Kenneth Turner has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: finished with 4 hours 12 minutes left (

Sometimes the master must remind his servant, the Homunculus, that a creator can also be a destroyer.

So here we go then.

This is my first competition and Iím kind off daunted by the standards here. But itís a good change to push my skills, with some helpful advice.

Iím mad busy at the moment so I wonít be able to submit any concept sketches till the weekend.

My initial thoughts are that Ďmaster and servantí suggest a relationship base upon power. The master should dominate the servant either physically, mentally, or through their status.

The first images in my head are of vast hellscape ruled by a colossal demon, with hundreds of little imps cavorting and posturing at his feet. But I guess the key finishing in the short time allowed will be to keep it simple and to the point.

So Iím going to do a close up shot, with the two characters facing off eye to eye. I really enjoy modelling heads, and I hope to put a lot into their expressions. I want them to tell the tale for me.

Good luck all

I'll upload some sketches when i get to a scanner. But otherwise here are the beginings of my servant mesh.

:bounce: Thank you Ken T:buttrock:

Through magic a wizard can create a Homunculus to do his bidding. In time the creature may develope a will of it's own and turn upon its creator.

Possible designs for the servant creature

03 March 2005, 05:44 PM (

Stitched together by magic from the flesh and bones of other creatures. The Homunculus requires the blood of its master to complete the spell.

Hi Ken. Love the new sketch of the Homunculus! Great concept too and I look forward to seeing your WIP. Good luck! :bounce: Claireabella

those servant creatures are looking really awesome! nice style of shapes there!

maybe you could transfer some of their visual apearance to their master- that would really balance out the picture!

04 April 2005, 02:13 PM
I agree the master design probally needs to change (I think he needs to meaner) I've got something new in mind I just haven't had a chance to upload a sketch.

Deadlines deadlines ..........mutter ..job ....mutter....

04 April 2005, 02:23 PM
Nice servant, but I think the master must be younger, and have hair (looks like Einstein).

Good luck!

I've cleared my work deadlines and girlfriends away for 2 weeks (sigh). So now its modelling time.

Modeled with MAX7, This is the mesh as it stands before I add the wings.

I'll use Z brush to create a deformation map. Thus I'm trying to keep the basic mesh as simple as possible, to make it easier to rig and pose.

04 April 2005, 09:58 AM
The servant model will be end after the wing, but you have to work with textures, too.:buttrock:

04 April 2005, 11:44 AM
Great start, very fine sketches you have there, sir.

04 April 2005, 06:05 PM (

I changed the design of the master to be more the opposite of the servant.

The master is old, mean and calculating whilst the servant is kinda cute and budda like.

04 April 2005, 10:08 PM (

This is the start of the masters head in Z-brush. It still needs a lot of work.

04 April 2005, 10:17 PM
Cool concept , and Modeling .

My master and Servant (

04 April 2005, 12:15 AM (

I'm about half way through the z-brush modelling stage now. Thanks for all your support.

04 April 2005, 12:51 AM
Hi ken......Having fun with Zbrush I see......I am also creating for the first time with brush....combining it with max and maya......It sure is intuitive,,,even in this infant stage I am in with it......great extra tool to go with the other apps.......I like your start on this,I'll watch for more as you go further.....Best to you......:arteest:

04 April 2005, 01:25 AM
Thanks Virtuoso.

Z-brush is fantastic. I don't know how i do this kind of work without it. (plus it IS great fun...). Good luck

04 April 2005, 06:55 AM
an interesting idea waiting......

04 April 2005, 06:55 AM
Simply outstanding man.

04 April 2005, 11:42 AM
yeah! thats what I'm talking about[see my previous post]! now master really looks like one who could mingle with those creatures! nice going!

04 April 2005, 04:38 PM
Crap om me! You got great stuff here, mate. Love your drawings and modelling (very accurate). I'll keep an eye on this thread.

04 April 2005, 08:37 PM (

Thanks all for your support. Your encouragement has kept me going. The clocks a ticking, and I must admit with all my other work commitments I'm beginning to feel a little tired.

I've probably put more detail into the hand than i need, but I'm still haven't settled on my final composition... I have two different ideas, and I would like to see how the mesh progresses before I choose one.

I think Iíll z-brush the servant next. I've been looking forward to it :)

04 April 2005, 01:38 AM
Wow, great looking hand, much better then the one I just finished, great work.

04 April 2005, 01:44 AM
very good modeling man..

04 April 2005, 01:45 AM
Nice work on the hand man :) Only thing is the knuckles & those dents near the wrist seems bit too much to me. good job

04 April 2005, 09:27 AM
Thanks arlutik and gra7

RealCapri..I see what you mean...I've still got a bit of work to do detailing the back of hands (needs veins) and the palms. I hope that will give them a more balanced look.

04 April 2005, 01:00 PM
:bounce: Hi! Ken T
 Very great detail in model.
:applause: Good luck .:bounce:

04 April 2005, 01:07 PM
I'd like to shake your hand for producing such a cool model. Fantastic.

04 April 2005, 01:45 PM
nice detailing mate... keep up the good work !

04 April 2005, 02:14 PM
all model seems nice with good details!:) especially hand and starting!
good luck`mate.

04 April 2005, 02:15 PM
wow! nice hand Kenneth!!

Keep it up mate!

