Benita Winckler has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: lovecats (

final final final :-)

i just noticed that i have not inserted a final text describing the image.. i was in such a haste to get this all done..

ok.. here it is:

the picture is about a fragile, lonely girl who creates her own loving companions.. i liked to play with the word "willow-catkin" and so that is the material she uses to create her kittens..

i also liked the idea of having cats as loving servants because cats are so special in their behaviour.. they cant be controlled and dominated like dogs.. they come to you only if they want to.. they decide who their master is.. the kitties in the picture have the whole forrest in front of them.. yet they decide to stay close to her..

03 March 2005, 11:07 AM
welcome on this new challenge, good luck

03 March 2005, 12:28 PM
thank you for the nice welcome :).
this is my first challenge.... and there are so many good artists around here.
but im sure it will be fun!

good luck to you all!

03 March 2005, 09:14 AM
This is my first challenge as well, luck to you and I for that matter!

03 March 2005, 03:12 PM here`s a first sketch..
i`m thinking of a magical fairylike girl deep in the winterwoods.. she`s lonely and so she carves some creatures out of stones to accompany her..

i don`t know.. maybe there will be something in the look of the girl that will tell us more about the relationship between them..

to catch the mood for the background i used a section of a foto with a forest.. (which i will repaint clompletely..)

that`s all for now.. thanks for looking!:)

03 March 2005, 10:26 PM
i did some studies for the girl.. since i`m not that good in anatomy, it will take me awhile to get it right.. :)

and i`m a little unhappy with the background.. too empty... boring...

Ad lucem
03 March 2005, 10:51 PM
Nice sketch!
But I think that the emptiness of the background shows just how lonely she feels.
Just a thought.
Keep posting!

03 March 2005, 11:31 PM
Hi. I must agree that the emptiness does feed into her being lonely. Maybe you should make the forest dead to go more into the emotion of why your character is all alone....I love the idea of her carving up her own entertainment....Maybe as she carves them they slowly come to life...Just a thought.... Good Luck :)

03 March 2005, 11:33 PM
I just happen to live in a wooded area....if you need some reference I'll be glad to send you some.

03 March 2005, 11:57 PM
thanks for the comments :) they are most welcome!

"Maybe as she carves them they slowly come to life.."

just now i`m drawing some life into the little ones.. ;-)
and yes, some reference-material would be nice - i found some pics with google.. but one can not have enough!

03 March 2005, 12:18 AM
This is looking pretty good keep up the good work and keep posting. I love the atmosphere of your piece. good hustle.

03 March 2005, 01:24 AM
Pretty image so far! I like the shadowing and the muted colors, it's got a real sense of mood to it. I also like the idea of carvings coming to life, as it givs her something to be the master of.

Don't forget to officially submit your images through the Challenge's 'Submit Entry' page, otherwise they won't count towards your milestones, which would, of course, not be good!

Good luck!

03 March 2005, 01:46 AM
Heres a simple image...hope this can help in anyway :)

03 March 2005, 02:11 AM (

the first sketch..

03 March 2005, 02:13 AM (

the first sketch..

03 March 2005, 02:18 AM (

lineart..(not really)

03 March 2005, 03:41 AM
I love your approach to the theme, and the colors set the mood quite right. She kinda looks like Sandra Bullock (just a thought). Good job!

03 March 2005, 12:55 PM
yes, i forgot to submit my pics... thanks mike!:) i hope its not a problem that i dont do lineart..
well, sometimes i do.. but most times i just start with some colors (and nice music in the background) and reference material that inspires me..

once again: thanks for the comments! this is fun! :-)

@rhenia did you send the picture to my email-adress? i didnt get it.. where can i look for it?

03 March 2005, 05:55 PM
I was having a lil trouble yesterday trying to place a url link.....but I will e-mail it now :) Hope it helps....

03 March 2005, 07:18 PM (

i added the little creatures.. first i had different types of animals.. then i decided that it would look too much like a zoo, so i stayed with the catlike little-ones..

03 March 2005, 08:47 PM
Benita, your image is going to be awesome, reallly nice work.

03 March 2005, 08:56 PM
hei dunklegold, ur compo seems pretty interesting there, will be waiting for ur next version,

03 March 2005, 10:31 PM
i really like the way you made up your picture^^ all with colors and shapes! and this is so cute :p

03 March 2005, 10:56 PM
thanks again for the nice comments!:bounce: really love this challenge!
in the moment i cant stop drawing..

good luck to all of you!!

03 March 2005, 11:10 PM
cool how those clouds of colors puff into creatures :)

and very nice work , the forest looks enchanting already

03 March 2005, 11:53 PM
Hi there :)...........I have one question: Is she carving the creatures to life or is she simply petting it and then they come to life???? If she is carving them out, what tool is she using??

03 March 2005, 02:05 PM
This looks to be a sweet image .. will be nice to watch the progress of this :)

03 March 2005, 02:15 PM (

added some tools for the carving and some crude stone-forms.. i think the composition is nearly finished now..
so i can start with the details and the real coloring...

03 March 2005, 02:27 PM
this is my first wip-thread and its really nice to get all your feedback! thanks! ill keep posting! :)

03 March 2005, 02:52 PM
Nice start. I like the concept. I can't wait to see it finished.

03 March 2005, 02:54 PM
Nice concept, it works well.

03 March 2005, 03:01 PM

her legs are so beautifully rendered. I think they're excellent!!!

03 March 2005, 04:33 PM
very nice concept, so romantic. The begin of color is good, with a beautiful ambiance, i wait the suite

03 March 2005, 05:40 PM
I like your composition and color scheme. The idea you have choosen is very interesting and the little cat-like creatures are very cute. I like the girl's pose, and her face shows just how much concentration and care she puts into the creatures' creation. Wonderful work, can't wait for more!

03 March 2005, 05:47 PM
if i may suggest , i'd change the kitty in her hands so it would
yet be half stone block , i think it would help convey the idea better

03 March 2005, 09:20 PM
hey, nice and lovely story...and also the tone of color too, it's go along together with your story very well!!! Go on!!! and good luck :)

03 March 2005, 09:34 PM
I like the idea a lot but I think some people are getting a little confused on whether she's petting or creating the creatures. When I first saw it I thought she was just caressing them but as I read I understood what was going on. Maybe a way to clear this up would be to have the one she's still working on have half its body still in block form.

It's just a suggestion and I think this is coming along well. Keep up the good work.

03 March 2005, 09:37 PM
this is very beautiful! I love her pose and the colors are very smooth and calming. n___n

best of luck!!

03 March 2005, 10:37 PM (

..working on the hands... i think i will make one block in front of her half cat half block, on the other block ill draw some carved outlines..
i dont want to destroy her hands by putting a knife into them... i like this gentle pose.. arrrglll!!! hope the idea works anyway.. ill see tomorrow ;-)
thanks again for the comments! good night!

03 March 2005, 02:33 AM
I love the concept and it so far your image is looking great! Do you intend on keeping the image's colors muted? Good luck!

03 March 2005, 07:15 AM
I like this one alot. Very peaceful. Keep it up.

03 March 2005, 06:01 AM
I really love this piece and I cannot fathom how you just turn a milkshake of color into a woman. Brilliant. ButIm having trouble finding the theme here; which one is the master and which one is the servant? And how is the slave serving the master?

I see this more as a creator/creation piece than as master and servant. Just an honest crit, my friend. Good luck!

