Hi Folks,

Nice to meet you all again to this cool new challenge.

I never did cg-characters bevore, so i think it´s a good training. ;) Let´s how far i get on this one.

This is the first Idea that came up reading the instructions. The Final Image will be very MANGA like. So lets get this Party started :) :) :)

well, great use of grey colors...I reallty can´t say anything else, have no idea what you´re trying to do here.....:)
Even though I wont join the 3D section this time, if any section at all(?...lack of time), I will follow your progress. Just to make sure, that whatever concept I develope, I won´t find out that you´ve already done it better...;)

This is one of my Characters in the Scene, it´s called LOAR. A great cyborg (half human half mashine) with strong emotions, the result of genetic engeniering in the future.

Here is a rip from the story i´m working on...

... It is civil War on Minakata.

The Fortress of King Tomonaga is taken and a heavy Battle going on in the royal throne room.

The King is woundet and only his few Servants can vindicate him from the assailants.

Loar, Tomec, & Kira are in place to protect her Master until the last breath.

Ok that´s 4 today, stay tuned!

Are you related to Dr Phlox from "Enterprise" tv series. You have the same smile as he does. Anyways , I like your sketches , very nice style:thumbsup:. I like the heroic virtues of the servants in your story. Has to be a good master to have heroic servants. Look forward to more.

Hi folks,

Here is the first version from the environment in my picture.

It´s an asian-style temple which will become a futuristic touch in the end.

A great battle will take place in this one, where the attackers want to take over the throne and the only hope of king Tomonaga are his loyal servants.

Ok ok, i knew that is not a very impressing update, I hope you like it nevertheless ;)

Sorry, I was not very busy today on challengework. These are the Fingers from Loar, they are not finished yet. I have a little trouble to figure out to make them spread later... hmmm i was not very good in mechanics, so pleasy vorgive me that simple version.

Well, if i understood Your problem right, then You can make some more of the movable stuff (where the joint of the finger and the wrist is) on the wrist to make the fingers split.

I was a not satisfied with the body of KIRA, my main character and so i thought i can give her a whole new body... 4 free :)

Hi Michael, of course they will be become a used look, but more like painted... hmm do you know the "ghost of the shell" movies?! Something in that style... very manga like.

Hi! Possible.... this throne room will be heavy damaged, so that there is possible no escape chance 4 the master and his servants. There will be a great whole in the ceiling and one of the columns will be broken and placed over the ground of the room... ore something in that way :)

Gnnnkrrrg... hmpf... bäh!! I cant´t her the clothes on in the way that i want. I think the best way is let she let run naked through my picture ;)

Nevermind. that´s my update 4 today. I fixed some problems on proportions and some corners on her breasts (thanks 4 the hint Norman, i hope it looks a bit rounder now)

Jep! Dayjob is over now back to the Challenge :)

This evening i will went to the Armor of Kira. The version i posted yesterday was not so great, so i modeled it over. I think this is a better start. (took some references from "Yukito Kishiro" :)

Great looking model so far! Only thing, it seems to me her back is to thin in the area just under the armpits. Instead of going ( ) for the back it should be a bit more \ / shaped - other than that I can't see any flaws. I love the shoes - would get me a pai tomorrow if they where for sale :thumbsup:

Hi Jonas, DON´T PANIC ;) there will be a belly button :). The bumpy lines on here legs are some kind of folds (Thanks Claus) but not very well modeled, I will try to make here some :: HOT-LATEX-PANTS :twisted::twisted:.!

I haven't looked at this challange and your entry in particular much yet. But now that I did, all I can say is... carp@#!%$! is there something in CG you can't do? Only this time there is now some more competition... the last "Space Opera Challange" was a sure homerun for you ;)

Knowing your girlfriend and her sister even better I know that you have good reference running around and this is obviously reflected in your sketch-drawings and WIPs sofar ;-)

Regarding your recently posted WIP-images and ideas to stick with a Manga-style of look, I am eagerly looking forward to your further postings. This latex-stuff is sooooo sweeeeet! Your "Master and Servant"-thread is in my bookmarks now and I will surely check it out on a daily basis.

Kira's looking pretty good, vampeta :) . The butt looks a little low (but then again, I know nothing about butts :D ), but that could just be the angle.

