Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: Fool's Paradise (

Thanks Gunilla, good luck to you too,

I came home and found there were a few hours left so i have made some alterations. i'm happier with the focus of the image now as the lights and darks are more contrasting, which makes the master and servants stand out more.

thanks once again to all who helped me.

03 March 2005, 12:28 PM (

Thought id try to go for a happy image with my 3d entry. Although the little critters are struggling to lift their master they do take joy out of adding to his happy demeanor.

03 March 2005, 12:33 PM
Fantastic, looks too promising! :scream:

Best luck and loadsa fun, now lets rock!

03 March 2005, 12:37 PM
I really like your concept.. I'll keep an eye on this...

03 March 2005, 01:31 PM
That's really cute!! Cool!!

03 March 2005, 02:42 PM
I agree. This one does look like one to watch.

03 March 2005, 02:44 PM
thanks for all the encouragement everyone, it certainly helps with motivation

03 March 2005, 08:57 PM
hi conundrum,

I like your concept and the colors fit well together. Good start.

Maybe there could be a tree with some sort of fruits hanging high wich he wants to reach.
therefore they have to lift him up.

03 March 2005, 02:47 PM (

after reading the rules i thought id make him more human, havn't yet done the face but this is all i can do for today

03 March 2005, 07:32 PM
I really like your concept. It's good to see someone doing a light hearted take on the whole issue. Everyone else seems to be doing doom and gloom. I'll definatly watch this one. :D

03 March 2005, 11:42 AM (

Just some progress, added the face, and put a bit more detail into some areas, hopefully my sketch should be completed by today or at modt tomorrow.

03 March 2005, 12:20 PM
Pretty fresh concept and interesting too.

Good to see you again.

03 March 2005, 12:25 PM
hehe the concept is very funny :D

it is a nice idea ;)
wait to see more

03 March 2005, 12:27 PM
I really like this drawing.. its just so, happy :)

03 March 2005, 12:31 PM
Yeah the colors are nice, if you get this mood in 3d that could be excellent !
Adding details to the characters and you'll get a awesome piece...

Good luck to you

03 March 2005, 01:22 AM
super cool. like the big smile and the happy allover athmosphere a lot! keep it up mate!

03 March 2005, 05:39 AM (

thanks for all the replies, just some more progress, i think ive about finished him and im going to move onto the critters, and that should be enough for my concept

03 March 2005, 08:48 AM (

i realised the propoortions were pretty off so i decided to fix them.

03 March 2005, 05:55 PM
Very good concept!!
Best of luck!!

03 March 2005, 05:59 PM
Wow great concept and sketch. I will keep a watch on this. Keep it up.

03 March 2005, 07:09 PM
Very good concept and comical, should be a blast to model. Good luck!

03 March 2005, 03:00 PM (

Thanks, a bit slow progress, but this is all ive managed to do today, hopefully ill get it completed reasonably soon.

03 March 2005, 07:49 PM
Somebody's thinking....Full of opportunity to convey emotions this one:thumbsup:
Looks like you're almost ready to start thinking about where this is going on (environment) and when transferred into 3d I think a slightly lower camera angle, looking up at the big fella, will add to the mood of the poor underdwellers.
Keep up the great work!

03 March 2005, 08:05 PM
Very cute!

Just can't help thinking that he reminds of a buddhist symbol!

03 March 2005, 08:12 PM
I like your use of color. Very bright and cheerfull. Are you going to use this same color scheme in your 3D version as well?

03 March 2005, 06:23 AM (

thanks, i am going to try and retain the current colours in he 3d version. pretty much finished, although i might touch up a few areas. ill start working on some character sheets next.

03 March 2005, 07:25 AM
Nice and good drawing for a nice concept too :)

03 March 2005, 02:38 PM (

this is where im at after a few hours of modelling, the back and top of the torso are very rough and should improve a lot as i add to the character.
the bottom sillouhette is the quick character sheet i drew up, going for realistic looking but with accentuated features. any c&c is welcome

04 April 2005, 03:15 PM
Looking like a solid mesh allright. Are you just going to cut more and more edges into it or are you also going to use ZBrush.

04 April 2005, 02:12 PM (

thanks for the reply,
i dont have zbrush yet so at this stage ill just be cutting into it for detail. a smallish update, still got work to do on the toes (a bit flat) but so far im pretty plaesed with it.

EDIT: sorry about the quality of the wireframe, my attempt to use an ovarlay failed, so there are quite a few missing polys in the mesh

04 April 2005, 10:55 AM (

Just a bit more work on the feet and a much more completed back.

