, as the main elements.

03 March 2005, 09:47 PM
Yeah great design. A lot of energy.
I too think the composition and values will indicate that the mob is in the area of interest.
That would probably kinda distract from the master/servant scene.
Shouldn't be too hard to change.
It is of course your decision ... I'm pretty sure the result will be great either way.

03 March 2005, 01:24 AM
Thanks for the suggestion guys... i will indeed try and focus on the master and servant, although I do want the mob to be important to a degree because there will be a musketeer aiming for the killing shot towards the master from that area... i think the lighting will help steer the eye towards the master and servant, hopefully :D

03 March 2005, 01:42 AM (

This is the closet i'm gonna be getting to any form of line art, I tend to block stuff out really rough and then paint rather than sketch it out in detail.

03 March 2005, 01:46 AM (

Ok, so my wacom has arrived and i've started painting... I know, i know, the way I work is weird :D but i'm working on stuff as I feel like it, it's all gonna be layered so I can adjust things even near the end :D it's 10'000 pixals wide at the moment, which is killing my machine :)

03 March 2005, 02:00 AM
loooks promising, though characters look a bit stony, but it's just my opinion and as I can see you are not going to deal with character closeups after all

03 March 2005, 02:09 AM

Well, the characters will still be pretty large in an actual resolution sense considering the size of the painting but yes I have decided to make the 2 characters taking part in a grand scheme.

It could be that once I start getting into the character i could end up cropping the image to tighten it up, but i'll have to wait and see how I feel. I'll try and iron out those kinks in the characters though, have still not nailed down the poses yet because i keep changing my mind :D

03 March 2005, 03:48 PM
Yeah, I've never been to keen on the masters pose. He's has the pose of a shot putter - esp with one foot off the ground. Even a really strong man would have trouble throwing another human being over to the ship like that. And you said he's injured too! Get into a few poses yourself and see what feels right.

It's a nice image, with lots of movement, I think you'll have fun painting it.

03 March 2005, 09:51 PM
Oooh no... he's not throwing the kid, in anycase... i've decided to change it, the characters are going to be more in the forground. :D

03 March 2005, 09:53 PM
Sweet perspective and sketches you have going on there. Looks action packed.Cant wait to see how it all turns out !

03 March 2005, 09:55 PM
i'm diggin that wooden texture, keep goin!!

03 March 2005, 10:00 PM (

Ok, just an update on the background... Getting some colours down.

03 March 2005, 10:04 PM
thats looking excellent!

04 April 2005, 05:31 PM
Heey another codie! (ok I'm QA but hey) Looks cool so far, I particularly like the damage on the mast. The perspective seems to work nicely too, looking forward to seeing you progress :arteest:

04 April 2005, 08:50 PM

Hi, Thanks :D

good to see you here too

04 April 2005, 01:50 AM (

Been a very lazy person for a couple of days and playing the new Splinter cell.... done now though, so back to the painting tonight, not much more done so far.

04 April 2005, 02:52 AM
what's up dude,

You have a very technical approach, interesting. The texturing is coming out really nice too.
Keep it up. can't wait to see more progress.

My master & servant entry (

04 April 2005, 03:17 PM (

Hmmm, I guess there is a chance that I won't finish this... I think i've taken on too much other work as well as this and after leaving this and coming back I'm getting a cold feeling from it. I changed the poses a lot, infact the whole mood has changed because it is now more of a last stand. Oh well, we will see how it goes.

04 April 2005, 03:23 PM
oo half 2d half 3d? looks nice

04 April 2005, 03:29 PM
oo half 2d half 3d? looks nice

Nah, 2d only...photoshop. I tend to block stuff out like that and do some subtle shading as a base and then paint ontop.

04 April 2005, 12:28 PM
Keep going with it James - I really like the angle and composition so far.

The portrait format of one of your earlier sketches seemed to suit the focus of the picture more perhaps, as it led your eye to the vertical movement of the master and servant - would be difficult to get the notion of the ships across though I suppose...?

