Fabian Hernandez has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: (this time for real): animals: our servants? (

I've made some minor adjustments...

03 March 2005, 10:06 AM
hey hey dude , welcome and let's have some fun now :D

03 March 2005, 12:19 PM
hi Fabian!
are you doing both 2D and 3D? that's being brave, hehe, good luck!

03 March 2005, 06:01 PM (

probably more like "master and slave"... and I don't like it too much but since I made it, I thought I could as well post it...

Thanks for the warm welcome! Yep, 2d and 3d. That increases the chance that one of them is gonna be finished! :D
Good luck to everyone!

03 March 2005, 09:00 AM
well good luck for you both entry... lol this one is really a cray first skecth !

03 March 2005, 12:51 PM (

Here a lab-monkey escapes from it's prison and puts that experimental brain-remote-control-thingy on the scientists head and plays wild with the controller :-D
What'ya think?

Julien: Thanks!

03 March 2005, 01:46 PM
It is original Fabian, and funny how you turn the relationship out.

I think you shouldnt put a big poster saying "animal testing" because its too much information. May be you can suggest it other way... putting jails with more monkeys, or a piece of paper that is trown away and just say it is an animal testing lab...

03 March 2005, 02:49 PM
Nah, 'course not, that's just for the sketching 'cause I hate to spend lots of time with just sketches...
But right now I'm trying to think of something different anyway... we will see... thanks for dropping by!

03 March 2005, 11:58 PM
The idea is great, monkey control a human?! Quite good, ya know... but isn't this a 3d entry. Why is it a 2d image, and not a 3d? Or this your initial sketch(concept)?Btw, the second one is usual though(not an great idea compared to the first one)

03 March 2005, 08:14 AM
Hi fabian... the concept of the animal test laboratory with inverted 'roles' I think can be really an interesting idea with deep/strong emotions... is a quick sketch but the idea is really great !

03 March 2005, 11:40 AM
Andi: Thanks for the input! For the 3d challenge every participant has to submit the following milestones: Concept Sketch, Modelling, Texturing, Lighting, Rendering, Post Effects and Compositing, Final Image.

Anyway it's a good idea to visualise your idea in a quick sketch before modeling, and in the industry concept sketches are very important. Imagine you just model a Character, present it to your boss and he won't like it at all...

Julien: Thanks mate. You've convinced me to go on with this one!

03 March 2005, 11:41 AM (

I've started modelling the head of the chimp. That's a box with a virtual mirror. AM I GOOD!! :-)

03 March 2005, 12:40 PM (

I've started modelling mouth and nose.

03 March 2005, 01:26 PM (

I'm now almost finished modelling the face I guess...

03 March 2005, 01:39 PM
sorry for my input but i liked the "smile only" somehow, the noseholes seen as eyes makes it a cool head itself. uhm, anyone sees that too?

for a chimp, i think his allover propotion is a bit too long in his face, try to make him a bit more "compact"? keep it up mate

03 March 2005, 01:39 PM
LOL.... dont you just wish that happened in real life

03 March 2005, 04:54 PM
funny scene man, looking forward for 3d-interpretation...

03 March 2005, 05:49 PM (

Sasha: You're right. Better now? What should I change?

eddieellis: harr harr!

Grimreaper1981: I'm on it, I'm on it! :-)
Good to see someone at my age here :-)

03 March 2005, 11:01 AM
Hello coCoKNIght,

Great idea you've got. I think that you should work some more on your chimp, in order to improve the main shape. But it's already a good start.

Good luck,

03 March 2005, 01:57 PM
:applause: really a good start !!! congrats and keep it hard !

03 March 2005, 05:06 PM (

Thanks for the input guys

I've worked some more on the head and modeled the general body shape.
Hands and feet still 'missing' and the whole model needs a lot of refinement still. I've tryed to make the head more compact but I think it still needs more of that...
An other thing I realised is that without noticing I have 'posed' the arms and the tail... I guess that's bad for rigging afterwards (I've never successfully rigged a character...)
Maybe someone knows a very easy and quick way to rig that chimp?

