Peter Elvin has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Texturing: Finnaly! (

After ive had an accident with my textures. I told myself today to redo them. So here is the start. Haha, think ive never said this but I better sneak somewhere to do some cosmetic study, the black under her eyes look a bit weird. What I really have been putting down most time texturing is the Lips. Which I hope you like.

03 March 2005, 11:57 AM
Just sayin that this competition will be fun and enjoyable, Good luck to all in this competition. Im going to do my best.

03 March 2005, 01:42 PM (

Aah yes... I have just began makin some basic sketching. And Ive been tryin to sketch out the concept of my plan as well. The master, will be parasites, which comes from a giant Halfplant/HalfBioMech thing. The parasites are masters over their preys, but the Giant 'plant' is the headmaster. There will be certain thing that will be apparent for those 'infected' The feeling towards master is an struggling to not beacome fully converted... Desparately looking for hope.

03 March 2005, 07:33 PM
Began sketching some environment just recently. Hopefully it will work out good within the composition.

03 March 2005, 06:54 PM (

Allright, In previous update I did'nt include anything on the parasite beeing. This is something I mixed up pretty quick to give a feel of the organic part. Take or give, a better remake of this, covered with leaves, and mirage, and such, with some mecanical implants on well choosen spots.

Ill be back soon with the full 'Concept story' So stay tuned.

03 March 2005, 10:11 PM
Hey Peter ,
I like the parasite idea of controlling its prey, look forward to the story as I think this will be important to help get your idea across. Good luck with the challenge.

03 March 2005, 10:38 PM
Thank you very much. Im goin to do my best with modelling. Altho, I know Im probably not goin to be up to some peoples standard, im goin to try my best and extend my limits.

Cheers, and good luck to you too!

03 March 2005, 07:31 PM
Hi Peter

the concept is great, also i like your sketch. quiet dark topic, is she the only "infected" or will you add some "halfmuteated" beings as well?
how do the "connections" on their victims work? physical attachments?
Thank you very much. Im goin to do my best with modelling. Altho, I know Im probably not goin to be up to some peoples standard, im goin to try my best and extend my limits. thats what those challenges are meant to be for.
keep it up, atill waiting for the "full story" :)
oh, best luck and loadsa fun of course,

03 March 2005, 08:01 PM
very nice idea.

I think you'll have to add more randomness to those tentacles though. I like your sketch, you should try making some sketches that portray the emotional state of your characters, it will help I think.

Good luck.

03 March 2005, 07:15 AM (

This is the control mesh of a parasited head. It has yet to get its parasited features. But when im finished with the 'character' I will add those.

Crits are welcomed.
Also, ill hang on to my story a while longer. I got to define a few things, and give it more reason.

Thanks, and happy modelling.

03 March 2005, 09:55 AM (

After seeing some poeple use Zrbush, I was utterly amazed. And then, I said to myself... I need to master Zbrush myself. So, I ran a fast Zbrush Pass just recently.. And this is how the 1st pass turned out. Rendered in max, only a halfassed skin shader used.

03 March 2005, 02:06 PM (

Allright, I feel finished fiddeling with Zbrush for the modelling part. I saved the eyes since this guy is mostly parasitet there is something special about their eyes that tell you that they are parasitet. But more on that later. Since 3dsmax is getting really slow running this model I think I will try to make the texturing for this from within Zbrush will be my first Texturing In Zbrush job, so wish me luck.

Happy modelling.

03 March 2005, 03:24 PM
getting there and god luck whith texturing in zbrush och ha en bra dag o lycka till,
see you

03 March 2005, 04:30 PM
Nice sketches. Keep at the model. Wrinkles are a mutha...

03 March 2005, 10:16 AM (

The image is the head of the Girls uncle. She has always loved him, and he has taken care of her when she has had it hard with her parents. To protect herself in harsh times, her uncle thought her how to use weapons, and how to fight. Can she stand against her own beloved, and the treat of the parasites?