04 April 2005, 10:41 PM (

Ok, got some motivation back :D Thanks Mr Horn for the encouragement too, so you are back from the holiday then.

04 April 2005, 10:48 PM
looking very nice... i cant wait to see how this one develops great work!

04 April 2005, 11:20 PM
Thanks, hopefully i'll get it done. I haven't decided on the final poses yet, but I've decided to get the backdrop mostly done then I can spend the remaining time refining the main figures.

04 April 2005, 11:08 AM
Looking good, can't wait to see the ship in the background complete, I think it has heaps of potential for a really detailed design with ornate lanterns, cannons and loads of ropes!

Also, looking forward to seeing the mob on the deck - there is lots to do isn't there! I really hope you get it done, I'm sure you will.

Keep it going! :bounce:

04 April 2005, 11:35 PM
Cheers!... hopefully I'll get some more done soon. :D

04 April 2005, 11:44 PM
Oh man, i though you updated your piece... I was kinda waiting to see some update from you dude. But i guess i'll wait again... hehe.

04 April 2005, 01:35 AM (

Ok, so i got some work done on this it's time for bed though :D Work in a few hours :( (yawn)

04 April 2005, 02:27 AM
master and commmader feel.... love that.

04 April 2005, 01:16 AM (

Sorry for long time between last update, i've been really busy with music work. Anyhow, back to work on this now.

04 April 2005, 01:41 PM
wow seems very promising ! Will look forward :)

anyway : advice : I think yous hould try to play a lot with the contrast light of the night and lights of the fires... (the weapons on boats) could give great drawmatic atmosphere^^

04 April 2005, 02:01 PM

Cheers :D I'll have a play around once I get a bit further into the painting.

04 April 2005, 07:38 PM
still looking great!!

04 April 2005, 11:12 PM
This is looking good. Can't wait to see later stages in this. Good hustle.

04 April 2005, 01:48 AM (

Thanks for the comments guys :D

Managed to get a couple of hours in this morning ;) but I really gotta go to bed now!

04 April 2005, 10:38 PM (

Well, here is an alternate colour version.
Honest opinions on which you prefer the best would be much appreciated, because at the moment i prefer the new night time piece but frankly I am worried that is simply because it is the newest :D

04 April 2005, 08:22 AM
Good job! look very and smoke effect look very good!! great!!
You should perhaps add fingers which leave the grid by ground... by imagining slaves prisoner of the ship for example...:)

Good luck!! keep going on this way!!

04 April 2005, 08:27 AM
Nice James - definitely prefer the night image - has a more coherent 'whole' look to it...

04 April 2005, 02:04 PM
Awesome colours my man! Very atmospheric > hey on the right hand side of the cannon ball smash is that a person on fire. It would be a mighty cool effect if it was. No real comment, part from > get it finished! One nit pick though, the blood splatter has always bothered me. It looks very cutout & hard and flat.

Good work!

04 April 2005, 10:52 PM
Yo! Nah, it's not a blokey on fire... but there will be plenty of guys getting messed up a bit. The cannon ball will be going through a few people, possibly. :D
Lets hope we both get these done eh? I better start sorting this image's layers out though.... the file is 9000 odd pixals wide and is 564 Megs, it takes bloody ages to load/save! :D

04 April 2005, 01:26 AM (

Ok, I'm gonna start sorting these characters out now... heres what I have so far, now to bed!

04 April 2005, 02:40 AM
I like how the master & servant have become a greater part of the picture!

> It kind of looks like you already might be doing this, but if not, here's an idea>> You could make the opposing sides more distinguishable & possible cooler looking, If one of the forces where, pirates! The other would be a noble army. Obviously the ships styles would reflect this.

*Bad guys are always more likable so the master & and servant would look like there from the pirate ship :) Just an idea^

Dude have some of the mob jumping over from the other ship.

I'm liking this more & more.

04 April 2005, 04:54 PM
Cheers :D

Yeh, i'm gonna have a lot of mayhem, but I decided that i better nail down the main elements quickly, because we're running out of time! :scream:

04 April 2005, 01:53 PM
Wow, this has come on well since i last looked - very nice! :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 04:31 PM (

Ok... here goes, the character work begins!

