Hi there, I'm pretty much participating in this, not as a means to win, but as a way of forcing myself to practice

im only 16, so i dont know what the hell i'd do with anything i win in the forst place :)

My first Idea is that a noblewoman (time period not selected yet)
is unhappy with her marriage (probably arranged) and her only solace is to go out and play with her birds, yet she still holds as their master, as they always return to her hand

03-22-2005, 06:55 PM
wow, thanks :)

im not sure if i will even finish this to be honest, im planning to do it in photoshop, but i hardly ever use it

03-22-2005, 06:59 PM
well use this challenge to perfect ur drawing and photoshop skills, don't be intimidated.

03-22-2005, 07:09 PM
yeah, exactly my idea :)

I'm thinking of maybe going for something more whimsical and maybe cartoony, after seeing duddlebug's thread

03-22-2005, 07:30 PM (

well, the obvious next step in the design process is A HOVER CAMEL!

sorry for double postage _

03-22-2005, 07:32 PM

This will give you great experience in learning from others anf developing your own ability. Events like this will teach you a lot.

Keep your eyes open and your pencil sharpened.

Good luck

Going back to the first concept, i'd need a decent hand position for the hawk/falcon to be leaving from

sooo... heres an idea for it

03-23-2005, 12:03 PM (

just trying to get a vague impression of the expression i want on the lady's face

im still not sure if i like this idea though

03-23-2005, 12:15 PM (

a simple idea, but im hoping to put a twist in somewhere, just a girl and a bird in a cage

03-26-2005, 12:28 AM (

I really like this idea :)
I have always wanted to be able to paint relistic water, and i figure with refs, this is the best way to learn,
it also lets me play around with the moon and clouds too

plus, i can convey a human aspect, without any detailed figure drawing :)

this picture is shrunked, to convey the feeling tat i have added detail, ill double post in a sec and give you the full sized sketch, and the event file (done in opencanvas)

03-26-2005, 12:30 AM
as promised, the larger pic
and here ( is the .wpe

03-26-2005, 12:51 AM
cool idea dude:thumbsup:

03-26-2005, 01:06 AM
thanks squibbit, man, i wish that this had been the GSO

Grand Space Opera is so much easier to interpret :(
master and servant is pretty hard to get around a figure drawing block, though i managed it :)

i think i'll have some small figures in the boat though, and maybe a human shaped wave?

awesome cloud tutorial (

03-26-2005, 11:30 AM
heh, i had seen that before, but that was way before i got my tablet, i had lost it since :)
thanks a lot *bookmark'd*

03-26-2005, 11:45 AM (

I'm liking this idea more and more each minute :)

this is kind of a concept composition, with the leaves at the front there to show off lighting and positioning and stuff, but also to show that they're getting close to land, but may not make it anyway. kind of to show the futility of resisting their master (the sea)

03-26-2005, 06:13 PM
great,u have allota ideas flowing, nows the time to start finalising where it is u want to go.

03-27-2005, 08:24 PM
thanks NOOB! :) i was thinking of having this ( kind of boat weathering the storm

i have a bunch of sea references, and this ( is the kind of effect i want to achieve

and of course, using Stahlberg's cloud tutorial will help me :)

03-27-2005, 08:27 PM
yeh thats quite a popular tutorial, hope u can pull it off

gud luck!

03-27-2005, 08:57 PM
good concept...just make sure to try to tie the sky to the ocean from the start...that'll make your job much easier as u go along...remember that since water is of course reflective, it should take on the color of the you're gonna need either more blue or more purple! :-)

Craig Mullins also has a few really good stormy sea pieces on his site.

03-28-2005, 11:19 AM (

here's one colour test, this is a basic colour thingy, trying out the blending, testing a technique i invented, and things of that nature

03-28-2005, 11:32 AM (

please ignore the clouds and moon in these last 2 pieces... and the boat

i have just either improved or messed up the 1st colouring test, but i saved them differently, cause im not sure :(

looks more like snowy mountains than waves,i suggest maybe getting sum reference?

03-31-2005, 03:12 PM
i agee with NOOB, i thought those were mountains, add datk green, stormy wawes are usualy dark, work it !

03-31-2005, 03:27 PM
heh, thanks, i wasnt sure whether it was good at all really.

i got a bit carried away with the white i guess

thanks for the hint about the green
i will work that in somewhere :)

Hi el-rodente!
I really like your idea, it's an original one, but maybe I'd suggest to change the point of view in your composition, because right now the ship is too far away and that makes it difficult for the viewer to put himself in the place of the sailors, we are seeing the image from god-view, and imo it doesn't convey much emotions that way...
I like the idea of the leaves...
anyway, good luck for the challenge!