They came unheard of, they came in masses, and they came silent as the whispers of the wind. One day, my world was convered by mindless beasts of once family and friends. The source of all was yet unknown. I searched for people who was still of my kind, but I was left alone... I hid myself to crie in vain, thus I though that all was lost.

In the ashes of my old hometown, I saw something arise above the rooftops that still soared in the sky.

In hope to end the cause of my beloved earths dispair. I took myself there to investigate what could have stood above the buildings.

Terrified by the thought that mankind was coming to an end. I grabbed on to my Gun, and made myself ready to fight, giving up my life for whats right.

03 March 2005, 10:48 AM (

Here\\\'s the concept of a situation. However, the final scene will be bigger and more complex. You will also see the \\\'head parasite\\\' in the image.

I tried to get a feel of sorrow, into the image. She do not want to dispose of him.

And that is also kind of the final feel.

the actual master and servant here Is that She Is the Servant to the Fate which has her befallen. And in a double sense, Its also the Parasited who\\\'s master over the rest of human kind.

Many ways to view it, but thats the way art should be!

03 March 2005, 02:19 PM
:bounce: Hi ! mireneye
 Good idea and concept design. :) Hope to see work you coming.:bounce:

03 March 2005, 11:34 PM
Thanks alot!. Actually, the second concept was mostly to get down the situation. I did'nt pay much attention to how the character did look other then how sad the girl is, and how stiff and and unnormal behaviour the recently parasited beeings are.

Im goin to work on the female head model as soon as I get my ass off Zbrush for a while.. Im always doin my base meshes in 3dsmax first ;).

Cheers, and good luck to you to.

03 March 2005, 11:46 PM
keep going swedish mate , önskar dig lycka till, min svenska är lika dålig som min engelska.
see you and

03 March 2005, 10:40 AM (

Here is my first Zbrush Texturing pass. I sincerily hope you like it. Since her uncle is one who has been parasited, he is supposed to look alil dried up, and with unusual expressed veins, beacuse of his body is operating on a much higher level then usual.

Thanks for the kind words!

03 March 2005, 11:43 AM
Hey man,

Looks like you've made a promising start but the first thing I noticed is that the sides of the chin are way out (about a 3 cm readius around that spot). This area needs to be pulled back into the face quite a lot. Doing this should immediately make the head a much more balanced look as the other features are all good.

I hope this helps, good luck in the competition.

03 March 2005, 02:51 PM
Hey Peter! nice progress man!
If I may give an opinion, Try to smooth the veins´corner, I think that a soft transition beetwen the veins and the skin will give a better look!
Keep it up man!!

03 March 2005, 03:03 PM
Veins are supposed to be overly detailed. But your making a point. I think ill smooth them out a tiny bit. Thanks. And Ill see what I can do about the Chin.

Wish me luck!

04 April 2005, 01:05 AM
I agree work on the chin a bit make there be some form of noticable change between the lips and the tip of the chin. Otherwise good work on the texturing.

04 April 2005, 02:20 PM (

Ok, here is the start on the female head. Surprisingly enough I finished off the Max modelling quite quick this time, only took about 2 houers to get to this. Now its time to make the ears ofcourse ;). Waa, only 47 days left now, I need to hurry up!. Lots to do, so Im off to work some more.

Cheers, and thanks all, im still workin on the ole' man and his Chin problems!

BTW, I WARN you all ITS FIRST APRIL, Be on your guard!!!

04 April 2005, 02:43 PM
Hi Peter - really good start on your modeling and zbrush adds a lot to it!
Lycka till - kul med ännu en svensk på banan

04 April 2005, 02:50 PM
Thank you. Yeah, Zbrush is wonderful once you get to know it. Im amazed about the results I can get with it myself. However, my lack of knowlage with the application has put up some issues im going to have to solve. An example would be my lack of knowlage of how to pose up the whole final scene in Zbrush which I normally would do in 3dsmax. However, if all post produsction tricks are allowed, I think I know of a way im going to archive what I want.