03 March 2005, 09:59 AM
i have some reference shots for the posture and use a mirror for the right anatomy, lights and shadows.. :)

master and servant.. yeah..right... thats a problem... i was thinking about putting some collars around their necks... with tiny little bells or something... even if this is a bit too much of a cliche: "...hey, these are the servants! look at their collars!.."

i dont know.. i had this other idea (even more of a cliche...) with lots of mice sitting in trees.. so obviously the cats would serve their master by catching them away..
but why would it be that she had to carve the cats first? im stuck...

and anyway wheres the snow.. and why is she naked? maybe ill throw this away and make a new one..

03 March 2005, 10:05 AM (

little bit unhappy.. maybe ill make a new one..

03 March 2005, 07:14 PM
great work. i like this one alot.

good luck!

03 March 2005, 07:22 PM
I wish I'd thought of this...hell, not just for an entry here, but at all. =) And I really like the new little mouse too!

03 March 2005, 07:30 PM
Nooooo! Dont throw this one away! Maybe the kittens could be protecting her from something; maybe the woman could be chained up with a king and queen in the background and their spoiled little child demanding the kittens; maybe a dog-thing could be ordering her to make kittens as a tasty delicacy! I dont know but geez, I love this one! You can make it work. Hey, maybe the mice are armed and never know.

03 March 2005, 10:52 PM
@all: thank you so much for your thoughts and comments!! :) this is fun!!:bounce:good luck to you all!

@john: i decided to give it another try... :) maybe the mice are dangerous... and a real threat to the forrest.. as a matter of course one needs a solution.. thats why she makes the special-purple-power-kittens.. to scare them away.. not to eat them.. (she wants no killing in the woods...) and so on.. ;-)

03 March 2005, 10:54 PM (

working on face and hands...

03 March 2005, 11:00 PM
ok.. working on the face.. its not ready yet but i wanted to post the "ugly" steps too :-)

03 March 2005, 11:10 PM
.. here is the head that i used for reference... its a photo from a video-camera...dont wonder about the bad quality.. ;-)

03 March 2005, 11:12 PM
Hiya, I didn't checked this one before and I didn't read al posts in here so maybe I suggest something that allready has been said. First of all, I really like your concept and your sketches look great:thumbsup: If the mice would be the threat to the forest, they should look evil or scary at least to emphasise that they could do some real harm, right now the mouse looks really cute and harmless. Maybe have a kitten making itself bigger in front of the mice like cats do when they feel threatened.
These are just some toughts, keep it up, looking forward to see an update

03 March 2005, 12:31 AM
Sooooo beatifull. My suggestions: the image is great but still it would be nice to see something going down from above to fill in the area and add dynamics, we are all here to share ideas and help each other, right ;)

03 March 2005, 02:26 PM (

working on the hair.. still unhappy with the concept..

03 March 2005, 08:28 PM (

no mice...

03 March 2005, 08:28 PM
thats looking brilliant!

03 March 2005, 08:44 PM
i will keep the kitties.. and stick to the first concept:

a lonely girl in an empty forrest. nobody around.. sad mood...
no leaves... no animals... no hope?
but that girl has a magical talent and a strong will, so she carves her own companions to serve her..

some work is coming up.. hurry.. hurry... :)

03 March 2005, 08:45 PM
and im very glad that you like it so far!! :-) thanks!

03 March 2005, 09:48 PM (

working on the background.. changed the colors..

04 April 2005, 12:05 AM
Dunkelgold: I wouldn't add anything to the concept, it fine as it is. Maybe I would have one of the kitties "broken" so as to show that after all she has control over them, but no other new elements. As for the coloring, it looks quite impressing, and I know that with eyelashes she'll look even better. The latest color scheme looks very artistically mature to me, the desaturated moody colors...

04 April 2005, 12:32 AM
This is really looking good! I especially like the pose of the woman... captures here mild lonliness very well, almost as if she's mindful of nothing else but making her kittens (unless I'm reading too much into it, ha ha)

Keep up the awesome work. can't wait to see more!

my 2D entry:

04 April 2005, 01:01 AM
@all: thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts with me!
with all these threads going on.. its a wonder that someone actually finds the time to draw!
as for me: i have to look up every 5th word or so in the online dictionary... that makes it quite a fulltime job to look around.. ;-)

gerardo: :) i see what you mean... control.... its really difficult.. they should serve her by loving her.. and so she would have the control.. ill think about it..

klimenko: yes.. the upper part of the image.. still no idea what to put there.. and since the mice have been thrown out.. maybe some more treetrunks.. fading in the distance.. or ominous fog? maybe ill move the whole picture a bit..

artjunkie: :-) thanks for your comment! i struggled a lot to get that pose right...

i dont know your local time but here in berlin its 3:00 oclock, the moon already went to bed.. and so will i..
have a good night/day!

04 April 2005, 02:15 AM
This has such a hauntingly beautiful concept behind it, and you're really letting that come thorugh with the poses and the colors.

It's a smidgin hard to tell at first that she's carving them--maybe she should have a tool in her hand?--but I'm sure that'll clear up as you go.

04 April 2005, 06:22 AM
Beautiful, but a bit flat right now, but its still early so im guessing youll work on that l8r.

Veryvery pleasant.

04 April 2005, 10:35 AM
Imriela: the carving-thing... i was thinking... maybe she would only pet the one in her hands.. a stone-cat.. and after this magical treatment it would come to life :-)
that would spare me the rework of her left hand... :D

e.t.: always my greatest challenge: getting rid of flatness.. thanks for pointing that out. ill keep an eye on the volumes..:)

04 April 2005, 11:49 AM
Awesome work Benitta! I like tha mood and the way u put details and light on the face!
I m waiting to see more...!

04 April 2005, 03:17 PM
chris, thanks for the nice comment! the next update is coming soon :)
@all: happy pixeling! :bounce:

04 April 2005, 04:31 PM
 Oh, gosh, ignore what I said! Don't redo the left hand--it's too beautiful! And a spell makes perfect sense; some pretty glow and voila!

04 April 2005, 04:45 PM
imriella: thanks for saying this! you saved me a lot of work!! :)

04 April 2005, 04:51 PM
This is starting to look really nice. i saw it really early on when it was just a blob of pink and a few blobs of violet... and wondered what you were gonna do next!! Interesting technique!!

The face is coming on really nicely... it's transformed as you've added detail. The hair and hands are great too.

04 April 2005, 04:55 PM
Yes, I agree with what the duddlebug fella says. I've been watching this develop, and it's like you're carving a picture out of pixels, from the splashes of colour at the beginning to where you are now... lovely! :)

04 April 2005, 05:03 PM
:bounce: wow! im so happy that you like it so far! this is so much fun!! thank you guys!! :)

04 April 2005, 06:04 PM
Nice work on this so far, I like the colors. You've gotten the girl's anatomy down quite well, and her expression is well suited.
Composition wise, the top right looks a little empty, but I imagine that you're going to add forest background there, so we'll wait and see.

04 April 2005, 06:48 PM
sidchagan: thanx! :) im going to work on that..

04 April 2005, 08:22 PM
marko, hermine: thanx for your comments! :) good luck to you!

04 April 2005, 08:34 PM
It's a nice concept and has a great atmosphere, magical yet not overpowering. The sparse background works well because you have the colours right. Keep it up, nice job.

04 April 2005, 08:49 PM
wow. very very beautifull work. just came to subscribe and wish you loadsa fun and best luck.
keep it up, looking forward to your progress

04 April 2005, 08:51 PM
hi baron, im glad you like it :) thanks for popping in!

04 April 2005, 09:00 PM
hi sacha! :) this contest is great.. i had no idea! to have so many good artists around giving feedback... its really amazing..:applause:

04 April 2005, 09:20 PM
this is looking very nice. again you amaze me with the depth of the scene. It looks very dreamy.

04 April 2005, 10:01 PM (

working on arms and body..