04 April 2005, 04:36 PM
MAN ! reallly really nice evolving!

Love the way you put scene on!
anyway BE careful ON TEXTURING... your pic is a little to smooth it seems very looking like 3Dimentionnal without textures... try some effects and crashes on wood for exemple :)

anyway very very nice :)

04 April 2005, 04:39 PM
Cheers! :D

Yeh, I work this way and block out areas and I'll be coming back to add lots of debris and bodies on the deck.... I'll also be adding a lot more texture but I decided that I should sort the characters out before getting stuck on the details.

04 April 2005, 04:40 PM
Woah i remeber seeing this one from the begining and now look at it! What a change! aNYWAY tHIS IS LOOKING SWEET, anyway maybe you could change the pirate in the red coat to have a more dramatic pose, he looks alittle stiff and calm for the situation going on around him! But otherthan that I love the texture of the wooden floor of the boat! keep it up !

04 April 2005, 04:44 PM
Yeh, I know what you mean about the pose... i considered that, but I want to portray a calmness about him, you know like in historic sea battles such as trafalger where the admirals are walking about on deck giving orders as grapeshot, cannon balls, musket fire and the like are whizzing around, i guess thats why so many officers where killed in those days, real bravery. Hmm, that said if it's just looking awkward I might change it.

04 April 2005, 04:48 PM
Oh ok, I see what your saying..Hmm....well maybe try giving him an evil if he loves the choas going on around him? I also liked the picture when the priate guy on the right hand the other person next to him...But i know your not done yet so I wont crit on that... hey it would be cool if you showed a conoon ball or a bullet flinging past him, and he makes his last stand...I see you have siomething like that going on in the background...but try doing it also for the foreground pirate! Would be cooL!

04 April 2005, 04:59 PM
Yeh! good ideas, thanks :D

Don't worry, i'm still going to have the little cabin boy standind next to him.... firing off a musket rifle, i think i'm gonna have him mid shot, so he' kind of recoiling and his eyes closed and face contorted. Maybe.

04 April 2005, 05:02 PM
Well make sure you have the cabin boy scared out of his mind! This is probabaly his first time seeing such destruction !

04 April 2005, 05:07 PM
Well make sure you have the cabin boy scared out of his mind! This is probabaly his first time seeing such destruction !

Yeh, actually that makes me think that it could be nice if the master (the main pirate) has a hand on the boys shoulder, as a comfort of sorts... or something in that manner at least, i'll have to think about that :wip:

04 April 2005, 05:09 PM
yeah thats perfect! Oh, and to make it even better what if you had some birds flying over the scene...maybe in the foreground...Something peaceful in a choatic battle...I've seen it done before and it usualy looks pretty good, just food for thought...

04 April 2005, 07:42 PM
I knew i was missing a thread to look at and i was following this thread so nicely... oy

Anyway, great updates and i really dig the scene. You've add a lot of stuff since the last time i was here... the texturing is SWEEET!!! I like that fog effect on the background too. It gives it a mood and atmosphere. Can't wait to see this finish. More blood...more

cheers

04 April 2005, 08:39 PM (

Well, i'm probably going to redo the mans face... not sure I like it, I might go for more realism instead.

04 April 2005, 01:52 AM
Dude, totally redo the Pirate! He's easily the weakest part of a great image. I also don't like what he's currently wearing, it's very unexciting, plus his current head gear looks like a graduation hat! Research some cool pirate clothes for him too. I imagine pirates wearing mismatch dirty prestigious clothes, they’ve nicked, & decorated them with lot of jewelry they've also nicked <broaches and such.

&> For a Pirate I think he's missing a lot of pirate traits, like a beard, artificial hand, weird animal on shoulder, leg stump, bandanna under hat... blah, blah, blah < he’s gotta have his piraty goodness somewhere.

Hope that didn't sound to harsh^
Keep on trucking mate.