BTW, have you ever seen Oswald Piras's Alita (from Battle Angel) model? It's very good (similar to the style you're going for) and also has the "latex-hotpants" idea. :drool:

In all seriousness, great modeling on the form and especially the little wrinkles in the latex. That's hard stuff to pull off that well.

I read manga too, and anime. It depends on the manga/anime artist I guess, but typically I don't see alot of thin waistlines and large buttocks.. mostly large breasts. Maybe try reducing the ass/hip size and leave the waist the size it is which could also work..

the last update looks alot better, looks more round.

Hey..it's coming along nicely man...just a personal taste tip though....select at each butt cheek a center vertex from behind and with big Area soft selection (u work in MAX ..yes?) ,
pull the butt cheeks up a bit...she looks a bit low butt lady now...again it's only my humble opinion....:)

This is my first experiment to create hair. This is very early stage, just to figure out how to get some good results without any hair software.

The haircut is a bit worst at the moment...also some geometric errors on her face (WIP) just wanted you to show the working progress.

Hi alex. Since i love your work, id like to give you a few tips on the face. since my english in anatomy sux royally, i gonna write it in german :P hahaha, lazy me

Im augenblick guckt sie etwas fassungslos. kommt vom augenplacement, humanoid, Orientierung fürs tweaking: Pupillenmitte in der horizontale, blick exakt gerade, ist in der vertikalen mitte des schädels. deine skizze zeigt eine 30° neigung, verkürzt folglich distanzen. vorsicht!
wenn du frontal modeliers, neutral, beträgt der referenzabstand deraugen eine augenbreite.

falls du von den augen ausgehst beim tweaken, kopfbreite anpassen, :) meine augen sagen mir, augen ca. eine 1/3 pupillengösse nach unten verschieben. selektier dabei die wangenvertikel von der profilansicht aus, und danach kanst du den wert gleich auf die augäpfel übertragen.

Näschen (ein sehr hübsches näschen auf der skizze :)) proportional zu massiv. die brücke zwischen den nasenlöchern liegt im normalfall tiefer als die flügel, nasenfügel eine 1/3 fügelhühe rauf im ansatz sollte die form optimieren, für die nasenlöcher gibs n simplen trick: häng "innen" einfach nen spline rein, damit hast du kontrolle über die masse im smove.
Vom oberen augendeckel läuft bei humanouiden eine leveldefinitionsline entlang der nase um's auge, die diagonal ausfaded über die wangen. zwischen dieser line und dem auge ist fast kein fett, heisst, mit ner kleine volumenkorrektur zwischen nasenrücken und wangen sollte die masse der nase dann zum näschen der skizze werden :)

das grübchen zwischen nase und mund ist zu tief. scheitelpunkte auf der lokalen z-achse ewas rausziehen um das zu glätten sollte helfen. (kanns sein dass du den symetry modifier benützt und dir die zentralline über den lippen ewas zur seite gdriftet ist un drum dor ein kleines loch ist?)

Lippen: deine skizze hat n süssen schmollmund. mit der korrektur am besagten grübchen sollte die oberlippe "repariert" sein, unterlippe könntest du ewas mehr volumen geben (z-lokal mittlere reihe ringselect modus die lines ewas heben...) schmollen ist sexy ;)

layer haar. ist fies. ich weiss. tipp: 1. layer, opak bis auf die haarspitzen. massiv. (im prinzip wie n helm mit nem schitt beim scheitel, u-einbuchtung), orientierunspunkt, haaransatz modeliertes haar. für einfacheres modelieren, mach kopien vom haarboden, extrudier haagruppen. hinterkophaar, seitenhaar, deckhaar scheitel links und rechts. haaransatz sollte am ende geschlossen sein. danach kannset einzelsträhnen gewinnen aus dee modelirten haarbasis. die bilden layers2 und 3 (versuch mit 2,5 durchzukommen ;)) nach belieben versetzt, strähnenlauf von layer 1 wiederholen, in einzelsträhnen, verschieden breit. und produzier überschitte bei den strähnen in der breite. tipp, stränen ringselect und connecten, entstandene mittelteilung ewtas anheben. das schafft die illusion von volumen :)
in max hab ich's jeweils so gemacht: haar als renderbaren spline (inklusive uvw) 3seitig vom scheitel gezeichnet und angepasst für randomisation steht rodationswinkel zur verfügung 30/60 oder 90° oder unwrap uvw und verschieben auf dem map) , in ein poly umgewandelt 2 seiten und die caps gekillt, ringselect, breite aufgebalsen. grundsätzlich: layerhaar ist hart, das so hinzukriegen dass es gut aussieht, animirbarkeit vom übelsten. für'n still... egal :)

OK. I´m not good in faces, that´s a fact! but thats why i´m here, just to learn it! right ?!