04 April 2005, 10:01 PM
excellent still,its really coming along!

04 April 2005, 10:10 PM
noob, beelow: :) thanx! ..hope to get the anatomy right.. the legs are going to be difficult.. ill do them tomorrow..

04 April 2005, 10:39 AM
Beautiful rendering so far! The idea is so sweet, and the thin frame of the girl makes it almost heartbreaking. Subscribing so I don't forget to check this again :)

04 April 2005, 11:29 AM
angryscientist: thanks for looking! :) i hope to have an update ready soon...

04 April 2005, 11:40 AM
your illustration is coming along very nicely. can't wait to see the finished product.

04 April 2005, 12:01 PM
keep it going dunkelgold~nice mood u have in there, just a thought, those lil kitty could be made in more color variation.i'll be looking forward to see more of urs:)

04 April 2005, 01:47 PM
 So nice!! Are you planning on adding framing objects? I think it could help bring more focus on the important parts. Also your color is excellent, I get the feeling of that your colorscheme is low on saturation, but still it reads very well.

04 April 2005, 09:20 PM
Great and Unique idea. keep on going.

04 April 2005, 12:01 AM
Hi Benita,

very cool idea and beautiful approach. The character development is great:thumbsup:

The composition of the image is very promising but maybe I would keep an eye on the format cause it is almost quadratic. Maybe I would think about going a bit more wide screen cause the whole action lies on the bottom of your picture. Im looking forward how the surrounding will develop. just my two cents

04 April 2005, 12:37 AM
@all: thanks for the encouragement! i really appreciate it! :)

redfrog: ill do my best to get it ready.. :-)

ms@zx: dont know the real colors of the kittens yet.. ill do the hardest part first: the anatomy of the girl.. shadowing and stuff... it will be fun to paint he kittens.. i cant wait to begin!

am7: i always try to stay a little bit low on the saturation.. dont want to hurt your eyes... :)
the framing objects.. yes, i thought about that.. but i think ill only do the knifes on the floor... i dont want to lead the focus away from the main composition.. maybe more little details in the surrounding.. still dont know...

pushav: :)

fahrija: i had this bad feeling that another one would notice :D.. its indeed very quadratic..i was thinking of putting some long foxgloves/fairyfingers on the right side of the picture.. thanks for mentioning that!

good luck to you all!

04 April 2005, 12:39 AM (

some more work on the girl..

04 April 2005, 01:55 AM
I love the hands. You have an interesting approach, are you just using layers and then carving out the figure from the orginal mass?

04 April 2005, 09:15 AM
dissipation: i often try to get the most difficult parts ready first (<--- hands)

layers for the cats, the girl, foreground and background.. makes it easier to change positions and colors.. i want to see the volumes first, so i mostly start with lights and shadows instead of doing real accurately defined lineart.. :)

04 April 2005, 05:24 PM (

some work on the surrounding...

04 April 2005, 05:46 PM
i like the mood of this, shes' very concentrated on what she's doing and it comes across well. the torso and nearest leg are the best parts so far, I think. its really coming together! good work Benita

Ad lucem
04 April 2005, 06:08 PM
The flowers around the girl are a nice touch and I don't think you should worry so much about the anatomy since it's working out just fine and it looks perfectly credible.
The top of the image looks perhaps a bit too empty compared to the rest.
Are going to put anything there? I think it might help your composition if you did.
Keep posting!

04 April 2005, 06:16 PM
very nice idea dunkelgold :)

I like the way u are working .... its like someones putting new and better glasses on my nose everytime i get back to this magical forest ..... it gets sharper and sharper... :)

beautiful hands

04 April 2005, 06:18 PM
Gute Idee, schne Ausarbeitung:thumbsup: . Ich kann mir nur nicht vorstellen, wie aus einem einfarbeigen Fleck so eine wunderschne Frau wurde... Da ist doch hoffentlich etwas dazwischen noch passiert:) . Gefllt mir gut! Hast du dir schon ber die Beleuchtung Gedanken gemacht?
Nice Work, love it! Great idea!

peace, pete

04 April 2005, 09:31 PM
the finished product should be excellent. :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 10:11 PM
Interesting. The tree is just a little too regular.
Good luck!

04 April 2005, 10:13 PM
thank you guys for the nice encouragement! i enjoy reading that a lot!

GhostInTheMachine: im glad you like that leg :)

Ad lucem: :bounce: i practise life drawing but its always good to hear that a pose is credible.. the background... i ll see.. but you are right.. it looks a bit empty... any idea?

Vahn: and still so much work to do.. im glad you like it so far :)

The Peteboy: you dont want to see the inbetween steps! i could post them here but its really ugly.. :arteest:the lights.. no idea so far.. im kind of chaotic in my approach to the theme..
i think ill put some spotted shadows and lights on the girl and the floor.. but on the other hand... i wanted twilight on the scene... ill try that later.. and then ill have to redo the whole thing arrrrghll .........brigens danke fr das kompliment ;-)

pushav: i hope so!:)

04 April 2005, 10:35 PM
Ke V2: oh.. im getting to that! :) i plan to redo it completely..

04 April 2005, 10:46 PM
I wish I had the courage to work the way you do... it's wonderful to see the way you work the painting, very much like its subject, carving the masses out of solid blocks. I must say, I love the subject, one very close to my heart. Your colour scheme really appeals to me too. I'm curious to know whether the kittens will be portrayed as carvings or real living things in the final thing, as each would cast a whole new light on the image.

I'd also love to know whether you used any reference for the face, because thats my favourite part so far, she is wonderfully individual, not beautiful by fashion magazine standards, but to me, is much more beautiful, in a strong sense, almost carved, like that which she does. And lovely work on the hands by the way, they are the bane of my artistic life!

04 April 2005, 11:47 PM
hi zepyhri! wow... what a nice answer... :) dont know what to say.. :)

maybe i just answer your questions:

the kittens are going to be "real" but somehow enchanted.. ill do them later.. right now i have several ideas about them... and ill simply wait till one idea is so clear that i can draw it..

i posted the reference-photo for the face here in the thread.. thought that it might interest someone..

i could make her more "beautyful".. i thought about that.. but right now...i dont want her to be a flat and empty shell.. i want her to be kind of strange.. with personality.. a little bit mediaeval without much makeup..
im really really glad that you like her... :) thanks a lot for your comment

04 April 2005, 03:01 PM
Welcome to the challenge. Nice work. I love the colors you've chosen. Good Luck to you.

04 April 2005, 03:38 PM
u have a great concept, and a superb colouring technique:thumbsup: like a lot!!

04 April 2005, 04:40 PM
It's looking nice! I see you've refines even more of her skin tones and taken out some of the extraneous cats. I like the addition of the flowers, but then, I liked the image without them because it felt more desolate, a place in which someone would resort to "making one's own friends," as it were... Which is exactly what she's doing. I miss the tree on the far right: I feel that it framed the image very nicely.
Anyhow, keep it going!

04 April 2005, 04:46 PM
Your progress is coming along very nicely. I think it might be a little early to mention this, but the females skin is lacking roseness. It would be nice to see some red hues in her skin to give it more life, she appears very dead looking. Other then that the composition is very nice, and very promising. Keep up the great work.

04 April 2005, 05:24 PM (

working on the background..

04 April 2005, 05:53 PM
Cameron Gardner: thanks! good luck to you too

nebezial: im glad you like it! :)

mike: thanks! i removed the flowers.. and added some little tree-trunks/branches (<--? dont know the right name... :)) to frame the image... thanks again, that was very helpful!!