04 April 2005, 01:08 PM
very good modelling, you've got a good grasp on the proportions.

the toes look a bit square, but otherwise nice progress so far

04 April 2005, 02:22 PM
Hey conundrum that's a nice progress, cool to see you get into modeling, keep coming, nothing to crit for the moment

04 April 2005, 05:39 PM
hey! nice process! very good,my friend, models are flawless! ,and i had a question, did u do use nurbs or poly?how did u started the modelling, thats very neat!
keep it up! good luck...

04 April 2005, 03:56 PM
Hi Kieran,
Quite a shock when I clicked through to your feed. Suddenly had great big buttocks in view. :) Like what you're doing good to see those concept sketches getting fleshed out into 3D and what lovely flesh it is too. Cheers Sean

04 April 2005, 12:11 PM
Still looking good.

04 April 2005, 10:59 AM (

Thanks for the replies
Madlight_1988: i use box (cylinders and half spheres for bodies) for large areas, but when im doing detail i use what i think is patch modelling (im not sure).

A pretty small update, just the hands. not much detail on them, rather than model it in i may use displacement if i can figure it out. im fairly pleased with them, they're certainly the most structural sound hands ive ever built. hopefully i can pick up the pace when i finish school for the term.

04 April 2005, 11:11 AM
i m modeling a fat guy too

good luck

04 April 2005, 11:33 AM
Hi again Kieran, the big fella's off to a good start, have you got a plan for posing him?

04 April 2005, 11:46 AM
thanks, i think i'll try rigging him, but i'm pretty poor in that department so i may end up having to put him in position manually.

04 April 2005, 03:13 PM
hmm, nice fat creature! thanx for explanation! ur using max, nuh?
good luck, will look forward to see more!

04 April 2005, 03:16 PM
i forget to say this, the nipples are somehow weird, they coud be really fat! u can do it!

04 April 2005, 04:13 PM
Found your entry today and i think you got the happy mood that you're looking for :)
Love the idea, one of the most original in this challenge
Now go back to modeling, i have to see one of those pink beings!

04 April 2005, 04:56 PM
Nice, you're in the good way conundrum !

Just 2 little things, i agree with Madlight_1988 about the nipples, make it more bigger...and the hands, why not making them bigger also...these 2 stuffs could improve a lot the character of the fellas...hope you see what i mean, keep it up man

04 April 2005, 03:17 AM
Very nice modeling. Good work

04 April 2005, 10:15 AM
thanks for the compliments,
madlight: im using lightwave and i will try and fix the nipples
cipher: i'll certainly play around with the proportions to see what works best

04 April 2005, 11:43 AM
thanks, i think i'll try rigging him, but i'm pretty poor in that department so i may end up having to put him in position manually.

There's lotsa quick shortcuts out there mate, which app you using?

04 April 2005, 12:20 PM
im using lightwave, im sure there are some auto rigers around but i havn't really looked into it yet so i can't be certain

04 April 2005, 03:39 PM (

the start of the face, im using a baby as a refence but trying to tweak it so it appears older. a lot of work left to go, but im fairly happy with it so far.

a viewport capture,

04 April 2005, 07:20 PM
Wow, this is very nice modeling. Great work!!! I love it. You really got the face, I'm making one rigth now and I'm taking notes :thumbsup::thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 06:41 AM (

ive just joined the head and body, ive still got to do the ears though. i'm pretty unhappy with the folds of skin around the chin and neck so ill keep tweking them.

04 April 2005, 09:24 AM
hmm, conundrum, the head is lookin great, but the joint! this head dosnt fit that body,im thinkin of this that how would it be fit to the body, mayb moving it a little to front, and then have some bumps and additional stuff at the back of his head, try diffrent types,u'll be successful!
keep up the very neat models, and good luck mate!

04 April 2005, 11:43 AM (

yeah, there certainly is a lot wrong with the join, this is my attempt to improve it, still a lot to do but i think its gotten slightly better

04 April 2005, 11:58 AM
Yes,its looking much better, but u must tweak more!it needs more attention,

The head is a little BIG,for this body.if u ur self look at it,u'll find out too!
great,u can do it! so come on!

04 April 2005, 03:20 PM (

thanks for the continued help madlight
ive played around with it for a while and im beginning to get it to a decent level. i may start working on some clothes tommorow and keep tweaking it.

04 April 2005, 03:45 PM
Very cool progress mate. I agree with the bit too large head. maybe also try to scaledown the eyearea including the nose. thats a trick to let appear things bigger, cuz eyes aere a referencesize in relation to the head. keep it up mate, loveley progress!

04 April 2005, 02:40 AM (

i've just been playing around with the concept, and ive added a bit to make the image have more purpose. effectively the shipwreked captain believes he is the master of all the little natives but in actual fact he is about to be sacrificed by them. i will have to play around with the comp a bit later on so it comes across properly.

04 April 2005, 02:43 AM
thanks for the reply first angel, i'll keep trying to improve the proportions, ive taken your advice and made the eyes and nose a bit smaller.