03 March 2005, 05:09 PM
I like your concept. The monkey is looking good, keep up the good work!

03 March 2005, 11:34 PM
c'mon! Im out for a couple of days and you guys are almost done with modelling one of the characters... do you sleep? :P

hehhe, good character! Im wondering about the texture

03 March 2005, 01:20 AM
Hi Fabian!
Much better. rigging is not impossible with posed arms. as long as verts don't get too close another bodyparts's verts, but thats just shitty maxrigging. xsi rules in rigging, maya is very cool too, don't know Lightwave. dunno wich application you use. but shouldnt be an unsolvable thing if you modeled him posed.
now for the modeling: neck, could be a bit thinner. if you cant tweak it, just add an extra loop there. so shoulders and head separate a bit clearer. the head is propably just a slight bit too big in scale compared to the rest of his body.
Hands could be twice as large, an chimp has quiet big hands with long fingers.
I like his belly. hehe, i generally like toons with bellys.
Legs, i'd give his knees a bit of bending, for an ape has em like that in a neutral pose :)
Feet, also could be larger. lets say 2x too. and looking more forward not sidewards.
the hehe, looks cool so far, just keep it up!

CHeers:thumbsup: :buttrock: :wip:

03 March 2005, 01:35 AM
That monkey looks really mischivous. Are you gonna add some fur or more realistic features or keep it stylized? I think if you could find a middle ground it would look awesome.

03 March 2005, 12:54 PM
Nice start good luck

03 March 2005, 05:22 PM
Really good concept - this you could make both funny and frightening at the same time. Modeling coming on good too, good luck!

03 March 2005, 01:13 PM (

I HATE HANDS! (not in RL) ok, that's it for now, I'm gonna make a rough model of the scientist now before coming back to the chimp and making refinements.
Also on this pic is the only ref I've been using.

@HammaJamma: Thank you! I'm glad you like it.

@bealbo: :-) hehe, so I guess now it's your turn. Actually I'm doing way too little considering that I've got some days free because of easter...

@the1st_angel: I'm using wings for modelling and will use max for final composition but I guess I could pose the characters in any app?
I've tweaked the neck only a little little bit, because I don't know if I want to separate the neck from the shoulders too much. see ref pic... But I'll try it out later on. Thanks for pointing that out!
As for the proportions: you might be right again. If I want such a big head I'd probably also have to make the hands and feet big, but I'll really worry about that later when I have a rough of the scientist 'cause they need to also fit to each other.

@Lebroba: Thanks! No, I'm not gonna add fur, don't want to think about how much rendertime that would need :-) anyway I thought I'd keep it simple, also no bump maps, just color maps.

@blackdragoncg: Thank you!

@Gunilla: funny and frightening at the same time... hmmm... I hadn't thought about that, could be cool... :-)

@all: wow, I'm surprised of the ammount of replys I'm getting here. Thanks for motivating me so much, that really helps me a lot to continue my work here :-)

03 March 2005, 01:27 PM
nice progress, and, yes, the posing can be done in alomst every 3d application, doesnt matter which one. for the fur: if you keep him stylized, fur is not urgently required at all.

for now just a small sugestion: fingers could be longer

looks great fabian. keep it up!

03 March 2005, 07:34 PM
funny concept indeed:)
In your drawing scientist seems to be smahed on the glass - is it so?
Cause it looks real great - if he is hit to the glass wall of laboratory... Poor suffering:)
It can be interestintg expression of his face!

Actually that idea for 2d - naked woman and soldiers - I really like it. Even more than the monkey! As I see you didn't use it... I wish I could see that one finished!

03 March 2005, 08:00 PM
ups, I've posted two instead of one...

Jack Youngblood
03 March 2005, 11:31 PM
like yr chimp. He look good. What's that music video with the scientists and the chimps?

03 March 2005, 11:35 PM
Cool, it has that caroonish look, kinda mojo jojo:D

03 March 2005, 11:15 AM
@Sacha: I guess I'll just try out character studio... Yeah you're right about the fingers, they're messy anyway...:D Thanks again for your very apreciated advice!

@Deryk: :) Thanks mate! Yeah, in the drawing he's been pressed to the window but I'm already thinking about a more funny composition, I'll post a sketch somewhen :)
'bout the 2d pic: I'll see that I can make it after the challenge is over ;)

@Jak Youngblood: Thanks but: What's that music video with the scientists and the chimps? What do you mean by that? What music video? Did I miss something?! :)

@nebezial: :D :thumbsup:

At the moment I'm very inspired to go on with the 2d challenge so it's possible that my next update here in the 3d challenge's gonna take some time... have pardon!:)

03 March 2005, 01:05 AM
Hey thanx for checking out my 3d challenge. I love the chimp ....Hopefully you keep up on the 3D end, I think it would take off.

03 March 2005, 10:31 PM
Ok, coCoKNIght
waiting for your fresh update, mate!
Curious about your new composition:rolleyes: !!