AirbORn: thanks for looking with such sharp eyes! :) youre right.. she looks a bit bloodless... i will donate her some red pixels in one of the next sessions.. thanks a lot for the feedback!

04 April 2005, 08:56 PM
Hi Benita, this is a BEAUTIFUL piece. i love the concept, The mood and colour are just fantastic. I love the subject matter too, ' Girls and Cats'. I have the same subject in my M & S too.
Can't wait to see your progress.

hi Tariq12, thank you! :) (i want the sitting slavegirls for my pic!!! :))

Poshspice, i cant write the answer without laughing! this avatar!!! man, where did you find that one? oh and the cats.. i dont know right now... i think she is a magician.. one touch and things come to life :) ill add some shining purple lights on the hands...

04 April 2005, 11:47 PM
Its looking good. the trees cut and grown like that are either coppiced or pollarded [yes, i know lots of useful crap]. you could do alot with the sunlight coming through the trees going off into the woodland and add smaller trees/plants because it looks abit empty around her right now. the kittens are looking great :) and i still think the concept is cool!

04 April 2005, 11:53 PM
been watching this for a few days now i cant really understnad for the life of me why i didnt comment sooner but meh.. better late then never :D

none the less i really love the idea of creation you have going here. the colors do kind of look dull but i like them none the less.

will definatly be looking out for updates on this.

This is quite interesting. I like the idea of sculpting the kittens. Now I'm going to have to watch you and see how this one ends up. *shifty eyes*

04 April 2005, 11:57 AM
Hiya Benita, Your image is coming along nicely. The image has a mystial feel to it, May I suggest the Berry trees could start lower on each side of her and go up and around her like a frame. The trees could swirl and twist around each other creating a nice ornate design...just a though hope you dont mind :)

04 April 2005, 04:35 PM
@all: thanks for your feedback and all the nice work! sooo inspiring.. i could spend hours in this forum (well.. i do...)

GhostInTheMachine: more trees to come... :) im glad you like the sunbeams..

Slav: nice to hear from you! the dull colors.. should i increase the saturation a bit? it has been mentioned so often that im really troubled right now.. ill do some experiments on that issue and post them here..

Bishoppess of Death: then ill try to please you with some updates! ;-)

hi mark, so that comment was for me! i had to look up "squiggle" and then.. click..:)
im glad you like the berry-trees.. the idea of swirling and twisting them is very promising..thanks a lot!

04 April 2005, 10:02 PM (

light: this subject can keep you really busy.. ill never start a picture again without checking the lightsource first.. arrgll..

04 April 2005, 02:43 PM
it's very nice work, you seem to have cut the number of cats though which I feel is a pity somehow :)

04 April 2005, 02:56 PM
This image is shaping up nicely, I like your painting technique.

04 April 2005, 04:03 PM
Wow, the lighting on this just makes the picture! It makes it a darker feel, but no more sombre, if that makes any sense. I love the way it adds real depth to the whole thing, you realise instantly that she's in a forest. She looks very much an integral part of the scenery now. Of course it'll be a pain in the butt trying to adjust the lighting on her to match i you go with this set up, but I think a little tweaking here and there will do, as it doesn't look too bad as is. I really love this image, I hope you do well in the challenge.

04 April 2005, 08:04 PM
Great concept! I love the expression of her face.
The diffuse lighting makes the pic kind of mysterious. I like it.

Are you planning to bring more light into the scene? Maybe to accentuate the
focal point.

04 April 2005, 10:44 PM
flyingP: thank you! the number of kittens is not set yet.. some are still hiding in my wacom... :)

Jose: thanks! :) i hope ill finish it..

Zepyhri: i saw the lighting on your pic and thought to myself: "well well.. i have to do something.." im very very glad that you like it. :bounce:

Goro: hi! thanks for the comment. :) im still playing around with the lights.. i thought about an extra lightsource.. some candles maybe... or magical little lights in the air.. where her hands hold the stone-kitty..

04 April 2005, 11:45 PM
hey Benita, Looking Fab, I must say. I think the colours are perfect the way they are. It sets such a beautiful mystical mood. Every time I see your avatar ,I visit your thread. She has such a great look on her face.
Will be back in my travels to visit.

working on the background-colors..

04 April 2005, 07:50 PM
nice! this is really starting to come together.

hi imriela, thanks! :)

This is beautiful! I love everything about it-- concept, layout the colors so far... I'll definitely keep an eye on this thread.

04 April 2005, 08:37 PM
i am liking the background finally but still feels a bit empty...

04 April 2005, 08:38 PM
Very nice:) . What I would do as a test is to give a little yellow with very low opacinity to the light (on a sepparate layer), because I think it needs more warm colours.

04 April 2005, 08:47 PM
I really like your concept; it's truly fresh, and peaceful, and... well, kinda cute. :)
Ho, and you mentioned some sort of magical lights that you might add around the hand that holds the stone kitten. That would be great I think; an elegant and subtle way to spice up the lighting.
In any case, great work; can't wait to see it finished :D

04 April 2005, 09:20 PM
I just like this.

no crits. :)

04 April 2005, 09:24 PM
the green helps I just wouldn't over do it, I kinda liked the mood you going with the colours before anyway

04 April 2005, 01:17 AM
the green is nice. also, the yelowish touch does offer a new colorspectrum of warm reflexes, wich helps on show plasticity. i think the all over blue breaks up with that niceley, sort of adding a warm backlight. also some subtile transluscency. (so called subsurface scattering)
make sure you don't give in too muh yellow, cuz warm colors move towards the eye and would consume the mainscens, cuz yellow tones are heavy in apperance, dominant...
Hope i did write more or less understandable and this is sort of helpfull. keep up the great work, Benita!

04 April 2005, 01:32 AM
The green is a big plus, and the water surface gives the piece the depth that it needed . However, the new background color made me realize that there's something weird with her left armpit (not exatly the armpit, but you know...). I think it's because it is too concave all the way through, when it should be a little convex where the chest meets the arm .
About the kitties: i belive it would be better if they were made out of wood, cause it would be more plausible, you would have a chance to detail the material (which you're definetly good at), and it would fit better with the color scheme. Just a thought...

04 April 2005, 01:47 AM
dude or dudette, not sure!! This is looking sooo nice, when i first saw this I knew exactly what you were aiming at and loved the idea.....I think it is important to have an idea that people click onto straight away and illustrate it as such.

Really Nice,

04 April 2005, 10:12 AM
i think the new detail is looking good. try including some honeysuckle (the tree vine) in those trees in the foreground. the leaves and flowers would be ideal to catch sunlight and you can use it to add more depth as well.
looking good :)

04 April 2005, 11:32 AM
Hey, I really love your style and technics.

04 April 2005, 12:56 PM
Hi Benita,

WOw...looking really nice. I love the atmosphere on your piece and it is very mysterious. your colour shcemes are working really well. I love the small touches on details. It keeps the eyes of the viewer going and interest. I love the character. She's very enchanting, specially with the accompy of the cats. Can't wait to see more details and refinements.