04 April 2005, 07:52 AM
good points! :D Although what he is currently wearing is not final, because I was working out his pose and the like and then I was gonna go back and fancy up the clothing, so it was by no means going to stay as plain as that. Good point about the hat though :D Don't worry, i'll sort him out ;)

04 April 2005, 08:20 AM
Hi James,

Good to see it coming along - top stuff.

One thing I'd say is that the pirate guy's neck seems a little short and thick maybe?

I really like his positioning though (and the sleeves are good too.)

04 April 2005, 08:32 PM
That advances your returned project parquet floor particularly is successful.

04 April 2005, 11:44 PM (

Right then... i've been away from this for a couple of days, but the deadline is looming and I've got to get my arse into gear or I fear I won't be finishing. Blocked the main character, still mincing over the final pose of the servant... i'm being too indecisive! Unfortunatly I'm probably gonna be quite busy over then next couple of weeks, so don't be suprised if this doesn't get finished :( (just a warning ;) ) But I will try!

04 April 2005, 05:10 AM
Jimmy, very good so far, continue the good work

I love the perspective and mood of your image

04 April 2005, 06:49 PM
It's looking good dude. THe details are coming along great. I hope you get to finish it.

04 April 2005, 01:59 AM
Mr Pirate is looking much tidier<

If it starts to look like you won't finish I'll crack out the whip!! (I'll need to put on my leathers first thou)

05 May 2005, 11:53 PM
Ok! no updates as such... but I'm out of my artist mood crisis and I'm gonna get this bloody finished! I really lost the passion and began disliking the image, but I've got a little bit back now... a little. :D

I ran in and got too fussy on the details too early on and that was a mistake, so this weekend I really better get my arse into gear and sort this picture out.

And if I don't finish it, then you can all call me Mary for a month or something. :P

05 May 2005, 12:09 AM
That's a good deal. Mary for a month, hehe. You got it. but i seriously want to see this finish. So push, push, push...paint, paint, paint...

cheers dude

05 May 2005, 01:42 AM (

Been lazy... so now I've gotta go into turbo mode and finish it! :D
Now off to bed.

05 May 2005, 07:37 AM
Good to see more work on it James!

Keep going - we'll both get finished hopefully....

Get that servant painted in!!

05 May 2005, 08:04 PM (

Working on the characters now :D , but here is the latest backdrop in the meantime.

05 May 2005, 08:16 PM
looking great man!

05 May 2005, 11:57 PM (

Ok, so here is the servant blocked in. If you have any crits on them so far then please do let me know. Now, i've decided that the cabin boy will be firing off a shot at a nearby enemy, so i'm going to expand the canvas slightly, as you can see by the empty space. I also toned down some of the background colours which were a tiny bit too strong i think. I'm quite happy, because I kept trying out different servant poses and could not decide which to choose, but I think i'm done now :D

05 May 2005, 12:01 AM
dnt have anything to say right coz i know u stl have a lot to do on the image, but tis a good progress, keep it up!!

05 May 2005, 10:43 PM
Thanks man :D

I should have a much more substantual update tommorow.

05 May 2005, 10:49 PM
wow it's going great man!!

looking better and better each time^^

05 May 2005, 01:23 AM (

Thanks for the support Neozoom, I see yours is progressing very well too! :D Funny because don't recall seeing it before. Guess it can be easy to miss threads.
Anyhow, I've added more rigging... more to come i'm sure, but I'm doing the characters now.

05 May 2005, 01:26 AM
This work just catch the eyes!! The contrast and the comp just work perfectly. Great work so far!

05 May 2005, 02:50 AM
Did you just update really quick? AWESOME dude. I really dig the special effects that you have. Very realistic. Keep it coming dude

05 May 2005, 02:37 AM (

Primarily working on the pirate, but thats enough for one night... well morning. ;)

05 May 2005, 03:34 PM (

Well, I stumbled out of bed at 1pm, slouched down at the computer and decided that I didn't like the pirates face much. So here is a new pirate head. :D

05 May 2005, 04:33 PM
Pretty good stuff man, I love this. I think you should make the pirates face little more angry. He looks kinda bored although one hell of action is happening around him. The perspective of his face is pretty weird, too. I´m looking forward to see this finished:thumbsup: .