03 March 2005, 05:24 PM
hi coco =)
i love your concept ! but i dont like your ape's face that much
look at the black and white image you have postet as well
se the white, out sticking areas of the head? i think you should work on letting those areas stickung out of "your" head as well
but maybe i am wrong, just a suggestion
anyway good luck! and happy modeling :)

03 March 2005, 06:23 AM
Firstly just wanted to say HI! Nextly I wanted to say that I wont crit yet, gonna come back tomorrow or the next day to give you some good crits and comments

03 March 2005, 06:58 AM
hiya, good luck on the modelling. Hands are difficult, no arguments there.

looking at your reference - I think his legs should be a bit longer.

03 March 2005, 09:07 PM
wings3d- cool - i love this software too!

cool idea-thrilling a bit ;)

now to the model- at the beginning i thought u're trying to make a baboon. maybe use some other species then chimpanzee for refrerences, especialy if your "imagitionary"(errr... let say spontanously drawed...) monkey is closer to them then to the chimpanzee.(after all you made it a tail!)
i think you should bend the corpse to the front , to get natural pose for rigging.(it is not necessarily but it maybe helpful later i guess)

Yor ideas are great. Really love the chimp model.
Looking forwrd to further results!

04 April 2005, 02:51 PM
I think the video is "where's your head at". Don't remember the name of the band though.
They makakes I think, they were turning people intomonkeys and such. Liked it.

Fun idea btw! :D

04 April 2005, 04:00 PM
i think you got a very nice form for you chimp model, although it needs a bit more detail but it's looking good. and i like you idea too.

04 April 2005, 12:13 PM
Ok just clear up the music video thing it's "where's your head at" By Basement-Jaxx (

Making good progress with the chimp dude  Maybe refine some of the details and proportions if you are attempting a realistic type of model.... or forget I said anything if you are not :) Good luck with the fur....Will check back for some updates soon....L8r dude

04 April 2005, 02:23 PM
Hey coCoKNIght!
Where are you??!! How's monkey. Scientist? Wanna see it, man!

04 April 2005, 11:29 AM (

Not much to see, but I wanted to post SOMETHING... As I already mentioned in the 2d m&s thread, I had a lot of other, higher priority stuff to do lately, and there were also other circumstances that kept me from continuing with the challenge.
I'll give thoughts to everything that has been said. Thanks guys!

04 April 2005, 11:36 AM
wings3d- cool - i love this software too!

Hehe, I was hoping nobody would notice... Well, I certainly don't wanna make a baboon... didn't even know what that is when I first read your post. After looking at some images on google I now know that I want to make it a chimp... with a tail :D
I'm not aiming for realism, the chimp should just express: I'm one of those poor animals they make experiments with... and now I strike back! harr harr! :)

04 April 2005, 12:02 PM (

What's this?! Could it possibly be the new goger detector? Or is it a pain inflicting device? Does it maybe even have the ability to control scientists? Or is it just the TV-command? :-)

04 April 2005, 05:56 PM
*cues in the Twilight Zone theme*

04 April 2005, 10:22 PM
welcome back!
and now... get back to work!
just joking!

04 April 2005, 04:07 PM
wow..realy cool.

enjoy your work.
good luck.

05 May 2005, 06:18 PM
coCoKNIght no up-dates ? :wip: no news ?

05 May 2005, 08:58 PM (

ok, ok, here you are. The surrounding wip1. Just fo you!

05 May 2005, 09:07 PM
Hi people.... I must admit that I've lost interest in the m&s projects.... I'm doing lots of other stuff though. A game art challenge has started recently and I'm following the entries there and reading a lot about the game art. There's still a lot I haven't figured out yet... So much to learn... well, and I've got at least three other 3d projects going...

I'm definatly going to finish this and the 2d m&s but I don't think that'll be before the deadline. Though if you keep pushing me commanding me to work... I'll have to obey won't I? :D

05 May 2005, 10:25 PM
exactly Fabian! and now, get back to work!

I like your idea so, anyway I want you to finish it, if youre involved in many other projects is normal to loose a bit of interest but its good to finish the things you start (I might be saying this for myself... have got a 3d short to do too).

tell us more about the game art challenge, sounds good.

05 May 2005, 06:12 AM

see for yourself: game art challenge (

Also I'm trying to bring up v4 of my website though... I don't have much to show, so perhaps I really should finish this first ;)

I've also got to make some designs, 2d animations and subtitles for a short film I'm doing with some friends.

And these are only my personal projects... There's some contract work I've got to do too... but enough of these boring excuses!