Archie

04 April 2005, 01:02 PM
einar: thanks for the nice comment! :)

slav: the background.. well.. im still not sure what to put there without destroying the feeling of loneliness.. after all the girl is ment to be so lonely that she has to create her own companions out of stone or wood to serve her... if you got an idea let me know - feedback is very welcome :)

pete: hi, thanks for suggesting the yellow-layer.. i tried it with 5% opacity and i hope it works fine.. ill post the result.. let me know what you think about it.

vielen dank fuer den "Community-Preis" jetzt bin ich ganz verlegen.. :)
this is my first "big" digital painting and im glad to get your feedback! (maybe someone has already noticed the portrait of the dwarf with the flat background.. hehehe.. no! no! dont look at it! i will improve, i promise!! )

crowley: thanks! im working on the hands again.. then the magic.. :) thanks!

brian: ill post the new version in a minute (or ten) it has even more yellowish-green.. tell me what you think.. your comments are very appreciated!

sacha: thanks a lot for the comment! i was playing around with the background-colors for hours.. next result in a few minutes..

gaeasherald: the armpit.. yes i think your right.. after taking a look in the mirror.. its a little bit too concave.. not much.. but a little.. thanks for the sharp look :) and the kitten-material.. funny thing.. i thought about wood too.. because otherwise i would have to draw a hammer.. (no one could carve a kitten or anything without using a hammer i think..)

nathan: im definitivley a dudette! :) im glad you understand the idea on the first glance.. thanks a lot!

GhostInTheMachine: just visited your thread while you were visiting mine.. :) thanks! ill try some flowers and leaves but i think too much flowers could make the picture too "friendly".. after all she should be in a rather unhappy environment.. difficult thing.. more branches could look kind of boring.. so i have to draw something.. and i would like flowers more than dead leaves.. ill see... maybe ill have a sudden inspiration..

tuck: thanks!

04 April 2005, 01:05 PM
hi archie, so many nice comments here :) thanks a lot! more details to come..

04 April 2005, 01:25 PM (

ok: right now the kitty in the hand is too big.. and the raw-kittens on the floor are too small :-) but ill change that in the next update..

04 April 2005, 01:36 PM
Oh new hairstyle:)
But I liked the old hairstyle much better. It gave the whole image more space. And
I liked the shape of the head. Now it looks kinda odd to me...
I think it's also better without the accesoire on the head. I liked the natural appearance
of the woman before.

Maybe you should work on the averall lighting befor going on with the detailing.

(habe an der German Film School in Elstal (bei Berlin) studiert. Zur Zeit wohne ich in hometown Hamburg)

04 April 2005, 01:43 PM
It's looking good, Benita! The lake, which I didn't comment on earlier, really adds to the desolation of the piece. I have to comfess. I agree with Goro wholeheartedly about the hair. He said it all well, so I won't dwell on it.

One suggestion, if I may? Compositionally, I feel like the eye is getting lost in the lower left, not getting curved back around into the rest of the piece, just kind of dropping off out through that open space. You said that you still wanted to do some work on those uncarved kitty blocks.... What if you moved them (or one of them?) over to the left and flipped it horizontally (so it orients from upper left to lower right.) That way it might "chisel off" that dead corner of the image and curve the eye right back into the rest of the piece.

Anyhow, just an idea. You have things all under control anyhow. Good lcuk!

04 April 2005, 02:06 PM
Hello! I like this picture very much. The mood is very mysterious. i also like her face mimic. good work. keep it on!

04 April 2005, 02:10 PM
goro: if i dont control myself the whole image will be filled with black hair.. i got a possession with this.. ok.. maybe ill erase a littel bit of it.. a littel.. :) the fact that i love fairies that much always leads to the situation that sooner or later all woman i draw have fairy-jewellery all over.. and of course very long hair.. ill try to work on the lighting first..

wow.. filmschule elstal.. hab gerade mal im internet nachgeschaut.. cool.. *will auch* :)

mike: oh yes the dead corner.. i see.. thanks for the comment on that - very helpful :) ill try to change the position of one kitty..

04 April 2005, 02:12 PM
the_mindgamer: hi, thank you! :)

04 April 2005, 02:29 PM
I agree with Goro and walrus on the hair. There was really no need to change that, because it was beautiful. I think the background works aswell, but it needs some detail and more depht. What I would do is give the left tree (watchers left) -that is in the background- a little more contrast. Maybe make the light falling in little brighter (more yellow again ;) ) and dont forget to make the cats drop shadows!

Girl, this is getting better and better and I know its gonna be great when you finish it :) !

peace, pete

04 April 2005, 02:40 PM
hi pete! no one likes the long black hair  just kidding.. but it would be really interesting for me to know if everybody else thinks the same about it

thanks for the suggestion of the smile ill try it.. :)

ok heres the question: whats with the hair and the jewellery? away with it? or nice-nice?

04 April 2005, 02:45 PM
Ok Benita, I just doodled around a bit....
I made a quick overpaint cause I wanted to figure out what exactly was bothering me on your painting. Hope you don't mind. If you do I'll put it down right away. Just let me know.

1. As you already said...there seems to be no difined lightsource. So first you should think about where the light is coming from.

2. The focal point is also hard to find cause the contrast between those kitties
and the ground. (I know you didn't color them yet.)

3. I think you should define the focal point. Maybe with new elements in the picture.

4. I like the mysterious mood in your painting but It needs more depth I you should add more darker and brighter more contrast in the values.

Here is the overpaint to show you what I mean...
Since you said the thing with the lights flying around I thought it would be a great
lightsource. You can play around with those lights so much. (I added just one)
I'm a fan of warm colors so I made the overall skintones much warmer.
I darkened the whole enviroment cause the light from the upper left corner was taking
my eyes upwards. Now I think the focus stays on the face and the hands of the girl.
Didn't touch the kittens. They should be darkend too. Maybe also with some rimlights
to define the shape.

I hope this helps. It was just an idea I had in my head as you said the thing with the lights.

Your painting has a lot of potential so rock on!

04 April 2005, 03:16 PM
:bounce: thank you soooo much!!! :) that was just the kind of rescue i needed!!
you know, when your staring at a thing all the time you see nothing! thanks again that was helpful! away with the sunbeams! :) :bounce:

04 April 2005, 03:34 PM

nice touch that

aaaannnd have to agree liked the first hairstyle myself too......sorry :D

04 April 2005, 03:35 PM
i'd keep the trees & background as you had in the original sketches,
I so liked the peaceful, misty swampy feel of it :D

04 April 2005, 04:55 PM
Ooo, I definately liked the up-do better--I think the perched weight of it both balanced her raised hand and made for a better line. And the fire lighting was COOL!

04 April 2005, 05:21 PM
hi guys! im clompletly confused.. :) ok.. hmmm... i really love the new touch from goro.. and Squibbit: i really loved the first background too..

ill try to create a hybrid out of both things.. or something totally different.. the next update will take me a while i guess..

thanks again for your comments and thoughts! i hope youll like what ill come up with next..

(and still no one there who likes long black hair? no? anybody? :))

04 April 2005, 05:52 PM
I guess she has pretty long hair already (just rolled up):) . Goro did a great step in the warm-colour-direction, you should stick to that in my opinion. Really nice! Im looking forward to this:thumbsup: .

peace, pete

04 April 2005, 06:11 PM
hmmmm now am very curiously looking forward to your next update! warm colors... i'm sure you'll find the right ballance. hehe, hau rein ;)Keep on goin'!

04 April 2005, 06:44 PM
Wow, what a beautiful painting. I love the colours you're working with, they really create a wonderful mood, very peaceful and calm. the characters' hair is very well designed, I like how it echoes the smooth and organic forms in the background. I can't wait to see the final image. Alexi.

04 April 2005, 09:31 PM
I see the dilema you're facing, so maybe i can contribute with my little grain of sand. The overpaint that goro did was excellent, cause it defined a focal point and gave priority to the main elements, however, you don't have to stick with those precise colors if you don't feel at ease with them. The advice he gave you was aimed towards the light source not to the color scheme, so using a desaturated purple light source (for example) in the same spot would have the same overall effect, but staying consistent with your original pallette.