I was absolut unhappy with the face of Kira. It was modeled after a the sketch i draw and there where a lot of proportional errors on it. The modeling result was a Face that i don´t like. It´s very easy to design something abstract, but when it comes to model nature & reality... nevermind... I just wanted u to show you i´m doing.

It's hard to tell since there's hair on the better version, but the one thing I definitely noticed on the "bad version" was that the upper part of the head (forehead to the top) looked too squashed, and not tall enough.

Are you planning on making the character realistic now, or are you still planning on her being anime-style?
This (http://www.comet-cartoons.com/toons/3ddocs/facialmodeling/modeling.html) is the tutorial that I used when I first started some anime modelling a while back (it's kinda old, but the principles still work). For your Kira (if you still want her to be kinda "Alita"-like), I'd look for some of Yukito Kishiro's artwork and use that as part of your modeling reference.

As for the hair... well, I'd don't much about that subject, but you could make copies of the hair strands and layer them to create more volume to it (which I think is it's the main problem right now)

@jowens:: Jeah! the first version was modeled without references, The greates Problems where the Eyes at the beginning. The second version looks a bit better, but after a few texturing tests he looks TERRIBLE. I was soo unlucky to decide to make a third version. (i had the same Problems modeling my Okayama Cruiser, i have made three Versions of the front, and only the third Version looks good ;) ) Thanks 4 the feedback.

-- work opn her Lips more...seems too ...out (can't find correct word now)...and i think lower lips should be less out than upper lips...just a bit...also all mouth should be a little smaller or in the way that Sacha (1st_angel ) makes them.

-- ears i think are way back...must come forward and meet the Diagonal side line of Jaw..(i know 'cuase i made the same mistake in first ears for ARES)

-- In Manga style i think face is more round and chin is more small and pointy..i think...make a small search on this.....

I think u are in abetter track now but my humble advice is to work more with it ....don't just yet go to hair and other stuff.

I concur with Dimitris that the ears are currently set very far back. At the moment this gives the head a bit of an elfish appearance. But the hugh leaps in quality of your head-modeling skills cannot be denied! I'm very impressed.

I found some nice additional manga-reference images:

In those example images you can clearly see the small nose and chin manga-characters usually have as Dimitris just pointed out. Furthermore the jaw and overall lower part of the head has a very triangular shape in those reference images.

I bet it's a tough call this time around for you in this challange, but just stick to it... sofar your efforts in swimmnig in uncharted waters seem to gradually pay off!

Hair is looking a hundred times better than the previous version. :)

Only thing I really notice is that the nose is holding back the model from being "manga-style"; the nose looks too realistic for the character. Try thining it out, tapering the end of the nose to more of a point, and decreasing the size of the nostrils.

This is a quick & dirty lihting test with V-Ray, (low GI settings).
Aso a test 4 the Cam. position

Room is up 70% finished.

I´m a bit unhappy with the result. Most of the Materials lose ther specular settings and looking too dim. :(

I have to try out some different render settings or materials..

Regarding the head-modeling work, I guess I found something helpful here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=226583). It is not manga-related, therefore missing the direct references to manga-specific proportions, but still containing helpful guides for creating an appealing face.

hey there dude.,. fantastic progress so far .. i wouldnt be too harsh on yourself the textures look quiet good a few tweaks here and there with the lighting will do a lot more just keep experimenting.. keep hittin that render button until you get what you want.. im sure when you add more detail to the scene it will look alot better (as you said its only 70% done) so good luck and awaiting more progress its looking great man... :thumbsup:

Here is the first textured version of Kiras head. Looking much better then some versions i dit bevore, but i´m curious what you think of her ;)

(I removed the hair to show you some proportional fixes on her head)

Ok, critique time! :applause:

1. From the side, the lower lip looks kinda funny; usually, it's the upper lip which sticks out further than the lower lip.

2. The nose still needs to be less realistic and more anime-ish (see my post above for what I mean).

3. There either needs to be a bigger chin or smaller lips (can't really tell, but something in that area is throwing the lower face off).