Haha, jo har sett en hel del på senaste. Folk har väl insett hur kul D är!
Lucka till själv.

04 April 2005, 03:40 PM
Good luck with your challenge mate. I think that you should have some references and topology research when you are modeling.
Good job so far. You have to make it up..

Good luck :)

04 April 2005, 06:54 PM
Hey there. Thx for the comments. I dont rigged anything I directyl modeled everything.

About ur work. I really like the concept . But the comments that the others give are treu. The chin is really to much to the front. And his forehead is a little bit to flat. The women is better but her chin is a little too small, I think hé. You dont have to change it ,but its my opinion

Keep on goiing mate

04 April 2005, 11:49 PM
I know, ive been solving those kinds of issues all day. Thanks for making additional notes on the female head. I agree with that very much.

04 April 2005, 04:43 AM
I think your getting better at the modeling. I notice on the "uncle's" head there was a strange dip in the eye - nose region that needs some work. Also the area under the lips need to be rounder.
I think it will help the audience with visualizing your idea if you do a simple 3d model layout of what your scene is going to look like. Use simple box-like figures for people substitutes, etc.

I'm glad that you entered this competition! Its a great experience and chance to receive some great critiques and input from the masters. Thats why I entered the competition (I wouldn't mind winning one of the prizes either).

Best of luck to you.

04 April 2005, 06:08 AM
Yeah, ive been thinking to make one of those. Box and Biped representations. Thank you very much for making some additional critic. I will see what can be done and more importantly what should be done. Remember that her uncle is'nt quite human.

04 April 2005, 06:15 AM
great work on head, waiting for next move, daxs för mig att börja dagens pass.
see you and

04 April 2005, 01:38 PM
Thank you. Haha, whilist I cant keep up to your speed ill continue doing my best. Haha, this is my Second female head ever. And I think im doing really good concidering Ive learned what I know myself and from tutorials. And I have time to beacome really good!, still in Swedish Secondary school!. Tack, ska själv uppdatera här så fort jag är klar med ett par till saker.

04 April 2005, 03:53 PM (

Allright, here is the scene with the 'situation' bare in mind this scene is without the "Master" whom's servant is the man"uncle" threatend to his parasited life with a gun from his brothers daughter. In a sense, he is a former master to her, he thought her how to use the gun, and how to fight for her life. Now she is uing it to end her masters life so that he can be the servant of a parasite no more.

04 April 2005, 10:20 PM
Hi Pete!

Sorry, took me a bit to check back, but i looked over your work carefully and made a few thoughts, that hopefully support your great work. as i see you use the same combination as i do. Masscorrections, i mostly tweak on the lowpoly maxmodel. displacement tweaks are fast in photoshop, thats for the finetweaks.

Uncle: i dont think the chin is wrong. just define the jawbone and it will fit. but his mouthpositioning from the profile, could use a slight correction. lay your finger across your lips,, from chin to nosetip. this almost builds a line. from sideview, i'd move the lips left, til they almost build a line with the nose.that should also solve the cheeks volume problem. he seems happy. as apaarasited as he is, i don't think you wanted him to smile :)
as for the zbrushsession, don't overhaste, use (transform) sub- add- / inflat- and smooth-brushes to get bulges and wrinkles exactly placed as supposed to.

Girl (niece): good start so far. my advice for volumeadjustments here are to start with her backhead, place a help primitive, a sphere. with the same amount as lthe loop spline that run vertically over her head from sideview, editmesh, flatten sides. this is a fast controll way to get a head into the right volume. a human backhead almost is spherical.
forehead, is actually too hard falling together, after having tweaked the backhead, you can just pull back the foreheads highest point a bit, less a "shipfrontshape" more a boxy.
if not needed the helpbody anymore, delete it :)
Eyes: my advice to easy achieve a fitting eyeline, place a shphere into the "eyehole". first, it gives you imediately controll over the angles, second, you aswell get the referenceheights that are required to see if the anatomical details are places correctly.
the controllwith of the eylines makes eyewith in between the eyes. the eye is just a spheresegment. lids have mass, so avoid intersections with the reference eyeballs :)
best model on a lowpoly model on a lowpoly eyeyball and have a referencecopy of it flipped over the frontal xaxis on 1 subdivision, with an eyeball ref on -x position and as well meshsmove on it (for example right facehalf level0, eyesphere 12 segments radius 1.37cm or whatever left referencecopy with mesh-smove...), to have controll on vertexplacements.
the Procerus (muscle between the eyes, on top of the nose)is too wide yet, about 50%. you can controll it, lay 3 fingers between your eyes :)