As for the background, I think the myst and the darker tones go perfectly together, don't you? The light beams could be radiating from the new lightsource, rather than coming from somewhere else. You could even have insects fluttering around it and projecting shadow cones (as they do in swamps like yours). I hope some of this helps :)

04 April 2005, 09:46 PM
I like her new doo. Goro's overpaint looks nice, I was thinking when looking at your current submission that it could use some more dramatic and contrasty lighting. On the side of how you've rendered her... you've done a great job.

04 April 2005, 09:52 PM
Hi dunkelgold

this last one works very well. Nice lighting idea. I subscribe to your thread right now

Keep going on

04 April 2005, 10:38 PM
hi there! in the moment i have to do some off-topic work... so i cant spend much time in here.. dont wonder.. i still want to finish the pic :) see ya..

pete: i love purple blue and green... :)

the1st_angel: :) i hope so! i have to do some "normal" work right now: designing the corporate identity of a company.. deadline on monday... arrrg! and that means: no elves and no fairies for the next days... (and no update) maybe getting a little break will help clearing my head a bit

alexi: thanks! :)

GaeasHerald: i made a few tests and i think i like the lighter image more than the darker one.. the overpainting from goro creates a different mood.. my idea was to create a scene in the early morning or early afternoon... soft misty sunlight.. almost no shadows.. a time where you could meet a fairy at a sea.. hmmm.. i understand the importance of having a focal point.. and some contrast is important too... but i can not darken the picture that much without loosing the original mood..

but all these has to wait.. until thuesday.. :)

Gamoron: yes the rendering.. unfortunately ill have to redo that completely.. but then i hope the effect will be better! cheers!

Snail: oh.. the last one was from goro! but i hope that my next update will show some improvements with the lighting.. thanks for looking! :)

04 April 2005, 11:06 PM
Hi Benita,
this is really looking COOL ! The background is really coming along. The only thing is that I prefered the hair style you originally had. As a silhouette it worked better with your composition. These are just my crazy ramblings though..
Keep up the beautiful work.

Hi Benita,

I'm with GORO and WALRUS with the hair. Don't make it long. The short one gives that mysterious eerie feeling to her. Oh and what GORO did, i like how he added that lighting. I think it unified your piece. Anyway, can't wait to see what you decide to do. Goodluck on this and goodluck on your log design gig.

04 April 2005, 09:49 AM
Very impressive so far ... keep it up

archie: :) thanks for the encouragement on the corporate id thing.. cant wait to paint again...

@all: i wish you all the best for your own work! i come visiting next thuesday :buttrock:

04 April 2005, 11:31 AM
Just wanted to let you know I've been following your wonderful entry and loving it (I haven't posted much in the way of crits, you seem to be getting good advice from others more capable than I).

Sorry, but I also like the original hair style, LOL! Oh, and I rather like the jewelry... bet it'd be great to if those jewels picked up the colour of the light source you plan to use.

Anyhoo... great artwork, nice subtle tones, especially in the bg (I agree with Squibbit on the orignial background) and a wonderful concept. You're doing an amazing job... keep it up!

04 April 2005, 11:36 AM
Hey, I really love your style and technics, so... it awsome!!!
You have such a very good skills!!!

This entry is really starting to look fantastic. I really love your idea and the colours are looking good too. I'd maybe warm up her skin on a couple areas a little (but not too much because your piece has some great mood). I wanted to say that your background vines are very nice. Keep going! can't wait to see the finished thread. Gook luck

Keep going on

04 April 2005, 11:36 PM
hey, its looking great benita! you could add some details like moths, fireflies etc. maybe a kitten could be chasing them? dunno.
your hair looks nice btw ;)

04 April 2005, 03:41 PM
looking cool :)
I like the feel of it :)

04 April 2005, 03:19 PM
Hi Benita,

I like Goro's overpaint as well because he made a light source affect the form of the girl. In your image, the light from the bacground doesn't illuminate the girl. She's illuminated by some unseen light source. I don't see anything wrong with the drawing or the hairstyle.

What I would do is try and put some influence from your existing lightsource of the background into the girl. I really like the background as you've done it. I wouldn't change it. I would try to integrate the girl more into the environment. I hope you don't mind me doing this.

I would also try to use your existing background light to illuminate the water more to bring out the form of the girls body.

The only thing that I question is how saturated the kittens are.

04 April 2005, 05:52 PM
Hi, good idea, very nice, Good Luck!

04 April 2005, 12:03 PM
hi there! back to work.. after beeing away from this image for so long it somehow died in me... hmmm.. i think ill make a new one.. the concept is already vivid in my mind...
maybe ill get back to the old one later...

@all: i want to thank you for your comments and encouragements so far.. it means a lot to me...

Sheffield: yes, that kind of mood.. not too dark.. :) this is very helpful! thanks for taking the time to do this..

Archael3: thanks and good luck to you too!

Eterna2: thank you.. cheers!

joe: im glad you like the hair.. moths and fireflies? i think they will find a perfect place in my new concept!

spacesnail: never mind! goro did a great job with the lights.. ill try to focus more on the lights in my next concept (from the beginning on) and leave this one alone for a while..
i was a little confused with all the light sources.. the background: lights from the left.. the girl: lights from the front.. and to confuse things even more: an overall wish to have a dusty morning-light with no shadows at all... arrrggg! :arteest:

birdybear: thank you for the comment! im not sure if ill finish this one in time.. anyway im glad you like it

tuck: its very nice to read this.. thank you! :)

artjunkie: thanks for following my entry! im glad that you like the original background too.. and: any comments, suggestions and crits are welcome! thanks alot!

this is the last version of concept 1..
i wanted to post it before i get to the new one... maybe ill finish this one later..

04 April 2005, 04:27 PM
Good to see you back. You got some nice add ons on the foregrounds. Personally, i still like the one with the short hair. I'll be in touch.

BTW, how did your Corporate ID gig went?

04 April 2005, 05:36 PM
this is a great entry :)
by now, I can only say that I prefer when there was blocks still to be shaped like cats in the floor. when I first saw the last image I didn`t understand the concept, which I could only get by seeing the previous ones.
are you still going to make another entry?
phew... I wish I had the time to finish mine...
well, keep it up!!

04 April 2005, 08:53 PM
Very expressive character! Um I wish I coud see her with other haircuts.. try experimenting with it, just a suggestion

04 April 2005, 09:01 PM
the new details are good... cant wait to c your new concept... i like this loads, its kinda like in a dream...

one last thought that'd work - make the kittens look more like theyr being carved outof candle wax (like carved candles) with it peeling off her knife... wish i had more than 20seconds to comment .. gl!

04 April 2005, 09:17 PM
Lovely! :D

04 April 2005, 10:10 PM
I really really like your style and your first concept, and there's no doubt I'll like the next one too. Can't wait to see it.

04 April 2005, 05:47 AM
Nice foliage. Everytime I come here the drawing gets btter and better. Keep it up.

04 April 2005, 10:52 PM (

ok.. im going to finish this one i think...

more work on the second hand.. i changed the concept a little.. shes no longer carving the kittens... but taking care of their breakfast or something... there will be creatures in the berry-bush.. i hate the idea of feeding birds to the little ones.. so maybe i paint some spiders or small tasty monsters...