05 May 2005, 06:12 AM (

I continued modelling on the scientist. I don't like his eyes. The eyes always make me trouble anyway... Also the lips could be a lot better but that's not a problem to fix.

05 May 2005, 07:39 AM (

And another small scientist update...

05 May 2005, 03:55 PM
Nice progress with the scientist - and will there be more updates? Hurry, not much time left :wip:

05 May 2005, 03:11 PM
hey mate.. any updates

05 May 2005, 11:06 AM (

ok, ok, here is a lighting-,basic material-, render-test.
I need a better machine... buhu...

05 May 2005, 12:21 PM (

ok, ok, here is a lighting-,basic material-, render-test.
I need a better machine... buhu...

05 May 2005, 12:28 PM (

hello there

sorry for the double post :-/

I'm done modeling the scientist. There's not enough time to make it better...

and I've made quick render with him in the room. This is probably also his final pose since I'm running out of time it since it actually doesn't look too bad.
I still gotta do the helmet thing and add more environment stuff like a table etc.
Also my plan is to have more of this chimps around in the corner of the room...
Well I'm off back to work!

05 May 2005, 01:57 PM (

and this is the same render as above with some colors.

05 May 2005, 02:07 PM
Looking really awesome coCoKnIght,

I love the coloring - it gives that computer-chip/cleanroom ambience.

Keep it up man.

05 May 2005, 04:56 PM (

added a bump map to the face, and made some small changes like the pose of the arm...

I wanted to use sss but the test render took forever to render, so there'll be no sss :-(

05 May 2005, 04:58 PM
mutedOracle: Hi and thanks for stopping by! I'm glad you like it! :)

05 May 2005, 05:25 AM
Great progress my friend! just checked both your entries, to see what you're up to. you really put in heaps of work! (only made a bit progress in my 2d) Just keep it up and best luck on your final entry! see you soon and keep on rocking:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 12:58 PM
Im glad youre finishing it!
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

05 May 2005, 07:55 AM (

It's become almost impossible to change anything at the geometry in 3dsMAX and it really pissed me off, 'cause it was soooooo slooooow, so I decided to learn some more about yafray and about texturing in wings. Mihnae's tutorials (and he himself) helped me a lot on setting up the lights.
Yesterday I haven't been able to upload anything 'cause I couldn't reach the challenge site... Seems that everyone wants to upload his/her images...
Well, this image shows a bit my progress with the lighting of the scen in wings3d using yafray.

05 May 2005, 07:58 AM
Sasha: What happened? Are you not gonna finish?
Bea: I'm trying, I'm trying :)

05 May 2005, 08:09 AM (

Still much to do... On this pic there're also finally shadows... I'm not too happy with 'em though...

05 May 2005, 11:33 AM
:bounce: gogogogogo... hurry up mate ! Happy to see that you continue !

05 May 2005, 11:38 AM (

what's there to say... I'm pretty much done with modeling. Now it's time to refine the textures...

05 May 2005, 09:36 PM (

these are the three renders I did in full res (4000*1200).
After the first one I noticed that the human character and the two chimps in the foreground were too lowpoly for this resolution, so I set up an extra smoothstep for them.
The 3rd render was done with only the arealight so I could darken the right of the image a little.

05 May 2005, 07:15 AM (

Photoshop additions: lightning, blur (chimp in the background), keyholes, human character: eyes, teeth. And minor soft paintovers here and there.

05 May 2005, 07:51 AM (

Voil, this is the final image, I've learned a lot while doing it, and that was also my goal :-) feel free to comment and critique the image.
It's also the first challengeentry I've been able to finish. Because I'm still an aprentice (till august) I often don't have much time left to do cg...
Also, it's the first scene I've fully done in wings3d and it works great!
Well, that's it, enjoy!

05 May 2005, 10:39 AM
hey coCoKNight glad you stoped by! thnx

Congrats on finishing your entry! Looking cool and I would have fit perfectly into this
imga ;) as the big boss of the chimps. What cha think? hehe

Good luck and see you around in the forums!

05 May 2005, 01:59 PM
Hey, glad to see you finished after all!

Congrats! :applause: :applause: :applause:

05 May 2005, 02:18 PM
I would have fit perfectly into this
imga ;) as the big boss of the chimps. What cha think?

Yeah, perhaps if you made yourself really compact you could fit into one of these jails :D
Thanks goro

and thanks sonia! :)

05 May 2005, 04:29 PM
Heh, you can't go wrong with monkeys. Congrats

05 May 2005, 08:46 PM (

I've made some minor adjustments...

05 May 2005, 01:14 PM
Im glad you finished it!
good work! and good luck!