mouth, same correction as metioned by uncle., in girlscase, move her Larynx, (uhm tube in front neckpart where air and food go trough...) backwards.
lips lower could use a pull down including jav verts, to have same mass like upper lips., and the chin-underlip line is a slight bit short as well. to get ears placed right, i advive you to model them seperately. just close the hole (polymodeling: shift-drag edge, targetweld) select the new faces, detach to object, then, cut n move ear, hide the rest, so its easier to keep the ooverview.not every detail has to have the correct mass, to avoid a too high polycount in zb, keep it low, but make sure, you have all major details cutted, so in zb, you have an easy game to give em the right mass.

Your skinshader so far looks good.
a trick to get texturing fast done is using zbrush with photoshop in combination.
open your displacementmap in photoshop. colorize it. then save as jpg. Import it into texture of zbrush. (i think you already found out about the vertiaclly flipped thing in zb) use projectionmaster and photoshop at the same time. so for largearea things like allover filters or levelcorrections, you can use ps, for seeing exactly what you do and paint microdetails, use zbrush. i found that out and it works quiet fine for me.

for the composition pov, i'd closed a bit up, eventually. to have a playfield to show the expressions on them.

keep it up mate, and don't overhaste. at the end, just the result counts.
And like steven stahlberg once said: "there is no fast cg. just good cg." speed doesnt matter at the end. pay all details the attention they deserve.
i hope those sugestions help another crazy viking to send a great creation into the place ;)

keep on rocking!
cheers:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 10:27 PM (

Okey, I think I fixed most of the Models issues. So now Topology and features shoudl be just right. Due to my lack of knowlage about Zbrush I accidentialy lost my texturing for her.. EEK, i had been workin on a few houers on it. However I thought I would like to show you how it is progressing. As you can see its only pure shader and lighting right now. I will resume texturing very soon!

04 April 2005, 10:41 PM
Alot of good tips up there. Ill look them through and ill see what'll be done. Also, nows a good chance to stydy up on some of your use of anathomy words. One of my friends actually mentioned that it might not have been the Chin but the jawline, so ill se which one will fit the best.

Right now, I mostly skimmed through the changes needed. And read up on how you suggest I do them, and I will be looking it though from time to time untill Ive perfectioised it.

Sthalberg is totally right, im not going to speed it though. Altho, I feel that I have little time. And want to finish it off. As always, ill do my best.

Thanks alot, you're a great help to me giving me all these advices, and I as an artist appriciate that very much, your encouraging and helping words will continue guiding me forward and bring you all that Piece of Art!

May the true hands of an artist be with you my friend!

04 April 2005, 10:47 PM
most welcome. I am looking forward to your next update and try to follow your work as good as i can. and thank you very much for your nice words as well.
Keep up your great work and wish you most of all a lot of fun! cheers

Thank you very much!, Im currently tryin to catch up on a few things I ought to have learned by now. Altho, it has taken me longer then expected. Some things that are vital for me to know to really pull some ideas off. Anyway, I have a backup plan, so to speak, which ill use in worst case scenario.

Good luck to you to, continue doing your best!

04 April 2005, 09:48 PM
I am very sorry for not updating here for so long. I can only say that I have had many things ongoin in my life. I bet you understand. Ill try to get back to it as soon as things get solved.. Hoping its not to late.