04 April 2005, 11:25 PM
archie: thanks for looking.. (the corporate-id gig went fine.. :bounce:)

don diego: i wish i had the time to finish mine too ;-) thanks for your comment and good luck!

victim335: oh yes the haircut.. i think you are right... but ill leave it for now and touch it again later... first the kittens and then the background... thanks!

joe: im so glad that i can stop worrying about carving-stuff thanks to the new concept! :) hope youll like it too

lula_assassina: :) thanks!

crowley: im glad you like it so far! i hope i find some time to post more often...

pushav: thanks! (more foliage to come!)

and now its the time to sleep.. good night!

So the short hair is gone  ... :) I still dig this too. I like the changes too. The details are looking great and those small add ons. The breakfast idea is cool, but personally, i kinda like the old one. Can't wait to see more updates.

04 April 2005, 10:05 AM
very good detail on hands and the net(basket)

04 April 2005, 04:30 PM
It seems as though she will be catching the critters instead of creating change up, I think you're the master and your piece serves your creative vision quite well...

Great work Benita!

04 April 2005, 05:51 PM
I must be honest, I liked the old one better, too.

That doesnt mean that I dont like this one. I mean, Its you who has to have fun with what youre doing and if you prefer the new version, well then do that. I have no doubt, that its gonna be great anyway:thumbsup: .
Were watching:) .

peace, pete

Cameron: wow.. thanks for the nice comment! :)

@all: thanks for looking!

04 April 2005, 06:00 PM
kinda liked the first one too, although this is good, to be honest I think what really grabs me anyway is the over all atmosphere, there is something about it I really like.... it's sort of contemplative and just sort of works :D

04 April 2005, 06:03 PM

Guten Tag Benita! I really like your style of painting. So both look great to me!

My master & Servant (

04 April 2005, 10:56 PM
this is a gem!

gorgeous picture in development! love the character, and her posture. the way her head is slightly tilted, examining the net.
i will just watch where you take it from here. keep rockin man!

04 April 2005, 11:17 PM
ooh... new details! :)

04 April 2005, 12:25 AM
Impressive!!! Good job! i'll keep an eye on ya!:scream:

04 April 2005, 01:53 AM
Hi Benita.
I really loved the originality of your old concept, it was outstanding and very special. please dont flush that. :)

04 April 2005, 11:19 PM
hi. ive got another idea you wont like! ;)
your net basket reminded me of the traps used in places like rural france for catching songbirds. they r made of a strip of bark i think and noose the lil birdies legs when they land on a branch. i kno its a little macabre, but those cute kittens need to eat something:D

maybe she could be catching birds for another reason, whatever - just an idea. :)

04 April 2005, 06:27 AM
wow! this a beaut!

i like the mood of it all :)

... though i really enjoyed an earlier concept (of her carving and molding the kittens)!

I'm very interested to see the outcome, it' really gorgeous!

04 April 2005, 07:27 AM
u r getting there~nice touch for the basket, its very intricately done:)

04 April 2005, 04:39 PM
good work:thumbsup: , but I like better first concept too.

04 April 2005, 05:36 PM
I agree woth olya, I like the first concept too. The second one is good too, but I like the first. Good hustle.

04 April 2005, 05:36 PM
I honestly wish your female character could still be carving animals. I thought the idea was really great. But this is just as good. A matter of preference, I suppose!

04 April 2005, 03:59 PM
Hi benita... this is developing nicely. It seems the mass opinion is that your first concept was more preferable.. I like them equally, for different reasons. I'd say go with whichever one you feel more strongly about. Perhaps you could make the kittens slightly more fantastical, or make their food unusual on this one, to keep that mysticl magic feeling you had with original. People kept telling me my first concept was more original, but I just couldn't get my head round it, and am much happier now I've stuck with my curent theme. Either way, it'll look great when it's done. Maybe you could have a combination of the two and have a kitten coming alive in the basket (which I love and think you should keep either way), and some half-carved ones stood around, and still have their food hanging off the cherry bush, with a kitten pawing at it.

Ahem, my imagination running wild for a moment. Excuse my rambling.

04 April 2005, 07:22 PM
Hello Benita,

Your entry is outstanding. It was an enormous pleasrure to browse through each and every update you have posted (though I have to add that it did demand some time and a few visits).

There is very little to say or comment on that would be anything but my personal prefference and taste.
I sort of liked her with her hair up. She looks alot more 'Fairy Tale'ish this way. But the other was a very intresting figure.
And even though I see where you are getting at. When she was much paler in contrast to the darkness of her hair and make up, (Like she is in your avatar) she looked a dear bit more impressive. Her skin felt uch more fragile and elegant. Sensative and soft. Thus more dreamy.
Now I have to accept that her skin is much more realistic, but thicker and more worn looking.

I liked the new concept as well as the old. But at the stage it is, inspite all the hard work you have put in, it doesn't look as amazing.
The expression on her face, the gestures of her fingers.. they are literally amazing. she is gorgeous.

Well This is definately of the best from the entries for the challange. The image is so beautiful and emotional. I would love to see where you will take it from here.
Good luck!

Pretty Cool idea ! Solid drawing skills and colouring ! Nice picture endeed, but why kitties ? :)) GG! i'll keep an eye on ya

04 April 2005, 12:59 PM (

working on the kittens..

04 April 2005, 02:08 PM
im glad to read all your comments and i want to thank you for taking the time to follow my entry and sharing your thoughts with me.. it means a lot to me! :) thank you!

after being away for a while i started working on the picture again.. im still not sure which direction to take.. on the one hand is the wish to be as "realistic" as possible.. with redish skincolor and the lights in the right place.. on the other hand is the feeling that i dont want to draw a "real-world" image/scene.. but a scene from a dream or something..

my interpretation of the master and servant theme is the creation of loving companions in a lonely environment..
im still messing around with the background.. i tried some stonewalls instead of wood and trees.. ill post the sketch in a minute.. please let me know what you think.. :)

04 April 2005, 04:11 PM (

ok.. here is the new background im working on.. i like the idea of the water not reflecting the kitten.. as if she would only dream about them..

im planning to make the "outside-world" a bit more bad and dangerous.. some long and small treetrunk could reach to her and pierce her back..

there is something wrong with the perspective or the wall-shadow on her.. im trying to fix that :-) its just a first sketch..

04 April 2005, 04:22 PM
Cool. I like your theme. Personally, i prefer the old background, but this is looking good too. Just a small suggestion, i think you should just have one wall or change the one on the right side, because the composition is feeling a bit too closed up. Maybe break it like it's part of a ruined temple or structure. Can't wait to see how this turns out. I really like the mood of your piece.

04 April 2005, 04:25 PM
hi archie,
thanks for looking! ill try the wall-thing it.. :)

04 April 2005, 04:26 PM
hey hey ! Why'd you change the background ! LOl, no actually maybe this one does work better? I'm not sure...hmm...maybe have some broken peices of walls but keep the old background with just the treets, well i dont know...hard to decide, you're the artist i know you'll find a way. I'm glad u went back to the first hair style, I'm still waiting on you to refine her some more! Photorealistic colors would definatly suit this piece! Anyway keep trucking! Looking good!

04 April 2005, 04:31 PM
hi corey :) everybody seemed to love the old hairstyle.. so here it is again :)
and: more refinements to come.. thanks for looking!

04 April 2005, 04:33 PM
The conjuring idea definately gets that creator/creation master/sevant relationship across much better than any of the others, though I'm not sure I like the wall. The utter lack of civilization--and therefore human companionship--conveyed by the wild forest made a little more sense, methinks. (Or maybe I just liked those little red leaves waaaaaay too much!) Anyway: go, Benita, go!