04 April 2005, 12:24 PM (

trying out some admiral/sailor clothes, hopefull ill be able to make them ragged by using some transparancy maps later on.

04 April 2005, 12:44 PM
hey hey! the body is looking perfect! really suitable for that body! and great clothing!hmm,in the concept eketch it seems that he's not wearing shoes, will he wear shoes?or not?i think having no shoes is tosomehow weird and having shoes helps the mood, and is more close to "Master and Servant"..u gt what im sayin?

Good luck,and keep it up,Conundrum!

04 April 2005, 12:47 PM
Nice start on clothes! Just keep it detailed. Good work!

04 April 2005, 01:37 PM
thanks, i may only put one shoe on to keep up with the shipwrecked look

04 April 2005, 03:29 PM
Hey conundrum the body is really cool, he begins to have a great look !

The only thing that bother me for the moment is his facial expression, in my opinion it doesn't look very natural, maybe with teeth more closer (like the sketch) it could be better...but maybe it's still a wip and your gonna change it..??

Anyway, it's a gOOd work buddy, keep updating

04 April 2005, 04:11 PM
hmm, having one shoe. Can be gr8! go on,keep up the very nice modelling session! waitin for more!

04 April 2005, 12:58 AM
yes, your concept is interesting and modelling is great too! and nice render!

04 April 2005, 01:03 AM
Glad I found your thread kieran.......I like your efforts here......This guy is quite a fun creation............The one boot idea would work best with the shipwreked theme...Just create chaos and that tattered look as move on,rips and splits in the clothes......some decorations hanging loose.......

Ok doing a real nice job here Kieran......I'll be looking for more.....

04 April 2005, 06:42 PM
Huh, great story and model.

My thread (

04 April 2005, 07:43 PM
Hey excellent work, you really have an excellent concept here! The guy sporting the sailor clothes has a lot of life. Keep up the good work.

04 April 2005, 02:10 PM (

Thanks a lot for all the replies, havn't had much progress recently so i decided that i'd leave the model pretty much as is and add on anything else at a later stage. to take a break from modelling i tried to get a skin shader going. its my forarts attempt at one so its not great but hopefully it will improve. i think i'll start the servants quite soon.

04 April 2005, 05:53 PM
Hi Conundrum, long time no see! no update! so.

this shader looks good, but can be much more better,i know u'll improve it aswell!

04 April 2005, 07:56 PM
Looks good. Should be interesting
Good luck:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 09:19 PM
Looks unique, i like it. Very nice shader/modelling, keep it up!

04 April 2005, 08:50 AM
Hi there. How are things going.I really like your concept sketch,so joyfoul.
Otherwise dont like pink color atall, but this is a good way to use it.
keep thoose nice thing going..

04 April 2005, 03:39 PM (

thanks for all the replies, i'm going to be rendering it in xsi so hopefully the shader should improve (once i learn enough about the render tree)

i'll use a transparancy and textures to get the ragged look. This is the posing i've done so far, just the right arm to finish, right now he looks a little too evil and not enough happy so i'll mess around with his smile, then it'll be done (although i'm sure ill do some tweaking, and maybe a normal map). soon i'll start on the servants.

04 April 2005, 04:58 PM
hmm.lookin good so far!

04 April 2005, 08:37 PM
Well done all round Kieran:thumbsup: I think you really nailed his expression and pose, I'd play with his smile but I think you got it already...Are you gonna rip his clothes up a little?

04 April 2005, 03:40 AM
thanks, yeah, i'll make his clothes look ripped using some transparency maps, although i might also make some uneven and ragged edges in the mesh too

04 April 2005, 02:47 PM (

just some more progress on his pose, i'll do the hand once ive put the critter in there. i'll start modelling the servants now though, and if time permits do a normal map for him later

04 April 2005, 09:32 AM (

just started modelling the servant's base, i still need to add some definition to make them look bonier. also the face, which i'm going to try and make easily deformable so they can have a vaiety of expressions. lots of work to do

04 April 2005, 11:28 AM
hey conundrum,ur comin along very nice! keep it updated!
am lookin back for more.

05 May 2005, 11:56 AM (

thanks for the support madlight,
this is the continued model of the servant. i'm hoping to post some facial expressions and a wire soon

05 May 2005, 12:29 PM
Nice going,,I just wonder how u going to make the final visualisation,,,from sketch to 3d,cos the sketch is so good
keep it up mate..

05 May 2005, 01:42 PM
Hey nice progress conundrum, i like your master now, good work on the pose, can't wait for textures !

Servant body is coming nicely, nice modeling so far, i keep an eye on the wip

05 May 2005, 02:43 PM (

thanks for the comments, hopefully i can get the feeling of the concept into my final piece. not much time left so i'm trying to work pretty quickly.
just a few quick expression tests to see how i'll go when i have them all posed.