Thanks for the crit Peteboy, I've modified the head a little, improved the hats angle , though I think i'll modify it further.
I've also started his clothing.

05 May 2005, 08:50 PM
With regards to the pirate looking too calm, I did that on purpose... the young cabin boy is going to be looking much more distressed. :D

05 May 2005, 09:03 PM
nice action scene , those old muskets are so cool

u will finish this in time, won't you ?

05 May 2005, 09:07 PM
Thanks! :D

I hope so! I'm going to work my backside off and make sure it's done. I sort of slowed down during the mid-period but the looming deadline has given me a boost.

here goes nothing ;)

05 May 2005, 11:19 PM (

Starting to bring the 'air' together, and give the area some atmosphere, more smoke and a unifying colour.
Onwards! :D

I'm also starting to put some cannons on the deck now... i'll have some dead crewmembers strewn over it, i think.

05 May 2005, 12:28 AM
Really nice colours mate. The atmosphere is really intense.

Right now there's no real connection between the master and servant, If the pirate’s hand rested on the child’s shoulder it would show his concern for the boys safety :)

Dude, it's looking sweet so make sure you get this one done, k!

I'd like to see generally more, exciting dynamic poses from your characters, you should especially note this for the crew running and fighting frantically!!

05 May 2005, 01:51 AM (

hey Louis! :D

Hows this?... i've started connecting the master and servant. They know they are doomed.
I would start to detail the arm now, but I better go to bed. Work and all tommorow :(

I'm pretty confident that I can finish this in time now, I think. :D

Goodnight! (well, morning)

05 May 2005, 07:39 AM
Interessant work. Like your point of view and concept. MAyb the characters could be a bit more dynamic...
Anyway good job

05 May 2005, 07:48 AM
Your picture is going better and better!!:applause: Good luck for the final one!!
Seen you soon!

05 May 2005, 09:15 AM
Thanks guys,

I think i'm going to try and make the two poses a little more interesting, thanks very much for your crits. Very helpful.

05 May 2005, 01:49 PM
I think generally what people are saying about the poses is, under the circumstances of your picture, you expect poeple to be poised in a more intense posture. Eg. the pirates hand you added - which bothers me a little - it looks very relaxed drooped over the boys shoulder, where it possible would look better clinging at the boys tunic, keeping him close. I think the pirates posture while a touch relaxed too, you could get away with, as he's probably relaxing his arm to steady his shot.

05 May 2005, 02:11 PM
Yeh, I started to redo the poses at lunch, i'll try and make some progress tonight and give you an update. :D

Thanks for the help.

05 May 2005, 12:47 AM (

Greetings all... here is the updated master pose, I want him to be almost posing for a statue. A right old poser he is, you see. :D The young boy is not done yet so i'll get back to you with him.

8 days left :O, but i'll do it! Or call me Mary.

05 May 2005, 08:22 AM
It seems better. I think you can add some wind in the hair of your master. He's got his wrap who is in the wind but nothing matter to his hair.

05 May 2005, 04:19 PM (

Ok, here is the updated pose.... I'm leaving this for now, and i'm going to start blocking in the other characters, I don't want to waste too much time fiddling and doing the main character details until the later stages,. The pirates arm is missing and I will improve the hand to servant contact, but that will come later.

05 May 2005, 06:44 PM
lookin good!

05 May 2005, 08:00 PM
Chop Chop Mary!
The foot log & blowing wind is a nice touch!

05 May 2005, 09:50 PM
Thanks Big Boi. :D

Authentic, good catch: i'll do that.

Chop Chop Mary!
The foot log & blowing wind is a nice touch!

I'm working, i'm working! :D I just woke up to be honest, I was damn tired... too many late nights. Where is your update on yours? ;)

05 May 2005, 01:22 AM (

Mostly i've been sorting out layers and trying to get the image to a more managable state ready for the next stage.
Anyhow, time to turn in for the night.