04 April 2005, 07:04 PM
hi imriella,
i love your new avatar! :) sooo cute!
for the civilization-thing: i want to make the place lost and empty.. maybe ruins, stones and twines.. everybody is gone..

next update is coming soon i hope!

04 April 2005, 07:07 PM
Sehr schn :)

Excellent work! Very original, and so beautiful! I can't wait for the next update!

04 April 2005, 07:37 PM
Sehr nette Arbeit Kollegen

04 April 2005, 07:55 PM
hi benita. this is looking 100% better, well done. i was never quite sure about your old background but this works so much better with your character for some reason. glad to see the kitten is back!
good work, looking forward 2 more! :D

04 April 2005, 08:21 PM
Wow Benita, nice work it's really taking shape.

the kitty in the lower corner is looking really cute.

04 April 2005, 08:59 PM
stormragejunior: danke! :)

brian: hi, the little break from drawing was very helpful.. i hope one can see the new "spirit".. thanks for your encouragement! :)
joe: im very glad you like the "new style" i think im on my way now.. :arteest:

gerard: thanks for popping in :) i saw your impressive 3d entry and i wish you the best of luck! i always wanted to start learning 3d modelling but theres so little time..

04 April 2005, 09:15 PM
this is some great work that youve begun hear! I like you concept! I can tell that it is going to be a remarkable piece!

04 April 2005, 09:23 PM
i so wouldn't want so say this but I don't
see much "master and servant" in the pic.

I was baffled by that basket version , too,

I think it could do the pic good to have the
master and servant relationship a bit clearer.

This is just my opinion tho and many disagree,
but I had to say it

04 April 2005, 09:42 PM
I honestly hadn't thought the brick walls would look as good as this when I had first heard your idea.
I have to admit that it is a beautiful picture now.. but I think it is fading away from the depiction you have described a few posts back. With the latest atmosphere things looks lovely. But for some reason, the previous gave more connection to the little creations being possible servents... your call
So I am going to have to agree with Squibbit up to a point. A,d it would be a tisk for such an outstanding image. I think what makes your image impressive is the personal touch you put into it. So well you have to just see what you feel through it out.

04 April 2005, 09:49 PM
themagnetic: thank you :) i hope you are right :D

panu: thanks for your comment! its very much appreciated.. master and servant.. this theme is driving me crazy.. (forget the basket.. the idea was to let her serve the kittens by catching breakfast for them.. or something - but first i was drawing a collar in her hands with a little silverheart then it became golden and then it became a basket ) master and servant.. the other idea was to put red bows/kinks/favors/loops (<--i dont know the right word) around their necks.. any idea how to make the relationship clearer? they should serve her as companions..

04 April 2005, 09:59 PM
hi black, this picture is a hard journey for me.. and i think its not over yet.. :D ok.. master and servant.. it must be possible to get that somehow into the picture! i want her to sit there like that.. she creates the little furballs and the surrounding is miserable, sad and menacing.. maybe i could draw a whole living kitty-coat?

04 April 2005, 10:17 PM

personally I see the theme in it, I don't think you have to make it to0 blatant :)

04 April 2005, 10:18 PM
i thought a little and came up with this little
idea : She'd create these cats and she'd have
by her side on the ground this spread little piece
of cloth on which the cats would then bring anything
they'd find from the forest. On the cloth would be twigs
and roots from some plants, a ring , couple of berries,
a bird's claw , a mouse skull , a coin, piece of
a bird's egg, a glove, couple of shiny stones and a key.
The woman (she could have wristlets with engraved
cats in it and similar, feline-related jewelry and clothes),
would then use some or all these items as material
components in her spells.

04 April 2005, 10:27 PM
I like Squibbit's idea...
I'd think that would be a very fine aprouch.. it would introduce many new elements to the scene which you can draw and impress.
A tisk that it isn't as personal and poetic as what you had wanted to depict with the loneliness. Maybe it's because a servent is rarly for loneliness... a friend is there for tasks such. Very hard to get out of state here...

I didn't really understand the bit about the kitty-coat.. do you mean to fill everywhere with kitten's?
I can understand your worry of introducing the concept into this particular image. Who wouldn't? It looks beautiful!

04 April 2005, 10:43 PM
brian: ok, no kitty-coat :) (or maybe only as a last rescue-idea) im very glad you can see the theme in it by now as it is!

panu: this is a cute idea.. still a few days left.. so i think ill give it a try! thanks for lending those beloved braincells of yours to me! *my english sucks a little* :)

good night!

04 April 2005, 04:29 AM
Hi Benita!
Sorry took me a bit to check back. The essence of creating kittys is saved and i love the sparlking way you took it up again. the walls work fine, they are a great add to the scene. lol, Panu seems exactly know how to make kittys :p
Guten Start in die Woche, Keep it up!

04 April 2005, 03:53 AM
Hi Dunkelgold

I really like the neo-romantic style.
Nice painting love the girl and kinda melancholic mood to it.

My idea was more similar to Squibs tho'

OK she's playing with the kitties listening to classical harp music.
Then all of a sudden the kitty shaman pops up!
Then the shaman casts a spell and all the kitties get blood lust..
And that's the last time the cat sorceress got seen?

Nah! What if they all went on a rampage and pillaged the countryside?
Bah, it wouldn't suit the challenge..

Any case good luck, nice style, sorry, couldn't help it either ;)

04 April 2005, 10:45 PM (

working on the background.. ill add a blanket for her to sit on.. there will be a tree on the right side (the old one again i think..) and ill put more cat-carvings in the wall.. more jewellery on her.. and maybe more kittens again..
and some roots in the foreground..

after changing the theme for a thousand times i think ill stick to the very first one.. with the addition that she is a special cat-priestess

please dont ask me what kind of stuff the cat is telling its mistress.. because i have no idea! :-)

04 April 2005, 10:55 PM
sacha: thanks for visiting again! :) ill be sooo glad if this picture is ready and closed!
but i think/hope i can finish it now..

Spin99: hahaha! :) vampire kitties, eh? that would solve my problem with the story and i had to paint only the background :D we will see.. thanks for looking! and good luck to you too!

04 April 2005, 10:57 PM
after changing the theme for a thousand times i think ill stick to the very first one.

does that mean you'll be going back to the concept of her carving stones into cats and they're coming to life? I hope so... I really liked the magicalness about that more than some of the more recent ones, and I really felt that that was a great, powerful image. (I also like the idea of making one's own friends, so to speak! :-) )

Anyhow, good luck with it!

04 April 2005, 11:09 PM
hi mike! thanks for your comment! i realised that i work better when i dont think too much.. but "i feel" there will be more kittens.. :)

04 April 2005, 11:22 PM
Ok, every time I check this out it's changed again. I think the kittens could actually be the master(s), they keep directing the pic and turning up in different spots.

She's the servant I suppose, (maybe she represents the artist here, at the beckon call of the creative force behind the art)...hmmm, an interesting turn about. Or the piece is the master, and the artist the servant...I wonder what the master will have imagined for herself in the end? :hmm:

04 April 2005, 11:27 PM
huhu Benita :)

I love the first one best as well .... altough it was really fun to see this image transform and change over time :D

Mach das, was dir am besten gefllt, das ist das wichtigste :D :D

04 April 2005, 11:27 PM
I also vote more kittens.
MORE kittens MORE kittens.. :D

04 April 2005, 11:33 PM
hi cameron, yes - that kind of describes it.. :)

i call it the vortex-technique.. spinn around the subject till you got a bad headache then start the autopilot and surprise yourself with the result/destination.. :D

wake me up if you see a blizzard or something :)