04 April 2005, 05:30 PM
Nice work! I particularly like the detailing on the hand. Very nice!

04 April 2005, 09:09 PM
Great looking drawnings and modeling, my one crit would be to make the figures on the hand longer, I think it would help make the hands look more powerful.

04 April 2005, 05:51 PM
Hey there I have some advice for your hands. Make the fingers longer and those rimples on the nukles of the fingers are to long in the horizontal length. Greets Crapple

04 April 2005, 01:10 AM (

Mesh complete
Z-brush next.

04 April 2005, 01:16 AM
Thanks all for your feedback. I come back to finnish of the hands soon. Lengthen the fingers a bit. Look at the knuckles and add some veins, and maybe longer fingernails.

Looking at it now i'm not so sure about the antena on the servant ....I might remove them...

04 April 2005, 03:52 PM
Nice character, Ken. Really like the style and proportions. What was this model done in since you're now taking it to ZBrush? I agree that the antenae may be a little much. Maybe just shorten them instead of removing them...or try moving them forward on the head a little. They look like they merge with the top of the wings which makes it a little confusing (to me at least :) ). Keep up the great progress.

04 April 2005, 04:48 PM
the Servant is modeled by hand In MAX using Meshsmooth. I'm going to use z-brush for the fine features. (creases etc).

I will try moving the antena around a bit ... may be something shorter will do the trick

I like the little frog with wings and antennas! He come from dreams directly. Good way for you!

04 April 2005, 04:34 PM
Nice character Ken!!! I really like the whole character, specially the hands and feet!
Keep it up mate!!

04 April 2005, 05:23 PM
Nice character designs and concept sketches. . .I think your work is very interesting and has a good sense of humour. I like your modeling as well, your green creature has a good shape to him and lots of personality. Can't wait to see the z-brush detail. Keep up the good work. Alexi.

04 April 2005, 08:43 PM
HI ken T, love this character so far man..He could maybe benefit from some more 'lip' around his mouth..Keep it coming:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 02:09 PM
Funny character.:scream:

04 April 2005, 01:40 AM (

First Colour test and a crude bump map test. No real detail as yet, just trying to get the shade right.

04 April 2005, 02:36 AM
Wow very nice creature , great work, love the wings

04 April 2005, 02:46 AM
ē That creature looks very cool and funny, gotta work on that shader a bit more, but u r going in the right direction, waiting to see more! :bounce:

04 April 2005, 01:16 PM
Cool character and well done. nice job! I can't wait to see some more!!

04 April 2005, 10:19 AM

goodluck man!

05 May 2005, 06:00 PM
This thing is really interesting!!

05 May 2005, 12:25 AM (

I haven't been able to work on the challenge for a while. So I thought i'd grab all the bits and set up a shot, to see what needs doing.

I'm kind of happy with this idea, something I can realistically finish in the time left.

The window is just place holder at the moment and obviously the wizard needs a body...

Thanks all for your support

05 May 2005, 11:14 PM (

The window is the backdrop to the scene.
It needs uvs and a texture map for the wall.

The scene will be lit eventually by a harsh backlight of the moon through the window, and a soft firelight to fill the shadows

05 May 2005, 05:31 PM
Nice modeling work  Keep goin man, looking forward to the finished look. Good luck!

05 May 2005, 11:20 PM (

Just a quick update.
Max is begining to barf as it runs out of memory sigh....There's a lot of polys in the head and hands.

05 May 2005, 06:58 PM
I haven't checked in for a bit. Looking good my friend!

Nice details on the hands! Keep at it!

05 May 2005, 11:22 PM (

Finally I've rigged the characters.
hopefully the texturing process won't take too long

05 May 2005, 04:31 PM (

Hope I've got enough time to finish the rest

05 May 2005, 09:18 PM
Wow amazing texturing you did on your hand the nails are so realistic.

05 May 2005, 12:48 AM (

testing different compositions

05 May 2005, 01:11 AM
Hey Ken,
Very nicely done, I like this viewpoint . The guys face and hands are excellent:thumbsup: . I think the creature could have more variation in its texture but I am nitpicking here. Great job all round.

05 May 2005, 12:12 PM
Chris and Gerard. Thanks for your support, it helps keep me going.

Mike, I agree I'm going to look at the creature texture today:)

There's a lot more to do: A DOF effect, more realistic lighting, a bump map for the fingerprints, Improvements to the creature texture, a glass layer for the eyes....

Arrgg No time...

05 May 2005, 10:04 PM
Hi ken T

much luck  and good work, come a little but of work and already it has
it finished.
that already lack little :)

Time left: 0 days, 18 hours, 43 minutes, 37 seconds.

Guess I won't be sleeping tonight

05 May 2005, 05:12 AM (

Been up all night and the suns coming out.

I got a huge shake script with seperate elements for almost everything. I\\\'m kind of lighting and doing post fx as i go along ... seeing what\\\'s needed and adding a new elements/lights to order

05 May 2005, 06:56 AM (

I think this is it.

I've been working with low res proxies stop my machine slowing to a crawl. So now I just need to modify the shake script to spit out the full res image.

05 May 2005, 07:38 AM (

Because I render each light out seperately
and bring the images into shake as i go. For me the rendering / lighting /post fx milestones are identical.