05 May 2005, 10:26 AM
I love the lighting you have in this piece and also the details on the deck, good luck

Thank you :D

05 May 2005, 11:09 PM (

Ho hum... feels like not much progress tonight, but it's getting there. :D

05 May 2005, 11:33 PM
 WOW

Thát is what you call lighting and coloring...! :bounce: That 'gradients'-look ('clean look'/'vector look') looks gréat to me! It looks also véry dynamic!

Really stunning work here! Keep on going ;) (with sometimes some sleep ;) ),

Yes, i agree with Dutchman. How'd you do that? What type of color palette you used? May i ask what kind of monitor you have?

05 May 2005, 03:17 AM
Man, those light effects look awesome! Looking forward to seeing more detail in the final image! Nice work!

05 May 2005, 11:56 AM
Thanks guys :D

Well, there is no secret technique or anything, and It's hard to describe how you paint stuff without just showing... I use the standard hard edge and soft brushes and just paint. At first I just block out the darkest tone, in order to get the shape I want, then I use the soft brush and paint in the shadows and gradients, then I just go in and paint in the details on top. I guess you just need to make sure you identify where your light sources are coming from and just work out in your head how you think it should work. Pretty easy really, I use the same principles for light as I use for perspective, so I just eyeball it.

My monitor is a wacom cintiq, although I also use my standard CRT monitor at work to do this during lunch with a standard wacom. Monitor type doesn't really matter to how well an image comes out, unless it's a REALLY bad monitor (ie. broken ;) ).

Palette wise, I just paint colours as I feel it, so to speak.... (Damn, i sound like a Jedi!) no palette as such, I just wing it. :D It's pretty simple really, I just paint colours that I think will look good, there is no system or rule as such.

Hope that helps,

05 May 2005, 05:11 PM
Laight end color-super!! End-compozishn.Veri gud work!!

05 May 2005, 10:57 PM (

More detailing on the pirate as well as scene details, now onto the cabin boy. I'm going to make the cabin boy look a bt more scared....

05 May 2005, 12:41 AM
I love this piece. Nice compo and and atmosphere. Good Hustle!

05 May 2005, 02:07 AM (

Just changed the cabin boys face... i thought that he would probably have his eyes closed due to the shot going off.

Thats enough for one morning though... time for shut eye. ;)

05 May 2005, 08:16 AM
It starts to be cool. Don't give up :scream:

05 May 2005, 07:24 PM (

Starting the mob now... will probably add more up in the rigging etc. I have to be careful though, time and all.

05 May 2005, 02:32 AM (

This will do for now.

05 May 2005, 03:03 AM
You know,

call me a mad gibbering fool, but during the "beginning to hate image" phase I decided to flip the canvas.... I think it might work better, but it may just be that it's fresh to my eyes. I really don't know.

05 May 2005, 07:25 AM
Works much better like this, dude. It's hard to work on one image for so long. I "hate" my image to you know :)

05 May 2005, 04:50 PM

Thanks, I'm glad i'm not the only one. ;)

05 May 2005, 05:24 PM
Awesome painting! I think you should repaint the master and servants hands (the ones not holding the gun). They look kinda odd.. Keep it up!

05 May 2005, 05:43 PM
Hi James:thumbsup:

Long time no post...sorry about that!
Hardly anything to crit in this pic-- only that the background people look a little too flat, but that's it! Oh and as someone else commented, I'd redo the hands also. I LOVE the lighting in this picture, very dramatic, especially the explosion in the middle ground. Keep it up. Only a little way to go!
P.S- If it's any comfort, I hate my picture too, but that's more understandable :)

Keep at it, it definitely has promise. Good luck in the judging!:bounce:

05 May 2005, 08:13 PM
Thanks guys :D

I'll look into the hands, I guess i've been looking at it so long now that I cannot see the wood for the trees.

