This'll be my first time doing something like this...Should be fun.

03 March 2005, 06:21 PM
good luck C, I'm new to this too....should be quite an experience.

03 March 2005, 07:09 PM
Thanks, frog! Good luck to you too :)

I'm almost finished with my concept sketch...I've gotta say, concepting with pencil isn't my forte at all. I'll have it up within the afternoon.

03 March 2005, 07:56 PM (

Here's the basic concept I came up with. I'm not that good at drawing, but I think I got my point across. Basically, the 49-year-old servant is carrying the master, who is an 8-year-old girl, down the muddy road towards home. Rainclouds in the distance, sun peeking out from behind the clouds, grassy hills and scattered trees. There is also a splintery post fence going down one side of the road.

I'll probably add onto the scene as I start the modeling, putting something in the girl's hand, defining facial characteristics, etc.

I'm trying to depict a scene of great loyalty and love between the master and servant...complete loyalty coming from the servant, and touching love from the master to the servant. Here's a bit on the profiles I came up with.

Character info:

Name: Amanda
Age: 8
Eyes: Grey
Hair: Short, brown
Clothes in scene: Bright red dress, slightly damp from rain, decorated with assorted flowers in places, no shoes or socks.

Name: Edmond
Age: 49
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Gray/white
Clothes in scene: Semi-butler outfit; black tuxedo, white shirt, black tie, black pants and shoes, both of which have mud on them from walking in the rain.

The environment: Just rained, so everything is wet, obviously. Puddles dot the landscape and the road, and muddy footprints/cart tracks are on the road. The grass is a beautiful green, and flowers are drinking the newly fallen water, becoming more and more developed.

That's basically what I have so far. I'll start on the modeling of the scene first, then move into the characters.

best of luck 2 u 2.

Began modeling the landscape and scenery today. Didn't take too long to get some good hills together, but it'll be tricky getting the grass to look right. I also finished the beginning stages for the fence posts; pulled together the basic shape in Edit Poly mode, Turbosmoothed it, then added a Displace modifier with a Dent map. I should have the middle fence boards completed tomorrow, and probably the fence itself in full models.

03 March 2005, 03:58 PM (

Quick update on the fence. Added a few more posts and the actual boards, as well as dirt from the hole where the post goes into the ground. I'll probably do some brush up on the dirt, but it'll be at a distance, and mostly covered by grass, so I don't think it'll need too much work.

03 March 2005, 12:36 AM (

Did some adjusting to the post and board, then applied some textures to see if they fit with each other. I think this'll wrap it up for the modeling of the fence.

03 March 2005, 01:43 AM (

Started the basic modeling on Edmond, the servant. Didn't have a concept drawing for him...just a mind-image.

03 March 2005, 07:27 AM (

Added an ear and tweaked out some details on his face. Not really that happy with his ear though, so I'll tweak that out later.

03 March 2005, 07:18 AM (

Tweaked out the ear, added some detail. Tweaked out some the seams on the front of the head, chin, and neck.

03 March 2005, 03:09 PM (

Edmond's basic head texture. The ear UV's are off a bit, and I've yet to put some hair on him.

03 March 2005, 03:22 PM
that ear looks it wants to suck everything in ...

04 April 2005, 04:26 AM
Hi AmazingC,

Thanks for the encouragement, hope you do well! I really like your concept.
I agree with Squibbit, there is something odd with that ear.

04 April 2005, 04:34 AM
Sensitive idea. Work on your characters ears though. At least try to style them in a way that won't distract the viewer from what your trying to convey. Good over all approach to the scene layout. Good stuff.

04 April 2005, 05:24 AM
Thanks for the input, guys :). Yes, the ear looks funky, and I'm in the process of cleaning that up right now. It's my first time doing a complete ear, and I'm still in the learning process of that.

In other news, I've been thinking about the concept, and I might, in playing around with it, change it just a bit. Keeping the characters the same, but changing the scene, environment, and a few other details. I'll come up with a quick concept tomorrow and post it.

Almost done texturing Edmond.

04 April 2005, 05:45 AM (

Thanks to comments by other users, the ear was fixed and the texture was adjusted. I added Max 7's SSS skin shader for a bit more realism, and did some more adjusting to the mapping.

04 April 2005, 09:24 PM (

Started up on Edmond's body. Got pretty far. Next will be the arms and hands.

04 April 2005, 01:20 AM (

Arm modeled out. Hand next.

04 April 2005, 12:46 AM (

Finished tweaking out the hand. Next is legs.

Hey man study the ear to have a helezonic shape inside...There are lots of tutorials of it on the web, you can find one and follow it...Texturing is well-done for the fences...Waiting for your progress closely...
Good Luck!!!

I'll look into it, thanks!

04 April 2005, 05:56 AM (

Finished the legs. I didn't add any toes or extra detail to the feet, since they'll be covered by shoes.

04 April 2005, 06:16 AM (

Here's a render of the complete body with the head attached. I did some more editing on the highly controversial ear, and changed it a more realistic angle. I'll start modeling on his clothes next.

04 April 2005, 05:19 PM (

Started modeling on the tuxedo coat.

04 April 2005, 09:43 PM (

I did some work on the clothes today. Still details to be refined, but I like how it's looking so far.

04 April 2005, 02:31 AM (

Did a bunch more tweaking on the coat and undercoat, then did the pants. There's still a bit of tweaking on the pants yet, but here's the almost finished model. I used the body model in the middle picture to show correct scaling, since in the other two, the arms look a bit too long and the pants a bit too short, but that's just an illusion.

04 April 2005, 02:30 PM
I'm considering remodeling Edmond's seems to be a little too flat and unimaginative.

04 April 2005, 07:21 AM
As I stated before, I'm drawing up a new concept for the surroundings and situation. The other one didn't quite get across the message I wanted, and I didn't find it easy (with an outsider mindset) to distinguish master from servant. I'll hopefully have the finished concept up tomorrow or Sunday.

04 April 2005, 04:45 PM (

Like I had said, I'm changing the scene a bit. Edmond's character will stay the same, but he'll be the master, and Amanda will be the servant, a maid girl. Since I hadn't done much modeling on the girl nor the environment, I decided to do it interior.

It'll be the inside of a mansion, right by the stairs, as seen in the sketch. Edmond will be smiling and handing a bundle of flowers to Amanda, who has her hand out accepting them. She'll be in a maid outfit, so I think this way, it'll be easier to tell who's the master and who's the servant. With this, I still want to portray a mutual love/respect they have for each other.

I got modo 102 a few days ago (highly recommended for all modelers!), so I'll be working on the interior while I learn the aspects of it to detail out Edmond's face and model Amanda.

04 April 2005, 12:27 AM (

Started on the stairs.

04 April 2005, 12:30 AM (

Another view of the stairs.

04 April 2005, 03:55 AM (

Modeled the vase and plant. Added some basic colors to tell everything apart.

After some comtemplating, I've decided to drop the challenge. I've got a whole bunch of things going on right, a two week vacation coming up, and some other commitments I can't avoid. It was fun, and I might finish my project later for an image anyways. Good luck to everyone! I'll continue watching the contest. Have fun!