Very very thanks 4 the continous visits and very helpfull hints & links in this thread!
Most of the errors in my face are the result from a maybe different point of view, maybe i´m better in painting faces then modeling them ;) (but as i said bevore, i improved my modeling skills a lot (the first version of the face took twice the time then the last one)

I´m so short in time in this Challenge, i only hope i can finish this projekt.

Hi Friends,

I dit some more texture work on her face, i dit also some proportional changes on some areas (thanks Jason ;) )

I made her nose a bit smaller now, but i decidet to leave the shape in this way (a bit more realistic then a normal comic-character)

I also shorted the distance between the nose and her upper lips and made her lips a bit smaller in front-view.

And.. i gave her a tribal to maker her look a bit more unique.

I dit a quick overpaint on my render in PS to figure out a good shape of her hair.

This is the result modeled with nurbs (3 hair layers)
There are currently some texture repeat errors on it, i will fix this tomorrow gähn... i need to sleep)

She's really coming to life Alex. Looks great with the hair in place. Try and get the eyes to have more interactions with the light...maybe a slight rebuild with some lenses? (raytracing & stuff)

Hi !

I'm a little late to post comments on the geometry but I think it needs a few tweakings. What I see more in the front view is that the nostrils should be rounded. The hole looks too squared. Same comment for the tip of the nose.

The hairs look a little like "Nylon" (don't have my dictionary at work sorry) but I'm not really a specialist...

Hey hey Alex!

Nice updates You have done here, love the hair, looks really fluffy :) though the end of the hair is still visible (where it should be completlie transparent). Oh and IMHO the hair, when You look from the front, looks kinda poised in the air, needs another layr of the hair to fill the gap in there (the right side near the neck from the back).
About the eyes, take a look at this (http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/59/1) tutorial.

I´m just experimenting with some different techniques of lighting.

The scene is rendered with Max default scanline renderer (no GI). I don´t like the shadow casting at he moment but this was just a test.

The next one will be rendered with Mental ray..

It'd be nice if you could simulate some dirt build up, either by adding a mix material with a vertex paint channel as the mixer or maybe by using a gradient with

- oryginal material
- dirtier material
- dirtiest varient

set it up as a uvw map on channel 2 and then add a channel 2 uvw map with simple flat mapping pointing straight up
(you can copy the oryginal and manipulate the bitmap to be darker under its color tweaks)

I was just curious how i the room will look withs some standart max lights. (the last test was with v-ray, but i don´t like the result...the materials are to dim with vray)
I will try to do in mentalray some tests...
...The first results look not so bad.:)

Hi Friends,

Ok i was playing with mentalray a bit ;)

I testet the lighting without textures to improve my rendering Time. This one took 3 hours in 1100x1100 pixel (on my old AMD Mashine ;)

I,m so far satisfied with this one... just a bt curious how it will look with textures :/

I think with textures the rendering time will be 4x the time (ähmm... i forgott the final resolution... dear lord :O ... well then i think 16-32x ;)

Impressive scene! Yes- yes volumetric lights are cool and hungry for RAM and machine. Also problematic to work with the highres maps and final image with this light effect. Perhaps you can give a try to solve it in photoshop...I know it's not the same...but you can give more control on it and no doubt some great artists made it perfectly in 2D. Just a suggestion you know. To avoid the out of memory message after you're waiting since two hours for start of your final rendering. :wavey:

Yea, i think i will move the cam a bit to the right, The Characters will be very big in size and in this position they will obscure the backround to much.
I will try that out as soon as the characters are finished (I hate modeling HANDS :( ) ;)

Great work on the ligthing. You've got a good camera angle established and the beams of light comming in work really well with the composition. I like the dark area on the left side, it's a good contrast to the bright areas. Alexi.

My dayjob is killing me and i have currently zero time to work on the image.
(the only thing finished is my backround)

I hope i can finish my characters until next week. (Kira is up to 70% (no rigging yet)) and loar is at 90% ... need textures and arms. (Vilain at 0% ;)

It takes shape slowly.

I placed my robot into the scene to figure out how will the lighting work (currently just one light straight behind from the ceiling, the rest does GI :)

My new Mashine rendered 6 hours without volume light in 1000x1000 pixel. (the volume light in this one are a small comositing fake... :)

Now i will went back to the missing parts from Kira, hope modeling will be finished this night!? ;)

Interssant work. Especially lighting and composition. Even if with this good lighting we lost emotion and feelings for characters.