05 May 2005, 08:15 PM
amazin, almost feel like ur in the pic *if u put it full screen*

05 May 2005, 08:39 PM
It's refreshing to see it flipped, and I think you should continue to paint it this way - Big - Butt though... I prefer it the other way!
> As we naturally read from left to right, your original format leads us up & onto the main characters, where as now you lead us away, plus the cannon ball leads us off the page.

The new crew make it so much more lively, nice one geez.

05 May 2005, 09:56 PM
Like this piece alot, it have great potential.
There is something about the composition that I feel is not spot on, maybe you should try to crop it a bit so ur main characters gets bigger in the scene ?
I had the same problem with my scene, I had to scale up my characters to get them more in focus.
Other than that I have nothing to add but good things.
Keep up the good work .

05 May 2005, 10:11 PM
Wow, such dynamism! The colors are lovely too. I love those coloristic accents, which add to the motion feeling of the pic. I really like it flipped:D

05 May 2005, 11:18 AM
Huh, great rendering skills! Keep it up! And I like those silhuets of the attackers.. r u planning to keep them that way? It would be great so the viewer wont be distracted by too many details on the pic... specially human figure details, which r most distracting and complex. good entry!

05 May 2005, 12:07 AM
Thanks for the support everyone, much appreciated.
I still haven't decided if I will flip it yet, but we'll see. Louis has a point about the change in focus when it is flipped. :D

I've not managed to get as much as I wanted to this weekend... late nights and early mornings have caught up with me and I've slept more than I wanted to :D

Still... i will finish it, but I'm not sure it will be to the level I was aiming for.

Thanks again.

05 May 2005, 01:54 AM (

I better start tyring to think of a title...

Anyhow, the next step will be to add lots of clutter to the deck perhaps. Low detail stuff of course, but just to give some more interest. I'll be working into the two guys on the right hand side a tiny bit more, but they are going to remain pretty unrefined.

05 May 2005, 02:03 AM
Jimmy, wow you did an amazing job, I love pirate scenes, and you did an amazing job with yours, the lighting is very impressive.

you're almost done, must feel great, I posted my final yesterday and it feels great.

Good luck with the finishing touch

05 May 2005, 03:07 AM
Thanks arlutik. :D I'll check yours out tommorow, but I gotta get to bed now, 4am!

Anyhow, I've been experimenting... and here I am trying to give a more 'in there' feeling by adding the blurred foreground elements.

Just playing with an idea, I don't know if I'll go with it.

05 May 2005, 03:19 AM
Oh, the lighting is bringing this to life! My lights/fire abilitity harbors much suckage, so I love seeing it done well.

Best of luck in the Challenge,

05 May 2005, 10:21 PM (

hello all,

I've decided to redo the cabin boy a bit... new face, hand, change of pose etc.
I wanted to make more of the connection between the two. That'll be done soon, gotta do his hair and some detail, but that won't take too long. Then it's just some more touches and i'll submit it tommorow in the nick of time (no doubt as the timer just reaches 00.02 seconds). :D

Any suggestions for titles by the way? I'm crap with that sort of thing.

05 May 2005, 10:24 PM
looking great, full of action... the atmosphere is looking good. Good luck dude!!

05 May 2005, 01:21 AM (

Ok, now it's just overall polishing and adding more little touches...

Title? hmmmm.

05 May 2005, 07:52 AM
impressive work!!
beautiful color.nice comp an lighting. :buttrock:
best luck.

05 May 2005, 06:25 PM
This is really good, I do like the foreground elements, it makes you feel as though you're hiding from the battle (and why wouldn't you!). The boy looks good now, less of a pansy :p

The atmosphere is really good, you're mist is excellent and the special effects look great.. I'll stop now, good luck!

05 May 2005, 11:16 PM (

Well, there you go. Abandoned :D
It does the job, but I'm sick of the sight of it by now, hehe.

Now I can relax and go and play counterstrike :P

I've been impressed with the quality of the entries, some nice paintings here for sure. Good luck to everyone, it's been fun.

05 May 2005, 11:18 PM