05 May 2005, 02:49 PM
nice model! but what happen with his nose? it look strange but maybe stylize , so keep going! time is running out ! good luck mate!

05 May 2005, 03:24 PM (

thanks monsit, yeah the nose is a bit wierd so i gave it a more piggy look.
i've added two servants into the scene, i think i'll end up with about 6-8 carrying him and others around.

05 May 2005, 03:15 PM (

just some more posing of servants, iv'e still got a few more to do, then i'll start texturing it and adding some background. hopefully i can finish

05 May 2005, 09:31 PM
Hi Kieran, it's looking great mate! Keep it coming, we're nearly there...
My only suggestion would be to convey more of a sense of strain on the servats arms and backs.. Good luck with it all:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 12:58 PM (

thanks daddymack, i'll try to put some more definition into them time permitting, i just need to pose the leader in front and thats it for modelling and posing (they're all uv unwrapped as well). am i better to texture or do the lighting first?

05 May 2005, 01:41 PM (

this is the final of the characters, i\'m going to move onto textures and then the background. hopefully i\'ll manage to finish (it\'ll be close)

05 May 2005, 02:36 PM
Go Go Go mate! Noeat nosleep, just finish it please! It's funny and ironic! Like those piggy nosed characters! Try to do more...i know it's not easy but your image worth it. :wip:

05 May 2005, 08:43 AM (

a skin test for the master (xsi), i'll use a similar shader network for the servants and try to get some nice cloth going for clothes. this will have to pretty much do, i might try and get the sss a bit more red. it'll be a hard slog to finish but hopefully i can manage.

05 May 2005, 02:01 PM
Go Kieran, push it mate, you've got a great concept going here;)

05 May 2005, 03:41 PM (

Thanks a lot daddymack,
some more progress on the texturing, i've decided that i need to go for a non realistic cartoony look if i want to make the deadline. also, because i'm rendering in xsi and have only just started using it in the past few days its a bit slow progress. still lots to mess around with, and some lighting issues.

05 May 2005, 08:54 PM
Kieran, listen to robert he's right the concept is great, drink lots of coffee and finish this one.

05 May 2005, 05:26 AM (

thanks alot artulik,
more work on refining the shaders and finishing the boot etc. to make sure i can keep up with time i'm going to move onto the background and come back to refine any specific textures later.

05 May 2005, 02:51 PM (

some work on the background, the ground (some leaves and stones, plus a bit more variation) needs lots of attention and obviously the volcano is still to come. i changed the colour of his coat and hat because the blue mad it too messy (there are probably too many different colours as it is).

05 May 2005, 03:37 PM (

I've been really busy trying to finish this so i'm going to do a dump tonught and finsh up. This my depth render, seeing as i only had two lights a scene and and extra point this displays it pretty well.

05 May 2005, 03:44 PM (

This is the clean render of the final, i had a lot to fix in post as there were quite a few problems.

05 May 2005, 03:48 PM (

This is my post editing, i changed moved a lot around and altered a lot of the colours. Rendering in Tiff passes made it really easy to sort out though.

05 May 2005, 03:54 PM (

The final is the same as my post effects as i need to finish tonight.

To explain the premise of the entry: The shipwrecked Sea Captain believes he is the master of these little natives, and that they are doing his bidding. What he fails to realise is that they are actually intending is too sacrifice him in their volcano.

Hopefully that came accross reasonably well in the final (Not as well as i'd intended though

Thanks a lot to everyone who gave me critique and support during the competition (especially Daddymack and Madlight), it really was a great help.

Finally, good luck to everyone else, there are some very nice entries.

05 May 2005, 03:56 PM
Lol! First time I see this one - and I love it! Very funny style and the colors really rocks. Congrats and good luck!

05 May 2005, 10:25 AM (

Thanks Gunilla, good luck to you too,

I came home and found there were a few hours left so i have made some alterations. i'm happier with the focus of the image now as the lights and darks are more contrasting, which makes the master and servants stand out more.

thanks once again to all who helped me.

05 May 2005, 02:01 PM
Hey Kieran, Congratulations mate:thumbsup: You made it! I really like the whole cartoon finish you went for.. This is a funny piece... and I really enjoyed the process, and our comradery;)

05 May 2005, 08:32 PM
nyahahaha... reminds of gullivers travel bro... good job!

05 May 2005, 03:13 PM
hey conundrum,thats a great image...congratss.mate!

05 May 2005, 02:35 PM
thanks for the comments daddymack, arkinet and madlight,
in hindsight i'm quite dissapointed that the background turned out pretty bad, because i was fairly pleased with the characters. i guess next time round i need to divide my time bit better. still, it was certainly a big improvement on my previous efforts

05 May 2005, 01:34 PM
its great image ....good luck:....
